7. THE HELLENISTIC PERIOD - The Greek city states were weakened and divided after the Peloponnesian Wars. - King Phillip II of Macedonia conquered Greece. - His son, Alexander the Great conquered the Persian Empire and built an empire that stretched to western India. - When Alexander died, the empire was divided into several hellenistic monarchies where Greek cuktural influence was maintained. - One of the finest hellenistic cities was Alexandria, the new capital of Egypt.
