5. THE FALL OF ROMAN HISPANIA THE GERMANIC INVASIONS

- The 3rd century crsis affected many regions of he Roman Empire. - On the Iberian Peninsula, trade and urban life declined.

- Germanic civilisations were on the move and hey moved into parts of Hispania. - In 507 AD, The Visigoths lost their kingdom in Gallia, and they returned to Hispania and stayed here. - The Visigoths created the Visigothic Kingdom, which unifed most of he Peninsula and had its capital in Toledo.

They settled in the north- west But this area came under Visigothic control in he late 6 th century

2. The Cantabros and the Vascones: - They were never fully romanised. - They also resisted the Visigoths. 3. The Byzantine Empire: - Under the Emperor Justinian (6th century) the Byzantine Empire gained the control of the south – east of the Peninsula.

The Visigoths were a minority, but they dominated the Hispano – Roman population. Politics: -

The Visigoths practised a type of Christianity called Arianism. Under King Recaredo, they converted to Caholicism. The Councils of Toledo ere a series of important meetings where religious and political questions were decided.

Their monarchy was elected so there were often disagreements about succession. They were advisef by an assembly of aristocrats called Aula Regia.

They built small decorated churches Their craftsmen made exceptional jewellery Saint Isidore of Seville wrote Etymologiae, which was an encyclopedia of all existing knowledge.

Under king Rodrigo, the Visigoths were defeated by the Muslims at the Battle of Guadalete (711 AD). This date marked he end of the Visigoths Kingdom and the beginning of Muslim rule on the Iberian Peninsula.
