to do this show, as well,” Kanekuni said. “They’re very exited to be able to do it, finally.” Chicago offers a satirical look at the justice system and how it can be affected by celebrities, publicity, spin and changing facts. The next thing you know, suspects are stars instead of criminals. “It’s done in this beautiful burlesque style that makes it so much fun,” Ellwood said.

and satirical storytelling, it languished into semi-obscurity. Apparently, there wasn’t much of an audience for a burlesque story about merry murderesses,” she wrote. That changed in 1994 with OJ Simpson driving his slow-moving white Ford Bronco with police in pursuit and media overhead filming it all and the following trial that commanded national publicity, start to finish and beyond. A star, it seemed to some, got away with murder. “Producers saw that the pump was primed — the American public was ready
for Chicago,” Ellwood wrote. It tells the story of two women, celebrities, each charged in the death of a man. The 1996 Broadway revival of Chicago holds the record as the longest-running musical revival and the longest-running American musical in Broadway history. The 1997 West End revival became the longest-running American musical in West End history. “Bright lights, show-stopping songs, and toe-tapping dance numbers won Chicago Tony Awards for Best Revival of a Musical
and Best Choreography and a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album. The filmed version, which won six Academy Awards in 2002, including Best Picture, introduced a new set of fans to this unforgettable journey into Chicago’s sultry, storied past,” she wrote. Ellwood is herself a dancer. “I love Bob Fosse. I am so honored to be able to have this experience to get into this beautiful burlesque style of movement that’s so much fun,” she said. “Our community actors have been asking to be able

hours a night,” Aodhagain said following a recent rehearsal. “I love this musical. I love the 1920s,” she added. “I enjoy the fact that none of the main characters are really good people.” Not good people, but they can sure sing and dance and show their stuff and have a whole lotta fun. Cheryl Ellwood is directing the musical that opens next week. Dolly Kanekuni is the musical director. It’s the first time in Hawaii a full version of Chicago will be done. “It’s look great, the cast is great, it should be a great show,” Ellwood said. She called it a “dream come true” to direct Chicago. She was determined to keep the “iconic moves” choreographed by Bob Fosse but at the same time, “make it our own.” “So we’re honoring the style of the original piece but give it room to breathe,” she said. Here’s how she describes Chicago, which was launched on Broadway in 1975 by the songwriting team of John Kander and Fred Ebb. “It ran for two years; then despite its razzle dazzle
For Aodhagain, who grew up in Montana, this is first time on stage in a decade and her first lead role. She admits to feeling some pressure and being a little nervous — but just a little. “I don’t want to scare the director,” she said, laughing. Ellwood has no worries. She knew she had her Roxie Hart after auditions.

hat and aloha shirt are all scattered throughout the lineup for an event that’s entitled “Not Your Typical Garden Party” for a reason. “You’ll walk through the gardens and come upon different food stations with foods provided by different local vendors and then you will come upon entertainment,” said Pam Warren, an organizer. Storms in 2018 flooded several parts of the island,
destroyed homes and triggered landslides that closed Kuhio Highway for more than a year. The weather also damaged mature trees and delicate plants in Anaina Hou’s botanical garden, as well as historically replicated buildings. First and foremost the fundraiser is to help replace some of those buildings and to restore parts of the gardens that were destroyed.
NOW OPEN
Alongside that, though, it’s a reminder that Aniana Hou needs support for maintaining the gardens, too. “Some of the smaller delicate plants were brutalized (during the storms) and so restoration is needed, but the gardens just need funding to be kept in proper condition,” Warren said. “We’re hoping to get some people interested for maintenance of the gardens.” Pupus will be available too, from places like Tiki Iniki, April’s Cakes, Tropic Fish Kauai, Kalypso Café, Delicious pupus will be created by Kauai Shrimp, Palate Wine
Bar, Eat Healthy Cafe, Shivalik Indian Cuisine. A silent auction includes items like a package of four round trip tickets to Oahu from Makani Kai Air, Kauai-made gift baskets, specialty wines, resort stays, car detailing, massage, and gardening classes, plus more. The $100 ticket price includes wine, pupus and wonderfully exciting entertainment. Ron Wiley and Michelle Rundgren will MC and judge our contests. that movie stars can accomplish — which, for Tarantino, is anything. That the
Q
uentin Tarantino has, for a while now, been reminding us what’s so great about movies — or at least, what he thinks is so great about them. He’s made an old-fashioned double-feature (“Death Proof,” of “Grindhouse”), resurrected the wide-screen format of 70mm Ultra Panavision (“The Hateful Eight”) and generally presided as the pre-eminent B-movie evangelist for a generation. The power and thrill of exploitation movies, he has earnestly espoused, can conquer all evils — or at least slavery (“Django Unchained”) and the Nazis (“Inglourious Basterds”). But “Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood,” set in 1969 Los Angeles, is Tarantino’s most affectionate and poignant ode yet to the movie business. It’s a breezy, woozy Hollywood fable that luxuriates in the simple pleasures of the movies and the colorful swirl of the Dream Factory’s backlot. Some pleasures are nostalgic, and some — like driving down Sunset Boulevard or martinis at Musso & Frank — are everlasting. Here, movie love feels contagious, like something in the air. In one of the film’s best scenes, Margot Robbie’s Sharon Tate explains at a theater’s ticket office that she’s in the movie, the newly released caper “The Wrecking Crew,” (“I’m the klutz!” she says cheerfully). Inside, she giggles with delight at

seeing herself on the big screen, giddily mimicking her character’s martial-arts moves and watching to see if the audience laughs at one of her lines. (They do.) The pleasures in “Once Upon a Time” are also ours. Tarantino, has lowered his typically feverish temperature to a warming simmer, bathing us in the golden California light and the movie-star glow of his leading men, Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt. They spend copious amounts of time driving through the Hollywood Hills in a creamy Coupe de Ville, riding along like Butch and Sundance and just as nice to look at. DiCaprio is Rick Dalton, a Burt Reynolds-type actor of TV Westerns (his claim to fame is the ‘50s hit “Bounty Law”) whose career is stalling. Pitt is Cliff Booth, his stunt double and best friend, a war veteran with a bad reputation but a friendly, relaxed manner. They have a natural, easy rapport, with Booth doubling as a drinking buddy and support system for Dalton, who’s increasingly anxious about his typecast future. (Al Pacino,
as his agent, urges him to head to Italy for a spaghetti Western.) In DiCaprio’s finest sequence, he chats between takes on a Western called “Lancer” with a frightfully serious Method Acting 8-year-old co-star (Julia Butters) before forgetting his lines. After a bout of self-loathing in his trailer, he returns and nails the scene. DiCaprio, a preternaturally self-possessed actor himself, captures the whole arc beautifully. And if you’re going to make a movie that celebrates what’s grand about Hollywood, it helps to have Brad Pitt in it. The chemistry between him and DiCaprio, together for the first time, is a delight; I would gladly watch them drive around lacquered, golden-hour Los Angeles, with cinematographer Robert Richardson trailing them, for longer than the already lengthy running time of “Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood.” Pitt, in particular, appears so utterly self-possessed. It’s a swaggering grade-A movie star performance in a movie that celebrates all

SINGING WITH THE SMITHS
‘Sailing Along the Wailua River’ offers journey into old Hawaii BILL BULEY TGIFR!DAY
E
very now and then, I find a treasure at a thrift store. My most recent might be the best yet. “Sailing Along the Wailua River” is an album produced by Sounds of Hawaii in the 1960s. It features the music of the Smith family. The album was a little warped, but the album cover was in nice shape, with pictures of Captain Walter Smith Sr., Captain Freckles, Captain Bill, Captain John and Captain Ronald. When I saw my friend Kamika Smith at the recent chamber luncheon, I asked if he had a copy of it, and he did. That’s his father, “Freckles” pictured on the album cover and he still to this day is a familiar sight riding in his car about the Smith Tropical Paradise luau grounds. The musical talents and the aloha spirit run deep in the Smith family. I am fortunate to have attended luaus there several times. Here is what Jack Williams of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin wrote about on the inside of the album cover: “Walter J. Smith and his son, Walter Jr. or “Freckles,” as he is better known, and together with William Kaui, have been telling the legends of the
Wailua River since 1946. Your trip up the river one one of his two big boats is one of the most pleasant experiences a visitor can have in Hawaii. The placid river and the green, lush mountains that can be viewed from the boats, make the almost half-hour journey a lasting experience. From the start, when the singers and dancers break into “Lazy Man Hula,” to the end at the Fern Grotto, when the famed “Ke Kali Ne Au,” or Hawaiian Wedding Song is offered, it is a journey into old Hawaii, unequaled.” Most tourists who come
to Kauai and make the boat ride are frankly unprepared for such an experience,
but they leave thrilled by the awesome beauty of the sacred spot that is the
Wailua River. And the music and dancing is so much icing on the cake — a typically Hawaiian-style event. One thing is for sure, you’ll wind up singing with the group before the trip is over. Some of the songs on the album include “Sailing Along the River Wailua”, “Legend of the Sister Rock”, “The Fern Grotto” and “Legend of the Menehune Rock”. It is beautiful music.
This was a time of true aloha on Kauai, led by a family that lived it then and lives it today. I am fortunate to count Kamika Smith as a friend (and he’s a fine runner, too). This album is a rare find (you can also buy it online) and I’m glad to have it. But if it carries more meaning to others, give me a call and perhaps we’ll put it in your hands.

“I watched her go from beautiful, wondrous star and then at the drop of what go low brow and just change character right on the dot,” she said. Others are ready for the stage, too. Issac Worth’s character is Fred Casely. “I am definitely playing a bad guy. I’m an absolutely louse,” he said, smiling. Worth is both an actor and a pro wrestler who goes by “Incredible Chris Wilde.” He and “The Kauai Kid” Noa Kaho‘omana won the Unifty Championship Entertainement tag team title earlier this year and will defend that title on Oahua next Friday, Aug. 2, on Oahu. He loves theater and the wrestling stage and hopes to be able to balance both. “I just burn the candle at both ends,” the 31-year-old said. He’ll be on stage for Chicago on opening night, but miss the second night so he can square off in the ring. “This play is going to be just fantastic. It’s ruckus, it’s raunchy, it’ll be fun, a lot of fun,” he said. Taj Gutierrez plays the jurors while Daphne Sanchez plays Velma Kelly. “I wanted to do work that was done by Bob Fosse,” Gutierrez said. “I love his dance style, it’s very innovative. I love this show. It’s one of my favorites since I was young kid. “I am just very grateful to be in it,” he said. Don’t forget, this is an “After Dark” production, which means it’s not suitable for children. Gutierrez

goes shirtless for the show, other than the suspenders holding up his tight-fitting pants. It doesn’t bother him. “It’s part of theater,” he said with a smile. “You have to do all kinds of different things to be a well-rounded artist.” Sanchez remembers being a keiki and watching Chicago. She loves being Velma Kelly, a Vaudeville star “who gets caught doing something that’s not good.” “No matter where she is, she always has to be the center of attention, so that’s kind of cool,” she said. Sanchez considers herself a singer first and dancer second. “I love her part. Not saying I’m trying to be like the star and center of attention, because that’s what she’s
about,” Sanchez said. “I definitely want to challenge myself to see what it’s like to be Velma.” Sanchez wears a short,
black dress, a bit revealing, for the part. She doesn’t mind. All part of show business and taking on a character’s style.
“I feel very comfortable in my body,” she said. “ am totally OK with what I do in the show.” “Ultimately, it’s a show about love and murder,” Gutierrez said. “In a way, it’s a very cool love story.” Sanchez said it’s funny
to see how the women get away with their crimes. “It’s knowing the people, having the money and just being a celebrity out of it,” she said. “You gotta love a good, dark comedy,” Gutierrez added.
