4. THE EARTH’S CLIMATES -

The Earth’s climates can be divided into 4 types: 1. Hot climates : - a) equatorial climate - b) tropical climate : humid tropical and dry tropical 2. Dry climates: a) Hot desert climate b) Steppe climate 3. Temperate climate: a) Continental b) Mediterranean c) Oceanic d) Humid sub-tropical (chinese) 4. Cold climates: a) Polar climate b) Mountain climate

4. THE EARTH’S CLIMATES HOT CLIMATES 1. -

EQUATORIAL CLIMATE: Temperatures are very high all year round (25ºC) Precipitation is abundantand constant (1,500 mm annually)

2. TROPICAL CLIMATE: a) HUMID TROPICAL: - Temperatures are high all year round (20ºC) - Precipitation is abundant (1,500 mm annually) - There are two seasons: dry season and rainy season. b) DRY TROPICAL : - Temperatures ae high all year round (20º C) - Precipitation is scarce (300-600 mm annually).

4. THE EARTH’S CLIMATES DRY CLIMATES 1. HOT DESERT: - Temperatures ae very high all year round (25C) - It’s much coldder at night than during the day. - Precipitation is very scarce (less than 300 mm annually). 2. STEPPE: - Temperatures are very high in summer (25ºC) and very cold in winter (below 5º C) - Precipitation is very scarce (less than 300 mm annually)

4. THE EARTH’S CLIMATES TEMPERATE CLIMATES 1.

CONTINENTAL: - Temperatures are high in summer (20ºC) and low in winter (less than 5º C). - Precipitation varies between 300 – 1,000 mm annually and it falls in summer.

2. MEDITERRANEAN: - Temperatures are hot in summer and mild in winter. - Precipitation varis between 300- 800 mm annually. It falls in spring and autumn. 3. HUMI SUB-TROPICAL (CHINESE): - Temperatures are hot and humid in summer and cool and mild in winter. - Precipitation varies between 760-1,500 mm annually 4. OCEANIC: - Temperatures are mild all year round. - Precipitation is abundant and regular (1,000- 1,500 mm annually)

4. THE EARTH’S CLIMATES COLD CLIMATES 1. MOUNTAIN CLIMATE: - Temperatures drop as altitude increases (6C each 1,000 metres). - temperatures are cold in winter and cool in summer. - Precipitation is high due to alitude but varies according the zone. 2. POLAR CLIMATE: - Temperatures are very low all year round (below 5º C) - Precipitation is scarce (less than 300 mm) and it falls as snow.
