he first time Helen Turner tried plein air painting on Kauai, a lot of the details went wrong. The Kapaa resident and two friends, who together had dubbed themselves “The Ladies’ Painting Guild,” went past the arboretum at the end of Kuamoo Road, to a little natural pond with water lilies. They brought wine, crackers and Brie cheese, as well as all of their supplies. “So we trudged down there with all of our equipment and that first time, we brought all the wrong equipment and we got bit by mosquitoes, and we got frustrated,” Turner said. “But we kept doing it and the more we did it, the better we got.” As they continued their adventures, Turner said the ladies were more focused on their art than they were on their wine and cheese. “We didn’t have time to eat or drink, we were too much into the scene,” Turner said. That was five years ago.

Since then, Turner’s two companions have moved back to the Mainland and now she carries on the traditions of The Ladies’ Painting Guild with new friends. She takes people into Kauai on plein air painting excursions, usually one or two a week. “I just continued to go and now I take people out and teach,” Turner said. “If I don’t have teaching, I wouldn’t go out as much, so I still get to

go out and it’s good.” She also teaches life drawing for the Kauai Association of Artists, but she said she’s more of a facilitator than an actual teacher in that instance. “I make sure the whole thing comes off,” Turner said. “I hire the model and make sure the room is open, get the snacks, and basically be the hostess.” SEE TURNER, PAGE 6

re you up to the challenge of the Hunter’s Special — four eggs, smoked meat, Spam, Portuguese sausage, and two scoops rice — at Unko’s Kitchen in Hanapepe? “That and the Beef Stew Plate are our hot sellers,” said Manuel Cabral, whose family and friends run Unko’s Kitchen in Hanapepe. “This is a family thing. We own and run the place.” Cabral, describing himself as “an ordinary Samoan-Hawaiian man,” has always had a passion for cooking and dreamed of opening a catering business and restaurant. News of his prowess in the kitchen spread across the coconut wireless after

“just cooking a few things for family and friends.” Sharon, his wife, worked for the Hamabata family and the Green Garden restaurant from 1982, he said. “The Hamabata and Arashiro families were the icons of the restaurant business on Kauai,” he said. “Sharon worked for them, and they were my mentors even if I only helped with the trees and the outside.” When Mrs. Sue Hamabata passed, Cabral said he lamented seeing the place close. “Everybody used to come here — breakfast, lunch, and dinner,” he said. “The place was always busy. Sharon said people used to come from

all over for the food, turning dining into a time to catch up with friends and family from the Westside.” Gwen Hamabata became his mentor. “She passed along what she knew,” Cabral said. “Bring in homestyle, local cooking, she said. And consider the people who are working two or three jobs to support their families. They need a place they can bring the kids to and enjoy family time. The young people getting started need a place, too. They don’t have a lot of money, but they DENNIS FUJIMOTO enjoy good food, too. My TGIFR!DAY family and friends who work here all have regular jobs. Gwen Batara and her son Kainoa were wrapping up their breakfast at another table. “I like the pork cutlet,” Kainoa said. “It’s just the right size.”

“You just missed the wave of tourists who were here,” Gwen said. “Now, it’s the people coming out of church. Tom, my husband had the Roast Pork Moco which is a special. I am trying the Taco

Salad for the first time, and I just have to have a to-go box.” Cabral said after working 28 years at Barking Sands, his goal is to see the former location of the Green Gardens flourish. “Gwen always said, ‘You take care of the community; you take care of the island, and they’ll take care of you,’” he said. “We’re trying.” Open Friday evenings from 6-9 for “saimin and other local favorites,” Unko’s Kitchen is also open from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays because “everybody else (has) jobs.” For now, we just open on the weekend when everybody doesn’t work, Cabral said.

READING SIGNS CYNTHIA & ED JUSTUS SPECIAL TO TGIFR!DAY

A

strology: the study of how astronomical events effect humans. Did you know it is quite the American trait to be asked “what’s your sign?” Many are familiar with Western astrology, (e.g. Cynthia – Capricorn; Ed – Cancer) while there are also many familiar with Chinese astrology (e.g. Cynthia – Monkey; Ed – Pig). So, with two completely different formulas that define a person’s notable character traits, with each sign stating something unique, what would happen if you were to overlap these two major astrological philosophies? You

get descriptions downright amazing. Enter French author Suzanne White’s “The New Astrology – A Unique Synthesis of the World’s Great Astrological Systems: The Chinese and Western (With 144 Complete, Personalized Character Readings).” Think about that — 144 different signs. That certainly explains why two people with the same sign can be so different. We were intrigued by this concept of merged signs, so we looked ours up in this wonderfully comprehensive book. Sure enough, “Capricorn-Monkey” Cynthia’s personality was quite accurate, as was “Cancer-Pig” Ed’s. “The New Astrology” not only provides an excellent overview of each of the 144 combo-signs, it also covers topics for each, such as how they relate to profession, compatibility, home and family and love. Naturally,

many would be curious to not only look themselves up in this book, but also to look up their boss, wife, husband, family, friends, future date, etc. just to see what useful inside info they might learn. White’s book proposes a wonderful astrological system, one that seems, in our view, to work better than each system separately. So, whether you are an ardent subscriber of astrology, a casual follower, or that perhaps you find the whole thing rather silly, it’s hard not to be astonished at how well you may find yourself described. ••• Ed and Cynthia Justus are owners of The Bookstore in Hanapepe.

Turner started creating landscape portraits in New York more than 30 years ago, and she works mainly with oil paint and pastel mediums. When she moved to Kauai in the early 1980s and started a family, she took up pastel drawing because it was easy to take breaks to care for her children. “When you have babies, you can’t start something and leave out solvents and wet paint, it’s too toxic,” Turner said. “So I went to pastels because I could stop whenever I wanted and then go back to it.” Recently, though, Turner has returned to oil painting because she’s found that visitors want art that doesn’t have glass on it to take home with them. “With pastels, you have to frame it with glass on it,” Turner said. “With oil

paintings, they can take a little canvas and it’s easier. It’s also easier to mail.” Landscapes are Turner’s passion. “I love landscapes. It’s so beautiful,” Turner said. “You remember that day you spent painting, that beautiful day, and you can hear the sounds and it’s special?” Her goal, she said, is to capture Kauai’s rustic and wild beauty before it becomes overcrowded. “I want it documented as much as I can before you can’t go down to the beach without condos all the way to the sand and all the people,” Turner said. “I try to paint the places that are still a little bit wild and hard to get to, like Polihale.” Though she’s a veteran artist in various methods and mediums, Turner is finding ways to explore and her newest endeavor is live event painting. “It’s plein air painting with people,” she said. “So

about a month ago, I had a bride contact me and I said sure, I’ll do a live painting of your wedding.” She used pastels and ended up drawing the ceremony and the reception. “It was really fun and they treated me like a rock star,” Turner said. “And I was able to finish the painting the next day and they could take it home with them.” Turner’s artwork is displayed at Aloha Paradise Gallery in Waimea and decorates the walls at Kauai Business Services in Lihue. But her work is mainly for sale online at www.helenturner.com. That’s where people can contact Turner for plein air lessons as well. “A lot of times the lessons are really just having an experience painting outside in Kauai,” Turner said. “I gently guide and it’s relaxing, but it’s not so much about the finished piece as the enjoyment of making it.”
