Restaurants Think Thailand and you think of excellent Thai food; think Thailand again but think this time of the world’s cuisine readily available in most parts of urban Thailand. There can be no doubt that Thai food has now conquered the world and is one of its most desired eating experiences and where better to sample Thai cuisine than in Thailand itself. Westerners may be familiar with Thai food, because it seems that even the smallest of towns has at least one Thai restaurant. But until you have eaten Thai food in a Thai manner and have it prepared with fresh and authentic ingredients then no one can truly say they have tastes the delights of this country’s diverse dishes. Of course every one of Thailand’s major cities, towns and holiday destinations can boast more than their fare share of excellent Thai restaurants that specialised in everything from simple country cooking to Royal Thai Cuisine, or even just one type of food like Phad Thai or Som Tum.

Thai cuisine: The Thai cuisine is known for its balance of five fundamental flavors in each dish or the overall meal - hot (spicy), sour, sweet, salty and bitter (optional). Although popularly considered as a single cuisine, Thai food is really better described as four regional cuisines corresponding to the four main regions of the country: Northern, Northeastern (or Isan), Central and Southern. Southern cuisine, for example, usually contains lots of heat from chillies while northeastern tends to include lime juice in the ingredients. You won’t find it difficult to eat in Bangkok as Bangkokians always seem to be grazing if not in a full meal then on snacks. And all across the city you will find all kinds of outlets ready to feed the Thai and farang appetite. These range from the ubiquitous road-side stalls to high cuisine outlets. Perhaps the liveliest location to eat is on the famous Khao San Road, once the haunt of budget travellers and round-theworld back-packers Khao San has been gentrified of late, although you will still meet many colourful and young travellers from all over the world. But the area is becoming a bit of a gourmet secret with interesting eateries catering to the wide variety of tastes and nationalities that congregate in this area. The Silk Bar and Restaurant is a relative new-comer to the scene, it can be a lively place on times with its massive outside screen showing the best of European and Asian sport. Drinks

187

are reasonably priced and the menu is broad and multi-purpose, you can choose from some Isan favourites like glass noodle salad, papaya salad, tom yam goong, or Western familiar burgers and club sandwiches. Good value for money are the Thai green and red salads. Heading further down the road you will come across Sunset Street an effervescent little cul-de-sac that epitomises the new Khao San, it is arty, colourful and vibrant. You will find its namesake the Sunset Street restaurant, the Sabai Bar and a Starbucks occupying a traditional and old Thai house, it has live classical music. The Sunset Street is a welcome respite from the sometimes hectic pace of Khao San with many of the buildings over a century old; this is the place to get away from the cubist concrete jungle. The Sunset Street Restaurant has a menu that is similar to the Silk Bar’s but just a little more ‘meat’ to it. You can choose from Western side of the menu from a list that includes French onion soup, spaghetti Bolognese, pork chops and the like. Glancing down the Thai side you will notice a large choice of sea food, but other Thai dishes are available as well. If you want to stay firmly with your feet in the Western cuisine camp you can’t do better than another new-comer to Khao San and that is Oh My Cod. The name leaves little to the imagination because Britain’s favourite dish is available using local snapper or traditional North Sea Cod. The deep fried and battered fish invariably accompanied by thick cut chips (French fries to most of the rest of the world) and a generous serving of delicious mushy peas, a delicacy that you either like or loath. Be a proper Brit and wash it down with a bottle of beer, but in this case try Beer Lao, a refreshing brew that sets the heart of any true beer lover racing. Other beers are available too. Thai food is also available at a very reasonable price. Phra Nakorn Bar is purely Thai sits demurely on the other side of Khao San being discrete on Thanon Rathadamnoen, look for the Siam City Bank and you will not miss it. Located in a converted town house it has four floors of which the top is an open air roof terrace where you can chat and eat in peace. The menu is fabulous with delights like deep fried het-hom mushrooms, and papaya salad with fresh shrimps both great starters. Try the black banded Trvally and the Gaeng Som.

Riverside: Some of the best restaurants are to be found in Bangkok’s top class hotels and many of them have gained an international reputation for their fare. Among the most famous of Bangkok’s restaurants is Le Normandie at the Oriental Hotel. The bywords at this restaurant are impeccable service, elegant ambience and exceptional cellar. Situated in the Garden Wing of The Oriental, Bangkok, its full a la carte French menu specialises in exemplary seafood and meat dishes, although there’s always an alternative but no less exquisite set menu, both at lunchtime and dinner.

188

Models, actors, celebrities and the great and good of Thai high society are often to be seen amongst the diners. But beware there is a strict dress code here, no short sleeved shirts, short trousers, or sandals, and in the evening you are more likely to get in wearing a dinner jacket. Of course this superb hotel has other dining options too, Lord Jim’s, named after Joseph Conrad’s character, and the restaurant serves great sea food dishes, and is renowned for its sushi and sashimi dishes. For a different dining experience, one that puts you under the stars and next to the river try the Riverside or Verandah both offer excellent food at reasonable prices. Angelini’s at the Shangri-La is an Italian restaurant with views of the hotel’s garden and the Chao Phraya River. It is a grand restaurant offering both fine dining and less fussy options. Its Il mercato del pesce is a selection of shellfish and seafood fresh from the market presented on ice. The tuna and avocado tartare and the marinated salmon with antipasti followed by pasta or risotto is not to be missed. But if you do miss it try the grilled Phuket lobster with in season vegetables a treat for eye and palate. Even though it is a busy restaurant at both lunch time and in the evening the staff maintain a level of service that is professional without being overwhelming or too personal. Giorgio’s is a bright, spacious modern room with brick walls pierced by windows giving views of the Chao Phraya River. The relatively unadorned restaurant falls into the category of simple minimalist chic. As the name suggests the cuisine is Italian and authentic at that. Order an antipasto all’ Italiana for two and what you get is a large platter of cold salami, bologna, ham and other cold cuts, graced by slices of a milky, mild mozzarella caprese, roasted bell peppers, grilled eggplant, olives and other assortments. A treat and almost a meal in itself, the Salmone allo champagne is a dish that will satisfy the discerning and demanding tastes of the ancient Roman Gods; it is heavenly. But the sweet menu excels with the crowning glory going to the tiramisu drenched with espresso topped with mascarpone and dusted with fresh cocoa. A wide selection of wine is also available. Again this is not a budget breaking dining experience at around 3000 baht for two. Harmonique on Charoenkrung Soi 34 is a charming Thai restaurant in a charmingly converted Thai house that has character pouring from every joist and joint. Besides the indoor dining area there are small open air areas that are pure Thai allure. The cheerful staff and the warm atmosphere make you want to linger a little longer over dinner and drinks. The food is

189

deliciously Thai and as hot or as mild as you want it to be. Despite the small number of staff each one is attentive and certainly keep a watchful eye on your needs. A decent meal here will cost about 1,500 baht. The Gallery Caf is an independent restaurant on Soi Captain Bush, just off New Road. The atmosphere is bright and open that creates a very pleasant dining experience. Additional and unusual extras are the availability of Thai massage at an upstairs salon and the Thai crafts shop incorporated into the restaurant. The menu is extensive and again concentrates on excellent quality sea food and Thai curries. As you would expect the service is efficient and unobtrusive. A meal for two will not set you back more than 1000 baht. There are many more excellent independent and hotel based restaurants on the banks of the Chao Phraya a couple more with sampling are Trader Vic’s at the Bangkok Marriot Resort and Spa this South Pacific themed eatery serves French cuisine in a surrounding of wooden tiki, tropical paintings, voodoo icons and all that is reminiscent of South Pacific Island life. The wonderfully located Supatra River House on Soi Wat Rakhang overlooks the wildly picturesque Grand Palace it serves Thai food al fresco or in air conditioned comfort. It offers a unique dining experience with its excellent views of Ratanakasin. The service is efficient and fast.

Silom area: Anna’s Caf is a bit of a Bangkok institution with branches in most areas of the city, but the first was in Soi Sala Deang just off busy Silom. It is located in a very big converted house with a nice small garden in the front full of palms and trees that are gracefully illuminated at night. Anna’s Caf in Sala Deang is a lunch time favourite of the many office workers in the area. At night it is the haunt of the trendy and the young. It spacious interior is divided into small dining areas and the walls decorated with fascinating photographs of old Bangkok. The unprepossessing Banana House is tucked away at the side of the Duangthip Building just a few steps from Silom’s Soi 4, you have to look for it or you may miss it. With little lavish decoration this first floor restaurant has been serving diners for over 20 years now. The menu is basic Thai cooking with a few western dishes to add variety. Here you will find many old favourites like chicken fried in pandanus leaves saut ed kana vegetables with salted fish. Fried fish makes a large part of the menu here and the Fried snakehead fish and

190

Thai herbs has a deep-fried whole fish smothered under a flavourful dressing and a garden’s worth of mint, shallots and other herbs. The western dishes are tailored to appeal to local tastes so it is best to stick to the Thai food. Certainly the dessert menu is full of favourites like candied egg bananas with coconut cream and the traditional mango and sticky rice. If you like to have a glass of wine with your meal then you are out of luck as the banana House does not serve alcohol but you are allowed to bring your own. Caf de Laos on Silom Soi 19 is in a charming wooden house with wall interesting wall hangings and antique light fixtures giving a nice homely feel to the place. Garden dining is possible around a fish pond. As you would expect the food is definitely influenced by Laos, Isaan and north-eastern cuisine. Their version of som tam poo nim with the spice papaya salad is definitely worth trying. Unless you ask the grilled beef to the well done it comes just a little pink, but this is sliced and laid alongside a fiery Isaan sauce, fiery it might be but the taste is pure heaven. Choosing from the vast menu is made easier by pictures of the dishes alongside their names. The service is professional and personalised it is easy to discuss your particular wants with the knowledgeable staff. Eat Me in Soi Pipat 2 is just off Convent Road serves an international cuisine the ground floor has a small gallery that hosts rotating art shows. Walking through the gallery will take you to the first floor dining area where the choice of indoors or al fresco dining is yours. The cuisine is best described as Australian/Pacific rim. The main courses are also very pleasingly presented with a wide variety of shellfish and seafood items. Specialities include spicy chicken with lemongrass and couscous, and mediumrare duck liver with caramelised cassis onion tartlet. The five lettuce side salad compliment the main dish perfectly. The dessert of choice is their delicious fresh fruit salad. The service is professional and friendly, new comers are as well treated as many of their old regulars. The Silom area is packed with restaurants that offer fine dining at reasonable prices in addition to those mentioned the Naj Restaurant is in another converted wooden Thai house, it is in a little side-soi off Convent Road and opposite the BNH Hospital. The food is traditionally Thai and as a service to its western clients it flags the more spicy dishes. The food is equaled by the level of attention given by the waiting staff all of whom unobtrusively observe and anticipate your needs. They genuinely want to make your meal one to remember. There is nothing to match the stunning views of the Sirocco an open-to-the-skies restaurant on the 63rd floor of the State Tower. The menu is international with the ingredients being

191

regularly flown in from Europe and Australia; this is a dining experience you will never forget. Something else that will be unforgettable is the wine list that includes a 1990 Chateau Petrus at over 130,000 baht a bottle. If your wallet groans at this price tag other more reasonably priced wines are available. Another roof top eating venue is the Vertigo at the Banyan Tree Hotel, a similar menu and experience awaits the adventurous diner, and for many the Vertigo is a less pressured, more relaxed eating experience. The staff and service at the Vertigo are professional and attentive to the extreme, this combined with an in depth knowledge of their international menu and wine list provides a truly memorable experience. If you are staying in this area then the D’Sens at the Dusit Thani Hotel provides authentic French cuisine in almost palatial surroundings. As you would expect from the staff of a five star hotel the service is excellent, polite and attentive. Around the corner on Soi Sala Daeng is Zanotti’s Italian restaurant this with Scoozi’s are almost becoming a Bangkok eating institutions.

Sukhumvit: Sukhumvit Road is one of Bangkok’s main roads and a busy commercial and entertainment district so you would expect this area to be thronged with restaurants and eateries and you would not be wrong. Some of Bangkok’s finest and best known restaurants are to be found along this road. A Garden serves a European cuisine and is another restaurant located in a charming converted house, diners have the choice of air-conditioned contemporary comfort or a romantic al fresco setting. The food is European inspired but with a touch of Thai artistry to give a special and different taste. There is a good wine list and the service is friendly but not over familiar, efficient but not obtrusive and best of all the staff are knowledgeable. A L’Etage on Sukhumvit Soi 39 is Located in a small complex of shops and eating places, shaded by trees and plants, that gives this restaurant a Parisian feel enhanced by its comfortable seating and chic decor. The food is of course, French. Most of the food products are imported from Europe or Australia and are freshly prepared daily. As a starter try the foie gras du chef, pan-fried and served with cranberry sauce, this mouth-watering morsel is not to be missed. For the main course braised rabbit with risotto and pumpkin puree is unusual and delicious, and pan-fried monk fish on a plinth of cabbage is also a good choice. Vegetarians are not forgotten either, try

192

the grilled goat cheese on a bed of baby green salad along with its raspberry dressing is guaranteed to pep up those taste buds and is an excellent introduction to French tastes. The menu has a recommended wine for each course so there is no need to fret about choosing the right wine. The staff are warm and hospitable and attentive. The L’Etage is not cheap but for around 2,500 baht a person the quality and experience is beyond compare. Bourbon Street is Bangkok’s first Cajun/Creole restaurant. It is redolent of a New Orleans dining experience with its simple wooden tables and rattan woven chairs. The wine list is New World. The service is polite and prompt. Crepes and Co on Soi 22 has quickly become a bit of a Bangkok institution it is delightfully located in a house set in a garden. The cuisine is Mediterranean in inspiration and crepebased by design. The wine list is fairly extensive with the cheapest bottle at under 1000 baht. The staff are young, polite and eager to serve. Modapesce brings something different to Bangkok it is an Italian seafood restaurant on Soi 53. It is located in a huge, airy and contemporary house painted in crisp white with large windows providing views of the huge terrace, garden and pond. Upstairs is a small dining room for private parties. The greater part menu is fish and seafood based dishes. Fish is a popular alternative for health-conscious people these days although several non-seafood items are also available. The wine list is understandably dominated by Italian vintages and start at 1200 baht a bottle. The staff are attentive to the needs of their clients. Rosabieng on Soi 11 occupies a beautiful house with spacious grounds near the end of the soi. Its name means “train dining car” and the railway theme starts out front, with a converted train car serving as a bar. The house is well decorated with a miniature train running through a Swiss village inside a glass showcase. The restaurant serves authentic Thai cuisine the menu offering an intriguing combination of fine dining and homecooked food haut coutured for that special occasion. A good example is tom yum nuea toon; braised beef commonly eaten with noodles is spiced up with local herbs and lime juice to make a fragrant and flavourful soup. There is a small selection of both red and white wine at moderate prices. The service is fast and efficient provided by staff who know when to step in and when to leave. The above is just a very short selection of the eating choices available in only three of Bangkok’s busy tourist and business areas. There are other excellent dining experiences to be had in the many four and five star hotels and in other parts of

193

Bangkok like Sathorn Road, the Old City, Siam area, China Town and Nonthaburi to name just a very few. It is not possible to experience the complete range of cuisines and dining experience that Bangkok has to offer but it is certainly a great ambition to try as many as you can. After all fine dining, even at Bangkok’s famed and expensive venues will not break the bank or stress the credit card.

Cooking schools: The phenomenal popularity of Thai cuisine is gaining in popularity year by year and in the West eating at a Thai restaurant may be a very expensive venture, so what better than cooking your own Thai food in your own kitchen, for that you will need to take a cooking course. Finding a cooking course in Bangkok and Thailand’s other major cities is increasingly easy. Many of Bangkok’s best hotels provide short courses on Thai cooking the courses range from watch and learn with demonstrations and talks to handson selection of ingredients to preparation to presenting the final meal. What ever course you want you will find it. Three of the longest established are to be found at the Oriental Hotel, the Dusit Thani Hotel and the Landmark Hotel. The famed Oriental Hotel on the banks of the Chao Phraya River conducts four day look and learn courses at its sala across the river from the hotel. The courses are conducted in English by Thai and Western chefs. The Dusit Thani’s Benjarong Royal Thai Cuisine is one of the most sophisticated restaurants in Bangkok. Located in the five star Dusit Thani Hotel, right in the centre of the city. The course runs for twelve weeks on every Saturday morning from 9.30 to 12.30. Recipes are drawn from the restaurant’s menu and include snacks and appetisers, soup and salad, main dishes and desserts. Benjarong Cooking Class offers a very hand-on experience, and the instruction emphasizes practicality and inventiveness. The Landmark Hotel’s Nipa Restaurant also offers a 7-day course that is designed to teach beginners all the basics of Thai cooking and enable them to prepare curries, soups, salads and other dishes that make up a Thai meal. The restaurant’s chefs’ lecture on ingredients and recipes, and then let students participate in the cooking and tasting. Other courses can be had at the Amari Airport and Boulevard Hotels, Arnoma Hotel, Bangkok Mariott and Spa, Century Park, Indra Regent, Montien, Grand Hyatt Erawan, Shangri-la, and the Sheriton Grande Sukhumvit, amongst others.
