Tudor Grange Academy Solihull Sixth Form Prospectus 2014-15
Welcome to our Sixth Form We aspire to be the institution of choice for sixth form provision in Solihull. We believe we can offer all sixth form students a unique experience which will lead to excellent A level results, together with the skills and qualities needed for future success. In 2014 we were delighted with our year 13 results with a pass rate of 99.6% and over 56% A*- B grades. All students who applied to university were successful in gaining their desired place, with over a third of them securing places at some of the top universities in the country, including the Russell group of universities such as Warwick, Birmingham and Durham. Students who applied for highly competitive apprenticeship and employment opportunities were also successful in securing positions and for the second year running one very talented student went on to study at the Royal Northern College of Music. Whether your next step involves continuing your education at university or entering into your first career appointment, our aim for every student entering our sixth form is simple:
You have a fantastic two year experience that is surpassed by no other sixth form in the area.
You gain the best results possible, which in turn allows you to gain the best university places and the most rewarding careers.
You are fully supported throughout your time with us and gain the knowledge and skills to equip you for the competitive, rapidly evolving world that we live in.
You leave us proud to have been a student at Tudor Grange Academy Sixth Form and feeling that we have assisted you in securing your success.
All we ask for in return is this:
You are committed to achieving excellence in everything you do as a student and as a senior role model within the Academy.
You accept all the opportunities available to you to improve your own and others’ experiences and successes at the Academy.
You are an active partner in your learning and success, which will involve living up to expectations but also challenging others to do the same.
You work hard and play hard!
In a time of significant change in curriculum, assessment and progression we offer a robust history of stability, aspiration and inspiration. We will work with you and for you, providing a passport to your future success, allowing you to fulfil your dreams and ambitions. There is an abundance of opportunity waiting for you here at Tudor Grange. We want you to take advantage of it and join us for the next two years of your life journey. I look forward to welcoming you and your parents to Tudor Grange Academy Solihull Sixth Form and working with you to secure and realise your potential.
Mr D Turner Principal
Executive Board Welcome from Anna Parry and Matthew O’Neill, Chief Executives The Executive Board is comprised of year 13 students who have been elected by their fellow peers. Two of these board members are then chosen to become the Chief Executives. Students from years 7 to 12 are then selected to represent the student body on each of the social, charity, curricular and extra-curricular committees. Here at Tudor Grange, we aim to exceed all expectations. Chairing the Executive Board brings with it a variety of challenges and opportunities, from public speaking to bridging the gap between the students and teachers. We act as a mouthpiece for the student body, implementing proposals suggested by each of the social, charity, curriculum support and extra-curricular committees. We believe we make a special contribution by organising social events such as the Charity Ball, supporting numerous charities through cake sales and quizzes, listening to fellow students to enhance learning experiences and promoting exciting new activities. In this way we utilise the creativity of each and every student to constantly improve, shape and continue the long line of excellence that has been created here at Tudor Grange Academy.
....to achieve the very best in all we do
Executive Board Members
Choosing your course Students have the option of studying either three or four A levels. They should choose subjects which they enjoy and which they also perform well in. They need to consider which subjects they may require in order to pursue their future university or career plans. Tudor Grange year 11 students will have two guidance meetings during the remainder of this year to help them with their choices. A number of subjects have been identified as facilitating subjects by the Russell Group of universities; these are Mathematics, Further Maths, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, History, Geography, Modern Foreign Languages and English Literature. Choosing two of these subjects will definitely enhance a student’s ability to apply for highly competitive courses. Students choosing to study four A Levels* If you wish to study four A levels you must achieve: Six GCSE’s at grade A* or A including mathematics and English at grade B or above. Students choosing to study three A Levels* If you wish to study three A levels you must achieve:
Six GCSE’s at grade B or above including mathematics and English at grade C or above.
In addition to their A levels students will be expected to broaden their experiences by choosing at least one of the following options: Completing the Extended Project Qualification. Completing the Core Maths Qualification. Opting to undertake a one day per week industry placement. Participating in Academy enrichment opportunities. Attending mentor sessions to prepare them for university entry tests such as UKCAT, LNAT etc. *All A Level courses will require students to achieve a minimum of a B grade in all examined units of the GCSE Course
Industry placements In today’s highly competitive, technological workplace, we believe it can be beneficial for students to advance following their sixth form studies with a portfolio of both academic and ‘life’ skills that will enable them to be at the forefront of recruitment and selection for University places or applications for apprenticeships. Students studying three A levels may have the opportunity to spend one day per week at an industry placement matched to their interests and future plans. This workplace based learning will develop a number of skills that have been recommended by the CBI (Confederation of British Industry) as essential for success in business and adult working life, which they feel are currently lacking in students who leave sixth form education and even university study. The Academy will work with the students to find an appropriate work placement that will develop skills such as resilience, risk taking, problem solving, creativity, innovation and communication. All of these skills and attributes will be invaluable in later life and during interviews for university or apprenticeships. Students will be treated as young professionals within the work-place and expected to conduct themselves in accordance with this.
....a challenge and experience in itself!
Enrichment In addition to the academic curriculum all students are encouraged to become involved in the wider enrichment opportunities that are available:
Mentoring younger students across a wide range of subjects.
Helping to deliver sport, literacy and numeracy lessons at our partner primary school, Tudor Grange Primary Academy St James.
Joining our highly successful and well established Duke of Edinburgh Scheme.
Involvement in performances and concerts staged by our Music Department.
Participating in student societies, such as the popular Debating Society.
Wider involvement in the Academy helps students develop a range of valuable skills and gives them the confidence and experience to make the most of the opportunities that university or the world of work will give them. We believe in giving sixth form students real responsiblity. This includes giving them the chance to:
Organise large scale student events such as the Christmas Charity Ball and the year 11 A Level convention.
Lead student committees in areas such as charity fund-raising, media and publicity, website development and curriculum input. Undertake paid employment as lunch time duty staff.
....real responsibility!
Meeting Individual Needs The high retention rates we are already achieving demonstrate that students who join us stay with us. This is partly due to the support and guidance we put in place for our sixth form students.
Tutorial Support All sixth form students join a mixed year 12 and 13 tutor group with an experienced sixth form teacher to provide tutorial support and advice.
Leadership of the Sixth Form A designated member of the Senior Leadership Team and the Director of Post 16 provide support to students across the sixth form and careful arrangements are in place to track and monitor student progress. Students who are underachieving will receive a variety of support from tutors, subject teachers, curriculum leaders and senior leaders.
Specific Needs Students with specific and specialist needs, as a result of learning difficulties, disability or long term illness will be given specific support on a one to one basis. Some students with particular learning difficulties may receive additional support in class. Close links will be maintained with home and the curriculum will be modified if necessary to support a student in need. A member of our Academy mentoring team is also dedicated to support sixth form students with their work.
Sixth Form Bursary Financial support is available through the Sixth Form Bursary fund. Various factors may mean that a student is entitled to apply. Details of the policy and application forms can be found on the Support and Guidance section of the sixth form website. Any student who was eligible for free school meals in year 11 and whose circumstances have remained unchanged should see the Director of Post 16 for further details. Other students who live in households in receipts of certain benefits may also be eligible for the fund and are encouraged to enquire.

Teaching is outstanding.
Behaviour is outstanding and students feel very safe in school.
Leadership and management are outstanding. Leaders constantly strive for even better outcomes for students.
The new sixth form is outstanding.
Students in all subjects make exceptional progress because they are challenged and their personal skills are strongly developed.
Teaching in the sixth form is frequently outstanding. It encourages students to think as professional practitioners in the subjects.
