Food at the Fair
he food booths are definitely a highlight for everyone who visits the fair. This year each has made an effort to expand the menu with the addition of healthy choices and locally grown and made items. And of course, you’ll find carnival favorites, too! Food booths are managed by nonprofits, including the Pop Warner chapters from Kapaa, Koloa, Kekaha and Lihue, plus the Kauai High School, Island School and the Haraguchi Rice Mill. The revenue generated is a fundraiser critical to each of these programs in our community and to the Farm Bureau.
Farm Fair Goes Zero Waste This year, the Farm Fair food booths “go green” with the help of Zero Waste Kauai and Kapaa JROTC cadets. Each nonprofit food vendor has made a commitment to use compostable foodware, investing to help support the reduction of waste at the fair. This adds to other green efforts at the fair, such as CFL lighting, oil recycling and the use of HI-5 containers. In line with the county’s commitment to zero waste, new waste stations will be provided to help fairgoers separate waste in the food areas into containers marked compostable, recycling and trash. Zero Waste volunteers and the Kapaa JROTC cadets will be on hand to help implement the new system and answer questions. he Kauai County Farm Bureau Fair kicks off with Kauai-style fun on Thursday with hula in the ancient kahiko and auwana style with Leinaala Jardin’s Halau Ka Lei Mokihana followed by the official blessing and opening ceremony and fair dedication on Thursday night! Tsunami Taiko follows with their lively drumming performance at 7 p.m. Foodies will be tasting treats over at the Kauai Coffee celebrity cook-off for charity from 7 to 9 p.m. KGEFCU is the $500 Blackout Bingo Game Sponsor at 7:45 p.m. and this year is proud to sponsor the Rooster Country Karaoke Finalists Competition with on-air personality Ed Kanoi. n Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. in the Agricultural Exhibit Tent, the Kauai Woodturners Club will be hosting a demonstration focusing on woods commonly used, the different types of bowls, and the techniques used to make them.
The Garden Island Resource Conservation & Development, Inc.’s Forestry Committee will be there with their tropical hardwood display. Featuring wood samples of high value tropical timber trees grown here on Kauai.
t’s fair time again and the Kauai County Farm Bureau Fair Home Economics Show, organized and staffed by the Kauai Association for Family, and Community Education, has added some new and interesting contests. Origami, a new arts and crafts contest for youth and adults, has been included this year. Get your nimble fingers warmed up and fold some interesting, colorful and beautiful pieces of Japanese origami, the fine art of paper folding. Also put together some recycled material to create an interesting artifact constructed of throwaways. Our special ingredient contest for youth and adults is pineapple. Prepare bread, muffins, cookies, cake or confection using
pineapple as the predominating flavor. Pick up a rules booklet or visit kauaifarmfair. org for full list of ways to participate. Bring all your entries to the Home Economics Show tent on Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon. Ribbons and/or cash prizes will be awarded in most categories. KAFCE has expanded the Legos “R” competition to include a Model Building Contest using Lego Bricks for youth only, 8-12 years of age, to be held in the Home Economics Show tent Sunday at noon. You must pre-register on Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon in the Home Show tent. The contest is limited to the first 20 individual registrants. You may have a friend or parent register for you. Please

his year the Kauai Bonsai club will present a roundtable of demonstrations on Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m. featuring the club’s more experienced members. Topics from trimming to putting together a group, and planting are covered. Members will be available for questions, helpful tips on the fundamentals, horticulture, aesthetics and traditions of bonsai for those wishing to learn more about this living art.

he Farm Bureau Fruit & Vegetable Show is an annual tradition. Every year, experienced farmers, backyard growers and students bring their fruits and vegetables from atemoya to vanilla to Vidinha Stadium the Thursday morning before the fair for judging in the Fruit & Vegetable competition. For fair attendees, the show offers a glimpse of the many varieties that are currently grown on Kauai. Entries will be accepted on Thursday from 8 a.m. to noon at the Fruit & Vegetables tent exhibit area of the fairground. Late entries will be displayed but not judged. All entries must be grown on Kauai by their exhibitor, only one per variety of commodity. Those with more than 10 entries are requested to prepare their entry forms in advance. Kauai Coffee presents Annual Kauai Grown Celebrity Chef Cookoff for Charity Thursday, 7 to 9 p.m.

he Kauai Coffee Cookoff for Charity with Kauai Grown opens the fair on Grand Opening Night this year at 7 p.m. in the Agricultural Exhibit Tent. The public is invited, along with our judges, to sample the plates of six top Kauai Chefs using the freshest Kauai Grown and raised farm ingredients and select your favorites. Each chef competes for
the charity of their choice, the winning chef to receive a $2,000 donation to their charity of choice. Tickets are available to 100 members of the public and can be purchased online in advance of the event, or a limited number will be at the Exhibit tent for purchase at 6 p.m. Your $30 donation goes to support the charity prize. 4-H: The Power of Youth!
L
ook for the 4-Hers at the fair! You’ll find them wearing the traditional 4-H logo a green four-leaf clover with white “H” on each leaf representing head, heart, hands and health. The 4-H Petting Zoo will be operated during limited hours by 4-H members in the Livestock tent. Bring a child to share the experience of cuddling up to a bunny or petting a tame chicken. Take advantage of a teachable moment to develop an appreciation of animals and agriculture. Cost to enter is $2 a person. All proceeds of the zoo will benefit the Kauai 4-H Federation, a notfor-profit organization that provides educational opportunities for youth. During the year, the 4-H Federation provides opportunities for youth to lead, learn and grow
F through workshops, leadership trainings, conferences and service learning projects. With the help of adults, youth plan and implement these activities while developing valuable life skills. 4-H activities will take place under the Livestock Tent during the four day fair. Come and learn about the many things 4-H has
to offer. There is something for everyone and you’ll discover that it’s much more than raising livestock! Sign up as a 4-H volunteer and experience the rewarding feeling of helping others! 2013 Scholarship Recipients
our $1,000 agricultural scholarships were awarded to three students from Kapaa High School and an undergraduate at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. They are: • Dawn Masako Mones. Dawn graduated from Kapaa High School and she will be attending California Polytechnic University to study Tropical Plant Science and AgroEcology. • Madeline Rausch. Madeline is a graduate of Kapaa High School and is planning to attend California Polytechnic University to study Agricultural Business with a concentration in Viticulture. • Carlie Ann DeSilva is a graduate from Kapaa
High School and is planning to attend University of Hawaii at Hilo to study pre-veterinary medicine. • Casandra Kawamura is a 2010 Kauai High School graduate attending the University of Hawaii at Manoa studying animal science and striving to become a large animal veterinarian In addition, two $1,000 farm family scholarship recipients were awarded to members of Kauai County Farm Bureau families. They are: • Angela DunsmoorConnor. She graduated from Kauai High School and is the daughter of Joseph Dunsmoor, who farms at Waipa. Angela will be attending Univer-
sity of Notre Dame and studying engineering. • Ting Huang. Ting is a 2008 Kauai High School graduate and is studying nursing at Kapiolani Community College in Honolulu. Ting’s parents, Hannah and James, are active Kauai County Farm Bureau members and own Kauai Glory Farm. 2013 is the first year Hawaii Tropical Flowers and Foliage Association (HTFFA), Kauai Chapter offered scholarships to students in college studying agriculture. HTFFA-Kauai awarded Teri Lau a $1,000 scholarship. • Teri Lau attends Kauai Community College, works at the farm on campus and is studying horticulture.
