4. THE RENAISSANCE IN EUROPE THE NORTHERN RENAISSANCE -

Renaissance art spread from Italy to the rest of Europe in the 16 th century. In the Low Countries, Germany and France this movement was called the Northern Renaissance. THE LOW COUNTRIES

In the 15 th century, Flemish artists like Jan Van Eyck painted with great realism. Italian influence reached the present-day countries of the Netherlands and Belgium in 1500. But Dutch and Flemish artists were less interested than the Italians in the classical ideals of Antiquity. Some painters achieved a personal style: - Hieronymus Bosh (El Bosco) painted strange, fantastic scenes. - Bruegel the Elder showed scenes of everyday life.

GERMANY In Germany, Dßrer (Duero) was one of the greatest artists of the Northern Renaissance. He was influenced by humanism and visited Italy twice. He painted religious and secular subjects and studied his own character in a series of self-portraits. FRANCE King François I of France invited many Italian artists, including Leonard da Vinci, to his court. Many palaces were built such as the Fountainebleau and Chambord.

ARCHITECTURE:

- There were three styles in Spanish architecture: a) Classical buildings: like Carlos V’s palace in Granada influenced by the Italian Renaissance. b) Plateresque decoration of façades, example the University of Salamanca, imitating the work of silversmiths (plateros) c) The Herrerin style was named after the architect Juan de Herrera. He built the austere and monumental Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial. 2. SCULPTURE: - The Spanish sculptor Berruguete studied under Michelangelo in Italy. - He created vigorous sculptures on religious subjects. 3. PAINTING: - Spanish sculptor was mainly religious. - The greatest artist was El Greco, who painted his most masterpieces in Toledo. - He developed a personal style that was very dramatic and spiritual
