In the second instalment of Gift Lab’s experiments, we continue to explore new pathways into Thames & Hudson’s key subjects, starting, unsurprisingly, with art.
‘There is no such thing as art, there are only artists’, wrote E.H. Gombrich, and we had this in mind when conceiving our Artist Box series. How do you enter the world of an artist without having to read a lengthy biography, wrestle with a heavy showcase book or sit through an endless lecture? Each Artist Box takes you into an imaginary studio lled with fun activities designed to draw you (and your family) into the mind, and the universe, of a great artist. Our rst two subjects are Claude Monet and Frida Kahlo. Younger (and more impatient) members of the family may want to go straight to producing masterpieces with our imaginative and interactive Play with Matisse box.
Rock Gods & Goddesses combines two of Thames & Hudson’s favourite subjects: mythology and music. At rst, it was just a fun title, then it led us to ask: but aren’t rock stars mythological gures? And if they were actual gods, what gods would they be? So, with their essence ltered through the asks and tubes of our lab, Sting transformed into Pan trying to save the Amazon, Jim Morrison morphed into Dionysus, while Freddie Mercury was reborn as Venus. In a new version of ‘I Want to Break Free’, our moustachioed Venus vacuum-cleans the shell of the Botticelli painting.
Then, of course, all roads lead to… Rome. The latest title in our storytelling jigsaw series, The Story of Rome in 1000 Pieces, retells Virgil’s classic The Aeneid.
Oh, yes, and let’s not forget the environment. Best-selling children’s illustrator Yuval Zommer has collaborated with our Gift Lab to produce The Big Biodiversity Jigsaw, whichcelebrates the richness of our planet.
But it is important to nish on a playful note – this is a Gift Lab after all. Animals in the Nude is a matching game conceived by illustrator Daniel Frost in which creatures such as a queen conch, an emperor bird-of-paradise or a candy cane snail all dress to impress.
As you can tell, we take silliness very seriously.
