TENERIFE TO SPEND 600 MILLION EUROS ON MAJOR FACELIFT

Alberto Bernabé

T

Hoteliers lead the way with renovations

ENERIFE is banking on its future tourism success through the renewal of the destination with an investment of almost 600 million euros. As part of this campaign, hoteliers have already made a pledge to renew 25 per cent of the island’s beds during a meeting organised in the framework of the tourism fair Fitur. Tourism chiefs are well aware that 2016 brought outstanding success for Tenerife with a record year for arrivals and spending. Keeping it this way once other destinations bounce back from their security issues is now top of the agenda. This was announced by president of Tenerife Cabildo, Carlos Alonso during his speech at the meeting organised by Tourism Tenerife with the tourism industry in the framework of the International Tourism Fair held in Madrid. “We have recovered the pace but to advance we have to continue pedalling because otherwise we will fall off the bike,” he stressed. He revealed that the private

sector is to spend 500 million euros on the island for the renovation or the opening of new tourist establishments, “which means the renovation of 25 per cent of the tourist beds of Tenerife in the next two years”. Added to this will be expenditure of 100 million euros by the public sector to improve the tourist product, the conditioning of the coast or the regeneration of public spaces with the idea of”strengthening the island as a destination and to advance in quality and competitiveness “. The island’s tourism councillor, Alberto Bernabé, said: “Both the public and private sectors have been working together for many years with professionalism to improve the quality of the destination and, at the moment, we have the challenge of renewal, In which we are investing many resources. “

Sr. Bernabe said tourism is a vital sector for the economic development of the island “and the one that has flagged the illusion in the economic recovery”.

Carlos Alonso Other areas of Tenerife presented their own plans for the future at the fair, including Puerto de la Cruz which is aiming to attract more visitors from the mainland.

The resort is being hailed as a successful case of conversion of a mature destination, with the joint work undertaken by public administrations and the private

sector through the Rehabilitation Consortium. Granadilla de Abona has been promoting its beaches, natural spaces and water sports

MORE ANGER OVER SOUTH HOSPITAL DELAYS

C

AMPAIGNERS fighting for the final completion of Tenerife’s south hospital are demanding an urgent meeting with Canary Government officials. They want to discuss the current situation face to face with president Fernando Clavijo and the new Minister of Health, José Manuel Baltar. The Platform for Hospital del Sur wants to know what is happening over the adjudication of the surgical mode and is reminding Sr. Clavijo that he made completion of the hospital one of his priorities during his election campaign. The campaigners say they

have been further delays in the whole project which will mean the south of the island has

been waiting 20 years for the completed facility. The situation, they say, is now very serious and have critiised the “slow, tedious and lamentable process of bidding and adjudication, whose sole responsibility is the Govern-

ment of the Canary Islands.” A meeting is also to be called between the mayors of the south of Tenerife to present a common front.

NEW DATABASE

Santa Cruz employs experts to identify graffiti authors

A

graphology company has been called in to determine the authorship of graffiti in Santa Cruz.

The move is part of a major new campaign by the city council to crackdown on this nuisance in the capital. The areas of Public Services and Public Safety will work together, together with the company Orion, in an investigation that seeks to

determine the identity of all those who carry out graffiti and thus reduce the effect it has on the city and its heritage. Fourth deputy mayor and councillor of public services, Dámaso Arteaga, said: “The idea is that a specialised

company develops a database with which to advise the city in the matter of graffiti so that it can act against all those who contravene municipal ordinances. “ The council is asking members of the public to collaborate and report any incidents. The first deputy mayor and councillor of public safety, Zaida González,

believes that the most positive aspect of this coordination between different municipal areas “is that the company will provide us with expert evidence that will determine the authorship of the graffiti.” “Each graffiti leaves a mark and the mixture of police and expert work will be a great advance in the arrests and future sentences,” he said.

FREE LAND Lifeline grants for Chimiche’s car historic property parking problems RESTORING FACADES owners solved

L

OS Realejos is to help owners restore historic buildings through a new lifeline grant scheme.

The move is part of its overall grants scheme, with the historic heritage department allocating a 50,000 euro fund for aid. This is for private properties in historic settings. “We are finally meeting one of the biggest demands by owners of property of a patrimonial nature included in the municipal catalogue and within the historical areas of the town, who have been demanding economic support to carry out Improvements to the façades,” said local councillor Adolfo González. With this measure, the council is promoting the conservation of the architectural heritage of the municipality, one of the objectives set in the government programme and which, they announce, will continue in the coming years.

TOURISM PLAN

La Orotava bids to attract more visitors La Orotava is to create a new Strategic Municipal Tourist Plan

T

HIS was agreed when the Mayor, Francisco Linares and the councillor for tourism, Delia Escobar, held a meeting with the CEO of Tourism of Tenerife, Vicente Dorta, in order to discuss various topics of tourist interest to the municipality. Among other things, it was indicated that the insular institution is working on the implementation of a Tourism Plan which includes multiple guidelines to apply throughout the island and promote Tene-

rife, including the values offered by La Orotava. The local council agreed this work was essential but also suggested an internal plan was needed to give guidelines to businesses etc within La

Orotava. Sr. Linares said two universities would be helping with this, La Laguna and the European Canar y Islands, together with professional technicians in this field. He stressed that La Orotava has a number of unique values, which make it a must visit, with attractions from the coast to the peak of Teide. The municipality offers nature, hiking, landscapes and

protected areas, architectural and artistic heritage, ethnography, gastronomy, beaches, culture and more. “Therefore, it is essential to have a regulatory plan and establish the main guidelines to follow to achieve greater and better results, “he said. Help was also requested for the continued modernisation of the tourist information office which is visited by more than 40,000 people a year.

The event will be held from June 5th to June 10th “to value the artistic creation of the LGTBIQ community and give voice to the persecuted African collectives.” Arona says it wants to be known as a gay friendly municipality, like others in the Canary Islands. Details were presented during the FITUR tourism fair by the

Mayor, José Julián Mena. The festival will bring to Arona renowned personalities from the political, social and artistic world belonging to the collective LGTBIQ in a conference in which there will be various activities, such as workshops, talks and conferences.

SEX TRAFFICKING

Police free two women forced to beg on streets

P

OLICE in the Canary Islands have freed two girls, one of them under 16, who were forced to beg for coins on the streets for nearly 13 hours a day! One of the women was also used as a sex slave by a gang of Romanian nationals on the holiday island of Gran Canaria. Five men have been arrested in the capital of Las Palmas for sexual exploitation and coercing begging. “Their two victims had to meet a work schedule and deliver the daily collection to their controllers,” said a police spokesman. The investigation began after one of the woman managed to contact the police who were investigating human trafficking. She said she was being kept against her will after meeting and falling in love with a man in her home country of Romania. At that stage, she was still underage. “This Lover Boy procedure is a well-known method which involves a false relationship with the victim with the sole purpose of capturing her, separating her from the family and offering her a better life,” said the police. “The social networks are frequently used to capture the victims.” Once the woman had arrived in Spain, her so-called boyfriend seized all her paperwork and forced her into prostitution day and night. She had to hand over all her money and was threatened with violence. Despite having to work as a prostitute, the woman was also forced to beg on the streets of Las Palmas from 8am in the morning until 8.30pm at night and deposit all money given into collection boxes in the house in which she was kept. This was invariably a pittance. When police carried out raids, they found the begging boxes contained just 298 euros in coins. Police said the first girl was later joined by a second woman who was also captured in Romania.

The Mayor stressed the programme for the rehabilitation of La Candelaria homes, which can begin this year, and programmes related to hydraulic infrastructures and rainwater piping, “a matter that we are finally on the way to solve in the city and that would not have been possible without the participation of the Cabildo “. development of the neighborhoods of the Southwest in tune with the own demands raised by the neighbors in the open participatory process. investment of 400,000 euros is foreseen for the main collectors of Santa Cruz. For the improvement of the rainwater network in three districts of the central and southwestern area (Acorán) there is an expected investment of around 118,000 euros. Plaza de España and Las Mesas Park. The remodelling works of the Plaza de España involve an investment of around one million euros, while for the Las Mesas Park there is a provision of 217,000 euros and for the treatment works of the coast of Valleseco about 50,000 euros.

Roads. In the area of roads, more than 150,000 euros will be invested in the improvement of TF-272 (the rise to Sobradillo) and TF-256 (rise to Tablero), as well as in TF-180 and TF-29 in Mercatenerife and TF-1 with TF-2. In addition, there will be paving of different streets in the districts with an investment of 367,000 euros. Sports. Streamlining minor work permits in Guía de Isora “This measure responds to the increase in demand for works that we have been observing in recent times,” said urban planning councillor Jose Miguel Mesa. “Between 2015 and 2016, the number of licenses of minor work granted by the city in urban and rural land increased by 78 per cent . “

Crashlanding at La Caleta

RONA has given the green light to the special plan for the management of the port of Las Galletas.

The local council has initially approved the special management plan, blocked since 2009, which gives legal security to the development of this area and will allow new investments in this strategic infrastructure. The final approval will allow the realisation of new investments. To promote the development and improvement of the

whole of Las Galletas-Costa del Silencio-El Fraile is one of the priorities of the Mayor of Arona, José Julián Mena, and his team. They believe the area needs special attention, having been “forgotten” over a number of decades. With this step, the dossier, which shows the uses and activities allowed in this area, together with the Strategic Environmental Study, is now on

public show. The process of gathering the necessary information from different administrations has also started. Councillor for town planning, Luis García said the development of the port had been blocked since 2009, passing through two general plans without a solution to the problem. “Without a doubt, it will open the door to new investment opportunities because we are giving legal guarantees,” he added.

In the annual data, it can be observed that in the months of January, February and March, a percentage of occupancy of more than 92 per cent was obtained with 95 per cent peaks. The trend declined a little in April, May and June, months of low season, although it was around 80 per cent and from July to December, the percentage has not dropped from 85 per cent with peaks of 95 per cent and nearly 100 per cent on some occasions.

Fire in city tunnel

Pioneering “intelligent” information point installed in Los Gigantes

CANARY FIRST

S

ANTIAGO del Teide council has installed the first intelligent pedestrian information sign in the Canary Islands.

A

fire in a van in Santa Cruz led to major traffic disruption.

The blaze broke out as the vehicle was travelling through the tunnel of avenida Tres de Mayo during rush hour. The driver got out but the added complication was the fact that it happened in the fast lane. The tunnel had to be closed whilst the fire brigade dealt with the incident, extinguished the flame, removed the car and then tidied the after-math.

By downloading the application “Inventrip”, visitors can access all the tourist, commercial, accommodation and cultural information of the municipality. The council’s tourism department recently installed and presented the new device which links tourism to new technology and, it is hoped, help the area increase its competitiveness.

The recent presentation was attended by the Mayor, Emilio Navarro, councillor of tourism, Luz Goretti Gorrín and Juan Iniesta, representative of the company Instal Canarias. The pioneering intelligent signal contains a device called “Beacon” that is installed in the signal that acts as emitter through bluetooth technology. When the person approaches the signal and

connects to it, it will geolocate and give you the closest information that is around it and, also, will allow you to reach any other site in the municipality by establishing a connection with google maps. To do this, the person should download the application called “Inventrip” in playstore or googleplay of your phone. At the moment, the first pedestrian signal has been placed in the area near the Mirador de Los Gigantes and in this first phase will work with

the signage of the entire tourist area to later bring this work to the area of middle and upper area of the municipality. At first, the information is in three languages English, German and Spanish but can be extended to other languages. “ With this initiative the municipality intends to take another step in its competitiveness in tourism and serve as an example to other municipalities of the island and higher administrations,” said a council spokesman.

Puerto flying high as tourism figures soar and profitability increases RECOVERY CONTINUES

P

UERTO de la Cruz is consolidating its tourist recovery with very encouraging data, council leaders have revealed.

Puerto is one of the municipalities of Tenerife with the best improvement in tourism figures with 811,104 tourists up to November, 15.5 per cent more than in the

same period of 2015. Data for the future is also described as “encouragingly optimistic”. “The numbers speak for themselves and endorse this roadmap that marks the path

of the tourism policy that has been carried out in the municipality in recent years, with Puerto de la Cruz being one of the municipalities of Tenerife that has improved the most with 52,715 tourists staying in November 2016, 9.4 per cent more tourists than in the same month of 2015,” said a council spokesman. “But the statistical data of the first quarter of the year produced by Turismo de Tenerife is more encouraging in Puerto than in other tourist destinations of the island. The number of visitors hosted in the city grew 15.5 per cent more tourists, according to the data accumulated until November and taking as reference the same month of the year 2015.” The Mayor of Puerto, Lope Afonso added: “With an increase in the number of tourists staying at around 16 per cent already in November, we can say that the data for Puerto de la Cruz is excellent, which

consolidates the improvement experienced in 2015 and augurs a very good annual figure, fruit of the efforts of the administrations that work side by side in the reconversion and modernisa-tion of the destination.” Until November, the city has housed 811,104 tourists, 108,941 more than in the same stretch of the year 2015. Total occupancy reached 80.5 per cent on average in this period, compared to 68 per cent in the previous year, 18 per cent more. It has also improved the data of overnight stays, which increases by 17.6 per cent and reaches 4,245,761 overnight stays. The profitability of the destination has also improved and the prices paid by tourists are the highest since 2010. The Spanish Destination Profitability Barometer, by Exceltur, indicates that the average income per room available (RevPar) in Puerto in the

accumulated period from June to September 2016 has increased by 18 per cent, with the average price per room in this period of 50.7 euros. National tourism continues to represent the highest percentage of tourists visiting Puerto de la Cruz, according to data accumulated in November 2016, representing 46.6 per cent (378,324 tou-rists), a year-on-year increase of 7.2 per cent. It is followed by German tourism accounting for 23.9 per cent (194,009), also improving by 18.3 per cent; and the British, who account for 9.3 per cent of the total share of tourists (75,476 tourists), an

increase of 45 per cent. It is followed by the Finns who represent 2.4 per cent (19.497), and the French 2.2 per cent (18.071) Noteworthy is also the increase in tourists coming from Eastern countries accounting for 1.8 per cent with an increase of 70.6 per cent year-on-year. The improvement in the figures in the extra-hotel sector, apartments, has increased by a 19.2 per cent increase in the year-on-year variation of the accumulated period up to November 2016, 34,844 more customers than in the same period of 2015.

BREAKTHROUGH MEETING

San Miguel and Arona to liaise to “improve facilities and life in Guargacho”

S

AN Miguel de Abona and Arona have agreed to launch a study on joint actions to improve Guargacho.

The local governments of both municipalities stressed the importance of working in coordination on issues related to sports, security, education, communication and fiestas, as well as strengthening services provided in certain public facilities. The need for improvements was raised during a meeting between the Mayors of San

Miguel de Abona and Arona, Arturo González and José Julian Mena, respectively. They agreed joint actions could be carried out to improve the quality of life of the approximately 5,500 inhabitants (between the two municipalities). Other potential targets included the El Monte college, wake room, doctor’s office and

cultural, leisure and sports complexes, among others. “The implementation of joint actions to provide a series of services in Guargacho is fundamental and now both municipalities will have to work to make these ideas a reality, as it will allow us to share expenses and achieve greater efficiency in public resources,” said Sr. Gonzalez who organised the meeting. He praised the interest shown by both municipalities to address coordination issues for Guargacho, pointing out that some of the facilities were San Miguel soil

such as the cultural centre, football field and health centre. “We have verified that both the Arona Mayor and the councillors of his government understood the importance of collaborating and assuming maintenance, cleaning and security work so that the residents of Guargacho can continue to enjoy these services,” he added. “”The meeting held, therefore, has been a breakthrough. Now we have to give legal form to the commitments we have acquired among all parties to implement it as soon as possible.”

La Laguna tackles accessibility in city centre

LOWERING PAVEMENTS

L

A Laguna has initiated the improvement of the accessibility of 61 points in the centre of the city.

The local council is acting in eight streets where it will make an investment of almost 42,000 euros. Specifically, the work will be carried out in calles Coslada, Alfredo Torres Edwars, Baltazar Nuñez, in Hermano Mateo, Teobaldo Power, Heraclio Sánchez, Doctor Antonio González and Barcelona.

Five hurt in bus crash

F

09

IVE people in the same car were all injured in an accident involving a bus in Santa Cruz.

The accident happened on the Los Camitos road just before 10pm. Those hurt were three men, all aged 21, a 17-year-old youth and another man, aged 31. All of them were taken to hospital although their various injuries were described as “less severe”.

Councillor for works and infrastructures, Agustin Hernandez said the aim was to substantially improve accessibility in these areas. “It is an intervention that is part of a global plan in which other municipal areas participate and have counted on entities that work in favour of the inclusion of reduced mobility in the urban environment,” he explained. These works will be carried out for approximately a month and a half and will consist of lowering or eliminating kerbs and other barriers, plus the installation of tactile paving, as well as road signage.

La Laguna urged to become “Alzheimer’s solidarity city”

A Laguna should be doing more to help people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and their families, it is being claimed.

The Popular Party has formally asked the city council to give greater support as a matter of urgency and to declare itself a “Solidarity city with Alzheimer’s”. “La Laguna must commit to supporting groups working with people with Alzheimer’s disease so that they can develop activities that promote social awareness and sensitivity to the disease and contribute to alleviating their needs, “ said PP spokesman, Antonio Alarcó. Alzheimer ’s is the most prevalent type of dementia. Currently, this disease affects 3.5 million people in Spain, between those who suffer directly (about 800,000) and their family caregivers. “It is, therefore, a problem of socio-sanitary character

whose main approach is still established in the family,” says the PP. There is still no effective treatment or adequate prevention to alleviate the effects of the disease and it is estimated that its prevalence will double in the next 20 years due mainly to the longer life expectancy of the population. This, says the PP, has a big impact on the Canaries and therefore in San Cristóbal de La Laguna. “The direct and indirect costs generated by Alzheimer ’s between families exceed 30,000 euros per year, which add up to the insufficient provision of specific socio-health resources that are available to meet the needs of the people and families affected,” said Sr. Alarcó .

IFTEEN unemployed young people in Puerto de la Cruz have been given jobs and training under a new works scheme.

“Puerto de la Cruz Conecta” will last for eleven months and 14 days and will involve the development and maintenance of web pages. All 15 are under the age of 30 and have no specific training in a profession. The project has a total cost of 215,114.57 euros, of which 60 per cent (€ 129,068.74) will be financed by the Canary Islands Employment Service . In addition to the 15 unemployed, the project also includes the hiring of a management team composed of a director, a teacher, a coordinator and an assistant, who will be in charge of the management and proper

execution of the project. Councillor for employment, Antonia María Domínguez said she was delighted Puerto had received authorisation for the scheme and was sure the 15 would benefit long-term. They will help to improve the website of the Centre for Business Initiatives and the municipal market. Te mayor of Puerto, Lope Afonso, said the objective of the current Government Group had always been to “improve the employment data of the city, with training for unemployed people at risk of exclusion for lack of training specific to develop a profession.”

G

RANADILLA council is expanding the parking places in the centre of Los Abrigos.

The work is centred in the sporting area of the fishing nucleus and its environment, in particular, in calle La Fragata, where there have been 32 more car park spaces, of which four are for motorcycles and two reserved for the handicapped. The total municipal budget allocated for this was 44.405 euros. The Mayor, José Domingo Regalado, accompanied by the councillor for works, Concepción Cabrera, and transport councillor, Fredi Oramas, met on the spot to see the results of the work. Sr. Regalado said these actions responded to an important demand in this coastal enclave, where the project of the TF-643 road in the crossing of Los Abrigos, after its adjudication last December, must be added, together with the construction of new parking spaces in the vicinity of the school of Los Abrigos, as well as the lighting of sports facilities.

New playground sets the scene for more improvements in Guía de Isora

A

new playground has opened in plaza Aveti in Tejina de Isora.

This area of Guia de Isora, in which around 1,000 people live, will also have renovated furniture throughout the square, biosaludable apparatus for adults and a ramp that will allow the total accessibility of the users. The Mayor, Pedro Martín, thanked the involvement of all the residents and especially the Association Aveti, so that this park became a reality. “This is a very old claim and we have fulfilled our commitment,” he said. Among those present at the inauguration was the former councillor of finance, Javier Hernandez, who together with the current councillor for human resources, Lucía González, made a special effort to get this park. “The council has made an investment close to € 85,000 for Aveti Park,” explained the councillor for urbanism, José Miguel Mesa, “an investment that will be accompanied by many others planned within a plan for improvements in the parks of the different areas of the municipality with an endowment of about 200,000 € “. In this sense, the projects for the conditioning of the playgrounds of Chiguergue, Chirche, Chío and Vera de Erques have already been awarded. Improvements at Piedra Hincada, Guía centre and Playa San Juan will begin in the coming weeks.

Major two million euro project to transform plaza and parking of Playa San Juan

YEAR-LONG WORK

Work has started on the new plaza and parking lots of Playa San Juan

T

HE old square will be transformed into a new space, with garden areas and a playground. An underground car park will also be built.

The site is in the centre of the town, between calles Juan Carlos I, Reina Sofía and Isla de La Gomera. The old church square will become a multifunctional space that will allow maximum use of public space and better

conditions for nearby establishments. “The one in Playa San Juan is the only town square that has not been renovated and is clearly in very bad shape,” explained the Mayor, Pedro Martín. “This work was one of

the pending subjects that we had not been able to carry out so far because it is a very ambitious project. Added to the lack of a suitable place is the serious problem of parking places that there are in the town and especially in the centre.” The main complication of the work is the great difference in the gradients of the streets that surround it. The solution

consists of the construction of the square in a single plane, so that it is an accessible space, with vegetation in the side walls and garden areas in the interior; a playground and an area for outdoor activities and shows. The municipal project seeks to recover this space for public use and provide the area with a car park that accom-

modates a large number of vehicles. The car park will have 84 spaces, including two for the recharging of electric vehicles, which will be a solution for virtually all vehicles that are usually parked from the entrance roundabout to Playa San Juan on Juan Carlos I street until almost reaching the Paseo Marítimo . The municipal officials have held meetings with social groups and traders of the area to explain the project and minimise the inconveniences that may arise from the works which will be progressively developed so that the bars will not see all the free space in the exterior blocked and to allow access to the shops during the duration of the works. The investment is 2,389,940 euros apart from the costs of the drafting of the project, management of work and furniture to be placed in the

square. The municipality is planning to also acquire a plot in Playa San Juan to enable a temporary parking area during the works. The square has already been demoted, the trees cut down and the structures demolished. The works are expected to last for more than a year depending, to a large extent, on the characteristics of the terrain once the excavations in the square have begun. It should be remembered that both the square and the old church - which has already been exonerated as a place of worship - were owned by the Bishopric of Tenerife. At the time, the Isoran mayor, Pedro Martín, negotiated the provision of municipal land in the vicinity where the current church was built, in exchange for the bishopric to give up these facilities.

Keeping senior cats happy and healthy

Hospital of the Inmaculada, Puerto de la Cruz Meet Belle Hi, I’m Belle and I so want to find my forever home and family soon. I am almost one year old and was abandoned at the gates of K9 by my previous family when I was only four months old. I guess they got tired of me when I was no longer a small puppy. My people at K9 say not to feel bad about it – I did nothing wrong. Certainly I think everyone here at the refuge loves me. They call me Beautiful Belle and say I am such a good and sweetnatured dog. My favourite thing here at the refuge is going out for walks with my best friends, Bloom and Buster. We love to run off lead and play together. My walkers say, though, that I am the quieter of the three – I don’t go far from their side and always come back when called. That’s because I like to do the right thing always and am quite grown up for my age.

By the way, I’m only mediumsized – so not too big! I also love to learn and enjoy my training sessions very much. It’s okay here at the refuge but I get a little stressed sometimes because of the noise and would love to have my own special family. Do you have a place in your home and heart for me, please? I promise that, in return, I’ll be a loyal, loving and devoted companion for many years to come. If you would like to meet me, please get in touch with my people at K9 in any of the ways mentioned below.

ATS are living longer than ever due to modern improvements in veterinary care and nutrition.

T

HE New Year began, as always, for the Hospital of the Imaculada in Puerto de la Cruz, gratefully accepting a donation from Teide Lodge 34 to help them provide invaluable care for the residents, who are elderly ladies who have no sustainable income. The Hospital was founded more than 100 years ago and is administered by the Sisters of Maria Madre de la Iglesia. Sister Francisca Perez-Garcia, Mother Superior, receives a cheque from the Lodge Secretary Don Oliver and “Jim” Brown, both past Masters of the Lodge Although Teide Lodge has fewer members than many of the other Masonic Lodges on the Island of Tenerife it has regularly been able to make annual donations, in excess of 700 euros, of charitable aid for the Hospital, which has, in the past, been used to purchase bedding, specialist equipment etc. This year’s donation of 802 euros will be used to purchase much needed kitchen equipment to cater for the needs of the 60 elderly ladies who reside in the Hospital.

Senior cats make great pets, but they can require a bit of special care. Cats, like humans, often struggle mentally and physically as they age. Arthritis makes it difficult to get around, and changes in their brains cause confusion and behavioural issues. None of this needs to cause a problem though with a little extra care. Work with your vet to create and maintain a healthy diet for your cat. There are lots of specialist foods for senior cats that can help with various health issues that may develop like kidney problems and arthritis. Ver y elderly cats may become disoriented. If this happens confine your cat to a few safe and comfortable rooms if it seems to become confused easily. Make sure that it is confined to rooms that get a lot of use as your cat may become more affectionate than ever as it ages. Many elderly cats become more vocal, particularly in the middle of the night, when they are restless and confused. Try calling out to your cat in soothing tones but if this behaviour becomes a problem see your vet they may be able to prescribe a very mild sedative. Ver y elderly cats can develop litter tray problems, but you can take steps to prevent bad behaviour. Consider placing more litter boxes around your house so that your cat is never too far away from one. If you typically use high-sided boxes, switch to a lower one so your cat can get in and out more easily. Don’t skimp on socialization and play just because your cat is sleeping more. Older cats need mental stimulation and physical exercise to keep them interested and fit. Try using foodbased puzzle toys, wands with feathers or bells. Regularly groom your

elderly cat as it may not be as capable of grooming as it was in it’s younger years. A little bit of extra care can go a long way towards improving the health of a senior cat. Here are some reasons that adopting an older cat just makes sense.

Adoptions Please consider adopting an adult cat. When cared for properly, cats can live well into their late teens, and sometimes early twenties. Blanca a stunning pure white five year old female with powder blue eyes and her best buddy Ali, a 2 year old beautiful male tabby, need a forever home preferably together as they love each other very much. A little outside space such as a small garden or terrace would be good but they are not wanderers so it doesn’t have to be large. They have had everything done, vaccinations, neutering microchip etc. so they are ready immediately. All cats go on trial so you can be sure you’ve made the right decision. If you would like to ask questions or meet them with no obligation ring or whatsapp Maria on 646629129 (7 days a week 9.00 – 18.00), message us on Facebook or contact us from our website www.catswelfare-tenerife.com. All our adult cats awaiting adoption can be seen on our website at www.cats-welfaretenerife.com/pets.

Donations Good condition items can be dropped into the shop on San Blas in Golf del Sur (Behind Hiperdino). It is open seven days a week 10.00 until 18.00 but on Saturdays is open from 10.00 until 16.00. If you don’t have transport or have large bulky items such as furniture and household effects to donate

Freemasonry is a secular, fraternal and charitable

PANATE, an Association which assists people affected by autism inTenerife, was founded in July 1995 by a group of parents whose children were in need of help. In 2007 Apanate North Central was created to meet a growing demand for help, in and around La Laguna and La Orotava. The Association promotes many activities to contribute to the improvement of the living conditions of the people who are on the autistic spectrum and ensure their full integration in family, social and labour, at all stages of life: children, youth, adults and seniors citizens. The day centre in La Orotava is managed by APANATE but depends on of grant of the Cabildo, in particular of the IASS, who

contribute 85% of the running costs of this service. However, the work of the group is funded by the families of APANATE (33% ) with the remainder of the required finance being raised from specific events organised for that purpose:- the sale of products such as Calendars , T Shirts and “Piggy Banks” etc. and donations from individuals, friends and organisations e.g. Lodge Teide 34 which is a Masonic Lodge in Puerto de la Cruz.

Lanzarote’s new Atlantic Museum opens its doors with unique underwater ceremony!

T

HE Atlantic Museum of Lanzarote had officially opened its doors to the public with the most unusual of ceremonies!

This is the first museum of underwater art in Europe, with incredible eco-friendly sculptures made by award-winning Jason deCaires Taylor submerged just below the sea. The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Pedro San Ginés, and British echoescultor Jason were responsible for the traditional ribbon cutting, in this case, with the particularity of performing it under the sea!

“We hope that the Atlantic Museum of Lanzarote will constitute a portal into another world and promote a better understanding of the precious marine environment and our maximum dependence on it,” said the two from the seabed of the bay of Las Coloradas, while authorities, guests and the media shared the historic moment from a surface ship. After taking a tour of the Atlantic Museum, Pedro San

Ginés expressed his satisfaction “for culminating a project of this magnitude, which has been, even before its inauguration, an element of international projection of the Lanzarote brand and one that will contribute a remarkable added value to the tourist image of the island “. The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands, Mariate Lorenzo, for her part, pointed out that this initiative is an exponent of the synergies that can be created between tourism, culture and sport. “From the tourism point of view, it is an attraction that will attract visitors from all over the world; culture, because its maker is one of the most relevant creators of the current scene and because the elaboration of the sculptures has entailed an arduous artistic and technical process, and sport, because it will boost the industry of diving, snorkelling and sailing, which are

water sports, one of the pillars of the islands offer beyond the sun and beach,” said the Minister. Mariate Lorenzo said the Atlantic Museum had already generated huge publicity and become the leading tourist attraction in terms of international attention. Tourism councillor for Lanzarote Cabildo, Echedey Eugenio, stressed that with the completion of the work “Lanzarote has a differential element over other destinations. The Atlantic Museum will undoubtedly become one more attraction and a fundamental promotional element for a destination like Lanza-rote, which is distinguished by its quality and excellence.” The dozens of statues created by Jason deCaires Taylor are situated 14 metres deep which allows divers to visit them. They are already attracting incredible sealife. The creation of this monumental project has lasted more

than two years and aims to create a strong visual dialogue between art and nature. Designed with a conservationist approach to create a largescale artificial reef, the first works, which were installed in February 2016, have already seen a considerable increase in species generation and abundance rates and are already frequented by angel sharks, barracudas and sardines, octopuses, marine sponges and the occasional butterfly stripe. This is the first time the artist has installed such large architectural structures. The new facilities include a wall of 100 tons and 30 metres in length; the sculpture of a botanical garden that refers to the local flora and fauna and a composition of 200 human figures of real size that form a human swirl. The museum, which occupies an area of 50x50 metres, is built with environmentally neutral pH materials, and all the pieces have been desig-

ned to adapt to endemic marine life. The project has been promoted by the Centres of Art, Culture and Tourism of the Cabildo of Lanzaroteand counted on the co-financing of the Government of the Canary Islands. The museum includes an entrance and an exit and the pieces are arranged in a sequence of 12 installations. The most recent ones include the immortal pyre, made up of a series of concrete sticks representing a traditional funeral pyre and “Crossing the Rubicon” consists of a group of 35 figures walking towards a wall and a door under the sea, which represents a boundar y between two realities and a portal to the Atlantic Ocean. The wall, which is part organic, industrial part, measures 30 metres in length by four metres in height and contains a simple rectangular door in its centre.

Card scanning gang rips off more than 1,000 tourists in 1.5 million euro scam

CREDIT SWIPING

P

OLICE in the Canaries arrested 31 members of an organised criminal group which ripped-off more than 1,000 foreign holidaymakers to the tune of at least 1.5 million euros. The gang targeted tourists in a number of shops and bazaars, swiping credit cards for legitimate purchases on repeated occasions rather than just once. “They told the customer the card didn’t appear to be working or the charge hadn’t been accepted but instead were putting through the price several times,” said a police spokesman. On one occasion, they tried to con one holidaymaker in Gran Canaria by repeating the operation during an entire month with an attempt to take a total of

more than half a million pounds! It is believed well over 1,000 holidaymakers in the south of Tenerife also fell victim but this could prove to be substantially higher if more complaints come in. “The network attracted tourists to their shops with prices well below the market,” said the spokesman. The investigation began after a bank on Gran Canaria warned of a series of fraudulent transactions committed through a point of sale card scanning machine. “This was the occasion

when the gang tried to bill the card owner with more than 700,000 euros in a period of time of less than one month,” said the police. A first batch of arrests was then made, with officers discovering the scam was more widespread than originally thought. They discovered other cases of similar fraud following the same pattern in the popular south of Tenerife, much frequented by Brits. The organised gang was managing to get point of sale card machines from people who worked in banking institutions, giving them a commission for the service. The devices were then installed in local shops next to legal POS machines.

Once bogus transactions landed up in the gang’s bank accounts, they would quickly withdraw the money in cash, delivering it to other members of the organisation or make bank transfers. They even saved some of it in other accounts and paid commissions. Ten people arrested are believed to have been responsible pening the bank accounts and acquiring the POS. Once the bank accounts were analysed, 15 individuals were detected as beneficiaries and collaborators of the organisation. They face charges of fraud, belonging to a criminal organisation and money laundering.

As for Lanzarote, it received last month the visit of 216,032 foreign passengers, which translates into 37,625 passen-

gers more than in December 2015, an increase of 21.09 per cent. Between January and December 2016 2,421,888 foreign passengers arrived in Lanzarote, 10.42 per cent more than in the same period of 2015, that is, 228,597 more foreign passengers. Finally, La Palma received 21,949 foreign passengers in December, an increase of 74.71 per cent over the same month of the previous year, with 9,386 more foreign passengers. Fuerteventura celebrates court order against electricity turrets

T

HE Cabildo of Fuerteventura is celebrating a court ruling which paralyses the installation of electric turrets between Gran Tarajal and Puerto del Rosario.

President Marcial Morales says that “the island can now have an electrical system without barbarities that destroy a singular landscape.” The order was issued by the Supreme Court of Justice of the Canary Islands who ruled against Red Eléctrica de España. “Today we have taken an important step because these works are paralysed. We are going to fight for a sustainable and cared-for island where it is necessar y, “ said the president of the Cabildo at a press conference. Sr. Morales, who was with environment councillor, Edilia Perez, and the PSC-PSOE spokesman in the Cabildo, Juan Jiménez, said the TSJC had backed the people of Fuerteventura who deserved an electrical system ruining the countryside. Edilia Pérez said they had immediately written to Red Eléctrica reminding them it was now their duty to stop work immediately on the project. Juan Jiménez said: “This is great news for Fuerteventura.”

La Gomera calls for banana aid Canaries hit after devastating winds all-time high for organ donations

I

SLAND leaders on La Gomera are calling for special aid to help banana growers recover from catastrophic winds which caused extensive damage at the end of 2016.

They say Hermigua in particular should be designated a “catastrophic area” because 30 per cent of the plantations there had been destroyed. About a fifth of the crop in Valle Gran Rey was damaged whilst the area of La Dama in Vallehermoso suffered ten per cent. The very strong winds hit the island at the end of December and leaders have recently been out and about to inspect the damage and see what can be done to help farmers. The Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Waters, Narvay Quintero, and the president of the Cabildo of La Gomera, Casimiro Curbelo,

visited several affected farms. Sr. Quintero said they were studying the adoption of measures aimed at alleviating the damages over a cultivated banana area of 173 hectares. He expressed solidarity with those affected by the meteorological phenomenon. The wind also affected other crops, such as avocado, although to a lesser extent. Sr. Curbelo said declaring Hermigua a catastrophic area would help farmers get their insurance payouts and complementary aid from the Canar y Government. The damage to the banana plantations will lead to a lack of production in the coming years.

A

35-year-old man was seriously injured after his paraglider crashlanded in Lanzarote.

The accident happened in Montaña Juan del Hierro in the municipality of Teguise and left him with a suspected broken leg. It prompted a full-scale rescue involving the police, Civil Protection, emergency group and medics. The 112 centre received a call that the paraglider crashed whilst taking off. The fracture to his lower limb was described as of a serious character.

T

HREE people suffered burns, one of them extensively, as a result of a house fire in Lanzarote.

The blaze broke out in calle Hermano Zerolo in Arrecife just before 6.30am and affected the trio inside. A woman, aged 52, had severe burns. A 17-year-old youth and another man also needed hospital treatment but their injuries were less severe. Police said the fire caused serious damage to the whole house

Tragedy as swimmers try to save man’s life

S

UNBATHERS and swimmers on a beach in Lanzarote tried desperately to save the life of a man who got into trouble in the sea.

The incident happened in the early afternoon at Playa de La Cantería in the municipality of Haría. Medics, the police, Civil Guard and Civil Protection all rushed to the scene following reports that a man had been pulled from the water by other bathers. The victim was found to be in cardiac arrest and prolonged resuscitation was carried out whilst the emergency helicopter landed on the beach. SUC staff then continued with advanced techniques but the man could not be revived and was declared dead at the scene.

Three trapped on balcony PANIC ATTACKS

T

HREE people were trapped on balconies when fire broke out in a three-storey building in Gran Canaria. They were rescued by the fire brigade and taken to hospital, though all escaped injury. A 56-year-old man suffered chest pains whilst a woman, aged 54, needed treatment for an anxiety attack. Another man was also taken to hospital for anxiety. The incident happened in San Bartolomé de Tirajana in the early evening.

H

EALTH chiefs in the Canary Islands have thanked donors and their families following a record-breaking 2016.

The archipelago reached an annual high in donations and is above the national average. The hospital centres performed 141 kidney transplants, seven pancreas and 51 liver transplants, thanks to the solidarity of 98 deceased donors and 14 living donors. A spokesman for the Ministry of Health said: “The 98 organ donations achieved in our community, an increase of 14 per cent, is the best result in the history of our donation programmes and an extraordinary increase with respect to the number of donors from the previous year, obtaining a rate of 46.7 donors per million inhabitants, exceeding the national rate of 43.4.” The public reference hospitals of the Canary Health Service have obtained a total of 247 viable transplant organs during the year 2016, an increase of 24 per cent compared to last year. By hospitals, a total of 86 kidney and seven pancreatic transplants have been registered in the Hospital Universitario de Canarias; 51 of liver at the Hospital

Universitario Nuestra Senora de Candelaria and 55 of kidney in the Complejo Hospitalario Universitario Insular Materno Infantil de Canarias. The Canarias University Hospital is the autonomous reference centre for live donor kidney transplantation. During 2016, 14 of these donations were made in the Canary Islands, which means practically maintaining the annual activity. The number of kidney transplants performed in 2016 has risen to 141, a result only surpassed by the 145 transplants performed in 2007 and a 14.6 per cent increase in 2015. The 55 kidney transplants carried out in the Hospital Universitario Insular Materno Infantil was a historic record for this hospital, which started the transplant programme in 2007. Health chiefs say donor decisions are often taken during times of great distress. They have also acknowledged and appreciated the work and dedication of the more than one hundred hospital professionals.

ALL-TIME RECORDS

Spanish tourism and spending way up and Brits continue to Holiday plane pilots came flock in MALAGA FRIGHT

face to face with paraglider in near miss

S

PAIN has set a new all-time record of inbound tourists, with 75.3 million arrivals in 2016.

This is an increase of 9.9 per cent on 2015, according to Minister for Energy, Tourism and Digital Agenda, Álvaro Nadal. Total spending by tourists who visited Spain amounted to 77 billion euros, also a new record, which represents an 8.3 per cent increase on the previous year. Similarly, the average spend per tourist rose by 3.75 per cent to stand at 1,023 euros per person. The average daily spend per tourist rose to 138 euros, a 6.5 per cent increase on 2015. These figures were prepared from information provided by Turespaña and the statistics provided by the FRONTUR and EGATUR surveys of the National Statistics Institute.

Arrival of tourists from January to November Among the main emitting markets between January and November, the strength of tourism from the United Kingdom is particularly worthy of mention, with the arrival of almost 17 million tourists, a 12.3 per cent increase on the first 11 months of 2015. This was followed by the arrival of 10.8 million tourists from France, a 7.1 per cent increase, and 10.7 million tourists from Germany, a 6.1 per cent increase on the same months of 2015. By destination, Catalonia was the leading autonomous region to receive inbound tourists, with a total of more than 17 million, a 3.8 per cent increase on the first 11 months of 2015, followed by the Balearic Islands, with 12.9 million tourists and growth of 12 per cent, and the Canary Islands, with 12 million tourists

and growth of 12.7 per cent.

Higher spending between January and November According to data provided by the INE, the accumulated figures to November 2016 show that spending increased across the board, with particularly high growth in the Region of Madrid (14.7 per cent), the Region of Valencia (13.6 per cent), the Canary Islands (10.7 per cent) and the Balearic Islands (10.4 per cent). In terms of emitting countries and compared with the same period of the previous year, particularly noteworthy growth was seen in spending by British tourists (up 12.2 per cent), followed by France (up 7.56 per cent), the Nordic countries (up 7.1 per cent), and Germany (up 4.7 per cent).

SELFIE QUEST

Tourist with backpack causes terrorist alert at Spanish metro station

A

tourist with a backpack who stopped to take selfies near a Spanish railway station caused panic after he was mistaken for a terrorist.

Police had to send out reinforcements to the metro in Valencia following reports that a man wearing some sort of headdress and long robe was “loitering” in the area. But after being stopped by officers on the busy platform, the embarrassed sightseer was

found to only have souvenirs in his backpack and selfies on his mobile phone. “The man, of Indian origin, and wearing a turban was on the way to the airport to return home,” said a police spokesman. “Panic was sparked when he stopped to take

some late selfies to show his family and other commuters reported their suspicions.” The incident happened in the Ayora station in Valencia and started when a worried traveller called the police. CCTV footage was examined and a description of the “wanted” man was circulated. “Officers then decided to intercept the man at another station to avoid causing more

panic and disruption,” said the police. Patrol cars screeched to a halt outside the Mislata station and passengers were allowed to leave before the suspect was approached. The stunned Indian man confirmed he had a ticket to return home and was stunned at the accusations. He was allowed to continue his journey.

The plane’s pilots, who say it came within 100 metres of the Boeing’s left wing, first thought it was a bird. They took the split second decision to swerve and bank to the right and the paraglider went the other way, avoiding what could have been a fatal crash. The shocking incident happened on March 12th last year but full details of the near miss for the Norwegian Air Shuttle Boeing 737-800 from London Gatwick have only just been revealed. The plane was approaching runway 13 when the crew just happened to look out of the window and spotted the paraglider perilously close and not picked up by the radar. They were both at the low height of 6,800ft. The stunned captain, a 45-year-old Belgian, later said: “We would probably agree with the person in the paraglider that it was our lucky day. I cannot begin to imagine what would have happened if the autopilot had still been engaged or if we had not looked outside. We definitely would not have been able to make the evasive maneuvre!”

The co-pilot was a 30year-old from Ireland. A conversation between the pair and the control tower included the following exchange....”We have a paraglider pretty close to us here.”....”Which position?”.....”Exactly what we are, 6,800ft”....”Same altitude?”...”Same altitude yes”....”Thank you for that information, that was very close!” An investigation by the Spanish CIACIA said the identity of the paraglider had never been established despite contact with paragliding federations. It is known that enthusiasts of the sport fly in the area without a club despite the restricted air space. Letters were also sent to the local council warning of the situation but no reply was ever received. Investigators who have just released their final report say the appropriate steps must be taken to increase vigilance in the Malaga runway area of the Valle de Abdalajis. After the incident, the aircraft continued with its descent and landed normally. There were no injuries and no damage to the Boeing.

Police find 8,000 illegal Drug trafficking gang used “weapons of war” with luxury speed boats to link to terrorist attacks smuggle hauls worth millions MOTHER SHIPS

P

OLICE who made Spain’s largest-ever black market seizure of 8,000 military weapons say the method used echoed the Paris “Charlie Hebdo” attack and a 2014 atrocity in Belgium. Four men and one woman were arrested in in the towns of Olot (Girona), Liendo (Cantabria), Galdácano and Guecho (Biscay) following a lengthy investigation. The criminal organisation was part of a network which bought unused weapons of war under the pretext of running a sports firm. They then sourced spare parts, reactivated the guns and put them up for sale on the black market.

A spokesman for the Spanish Government said: “This modus operandi used to purchase weapons is the same as the one used for the attacks carried out in Paris on January 7th, 2015, against employees of the satirical weekly ‘Charlie Hebdo’, in which 12 people were killed and another 11 injured, all with recommissioned weapons acquired at the time from a Slovak gunsmith.” He also confirmed the

police operation stemmed from the surveillance carried out on the weapons used by a terrorist in the attack against a Jewish museum in Brussels on May 24th 2014, in which four people were killed by shots fired by a citizen of French nationality and Algerian origin. Under-cover agents from Bilbao, Girona, Barcelona, Santander and Valencia were involved in the investigation. Once the decommissioned weapons were legally sourced, they were taken to a “sophisticated workshop” in Guecho and reactivated. So far, more than 8,000 military weapons ready for sale have been seized, including 29 long arms, various short arms, several canons and a range of ammunition of differing calibres. The Spanish Government says police are continuing to crackdown on the illegal sale of weapons to organised crime gangs and terrorists. The police operation is being supported by EUROPOL, which has provided specialists to the team working in this area.

P

OLICE have smashed an international drug trafficking gang which used ultra-fast expensive speed boats for highspeed smuggling runs between Morocco and Spain.

Seven people have been arrested, four in the Campo de Gibraltar and three others in Ceuta, and six large vessels seized. Drug squad officers said the boats had no identification and were capable of travelling at speeds way above the permitted limit. The narcos, based in Cadiz, collected drugs on the west coast of Morocco. “They used two types of boats to transport the drug, on the one hand approaching Spain with high-powered ships to pass the narcotic substance to other more discrete ones that simulated a recreational activity, trying not to raise suspicion” said a police spokesman. “Meanwhile, some members of the organisation carried out counter-vigilance efforts to

detect any police presence. The moment they reached the peninsula, the boats were taken out of the water and transported by road to an industrial warehouse in Algeciras.” “The power of the ships exceeded the regulation on high speed boats.” One of the heist was intercepted by a police helicopter when the pilot of a recreational boat was arrested with 18 bales of cannabis on board. The “mother ship” had also thrown another 20 bales into the sea

to be collected later. This area of the Spanish coast is well-known for drug smuggling. Police were only recently involved in a chase off Gibraltar when the traffickers threw four million pounds worth of cannabis into the sea to lighten their load and get away. Police later retraced the route of the chase and picked up 34 bales of cannabis resin. The drugs weighed around 800 kilos (1,800 pounds) and are estimated to have a street value of £4,050,000.

RECORD DECLINE

Rajoy aims for 20 million people in work

S

PAIN’S Prime Minister has described the country’s downward trend in unemployment figures as encouraging and confirmed the main goal is to reach 20 million people in work. Mariano Rajoy said the number of National Insurance contributors increased by more than half a million people in 2016, as was the case in both 2014 and 2015. ”The main target at this time is to see this repeated in 2017, 2018 and 2019 in order to reach the figure of 20 million people in work in our country,” he pleded. The President of the Government underlined that these figures are positive for pensioners, for companies, for those who have found a job and, above all, they are good for ensuring that people do not lose hope. “There are still a great many people who are looking for a job, there are too many of them, but we are working

to ensure they can find one,” he added. In December, the number of unemployed stood at 3,702,974 in December, with 390,534 fewer unemployed, the largest decline on record and the lowest level in the last seven years. The year-on-year decline in the unemployment rate stands at 9.54 per cent, the fastest rate since 1999. Over the last four years, unemployment has fallen by more than 1 million people (1.145.749). The number of contracts registered in the month of December amounted to a total of 1,699,018, the highest figure on record for a month of December. This represents an increase of 6.5% on December 2015.

Civil Guard’s nature service clamps down on animal cruelty AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

T

HE Civil Guard’s nature service Seprona carried out during 2016 more than 12,400 actions against animal abuse.

The most affected animals are dogs, although the performances also extend to other animals such as horses, roosters, reptiles, cows and sheep, among others. The agents have verified the commission of 783 criminal infractions of mistreatment / abandonment of domes-tic animals that have entailed the arrest or investigation of 490 people. As regards administrative infringements of domestic pet laws, the number of complaints amounts to 11,729, related to animal welfare, inadequate accommodation, animal hygiene, inadequate transport and documentary and health records . The crimes of mistreatment or abandonment of domestic

animals have stipulated penalties that can reach up to 18 months of imprisonment in the first case and a fine of six months and disqualification in the case of abandonment. Their interventions included: “Operation PUGNATOR”, developed in Asturias and Cantabria against cockfighting, which ended with more than 200 birds taken and 17 people arrested or imputed. ”Operation EARS”, carried out in the province of Huelva against animal abuse by amputations of ears and tails of hunting dogs, which culminated with 32 people arrested or imputed, including hunters and veterinarians. “Operation CHIRA”, carried out in the province of Zaragoza, for animal mistreatment, documen-

tary misrepresen-tation and fraud, with 182 dogs taken from Eastern Europe, 46 corpses of puppies recovered and five persons arrested and imputed. “Operation REINALDUS”, developed in the province of Huesca, with the intervention of 16 dogs raised and trained for fights. ”Operation PAKIRRI” carried out in Guadalajara, which ended with the arrest of a person for the repeated stabbing of a domestic cow until his death. The investigation began following a video posted on the network. One milestone case was the judgment of the Criminal Court No. 14 of Malaga which recently condemned the perpetrators of a collection centre for abandoned animals in Torremolinos for the continuous crimes of mistreatment of domestic animals. After the investi-

gation of SEPRONA, it was shown that they were dedicated to the indiscriminate slaughter of animals for economic reasons, without veterinary control and knowing the suffering they inflicted. Last July, the Directorate

Bogus medics arrested after women sold stomach ulcer pills for abortions

Illegal immigrant risks life by squeezing into car engine

P

OLICE have arrested three bogus medics who sold “abortion” pills used to treat stomach ulcers via Whatsapp but put dozens of women in hospital instead. The gang asked clients for 130 euros a time and are known to have made at least 100 sales across Spain. The majority of the women wishing to get rid of their pregnancies were taken so ill with side-effects from the bogus drug that they was rushed to hospital. “The pills were actually meant for treating gastric and duodenal ulcers but could bring on an abortion as a side effect,” said a spokesman for the Spanish police. The trio were arrested in Torrelavega (Cantabria), Bilbao and Madrid. One of them worked for a chemist who obtained the pills and the ringleader managed consultations via the telephone and Whatsapp. It was his role to “advise” on the medication and what dosage to take. “It is known that more than 100 people distributed throughout Spain acquired this drug and that in many cases had to be assisted in a hospital because of the effects of their

consumption,” said the spokesman. The investigation began after police received a tip-off that a man had sold drugs without a prescription over the internet. Officers discovered the scam was being run at a rnational level and that each tablet was being sold at a much higher cost than when legally marketed. The women also had to take FIVE pills to produce any effect. “Each box of 40 pills has a cost in the pharmacies of 10.40 euros and the detainees sold them for a price of between 15 and 20 euros a tablet, the minimum order being five pills, which meant a profit of around 700 euros per box,” said the police. One member of the gang was caught in the act of deliverying packages to various points of Spain. Various properties were raided when mobile phones were seized, together with 170 tablets in their original packaging, a computer and shipment records.

T

HIS desperate stowaway risked serious injury after trying to get into Spain squashed into a car’s engine!

The illegal immigrant squeezed himself into the tiny space and could easily have been electrocuted or badly burnt, said the police. The North African man was found in the Nissan Vanette after it drove off a ferry which had arrived at the port of Almeria. Customs officers were checking passengers and cars because it is a popular people-smuggling route from Africa. “They became suspicious because the driver and another passenger showed extreme signs of nervousness,” said the Civil Guard. “They decided to search the

vehicle and found the stowaway crouching in the engine between the various parts.” Some of the components had been moved around to make room for the immigrant but he still had to endure the hot, confined and dangerous space for several hours, particularly in the hold of the ferry. The man lacked all documents and will eventually be sent back to his original country. A 50-year-old man from Albacete and a 29-year-old from Caceres were arrested for attempted people smuggling.

General of the Civil Guard launched the campaign #yosipuedocontarlo against mistreatment and abandonment of domestic animals, with the aim of raising awareness in the protection and welfare of pets. This campaign has been

disseminated through the official channels of the Civil Guard in the different social networks and there have been numerous social media that have echoed this initiative, which has also had great acceptance among citizens.

MORE VICTIMS?

Physio arrested on suspicion of abusing women patients

P

OLICE in Spain have arrested a physiotherapist on suspicion of sexually abusing patients.

The 44-year-old is said to have rubbed them intimately in order to “treat their back pain.” He is thought to have violated five patients and attempted to have sex with at least one of them. Police say the physiotherapist claimed to be a specialist in osteopathic approach but abused his clients’ trust and took advantage of them during consultations. The Spaniard has been ordered to stay away from his clinic in Barcelona and has been reported to the College of Physiotherapists of Catalonia. Police said that in all the cases being investigated, the women went to him to seek help with back pain. They said he failed to use

any hygienic precautions, such as gel or gloves, and never asked for their medical history. None of the women signed any form agreeing to the bizarre treatment he carried out. At one stage, the man rented space in a medical centre but his contract was terminated after the owners heard of complaints. The 44-year-old then continued to use other spaces, including his own house and going to the home of one of the women. Police say the investigation remains open and they have not ruled out the possibility of further victims coming foward. The man is currently out on bail.

So that was 2016 in Puerto de la Cruz!

A Puerto point of view

T

HIS is when I usually do a brief summary of the things that have happened in Puerto de la Cruz during the last year, and give a brief rundown of all the projects completed, of the promises delivered and of the general upkeep of the town. This year I expected to be able to do the same, even sat at my keyboard with fingers poised while I racked my brain trying to think what to say. I use the word ‘finger’ in the plural because my typing skills have progressed to now being able to use two fingers on each hand. This is, at least, one achievement from 2016 that I can boast about, albeit a personal one. I know I am blathering instead of concentrating on the topic in hand, but the truth is I am stalling, trying desperate to think how to be able to put a positive spin on it, or at the very least of something to delay the inevitable. Alas I can put it off no longer, 2016 in Puerto was for me the year when nothing happened. I am disappointed; I was expecting more from the current team in the town hall, they were full of so many good ideas when they were canvassing for our vote. I will go further and say that for me personally the one word which best sums up Puerto throughout the year of 2016 is neglect. I have never seen the streets so dirty, the gardens so uncared for, trees and shrubs so unkempt, so many litter and rubbish bins overflowing and through the summer months so much garden rubbish left to rot on the roadside often for weeks on end, before being collected. This may sound very negative, but I report on things I see and speak as I find. Surely there must be something positive to say, calle Quintana, for example, yes, I assume that will be described as a success story for 2016, or at least it will be when it is finished. There has also been a lot of investment in the town’s hotels throughout the year. We are told that this investment is essential for the town’s recovery. To have modern hotels with facilities that the present day visitor demands is the number one priority and as such it should be tackled before all else. I have used this term before and I like it so I will say it again, what is the point of having 5* facilities in what is at best a 3* town. I use the word town to describe Puerto whereas others choose to call it a city. There is no word in Spanish to differentiate between the two, but for me the word city implies an element of grandeur which Puerto does not possess. Puerto is a town;

don’t try to over sell it. If hotel improvements are a priority above all else for the current administration then marketing has become their number one preoccupation, we have heard or seen little else during the last six months, it is the town hall’s new buzz word . Marketing has proved to be an effective tool for many organisations but it needs to be realistic, don’t make the town out to be something that it isn’t. A problem I find with marketing in general is that those involved in it begin to actually believe in all the hype. Is the town’s current marketing strategy a success? Visitor numbers for 2016 were certainly up, (I refer only to British visitors) but is that down to improvements to the town or the effectiveness of it marketing plan. I think it is safe to say that the answer is a resounding no; it is more likely due to the fact that the nambypamby British Foreign Office has effectively vetoed holidays in half of Europe’s popular holiday destinations by declaring them unsafe to travel to. With tour companies and more likely insurance companies afraid to take the risk they have turned to relatively safe Spain and the scramble to sign up available beds they have once again looked at Puerto de la Cruz. Let’s have a look at the town’s current marketing strategy; I’ll try to keep it short so as not to bore you too much. They are targeting the British market in 2017, perhaps they see us as gullible and likely to

believe their spin, but probably it’s because there has been a leap in numbers during 2016 which they will tr y to maintain. The Puerto ‘brand’, as they like to call it, (probably not as well known as Heinz, but they are working on it) has a new slogan, ‘Puerto de la Cruz, parte de ti’ which is translated as ‘Puerto de la Cruz, part of you’. Ok, but what is it supposed to mean and who is it aimed at? I assumed it was aimed at future visitors, but how is Puerto ever going to be part of them, if they are lucky a visitor spend two weeks here, if they are very lucky a visitor likes the place and returns, it hardly makes Puerto part of the you. I was wrong, it seems it is meant to imply the community spirit, that Puerto is one big happy family and that its residents are its best advocates. Wishful thinking, but I might be wrong and why if the people who live here are the best adverts for the town do they not use them in the town’s adverts or in posts on the multitude of social media sites we are bombarded with, instead of the same group of models/actors. Come on, keep it real, fat and ugly people are just as welcome in Puerto de la Cruz. There I have mentioned it, so let’s expand on it, social media, a great marketing tool when used correctly and there are many ‘official’ sites for Puerto de la Cruz, too many in fact and I am only referring to the ‘English’ language ones.

Some of them are very good and some of them are laughable, but that might just be down to my sense of humour. I know it is easy to criticize, but I wish they would use someone to post who is a real speaker of our language, who can write in real English, all too often they are phrased by someone who has either swallowed an Oxford Concise or believes that Google translate must be right, and why the current trend to try and make a post into poetic verse. Come on, get real, it is only a social media post which visitors spend at best a couple of seconds mulling over. I said I would keep it brief, but it has dragged on, I’m bored with it now, so I am sure you are as well, I have just one more thing to say on the subject. If local residents are to be great ambassadors for the town when is the local administration going to come good on its promises and provide them the things that the residents of surrounding towns enjoy, like a bus station, a municipal pool, a concert venue and why not a sports centre, they have the land. Or some things even easier to achieve, a clean and tidy town, (the town is not all about San Telmo) or traffic lights that aren’t out of action for months at a time. First impressions count for visitors and residents alike. The town may rely on visitors but it needs the support of its residents. So what of 2017, more of the same I guess, my expectations are not very high.

Unfair Spanish mortgage clauses Can you make a claim? BY JOHN HATRICK, TENERIFE SOLICITORS

S

OME readers may have heard about recent rulings regarding unfair clauses and charges relating to Spanish mortgages. The subject is currently generating huge public interest due to the number of property owners in Spain with mortgages that are potentially affected. There are now two separate issues which may give rise to a claim against the banks. Firstly, the issue of interest payments under a mortgage. Secondly, the issue of administrative fees and charges imposed upon property owners by the banks under a mortgage. We shall now look at each issue in turn:

MORTGAGE INTEREST PAYMENTS On 9th May 2013 the Spanish Supreme Court declared null and void the ‘Clausula Suelo’ (minimum interest ‘floor clause’). Whilst most mortgages are linked to the Euribor base rate, (e.g. an interest rate of 1.5% above

Euribor), many also contain a clause imposing a minimum interest rate (typically 3%), regardless of whether the Euribor actually drops lower. These floor clauses were ruled illegal for “lack of transparency”. However, to the frustration of many, the court declared that claims could not be made retrospectively ‘to avoid serious economic repercussions for the banking industry’. However, the case was then referred to the European Court of Justice, who announced on 21st December 2016 that the restrictions imposed in the 2013 Judgment were contrary to European law and that Spanish banks must refund all money collected under the abusive ‘floor clauses’.

What you will have to look for as a consumer is a particular advice, given that the conditions are specific to each loan, and will have to study what strategy to follow in each case to make the claim against the banking entities and how to negotiate for no Be misled by unfavorable products or offers or continue to be covered under covert clauses.

MORTGAGE ADMINISTRATION/ ARRANGEMENT FEES On taking out a mortgage in Spain, many consumers have been hit with different fees and charges e.g. administration fees, bank notary and land registry fees etc. On 23rd December 2016, the Supreme Court issued Decree 705/2015 of December 23, which ruled null and void certain types of clauses

imposing charges upon mortgage customers. The rationale behind the decision was that it is the banks who benefit from the legalisation, registration and protection of their mortgages, hence they should bear some or all of those costs. So what expenses can potentially be recovered from the banks? Primarily, the bank’s notary and land registry fees for finalising and registering a mortgage, plus any stamp duty taxes paid in respect of the registration. Other expenses such as arrangement fees may also be potentially recoverable, depending on the circumstances, but such additional claims will have to be tested in the courts. Before making a claim in respect of either or both of the above matters, each case must be individually assessed and the relevant mortgage clauses studied to ascertain whether they are likely to breach the guidelines set out in the latest

rulings. Whilst we are awaiting further clarification, it appears that no time limit has been placed on bringing retrospective claims. Hence, customers who took out applicable mortgages many years ago may also be entitled to bring a claim. To make an assessment, we will need to review your mortgage deed. In respect of interest claims, we will need to see relevant mortgage statements and the receipt for your last payment. In respect of expenses claims, we will need to see invoices or statements detailing all

relevant expenses, plus receipt or evidence of any relevant tax paid (if applicable). For properties which is the client’s main residence (i.e. not a holiday home), we will also need to see a Certificado de Empadronimiento (Town Hall Certificate of registration to live in the borough). Tenerife Solicitors charge a fixed fee for consultations of €60 which is fully refundable against any subsequent work we do for you in the matter. In certain cases, we may thereafter be able to offer no-winno-fee representation, subject to qualifying terms and conditions.

To arrange a consultation, please call Tenerife Solicitors now on 922 717845 (0871 218 0063 from the UK) or email us at info@tenerifesolicitors.com

How to train your dog to walk nicely on the lead

EXPERT TIPS

T

HE key to teaching your dog to walk nicely on the lead is to teach them that not pulling is the fastest way to get to where they want to

go.

Teaching your dog not to pull takes time, patience and consistency but the benefits can be huge. Teach your dog to walk without pulling: Start by standing still and quiet. Allow your dog the full length of his lead. Remain still and quiet when your dog is ignoring you but the split second he pays you attention praise him and give him a treat. Once you have your dog’s attention you can move off - use your voice and treats to encourage your dog to stay close to you when walking. Always reward your dog when they are walking on a loose lead. If your dog moves too far away from you, before the lead goes tight, stop and be still and quiet until he pays you attention and moves closer to you. Reward and move off again. This must happen every single time your dog moves away. Practice this in short and regular sessions. Walking around distractions can cause dogs to pull. Place something your dog would really like to get to on the floor, like a toy. If your dog pulls on the lead to get towards the toy, stop and call your dog towards you. His reward for walking on a loose lead is getting to his toy. Here the dog learns that pulling just slows things down.

Top tips to give a cat a good home C

ATS can become ill living in cold or wet places. Provide a comfortable, dry, draught-free, clean and quiet place for your feline friend to rest. Cats need to visit the toilet easily. Give regular access to a suitable toilet place, outside or a litter tray, kept separate to their eating and sleeping areas. Noises and objects often scare cats. They need to have somewhere to hide away from perceived danger. To prevent your cat suffering, always provide access to safe hiding places to allow him/her to escape feeling afraid. Multiple cats need enough toys, cat beds and hiding places to allow them to get away from one another when they feel the need to be alone. Check out our online shop with some great ideas for your cats. Cats are very intelligent - a bored cat is an unhappy cat. Make sure there are plenty of things to do with enough space to exercise, climb and play. Indoor cats need more to keep

them entertained. For more advice see: keeping cats indoors. Cats are active, needing opportunities to run, jump and climb. They often feel safest when high so provide a suitable high place to climb and rest, e.g. shelves. Make sure the size and temperature of anywhere they are left (including vehicles) is

appropriate. Cats are inquisitive so hazards at home and outside could injure them. Care for your cat by making sure your cat is in a safe, secure and hazard-free environment at all times. Cats are territorial so become very attached to their home and environment, If you are going away, try to find

someone to care for your cat at home. If boarding, ease the move by taking familiar items along, e.g. your cat’s bed/toys. Make sure cat carriers feel secure in transport, and introductions to new surroundings are gradual. Putting familiar smelling items in carriers and new environments can help them feel more comfortable.

Getting your cat used to a carrier

REWARD BEHAVIOUR

Extra tip: Make the area around you fun and rewarding so that your dog enjoys being closer to you. Lots of encouragement through praise and treats will stop him racing towards his destination

C

ATS are territorial animals and become very attached to places. They are naturally frightened of unfamiliar places and smells and prefer to stay in their familiar home. However, there are occasions when a cat has to be transported, e.g. when taken for vet appointments, which should be done in a secure cat carrier. If a cat is

used to his/ her carrier, this will minimise stress of such events. Getting your cat used to a cat carrier should be a gradual process, preferably

from a young age. By taking small and gradual steps and ensuring that it is a positive experience, it is possible to get your cat used to a cat carrier. It is recommended that the carrier is left out in your house at all times, in a place that your cat likes to use. This will help in that that your cat may

become to not only associate the carrier with going to the vet. Placing familiar sme-lling items in the carrier can aid the process of getting your cat used to the cat carrier and make them feel more secure when being transported. Positive reward-based training methods, such as ‘clicker training’, can be used to train cats to perform certain types of behaviour and can be useful in setting up signals to encourage your cat into their cat carrier if this is a problem. Punishment techniques, such as shouting, must never be used. If you are inexpe-rienced in cat-training techniques, learn how to teach more basic commands first (such as encouraging your cat to come when called and rewarding them with a healthy treat) and see whether your cat responds to this positively, before attempting more complex activities. Again, consulting a clinical behaviourist is recommended for training your cat effectively.

The story of animals surviving one of the harshest seasonal changes on the planet continues. It is summer and the Yellowstone beavers have a new challenge. Will the young survive as the river dries up and the colony is forced to move home? As food becomes scarce, wolves have a surprising strategy to keep their pups fed and grizzly bears are unexpected visitors on a cowboy ranch. By midsummer, the hot dry conditions create a new danger - deadly wildfires burn out of control and threaten to engulf a family of great grey owls. 18:15 19:00 20:00 21:00 22:00 22:45 03:30

Tom and Danielle Raffield’s lifelong passion is steam-bending wood into extraordinary curvy shapes. They’ve spent much of their working lives using the technique to make furniture and lighting. Desperate to escape their tiny gamekeeper’s lodge, they’ve decided to build a spectacular wavy wooden house in south Cornwall, with curvy cladding, twisty furniture, and interior walls covered with naturally weathered timber. With only a £100k budget to play with, they decide to do a lot of the building themselves. But have they taken on too much? 18:30 19:00

FREE EVENTS

Discover the environment of La Concert of Laguna with new programme classical music

L

A Laguna is promoting environmental awareness with a new programme of excursions and workshops.

Councillor for the environment, Zebenzuí González said the events were directed

at all members of the public and were free of charge. It is a varied agenda, which

includes excursions through natural sites of the municipality, volunteer activities and different workshops. The programme begins on January 28th with a walk in the Cañada Verde, a natural path in the process of recovery. The proposal has the particularity that it will have a bilingual guide service, in Spanish and English, thus opening the way for both tourists and citizens interested in practising English. This is an interesting opportunity to learn about the natural environment of our municipality while improving our skills in English,” said Sr. González. The following event will be held during the month of March in Tejina. There, in its citizen

centre and surrounding areas, a workshop will be held on invasive species (day 18); weed clearance of the “rabo de gato” (day 19); a workshop of houses for birds and insects with recycled materials (day 24) and an excursion (day 25). In April, also in Tejina, there will be a route by the Jóver coast (day 22) and a new recycling workshop (day 23). This set of activities will close on June 10th with a cleaning day off the coast of Punta del Hidalgo, a date similar to what has been done on other occasions, but with a greater focus on environmental education. The registration for all the events is already open and can be formalised through the web tivity.es.

S

ALVE Regina” is the title of a concert of classical music that takes place on Thursday, February 2nd at 6.30pm in the church San Fernando Rey in the village of Santiago del Teide.

Barbara Hebborn (soprano and recorder) and Hans Peter Reiners (organ) will perform music by various composers from four centuries such as F. Veracini, G.B. Pergolesi, L.N. Clerambault, V. Bellini, G. Puccini and F. Mendelssohn-Bartholdy and others. The date of the concert coincides with the feast of Candlemas, hence the “Salve Regina” theme was chosen. The medieval text inspired the famous composers, above mentioned, to write beautiful pieces of music. Admission for the concert is free.

Jazz Corner welcomes top musicians as new season begins

T

HE Jazz Corner of the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium has reignited its popular neon light that will shine between the months of January and June on six occasions. Gran Canaria will again welcome the best jazz musicians, with a perfect combination of local and international talent. The Albert Vila Quartet, BlueInGreen, Carmen Souza Trio, Huntertones, The Rossy Vibes Quintet with Joshua Redman and Chicuelo-Mezquida star in the Rincón del Jazz programme. This edition offers for the first time subscriptions and though it is no longer possible to snap up the bargain for all six (the first concert is on January 14th), 70 euros will still buy fans tickets for five concerts or four concerts for 55 euros. The ticket can be purchased at the ticket offices of the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium and the Teatro Pérez Galdós. On February 18th, at 9pm, the Jazz Corner will have a Canarian flavour with the BlueInGreen lineup, which

will present its new work, which will be recorded in the Auditorium coinciding with the performance. BlueInGreen is the latest project offered by the Tenerife saxophonist Morgan Hernández. This initially emerged as a quartet with drummer Freddy Sánchez, bassist José Carlos Cejudo and guitarist Luis Merino. Currently the band has incorporated the pianist Miky Delgado and the percussionists Víctor Galván and Óscar López, thus expanding their palette of colours and sonorities. The serene voice of Carmen Souza will fill the Sala Jerónimo Saavedra on March 24th at 9pm. She will be accompanied on stage by Theo Pascal, on bass guitar and bass, and Elias Kacomanolis, on drums. Carmen Souza is difficult to describe, because she recalls Nina Simone and also Billy Holliday, Sarah Vaughan and

Carmen MacRae. There’s also something from Joni Mitchell and Ricki Lee Jones. This young singer born in Lisbon and with Cape Verdean parents has assimilated and transformed these and other influences and has boosted them with her own vocabular y. The result is a voice rich in nuances, calm, sometimes very sensual, sometimes spontaneous, casual and fun. Souza is known as the Ella Fitzgerald of Cape Verde. The band Huntertones will offer a concert on April 7th at 9pm. The American lineup is composed of Dan White, saxophone; Jon Lampley, trumpet and sousaphone; Chris Ott, trombone and beatbox; Josh Hill, guitar; Adam DeAscentis, bas; and John Hubbel, drums. The Huntertones sound is a perfect blend of inspired improvisation and adventurous compositions that blend jazz, funk, soul, hip-hop, R & B and rock. On May 18, at 9:00 pm, The Rossy Vibes Quintet

features Joshua Redman will take the stage at the Jazz Corner. The lineup is headed by the Catalan musician Jorge Rossy on the vibraphone, accompanied by four music giants: saxophonist Joshua Redman, guitarist Jaume Llombart and bassist Doug Weiss. To the powerful mix must be added to the

legendar y dr ummer Al Foster, the only musician who played in the band of Miles Davis before and after the retirement of the mythical trumpeter. Marco Mezquida and Juan Gómez ‘Chicuelo’ team up on June 2nd, two musicians who sound and breathe in a language called art, talking from keys and strings. The quality of the artists who have risen and will rise to the stage of the Jazz Corner has made this cycle a meeting point for all lovers of jazz and reference for

professionals. It is the most sophisticated jazz club in the city where the public can have a drink listening to the best music. The tickets and subscriptions for these concerts can be purchased Monday through Friday at the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium, from 16:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., at the Pérez Galdós Theater box office, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. 00 hours, and until a few minutes before the start of the show at the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium; As well as on the websites www.auditorioteatrolaspalmasgc.es, w w w. a u d i t o r i o - a l f r e d o kraus.com and www.entradas.com and on the telephone 902 488 488.

La Orotava carnival summed up by cobbles of colour “Cobbles of brightness and colour” will sum up La Orotava’s 2017 Carnival

T

HE fun-packed programme takes place from February 25th to March 4th and the annual poster already chosen reflects this theme. It is the work of the graphic designer and photographer Damián Rodríguez Álvarez.

Damián Rodríguez describes the poster as a work based on digital illustration with a human figure representing all the carnival groups, the musicians, the entities, the associations and the people in general who make a party that is clearly popular. The figure is apparently female but nothing can be assumed in Carnival, says its author. “It is simply a person who represents all the people who go out to enjoy their streets in a good way,” he added. On the other hand, he stressed that the colours that make up the pavement highlight a very special feature of the Carnival of the Villa, which makes it unique. “The surroundings of the celebration: an old town that vibrates at the same time as the villeros, children, young and old, who with every step, every dance, every disguise and every smile fill with colour the old cobblestones on which the Carnival acts,” he said. The carnival will feature many novelties, as well as the traditional features like the Coso, the burning of Crispin and the traditional Piñata dance in San Juan. The Commission will meet again shortly to complete details of the programming. “Always making decisions together and considered of interest to enrich and improve the carnival offer for all audiences,” says the councillor of fiestas, Delia Escobar.

Child restraint systems

Jag’s up to Pace with new SUV

C

HILDREN grow at an alarming fast rate, which means that their height and weight varies quickly. This is turn means that the car restraint system in which they may be travelling can become too small for them to travel safely and comfortably. Children require a restraint system that adjusts to their age, height and weight so that they are always protected, which means using different types of child restraint systems as they grow. The differences in the types of restraint systems are characterized into groups in accordance with international homologation rules. Always try to place the restraint system in the rear middle seat where possible as this reduces the risk of injury in a side impact. Having the child in the correct restraint system reduces by 75% the risk of death in a road traffic accident and also reduces the risk of injury by 90%. We will endeavour to explain the different groups of child restraint systems over the next few issues, and give you the information about each group and its characteristics so that your little ones always travel with the maximum safety. Please note we will also explain about the new I-size restraint systems, however this law is due to be modified again some time later on this year.

Group 0 (from 0 to 10 kilos) up to approximately 1 year of age. A carrycot specifically designed for new-borns and babies up to 10 kilos. This type of restraint system must be fitted in the rear seat of the car and in a transversal position across the rear seat with the baby’s head towards the inside of the car. These types of restraint systems are never recommended apart from in exceptional circumstances.

I-size restraint system (45-75 cm) up until approximately 1 year of age. This is a system which complies with the new rulings with an ISOFIX connection for babies with a height of 45 to 75 cm. The carrycot comes with a 5-point harness to provide the maximum protection and is fitted in a rear facing position, in either the front or back seat, in the front seat ONLY if the passenger’s airbag is disconnected or if there is not one present in that particular type of vehicle.

Group 0 and 0+ (from 0 to 13 kilos) This is a system that allow the baby to be carried in either the rear or the front seat of the car, in the front seat ONLY if the passengers air bag is disconnected or if the car doesnot have one. The restraint system is always fitted in a rear facing position. The system protects the baby via a 5-point harness fitted to the restraint system, which is then anchored to the car, either by the vehicles 3point seat belt or via an ISOFIX anchor. The restraint system would be changed to the next group when the baby’s head comes out of the restraint system or when the child weighs 13 kilos.

T was new territory for Jaguar but the company’s first venture into the SUV market has been a resounding success.

And once you’ve driven the all-new F-Pace you will understand why it’s been receiving numerous global awards. This performance SUV went on sale in April last year and has already become the fastest-selling Jaguar ever, already attracting more than 46,000 buyers. The newcomer hasn’t gone unnoticed in Scotland where it was voted top SUV and was just edged out for the Scottish Car of the Year award back in November. The F-Pace has collected more than 25 global awards and has just been named Best Large Crossover in the UK Car of the Year Awards – putting it in the mix for the UK Car of theYear to be announced later this month. It comes with a choice of six power trains – from a

four-cylinder 2.0-litre Ingenium diesel to a 3.0-litre 380PS supercharged petrol V6 engine taken from the FType. My latest drive was in an R-Sport model AWD with the 180PS diesel engine under the bonnet. It might be the least powerful engine featured in the F-Pace but it offered plenty of punch when required, as well as achieving 129g/km efficiency. This is a big car but it powers to 60mph in just 8.2 seconds and has a top speed of 129mph. And it is great to drive, being surprisingly agile on some twisting roads. You can go into bends at speed and there’s super grip with this all-wheel drive model. With its quick and accu-

rate steering it really is hard to believe you’re sitting behind the wheel of a large SUV when you’re thrashing along country roads. The F-Pace would also be ideal for long journeys as it cruises along ever so smoothly and quietly sitting at motorway speeds. The eight-speed automatic gearbox was also quick to respond when need although you have the choice of making manual changes with the steering wheel paddles. Fuel economy figures are impressive at 45.6mpg urban, 60.1mpg extra urban and 53.3mpg combined. The R-Sport test model looked sporty with an aggressive touch, especially front on with its bold grille and muscular bonnet. You get typical Jaguar quality and luxury finish in the F-Pace’s spacious interior. Even back passengers in this five-seater enjoy luxuries

This system again complies with the security standards expressed in the isize law which came into effect in 2013. They are used for children up to a maximum height of 105 cm, they are always fitted to the ISOFIX anchorage points, each restraint system comes with its own 5-point security harness which allows the maximum anchorage to the rear of the seat.

such as heated, electricallyreclining seats. There’s lots of head, elbow and knee room and also a huge boot at 650 litres, expanding to 1,740 litres if you drop the 40.20.40 split rear seats. Standard features on all specs are far too extensive to list here but cutting-edge

technologies include InCon-tol Touch Pro infotainment system and 12.3-inch HD virtual instrument cluster. It has all the latest safety features and ever y day driving aids that include cruise control with auto speed limiter, lane departure warning, traffic sign recognition, front and rear parking sensors

A great part of the fun of wining and dining in Tenerife is finding somewhere different and it’s well worth a trip out to Santa Ursula to the warm and inviting Donde Mario. Though from the outside you might easily pass by it, the inside is elegant and captivating. Restaurateur Mario Torres surpises us every day with his extensive use of produce in season, and his unbeatable experience with wines and cookery. Just try his Cherne warm salad, a super-healthy Canarian fish soup, or his Lomo de Vaca Morucha. You will be surprised.

Set in a series of old Canary houses, this restaurant is made up of a labyrinth of inter-connecting rooms leading off from the bar area in the centre. The atmosphere is reminiscent of an English country pub with its low ceilings with wooden beams and warm décor. The food is fundamentally Canarian. They grow most of their own produce at their allotment and only use olive oil to cook with. Their ethos is a simple one, only use the best, fresh produce and cook it with thought and care. The menu is described as Picoteo, slightly more than tapas without reaching the full-blown three-course meal status. It’s delicious and affordable.

Restaurante Magnolia has come a long way, starting life as a small intimate restaurant with an outdoor terrace to the finished article we see today, with the terrace now covered and well spaced tables inside. The kitchen is open plan and creates the most wonderful national and international dishes with an extensive menu of fish, shellfish, lamb, steaks, pastas. This venue is always busy and customers are full of praise for the Restaurante Magnolia as one of the finest places to eat on the island. What painkillers can I take?

T

HE type of medicines that you need to treat your pain depend on what type of pain you have.

For pain associated with inflammation, such as back pain or headaches, paracetamol and anti-inflammatory painkillers work best. If the pain is caused by sensitive or damaged nerves, as is the case with shingles or sciatica, it is usually treated with tablets that change the way the central nervous system works. The aim of taking medication is to improve your quality of life. All painkillers have potential side effects, so you need to weigh up the advantages of taking them against the disadvantages. Paracetamol is used to treat headaches and most non-nerve pains. Two 500mg tablets of paracetamol up to four times a day is a safe dose for adults. Side effects are not common and this dose can be taken regularly for long periods. Overdosing on paracetamol can cause serious side effects, however, so don’t be tempted to increase the dose if your pain is severe. If the pain lasts for more than

three days, see your GP.

Ibuprofen So-called non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, diclofenac and naproxen, seem to work better when there is clear evidence of an inflammatory cause, such as arthritis or an injury. They should not be used for long periods unless you have discussed it with your doctor. If you take them for long periods, there’s an increased risk of stomach upset, including bleeding, and kidney and heart problems. Don’t take more than the recommended dose, as this will increase the risk of serious side effects.

Aspirin Aspirin is another type of NSAID. It produces the same kind of side effects as other NSAIDs, but is not as effective as a painkiller, which means it’s not usually prescribed for pain. It is dangerous for children under 16.

Codeine Codeine doesn’t work ver y well on its own. It works better when combined with paracetamol in a single pill. You can buy co-codamol (paracetamol and lowdose codeine) over the counter. Higher-dose codeine has to be prescribed. Codeine and other medium-strength prescribed painkillers can cause dependency, which means that when you stop taking them you may feel unwell for a short period. If you need more and more of these drugs, contact your GP or other healthcare professional for advice.

Soluble painkillers Effervescent painkillers are high in salt, containing up to 1g per tablet. Too much salt can raise your blood pressure, which puts you at increased risk of health problems such as heart disease and stroke. You may want to consider switching to a non-effervescent painkiller, especially if you’ve been advised to watch or reduce your salt

intake.

Amitriptyline and gabapentin Amitriptyline is a drug for depression and gabapentin is a drug for epilepsy. Each of these medicines can also be used to treat pain caused by nerve sensitivity or nerve damage, such as shingles, diabetes nerve pain and sciatica. You don’t have to have depression or epilepsy for these tablets to help your nerve pain. Amitriptyline and gabapentin both have to be prescribed by a GP. Side effects include drowsiness and dizziness.

Morphine

Morphine and morphine-like drugs (such as oxycodone, fentanyl and buprenorphine) are the strongest painkillers there are. Some come as a patch, but they all work in similar ways and should only be used for severe pain. They will only be prescribed after consultation with your GP or a pain specialist. The dose and your response will be closely monitored. These drugs should only be used as part of a longterm plan to manage your pain.

UNIT COUNT

How long does alcohol stay in your blood?

O

N average, it takes about one hour for your body to break down one unit of alcohol.

However, this can var y, depending on your weight, whether you’re male or female, your age, how quickly or slowly your body turns food into energy (your metabolism), how much food

you have eaten, the type and strength of the alcohol and/or whether you’re taking medication and, if so, what type. It can also take longer if your liver isn’t working normally.

How much is one unit?

One unit is equivalent to 10ml or 8g of pure alcohol. There are roughly: 2.1 units in a standard GLASS (175ml) of averagestrength wine (12%) Three units in a large glass (250ml) of averagestrength wine (12%) Two units in a pint of lowstrength lager, beer or cider (3.6%) Three units in a pint of higher-strength lager, beer or cider (5.2%) One unit in a single measure of spirits (25ml)

Adding up your units If you drink a large

(250ml) glass of wine, your body takes about three hours to break down the alcohol. If you drink one pint of beer, your body takes about two hours to break it down. One pint of strong lager is equivalent to three units, so this will take longer. However, this time can vary, depending on the factors mentioned above. If you have a few drinks during a night out, it can take many hours for the alcohol to leave your body. The alcohol could still be in your blood the next day. This means that if you drive the day after an evening of drinking, you could be over the legal alcohol limit.

The strange phenomenon of phantom smells

P

HANTOSMIA is the medical term for an imaginary odour (phantom smell). It is also known as an “olfactory hallucina-

tion”.

The smell is unique to the person and is usually unpleasant, spoiling the taste of any food or drink consumed. It can be in one or both nostrils. Most phantom smells go away in time and are not caused by anything serious. But if the problem persists and you’re worried, see your GP. There are a wide range of possible causes of phantosmia, which include: Nasal infection – some people start to perceive a smell after they develop an infection that affects their nose or sinuses (read about sinusitis). The smell may become noticeable after a sudden change in airflow through their nose – for example, just after they’ve sneezed. It usually goes away when the infection clears. Nasal polyps, which are abnormal tissue growths that form inside the nasal passages and sinuses (read more about nasal polyps). Migraine with aura – some people smell phantom odours just before or during a migraine (read more about migraines) Other possible causes are dental problems, smoking, exposure to certain chemicals such as insecticides or solvents, radiation for treatment of head and neck cancer and neurological (nervous system) conditions. Less commonly, the cause of phantosmia is either nerve cells sending abnormal smell signals to the brain, or a problem with the brain itself.

How is it diagnosed?

Your GP will want to know if the problem is definitely with your sense of smell, and not with your sense of taste (it’s easy to confuse these). They will also want to determine whether the smell is perceived, as in phantosmia, or actually real – you might be giving off and detecting a body odour, for example. You’ll have a head and neck examination, to see if there is any obvious problem such as something in your nasal passages. The GP will want to know if the smell transmits through one nostril or both. You may be referred to an ear, nose and throat specialist for further tests, which may include a nasal endoscopy, where a fine, flexible tube with a tiny camera at the end is inserted up through your nose and images are viewed on a television screen or an MRI scan or CT scan of your brain and nasal cavities, to rule out tumours, infections or obstructions

How is phantosmia treated?

Some people with phantosmia will find that the smell gradually fades over a few months, and no treatment is needed. If it is caused by an illness such as sinusitis, it should go when you recover from the illness.

T should not be overlooked that oral diseases can affect different organs of our body.

In particular, the most well-founded are cases of periodontitis, that is, inflammation of the ligaments and bones that support the teeth, according to the definition of the National Library of Medicine (NIH). This is associated with the risk of cancer, diabetes and even dementia, but above all,

cardiovascular disease. Recently, a study published in the Journal of Dental Research and led by researchers at the Helsinki University Hospital brings new evidence of the association between heart disease and oral problems. “The prevalence of ischemic heart disease is up to

2.7 times higher in patients requiring endodontics than in those who do not need this treatment,” said John Liljestrand, the lead author of the study. According to the newspaper ABC, this group of researchers used a sample of more than 500 patients with a mean of 62 years and coronary symptoms: 36% of the participants had stable ischemic heart disease, 33%

fulfilled the criteria for the diagnosis of acute coronary syndrome, and the remaining 31% showed the initial signs of developing ischemic heart disease. All of them had an orthopantomography or “panoramic radiology” of the jaw and the dental pieces. The result left no doubt, “58% had one or more inflammatory lesions that could be treated with an endodontic

procedure,” reports the ABC. Ruth Pérez Alfayate, an endodontist at the Artedental Clinic and doctor cum laude at the Universidad Europea de Madrid, as well as a professor and researcher at the same institution, explains that endodontics is a simple treatment that can prevent much more serious problems than those caused by a simple cavity or trauma. This technique is also known among popular jargon as “nerve-killing”, although it is really about saving the teeth at risk of being withdrawn. “It is a common treatment that we practise almost daily in Artedental, with ver y positive results,” explains the doctor. It is practised in those cases where the dental pulp, the innermost part of the tooth and formed by soft tissues between which are the nerves and blood vessels, becomes inflamed and infected due to cavities, trauma or wear and tear between the teeth, among

others. The technique consists of extracting the pulp, disinfecting the cavity, filling it again and sealing it, to eliminate the focus of the infection and avoid what is called “dental abscess”, with ver y serious consequences ranging from tooth loss to Infection of other areas of the body causing brain abscess, inflammation of the heart or pneumonia. For Dr. Pérez Alafayate, the evidence of the association between cardiovascular diseases and dental infections is becoming an irrefutable fact. “It is critical that everyone complies with their dental reviews, especially among the elderly population. Sensing a problem that requires endodontics can save a lot of problems for people whose functions and organs do not have the same strength as when they were young. The greater the number of studies, the greater the evidence that good oral health plays in favor of our coronary health. “

La Laguna sports court improved

L

A Laguna has completed the improvement of the sports court of Jardina.

The facility has been extended, accessibility improved, repaving and installation of basket and goalposts. Local councillor Agustín Hernández has visited the facilities and stressed that “it is a historical demand of the neighbours that is already a reality,” This work has entailed an investment of just over 16,664 euros. Meantime, the resurfacing of the Camino Vereda del Llano is about to conclude, with only the horizontal signage pending. La Laguna council has allocated an investment of about 31,000 euros to adapt the road between Las Mercedes and Jardina, where it is also intended to place speed reducers.

OUNGSTERS in El Fraile have given the thumbs-up to a “magnificent” new artificial turf at the Dionisio González football field.

The 150,000 euro project has been carried out by Arona council as part of its rolling programme to improve sports facilities in the municipality. The mayor, Jose Julian Mena accompanied by the councillors of sports and works, Juan Sebastián Roque and Jose Luis Gomez and the president of the local soccer club U.D. Ibarra Gaspar Martín Hernández, visited the remodelled facilities. The work consisted of the replacement of artificial turf, homologation and various maintenance work. It was carried out during the festive period so as not to interfere with the sports activity of the venue. Players, managers, relatives and residents agreed that the field of play had a magnificent appearance and that the new surface met the expectations marked before the beginning of the work.

S

ANTA Cruz city council, through the Foundation Santa Cruz Sostenible, recently presented proceeds from the entry fees from the Anaga Solidarity Trail to the AMIGOS Foundation of Vitolo. The Mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, thanked the work done by the football

organisation to collaborate on certain projects related to children’s diseases and delivered 1,070 euros to the midfielder of Club Deportivo Tenerife. The event was held at the council headquarters and also attended by the councillor for the environment, Carlos Correa, and the manager of the Santa Cruz Sustainable Foundation, Pedro Millán. The Anaga Solidarity Trail was held on December 31th, its fifth edition. This is a mountain race, over a distance of approximately 16 kilometres, in which participants make a climb to the Pico del Inglés from the facilities of the Insular Centre for Marine Sports of Tenerife (Cidemat), located in Valleseco, to return again to the point of departure, going down the other slope after crowning that point of the Anaga massif. To participate in it, it is essential to donate a toy and all of them were destined to the minors that are in the centers of welcome of Santa Cruz. The money of the registration, with a cost of 3 euros, ALSO goes to a charitable project.

Soccer Organisers reveal new-look tournament Ultra Trail of the Northeast helps Kiara L A Laguna is launching the second edition of the Ultra Trail of the Northeast (UTN), an ultra-distance mountain race that will take place on August 12th, starting from Punta del Hidalgo to Tejina.

U

D Chío has given a cheque for €1,785.50 to the family of Kiara, a Guia de Isora youngster who suffers from a disease that limits her mobility and has undergone several surgical interventions. Most of this money was collected in the charity meeting organised by the club with U.D Granadilla Tenerife Egatesa last April in Guía de Isora and with some later contributions. Javier Dominguez, president of the club, wanted to thank the solidarity of all people and especially the U.D Granadilla Tenerife Egatesa. “Thanks to the proceeds, it has been possible that Kiara also has a new electric chair and a bed,” he said. The mother of the young

woman, María Candelaria Domínguez, also showed her gratitude and that of Kiara, who she said “is becoming more excited and hopeful about her recovery.” The event was attended by Bruno Domínguez, councillor for Municipal Works and Services; finance councillor, Carmen Alicia González; councillor for Social Services, Cathaysa Vargas; Juan Ramón García (Fillo), sports director of the team, in addition to the people already mentioned and the father of Kiara Martín.

These are hamlets of the Anaga Rural Park, declared a Biosphere Reserve by Unesco; in fact, more than 99 per cent of the course of the test takes place inside this protected natural space. It is a test that is configured as one of the most attractive races on the current regional scene, given its extraordinary level of difficulty. Compared to other major ultra-distant tests - such as the TenerifeBlue Trial, Trans-canaria or Transvulcania- its participants verifiy that it has been by far the most demanding in terms of the uphill slope. The presentation was given by the Mayor of La Laguna, José Alberto Díaz, who was accompanied by the insular Ccuncillor for sports, María del Cristo Pérez; councillor for sports, Agustín Hernández, along with the director of the Ultra Trail of the Northeast, Jose Ignacio Delgado, and the technical advisor of the event, Jose Antonio de Pablo, known as Depa. Both José Alberto Díaz and María del Cristo Pérez have highlighted the double aspect of the test, which on the one

BIRTHDAY SURPRISE

ENTENARIAN Emiliana Matute is a very special lady who just loves her soccer!

She found herself guest of honour, together with family and friends, as she turned 100 recently. The sprightly grandmother was joined by relatives and representatives of Granadilla council and the women’s soccer team before the fixture with Santa Teresa. Emiliana, who was joined by her two daughters and the Mayor, José Domingo Regalado, received a special shirt made in her honour and was invited to blow the candles out on her birthday cake. Also present were councillor of the Third Age Sara Cano and club president Sergio Batista amongst others. It was an extra special day for Emiliana, because her team also won 1-0!

hand highlights the values of a unique scenario, which is a focus of tourist attraction, and on the other, the harshness of a test that already has followers throughout Europe. The 2017 edition consists of four lines of action: the readjustment of the kilometres and the modalities; increase the number of participants; intensify, even more, the commitment to the economic and social integration of the test in its environment; and expand the geographical scope of the test. Without losing its toughness, the identity signal of UTN, organisers have opted for a test more compact but also more authentic. That is to say somewhat shorter but also purer routes, further away from the urban fabric. The Ultra test goes from 93 to 78 kilometres, although maintaining its double competition: individual and by teams. A new categor y of Half

Marathon is created with 25 kilometres of route. The Half Kilometre Vertical becomes nocturnal, since it will begin a few minutes after sunset. In the first edition of the test, there were nearly 500 participants, but by 2017 a maximum of 850 places will be offered. It should be noted, however, that this number corresponds to the sum of the two different days: on Thursday, August 10th for the Vertical Half Kilometre (maximum 200 ) and on Saturday, August 12th for the Ultra, Ultra Teams And Half Marathon (maximum 650). It is considered that the UTN is a project shared with the hamlets of Anaga and the

northeastern region of Tenerife. In fact, one of the successes of the Ultra Trail of the Northeast 2016 was to test the involvement of residents in the volunteer work, provisioning, signalling, assistance to runners, etc. On this occasion the event will coincide with one of the most important festivals in the region, the Fiestas de Tejina. Organisers once again expect a good participation of athletes of the rest of Canaries and the national and international geography. The last edition was attended by Miguel Heras, Spanish champion Ultra Trail 2015. Entries are already available at www.ultranordeste.com.

Renting in Spain: Non-Resident landlord´s rental allowances Regular legal-contributor Raymundo Larraín Nesbitt explains the tax allowances that non-resident landlords may now benefit from following a recent European Court of Justice ruling.

F

OLLOWING a recent European Court of Justice ruling, non-resident landlords may now benefit from the same tax allowances that were previously earmarked for Spanish residents. This will greatly mitigate your tax bill on renting out your Spanish property. You can read a long unabridged article on the matter here which explains the changes in more detail, or else continue reading for the short version.

What is required by a non-resident landlord to deduct Spanish rental expenses? Currently only residents in the EU or EEA qualify to benefit from these allowances. You will need to produce a certificate of tax residency in the corresponding State issued by the tax authorities of that State which will be required on filing the tax return. Proof must be supplied that the following (deductible) expenses are directly related to rental income earned in Spain and have a direct economic connection that is inseparable from the activity carried out in Spain. List of expenses that can be deducted from your rental income This is a closed list. In addition to the allowances listed below some regions in Spain may offer additional rental deductions. Interests arising from a loan to buy the property (i.e. mortgage loan). Local taxes and administrative charges and surcharges that impact on the rental income or else on the property itself (i.e. IBI tax, SUMA tax, rubbish collection tax). Expenses arising from formalising rental contracts such as lets or sublets (i.e. Notary and/or Land Registry fees); legal defence (i.e. hiring a lawyer for tenant eviction purposes).

Maintenance costs may be offset; refurbishment expenses are excluded. Examples of maintenance costs (deductible): repainting over flaky paint, plumbing, debugging, tennis court green mold cleaning, swimming pool pump replacement, annual lift maintenance, leaking faucet. Examples of refurbishment expenses (non-deductible): glass curtains, double-glazed windows, parquet, marble floor, extension to property (outbuilding), tennis court, swimming pool, private lift. Notwithstanding the above, refurbishment expenses may be claimed on selling the property by offsetting them against your Capital Gains Tax liability. Please read my article: Taxes on Selling Spanish Property. Home insurance premiums (theft, fire, civil liability etc.). Please read my articles Home Insurance in Spain, Community of Owners’ Insurance Policies and How to Cancel your Home Insurance Policy in Spain. However claims arising from events that diminish the value of a dwelling are non-deductible i.e. fire. Utility invoices (electricity, water, gas and landline). Concierge, gardening & security services (i.e. gated communities). Rental publicity expenses. Home depreciation and amortization. The calculation is 3% on the highest value of the following two: home buying costs or cadastral value; the value of the land is excluded. By Raymundo Larraín Nesbitt Lawyer
