History of May Day by the Bay May Day by the Bay was started by Doug Chang and Ku‘ulei Cooper in 1981. Both of them moved to Kaua‘i from O‘ahu and were missing the music and hula that they were a part of, and had access to. Their idea was to bring world-class music and hula to Kaua‘i. May Day by the Bay was held at various locations in Princeville starting with Hanalei Bay Resort and was very successful. The last one was held in 1993. Doug is the brother-in-law of Naomi Yokotake (one of our members) and he gave us permission to carry on this wonderful event that has created so many great memories over the years. We thank them both very much for their wonderful gift and support. They are unable to attend this year, but we hope to see them next year on May 12, 2018.
