Editor’s Letter This issue celebrates before. Before COVID-19. Before classes were put online and shoots were canceled. This issue celebrates the eight weeks we got to create together on campus. Issue 05 marks milestones for the Fashion Network: We put on four photo shoots in a record amount of time. We tackled social issues surrounding body diversity and gender-neutral clothing. This issue celebrates our members. The looks they created. The photos they took. The words they shared. There is so much going on bigger than this club. Bigger than this publication. As college students juggling courses and jobs, there often is. But what we create is special. So as you flip through, please remember the community you’re a part of, the art you helped make, and the stories you helped tell.

To many, the growth of non-binary fashion represents a shift away from cultural norms surrounding gender roles. It’s a representation of an era of liberation and progress, striking down unnecessary boundaries that act as relics of a more traditional past. After all, fashion has largely supported societal notions of masculinity and femininity in men and women respectively. But despite popular belief, these trends aren’t new to the 21st century.

FASHION IS SOMEWHAT CYCLICAL — IT IS A SERIES OF REACTIONS TO PREVIOUS TRENDS THAT EVENTUALLY LOOPS AROUND TO FIND ITSELF INSPIRED BY THE AESTHETICS OF THE PAST.

Fashion is somewhat cyclical — it is a series of reactions to previous trends that eventually loops around to find itself inspired by the aesthetics of the past. When the United States granted women suffrage in the 1920s, the feminist movement led to a cultural shift that challenged traditional feminity. One of the most notable trends of this era was the androgynous fit dresses that have grown into iconic symbols of the 1920s. The silhouettes, meant to promote more androgynous figures, were a reaction to the decline of the corset, defying the traditional notions of a female figure. However, as with most trends, reaction trends started to lead fashion away from the androgyny of the 20s and returned to “more traditionally” inspired fads.

After World War II, with many gender dynamics having been disrupted by the draft and women entering the workforce, there was a strong affinity for binary fashion. By the time of the 60s and 70s, oppositional counterculture trends started to once again contrast the strict binary roles of 40s and 50s fashion, forming what came to be known as “unisex fashion. The trend brought androgyny to a new level, aiming to create clothes that could be worn by anyone. Designers found inspiration in second-wave feminism, as well as a desire to leave the 50s trends behind. A plethora of tunics and turtle necks were seen as the ultimate fashion statement, allowing people to express themselves without being limited to specific styles of clothing specifically designated for their gender identity.

NO LONGER FUELED

ONLY BY A REACTION TO PREVIOUSLY GENDERED FASHION, THE

CURRENT MOVEMENT

IS BASED IN

A COMMUNITY OF PEOPLE WHOSE IDENTITY INHERENTLY REJECTS THE GENDER BINARY AS A WHOLE.

By the 80s, fashion trends reverted back to polarized styles for him and for her, symbolic of a societal shift toward conservatism spurred by the growth of right-wing political popularity following the height of the Cold War in the late 70s. “Traditional” trends in gender remained common for the following decade or so, fueled by an association of “atypical” gender roles with the LGBTQIA+ community, which was especially vilified following the HIV/AIDS epidemic of the 80s.

The late 2000s saw a resurgence of social movements aiming to provide equal rights to the LGBTQIA+ community, the beginnings of fourth-wave feminism, and the 2008 recession. The feminist movement sought to deconstruct traditional gender roles in all facets of society, including fashion, as a means of deconstructing the structures that systematically discriminate against women. Likewise, the recession made a minimalist aesthetic more popular than more embellished styles which were seen as frivolous and unnecessary. As the 2010s started, there was a huge increase in the support of genderqueer and non-conforming individuals, which sparked many to use androgynous gender expression as an inspiration for androgynous fashion, firmly tying the fashion to a social movement. No longer fueled only by a reaction to previously gendered fashion, the current movement is based in a community of people whose identity inherently rejects the gender binary as a whole. There has been a steady increase in androgynous fashion throughout the decade, designer Rad Hourani released a unisex couture collection in 2015.

As a new decade begins, we are still seeing considerable shifts in fashion, makeup, and accessories. Propelled by gender-nonconformity itself, individuals are redefining the role of gender in fashion, reshaping the usual structure of androgynous trends. It is unclear whether this trend, in particular, will follow a path similar to those before it, or if its socio-cultural basis will make gender-neutral fashion an entirely new field that won’t decline as trends rise and fall. But what we do know is that fashion that contradicts “traditional gender roles is not new, and has a significant history of being linked with social change. From androgynous cuts to a truly agender aesthetic, non-binary fashion has developed into a staple trend that highlights specific cultural epochs and milestones highlighting the dialogue between fashion and gender, a dialogue that is unlikely to end.
