Back to our Roots Back to Roots will be featured for the 2014 Kauai County Farm Bureau Fair Fruit & Vegetable Show Every year experienced farmers, backyard growers and students bring their fruits and vegetables from Atemoya to Vanilla to Vidinha Stadium to be displayed at the Kauai County Farm Bureau Fair. But the preparations for this annual display typically start months earlier for
many varieties. To encourage more aspiring farmers to get their hands in the dirt, UH CTAHR will be on site at the Garden Fair with seeds and information for those interested to participate. This year’s Kauai County Farm Bureau Fair on Aug. 21-24 will focus on the theme “Back to our Roots” making root vegetables a natural choice as the crop of choice for the Fruit & Vegetable Show special contest. Carrots, radish, turnip, sweet potato, taro and other root vegetables will be featured this year. Other fruits and vegetables will also be shown. Visit the UH CTAHR Educational tent in front of the One Stop for this year’s rules, as well as tips and seeds for the Farm Fair Fruit and Vegetable Show and Contest. Farm Fair Fruit & Vegetable Show & Contest Rules are downloadable at www.kauaifarmfair.org and can be picked up at the weekly Kauai Community Market (Saturdays at KCC, 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.) as well as at the UHCTAHR office in Lihue (3060 Eiwa St., Room 210).

Spring to life with the Garden Fair
Kauai County Farm Bureau and UH CTAHR will host the 19th annual Garden Fair Saturday, April 19th at Kauai Community College front lawn 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The lawn will spring to life with gardeners, suppliers, garden lovers and consumers there to shop the wide variety of plants, landscape products and equipment, and to find out the latest gardening information and tips. Hosted by Kauai County Farm Bureau, University of Hawaii College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, and Kauai Community College, the annual Kauai Garden Fair is one of the largest gatherings of green thumbs on Kauai and a great way to share the bounty of the island firsthand. This one-day, free event begins with a “one-stop shop” for the garden, where a wide variety of tropical plants, flowers, pro-
duce and seeds will be available for purchase representing farmers, nurseries and organizations from around the island. Here you can surround yourself with what is Kauai Grown — cut flowers, plants and trees, produce and even food and items and products. Look for the “Kauai Grown” signs and QR codes to learn more about some of the farms and nurseries behind the products or visit them at www.kauaigrown.org. The event caters to growers from novice to expert, celebrating gardening in all of its aspects. You’ll find opportunities to network with organizations that assist gardeners and agriculture, stroll through the many information booths to learn what’s new and swap tips. A day-long schedule of “Garden Talks” is hosted by UH College of Tropical Agriculture and Kauai Community College and
provides opportunities to learn about a wide range of gardening topics from organic gardening methods, small animals for the backyard, principles and practices of horticulture and plant science, bugs and controlling them, tropical fruit trees, aquaponics and home composting. If you have a specific problem you can visit the Plant Clinic and Agricultural Information

booth to visit with area experts, purchase UH seed varieties, and pick up some free root crop seeds and growing tips for this year’s Farm Fair Fruit and Vegetable Show and Contest with the theme “Back to Our Roots.” For keiki, the 4-H kids area is a highlight that can’t be missed, with a mini petting zoo, hosted play area for toddlers, and planting activities to introduce little ones to the garden. It’s also a chance to meet some of our “future farmers” — students learning about gardening and agriculture from elementary to high school level. The weekly Kauai Community Market will team up with the Garden Fair and extend its hours for the day – reminding us of the delicious end product of these homegrown efforts. This expanded farmers market features a range of Kauai Grown fruits and produce as well as
value added agricultural products straight from the farm like honey, goat cheese and coffee plus a variety of freshly baked goods, smoothies and local treats like kulolo and mochi. The Garden Fair is a special time when we have an opportunity to interact with the tremendous variety of people who fit under that large tent called agriculture. Become a Kauai Master Gardener The Kauai Master Gardener program is an educational outreach program administered by the University of Hawaii College of Agriculture and Human Resources Cooperative Extension Service with the mission to extend relevant, science-based horticultural knowledge and information to the public through community outreach and education.
Training Kauai Master Gardeners are trained by UH faculty and local experts in botany, plant physiology, soil science, organic agriculture, plant pathology, entomology, native plants and more. Participants receive about 48 hours of classroom training, equivalent to a college-level introductory horticulture course. The training program is typically held for
16 weeks from January to April. The program’s core curriculum covers topics such as: • Basic botany and plant physiology • Plant propagation and pruning • Soils and fertilizers • Organic gardening • Plant pathology/diseases • Entomology and integrated pest management • Gardening fruits, vegetables, tropical plants • Tropical trees, lawns and ground covers In the first year after completing the training course, participants are required to fulfill a minimum of 50 hours of volunteer service in order to become certified Master Gardeners, and participate in continuing education and service beyond the program.
Master Gardeners have conducted garden classes on container gardens, orchids, personality garden and growing kale. Master Gardeners also presented garden information to Kauai’s senior citizens and helped with school gardens. Certified Master Gardeners enjoy many benefits and join a group of like-minded gardeners, passionate about making a difference in their community. The Kauai Master Gardeners will be at the April 19 Garden Fair and will be selling University of Hawaii CTAHR seeds and share garden advice with anyone who stops by. Contact Kim Perry, Kauai MG Coordinator, 274-3478 or email, kperry2@hawaii.edu or during the morning garden talk at 9:30 a.m.
