TENERIFE COUNTS THE COST OF EXTREME WEATHER

Photos : Moises Pérez (San Telmo, Puerto de la Cruz)

T

ENERIFE was one of the islands left counting the cost of extreme weather conditions which hit the Canaries over the weekend, causing extensive damage. One of the most serious incidents saw massive waves of more than 18ft smash into tower blocks in Tacoronte, bringing balconies crashing down and forcing the evacuation of 67 flats. One man, described as “foreign”, was knocked into the ocean off a jetty in Puerto de la Cruz. He was rescued and is recovering in hospital from leg and head injuries. Tacoronte council in Tenerife said: “The strong maritime storm that hit the north coast of Tenerife from Saturday has caused significant damage to some infrastructures, premises and houses of Tacoronte, forcing the eviction of the residents of several floors in the Mar y Sol building, in Mesa de Mar. In total, and for security reasons, access to 67 homes in this building has been limited, some of which have been badly damaged by the impact

of the waves, as well as common and local areas of this building. Specifically, three floors have been evicted from tower A of the aforementioned building and five floors of tower B.” The residents were put up in temporary accommodation under the municipality ’s emergency plan. Architects are assessing the damage caused to the flats and the cost of cleaning and repair work. Another coastal town in the north of Tenerife, Garachico was also hit by huge waves and 39 people were also evacuated from two seafront buildings last night when water severely damaged balconies. There were no injuries. South Tenerife was also affected, including one incident when waves broke the window of a hotel restaurant in Costa Adeje

where several people were dining. They were evacuated. Two cars were also washed

into the sea and a boat in trouble in Palm Mar had to be escorted to safety.

GARACHICO MARINE WALK “DEVASTATED”

T

HE lovely and historic town of Garachico is putting the damage caused by storm “Carlos” at millions of euros,

Many businesses along the Maritime Avenue were hit by the waves, adding to the toll of the 39 people who had to be evacuated from two buildings in the area. The municipality was badly punished by the passage of the tail of the storm Carlos, a front that brought with it rains that in some points of the archipelago saw more than 40 litres per square metre, in addition to winds of more than 100 kilometres an hour and

waves up to six metres high. There was also damage in Tacoronte and La Laguna .

Garachico Garachico woke up to a scene of devastation on Sunday morning, with stones all along the marine walk, fences brought down and damage to properties, including restaurants, bars and coffee shops. Even the anchor of the castle was dragged along by the force of

the sea. Older local residents said the storm was even worse than the one recorded in 1987. Most of the damage is along the stretch between San Miguel Castle and the soccer field.

Rambo wins hearts in Tenerife during blockbuster filming

T

OUGH action guy Sylvester Stallone has been winning hearts in Tenerife as he films his latest blockbuster, supposedly set in Mexico.

The famous actor is showing his soft side with waves and smiles to fans who have been watching scenes unfold in various locations across the island, including El Rosario, Puerto de la Cruz and the capital, Santa Cruz where traffic changes are currently in force. Stallone had always said “no” to a sequel to the Rocky series but finally changed his mind and agreed to star in “Rocky V”. All the locations are thrilled at having been chosen as it means considerable revenue and publicity, together with work for associated services, extras, etc. The value to the island is put at millions. The Mayor of Puerto de la Cruz, Lope Afonso said: “Hosting the filming of another feature is of great importance for the international promotion

of the city as an enclave for cinematographic blockbusters of any kind”. The filming of “Rambo V” in Santa Cruz involves a series of changes in traffic management into December The areas affected by this shoot will be the district of Cepsa, the upper part of Ifara, Somosierra, the slope of Taco belonging to the municipality of Santa Cruz, the lower area of La Salud and

Barrio Nuevo. In recent months, those responsible for this multinational production have held various meetings to agree on the necessary traffic modifications to carry out their work in the capital. The first deputy mayor and councillor for Citizen and Road Safety, Zaida González, said: “The important coordination work has been carried out with

RONA has incorporated six new adapted taxis that reinforce the accessibility of the service in the municipality.

The Mayor, José Julián Mena, accompanied by the councillor in charge of transport, Leopoldo Díaz Oda, together with the president of the association Radio Taxi Arona, Pedro Manuel Luis Hernández, met with the new licensees of vehicles adapted to people with functional diversity. Arona has made accessibility in recent years one of the keys of the local council’s work, obtaining numerous prizes of national and international character in this matter. “The incorporation of new adapted taxis will allow us to give a better service to the users of this type of transport that have functional diversity,” said a council spokesman.

HE Mayor of La Laguna, José Alberto Díaz has announced the rehabilitation of the Convent of Santo Domingo, one of the heritage landmarks of the city, will be guaranteed financing and the works could begin during 2019 thanks to the grant of 1.3 million euros included in the General State Budget for this financial year of 2018. From the Town Hall, the necessar y steps are being carried out to complete the financing through the Government of the Canary Islands, and obtain the remaining 600,000 euros that would complete the total budget of the works, amounting to 1.9 million euros.

Paraglider hits trees in park

A

paraglider was injured after colliding with trees in Tenerife.

The accident happened in the Parque de las Nieves in Adeje in the early afternoon. The Canary Emergency Service, firefighters, Civil Guard and police all attended after a call was made to the 112 centre reporting that a paraglider had crashed in the park and hit trees. The man was treated at the scene for “moderate” injuries before being taken to hospital for further treatment.

Sr. Díaz said the rehabilitation of the Convent of Santo Domingo will be a “jump of quality” for La Laguna as a World Heritage City. “We can look to the future without forgetting the past,” he said. The ancient Convent of Santo Domingo, founded in the 16th century, was the place around which this urban sector was organised at the entrance to the city, next to the old road to Santa Cruz. The interventions in the 19th century detracted much of the convent house, which has been restored in its different phases by the Insular Town Hall. Currently, the building houses the offices of Culture, Tourism, and Economy, Employment and Business, as well as various spaces for cultural activities, such as exhibition halls, concerts and conferences.

Digging into the past in Santa Cruz

DEFENSIVE JEWEL

S

ANTA Cruz city council has started a survey and archaeological analysis of the San Francisco batter y in order to evaluate the current state of the fortress in view of its future rehabilitation.

The works, commissioned by the company Patrimonia Arqueología S.L, began with the cleaning of the walls and the manual search of buried structures. The first lieutenant mayor, Zaida González and councillor of historical heritage, Yolanda Moliné, visited the works in the company of the official chronicler of the municipality, José Manuel Ledesma, the archaeologist responsible for them, Artemi Alejandro, and Emilio Abad Ripoll , from the Tertulia Amigos del 25 de Julio. Sr. Gonzalez framed the action in the restoration programme for the historical heritage of the city and, specifically, the military, so that the values hidden by the fortification can be determined and “afterwards to be exalted for the enjoyment of all the residents.” Yolanda Moliné said the procedure prior to the study has been hard but had been worthwhile “because we are faced with a jewel of the defensive heritage of the city”. Santa Cruz has an important display of defensive architecture, such as castles, batteries, watchtowers and bunkers, which are a fundamental part of its history. The Battery of San Francisco is a magnificent example of this architecture and has belonged to the defensive system of the city since the last third of the 18th century. The circumstance was that it was in service during the historic defence of the city against the attack of the English fleet under the command of Rear Admiral Horacio Nelson. It is located on the shoreline of the city in an urban environment .

RALLYING CALL

ARONA CONTEST

Hotel chambermaids pledge to continue fight for better conditions

Students raise awareness of the coast and recycling

A

RONA council’s environment department, together with the Clece company, has launched the second edition of the “My school recycles” contest.

Students from the 12 CEIPs of the municipality learn to separate waste and facilitate the recycling, an initiative in which the previous course involved 5,233 students, who collected more than 30 tons of plastic containers, bricks, cans and cork. The educational centres that collect the most waste for recycling will receive cash prizes that will be used to buy materials, games and books. The students, in addition, must in this second edition elaborate a mascot with recycled material and residents of Arona will be able to vote, throughout the month of February, on the videos of awareness on the need to preserve the coast and the oceans made by students of fifth and sixth forms. The videos, whose theme will have to be focused on both recycling and preserving the seas, will allow the winners to enjoy a whale watching activity.

The Mayor of Arona, José Julián Mena, recalled that “the first edition of My School recycles was a resounding success, not only because of the enormous participation it had on the part of the students, who were very proactive, but because it generated an awareness of double direction, which is what we wanted. While the children were learning and becoming aware, they brought that awareness to their homes. And that involvement of their families was crucial for the results we obtained.” Sr. Mena stressed that “from the government group we said that environmental sustainability was going to be one of the keys of this mandate and we have fulfilled it with activities like this, which involve more than 5,000 students in activities related to recycling , with the importance of training and raising awareness of who the citizens of tomorrow are.”

possible today without you. We are born of precariousness but if we continue it is by force of people. It may seem that today we have not achieved anything visible, we continue with the same work overload, yes, three occupational diseases have been approved but we have to continue fighting them in the courts. It is a long-term job but there are many groups of entrepreneurs who get in touch with the associations to see what they can do to improve the situation of women. At this point we have to be humble and share spaces. You have to always join. If I continue here it is for all the women who are behind us. “ Estefanía Castro said: “It is not accidental that the first congress in Spain is held in Adeje, it is not accidental, but due to the important commitment that this council and its mayor have always had with the most vulnerable. This space does not intend to create a confrontation but to work from the conciliation as the founder has already said. The situation of chambermaids has been outrageous but thanks to the creation of the Kellys it has been possible to make them visible. “ José Miguel Rodríguez

Fraga welcomed all the women who attended the congress from many places in the country and recognised their role in the construction of the society “working women who for a long time have contributed in a sacrificed, silent and invisible way to create what tourism is today in Spain. Sometimes we forget that building a country goes through a lot of people who are ver y important, not just intellectuals or entrepreneurs. “ The Kellys Association has expressed through its manifesto a series of demands ranging from the refusal to outsource the service to avoiding salary differences and exploitation and for that purpose they request to amend article 42 of the Workers’ Statute (on outsourcing of works and services). Other demands focus on the prevention of labour risks, conduct studies to evaluate work and workloads and adapt them to reality. Likewise, they demand clarity about the agreements that are adopted regarding occupational diseases. Finally, they also request better pensions and the recognition of laborious work considering that it is a physical job.

Mayor of the municipality, Pedro Martín, said the good water management “is not only to guarantee the supply or respond in a short period of time to any fault, it means above all not losing water either through an inefficient network or the distance between the galleries and the population centres.”

The Mayor, Francisco Linares recently held a working meeting with the subdelegate of the government in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Javier Plata, to discuss various topics of interest to the municipality. Also at the meeting, which took place at the headquarters of the subdelegation itself, was the Lieutenant Colonel responsible for the Civil Guard Command in the province, José María Tienda Serrano, and councillor for security, Narciso Pérez. Civil Guard, with a ver y important collaboration and coordination of the Local Police, is key to making La Orotava a safe town and providing the necessar y tranquility for our residents,” he said. “That’s why we are interested in collaborating so that they have a new, more extensive facility and allow them to carry out their work more comfortably.”

Sr. Pérez explained that the proposed plot is adjacent to the current quartering covering almost 3,000 square metres and that it would meet the needs programme proposed by the command for future installations. The La Orotava Civil Guard Post is the largest area on the island, incorporating the Teide National Park, making its facilities a strategic point of security.

Santa Ursula restaurant shines in top gastronomic awards L

Trio arrested during night-time burglary POLICE CHASE attempt

P

OLICE have arrested three men suspected of carrying out a string of robberies in commercial establishments in north Tenerife.

They are aged 24, 28 and 34, all from Santa Cruz. An investigation began in October after police detected an increase in robberies with force in commercial establishments (travel agency, architecture studio, grocery store, mobile phone store, auto school, animal shop, bars and cafes, among others) all committed with the same modus operandi. Thanks to the efforts carried out during the investigation, officers surprised at night and in fraganti the three defendants while they were trying

to force the grating of a restaurant in La Victoria, for which they used gloves and covered their faces with handkerchiefs or hoods to avoid being identified. The suspects ran away on foot through a pedestrian street of the municipality, until they were picked up by a vehicle occupied by a third person. The car was immediately stopped but during the arrests, one of the officers was attacked. The robberies were carried out in Santa Úrsula, La Matanza and La Victoria de Acentejo.

These awards are the oldest in Spain in terms of distinctions handed out by a media communication and officially recognise professional excellence, creativity, effort, talent, innovation and sustainability in the world of gastronomy. “El Calderito de la Abuela” won the “Special Dorada Award” in this 35th edition. The official awards ceremony will take place on November 26th at the Paraninfo of the University of La Laguna. Canary restaurant and best foreign cuisine. “These awards, the oldest in Spain awarded by a communication entity, have valued the great transformation experienced by the gastronomy of the islands in the last three decades and has been recognised beyond our borders. Today, gastronomy is not only a third of the gross domestic product, but is itself a tourist claim, the main economic engine of our archipelago,” a spokesman explained. The restaurant “El Calderito de la Abuela” in Santa Ursula is spectacular in more ways than one. Perched on its incredible vantage point overlooking the

valley and ocean below, it serves wonderful cuisine and wine and this is a place you just have to visit if you want to sample all that is best on Tenerife. Santa Ursula is in the north of the island but is still very accessible. Travel along the TF5 and turn off at Cuesta de la Villa, then take a right turn on to the old road. You will find the restaurant about 300 metres on the right. “El Calderito de la Abuela”

is based on strong family traditions stretching back 80 years, as well as culinar y treasures. The restaurant’s charm is unique and homely and it is proud to have a history of almost four generations of restaurateurs. The restaurant combines traditional Canary cuisine with modern creativity, producing dishes which are great in flavour. You can savour various textures and flavours with produce and wine from the region.

UERTO de la Cruz council has begun works to improve the asphalt of different roads located in the San Nicolás Urbanisation.

A

RONA council is pressing for a new bus station in Los Cristianos to replace the present set-up and improve mobility.

Los Cristianos is the communication hub for the south which is why the local council is asking Tenerife Cabildo to replace it with a modern station, capable of absorbing the demand of public transport generated in the locality. The council also wants to see services adapted in terms of schedules and frequencies, as demanded by residents. Lines to be improved include the 480, 420, 471, 415 or 470, which benefit nuclei such as the centre, Valle San Lorenzo, El Fraile, Guaza and Guargacho. “These increases in schedules and frequencies are framed in a process that benefits the whole region, and especially the current stops in Los Cristianos, which has become small, not only for a town with the number of inhabitants of the municipality, but because it has become the main communication node of public transport by highway of the south,” said a council

spokesman. “This is why we are asking the Cabildo for the construction of a station in conditions that will absorb the demand and help improve mobility and traffic queues in the aforementioned locality.” The present site is used by thousands of daily users, including residents of Arona, workers from other areas and tourists, making it one of the most important on the island, after Santa Cruz and La Laguna, as explained by the councillor of the municipal area of transport, Leopoldo Díaz Oda. “The need for a station in conditions and with parking spaces is more urgent than ever, so that we offer facilities with modern services and adequate for the volume of passengers.” The council says a new site will probably be needed with a different access to alleviatge traffic jams, as well as circulation itself within Los Cristianos.

Specifically, the routes of action are the streets Julio Romero de Torres, Dalí, Goya and Zuloaga, with the aim of making these roads passable. The budget amounts to 42,752.27 euros, coming entirely from the municipal budget. The Mayor, Lope Afonso said: “This is another example of the commitment that this council has with the citizens, renewing important transit routes for our residents.” He said the payment of the municipality’s debt had made work like this possible and promised there would be more similar projects to come. “Many of the roads of the municipality will receive municipal investment for improvement and in this way, we will be able to return the quality to the urban environment of our districts and urbanisations.” The repairs were due to be completed last week. In this way and after a long time of waiting, “the residents of this Urbanisation will be able to access their homes through some transitable and renewed roads, and we hope to conclude with the asphalting

of all the roads of the Urbanisation in Februar y 2019,” stressed the councillor for general services, Angel Montañés, who insisted that progress will continue in the commitment of the current government team, “to return to normal the infrastructure of the peripheral areas of the municipality,.” The Mayor also announced that he will act in other urbanisations and important areas of the municipality such as “those already planned in La Paz, Las Aguilas, Gua-

cimara, El Taoro and El Casco.” Likewise, the General Services, Works and Industry department is also involved in the bidding process of the works destined to restore the roadway of three of its roads with the greatest transit of vehicles: Avda. Canar y Archipelago, Francisco Afonso Ave. Calle Luis Rodríguez Figueroa. Each one of the roads has been proposed to contract as an independent lot, thus complying with the principle included in the new

Law on Public Sector Contracts. As improvements in the specifications, it is planned to act, in a complementar y manner, on the small roads adjacent to those already mentioned. The estimated value of the contract is 1,142,289.30 euros, divided into three lots, and the maximum term to be executed is 56 days. The potential bidders have already submitted their proposals, on November 1st, and at this moment the hiring table is analysing the bids submitted.

During this week there will be a meeting with students from the borough’s secondary schools (3rd year), on giving the young people the necessary tools to detect and combat abusive behaviour. On Friday November 23rd at midday the institutional manifesto will be read followed by a minute’s silence on the steps of the Town

The penalty was imposed by the Provincial Court of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, together with an order to pay 1,440 euros, for an offence of theft with violence and illegal detention. The events took place on the night of August 29th, 2017 when, along with three other people who have not yet been identified, the man agreed to go to a mall located in Costa del Silencio and attacked the guard. He was tied up by the feet and hands with flanges and American tape, a state in which the concierge stayed until he was discovered and released at 6am in the morning by a cleaning worker. The defendant went to the premises dedicated to the sale of alcohol and tobacco and with a forceful instrument

forced the entrance door, breaking the padlocks. He then entered the warehouse, lifted the safe, valued at 1,500 euros, and took it outside the building. The owners of the premises said it contained 140,000 euros although this was not confirmed. The identification of the culprit was based on the remains of blood found in the reservoir where the safe and car were found. The defendant said the blood found on the premises was because he had a fight with his girlfriend in the same area and had thrown his mohile phone against the wall of the business. The girl verified this story and could be prosecued for false testimony.

CASCADE OF POPPIES

All Saints Church, Puerto de la Cruz

I

T was a privilege to officiate at our annual Remembrance Sunday service, particularly since this year it fell on Armistice Day itself. At the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month we remembered those events of exactly 100 years ago. The church was full and it was also a joy to welcome both a representative from the Ayuntamiento of Puerto de la Cruz and my pastor colleagues from the German Lutheran church. As usual, we had flags hanging from the chancel roof. The highlight for me, though, was the cascade of poppies that were draped down the side of the pulpit. There were something like 300 of them, all knitted by church members. As we all know, British Legion poppies are a symbol of the flowers that grew in the fields of Flanders. But this cascade of poppies is a living symbol: there are more of them this year than there were last year, and next year there will be more again. They are a fitting memory of what happened in the past and a pointer to our ever-growing hope for peace in the future. Now our thoughts begin to

turn to Advent and Christmas. On Thursday 6 December, a national holiday, we will be marking St Nicholas’ Day at Haus Michael (C./Las Arenas 42). This will be a chance not only to explore the continental tradition associated with this special saint, but also to introduce the fairly recent English tradition of christingles. Christingles are oranges circled with red ribbon, and with a candle stuck in the top, together with sweets on sticks. If you want to know what these all mean, then come and join us there at 3.00 pm. Advance notice of our Carol Service: Friday 21 December at 6.00 pm. The midnight service on Christmas Eve begins at 11.30 pm and there is just one service on Christmas Day, at 10.00 am. A reminder of our other service times: Sundays, 9.30

am (a quiet traditional service of Holy Communion) and 11.00 am (our main sung Communion service); Wednesdays, 10.00 am (Holy

Communion). Chaplain: The Revd Dr Paula Clifford Tel: 922 38 40 38; Email: paulaclifford4@gmail.com

HIGHER PRICES

TEN ARRESTS

Canaries need Canaries embroiled again in massive cocaine-smuggling plot more new homes to avoid T major deficit HE Civil Guard and the National Police have arrested ten narcotics traffickers in Alicante, Córdoba, Almería and Madrid.

T

HE Canary Islands are heading for a deficit of 140,000 homes in 2031, experts claim.

The construction sector has begun a modest recovery in the Canaries after the crash that led to the economic crisis. However, although the data is better than five years ago, it is still far from those recorded pre-recession and even at the beginning of the 1990s of the past century. The slow pace of construction causes a shortage of supply and demand that currently amounts to 40,000 homes and that by 2031, if the execution is accelerated, it can reach 140,000. This gap is the main cause of the rising prices that the real estate market has experienced in recent years and which particularly affects rental. The figures - and the conclusions drawn from them - are part of the study “Housing in the Canaries”, prepared by the consultora Corporación 5 and promoted by the DISA Foundation. The report puts at 1,100 the annual rate of construction of residential buildings, while noting that in order to achieve a balance between supply and demand in 2031 it should be 15,000. Correcting this gap in a shorter period - the year 2022 - would need about 22,000 homes each year. The shortage of supply is, according to the report, the central reason for the increase in prices. This does not imply that there are no other factors the vacation rental, among them - but the authors of the

report understand that they would not have the same effect if the real estate park were to meet the needs of the population. The report points to the difficulties related to the issueof licenses as the main factor that slows down the growth of housing construction. Although the holiday rental affects the rise in housing prices, its influence would not be so if the supply of houses were adjusted to the demand, according to the study.

They are part of a network accused of distributing in the southern half of Spain and the Canary Islands about 965 kilos of cocaine, valued at 26.05 million euros. The organisation, disarticulated in a joint operation of the Civil Guard, the National Police and the Tax Agency, had created a network of companies to whitewashmoney from drug trafficking, according to a statement from the Ministry of Interior. The ten arrested - nine Spaniards and a Colombian have been imprisoned for crimes against public health, money laundering, illicit possession of weapons and belonging to a criminal organisation. In addition, three other people have been investigated

for the same alleged crimes and have been released. In the operation ‘Alicafé I’, carried out in at least two stages and under the supervision of the Court of Instruction number 2 of Torrevieja (Alicante), 14 kilos of cocaine and ten kilos of marijuana have been seized. Also 1.6 kilos of hachis, 50 grams of amphetamines, more than 600,000 euros in cash, nine high-end vehicles, a pistol of a caliber of 9 millimetres with ammunition and various computer equipment were seized. The drug and seized effects have been valued at more than 1,700,000 euros. The operation began in September of 2017 after a tipoff over the shipment of a high quantity of cocaine through a

boat, catamaran type, that travelled from South America to Portugal. The destination of the narcotic substance, however, was Spain, specifically Torrevieja, from where the network distributed it throughout Levante, Andalusia, Madrid and the Canar y Islands. The narcotics traffickers had drug distributors spread

Top awards for Barceló hotels in the Canaries

N recent years, the Barceló Hotel Group has committed itself to consolidating its offer within the luxury segment, especially with the launch of the Royal Hideaway Hotels brand and the repositioning of the Barceló Hotels brand. Therefore, it is not surprising that more and more chain hotels are rewarded with awards such as the “Luxury Hotel Awards”, which recognise the most exclusive establishments in the world. The Royal Hideaway Corales Resort, a spectacular five star New Luxury Hotel in Costa Adeje (Tenerife), has been awarded the “Best New Luxury Hotel in Europe 2018”. In just ten months from its

The Barceló Teguise Beach (Lanzarote) has received the Best Hotel Award in the category of “2018 Europe Luxury Coast Resort”. This is not the first time that this hotel receives this recognition since last year it was chosen “Best luxury resort of Spain and southern coast of Europe” and “Best luxury resort with spa and thalassotherapy in Spain.” The awards ceremony was held in a gala in Bali (Indonesia).

The Barceló Hotel Group, the hotel division of Grupo Barceló, is the third largest in Spain and the 29th largest in the world. It currently has 249 urban and holiday hotels of 4 and 5 stars, and more than

RECHARGING POINTS

La Gomera praised for green efforts as electric vehicles encouraged in Canaries

T

HE Government of the Canary Islands will launch, as of 2019, a new line of aid aimed at promoting the introduction of the electric vehicle in the Canaries with the installation of recharging points. This was announced by the Minister of Economy, Industry, Commerce and Knowledge, Pedro Ortega, during the inauguration, together with the president of the Cabildo de La Gomera, Casimiro Curbelo, of the Encounter on Energy and Sustainable Transport, organised by both institutions in Agulo.

FALSE DOCUMENTS

Five arrested for sale of stolen copper wiring

During his speech, Pedro Ortega said: “The Canaries are at a particularly strategic moment in which the traditional energy model is slowly taking a much more sustainable model, based on the need to combat climate change and to better take advantage of the natural resources that exist in the islands and the potential we have to become a reference territory in the development of renewable energies.” In this context, he said that the island of La Gomera “is a magnificent example of the potential of the Canary Islands not only to become a 100% sustainable territory but also to consolidate as a natural laboratory for the trial and demonstration of pioneering projects in the field of the clean energies.” He recalled that the Ministry of Economy, Industry, Commerce and Knowledge of the Government of the Canary Islands and the Island Council are working on the development of the ‘La Gomera 100% Sustainable ‘project, which includes a first diagnosis of the La Gomera energy system with the aim of developing in a second phase a proposal that determines the technical and economic viability of a series of projects related to the impulse of the renewable ones, including the implantation of the electric car on the island, the implantation of microwaves and the habilitation of storage systems energetic Sr. Curbelo stressed the importance of the island hosting a meeting of this type for the first time, “since it represents an important step towards moving towards a sustainable energy model, which bets on green energy, the self-consumption, energy saving and efficiency measures, among others, and all of this, under the umbrella

of the aids and incentives of the competent administrations, something fundamental to promote these actions. “That’s why I appreciate the interest and collaboration of all the institutions, entities and companies involved in the organisation of this day,” he added. Sr. Curbelo recalled that with the recent approval of the Insular Plan for Sustainable Mobility, important projects will appear in this area, with the objective of reducing individual transport to the benefit of collective systems, as well as encouraging the use of electric vehicles. In this regard, he announced that the Cabildo is already working on replacing the combustion vehicles belonging to the insular iInstitution for electric vehicles with a heading that reaches 500,000 euros. Added to this is the creation of the insular network of recharging points for this type of vehicle, which is only awaiting the environmental impact report of the regional Government that confirms the implementation of this service. Pedro Ortega added that, in recent years, the Government of the Canaries has collaborated with the public institutions of La Gomera in the implementation of initiatives that have contributed to reducing energy consumption with energy saving and efficiency measures.

T

HE Civil Guard has arrested a total of five people, three in Gran Canaria and two in the province of Cádiz, suspected of different criminal acts related to counterfeiting documents used for the sale of copper. According to the Benemérita, the Roca Team of the Command of Las Palmas began an investigation in July and 1,111 kilograms of copper wiring have been recovered. In functions related to the control of copper material, they carried out several inspections and identified three apparently irregular sales of different types of material made by two people. After the inquiries, the agents found sufficient evidence of the use of manipulated sales authorisations by a

53 year old man in Cádiz and a relative living in the same area. It was discovered that the copper wiring material came from substations on the island of Tenerife, which are being refurbished, and that the person who delivered the material was a worker of an electrical installation company. In this way, he was left with the money from the sales from manipulated documents, thus incurring a crime of documentary falsification.

ANZAROTE and the Port Authority intends to connect the capital with the sea with two natural pools, a transit walkway and a recreational and nautical-sports leisure area in the port of Arrecife. The two natural swimming pools will include one adapted for people with reduced mobility and another with Olympic measurements for swimming,. President Pedro San Ginés said: “It is an open door from the city to the sea, with use and public access for the entire population and will be endowed with areas of recreation and sports with accessibility for all people, children , elderly, athletes and people with reduced mobility, with solarium and parking areas, among other services. “ The work is expected within two years and will embellish one of the entrance doors to Arrecife where more than 400,000 cruise passengers arrive. S r. Ginés described this project as “a dream for the city of Arrecife” and said it would be added to the other developments such as an urban park, Museum of the Sea and the research centre for marine

flora and fauna and cetaceans. “Lanzarote has spent many years working in the positioning of the island as a tourist destination and in that context, the Cabildo plans to carry out a global project of seven natural pools with Olympic dimensions for the seven municipalities,” he revealed. Financing must still be studied by the Cabildo but it is expected to be co-financed with part of the FDCAN Funds of the Government of the Canary Islands. The Olympic pool, for use by people with knowledge of average swimming, will have dimensions of 50 x 30 ml, with an area of 1,850 m2 of action surface. It will be accessed by a jetty from the solarium area to water level. The second pool will have dimensions of 50.50 ml x 47.50 ml, with an area of ??2,600 m2 of action surface.

Hiker injured in La Gomera

A

68-year-old woman had to be rescued after falling and injuring herself whilst out walking in La Gomera.

The accident happened in the mid-afternoon on the Laguna Grande road in Agulo. The woman suffered a moderate injury to a leg and was unable to continue. The Canary Emergency Service joined Civil Protection and the Civil Guard, as well as the Anaga emergency team, in the rescue. Once located, she was transferred to an ambulance and then on to hospital.

HE Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands has began vaccinations against influenza in all the health centres of the Canary Islands.

The objective is to reduce the incidence of this disease, its duration and the impact that it has each year has on the population. The vaccine is recommended for all people over 60, chronically ill of any age and their caregivers, pregnant women, health workers, and personnel from other professions who are also essential for the community, such as police officers and firefighters. In the present campaign, two vaccines will be used, a tetravalent aimed at all persons under 65 years of age included in the risk groups, and another adjuvanted trivalent directed at persons aged 65 years or older and an institutionalised population with a greater risk of associated complications. The General Directorate of Public Health has purchased for the campaign this year a total of 222,000 doses of influenza vaccine, for an amount of 1,117,860 euros: ie 147,200 doses of trivalent vaccine adjuvated for an amount of 690,360 euros, unit price per dose 4.69 euros and 75,000 doses of tetravalent vaccine for an amount of 427,500 euros, with a unit price of 5.70 euros per dose In the 2017-2018 season, 203,950 vaccines were administered to risk groups formed by people over 60, health workers and pregnant women, to which some 10,000 additional doses must be added to other risk groups. There was an increase of four per cent in the vaccines administered in that season compared to the previous one. The incidence of influenza in the 2017-2018 season was similar to that of the previous season in terms of rates per 100,000 inhabitants, and more vaccines were administered, especially in the group of people over 65 and pregnant women. The epidemic threshold of 115.65 cases per 10,000 inhabitants was exceeded in the second week of January 2018, and the epidemic peak was reached in the third week of that month with a rate of 231.08 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Prevention of influenza is based primarily on vaccination, which aims to reduce the mortality and morbidity associated with the flu and the impact of the disease in the community. Therefore, it is aimed primarily at protecting people who are at greater risk of having complications in the event of suffering from the flu, which can transmit the disease to others who are at high risk of complications and those who, due to their occupation, They provide essential services in the community. People belonging to a risk group may request an appointment to get vaccinated by calling the Citizen Information Service on telephone 012, 922239301 and 928219030 The protective immune response after vaccination is variable and, overall, it is placed in a range between 70 and 90 per cent of those vaccinated.

According to the project, the centre will have different levels, one of them for a large permanent exhibition centre and a large outdoor space as a place and open classroom for workshops, performances, and so on. The document also includes as singular elements several astronomical observatories buried with their respective domes, a planetarium and a platform for paragliding takeoff.

Six victims have so far been identified in Switzerland, Australia, Belgium and Sweden. The links were made through a well-known social network when a gang member pretended to strike up a relationship but once trust was gained, they asked for money. They also used the Nigerian card modality, which consists of sending letters indiscriminately, explaining to potential victims that to collect an inheritance from a distant relative they must transfer a sum of money. Twenty-six people have been arrested in Valencia, including the three ringleaders and 23 mules captured by the

organisation in order to open bank accounts or to receive transfers. In addition, a bank card counterfeiting laboratory has been located and 29,000 euros intervened in cash in four raids. The investigations began at the end of last year when the agents learned of a series of suspicious transactions thanks to the communication from the security department of a bank. This bank had observed international transfers that seemed suspicious from several countries such as the US, Switzerland, Sweden, Colombia and Finland, among others. Thanks to this information, the agents lo-

cated the first victims of an organisation specialised in scams. These lived in Sweden and Belgium and had been deceived following the modality of false romance. In March of this year, a third victim was located in Switzerland, also scammed by means of the false romance, after being caught and tricked through a social network and defrauded out of 140,000 euros. A few months later, new Australian and Swiss victims residing in their countries were detected, this time captured by the false inheritance modality. Later a new victim was located in Switzerland, deceived by a male, captured through another dating website. Police do not rule out the existence of new victims.

Spain’s tourism sector continues to create new jobs

A

LMOST 100,000 new jobs were created in the tourism sector during the third quarter when compared with the same period of 2017.

According to the Labour Force Survey, the tourism sector consisted of 3,032,805 active workers in the third quarter of 2018. This is 2.3% more than in the same period of the previous year. According to this survey, 2,759,330 people are in work associated with tourism activities (up 3.7% year-on-year). This represents an increase of 98,415 workers on the same quarter of the previous year. Spanish Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism, Reyes Maroto, welcomed these figures “as they confirm the strength of tourism in Spain. My ministerial department is working hard to strengthen Spain’s leadership in the tourism sector.” The number of workers rose in the hotel and catering industry and in other tourism activities, while it fell in passenger transport services. In this quarter, the Spanish economy has created some 478,000 additional jobs when compared with the same quarter of the previous year, of which 20.6% were the result of activities associated with tourism. Workers in the tourism sector accounted for 14.1% of all jobs in the Spanish economy. In the third quarter of 2018, both the number of salaried employees and self-employed workers rose in the tourism sector, by 3.8% and 3.5%, respectively. In this third quarter, an upward trend was posted in all autonomous regions except Aragon, Asturias, Castile-Leon, Catalonia and La Rioja.

Gang cloned credit cards in bid to scam five million euros

S

PANISH police have broken up a crime ring which cloned credit cards in a bid to withdraw up to five million euros from bank cash machines in a scam linked to the 9/11 attacks in New York. The suspected ringleader, a 49-year-old Algerian man. was arrested in his home and was found to be in possession of thousands of blank and completed fraudulent cards and cash machines. Officers also unearthed a mountain of wigs, caps and glasses he used to disguise himself in a bid to evade capture. Police say he led the counterfeiting organisation and had previously been convicted of financing the 9/11 attacks in New York using the same card counterfeiting procedure. The idea this time was to try and get five million euros from bank machines and commercial establishments but in the end, only 500,000 euros was netted.

As part of the police operation, 19 people were arrested in Madrid. “The modus operandi was to clone the bank cards by obtaining data in the darknet and then withdraw the money directly from ATMs or buy products in stores in bulk,” said a police spokesman. “The ringleader was in charge of obtaining the numbering of the bank cards cloned through skimming and carding. They obtained the necessary data to make the falsifications in the darknet and this information -number of cards and PIN- came from thousands of bank accounts of customers of Spanish credit institutions and also from other countries.”

LA MONCLOA

New website for Spanish Government brings major improvements

T

HE Government of Spain has launched a new design for its website and made it fully adaptive and responsive.

The new, more attractive and modern image adapts to all electronic devices and improves access to all content for anyone, especially the elderly and those with disability or limited ability due to certain circumstances. So far this year, the website at www.lamoncloa.gob.eshas received 5,058,895 visitors, 738,707 of which were in October. This complete and adaptive redesign means that content adapts to the device being used and its size, meaning that certain aspects are optimised for mobile, tablet and traditional computer screens. Changes have also been made to the font and size of the text in order to improve the reading experience. The new La

Moncloa website has smaller pages, which brings a substantial browsing improvement as it reduces page response and display times while

Dad dumped baby in bar

T

HE father of a 14-month-old baby was arrested after abandoning a child inside a bar for two hours.

Sevilla police had put out an urgent appeal on their Twitter site for anyone to come forward if they knew the little girl or her family after she was found in a pram in the bar. The child was taken into police care whilst efforts were made to find the father who had been left in charge of her. Later, as offers of support came flooding in, police revealed the child was fine and the mother had been contacted. However, it took them two hours to find the wayward father. It is being assumed that the father, aged 34, went to the pub for a drinking session and either forgot to collect the child or deliberately abandoned her.

optimising mobile telephony data use. The La Moncloa website already met the accessibility requirements for the websites of public administration services, with a score of 9.16 points. That score will be consolidated with this new design. Accessibility is an essential feature for guaranteeing the principle of equal opportunities, and is gradually becoming broadly recognised as an improvement in the quality of life for all. From a populational standpoint, accessibility is essential for 10%, necessary for 40% and comfortable for 100%. The La Moncloa website is available in Spanish and English, and some of its static content is also available in Catalan, Galician, Basque and Valencian. The website provides information on the government agenda, activity by

the President of the Government and the ministerial departments, and a summary on the Council of Ministers meeting; the latter and the home page being the most popular among visitors. A total of 1,645 press releases have been published on the website so far this year, 225 in October alone. The site, www.lamoncloa.gob.es offers the chance to receive a weekly news bulletin. This bulletin has more than 6,000 subscribers and also provides access from any part of the website to the various government social media profiles, such as @desdelamoncloa on Twitter, which offers useful information to the public such as the latest measures adopted by the Government of Spain, grants, subsidies or financial aid and other actions, recommendations and activities of general interest.

UK still leads the way in Man Spain with increase in tourist threatens to spending kill Prime N Minister FRANCO EXHUMATION

CANARIES POPULAR

EARLY 66.2 million inbound tourists visited Spain in the first nine months of the year, unchanged from the figure recorded in the same period in 2017, while the amount they spent rose by 2.5% to 71.77 billion euros.

A

man has been arrested for planning to assassinate Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez for wanting to exhume the body of dictator General Franco. Police were alerted after a user of a private chat on WhatsApp saw a posting requesting logistical support to commit the attack and to obtain the agenda of the president’s official acts and his specific location. Officials say the security of the Prime Minister was not compromised at any time. The man was arrested in Terrasa, a city in the east central region of Catalonia in the province of Barcelona. The detainee, who had no police history, is a member of an Olympic shooting club, and supposedly had knowledge to modify and even build weapons. The 63-year-old Spaniard wanted to kill Sanchez because he was furious at the prime minister’s move to exhume late dictator Francisco Franco from his high-profile resting place near Madrid, Mossos spokesman Albert Oliva told reporters. He owned “a total of 16 weapons,” he said.

These figures have been taken from the Inbound Tourism Survey (FRONTUR) and Tourist Spending Survey (EGATUR) drawn up by the Spanish National Statistics Institute. In September, a total of 8.9 million tourists visited Spain (up 0.5%) and spent 9.54 billion euros (up 0.7%). The average spend per day in September rose by 3% to 147 euros. The State Secretary for Tourism, Isabel Oliver, welcomed these figures because they show that “the stabilisation in tourism flows continues to be accompanied by significant growth in tourist spending, and that is the path to follow”. “These figures encourage us to keep working, harder and

faster, on maintaining Spain’s leadership as a global tourism powerhouse,” she added. In the first nine months of the year, the main emitting markets were the United Kingdom, with almost 15 million inbound tourists, France, with close on 9.43 million, and Germany, with almost 9.1 million. Significant increases were posted by the United States (up 8.7%), Portugal (up 8.6%) and Russia (up 5.3%). Again, Catalonia was the most popular region with more than 15.4 million inbound tourists, followed by the Balearic Islands, with just over 15.4 million, and the Canary Islands, with almost 10.1 million. The number of inbound tourists visiting all other regions rose in the first nine months of the year, particularly in the Region of

Madrid, which posted a figure in excess of five million, up 4.4% on the same period in 2017. The autonomous regions with the highest tourist spending figures to September were Catalonia (16.8 billion euros, up 1.2% on the same period in 2017), the Balearic Islands (13.11 billion euros, up 2.2%) and the Canary Islands (12.47 billion

euros, up 0.7%). It is also worth noting the spending increase in Andalusia (up 6.7% to more than 10 billion euros). In terms of emitting markets, the United Kingdom posted the highest accumulated spending figure so far this year with 14.62 billion euros (up 2%). This was followed by Germany, with 9.54 billion euros (down 3%), and France, with 6.2 billion euros (up 5.5%).

CIVIC BEHAVIOUR

Palma’s eight-hour ban on selling alcohol for street drinking

M

ALLORCA’S capital of Palma is to ban the sale of alcohol for drinking in the street between midnight and 8am in a further bid to crackdown on drunken tourism. The tough new stance will come into force in December and police will be given special powers to intervene, especially in the most popular tourist zones. Alcohol can only be sold from midnight for consumption inside bars, clubs or restaurants or on their terraces during pre-authorised opening hours. Palma council is going ahead with the crackdown on swigging from bottles on the streets after over-ruling local

objections to the new municipal regulations for the civic use of public spaces. Spokesperson for the government team, Susanna Moll said final approval would be given in December so it could become law before the end of the year. Police will pay special attention to a number of areas of Palma which have been designated as Zones of Special Tourist Interest where police will be allowed to act “with more forcefulness during

certain months”, according to councillor for public safety, Angélica Pastor. Fines of between 100 and 3,000 euros will also be dished out for “balconing”, the use of vehicles for the sale of food products and drinks on public roads, selling, advertising or promoting “laughing gas”; street selling either individually or in groups and the consumption of alcoholic beverages in the street by minors. The promotion and organisation of alcoholic excursions, pub crawling and party boats or disturbing pedestrians with scooters or other devices of personal mobility may also

be sanctioned by the Local Police. The performance of sexual acts which might be witnessed by children from the street, inside a dwelling or tourist accommodation may also be subject to punishment by the police, as well as performing a sexual act in the street in the presence of people who can verify it visually. The regulations also include the prohibition of unauthorised street vending of alcohol, as well as the performance of fraudulent activities such as street tricks and games. The proposals were initially suggested in July and have now been endorsed by the council.

Remembering British war dead R

ECENTLY we remembered those who gave their lives in the First World War. This article is about men who died in a battle long be-

fore.

During the Napoleonic Wars, when Spain was an ally of France and therefore an enemy of Britain, in the early hours of the morning of the 25th July 1797, combined British forces of about 1,200 seamen and marines under the command of our national hero, Rear Admiral Nelson, began its attack on what was originally thought would be a soft easy target, Santa Cruz, the main port of Tenerife and the Canary Islands. But the attack was a last fling, a fairly desperate attempt to take the city and thereby subdue the whole archipelago. The element of surprise had been lost three days before and the first attempt at landing had failed miserably. Now, in the darkest hours before dawn, the approach to shore of the British launches with their muffled oars and laden with armed men was seen by a woman on her way from San Andres to market in Santa Cruz. She alerted the guard at the nearest fort and the general alarm was raised. Soon afterwards the defenders of the seventeen forts and gun batteries of Santa Cruz, under the command of General Antonio Gutierrez, were ready and waiting. Everything that could go wrong for the British went wrong. A tremendous barrage of cannon fire such as the British had never experienced wreaked havoc among the launches. A strong tide that had not been reckoned with swept many of the launches to the south of the city, gunpowder got wet when the men landed and made firearms useless, and at least four men were drowned in trying to get through the surf. Nelson himself was in the first line of boats and, with his sword raised, he was about to step onto the beach where the Plaza de Espana is now, when he was shot in the elbow and had to be taken back to his flagship where the lower part of his arm was amputated. One of the British fleet, the cutter ‘Fox’ of fourteen guns, was carrying about 180 men (the exact number is uncertain) and supplies of munitions when it was holed below the waterline by a cannon shot. It sank instantly with the loss of her commander and 97 men. A full account of the attack has been written in Spanish and an English translation is awaiting publication. But to put it into a nutshell, the marines and sailors who landed were without their leader, the chain of command was broken at the top as captains and lieutenants

waited for Nelson’s orders that never came. Detachments of soldiers became lost and separated in the maze of dark city streets that the island militiamen knew like the back of their hand. After only a few hours the British, who had taken refuge in a convent, surrendered and after some negotiations General Gutierrez allowed them to return to their ships with their firearms, their flags and such dignity as they could muster. Later, when the reckoning was made and Nelson sent his report, signing it with his left hand, to his senior officer, Admiral Jervis, he found that 44 men had been killed in action (28 seamen and 16 marines), 105 men had been wounded (90 seamen and 15 marines), and 101 seamen and marines had been drowned or were missing, 97 in the sinking of the ‘Fox’ alone, making a total of 250 casualties in the aborted attempt to take Santa Cruz. After the attack and the British withdrawal five of the forts of Santa Cruz claimed credit for firing the cannon that sank the ‘Fox’. After examination the claims were narrowed down to three, which, after further examination of the various accounts, became one that was identified as the fort of San Miguel, near to the larger fort of Paso Alto. A dramatic model diorama in the Militar y Museum at the Almeyda in Santa Cruz reconstructs the action. Among several relics of the attack on display in the museum there is the flag of the British ship ‘Emerald’. It has to be said that the flag was not taken in battle, which would have been a great dishonour, but was lost from the ship and washed up onshore. Nelson was full of admiration for his nemesis; from on board his ship ‘Theseus’ he dictated; “And here it is right that I should notice the noble and generous conduct of Don Juan Antoine Gutierrez the Spanish governor; the moment the terms were agreed to, he directed our wounded to be received into the Hospitals, and all our people to be supplied with the best Provisions, that could be procured, and sent offers that the ships were at liberty to send on shore and purchase whatever refreshments they were on want during the time we might lay off the island.” The two commanders

exchanged gifts and expressions of goodwill and hoped to meet in person once the war was over, but neither man lived to see that day. In the lists of casualties, Nelson named the officers who were wounded: Rear Admiral Nelson, right arm shot off, Captain Thompson of the Leander, slightly wounded, Captain Freemantle of the Seahorse, shot in the arm, 3rd Lieutenant John Douglas, also of the Seahorse, shot in the hand, M. Waits, midshipman with the Zealous, wounded. And there were the names of officers who had been killed: Richard Bowen, Captain of the Terpsichore, Bowen’s First Lieutenant, George Thorpe, John Weatherhead, 5th Lieutenant of the Theseus (mortally wounded), William Earnshaw, 2nd Lieutenant of the Leander, Raby Robinson, Lieutenant of marines on board the Leander, Lieutenant Baisham, Lieutenant of marines on board the Emerald, and Lieutenant John Gibson, commander of the Fox cutter, who was drowned. But the ordinary seamen and marines who died were only a set of numbers in the records, and they still are at the time of writing. Research is happening in the Public Records Office in London on behalf of Spanish researchers, not, it has to be said, British. The place where the ‘Fox’ cutter sank with the loss of 98 men constitutes a war grave. The wreck lay probably in what is now the approach to the port of Santa Cruz. Surely, when and if their names become known, a memorial could be erected in Tenerife out of respect for all those who died, regar-

dless of rank. These men, so far as they knew, were fighting and dying for the honour of their country, as loyal soldiers always have done and always will do for

as long as there are wars. (This painting of the British landing at the pier at Santa Cruz is taken from ‘La Historia de 25 de Julio de

1797 a la luz de las Fuentes Documentales’, by Luis Cola Benitez and Daniel Garcia Pulido, from a painting by Gumersindo Robayana Lazo, c.1897.)

Enriching your pet’s life with indoor games

W

HEN the weather or your pet’s health prevents them from enjoying the outdoors, there are other great ways to keep them mentally stimulated.

Dogs: Playing with your dog a few times throughout the day can stop them from making up their own games, keeping their minds distracted from other possible destructive habits.

Puppy with treats Find it! How to play with treats: Show your dog that you have a piece of food/treat in your hand Say ‘find it!’ and then throw the treat across the floor When your dog finds the treat say a clear ‘yes!’ so they know they’ve followed through on the action that you wanted You can also play this game with toys if your dog is more toy orientated.

Cats: The key is not to play rough and tumble games with your cat as this can encourage your cat to grab and bite you. You can make your cat’s meal times more entertaining by using a food ball to provide mental stimulation. If you’re feeling experimental, why not train your cat to do tricks using a clicker? This is good fun for both of you and keeps your cat’s mind active. Be sure to keep the training light-hearted - never force them to do anything. Cats love to climb and a tiered scratching post is ideal for this purpose. This type of design helps cats to feel safe as it provides hiding places and a high shelf from which to watch the world go by.

Small pets:

When the weather starts to bite, you may think about moving your smallies inside to keep them warmer. There are lots of fun things you can do to enrich their living space during the colder spells. Encouraging your small pet’s natural behaviour by providing safe things for them to chew such as apple wood or willow is a wonderful way of enriching their living space. You can set up a cardboard box with an entrance and an exit that they can hop in and out of. Fill the box with shredded paper. Try hanging some root vegetables on a string for them to nibble.

Horses:

Ponies and horses love being outdoors where they are at liberty to display their natural traits and satisfy their curious minds. However, if your horse has to be stabled or placed in a restricted outdoor area for health reasons or particularly bad weather there are plenty of things you can do to keep them entertained.

Horses love play balls that they can kick around and pick up with their mouths to throw. This gives them an outlet for excess energy if they are in a playful mood. Giving your horse fruit and vegetables is a great way of enriching their environment; it can keep them entertained for

longer, especially if they are in stables. Scratching mats provide horses with the means to be able to safely reach that itch that they just can’t themselves. This reduces stress levels in an indoor environment and prevents damage to property at the same time!

Phantom pregnancies in dogs A

FTER every season or heat, there are hormonal changes which prepare a bitch’s body for pregnancy, even though they are not pregnant. This may be because naturally, dogs would live in groups and the more female dogs that can help with puppies the better. Some females are more affected by the hormones than others and these bitches may suffer symptoms.

How long will my dog’s phantom pregnancy last? This depends on the severity of the symptoms. A phantom pregnancy in a dog can last anywhere from a week to a month.

What are the symptoms of a phantom pregnancy? Signs that your dog may be experiencing a phantom pregnancy include: Lethargy

Depression and/or other behavioural changes Loss of appetitive Nesting – this can involve moving around and digging bedding Nursing – your dog may become particularly attached to a toy Secretion from mammary glands Swollen belly

What should I do if I suspect that my dog is having a phantom

pregnancy?

Take them to see your vet, who will be able to rule out a real pregnancy or any other medical conditions which can cause similar symptoms.

How is a phantom pregnancy in a dog treated?

Unless symptoms persist for a long period of time, treatment is not normally necessary and the phantom pregnancy will normally stop on its own. Milk will dry up more quickly if the

glands are not stroked or bathed. Long-term, neutering is recommended.

Can I prevent my dog from having a phantom pregnancy? Yes, by getting your dog neutered. In female dogs, this involves removing the uterus and ovaries. Not only does it prevent pregnancy, and false pregnancies, it also reduces the risk of breast cancers and eliminates the possibility of potentially-fatal infections of the womb.

Cuesta de la Villa

Cuesta de la Villa

A great part of the fun of wining and dining in Tenerife is finding somewhere different and it’s well worth a trip out to Santa Ursula to the warm and inviting Donde Mario. Though from the outside you might easily pass by it, the inside is elegant and captivating. Restaurateur Mario Torres surprises us every day with his extensive use of produce in season, and his unbeatable experience with wines and cookery. Just try his Cherne warm salad, a super-healthy Canarian fish soup, or his Lomo de Vaca Morucha. You will be captivated.

Set in a series of old Canary houses, this restaurant is made up of a labyrinth of inter-connecting rooms leading off from the bar area in the centre. The atmosphere is reminiscent of an English country pub with its low ceilings with wooden beams and warm décor. The food is fundamentally Canarian. They grow most of their own produce at their allotment and only use olive oil to cook with. Their ethos is a simple one, only use the best, fresh produce and cook it with thought and care. The menu is described as Picoteo, slightly more than tapas without reaching the full-blown three-course meal status. It is delicious and affordable. “La Bodeguita de Enfrente” won the “II Gastronomic Awards Cruzcampo Gran Reserva El Día-Mesa Abierta”, which took place last year.

Why not try a touch of “picoteo”, the Spanish-style of eating where, as the name suggests, you pick a selection of dishes and share with your companions. You will find “El Calderito de la Abuela” in Santa Úrsula and it offers a unique and homely atmosphere combining Canary cuisine with modern creativity. In 2016, “El Calderito de la Abuela” won the “Best Canarian Kitchen Restaurant Award” in the first edition of the “El Dia-Mesa Abierta” Awards on July 28th. The exterior of this property belies what you will find inside as it is full of charm and carácter and there is an incredible view of La Orotava valley. “A gem” is how it is described.

PUERTO DE LA CRUZ

Floral art course will culminate in cultural centre decoration

S

TUDENTS of a Christmas decoration workshop will transform the cultural centre of Los Cristianos this festive season.

Expert in Floral Art, Miguel Ángel Delgado is giving an intensive course in which students will learn different decorating techniques. Miguel was born in Buzanada and from a very young age, he became curious about the world of decoration. He soon began to exploit his artistic side in many corners of the Canary Islands. For five years, he worked for Arona council, in charge of organising events for older folk. With his art and originality, he has forged his professional career with which he made the leap to Barcelona . “I wanted to learn more, see new things, experience textures,” he says. His goal was to enter the School of Floral Art of Catalonia, a challenge he succeeded in.

L

From there, his career has exploded with many projects both in the national and European territory. He has been nominated as winner of the “Flower Cup of Barcelona” and has been part of the team of the florist master, Carles Jubany Fontanillas, champion of Spain in Floral Art. The artist says that this is his world: “ It is my life, it is everything. The possibility of creating and doing what one wants, what comes from the heart.”

Now his talent will be in Arona for a month, on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, from 5pm to 8pm until December 7th in a free workshop, organised by the Board. of Culture. A workshop in which, he explained, students will learn the different techniques to decorate: clay, wicker, natural plants or carpentry. But above all, they will participate in a larger project, in which they will prepare the entire set of the cultural centre of Los Cristianos for this Christmas.

AST weekend at Puerto de la Cruz (15-18/11), an international festival for percussionists was organised and named Festival Internacional de Percusión Ritmos Handmade (Juan Javier Rodríguez - Director and Yudi Acosta - Producer). With venues in Castillo San Felipe, Escuela Municipal de Música de Puerto de la Cruz, Hotel Marte and Playa Martiánez, these three days were drum heaven.

The event arrived to the streets of Puerto, thanks to the hard work and professionalism that the whole team put into it. OAL Universidad Popular Escuela de Música and Escuela Municipal de Música de Puerto de la Cruz brought together top professional musicians from the islands (Francisco Navarro), passing through Madrid (Jorge Perez - Patax) and as far away as Cuba (Nailé Sosa). The days were broken down into a Masterclass and a concert, plus a late night Jam Session and a morning Batucada by the beach. Even the sea was following the beat this weekend and although the weather did force some change of plans, it did leave a gap for the closing of the festival at Playa Matriánez. PREVENTING UPSETS

WATERING EYES

Looking after your digestion Tears without reason D IGESTIVE problems and stomach upsets can be prevented, relieved and even banished by simple lifestyle changes.

Beat stress

You may have noticed a feeling of unease in your stomach during times of stress. That’s because anxiety and worr y can upset the delicate balance of digestion. In some people, it slows down digestion, causing bloating, pain and constipation, while in others it speeds it up causing diarrhoea and frequent trips to the loo. Some people lose their appetite completely. Stress can also worsen digestive conditions like peptic ulcers (on the inside lining of the stomach or small intestine) and irritable bowel syndrome. One solution is to avoid eating when you’re feeling very anxious, stressed or unhappy. It also helps your digestion if you avoid arguing at the dinner table, as getting angry can put you off your food or make eating harder. Try to keep mealtimes happy and relaxed.

Stop smoking Smoking can weaken the muscle that controls the lower end of the oesophagus (gullet) and allow acid from the stomach to travel in the wrong direction back up the oesophagus, a process known as reflux. Reflux causes the symptoms of heartburn (a burning sensation in the chest) and can bring on or aggravate peptic ulcers and inflammatory conditions of the bowel. Smoking is also an important risk factor for stomach cancer.

Eat properly It is very easy to spend our working lives eating on the move or at our desks, gulping down food between meetings and then crashing out in front of the TV with a takeaway in the evenings. But eating this way can play havoc with our digestive system. Following some basic rules can prevent problems:

Don’t rush your food. Take the time to eat slowly. Try putting your fork down between bites and chew each mouthful well. Don’t overeat. Reduce the size of your portions at mealtimes, or try eating four to five small meals instead of three large ones. Eat regularly and try not to skip meals. Avoid eating a big meal just before you go to bed. Eat your last meal at least two to three hours before lying down. Make sure you have plenty to drink. Try to have at least one and a half litres (two and a half pints) of liquid a day.

Lose excess weight If you’re overweight, your tummy fat puts pressure on your stomach and can cause heartburn. Shedding some pounds may relieve digestive symptoms such as heartburn and other acidrelated stomach complaints.

Don’t binge drink Moderate drinking won’t hurt your digestive system but binge drinking increases acid production in your stomach and can cause heartburn and aggravate other digestive disorders. Binge drinking is defined as drinking eight or more units of alcohol in one session for men and drinking more than six units in one session for women.

E

VERYONE cries from time to time but watering eyes is when tears are produced without any obvious reason.

It is caused when tears don’t drain away properly (epiphora) or too many tears are produced (hypersecretion). Epiphora and hypersecretion can occur as a result of conditions such as conjunctivitis (eye inflammation), an eye injury or something irritating your eye, such as car fumes.

How tears work Tears are constantly produced to keep the eyes moist. They are produced in the small gland located above and outside each eye, called the lacrimal gland, and in the small cells found in the membrane that covers the eyeball (conjunctiva). When you blink, tears are spread over the front of your eyes. The tears drain away through tiny channels known as canaliculi, which are found on the inside of your eyes. They drain into a tear “sac” before flowing down a tube and into your nose.

Blocked tear duct If your ducts become blocked or narrowed, or if you have an eye infection, excess tears can build up. This causes the ducts to overflow, leading to a watering eye. If you have a blocked tear duct, your eye may water at least ten times a day. Who is affected by watering eyes? You can get watering eyes at any age but it is most common in young babies (0-12 months) and people over the age of 60. It can affect one or both eyes and can cause blurred vision, sore eyelid skin and sticky eyes.

Treatment Treatment isn’t always necessary for watering eyes and mild cases may not need treatment at all. It depends on how severe the problem is and what is causing it. For example, if you have a blocked tear duct, surgery may be required to unblock it.

Dental implants or endodontics? The valuation of the experts is fundamental O NE of the principles of dentistry consists, whenever possible, in conserving natural teeth. And it is that science, despite its longing to imitate or overcome nature, which has yet to invent a solution capable of improving the functionality and strength of healthy natural teeth. However, there are situations where there is no other remedy than extraction. When this happens, the best solution that exists so far is the placement of dental implants, as long as the conditions of the patient allow it. However, there are cases in which the diagnosis can generate controversy. When a tooth is fractured or has undergone a deep caries exposing the dentin, there is a treatment that seeks precisely to save the tooth: the endodontia, which consists in removing the pulp, the soft tissue that is inside the tooth and that includes the vessels and nerves; to later seal the ducts and rebuild the crown. This treatment, according to the Spanish Association of Endodontics (AEDE), “allows to maintain the natural dentition, the bone and the gum that surrounds it, as well as its functionality.” That is to say, to save the natural tooth. AEDE indicates that there are only three contraindications to save a tooth through endodontics: the presence of a vertical fracture, an unfavourable ratio between the crown and the root or insufficient periodontal support. “They are the only cases where the alternative to

endodontics should be valued,” says the Association. However, the percentage of success between an implant treatment or endodontics produces very similar results. According to a study published in the Dental Gazette, one of the most prestigious newspapers in the sector, “implantology has recently advanced with new designs and the success rate reaches up to 97% depending on the location of the dental bow and the density of the bone . Success means a strong integration of the implant into the bone. This success rate is similar to conventional endodontics, above 95%, and from eight to ten years and even 100%. Due to the implications of the removal of the tooth, there are therefore two very variable options in the treatment plan. “ In Artedental, a clinic specialising in dental implants in Puerto de la Cruz, it is clear that this is a complex decision, and for that reason they count on their equipment with two heavyweights of both disciplines. Víctor Cubillo, medical director of the clinic and implant specialist with a history of more than a decade; and Ruth Pérez Alfayate, Doctor Cum Laude in Dentistry and Professor of the Official

Master’s Degree in Advanced Endodontics at the European University of Madrid. Dr. Pérez Alfayate, who has just presented at the National Congress of Endodontics in Malaga, his paper “Root Reabsorption: Diagnosis, Classification and Treatment Options” with Montse Mercade, explains that the assessment of the experts is essential for each case. “The conditions of each

patient should be carefully evaluated to determine the best treatment. In Artedental we evaluate each case as a unique one, and the experts of each specialty we determine together what is the best solution considering the cost, the effectiveness and the long term result, “ he says. Dr. Cubillo, on his part, is aware of the value of maintaining the tooth, but also

of the exponential advancement of dental implants in recent decades. “Improving the quality of life of many patients thanks to the dental implants is impressive. There is no need to give a case for lost, and while the endodontia allows to maintain the natural tooth, for whom this treatment is not possible, there is a ver y similar solution regarding functionality and aesthetics that has come to

stay, “ he says. But we must not forget the most important question before a patient experiences any ailment, and it is prevention. “If you go to the dentist once a year, any problem can be detected early, avoiding for example, in the case of an advanced caries, endodontics or extraction,” concludes the medical director of Artedental.

SEA OF RUNNERS AND SPECTATORS

Spectacular performances in Santa Cruz international marathon T

HE International Marathon of Santa Cruz Naviera Armas was again a race of contrasts and emotions in this fifth edition, held on the asphalt of the capital of Tenerife. There was action and emotion, plus a few surprises. But the overall winner was the public who brought colour to the streets and encouraged all the runners during an event which is becoming of an increasingly high level. Veteran Miguel Ángel Vaquero was again one of the favourites. Based on the island for many years for work reasons, he headed the main group, taking advantage of the explosive exit of the runners of the Half Marathon with those who shared the starting pistol. He was controlling the distance but was closely

monitored by Pole Kamil Lesniak, Scot Denis Prikulis and local Huberney Jimenez. Halfway through the course, Vaquero was in the lead. Jimenez seemed to react and Lesniak and Prikulis maintained their rhythm, trying to shorten a distance that eventually became insurmountable. Vaquero came home as winner with a time of 2:35:35. Behind him, in a very short period of time, a surprising Lesniak came in, changing the mountains of Poland for the heat of Santa Cruz with very good results. Prikulis,

from the Vegan Runners, was third. “I’ve had to suffer a lot, this circuit gives you nothing and the rivals have been very strong. Thus, the triumph is much more commendable, “confessed Vaquero. Among the women, the strongest was Anna Wasik. The Polish competitor nearly went wrong during the second part of the race after having dominated with solvency from the beginning. She was close to leaving the race after taking a tremendous fall on the second course in the direction of San Andrés. However, she then recovered an acceptable rate and asserted the enormous advantage that led the front of the race to win the victory. Second was Pilar

A

RONA council is working on the reform of the Villa Isabel de El Fraile soccer field, while it has also put out to tender the integral reform of Dionisio González of the same locality, headquarters of UD Ibarra. Representing an investment of 1.1 million euros, it will allow this centre to have a renovated sports facility, the artificial turf having already been replaced, all in the framework of the #AronaAvanza programme. El Fraile will then have a soccer field with fully renovated facilities. The reform project includes both the improvement and expansion of changing rooms for equipment and storage space, as well as the gym, laundry, canteen and toilets, with the addition of an adapted bathroom.

The project also includes a new health care and massage room, as well the incorporation of solar panels and the renewal of the electrical installation. Once this reform is completed, the council will undertake other actions, such as the placement of seats and markers. The Mayor of Arona, José Julián Mena, explained that “the council of Arona, through the Board of Sports, has made a ver y important investment in the last three years in the modernisation of our facilities, since we are a

Mahamud, who made a remarkable race and finished ahead of Kamila Perucka, who completed the podium of the female Marathon. Wasik acknowledged that she had suffered “very badly” due to moisture and heat conditions and that only “the mental strength and thinking of the people that were waiting for me on the finish line” made it possible for a resurgence that allowed her to finish first.

Half Marathon municipality with a great sports base, but with infrastructures that had been becoming obsolete. We want to give impetus to this great sports base and that the teams and fans of Arona see real and tangible support from their council, investing in quality facilities. “ Sr. Mena has listed that “among these investments are

the replacement of artificial lawns, the installation of public address system and seats, reforms like this one or that of the Valle San Lorenzo football field, where we have also given a new impetus to the sports hall’s works. , as well as the blueprint for the Cabo Blanco sports centre, where we will continue working in the coming months “.

The intermediate distance was an alley of enormous dimensions, both between men and women. Laura Van den Beucken led from the beginning, without looking back. She finished in a time of 1h 21:34 and a substantial advantage over Lucy Bliddestone and Denise Robson, second and third respectively. Latvian Kitija Valtere finished fourth. “I was very keen to be able

to win here after several years trying it,” said the Bikila team athlete. Van den Beucken explained that running in Santa Cruz “is always hard, but I was doing good results and good results in Las Palmas and in Puerto de la Cruz and I felt very strong. I am more than happy about this result that, for me, is more than important. “ Among the men, the absolute dominator was the Latvian Dymitris Serjongis. Settled in Barcelona in recent times, the Baltic sportsman had shown his quality in tests developed on the peninsular and wanted to tr y Canary territory. The gap he opened up proved insurmountable. He also broke the record held by the Pole Maciek Miereczko, finishing in 1h 06:54, which will take a lot of beating in future editions. Behind, Hernandez took second place and kept it until he reached the goal ahead of Nour. Boys and girls also competed in the eight kilometres.

The SCOTY awards also produced double results for Ford and Kia. Ford’s new Focus took the Family Car title – 21 years after it lifted the overall title back in 1998. The company’s Ranger also took the Pick-Up title. The Kia Stinger took the Executive Car title while the talented Sportage which won the overall SCOTY award back in 2010 was voted Best Used Car on a good night for the Korean company. Hyundai’s Kona defeated stiff competition to take the Small Car title while the Peugeot 5008 took the Family Crossover Award. Vauxhall’s Insignia Country Tourer came out tops in the Four-Wheel-Drive category. The Estate Car title was

awarded to the Volvo V60 while Suzuki’s entertaining Swift Sport took the Hot Hatch title. The Sports Car title was won by the blistering BMW M5. Finally, Mazda took the Innovation and Technology award for their continued development of the internal combustion engine resulting in a new Spark Controlled Compression Ignition (SPCCI) system which delivers more power, better economy and a cleaner burn for lower emissions. Previous car of the year winners are: 1998 Ford Focus; 1999 Jaguar S-Type; 2000 Audi A2; 2001 Jaguar X-Type; 2002 Mazda6; 2003 Volvo XC90; 2004 Peugeot 407; 2005 BMW 3 Series; 2006 Jaguar XK; 2007

Ford Mondeo; 2008 Ford Fiesta; 2009 Land Rover Discovery 4; 2010 Kia Sportage; 2011 Range Rover Evoque; 2012 Dacia Duster; 2013 Volkswagen Golf; 2014 Hyundai i10; 2015 Vauxhall Astra; 2016 Volvo V90; 2017 Land Rover Discovery; 2018 Jaguar I-Pace. It’s hard to imagine that this was the 21st anniversary of the ASMW’s Scottish Car of the Year awards. I was president of the association when it kicked-off – handing over the first two awards to Ford Focus and Jaguar S-Type at events in Gleneagles Hotel. The latest award night marked my retirement from motoring journalism so this is my final News write-up – happy motoring!

was full of praise for the Jaguar I-Pace when I reviewed it in the Tenerife News back in August.

In fact it was so good that I said the SUV would be getting my Car of the Year vote unless something really exceptional arrived before the voting. Obviously fellow members of the Association of Scottish Motoring Writers were also impressed by Jaguar’s first allelectric vehicle as it was crowned top car of 2018 at a recent gala dinner. The I-Pace was named best in class in its Alternative Fuel category by ASMW members. And it then fought off competition from the other categories winners to lift the top award at Edinburgh’s Dalmahoy Hotel and Country Club. ASMW president John Murdoch presented the Car of the Year trophy to Rowdan Glover, managing director of Jaguar Land Rover UK, and

hailed the winning model. He said: The standard and variety of new models launched this year made judging difficult in all categories. “However, the moment ASMW members got behind the wheel of the I-Pace for the first time they were in no doubt that it was a special vehicle. “The most exciting Jaguar since the E-Type, the electric IPace fully deserves its Scottish Car of the Year crown. “It looks great, drives superbly and offers all the refinement and luxury you would expect from a Jaguar. “At the same time it is a great leap forward for the company and for electric cars in general. If this is the future bring it on!” Jaguar had another success at the awards with its E-Pace being voted Best Premium Crossover.

Parking lines and road markings in Spain

W

HILST Spain is within Europe, sometimes you may feel that their road signs, signals and road markings are not. We are going to simplify them. The main reason for road markings is usually to denote the separation of the sides of a road or changes in the type of road. They also provide drivers with information (when they are observed and acted on correctly) of any potential risks ahead or changes in the road.

manoeuvre does not impede other motorist and that you can carry the move out quickly and return safely to your lane in the shortest time possible considering speed limits. These lines are also used to indicate an approach to a dangerous or hazardous area or location. You may not have noticed, but in these circumstances the distance between the lines are somewhat shorter than the normal ones and are often slightly wider. They can also be used to indicate a special lane for certain vehicles i.e. Buses and in general these lines will be significantly wider.

Continuous White Line (or Solid white line as it is sometimes referred to as)

Double Solid White Lines

When you see this type of line in the middle of the road it means that you are not allowed to cross it, effectively in your mind you should be registering this as a wall that is not passable. A longitudinal mark consisting of two continuous white lines has the same meaning.... so far so good no surprises. Many people living in the south of the island will have noted (especially in the Las Chafiras Area) this type of line on the exit from the motorway and where you are not allowed to turn into another road by crossing over the line. There is one exception however ….... and that is in order to pass a cyclist, giving them the minimum distance and of course only when there is no oncoming traffic and it is safe to do so, common sense plays a huge part in the latter comment.

A Broken White Line

This is intended to basically be used as a guide to keep you on the correct side of the road but you are permitted to cross this type of line to pass vehicles or cyclist as long as your

These have the same purpose as a single one but denotes that traffic in both directions must not cross onto the other side of the road. As in the UK, if one side in certain places the line is broken, it denotes that traffic travelling in that direction can overtake, provided it is safe but not the traffic on the other side .

Stop Line A self-explanatory line, solid and usually accompanied by an octantal “Stop” sign or words written on the road. Vehicles must stop and give way to traffic on the main road or if at pedestrian

lights or crossing they must stop and adhere to the rules relating to the signs or signals. Please note that Motorcyclists and cyclists HAVE to put a foot down on the ground to indicate that they have stopped correctly. Police have been known to issue fines where there are stop signs, where no other traffic is around and a motorist has not actually stopped …... Christmas is coming so...

Give Way Line This is a broken line normally used where there is reduced or obstructed visibility and of course you must not cross until it is safe and clear. There are two types of give way lines or is thicker than the other so if you are at an intersection and there are two give ways and a stop the thinner give way has right of way first, then the other give way and then lastly the stop line.

Pedestrian Crossings This is of course a series of wide white lines arranged parallel to the axis of the road where drivers MUST allow pedestrians to cross These are just a few of the road markings but failing to adhere to them can result in pretty harsh fines. Safe motoring folks.
