Multi-level, multi-family housing has emerged as a natural response to the demand for shelter
in dense urban areas - to maximize the number of living units possible in the given land. The
concept of group housing despite its obvious benefits of shared space and services, comes
with its own inherent issues associated with density such as space constraint, loss of privacy,
identity, freedom, flexibility, sense of belonging, relationship with the ground and other
socio-cultural dynamics. The fact that the user group is speculative and diversified in terms
of needs and aspirations adds to the challenges in designing group housing.
