he fine run under the Cowley T brothers continued with a couple of great results over the
Easter period. They were both tough games against sides that are fighting for their lives at the bottom of the table. The long journey to Wigan just a couple of days after we beat Rochdale might have had an effect on our performance, although all clubs are in the same position at this stage of the season and so you can’t use tiredness as any excuse. It’s important to focus on one match at a time and Burton – who have done brilliantly since the turn of the year – are as dangerous as any opponents in this division. While it was obviously disappointing to see Sean Raggett get injured on Monday,
his reaction to it reinforced just how committed our players are. Our physio Bobby Bacic advised me that he didn’t want to come off and even if a resulting x-ray showed a fracture, he was adamant he would play on for the remainder of the season. That reminded me of the time Michael Doyle had a fracture in his shin and adopted a similar attitude when told by a specialist that he needed two months out. He instead insisted that he couldn’t feel any pain and so would continue regardless! It may not be the most sensible of views – and we will always be guided by our medical team – but it’s certainly an attitude I love. It was horrible to see our former player Jamal Lowe among those receiving vile racist abuse. It’s simply unacceptable, as is any kind of abuse. We’re hearing about different examples every day and if this isn’t dealt with – and quickly – I think there will be major repercussions for social media companies. The majority
IF THIS ISN’T DEALT WITH – AND QUICKLY – I THINK THERE WILL BE MAJOR REPERCUSSIONS FOR SOCIAL MEDIA COMPANIES of people use these services responsibly and it’s a shame that a few mindless individuals have to ruin things for everyone. Finally, a warm welcome to everyone from Burton who has made the journey down to the south coast today. Mark Catlin Chief Executive

HEAD COACH
DANNY COWLEY GOOD AFTERNOON TO YOU ALL AS WE GET READY TO FACE BURTON ALBION IN THE LATEST SKY BET LEAGUE ONE FIXTURE AT FRATTON PARK e come into the weekend W buoyed by taking maximum points from the Easter period. We were pleased with aspects of our play against Rochdale. It’s the first time that we’ve faced a team that have pressed as high and aggressively. We were able to break their press on numerous occasions in the first half and scored a really good goal that involved 17 passes.
It was also positive to score after winning the ball back from our high press. This gave us a really good place in the game. We lost our way a little bit in the middle part of the first half, but were able to regain control going into the break. We were then pleased with the first part of the second half, but disappointed that we could not add to our two-goal lead. Credit to a determined Rochdale side, though, who never gave up and went to the very end.
IF WE ARE GOING TO ACHIEVE WHAT WE ALL WANT, THEN WE ARE GOING TO NEED EVERYBODY PULLING IN THE SAME DIRECTION AND DRIVING THE On reflection, we felt that we could ENERGY OF THE have enjoyed more control in the PLAYERS latter part of the match and were disappointed to concede in the dying moments. Successful teams are able to keep clean sheets on a consistent basis and it is definitely something that we need to work towards.
We travelled to a rejuvenated Wigan on Easter Monday and it was great to see their long-term future secured. I am so pleased for their players, staff and supporters. What happened to them last season should never happen in English football. I can only imagine how tough it has been for everyone connected to the club and I’m pleased that there is now light at the end of their tunnel. It was probably our worst display and, subsequently, our most important victory. The pitch was particularly difficult, as portsmouthfc.co.uk
were the overhead conditions. We didn’t commit to the way that we want to play. We lacked energy and intensity on our press and we weren’t brave enough in possession. However, we scored with a brilliant individual effort from Andy Cannon and defended our goal with real focus and determination. While it is important to win when you don’t play well, our focus is always the performance. We took a lot of learning from the game that will help us moving forward. Nicky and I spent some time at the Pompey in the Community soccer school on Wednesday. It was great to meet all of the young fans and see their enthusiasm and passion – both for football and this club. It was also fantastic to see, first05
hand, the outstanding work the club does within the community. We look forward to being involved with this in any way we can. We go into the last eight fixtures with everything to play for. Our ambition is to keep improving our performance, both in possession and against the ball. We are working really hard to make this a reality. I think the future looks really exciting for everyone associated with Portsmouth Football Club. If we are going to achieve what we all want, then we are going to need everybody pulling in the same direction and driving the energy of the players. This was never going to be an 11-man job. We are motivated and inspired to create a team that you can all be proud of. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and his Burton team to Fratton Park for today’s game. They have enjoyed an unbelievable turnaround since he joined the club at the turn of the year. They were not only bottom of the league, but well adrift of the teams above. They now find themselves, at the beginning of April, looking up rather than beneath them. Play up Pompey! Danny

POMPEY v BURTON
run of four successive A victories means that Pompey head into the weekend as the form side in League One.
Danny Cowley’s reign as head coach has started with wins over Ipswich, Shrewsbury, Rochdale and Wigan to reinvigorate the quest for promotion. It leaves the side sitting fourth in the standings and with a fivepoint buffer to Charlton, who currently lie just outside the playoff places. The Cowley brothers have rightly been afforded plenty of praise for the work they have done in such a short space of time. But when the managerial awards are handed out at the end of the campaign, you could certainly put forward the boss of today’s opponents to receive recognition. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink took charge of the Brewers on New Year’s Day, at a stage when they were rock bottom and six points portsmouthfc.co.uk
adrift of safety. And the Dutchman then watched his troops crash to a disastrous 5-1 home defeat to Oxford just a few hours later. In the 16 games that followed, however, there have been just four defeats and an impressive 10 victories. There was a recent run of six successes in a row and although their form then tailed off slightly, Albion returned to winning ways by beating Swindon on Easter Monday. John Brayford’s thumping header late on at the Pirelli Stadium secured a maximum haul after Tom Hamer’s opener had been cancelled out by Jack Payne. It means they head to the south coast in a relatively comfortable 18th position – eight points clear of that dreaded dotted line. Pompey will need to be wary of the fact that their visitors have 08
collected more points on the road so far this season. Burton have won matches at Gillingham (1-0), Northampton (2-0), Charlton (2-1), Rochdale (2-0), AFC Wimbledon (1-0) and Crewe (3-0), as well as securing seven away draws. Fans will now be hoping they can increase the gap to the bottom four, although bettering last season’s finish of 12th seems unlikely. It was the Blues who came out on top when the sides met earlier in the campaign, with Marcus Harness hitting a hat-trick in a 4-2 defeat of his former club. But the four previous Fratton contests have each ended all square, including a 2-2 stalemate – courtesy of a late Brett Pitman penalty – last term. Now Pompey will be aiming to break their Brewers home duck this afternoon and record a fifth straight triumph to keep the bandwagon rolling. @Pompey
After spells playing in his homeland and Portugal, he went on to feature for Leeds, Atletico Madrid, Chelsea, Middlesbrough, Charlton and Cardiff. During that stint in Wales, Hasselbaink was part of the side that reached the 2008 FA Cup final and he started their defeat to Pompey at Wembley. Following a spell in charge of Royal Antwerp, he was appointed Burton boss for the first time in 2014 and guided them to promotion from League Two.

Striker Hutchinson earned England U23 honours after leaving Burton. Rejected by Nottingham Forest and Derby, the former Rolls Royce apprentice made an instant impression at Eton Park during the closing weeks of the 1966/67 campaign and netted 19 goals in 49 games for the Brewers before moving, via Cambridge, to Chelsea in the summer of 1968. He became noted for his long throws and starred as the Londoners won the FA Cup in 1970, but a series of injuries wrecked a potentially great career. Later a licensee, Hutchinson was steward at the Royal British Legion Club in Isleworth and died after a long illness in September 2002. TONY BAILEY Ex-Albion centre-back Bailey featured when Derby became champions of England in 1971/72. Born locally, he made his debut for the Brewers during their 1965/66 Southern League Division One promotion campaign and struck portsmouthfc.co.uk
six times in 154 outings before reuniting with boss Peter Taylor at the Baseball Ground in September 1970. He moved to Oldham in January 1974 and helped clinch the third tier title that season. Joining Bury as part of the deal that saw David Holt journey in the opposite direction, Bailey helped them defeat top-flight West Brom in the 1977/78 League Cup. Later appearing for Mossley, he worked for Coors brewery in Burton-onTrent. RICHARD JOBSON Central defender Jobson was capped by England’s ‘B’ team following his Burton departure. He scored twice in 18 appearances, leaving for Watford for a then club record fee of £25,000 in November 1982 and moved to Hull in February 1985. Voted ‘Player of the Year’ in 1986/87, he joined Oldham in the summer of 1990, starring as they won the Division Two title in 1990/91 and were FA Cup semi-finalists in 1993/94. Jobson was sold to Leeds for £1 million in October 1995, then reunited with boss Joe Royle at Manchester City and later turned out for Tranmere and Rochdale before having a spell as chairman of the PFA. JOHN BRAYFORD England semi-pro international right-back Brayford missed just one match for Albion during the 2007/08 campaign. The first graduate of the current youth system at Burton, he departed for Crewe in September 2008 and was twice voted ‘Player of the Year’. He reunited with boss Nigel Clough at Derby in May 2010 and was their ever-present star man in 2010/11. Sold to Cardiff for 11
£1.5 million in July 2013, Brayford linked up with Clough again at Sheffield United for a similar fee at the beginning of 2015, then followed him back to the Pirelli Stadium in the summer of 2017 and has hit 17 goals in 272 matches for the Brewers.
MARCUS HARNESS Tricky winger Harness helped Burton secure the 2014/15 League Two title. Making his league debut in a 1-0 defeat at Scunthorpe four months before turning professional in July 2014, he starred in their 2014/15 League Cup win over top-flight QPR and returned from a loan spell at Aldershot to feature in the Brewers’ 2015/16 rise into the Championship. Borrowed by Port Vale for the 2017/18 campaign, Harness netted six goals in 83 games for the Brewers prior to joining Pompey in the summer of July 2019. He helped the Blues reach the League One play-offs and secure another EFL Trophy final appearance last season. @Pompey

A KNIGHT’S TALE ALAN KNIGHT MADE 801 APPEARANCES FOR POMPEY AND IS NOW CLUB AMBASSADOR t wasn’t until I watched the I‘Football’s recent three-part documentary Darkest Secret’ that it dawned on me how close I was – both in proximity and timeline – to some of the game’s biggest atrocities, perpetrated by evil individuals who destroyed lives.
Southampton is located 20 miles down the road and there was Bob Higgins, who would later be imprisoned for 24 years following a catalogue of abuse against young players under his charge who had dreams of becoming professional players. I appeared against the likes of Paul Stewart and David White, who were just two of the central characters in the programme and victims of a vile network that extended way beyond Higgins. At the time, I never would have known the burden that they – and countless others – carried. I thought my aching limbs and
deafness were a bad enough legacy of my career and it’s something I feel most days. But they pale into insignificant with the mental pain inflicted on these brave individuals. It’s horrible that they had to suffer in silence during their most impressionable years. The only scars I bear are the physical ones and although some – like the clash with Eric Young that left me with a fractured skull – were devastating, I can always look back fondly on all those other unblemished years. I am eternally grateful that when I started out in football, I had the best role models in people like Ray Crawford. I now realise how fortunate I was in the way the dice rolled. The youth set-up at Fratton Park was tremendous, but who knows what would have happened if I’d taken a different fork in the road as a teenager.
In my experience, the number of good people at any club outweighs the bad. I know that from talking to plenty of players and coaches over the years. Thankfully at Southampton, one of the most genuine guys you could hope to meet, Dave Merrington, discovered the outrage and blew the whistle on Higgins, who was somehow allowed to simply move his disgusting activities to another part of the country. All these years later, the burning question is how was this allowed to happen and develop on such a huge scale? Seeing these criminals now, with their influence and power having long since been stripped away, you wonder how they were able to wield it in the first place. For them it is a case of nothing lasting forever. Sadly, the same cannot be said for their victims.
ON THIS DAY APRIL
10 1954 Pompey produced a fine second half display to beat Newcastle 2-0 – courtesy of goals from Mike Barnard (above) and Gordon Dale – and ease their top-flight relegation fears.
1993 Guy Whittingham netted his 43rd goal of the season to break a record held by Billy Haines since 1927 and help the Blues stretch their unbeaten run to nine games with a 2-1 win at Bristol Rovers.
2004 Eyal Berkovic (above) changed the game in Pompey’s favour after coming off the bench, although it was Yakubu who netted their equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Charlton.
2010 West Ham’s victory over Sunderland confirmed the troubled Blues’ relegation from the Premier League on the eve of their memorable FA Cup semi-final triumph over Tottenham.
2012 Harry Kane scored his – to date – only goal against Pompey, with the current England skipper netting the winner at Fratton Park for loan club Millwall.
DID YOU KNOW? During the Second World War, Reg Flewin – who would later skipper Pompey to consecutive 17 portsmouthfc.co.uk @Pompey top-flight titles – was a heavyweight boxing champion for the Royal Marines.

MOORE’S MEMORIES I SPOKE TO HANCOTT THE FOLLOWING DAY AND HE WAS ENTITLED TO LOOK FORWARD AND DREAM ABOUT WHAT WAS TO COME, WHICH HE DID IN AN ELOQUENT INTERVIEW THAT BELIED HIS AGE AND INEXPERIENCE
midst all the hullabaloo A created by the arrival of the Cowley brothers to Fratton Park, you might have missed the lower profile news of Joe Hancott’s departure.
The fluctuating fortunes of fledgling footballers was highlighted once more, as the club’s youngest post-war debutant – following in the footsteps of Gary O’Neil – left and signed for Bognor. A bright future beckoned for the full-back when he was called up for the senior side’s pre-season trip to Ireland in the summer of 2019, when he netted a classy goal and produced a lively performance in an 11-0 rout of UCD. That contribution should not be devalued by the fact that had Kenny Jackett asked this 60-year-old arthritic to provide a 20-minute stint, the likelihood is even I would have got on the scoresheet. I spoke to Hancott the following day and he was entitled to look forward and dream about what was to come, which he did in an eloquent interview that belied his age and inexperience. Over the past two decades, one of the most fascinating aspects of my job has been talking to these unpolished diamonds on the beginning of their footballing adventures, then looking back years later to see where it took them. Which ones could you point at down the line when they have portsmouthfc.co.uk
become household names and say that I gave them their very first interview? Not even two years has elapsed since that day in Dublin and the Pompey dream is over for Hancott, cruelly cut short by an ACL injury, inflicted not during a meaningful match, but rather an incident on the training pitch. It could have happened to anyone. I remember a day seven years earlier when I had to ask Roger the security man to point out Jed Wallace, who I was keen to interview. Like Hancott, his wise words were not part of some media training programme, but flowed naturally, as he spoke of his dreams and ambitions. Back then the midfielder had yet to make his league debut. That would arrive a few months later in a 5-0 drubbing at Swindon, which formed part of a 23-game winless run. Talk about a baptism of fire! Yet even that catastrophic period failed to dent Wallace’s belief – 19
and demeanour – about what the future held for him. I also have vivid memories of speaking to Conor Chaplin by the side of the pitch at Morecambe after his first goal for the club. Such was his inexperience, the striker was accompanied by coach Paul Hardyman throughout. There were others. Asmir Begovic is a keeper who has performed at the highest level, while Joel Ward and Adam Webster are more than holding their own in the Premier League and Marlon Pack is a solid Championship performer. All had hopes they aspired towards when they first sat down to speak with me. Sadly, every now and then, like an apple falling from a tree, one drops by the wayside before it can ripen. Hopefully this does not signal the termination of Hancott’s professional dream, but it is merely a pause. It would be great if he could, one day, look back on his Emerald Isle experience as the beginning of a great adventure, rather than the end. @Pompey

FROM THE ARCHIVE
THE POMPEY HISTORY SOCIETY TAKE A DELVE INTO THE CLUB’S ARCHIVE, PULL OUT A DOCUMENT OR ARTEFACT AND TELL THE STORY BEHIND IT. IN THIS ISSUE, WE HAVE FOUND EVIDENCE OF HOW A BLUES TRANSFER FROM THE 1960s WAS PAID OFF… The 1960s? Record transfer? I’m guessing Mike Trebilcock. Very good. You’ve clearly been paying attention as the season has gone on. In February 1968, Pompey were in contention for promotion to the old first division. What manager George Smith thought the team needed was a top-quality striker to score the goals to get us back where we belonged. And Trebilcock looked like just the man? For sure. He was at top-flight Everton, having started his career at Plymouth, and made more than a name for himself in the 1966 FA Cup final, scoring twice to help the Toffees beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-2. An offer of £40,000 was accepted and ‘Trebs’ signed for Pompey in time to make his debut at Rotherham in February 1968. A goal helped his team beat Derby 3-2 on his home debut and, 10 days later, he struck a memorable winner in front of 44,000 as Fulham were defeated in an FA Cup replay at Fratton Park.
Which one was that? 1970/71. He scored arguably the most memorable Pompey goal of a generation, equalising late on against Arsenal in the FA Cup fourth round at Fratton Park and bagged eight league goals in 24 appearances. Typically, six of those came in October 1970 as he returned from injury with a bang, netting hat-tricks against Watford and Blackburn. He really was an all or nothing type of player…
The only way was up then? Alas not. Those two ended up Trebilcock’s only goals of the season for Pompey and the team slumped to a fifth placed finish, well off the promotion pace in the final analysis. A pity. So what have you got for us? This is a statement for a ‘February’ payment towards the £30,000 balance of his fee. Unfortunately, it’s not dated, but we are assuming it would be February 1968, so the first instalment after an initial down payment. Pompey were also paying interest (at eight per cent) on the balance. Take off the inevitable chunk to the taxman (eight shillings and three old pence in the pound, so 25 per cent) and the Blues were left with a bill of £2,612 and eight old pence. A stamp by Morris, Crocker & Co Chartered Accountants confirms all must have been above board. A right old maths lesson and no mistake. What next for Trebilcock? He would stay at Pompey until the end of the 1971/72 campaign, but his spell could be best described as enigmatic. There was one season which kind of summed up his Pompey career.

BLUE KITCHEN – BACK TO WORK
ompey in the Community has received funding P from the Solent Supporting Employment Grants Programme – which is part funded by
training, further education or volunteering for those who participate.
the European Social Fund – to provide a free 12-week practical, into work cookery course that will introduce and develop essential skills and techniques, leading to education, training and employment.
As part of the into work element of the course, the charity will offer CV building, basic literacy and numeracy skills, which will be delivered by a member of the qualified teaching staff. A Job Search club will be established and will be supported online for participants to keep in touch with and be able to access at any time.
The course is primarily aimed at unemployed individuals or those who are socially inactive. They might be complete kitchen novices or perhaps in need of refreshing and updating their previous skills.
If you are in receipt of universal credit, this course will not affect your payments. Interested? Then email gavin.randall@pompeyitc.org.uk for more information and to register. The course runs for 12 weeks and starts in the week commencing April 26.
With the course covering such diverse elements from kitchen knife skills to CV writing, it will hopefully create a pathway into employment,

STEVE BONE’S
VIEW FROM THE NORTH STAND elcome to a lockdown W version of Football Room 101, in which you lot are invited
see these coiffured players with their designer cuts – they’ve obviously had a barber smuggled in.” On a similar theme, Josh0logy says: “Topknots! Should be an immediate 10-game ban. Leeds wouldn't have any players left.”
to submit things that irritate you about the beautiful game. This has been a popular subject in non-lockdown times, with entries ranging from Martin Keown’s cocommentating to corners being called flag-kicks.
John Spicer’s nomination is quite specific: It is the phrase ‘let’s bring in Peter Walton’. There’s another oft-heard sentence that Hobgoblinhahn wants banned: “If that challenge had been outside the box it would have been a free-kick.”
So I thought we ought to devote an episode of Room 101 to football lockdown-style – and you have come up with a wide range of items to be chucked in. I must start by apologising to Bob Beech’s wife, as I fear my plea for entries to this has made him angry for a fortnight. Bob wants the minute’s applause included (and replaced with the traditional minute’s silence). The Pompey History Society agree, making the point it’s a particularly needless change in grounds where there are no fans to ruin the silence. Back to Bob, who’s only just started: “During half-time in lockdown games,” he asks, “why do stadium announcers play music? Who do they think is being entertained by it?” And he has not quite finished yet… “What has irritated and amused me in equal measure during lockdown games is goalscorers ‘ssshhh’ing empty stands. Why? What is the actual point?” Going one better than Bob with FOUR bids for items going down the 101 chute is Mike Blythman: “1: Seasons not being completed. Even worse if they do a calculation to work out who would have won/finished bottom. Football is about playing football. 2: Fake crowd noise on the TV – mismatched background drone portsmouthfc.co.uk
JOHN SPICER’S NOMINATION IS QUITE SPECIFIC: IT IS THE PHRASE ‘LET’S BRING IN PETER WALTON’ which only the viewers hear! The game has no connection to it. 3: Managers and players with ridiculously over-optimistic press statements. ‘Yeah we won our first game in 19 attempts, but I think we'll put a run together to take us to the play-offs or even the automatics.’” Which brings Mike to number four: “Plurals that make no sense – the automatics, your Man Uniteds, your Liverpools.” Jamie Parkinson also nominates the poor use of plurals. Next to hair. Paul Whiteaway wants players who have clearly had proper haircuts in Room 101: “Haircuts are a thing of the past for me, but it bugs me when I 26
Andy Ford’s bugbear is ‘exaggerated screams after minor fouls’, while Anthony Hesse gets annoyed by commentators saying: “Apologies if you heard some inappropriate language there.” It’s probably enough for him to produce his own inappropriate language... Andy (@backhomeinpo2 on Twitter) agrees. Steve Cope is put out by players wearing short sleeves and gloves at the same time, while getting Gaz Jones’ goat is this: “Players placing the ball over the quadrant line on a corner by millimetres as if it makes a difference to the quality of the ball into the box. Some spend ages doing it then play a short corner.” The last word goes to Michael Saunders, infuriated by the covering of empty seats in grounds: “The worst one is at Manchester City. The upper tier has been covered in sky blue banners with ‘city’ in white – covering sky blue seats with ‘city’ (in the exact same size and font) picked out in white seats.”
