KCA’s 40th season ends Sunday with Galliard String Quartet

he Kauai Concert Association wraps up its 40th concert season Sunday with a performance by the Galliard String Quartet & Friends. The Galliard String Quartet, part of the Chamber Music Hawaii and considered Hawaii’s premier string quartet, performs programs including the works of such favorite composers as Mozart, Hayden, Beethoven, Schubert and Brahms. Jason Blake, president of KCA, said he is proud to host GSQ — Hawaii’s most constant ensemble to earn world renown status. “Additionally, they are adding two strings to the concert so it will actually be a sextet and they are playing two pieces rarely seen in Hawaii, and especially not on Kauai, as they are arranged for six strings,” he said. Blake said GSQ is also beloved for their first album “Songs of Liliuokalani,” a repertoire of songs written by Queen Liliuokalani, including “Aloha ‘Oe,” “Puia Ka Nahele,” the “Queen’s Prayer,” and many more. On Sunday, the group will perform Johannes Brahms’“Sextet No. 1,” Franz Schubert’s “Quintet” and selections from “Songs of Liliuokalani.”

The concert begins at 4 p.m. at the Kauai Community College Performing Arts Center in Puhi. “Music of the masters is the Galliard’s forte, but the group’s repertoire also includes Strauss waltzes, romantic interludes, light classics, Hawaiian music, popular music, and more,” states their website. Blake called Kauai Concert Association’s 2013/14 season as its “most comprehensive and ambitious” in years, with groups as diverse as The Brasil Guitar Duo to The Nylons. “KCA is entering 2014 as its 40th year of service on the island and felt (like) ending the season with a world-class classical concert, on which the association was founded,” he said. “It was a double-bonus to get Hawaii’s own Galliard to perform here this year and the pieces they are presenting are seldom heard on Kauai or throughout Hawaii, as a professional six-string ensemble is becoming a rarer and rarer jewel. Besides having a booth at Relay for Life on May 3, the restaurant also gives money from food sold during Hanapepe Art Night. “My mom’s really good at making vegetarian food and you don’t even know it’s vegetarian,” says Lauama, a

partner and general manager. Lauama’s mother contributed the vegetarian recipes from her family collection as well as delicious desserts such as the Tropical Chiffon Cream Cheese Square ($5). The Vegetarian Trio ($9), an appetizer that’s large enough for a meal, includes crispy tofu sushi rolls, Asian bulgur meatballs and curried brown rice and diced red bell peppers loaded into lettuce cups. The letters MCS represent the name of the owners, but because everything is made from scratch, it could stand for Major Cooking Skills. On Mondays, Macklin serves Oxtail Soup ($11.95). A knobby bone loaded with succulent chunks of meat floats in a star anise flavored house-made broth; tendon and connective tissue are rendered tender and creamy. Tips of canned bamboo shoots were boiled twice and thinly sliced before they were added along with shittake mushrooms, cabbage and rice noodles. Local ingredients are used whenever possible, even in homemade, non-alcoholic drink specials ($5 with free refills), which include a fizzy P.O.G Spritzer with ginger syrup and fresh rosemary. ‘Rio 2’ dazzling but overloaded

vivid and delightful animated spectacle, “Rio 2” is chock-full of colorful 3-D wonder and jubilant musical numbers set against a tale of family dynamics and environmental dilemmas. The sequel opens with a vibrant New Year’s Eve bash, as partying in the music-filled streets of Rio de Janeiro is punctuated by fireworks bursting above the Christ the Redeemer statue. Supervised by composer John Powell, more emphasis has been placed on the music of this film, which benefits from numbers by artists like Bruno Mars (who also voices the smooth bird Roberto in the film), Janelle Monae and celebrated Brazilian musician Carlinhos Brown. After mating in Brazil in 2011’s “Rio,” rare macaws Blu (Jesse Eisenberg) and Jewel (Anne Hathaway) now have three lively kids who have become accustomed to the same domestication Blu was brought up on in Minnesota. They’re attached to

gadgets like iPods and eat pancakes for breakfast, which irks the raisedin-the-wild Jewel. But the family heads off to

the Amazon rainforest, to Jewel’s delight and Blu’s strife, when they get wind that a tribe of blue macaws may live there and are being pursued by Blu’s past owner and animal lover, Linda (voiced by Leslie Mann), and her husband, Tulio (Rodrigo Santoro). With a few of the quirky supporting characters from the first film in tow — including birds voiced by George Lopez (as frisky toucan Rafael) and Jamie Foxx and will.i.am (as rapping canary-and-cardinal duo Nico and Pedro) — they soar through a dazzling journey to the rainforest, making the often-wasted 3-D effect worth it as we take in the broad scope and graphically layered flair.

Once there, Jewel discovers the large macaw crew is led by her long-lost father (Andy Garcia), who is unimpressed with his daughter’s choice of a mate. He can’t help but roll his eyes over Blu’s use of a GPS or a Swiss Army kit rather than the use of his own sharp beak. But their classic in-law banter is sublimely comical.

Brazilian native writer-director Carlos Saldanha and Don Rhymer returned to pen the story. But they try too hard to make up for the minimalist plot of the original and drown in subplots: Blu battles with Jewel over staying in the wild versus returning to the city; Linda and Tulio clash with a few bad guys threatening to cut down the

rainforest (the film’s eco push); and Blu’s old rival, Niguel (Jemaine Clement of “Flight of the Conchords”), pops up with a beautiful yet poisonous neon pink and purple frog (an angelic and cutesy Kristin Chenoweth) plotting revenge. Phew! And then there are the moments when characters break out into song. Niguel’s hotshot rendition of Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive” seems a little ill-set when he really should be crooning a sinister track a la Ursula’s “Poor Unfortunate Souls” in “The Little Mermaid.” The sweet voice of Hathaway shines with her solo lullaby. But it’s Chenoweth’s Broadway-like delivery that trumps all when she belts out an anthem on forbidden love. Though the original songs here are whimsical and fun, few are irresistible. With so much going on, it’s a wonder this kids’ movie is only five minutes longer than the original. But for the music and brilliantly picturesque look, it’s worth the 3-D ticket.

atercolor and oil painting workshops, an orchid array of more than 250 flowering plants, special gallery displays, world-class music, food and entertainment for all ages are on tap for the eighth annual Orchid and Art Festival in Hanapepe this weekend. At the heart of the festival: the coveted orchid. “The orchid is the second most frequently purchased plant in the world next to the poinsettia,” said Ada Koene, spokesperson for the Garden Island Orchid Society. The festival is being held at various locations in Hanapepe with many of the events, such as the free Makana concert, on the main stage at the Hawaiian Congregational Church. “I’m passionate about Kauai,” said Makana, who has performed twice at the White House, most recently for the Asia Pacific Economic Alliance. “The island affects me profoundly. When I would visit as a child, I would feel like it was the last place before the unknown.” The concert will be 3 -4 p.m. Saturday. Other musical acts will include the Joyful Noise Taiko Drummers, Paul Togioka, Aowl Own and ukulele talent Brittni Paiva. Massage students will be offering their services. Children’s musical and gymnastic activities will be offered as well, by Kindermusik. A 90-minute town walk with great views and stories of Hanapepe starting at the Tea Room at Storybook Theatre will be Saturday. There will even be a rooster crowing contest. The event is sponsored by the Hanapepe Economic Alliance, the Hawaii Tourism Authority and Kauai festivals and events. Events are free with the exception of select workshops. Times are from 1 to 9 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Most events occur in at the Hawaiian Congregational Church. The Spring Fantasy Orchid Show will be showcased at the United Church of Christ.
