PICTURE BOOKS

A charming story about a cranky caterpillar and the little girl who brings some colour into his life. For ages 3+ Richard Graham works from his art studio in London, where he creates characters from everyday objects – including oversized caterpillars from old pianos. The Cranky Caterpillar is his first picture book.

21.0 x 27.5 cm 32pp ISBN 978 0 500 651087 September £10.95

The Cranky Caterpillar Richard Graham

4

One day Ezra hears a gloomy blue tune coming from the piano. To her surprise, it’s a caterpillar making the sound: a cranky caterpillar. Ezra tries to cheer him up with some fresh air, cakes, and new hats, but nothing seems to work … What can Ezra do to help the cranky caterpillar change his tune? Richard Graham is a new illustrator with a highly distinctive and original style. The origins of The Cranky Caterpillar lie in his own artistic sculptural creations: a caterpillar created from the hammers inside an old piano, a band of musical characters, all sculpted from instruments and materials found in his studio. Graham has also been inspired by Wassily Kandinsky’s colour synesthesia, whereby we are shown the magical colours of music, in this splendidly illustrated book. Children will identify with the struggle the caterpillar goes through in trying to articulate his emotions, and will delight in the inventive band of friends that succeed in cheering him up.

‘Absolutely astonishing … [an] astounding piece of work’ Raymond Briggs

Told and illustrated in Beatrice Alemagna’s exquisite trademark style, A Magical Do-Nothing Day celebrates the magical effect boredom can have on a child’s imagination. It tells the story of a young girl whose mother has insisted on spending a weekend in the remote countryside. There is nothing for the girl to do but stay glued to her computer game. Forced outside into the rain for some fresh air, our young protagonist is distraught when her game slips out of her pocket, into the lake. But to her surprise and delight, she finds an entire world of games and excitement in the natural world around her, and discovers the magic in doing nothing.

Locomotive Rhymes by Julian Tuwim • Drawings by Lewitt and Him

This classic book invites us aboard a steam train as it chuffs and puffs out of the station carrying giraffes, elephants, bicycles, umbrellas and a trio of men, all eating sausages. Just like the 1938 original, this edition also includes a well-loved folk tale about an enormous turnip and the hilarious story of chatterbox birds who can’t agree on anything.

‘ Locomotive is a true pioneer, paving the way for multiple generations of children’s book illustrators, including myself. I was fortunate enough to have been exposed to this book as a child, and Lewitt and Him’s innovative typography and bold art deco illustrations still look fresh, dignified and beautiful, even after 80 years! I’m so grateful that great works like this are preserved and republished, so that they can continue to inspire artists and readers to come’ Oliver Jeffers

His collaboration with Quentin Blake began in 1960 with A Drink of Water, and has resulted in a long list of successful children’s books. Quentin Blake received a knighthood for his services to illustration in 2013 and in 2014 was admitted to the Légion d’honneur in France.

19.1 x 15.3 cm 70pp ISBN 978 0 500 651353 October £10.95

A Drink of Water And Other Stories John Yeoman • Illustrations by Quentin Blake Who would believe it could be so hard to get a drink of water? And to find it at last, cool and fresh but out of reach – that was a problem indeed for a young monkey. But luckily for him, he had an observant and logical mind. This was more than could be said for the dog that made friends with the bear, or the vain jackdaw; and as for the silly ewe and the nanny goat – well, one might call it guile or one might call it simplicity that kept the wolves at bay. First published in 1960, this charming book of animal fables was the first children’s book either Quentin Blake or John Yeoman ever published. It exudes all the warmth and wit we have come to expect of their collaborations.
