On November 20, 2010, participants will gather at the Carlu for Chef’s Challenge – The Ultimate Battle for a Cure featuring Gordon Ramsay. All proceeds will be donated to support breast and ovarian cancer research at Mount Sinai Hospital. For Chris Collins, a self-proclaimed foodie, aspiring chef and Food Network devotee, the event is an opportunity to raise money in memory of his late friend, Clare Turkington or “Clare Bear” as he called her. In 2007, his dear friend passed away from cancer at the age of 36. Mixing his passion for cooking and his love for Clare, Chris is determined to raise $10,000 for the Chef’s Challenge. At various fundraising benchmarks, Chris will cut off a portion of his hair and donate it to the “Locks of Love” program, a non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to children and youth who have suffered hair loss, many of them from cancer. If he is able to reach
his $10,000 goal, Chris will donate all of his hair. “I am doing the Chef’s Challenge for the memory of Clare because I loved her as any true friend, and to help raise money for women’s Chris Collins cancers will be a small victory against a terrible disease,” said Chris. Chef’s Challenge will be a spectacular, oneof-a-kind evening bringing together a high calibre group of chefs and fundraisers, led by the irrepressible Chef Ramsay. If you would like to sponsor Chris Collins or participate in Chef’s Challenge please visit www.chefschallengeforacure.com.

President’s Message Dear Members and Friends, I hope you are settling into fall as we have a spectacular list of events coming up that will keep you out of the cold. Chef’s Challenge with Gordon Ramsay, taking place on November 20, is presented by MasterCard Worldwide, and we are thrilled to to partner with them Barbara Kerbel-May this year. Since 1923 the Auxiliary has been supporting life saving research and care at Mount Sinai Hospital. Your support is more important that ever— please register online and join the fight against women’s cancers at www.chefschallengeforacure.com. I am excited to report on a new Auxiliary initiative called Moms for Sinai. The committee, led by co-chairs, Jennifer Brodlieb, Jennifer Konopny, Jennifer Elmaleh and Kailee Mecklinger, will engage young mothers by providing an opportunity for social interaction and community support through fundraising programs for the Hospital. An information night is scheduled for Wednesday, November 24— please spread the word. I was so pleased to greet those who were able to attend the Membership Tea on September 21. It was a thoroughly impressive turn-out and the room buzzed with enthusiasm.
What a treat to have Holt Renfrew’s Christina McDowell present the fall collection of accessories. Thank you to Max and Heather Gotlieb for opening up their beautiful home and co-chairs Marlene Borins and Barbara Bregman for organizing the event. The 3rd annual Yoga in Motion is taking place on April 10, 2011 at the Liberty Grand and we expect it to be even bigger this year. Next up to bat, and we know it will be a home run, is Strike Out Cancer — a celebrity baseball tournament and Grand Slam Gala Party, May 14, 15 and 17, 2011. Stay tuned for more details about Yoga in Motion and Strike out Cancer in the next edition of the Auxiliary Insider. With so many exciting things coming up there is something for everyone, so please get involved on a committee. Together we are the Bright Minds and Big Hearts that support Mount Sinai Hospital. Sincerely,
Barbara Kerbel-May, President

In Memoriam
Ahuva Boyer, dedicated volunteer Ahuva Boyer was a long-time volunteer to Mount Sinai Hospital, contributing over 6,000 hours of service to both the Hospital and Auxiliary over 26 years. Ahuva died in October at age 73 after a sudden stroke. The quiet, kind and generous woman left a lasting impression on those who were fortunate enough to know her.
Ahuva Boyer
Ahuva moved to Canada when she was a young woman after serving as a police officer in Israel. She began volunteering at Mount Sinai Hospital in 1984. Together with her friend, Shirley Richman, Ahuva contributed most of her time in the Auxiliary gift shop until its
closing in 2005. The two friends regularly attended the gift show together, selecting the merchandise, and organizing the annual sales that brought people out in droves. Their commitment to volunteering and similar family backgrounds connected them as life-long friends. “Ahuva was dependable, she was always available when you needed her,” said Shirley. Long-time colleague and volunteer coordinator Leslie Herman said, “Ahuva was a generous woman in every sense, a generous heart and a generous soul.” Ahuva will be dearly missed but not forgotten and we are thankful of the time she gave us.
