4. ROMAN SOCIETY AND ECONOMY FAMILY LIFE -

Wealthy families had slaves and free servants. The father, or pater familias: -

Women: -

He was head of the family He controled the family He supervised the household religion He aranged marriages for his children. They had no political rights Their role was restricted to family life. They married very young and then look after the family home. Some womn owned property.

Children: -

Only children of wealthy families received education. Both girls and boys were educated at hoe, often by Greek teachers. Later: -

Girls were trained by theirs mothers to perform domestic duties. Boys received more training under their father’s supervision.


4. ROMAN SOCIETY AND ECONOMY FOOD AND CLOTHING FOOD: -

The main meal was the cenae, or evening meal. Wealthy people ate mea, fish, vegetables, and fruit and drank wine. Poor people ate cereals mixed with water and fat. Sometimes they ate fruit.

CLOTHING -

For wealthy men consisted of a tunic, which was covered with a toga. For wealthy women the tunic was covered with a stola. Women gave great importance to their hair. The clothing of the poor people and slave was simple and modest.

Rome had a slave economy. They worked in agriculture, mining and for several jobs in the cities. Agriculture: -

It was the manin economic activity. Tomans grew many types of produce: cereals, olives vines and so on. Some regions specialised in one product: corn in Egypt, olives in Hispania, vines in Gaul‌ They used ploughs, hand mills and wine or olive presses.

Craftwork: - It was carried out in workshops, where slaves were used.

Mines: - They belonged to the state and were rented to wealthy people - They use slave labour.

Trade: It was very important for : - the stability of the Empire. - The use of Roman currency - An excellent road system.
