A day to share, celebrate
I
t is an event that only happens once a year, so for members of Halau Ka Lei Mokihana o Leinaala, their annual Hoike is a special time for sharing and celebration. “Hoike basically means ‌ to showcase, to show off, or put on display, so this is really the halau’s recital of the year,â€? said Leina‘ala Pavao Jardin, kumu hula of Halau Ka Lei Mokihana o Leinaala. “This is what the students have studied for the past year, and unfortunately, in one night, we can’t share everything, but
we highlight some of the different things we have done throughout the year and celebrate some of the accomplishments by my students as far as Merrie Monarch and the Queen Liliuokalani Keiki Hula competition — we celebrate that and share the performances live that evening. Among the first performances scheduled for the Hoike on Saturday at the Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall is a hula kahiko, called “Aloha Ka Luna O Keolewa, which was written
by Westside native Keao NeSmith and performed by the halau’s wahine dancers at the Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo. The event will also highlight performances from the Queen Liliuokalani Keiki Hula competition in August, where Jardin’s halau danced to a mele (song) called “Kamawailualani, the ancient name of Kauai island, which was written by Manu Boyd. “At each Hoike, we tend to have a lot of visitors in the audience, and what I want them to remember

The special, musical guests at the Hoike will include Kauai group Na Molokama, consisting of Fred Aki, Bradford Nelmida, Kahanu Smith, Alberto Genovia and Pali Carbonel, and Hilo native Kuana Torres Kahele, a Na Hoku Hanohano Award winning artist. She was 15 years old when she started as a dishwasher. Five years later, she moved to Las Vegas and opened Josselin’s 808 Restaurant at Cesar’s

REVIEW THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER TODD MCCARTHY
‘Alexander’ a snappy, benign comedy
G
iven its premise, “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” could have been a lot more horrible and no good than it is. In fact, at a quick 82 minutes, this straight-arrow family comedy about a day when misfortune comes to visit and stays awhile goes down relatively painlessly if one considers the repetitive nature of the pranks and pitfalls and the predictable message about family togetherness prevailing over adversity; just think, gang, we could be living in Syria. Thirty-two-page children’s books with 18-syllable titles that are basically about one thing aren’t the easiest properties to adapt into feature-length scripts, which may be why it took 42 years for someone to figure out how to handle Judith Viorst’s perennial, which has sold more than four million cop-
ies since its publication in 1972 and has spawned three sequels, the latest published this year. Screenwriter Rob Lieber’s way of filling out the conceit to feature-length running time is to have atrocious things happen not only to the 11-year-old title character but to his entire family and spread the calamities across two days. If this just seems like too much negativity to contemplate, or too close to real life, this exercise in schadenfreude is, in the event, surprisingly good-natured and, under Miguel Arteta’s fleet direction, seemingly over in the snap of a finger. “The day before” the big day in question, the agreeable Alexander (open-faced Australian Ed Oxenbould) receives a mighty blow upon learning that the most pop-
ular kid in school is throwing a party the next night at the same time as his own 12th birthday party, meaning that no one, including the girl he likes, will come to his bash. Also on tap the next day: His unemployed dad Ben (Steve Carell) has a big job interview with a video gaming company, mom Kelly (Jennifer Garner) is overseeing a celebrity book reading event for her hard-to-please boss, teen brother Anthony (Dylan Minnette) is chauffeuring snooty girlfriend Celia (Bella Thorne) to the junior prom provided he passes his driver’s test, and sister Emily (Kerris Dorsey) is starring in a school production of “Peter Pan.” Plus the baby of the family, Trevor (Elise and Zoey Vargas), can be counted upon to continue crying a lot. The worst day begins with everyone waking up late.
while the “Peter Pan” misadventures are similarly low-voltage. On the other hand, the interplay between Ben and the gamer geeks is not unamusing, even if Ben’s tolerance for agreeably filling the role of a “fommy” (father-mommy) would seem to exceed ordinary limits. The homily-laden wrap-up, stressing the upside of bad days, is beset by a PG-lewd book Alexander is the recipient enough to make you hold misprint, and the lack of a of the only good news: The your nose, but it only lasts popular kid has chicken pox, baby sitter forces Ben to take a moment. baby Trevor along to meet so Alexander’s bash is back The cast is uniformly on full steam. The spirit of Queen Emma returns
I
t’s that time of year again for the Queen Emma festival – a fun-filled free event celebrating Hawaii’s beloved Queen and her journey to the Kokee upland and Kilohana vista in 1871. For the 26th straight year, live music will fill the Kanaloahuluhulu Meadow beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday to kick off the culturally authentic and popular event. “There’s not many festivals in the state for Queen Emma,” said coordinator Michelle Hookano. At noon, as Nick Castillo
and Friends sing “Wahine Ui” composed for the festival occasion, Helen Lahapa Santiago, the woman cast to play Queen Emma, will ride into the Meadow accompanied by guide Kaluahi, Hawaiian hunter and cowboy who guided the royal horseback party over rough slippery terrain. Santiago, general manager at Kalapaki Joe’s in Waimea, recalled when she was selected for the role. “It’s a great honor. I had just been thinking about and wondering how people get selected. A couple
weeks later the Queen Emma committee came into the restaurant and a waitress said the people at the table wanted to see me,” Santiago said. “One of them told me she had two dreams about me and knew I was the one who should be this year’s Queen Emma.” Santiago called it a big surprise. “I got teary-eyed. I’ve been going to the festival since 1995 and I love it,” she said. Santiago’s daughter, Niryanne Kanaehoikealaokapuakehauikauilani Kauanui-Santiago, will act as her Lady in Waiting in the enactment of the return of Queen Emma to the mountains. The monarch in the late 1800s made the journey up from her Lawai beach house with over 100 companions. Along the way, she called for her court chanter to offer oli— great poems

Halau from across Hawaii and one from Japan will share gifts of chant and dance until 4 p.m. There will also be exhibits and craft tables at the site. The festival is co-sponsored by the Hawaii Tourism Authority and the County of Kauai, and
other community partners and businesses. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Kokee State Park. It is a smoke-, alcohol-, and pet-free event. Parking is limited so carpooling is recommended. Info: 335-9975 or www. kokee.org

he Women Artists of Kauai will be having a preview exhibit at the YWCA Women’s Center in Lihue beginning today through Nov. 12. Artwork from each of the 13 artists participating in their third annual Open Studio Tour coming up in November will be on display. The YWCA Women’s Center is at 4410 Hardy Street in Lihue. on sale with 20 percent of the proceeds to benefit the YWCA’s programs for women and families. “While attending the grand opening of the YWCA Women’s Center earlier this year, Renae Hamilton, executive director of YWCA Kauai, extended a warm invitation for our women’s art group to show there some day,” said Marionette Taboniar, Coordinator for Women Artists of Kauai. “So naturally when I started planning the preview exhibit for our upcoming studio tour, I de-
cided to take Renae up on the offer. It is such a good and natural fit. We are so excited about this wonderful honor and opportunity to contribute to the YWCA’s programs for women and children, and we look forward to meeting the public at our artist’s reception on Oct. 30.” The Women Artists of Kauai who will be participating include Anna Skaradzinska, Marionette Taboniar, Patrice Pendarvis, Caylin Spear, Debbie Barklow, Helen Turner, Leslie Hagen, Jennifer Rutt, Suzy Staulz, Keani Andrade, Ibbie White Alshamma, Donia Lilly and Dawn Lundquist. Another event coming up by the Women Artists of Kauai and partnered with ReSource for Christian Spirituality is a fine art festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 18 at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church.
People will have the opportunity to meet and talk story with the artists.
