AN INVESTMENT IN YOUTH, COMMUNITY Kauai Island Brewing Co. plans fundraiser on Wednesday

K

auai Island Brewing Co. in Port Allen is planning a day of music, food and liquids to benefit public schools and a nonprofit on Kauai. On Wednesday, Dec. 30, the world’s westernmost brewery will donate proceeds to help the island’s education system and United Way and “enrich the generations to come.”

“This event is to invest back into our youth and community to build leadership, confidence and character for the bright future of Kauai,” said event coordinator Chris Pimienta, who handles a variety of tasks at the brewery. He said while schools are filled with hard-working teachers and staff and classrooms are packed with

students who want to learn and are doing well, Kauai Island Brewing Co. wants to do what it can so educators and students have what they need to be their best. “According to The Garden Island, most of our public schools fall into the Continuous Improvement category for school rankings with only one school receiving the highest

WELCOMING 2016 Fireworks show on New Year’s Eve POIPU — The Poipu Beach Resort Association will host its annual New Year’s Eve Celebration on Thursday, Dec. 31 and is open to the public. “This is our fifth year. It’s probably been going on for about 15 years, but we as a resort association took it over for the past five years,” said Jody Kjeldsen, Poipu Beach Resort Association executive director. “Prior to us, it was put on by Sheraton Kauai.” The event will consist of food trucks, a snack bar fundraiser hosted by Koloa Elementary School, a movie in the park (Disney Channel Original Movie “Descendants”) and will end with a fireworks show. The movie and the fireworks are free. “This is one of the few

NICK CELARIO TGIFR!DAY

events for people to enjoy fireworks,” Kjeldsen said. “There’s no other event that offers a free display of fireworks coupled with a movie and or music. “We just wanted to give back to the community by offering this event,” she added. The County of Kauai, the Office of Economic Development, and the Hawaii Tourism Authority provide some grant funding to help cover costs. Hotels and businesses along Kauai’s South Shore also donated to help keep the event free. Set up will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The New Year’s Eve affair will begin 5 p.m. The movie will start at 7 p.m. and the fireworks display will kick off 8:45 p.m. Kjeldsen said because the event is family-friendly,

STEVENSON’S sushi & spirits alcohol is not permitted. Because of the loss of tombolo, or sand spit, the fireworks will be launched from the Keiki Lagoon instead of Nukumoi Point. J&M Displays will provide pyrotechnics and security. “Because we have to launch from the Keiki Lagoon, it requires us to close a portion of Poipu Beach Park,” Kjeldsen said. “It will be closed all day. We have to put up the barriers the night before.” From morning of Dec. 31 to the morning of Jan. 1, the portion of Poipu Beach Park closest to the Keiki Lagoons will be closed. Additional parking will be available at Mano Kalanipo Park. Information: Kjeldsen, 7427444. info@poipubeach.org.

LET ‘MAGIC’ SIMPLIFY YOUR LIFE CYNTHIA & ED JUSTUS SPECIAL TO TGIFR!DAY

H

appy Holidays! You’ve unwrapped all your gifts and you are surrounded by lots of new stuff! Now what? In these wonderfully convenient times we live in it is very easy to accumulate lots of stuff. Face it! We are all stuff magnets to varying degrees! And now, thanks to the holiday season, we have more stuff! For many of us, it can be hard to begin to take on the seemingly impossible task of deciding what to let go of, or even if you want

to, which can easily grow into a pile of “I’ll get to this sometime” which never seems to come. Just seeing it or even thinking about it can bring stress, or worse … those feelings of inadequacy for not doing what the mythical “responsible adult” would do. Enter Marie Kondo’s three-million sold book, “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing.” This small book (5 x 7 inches) which has no illustrations, no graphs, no charts, no worksheets, and is only text, has helped millions to free themselves of the burden of stuff that never seems to go away. Being from Japan and based in efficient Japanese philosophy, her simple methods have helped people to clear the clutter for

good! The best part is the changes in their personal life have been positively and utterly profound. What better time of year to start this “magic” than the New Year? What a great New Year’s resolution! Freeing ourselves from our clutter! How many times have we said that? With this book we can fulfill that resolution, be free of our clutter, and make room in our homes and our lives for the one important thing that really matters —
