4. CINQUECENTO CLASSICISM - Rome and Venice rose during the 16 th century as important artistic centres in Italy. 1. Architecture - Buildings became austere and monumental without losing the harmony between elements. - The Rome of Pope Julius II was the main architectural centre for artist like Bramante and Michelangelo. - In Venice, Palladio was the leading architect.


4. CINQUECENTO PAINTING - Painters masterfully represented perspective and human proportion. - They investigated other thecniques using light and colour to achieve a natural look. - Important artists: - Leonardo da Vinci: works like The gioconda or the Last Supper. - Rafael Sanzio: he was a genius inperspective and composition showed in the School of Athens. - Michelangelo: creator of the ceilings at the Sistine Chapel, who created masterpices like The Creation of Adam and the Last Judgment, - In Venice, Tintoretto, Giorgione and Titian mastered the use of colour.

CINQUECENTO SCULPTURE -Archaeological discoveries from Ancient Rome inspired the sculptors. - They were influenced by classical antiquity. - This inspired the importance of the human body, proportion and balance. - They represented nudes. - Michelangelo was the most outstanding sculptor of the Cinquecento. - His marble statues were very passionate and reflected the Renaissance qualities of harmony and balance.


4. CINQUECENTO MICHELANGELO: A GENIUS AND VISIONARY - Michelangelo evolved from the serenity of classicism to more expressive and dramatic figures, anticipating a new artistic movement. 1. David: representing him before he confronts Goliath, the tension displayed in his muscles is a masterful study of anatomy. 2. Moses: the tension and movement are more evident in this work. Moses loooks stern. 3. Rondanini PietĂ : its unpolished surfaces, unfinished edges and retreat from naturalism show a new artistic style outside of classicism.


4. CINQUECENTO -

MANNERISM Mannerist style emerged around 1520 and lasted until it was replaced by the Baroque style in 1580. People abandon humanism and classical art because of political and religious events. Artists began applying a new meaning to classic shapes. To surprise the viewer, artwork shows colossal size and disproportion between its elements.
