BLAME IT ON ALESSANDRO MICHELE. AFTER ALL, MOST FASHION WORLD WAVES CAN BE TRACED IN SOME WAY BACK TO THE MAXIMALIST
Times – and icons – are a changin’. And where better to spot the patterns than afoot the red carpet, where many of our game-changers tread? Grazia Fashion Editor Sophie Bew investigates the stars’ new strain of self-expression…
magician since his monumental shakeover at Gucci just a year ago. His AW15 collection – brimming with metallic midis, beanies and overblown ruffles and bows – sent a fully loaded eclecticism onto our radars. It was a burst of energy that shook up fashion’s recent obsession with manicured minimalism and normcore purity. Of course, it was only a matter of time before this catwalk shift trickled down to the wardrobes and bodies of real women and the A-listers. Behind the catwalk’s changing climates, there’s always a social and political status quo in flux, too. In Hollywood, award ceremonies have been platforms to a very vocal call to arms – women like Patricia Arquette, Emma Watson and Jennifer Lawrence have taken to the public stage to discuss the gender wage gap, while actors like Cate Blanchett, Kristen Stewart and Scarlett Johansson have all lashed out at the inane and sexist red carpet questioning they receive that their male co-stars do not. Comperes Amy Schumer and Tina Fey have lent explicit commentary on such topics at the ceremonies themselves. Beside sexism, the #OscarsSoWhite furore this year is a demonstration of rosie Jennifer the internet’s new-found voice – not to mention the very real and urgent need J-Law in a silver Galvan slip dress and Rosie for more diverse representation of today’s Huntingon-Whitely in Gucci ruffles world. What we’re left with now is a new and vibrant kind of icon – men and women revolutionising staid and tired stereotypes. The notion of the Real Woman has, thankfully, undergone a little work – namely by the type of superhuman we typically look up to as “perfect.” Need I mention Jennifer Lawrence’s tumble as she collected her Oscar? Or Beyoncé’s jubilant celebration of her Southern state-bred roots in new hit Formation, where she waxes lyrical on the joys of “baby hair and afros” and a “negro nose with Jackson Five nostrils.” As we experience an ever-global and connected world, what we need now are icons who can show us something real. We need a multitude of voices to be heard within the polyphonic conversation that the internet has enabled. The fashion world has weighed in – in somewhat less radical terms – but to the Dakota alicia extent that a statement on the catwalk can. From street casting to – the beginnings Dakota Johnson in Saint Laurent by Hedi Slimane of – racial diversity and “gender-fluid” and Alicia Vikander in custom-made Louis Vuitton
icons across campaigns – Jaden Smith was described as such by Nicolas Ghesquière in the latest Louis Vuitton campaign. Red carpet fashion has followed suit, with stars appearing in up-and-coming designers – they are no longer beholden to the standard issue ball gown from the canon of go-to designers. Emma Watson expresses her modern sensibilities via key, contemporary brands like Proenza Schouler, Rodarte and Christopher Kane. Emma Stone’s breath-of-fresh-air appeal announces itself via her dry wit, dirty laugh and a generous helping of easy, youthful Chloé and Erdem looks. Fairy-tale frocks no longer form our language, and the same can be said of hair and beauty – cue the undone, bare beauty look so loved on Sienna Miller and Dakota Johnson. More than ever, the power of personality is undeniable and, before you’ve even placed your bets on a new favourite, the big boy brands have already raised the stakes. Ambassadorial relationships like J-Law x Dior and Alicia Vikander for Louis Vuitton have made red carpet dressing fascinating, at least in the varying degrees of predictability it determines. Will J-Law wear Dior to the Oscars? Probably. But when an Haute Couture atelier makes a bespoke gown for one of Tinseltown’s most-talked about figures, anything is possible. And exciting. And why is it so important to dress these wondrous women? Because, to a certain extent, these stars act as an intermediary between the catwalk and the customer. Dakota Johnson will catch the eye of a non-fashion insider in a mustard yellow Gucci gown, prim and librarian-esque in its necktie and corsage. Fashionistas meanwhile, will nod knowingly at the reference. It’s been called “styling over design,” but what Alessandro Michele has really offered us at Gucci – via his mismatched separates and attic-find fancies – is eclecticism and personalisation. He puts the onus on the woman inside the dress – all by means of a very buyable collection, no less. Thank you, Alessandro, for making imperfections cool – it’s about fashion caught up with the real world. 13

Hedi Slimane’s latest looks saw models in furs, leather, metallics, and leopard prints storm the catwalk
Was this the grand finale for Saint Laurent’s Creative Director?
ROCK LUXE AT SAINT LAURENT 16
WHILE IT CAME AS A SURPRISE WHEN SAINT LAURENT’S CREATIVE DIRECTOR, HEDI SLIMANE, ANNOUNCED HE WOULD stage half of his women’s and the full men’s collection for AW16 off-site from Fashion Month venues, his choice of destination wasn’t at all. The famed designer opted for the rock capital of the world and his current residence, Los Angeles, to hold his show at the Art Deco-inspired Hollywood Palladium. For the Saint Laurent show on 10 February, the FROW saw rock royalty including icons Courtney Love and Joan Jett – who performed at the afterparty – and A-listers that dressed like they were or wanted to be, stepping onto the black carpet. Cue one Jessica Alba, who stood out from the rest of the glitterclad celebs in a stunning gold slip and black leather jacket. Complemented with unbrushed, unruly hair, the actress looked like she’d just finished a lengthy set at an underground gig. Not to be outdone, Miranda Kerr looked like a lead singer’s muse in a skin tight, chic black dress, jewelled choker, and oversized leopard print coat. A selection of the It crowd were also in attendance for The Palladium Collection XXII viewing – Bieber with skateboard in hand, in-demand model Lucky Blue Smith, and the biggest fanboy of menswear, Mark Ronson,
looking dapper – as always – in a pink blazer and “matching” yellow socks. Dylan Lee, who as Grazia reported appeared in Hedi’s recent video portrait, was also there with mum Pamela Anderson as his date for the evening. Black jeans and even blacker leather pants could have been the required uniform of guests. Yet while such a crowd would turn out nonetheless for a Slimane spectacular, we wonder whether they also wanted to be a part of fashion history, entitled

“Hedi’s last show at Saint Laurent.” At the helm of the fashion house from 1996 to 2000, after which he did a seven-year stint at Dior and also departed to pursue photography, the creative rejoined YSL in 2012. This collection, his 12th for the label, was praised, as per. Velvet
tuxedo jackets of jet black, maroon and blood red in super-slim cuts made the extremely thin models – all looking quite broody as if hardcore band members chasing the rock god dream – appear even slimmer. The jackets were paired with wide-brimmed hats and slightly flared trousers. Silk scarves were the prominent accessory for menswear, while models donned a simple tiara for the womenswear collection. It was all very glam, minus the swapping of stilettos for boots. While the Creative Director has at times been drawn to surf culture for inspiration – last year’s collections saw palm tree and floral jackets, and even a rainbow singlet – Hedi Slimane this season opted mostly for golds, silvers, bronzes and naturals for slips and pussy-bow blouses, and a lot of blacks – many, many, blacks – for all attire. ~A couple of leopard-print garments were thrown into the mix for good rock ’n’ roll measure. So, after seeing the Saint Laurent show in all its glory, Jessica Alba most definitely can be excused for her outof-character outfit. We can relate – as the last look left the catwalk, Grazia had fallen for the latest Slimane offering so hard that we immediately started hunting for maroon velvet jackets, and pulled out our slips and rocker boots. Oh Hedi, please stay!

10 HOT STORIES AFTER SENDING THE FASH PACK INTO A FRENZY WHEN THEY CLOSED THE VALENTINO AW15 show in Paris last year, Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson stepped back into character as Derek Zoolander and Hansel for the grand finale of their promo tour. Fashion powerhouse Anna Wintour turned up to show her support for the fashionmeets-film event, in addition to playing a cameo role in the cult classic herself. KATY PERRY AND ORLANDO BLOOM FIRST SPARKED A FRENZY OF RUMOURS WHEN THEY WERE SEEN GETTING COSY at the Weinstein Company’s Golden Globes afterparty in January. Their relationship was reported to be purely platonic. Now, the pair snubbed any pretences of this being just a friendship as they publicly shared a kiss at an Adele concert at The Wiltern in Los Angeles last Friday night. Katy and Orlando were joined by Robbie Williams, Tom Hanks, Emma Stone, Jennifer Lawrence and Woody Harrelson, who were also seen at the starstudded event. The pair made no attempt to hide their feelings, despite the Teenage Dream singer’s former flame, John Mayer, also being in the crowd with a mystery brunette in tow. Fortunately the pair narrowly missed each other, saving both from an awkward encounter as they made their way to the sold-out event. The pair have rarely been spotted apart since the Golden Globes. Just two days later, they both attended the Stella McCartney Autumn 2016 presentation, and also spent the evening together at Orlando’s manager’s birthday bash, where

they celebrated with their famous friends including Jennifer Aniston and Jason Bateman. The actor soon cemented their blossoming relationship by inviting the singer to join him and his son Flynn to attend a children’s birthday party at the home of Robert Downey Jr. Reportedly, the couple spent the whole day together, and Katy was said to have looked as if she was enjoying the festivities. The Pirates of The Caribbean star, who
split with his supermodel wife, Miranda Kerr in October 2013, has recently been linked to stylist Chloe Bartoli and Brazilian model Luisa Morales. Perry, who ended her relationship to Russell Brand in December 2011 after just four months of marriage, was seen with her on and off ex-boyfriend John Mayer in the early hours of New Year’s Eve. It’s safe to say, from her previous paramours, the Firework singer has a taste for the tall, dark, and handsome types. In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Katy revealed what she goes for in a partner. “I look for the same characteristics: a sense of humour – someone who makes me laugh off the charts – someone who is sensitive, someone who loves and understands music, and who is really smart.” The singer admitted that men are often intimidated by her. “Yes, sometimes it’s tough being a ‘boss lady.’ I’m looking for someone who’s inspired and could be inspiring with me.” With Orlando’s previous track record, and his own Hollywood career, it doesn’t appear that he will be scared off easily. We hope their relationship continues to bloom! 19

Although the International Woolmark Prize for womenswear was eventually won by Teatum Jones from the British Isles, Yago acknowledged the boost the competition gave Taller Marmo

International Woolmark Prize womenswear final held in New York last week. Having won the India, Pakistan and Middle East regional final in Dubai last year, Taller Marmo presented a collection to a revered panel of judges including André Leon Talley, Editor-At-Large of US Vogue; Thakoon Panichgul, Chief Creative Officer of Thakoon; and Stuart McCullough, Managing Director of The Woolmark Company. The Dubai-based duo competed against J Koo representing Asia, Bianca Spender from Australia, Teatum Jones from the British Isles, and Tanya Taylor for the USA. Speaking to Grazia from New York at the final, Yago revealed, “Our challenge from The Woolmark Company was to innovate with wool, so we worked together with fabric manufacturers, artisans, and jewellery makers in Italy for our final collection. Our aim for the competition was to build wool around the Taller Marmo world that’s full of multiple journeys, historical references and Italian tailoring mixed with Arabic silhouettes. We wanted to give wool a sense of luxury.” He explained, “The collection was inspired by depictions of Cleopatra through fashion, film and popular culture. Kanye is keen to keep the sports brand collabs in the family
is taking aim at athleisure powerhouse Puma. Us Weekly broke the news that Kylie Jenner reportedly signed a seven-figure contract with the sneaker brand of which Rihanna is Creative Director. Kayne’s half-sister-in-law, the pout behind the sold-out LipKits, has been a longtime fan of Puma, wearing Solange X Puma kicks back in 2014, and has been spotted donning their active wear and cult Eskiva sneakers in October and December respectively. However, any allegiance between Puma and the Keeping up With The Kardashians star is unlikely to materialise thanks to a Twitter tirade by the T.L.O.P. singer who hit out at the brand, ranting, “1,000 per cent there will never be a Kylie Puma anything. That’s on my family! 1,000 per cent Kylie is on Yeezy team! Puma we gone give you your measly million dollars back! Never try to divide the family!” It’s possible that the milliondollar-plus contract was a Kanyecreated publicity stunt, as the blowup came just a day before his Yeezy 3 collection dropped at Madison Square Garden and to 20 million viewers through a livestream. Yet it seems that the rapper has his sights set on a collab that will trump his current athletic wear allegiance with Adidas, vying for hyper-luxury French brand, Hermès. He told guests at his Season 3 show, “My dream, I told Anna Wintour this backstage, is to be the Creative Director of Hermès. I just want to bring as much beauty to the world as possible.”
This is the last time we’ll see Kylie in Puma if Kanye has his way

Above: Rihanna cast Bella and Gigi Hadid in her Fenty X Puma debut
Naomi Campbell backstage showing her support
WITH JEREMY SCOTT ON THE FROW, NAOMI CAMPBELL BACKSTAGE, AND GIGI AND BELLA HADID ON THE RUNWAY, RIHANNA was clearly taking no chances when it came to her New York Fashion Week debut as Creative Director of Puma. Turning the catwalk at 23 Wall Morgan House into an arctic urban forest for the Fenty X Puma show, guests including Anna Wintour, comedian Chris Rock, and rapper Travis Scott were wowed with a procession of supersized sportswear silhouettes, badass bomber jackets, and sassed-up basketball shorts in a resolutely monochrome colour palette. The Puma 22
logo was reimagined in gothic script, and lace-up jumpsuits were styled to show just a sliver of skin. With Rihanna for River Island – the high street collab she dropped in 2013 – serving as the warm-up act, it’s clear that working alongside Raf Simons as the face of Dior’s Secret Garden campaign has clearly influenced her satorial signature since her return to the catwalk seems altogether more polished and considered. Intentionally genderless, Rihanna’s aim was to “challenge traditional male and female silhouettes and blur the lines between genders that are often times too rigid for her fashion tastes.”
Make-up mastermind Pat McGrath created glowing natural skin with ultramatte black lips as the feisty focal point, and Gigi and Bella’s barnets were given an “arctic chill,” courtesty of Yusef Williams, Rihanna’s longtime hairstylist. “What a legend,” Gigi remarked of Rihanna after the event. “So blown away by this collection and show. Thank you for making me a part of this night – you are everything.” After the show, Rihanna held a private afterparty at Up & Down club, where her guests included Naomi Campbell, Travis Scott, Tyga and Kylie Jenner. Maybe there’s more to those Kylie for Puma rumours after all?

able to shoot in London, which is one of my favourite cities to spend time in,” admits the Instagirl of the moment. “I always knew I wanted to be a model. Luckily, there’s some height in my family, and I had full support from them all. It’s been a dream come true to be able to make this my career.” She explains, “I love being able to meet such talented artists and travel the world. It’s so nice meet new people who believe in me! Combine that with all the incredible photos to look back on…” Kendall’s most valuable advice for any aspiring models looking to follow in her footsteps is “to be on time and always be courteous.” Picking the pieces she wants in her wardobe, she adds, “The tones and fabrics from the new collection are very true to my natural style. Nothing’s too busy, it’s all very comfortable and, most importantly, can be worn for all occasions. My schedule is busy and this collection is adaptable to most situations, whether it be with a fashion crowd or just chillin’ with some friends.” 23

KANYE WEST IS ALL ABOUT CREATING HEADLINES, AND LAST WEEK HE DID WHAT HE ARGUABLY DOES BEST. AND A SPECTACULAR scene it was when the rapper not only showcased his Yeezy 3 collection at NYFW, but dropped his seventh album, The Life of Pablo, at the show. With Rihanna reigning supreme at her fashion debut for Puma, this was Kanye’s third collaboration with rival brand Adidas, Right: Olivier Rousteing cuddles up to bestie Kris Jenner

which saw a crowd of 20,000 gather at Madison Square Garden to witness what the rapper had to offer. The runway was more like a mini-city of models, all adorned in Yeezys – a mix of red and off-white sneakers, and orange and patent leather boots. While Puma may be hitting a little too close to home for Kanye – Kylie is allegedly in talks of penning a lucrative deal with the brand – it was a family affair at the show, with all the KUWTK clan present. Also in attendance was the rapper’s BFF Jay Z, Anna Wintour, and Olivier Rousteing – the latter who worked with Kanye to create exclusive Balmain X Yeezy pieces for the royals of reality TV – including jewelencrusted jumpsuits, dresses, and gigantic fur coats. With Olivier’s love for the famous family well-known, and the KardashianJenner clan’s mutual admiration for the designer, Olivier and Kanye are a match made in fashion heaven, and we’ll expect another Balmain X Yeezy collab, stat.

10 F O S T E R C E S THE E G A T N I V S ’ L AMA WARDROBE FOR THE PREMIERE OF HAIL CAESAR AT THE BERLIN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL, AMAL Clooney stunned in vintage Yves Saint Laurent, from London boutique WilliamVintage. William Banks-Blaney, a British fashion expert and owner of WilliamVintage, tells Grazia, “This 1981 Yves Saint Laurent is a spectacular dress by one of the most legendary designers of the 20th century. Seeing the dress come to life on the red carpet with Amal is thrilling and at the heart of what we do – impeccable, beautiful vintage clothing,” he adds. Amal also chose a glimmering WilliamVintage two-piece at a celebrity soirée last December, and is in exquisite company with celebrities including Tilda Swinton, Lana del Rey, and Daisy Lowe all being devotees of the archive. “Over the years, it has given me great pleasure to see

my discoveries so eagerly sought after and chosen by the most extraordinary women,” he muses. On Amal’s most recent choice, William notes, “From the Saint Laurent Autumn/Winter 1981 collection, this dress is a vision of sparkling micro-sequins contrasted with the soft sheen of silk satin and finished with a vast, transparent skirt of lightabsorbing black tulle.” He observes, “For all the luxurious fabrics, there is simplicity and austerity to the design. In designing this dress with a simple, unsupported camisole top and a transparent skirt, Saint Laurent understood the new shape of glamour and what would be expected of the evening gown, and he delivered it perfectly.” As did Amal. • 25 Dresses: Iconic Moments In Twentieth-Century Fashion by William Banks-Blaney (Quadrille) is out now

PROMOTION “IN THE EYES OF MOST, FASHION MONTH IS CONSIDERED THE EPITOME OF GLITZ AND GLAMOUR. AND WHY WOULDN’T IT BE?
A full week of runway shows held in a fashion capital is, without a doubt, a coveted affair – one that brings together a constellation of A-list celebrities, a who’s who of the fashion elite, and a diverse roster of talented designers from all over the world. As someone who has, in recent years, emerged as a bit of a Fashion Week regular, I can say that I have amassed first-hand knowledge of what happens in the front row, on the runway, and behind the scenes of global Fashion Weeks. From celeb sightings and jam-packed schedules to fashion disasters and the unveiling of critically acclaimed collections, I can tell you that all Fashion Weeks have one common denominator – they always end up feeling like a nonstop whirlwind of activities. Here is another insight that I can share with you – contrary to what those with a career far removed from the industry believe, Fashion Month is incredibly hard work. In fact, my personal experience has shown me that staying afloat amid all the chaos, back-to-back events, and string of high-profile, one-to-one exclusives is a real struggle. Similarly, doing all of that all the while looking stylish is no easy feat! That is exactly why I have, over the years, adopted a set of Fashion Month guidelines designed to keep my hair and skin in tiptop shape around the clock. Because, trust me, there is absolutely no time for last-minute beauty or hair care treatments.”

DIALA MAKKI’S FASHION MONTH MUST-HAVES
Diala’s do’s and don’ts for surviving Fashion Month
TV host, fashion journalist, and Arab beauty Diala Makki reveals her Fashion Month style secrets
• Always have an on-the-go h care treatment within hair reach. I always travel with re Pantene Oil Replacement, Pa which is the only product wh that can help my hair tha withstand the daily stress and with beautiful chaos that come with beau bea attending Fashion Month! To atte en me, # #PanteneHair is hair that me is hea healthy from the core, strong, and full of shine. • Plan P every outfit in advance to the last detail. Time management is imperative as m you’re hopping from one place to the ne next, and you can’t be seen in the same look as anyone else. • Hire a glam team that’s already familiar with your style. When it comes to my hair and make-up team, I only hire certain key people that I trust and that know precisely what works for me and what doesn’t. Below: Diala with Reem Acra and in action during Fashion Month
• A good night’s sleep is key to keeping your skin fresh, radiant, and rejuvenated. Of course, with all the late-night parties and early wake-up calls, getting a full eight hours of sleep is easier said than done. Still, I often manage to squeeze in a minimum of six hours. • Last but not least, I try not to let exhaustion get in the way of my make-up removal regimen. I learnt the hard way that sleeping with your make-up on can cause rashes, bumps and breakouts. Who can afford that with all those flashing light bulbs? So, no matter how tired I am, I never ever even rest my head on my pillow until all of my make-up has been removed!
LIPSTICK ON
Chamonix, 1971
Chicago, 1952
Smokey woods and grilled chestnuts set the base of this unisex scent. Soft and enveloping, it casts the wearer to a cosy cabin in the French Alps and sets them dreaming, like all good fragrances should.
Capturing the delicate, intimacy of a pre-party ritual, Lipstick On is a glimpse at a woman revelling in a private moment. A sophisticated harmony between the vibrancy of a lipstick and the airiness of soft rice powder, it’s a decadent night out, distilled and decanted.
AT THE BARBER’S Madrid, 1992 Laura Turner created At The Barbers, inspired by “the memory of my father getting ready in the morning… the aromatic notes of lavender mixed with the smell of soap bubbles in the gentle warmth of the bathroom.” This immediately evocative scent recalls the military precision of vintage masculine rituals.
FLOWER MARKET
FUNFAIR EVENING
Paris, 2011
Santa Monica, 1994
Jacques Cavallier takes floral fragrances to a new experiential level. Freshly cut green stems meet an orchestra of wet petals: freesia, rose, sambac jasmine and tuberose to create a flowery scent that comes across over a blast of fresh air.
Not for the kids –there’s a smokey electricity to Jacques Cavallier’s fragrance for Maison Margiela. Notions of late nights and neon lights ground caramelly, candy notes, while petitgrain, an extract from the bitter orange tree, lends a grown-up edge to this playful, party parfum.
JAZZ CLUB Brooklyn, 2013 This balmy scent for boys is a heady mix of intoxicating leather, tobacco and vetiver; setting the scene of a smokefilled jazz club in Brooklyn. A dark and sultry figure is undercut by a sweet note of vanilla and tonka bean to delicious effect.
LAZY SUNDAY MORNING Florence, 2003 What does the luminosity of white light smell like? Perfume designer Louise Turner looked to the purest forms of lily of the valley and patchouli to conjure a lazy morning in a hotel bed. Fresh linen dried in the blazing sun defines this scent. 50
BEACH WALK Calvi, 1972 Coconut milk, musk, and a crisp note of heliotrope are the basis of Beach Walk. This is an unusual sunny scent that uses pink pepper to add a spiky, salty spray to round off the sweetness of sun cream.
PROMENADE IN THE GARDENS Oxfordshire, 1986 Carlos Benaim was strolling through an idyllic English garden when he imagined this scent. A green crunch courtesy of vetiver resembles the poised perfection of a manicured hedge, while a rounded femininity of Turkish rose and sandalwood presents the showy blooms of a rose garden.
TEA ESCAPE Tokyo, 2008 Fabrice Pellegrin offset the astringent note of green tea with heady, gourmet notes of puffed rice and milky jasmine absolute to recall the elegance of a traditional tea ceremony he had once enjoyed in Tokyo. Tea Escape offers a calm retreat from the frenetic chaos of Japan’s capital – an elegance that’s only achieved through calm, measured movements.

How did the idea for creating your your own brushes come about? It had been quite frustrating to find brushes that I like to work with. Hence the idea of making them on my own struck me, and that was the trigger. What five make-up brushes should every Grazia girl have in her make-up bag? A powder/complexion brush, a contouring brush, an eyeliner brush, an eyeshadow blending brush, and a foundation brush are the critical tools of modern, minimalist and clean make-up. Why is it important for Grazia girls to own a professional set of make-up brushes? A complete professional set of brushes has all types and sizes you need to achieve the desired effect and finish.

HOW YOU SHOULD TRAIN Yo u r q u e s t i o n s a n s w e r e d What’s the best way to stay on track with a fitness goal?
For weight loss, if you cannot fit into certain items of clothing anymore, take them out of your closet and place them somewhere you can easily see them. This will remind you to stay on track with your weight loss aim – you want to be able to fit into them again, and seeing them will obviously remind you of this. Or go window shopping for a dress or pair of jeans you would love to fit into. Don’t buy them just yet – but take a picture, and regularly look at the photo for motivation. Also, on your fridge, have a photo of what you look like now and your initial measurements next to a picture of a celebrity you’d like to look like, and their measurements. This will also help you stay on track. Speaking of celebrities, what star do most girls say they want to look like?
Actually, most of the Grazia cover stars. Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Jennifer Lawrence, Miranda Kerr. Heidi Klum is also on many women’s wish list. What is absolutely the worst possible food you could eat for weight gain?
It’s not food, it’s certain drinks – any type of really sugary canned drinks. They have no nutritional value whatsoever,

Dubai PT Daniel Sten explains the straightup do’s and don’ts for healthy living, and how to get that Grazia cover star body and are full of sugar, which raises your insulin levels and in turn, you start to store fat. What should everyone have in their diet and why?
You should be consuming oily fish – salmon, tuna and trout – up to four times each week. They have lots of good fat in it – fatty fish is great for your cardiovascular health. If you are a vegetarian or vegan, then flaxseeds, walnuts, and avocados are essential too. What’s an overrated exercise?
All exercise is good. For this question, it really depends on what your purpose is in training. You don’t go to yoga to burn calories – this is for toning and stretching. And you won’t find aerobics classes fantastic if you want to build muscle. And what about the most underrated exercise?
Running. All you need is a pair of trainers, and the great outdoors. You don’t need any equipment or a membership to a gym – you just go.
Splurge on some new exercise attire and hit the gym like the celebs do
WEEK IN WEEK OUT yay and nay Avocados, bananas, and weights – good! And swap soft drinks for water
What’s the best stalling for time technique you’ve encountered in a PT session?
A lot of people seem to want to drink a lot water when training. Don’t get me wrong, you need to stay hydrated, but before every exercise one client, for example, would stop and say, “Wait, I need a drink,” and after the exercise, “Let’s stop for a minute. I need more water.” It’s best to drink a lot before and after the session. Another client used to say they needed to re-tie their shoe laces every 10 minutes as they were too loose. What should you do to prepare for a PT session?
Warm up by running at a steady pace for five minutes before the session starts.

What are the best supplements to take?
Omega 3 is great for fat burning, heart health and strength, and a branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) helps to provide nutrition to your muscles, plus gives you energy.
times a week, for at least half an hour to one hour at a time. It needs to include a variety of exercise, including weight lifting and cardio. What is the best possible alternative if you are craving something sweet?
Nutritionists are going to kill me, but a diet soft drink, such as a Diet Coke or Sprite Zero because also have no calories. If you aren’t a fan of diet soft drinks, then have a small piece of fruit instead. Are carbs really that bad?
It depends on when you eat them and how much. You need carbs after training because you need to recharge the carbs you’ve lost in your muscle. You can eat more carbs in the morning because you need energy in the day. However, it depends on what type of carbs. Low GI carbs keep you fuller for longer, like nuts, brown rice, and sweet potato. What’s the worst fitness myth you’ve heard?
How often should we really be exercising?
Women who say, “I’ll gain muscle if I do weights.” That’s completely untrue. Women need to do weights a few times a week – we all need strength in the body and in fact, doing weights helps us lose fat due to it being a high metabolic exercise, which increases fat burning.
Everyone should be exercising no less than three
Daniel trains at TK MMA & Fitness, Dubai
What should you eat before and after exercising?
It depends on your goal. For weight loss, don’t eat two hours before you exercise. Before this, have a banana or a small bowl of sweet potatoes. Directly after training, have a protein shake and banana.
What are people doing wrong when dieting?
They are starving themselves. Starving slows down your metabolism, so that means whenever you eat, your body grabs food and stores it. Regular, small meals throughout the day keeps your metabolism active. What is the best exercise for weight loss?
Interval training, which is cardio training consisting of alternating periods of high to low intensity activity. You can do this through a range of different exercises – running, boxing or CrossFit, just to name three. However, you need to work in weights, too. Plus, a good diet is essential. Do you have any mantra that can help us stay motivated?
“The only limit is the one you set yourself.” You really can surprise yourself with what you are capable of. The clients I have can do much more than they think they can do. Do you believe in having “cheat days”?
Yes. Not when you are initially start a weight loss regime – they can come later on once you get into a good routine. • Daniel Sten is available for personal training sessions in Dubai. Phone +971 55 332 5107 or email info. elitepersonaltrainer@ gmail.com.

A D V E N T U R E S I N A F R I C A:
SUN, SEA, AND SAFARI CHIC BEFORE I VISITED KENYA, I BELIEVED THE COUNTRY WAS COMPLETELY COMPRISED OF NATIONAL PARKS, WITH LIONS AND TIGERS AND BEARS ROAMING IN THE WILDERNESS.
I’ve now learnt a few things after my weeklong adventure – one, there are no bears, and secondly, I couldn’t have been more wrong about the landscape. While a lot of Kenya is grassland, yes, and stunning, animal-filled national parks – there are 23, not including national reserves or marine parks and reserves – Kenya’s capital city, Nairobi, has the hustle and bustle we are all so used to in Dubai, but without our impressive shopping malls, the coastal town of Watamu reminded me of Hawaii’s blue water and white, sandy beaches. But let me elaborate and start from the beginning of how I fell in love with Kenya. In a flight time of just under five hours with Kenya Airways from Dubai, I landed at the capital of the country, Nairobi. Staying in the extremely central, chic dusitD2 allowed me to drop off my bags – filled to the brim with khaki shorts, hiking boots, and floppy hats, 56
A week in Kenya saw Grazia Deputy Editor Kate Hutchinson realise there is more to the beautiful African country than just the great wilderbeast migration and grassland

sparing a bit of room for the wooden elephant carving I was intending to buy, and head out to the city. My lovely private tour guide, Joe from Travel Wild, took me around for the day, and within a matter of minutes we were in the centre of Kenya’s capital. Note: there’s no wilderness in site – it’s filled with buildings, small parks and traffic – and there’s no celebs or bloggers to spot at the local cafés, unlike at our fave hotspots in the Middle East. First up, we visited the Nairobi National Museum, which takes you to the start of it all – a crash course in the history of not only the capital, but of the country, containing cultural and natural exhibits, displays from various Kenyan tribal groups, and animal fossils. Next came the baby elephant orphanage, the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust – an orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation programme. Watching these very cute baby elephants being fed was a bittersweet moment. For one, they were being looked after, being fed daily by helpers at the centre. because their parents had been

killed by poachers for their ivory tusks. I also visited the Nairobi Animal Orphanage, located in the Nairobi National Park, which houses lions, cheetahs, hyenas, jackals, warthogs and many other animals that are in need of treatment or rehabilitation. A heads up – you’ll want to take all the animals home with you. It provided quite the preview for animals I was about to see in the wild the next day – although I didn’t realise this at the time. After a stop at the Maasai Market to buy my wooden elephant carving and impulse purchases of a Maasai painting, a wooden zebra for Dad and a pretty beaded necklace for Mum, I went back to dusitD2 for a delicious seafood-filled meal at Soi, the hotel’s modern Thai restaurant. The next morning, after a full buffet breakfast, I was dropped at Wilson Airport for my Safarilink flight in a 12-seater plane to an airstrip in Maasai Mara National Reserve where Moses, an employee at the recently opened, luxury lodge, Angama Mara, was waiting to pick me up. Situated on the Rift Valley cliff face and offering panoramic
views over the national reserve, Angama Mara is like nowhere else I’ve ever stayed, and the scenery was like nothing else I’ve ever viewed. Grazia girls – while we do all love our social media – I guarantee you will feel guilty every time you glance down at your phone, as that’s a few moments wasted not staring out into the vast expanse of wildlife-filled grassland. To sum up, I am currently saving every

dirham I earn to go back to Angama Mara and the Maasai National Reserve. My “tent” was as far from a “tent” as I had ever seen, minus the tarpaulin roof. I had a balcony, study area, lounge room, and bathtub, just to set the scene. It was on par with the staycays I’ve had around the Middle East – and that’s saying something. With the freshest local produce for each meal, a masseuse, a private tour guide, and a butler at my service, and thousands upon thousands of animals residing in the national reserve in front of me, I was in as close to heaven as I could imagine. Each night, I fell asleep to the sound of insects, hyenas and an odd animal called the bush baby who rustled in the leaves – a far cry away from the delivery motorbikes and speeding cars I usually hear from my JLT apartment. Moses was to be my private safari guide, and our game drive the next day throughout the Maasai Mara National Reserve allowed me to see giraffe, zebra and elephant herds casually walking next to us, and we spotted cheetahs, lionesses basking in the sun, and a pack of hyenas and vultures fighting over f 57

The sand and the sea… two of the many reasons why I fell in love with Watamu
a topi carcass. We watched hippos swimming down the Mara River, and an alligator on the bank, lions on the hunt, and an endangered black rhino in the tall grass. Throughout the day, we stopped for snacks and Moses set up a picnic table in the middle of the Maasai Mara. It was surreal. The following morning, after dining under the stars the night before and as visit from the local Maasai tribe who performed a traditional dance – I was up at 4.45am, woken up by my lovely butler with a coffee in hand. I was about to go on a hot air balloon ride over the Mara for sunrise. What struck me while up so high in the air wasn’t just the view and the sheer vastness of the national reserve, but also the quietness. We floated along just above the treetops ever so silently, landing in a paddock a halfan-hour balloon ride away, where a breakfast feast waited for us – hot pancakes included! The ride is a must, as the sunrise is magical from way up in the air. Another game drive, a visit to the local Maasai village – where dung and mud huts 58
are filled with families upon families of the loveliest people you’ll ever meet, and where the fact Rita Ora’s new adidas line has just dropped seemed quite insignificant. That night, I dined under a tree canopy on roasted meats. I never, ever wanted to leave, and flying up in the plane at the end of my stay, waving goodbye to Moses, I did get a bit teary. I must however note here about the domestic planes in Kenya. While Grazia Middle East is available to purchase at the airport – winning! – do not be alarmed when you first lay eyes on one as you may mistake it initially for a tin box. Just remember, the rich and famous travel in private planes of the same size and shape all the time. Just with nicer interiors. There was one more final adventure to come, and this was in Watamu, on the coast of Kenya. Staying at the luxury villas at Medina Palms meant that the white, sandy beach and crystal clear water was at my doorstep. Speaking of beach, because I was so naive about what Kenya had to offer, I didn’t bring my swimming costume. So I walked around
in my shorts and shirt, saying to the friendly staff that I had a swim in the ocean only a few hours ago, and it was wonderful, but I didn’t need another and I was happy to just walk along the shoreline. Watamu can be an action-packed adventure or as relaxing as you want. There’s a wide selection of water activities to partake in – from snorkelling to paddleboarding to kayaking – or you really don’t have to do much at all. Most of the time, I strolled around the stunning resort, sipped on my mocktail in the sun in the coffee garden, and napped in my lounge with the windows open so the soft breeze would relax me and remind me yes, this is paradise. I also went to the spa for a facial and massage, and ordered room service from the resort’s Amandina restaurant. I suggest the tuna tartare, gourmet Medina burger, and tiramisu. I did do yoga in a treehouse during my stay, which I’d recommend to anyone who wants to get their zen on, put their phone down, wear crazy coloured yoga pants and singlet tops – prep by stocking

up at lululemon and Victoria’s Secret. The Watamu Treehouse provides yoga, meditation, and relaxation retreats and daily classes in a twin-treehouse tower, offering accommodation for up to 16 people. The property is really something else, with bedrooms, kitchens, relaxing areas, rooftop space, and yoga rooms, and the space offers a 360-panoramic view of the Indian Ocean coastline and forest. After a quite-intense, but very rewarding 90-minute yoga session overlooking the coast and once again, I felt the soft breeze flowing around the open treetop space, I felt invigorated, positive, energised, centred, and everything in between. I also visited a turtle conservation centre. A short walk from the treehouse – or a two-second ride in a tuk tuk – and I was at the Local Ocean Trust Watamu Turtle Watch Centre. The organisation’s focus is the protection of Kenya’s marine environment, namely sea turtles, who have it hard in the wild due to human-related threats. The centre offers educational programmes to

teach locals how they can help protect the future of the sea turtle, and a rehabilitation centre, with sadly, too many sick turtles struggling to recover from being caught in nets or ingesting plastic. It was an eyeopener, and most definitely worth a visit. You’ll want to take them home, too. Realising I was still just a five-hour flight away from Dubai – I could have been over the other side of the world. For those wanting a complete break from the UAE that could not be more different from Dubai, head to this country. This is clearly a time when you must focus on what you want most in life. There is help around when you need it, together with newcomers in your life who offer inspiration and support. Any frustrations this week come from not being able to get everyone to do as you wish – accept this and change your direction in order to progress positively.
TOD’S SS16
PISCES 20 February – 20 March
BY KATIE LANCASHIRE
ARIES 21 March – 20 April
VIRGO 24 August – 23 September
You long to get an important project up and running, but people are standing in your way. Instead of banging your head against a brick wall, turn your attention to a more rewarding pursuit – it’s time to work on another creative venture. Your relationship feature prominently on the 21st, and your decision on its direction is final.
The planetary atmosphere on the 20th is bringing you to a greater understanding of why you want to attract a certain person into your life. You may discover two conflicting sets of motives that are in operation in your relationship. The only way through this is to try and rise above it all, and don’t become entangled emotionally.
TAURUS 21 April – 21 May
LIBRA 24 September – 23 October
Your playful attitude will attract a lot of admirers. Although you’re wary of their tendency to focus on insignificant matters, you can make a love connection. Already in a relationship? Plan an intimate outing. Focus on finances this week – savings made now will allow you to reach your dream sooner.
Although you may be undecided about how you should proceed with respect to a certain relationship, the planets are enabling you to understand how you fit into the situation. It may prove impossible to do anything about it all at the moment, but you’ll know what steps to take when the time is right. A family announcement is cause for celebration.
GEMINI 22 May – 22 June
SCORPIO 24 October – 22 November
Scattering your energies has undermined your productivity. If you’re going to be successful, you’ll have to abandon a few projects. Delegate unwanted tasks. The chance to expand your horizons will soon arrive, so seize this opportunity – you can make all the necessary arrangements once you’ve accepted this incredible offer.
The celestial configuration is encouraging you to take a tour through the murkier corners of your being in order to understand your attitudes towards relationships. This is a rare opportunity to see certain patterns of behaviour from a new perspective. A new era is dawning in your ability to be open with others.
CANCER 23 June – 23 July
SAGITTARIUS 23 November – 21 December
Having space to think and reflect on life and certain matters will bring clarity and a new perspective. Fantastic potential surrounds you this week, and at last you will find a way to move forwards. Pay close attention to finances and avoid paying an exorbitant amount for anything on the 19th. Travel links you to a future partner.
Feelings are stirred up this week that will take you out of your comfort zone. Don’t voice your controversial views unless you are ready for the fallout. Family pressure may feel overwhelming, but stand your ground so as not to get drawn in and caught off-guard. Work preparation is essential if you are to stay ahead of the game.
LEO 24 July – 23 August
CAPRICORN 22 December – 20 January
You understand fully that everything has its cycles of growth, including relationships, and the planetary alignment this week brings this cycle into prominence. It may seem you both want different things, and have different agendas. Yet if you care to look into the situation more deeply, you will find what you both desire isn’t actually that different.
Events that have occurred over the recent weeks are forcing you to evaluate where you are going. No longer can you pretend that everything is OK – instead, you now need a plan of action in order to move forward without losing your head. Avoid becoming romantically involved with people who are self-absorbed. 65
