his story was told to me by a man who claimed this happened when he was young. According to him, those that once knew how to call the spirits of their dead ancestors have all passed on and things like this don’t happened any more. Nevertheless, fishermen today will rarely share their fishing spots, and may sometimes even mislead those who ask to confuse those who may be jealous. There was once family of fishermen who lived on the flats of Ha‘ena. The father was known as the best fisherman in the region. He kept to himself and worked hard to provide for his large ‘ohana. He knew offshore

reefs well and taught his sons the skills to acquire a bounty from the sea, including fish, lobsters, octopus and seaweed. He also taught them to catch fish by hand, net and spear, and reminded them only to take what was needed, allowing the smaller fish to reproduce and provide for the future. Occasionally, when large schools of fish would come ashore, the old fisherman would organize a hukilau. The whole community was called to help chase the fish into the net and drag it ashore, and there would be enough fish for all to feast. As neighbors noticed the prosperity of the fishing family, they grew jealous and

Suddenly, someone grabbed the young man’s bag from behind. He gripped the sack as tightly as he could, leaning forward to keep from losing the fish. The unseen thief pulled hard but the fisherman yanked back, falling forward to his knees. Noticing the splashing and shouts, the brother overlooking Ha‘ena, whisper- and father quickly waded to longed to have fresh fish to the young man’s aid. eat every night. As the two boys caught their breath, they turned their wide eyes to their father and asked what the creature was. “It is a spirit, a devil, called by jealous people to steal our catch,” the father told them calmly. “There are people, through sorcery, that can call their ancestors to aid them. Sometimes it is for good and sometimes for evil. “You must never tell anyone where we will be fishing so that the devils would not know where we are.” From that day, the fishermen kept their secrets. ••• Chris Fayé is an author, artist and 6th generation kama’aina and currently the director of Hui o Laka (Koke’e Natural History Museum)

KUKUI‘ULA MARKET

Happy Hour Daily 2 - 5 p.m.

A LOCAL KAUAI SHOPPING FAVORITE AT POIPU BEACH A hidden gem on the south shore, tucked into one of the remaining small shopping centers close to Poipu rentals and Kauai Resorts, is the historical Kukui‘ula Market, owned and operated by the Kuribayashi family for 60 years. The market is one of the only two remaining family owned grocery stores on Kauai and its unique products sets itself apart from all stores on the island. Owners, Paul and Terry, take pride in supporting local businesses and stock the shelves with Kauai Made products- from Kauai Juice hot sauces to soaps and bug spray. The market also offers organic products, local foods and desserts,

home-made lunches and salad bar, local grass fed beef, fish and shrimp grown and caught locally, and a large variety of vegan and gluten-free foods. Paul cuts all the beef and the lunches are made before dawn by Terry. A few of the new delicacies include “overnight oatmeal”, chia seed yogurts, lavender lemonade and even a detox drink that is made with fruit and vegetables. Visit their Juice Bar, Anake’s, a kiosk located in the store serving local fruit smoothies and acaia bowls. Grab a poke bowl or roll from Makai Sushi. And, what trip to Kauai isn’t complete without some shave ice- a shave ice truck, Loco Coco, is the newest addition to the mouthwatering options that you will find at Kukui‘ula Market.

Your One Stop for Adventure while on Kauai.

Outfitters Kauai has been an innovative adventure company since they first opened their doors in 1988. First on the action menu was Ocean Kayaking along the majestic Na Pali Coast during the summer months and Ocean Kayaking on the South Shore from Poipu to Glass Beach during the winter months while the amazing Humpback Whales are around. For a fun workout

and way to see a special waterfall, try their Wailua River Jungle Waterfall Kayak Trek. The Wailua River is famous for its gorgeous scenery and history rich past. For something a little easier try the guided tour on the Hule’ia River. Kayak one way upstream with the wind to your back, hike to a fun rope swing and get a motor boat ride back down the river at the end of the tour. Another cool way to see the Hule’ia River and some great jungle hiking is on their Stand Up Paddle tours. In 1994 they began their Waimea Canyon Bicycle Downhill Tour, an adventure unique to Outfitters Kauai

only. In 2003, Outfitters Kauai’s owner, Rick Haviland, inspired by a National Geographic article about canopy tours in Costa Rica, constructed and opened Kauai’s first zipline. They now have three zipline course options covering beginning, intermediate and advanced. Their diverse course is on beautiful Kipu Ranch, 4000 acres of diverse terrain with scenery made famous in movies like Jurassic Park, Pirates of the Caribbean, Indiana Jones and the Descendants to name a few. For the ultimate family day,

Outfitters Kauai offers a magical combination tour called the Kipu Ranch Zipline Safari. This tour combines kayaking, hiking, Ziplining, movie tour information, lunch, swimming and some of the best photo opportunities on the island. Whatever your interests or activity level, Outfitters Kauai will have something for you and your family.
