All that is to say, TFN has grown. We’ve always been committed to creating innovative content, but we also wanted to intentionally create community. We hired an events director. We went apple picking, went on a bar crawl.
President/Editor-in-Chief Sidney Madden
To my knowledge, TFN remains the only fashion publication on campus that does everything in house, from facilitating our own shoots to designing our final magazine. We firmly believe inclusivity and creativity can not only co-exist but actually feed into each other. Looks are stronger when members feel comfortable enough to share clothes with each other. Shoots are more fun when friends are laughing in between shots.

Photography Director This issue showcases the work of photographers, Jessie Peng models, makeup artists, and stylists. Of writers and designers. Of our executive board. Of friends.
TFN friends and family, while looking through our fourth issue, please remember the village it took to put this magazine together and all the fun we had making it.

It’s a mid-November afternoon. Music is bumping in the two studios in the Art & Design building. Models pose against gel lights and tinsel backdrops, creating a moody nightclub scene. Their makeup, bold and glittery, is adorned with small gems around the eyes.
When the light catches a gem or hits the tinsel from a certain angle, the final images become out of focus, with glares in the corner. The photos capture the blurriness and effortlessness of celebrating the night and maybe not remembering it all.

These photos also show the hours spent creating looks with stylists and makeup artists. Commuting to thrift stores and locations. The hours spent editing the photos. And above all else, the trust built between models and photographers. Modeling takes a certain vulnerability, putting oneself in front of the camera, taking direction from photographers.
TFN models come from a variety of backgrounds, some having modeled professionally and others simply looking to build their confidence.

Written and designed by Caitlin Doyle. As a recent graduate from the University of Illinois, I am now living in Nashville, Tennessee, working as a photographer. When I was in school, I was studying advertising and art + design. While I learned a lot from these courses and they gave me a good basis of professionalism, they couldn’t ever give me the hands on experience I was desperately wanting. That was when I found The Fashion Network. In 2015, I joined the Fashion Network, which then it was a little different: lots of committees, a fashion show and a completely inexperienced me! I felt I had found a creative group of people that wanted to do all the same shoots and execute all the same ideas I was having. After the semester ended, I moved to New York for a semester when I was a photo intern for Cosmopolitan Magazine and followed that with a year in Italy taking photo courses. When I returned to campus, I got a message from Erin Kim, the then president of TFN, asking me to come out to a meeting. Then after a semester as a member, I became Creative Director. I loved every minute of it. Erin was not only a great friend but an amazing wealth of information. I learned so much from her, from talking about photo technique to big ideas. If you have had the pleasure of knowing her, she radiates ambition and creativity, with a hint of perfectionism making her by far one of my favorite people. Learning with her and being on the team of creatives I felt that with TFN I was able to grow my creativity ten-fold.
Currently at my job in Nashville I am working for a small clothing store doing content creation and product photography. I am one half of the creative team - the other half being my model, Olivia, who does all the graphic design for the store. Every day is different, which I enjoy and I am never bored. I have to push myself creatively a lot. Working with Olivia all the time, we are always trying to find new approaches to a shoot or how to rework a specific look and create not only photos that we like but also photos that will sell the product. Now, when I first started I thought- easy. I was very wrong.
A lot of what my job comes down to has almost everything to do with my time at TFN. Without the club I wouldn’t be nearly as comfortable working independently to create my own shoot ideas from scratch or work one on one with a stranger. I gained so much confidence shooting with TFN. I frequently think back to all the group shoots we did as members, and how many simple camera mistakes I was making. After each shoot, there was always a “well I’ll never make that mistake again.” Then I could really only be upset with myself, but now my work time is being paid for, so I need to be doing my best as fast as I can. There are days we are taking 20 different outfits out for an 8- hour shoot day.
I think I have found the best job for me to have right out of college. When I first started, I had to adjust to being in less control of my content and more open to what the store needed images of. Working creatively with others is always a balance, and once you find that, everyone can be more successful. I have found time to do personal shoots with a few of my friends here. Giving me my own creative outlet. As a photographer, there are so many things that play into doing it full time. It becomes a lot more technical after a while and a bit more routine. It takes a lot of effort and resources to push outside the box. My favorite part is getting to see all the new clothes we get in store and
