THE ART OF NATURE SLOW LOOKING

Slow Looking: The Art of Nature is a unique celebration of the relationship between art and nature across millennia. Eschewing a linear narrative of art, this inspirational collection of artworks allows readers to make connections between the nature that surrounds them and the vision of a dazzling wide range of artists. Art historian Olivia Meehan has mixed paintings, drawings, sculpture, textiles, and decorative arts from across the globe in thought-provoking juxtapositions, inviting us to nd something new in a familiar landscape and experiment in observing nature's wonders. Exploring the various intersections between artistic techniques and thematical elements across land, water, and sky, the pages reveal the deep-rooted connections between human beings and our natural world: the form and colors of a Georgia O’Kee e painting of a shell echo a carved fossil from 500,000–300,000 BCE; Vincent Van Gogh’s olive trees (1889) are juxtaposed with ancient Egyptian carved limestone dated between 1353–1323 BCE; and while water lilies captivated Claude Monet, their allure also traveled to mid-18th century India in Hunhar II’s watercolor work.

Following nature’s patterns, Slow Looking: The Art of Nature takes readers on a journey from elds, mountains, forests, and glaciers to lakes, ponds, waterfalls, and rivers, and on to sunrises, rainbows, comets, clouds, constellations, and so much more. This guided observation of nature o ers a whole new way of contemplating the world.

Dr. Olivia Meehan is an art historian who makes connections between art, literature, nature, and gardens across continents and through centuries. Meehan’s gallery and museum experience is wide- ranging, from house museum collections to national and state collections, such as the Heide Museum of Modern Art, National Gallery of Victoria, National Gallery of Australia, and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and Archivio Luigi Nono, both in Venice. She regularly contributes to The World of Interiors. Meehan has lectured art history at the University of Cambridge, Australian National University, and University of Melbourne.

Following the success of A House Party in Tuscany and Italian Coastal, Amber Guinness invites us on an artful tour through her beloved Southern Tuscany and favorite pockets of Florence. Winter in Tuscany celebrates the region’s rich culinary and cultural traditions with a quanto basta approach—the intuitive, Italian method of “just enough”—and brings the heart of Tuscany’s cozy fall and wintry avors to your kitchen.

But quanto basta is more than just a philosophy for cooking; it’s a metaphor for life. This book celebrates life in the o season; an ode to exploring Tuscany’s villages and countryside when the crowds have thinned, allowing for a deeper, more intimate connection with the culture, food, and landscapes. In discovering treasures o the beaten path, Amber highlights the richness of exploring at a gentler pace, when Tuscany truly reveals itself.

The book is lled with an array of hyperlocal, traditional recipes for the home cook: from antipasti, zuppe—thick, nutritious Tuscan soups—and brodo, brothy mains that bring comfort on colder days to rustic pasta, rice, and secondi—meat and vegetable dishes that celebrate the season.

Whether you’re strolling beneath Della Robbia’s cherubs or simmering a hearty soup on a cold winter’s night, Winter in Tuscany is an invitation to slow down and appreciate the beauty in small moments and big avors.

Amber Guinness is a cook and food writer who lives in Florence, Italy. She was born in London but raised in Arniano, the Tuscan farmhouse her parents restored near Siena. She has a master’s degree in history and Italian from the University of Edinburgh and has worked as a cook in both London and Italy. Amber’s rst book, A House Party in Tuscany, featured recipes and stories from her internationally acclaimed residential painting school in Arniano. Her second book, Italian Coastal, was a journey in food along the Tuscan coast. Winter in Tuscany is her third book. Amber is married with a son.

As adventure sports like climbing and mountaineering become popular, women’s visibility in the sport has also grown. Mountaineering Women is a richly illustrated collection of the awesome and often surprising stories celebrating the achievements of twenty women climbers from across the globe.

From the Amazigh (Berbers) of the Atlas Mountains in Morocco to the Inca Empire, high in the Andes, women have long traversed the world’s most forbidding peaks. When, many centuries later, mountaineering took o as a sporting activity in the West, it was plucky Victorian women who de ed convention to tackle the fabled summits of the European Alps. Yet despite the fact that women have a pronounced and rich history in the sport, they are conspicuously underrepresented in mountaineering literature.

Mountaineering Women seeks to readdress a narrative that frequently focuses on the exploits of white, male “explorers.” The climbers come from a wide range of nationalities, and each of their compelling stories is accompanied by a specially commissioned ink illustration and evocative black-and-white photographs. Three sixteen-page full- color photographic sections, meanwhile, reveal the mountaineers in action in mountainscapes in all their grandeur.

Bookending the main chapters is a comprehensive introduction, written by Nandini Purandare, editor of the internationally renowned Himalayan Journal, and a closing essay by professional climber Ashima Shiraishi, looking toward the future of the sport.

Joanna Croston moved to the Canadian Rockies in 1998, where she is currently the director for the Ban Centre Mountain Film and Book Festival and World Tour. She has climbed many of the classic 11,000-ft peaks in the area. Her writing has appeared in Highline Magazine, Gripped, The Canadian Alpine Journal, The Canadian Rockies Annual, Mountain Life, and Alpinist

A visual celebration of a seminal decade. As the Cold War ended and a new millennium approached, grunge, hip-hop, and rave exploded in popularity as teenagers and twenty-somethings searched for something real, something more meaningful. Ostentation was out. Authenticity was in. And so, we had the rst ashes of reality TV, the O. J. Simpson trial, the rise of surveillance culture, and the internet. We had early wake-up calls to the world of social media as The Truman Show and The Blair Witch Project exploited the emerging visual language of DIY video content. We heard the rallying call of “Girl Power!” from riot grrrls and the Spice Girls. We argued over East Coast versus West Coast rap and Biggie versus Tupac. Ice-T went from “Cop Killer” to TV detective and Will Smith went from the Fresh Prince to a man in black. Cults, crop circles, and conspiracy theories spread while The X-Files and The Matrix pulled back the curtain on ctional hidden truths. It was the end of history, and it was print’s last hurrah— or so we thought. This book explores history, art, lm, music, and culture in a unique, immersive, and visual narrative of a con icted and momentous decade. A fascinating ecosystem of in uence between high and low culture, this stimulating volume makes sense of the decade’s recurring motifs, trends, and themes, from supermodels to airport style and from the fall of the Soviet Union to the end of the world.

Feared, revered, respected, and beloved, cats have left an indelible paw print on the histories and civilizations of humankind. Over the last two million years, cats and people have interacted in diverse and unexpected ways, but the predecessors of today’s furry friends were predators, not pets. Leading anthropologist Jerry Moore charts the cat’s path from deadly enemy to improbable roommate, making use of the latest archaeological evidence to produce an original and revealing narrative. Starting with the terrifying prehistorical scimitar-tooth cat of the Pliocene age and the lion drawings of the Paleolithic Chauvet caverns, Moore journeys through our complicated history with these charismatic creatures. He travels along the Nile and across the Mediterranean, sailing on to South America, exploring pet cemeteries, cat mummies, and exquisite statuary across continents and centuries.

Illustrated throughout with photographs, artifacts, and artworks, this book surveys our relationships with cats from the Paleolithic period to the present day, unlocking the mysteries of these remarkable creatures. While cats are now beloved members of families around the world, our attempts to bring cats in from the cold have not always had happy endings, as Moore explores through such famous feline fanciers as Joe Exotic, Siegfried Fischbacher, and Roy Horn. From incredible archaeological nds to cave paintings, and from classical statues to contemporary social media, Cat Tales surveys ancient and modern interactions between humans and cats, wild and domestic, to ask a simple question: who domesticated who?

Jerry D. Moore is an archaeologist, writer, editor, and professor emeritus of anthropology at California State University, Dominguez Hills. His books include The Prehistory of Home (winner of the Society for American Archaeology Popular Book Award) among many others. He has also written for Archaeology Magazine, and he was the editor of ÑawpaPacha: Journal of Andean Archaeology. Moore lives in Long Beach, California, where he provides food service to two cats.

Drawing on more than 100 interviews—including family members, friends, lovers, gallery owners, collectors, musicians, academics, and artists—art-world insider Doug Woodham o ers a revealing account of Basquiat’s life, work, and enduring legacy. He delves into Basquiat’s rich and complex family background, his overlapping identities, and the dramatic arc of his posthumous fall and rise—an ascent that has reshaped the art-world itself. This behind-the-scenes narrative pulls back the curtain on how the art world selects its icons and cements their place in history.

The rst substantive biography in more than a quarter century, JeanMichel Basquiat: The Making of an Icon examines key aspects of the artist’s life—his childhood trauma, sexuality, cultural identities, and struggles with addiction—topics long downplayed in the museum and art world due to pressure from his estate. Woodham also uncovers the previously untold story of how a few against-the-grain speculators and gallerists—plus his uniquely skilled father—all contributed to bringing what Basquiat accomplished back to the center of the conversation nearly a decade after his death, and in the process helped to birth a new era in contemporary art.

Doug Woodham is the managing partner of Art Fiduciary Advisors, an NY-based rm focused on providing advice on the nancial aspects of owning and selling ne art. He most recently served as president of the Americas for Christie’s and is the author of ArtCollectingToday: MarketInsightsforEveryonePassionateaboutArt. The artist known as Banksy has been creating works for over three decades and is one of the best-known artists of our age. Banksy has always believed the best place for his work is on a wall, where it’s free and accessible to everyone. That said, since 2002, he’s also created around fty-one print editions, producing an estimated 30,000 artworks. His Pictures on Walls (POW) project played a huge role in shaping his career and the street-art scene at large. This unauthorized guide to Banksy's print editions meticulously documents 174 unique prints, presenting an unparalleled visual catalog of these hugely collectible works.

In addition to making his art accessible to a larger audience, these prints often expand on themes seen in his wider body of work, making them essential in understanding his artistic development over the last two decades. Banksy initially o ered his prints, both signed and unsigned, for modest prices.

Organized by release year, with insightful commentary, essential details about each edition, and faithful and high- quality reproductions, Banksy: The Prints is the ultimate resource for exploring Banksy’s printed works.

From the Great Depression to World War II, the lives and work of British artists intersected with a world in crisis. A compelling group biography, Comrades in Art explores the political forces that shaped the development of modern art in Britain, tracing how artists set aside aesthetic di erences to mobilize on an unprecedented scale to resist fascism and campaign for cultural freedom and democracy.

Featuring some of the best-known names in British, European, and American art, such as Barbara Hepworth, Paul Nash, David Bomberg, Pablo Picasso, Oskar Kokoschka, Henry Moore, Stuart Davis, and Diego Rivera, Comrades in Art explores the lives of its diverse and talented protagonists. Taking the rst ten years of the Artists International Association (AIA) as his point of focus, author Andy Friend brings to life the captivating drama of the organization as it rapidly grew to attract the support of a majority of Britain’s aspiring and established artists, o ering new insights into art and culture during this decade of political extremes. By situating the AIA within a global context, and uncovering connections with Moscow, New York, Paris, Barcelona, and elsewhere, including the New Deal Federal Art Project, this impressive work of research and scholarship is a revealing read for anyone seeking to understand the dynamic interplay of politics and art during one of the most turbulent periods in modern history.

Museums face a reckoning. Thrust to the forefront of di cult conversations around toxic philanthropy, increased corporatization, decolonization, repatriation, and legacies of theft and looting, many of our cultural institutions are undergoing a period of radical transformation; seemingly rede ning their very function and mission to address new public concerns, such as: Who owns the past? How bloody is too bloody? And whose museum is this, truly?

Museums and Social Justice addresses these questions and more, shedding light on pressing issues such as why an oil giant attempted to sponsor an Arctic exhibition at the British Museum, why Berlin’s Humboldt Forum is exhibiting British looted objects from Benin, and why the Baltimore Museum of Art has made a public commitment to acquire more works by women artists. Using such events as case studies, author Maura Reilly engages with pioneering arguments in and around matters of diversity, access to heritage, decolonization, patrimony, and racial equality. She outlines speci c action plans to confront these challenges, avoid reputational controversy, and maintain con dence in our public institutions. The result is a provocative book by a leading voice within the museum community addressing the de ning issues facing these institutions today and for years to come.

In his fresh take on abstract art, now available in paperback and updated, noted art historian Pepe Karmel chronicles the movement from a global perspective, while embedding abstraction in a recognizable reality. Moving beyond the canonical terrain of abstract art, the author demonstrates how artists from around the world have used abstract imagery to express social, cultural, and spiritual experience.

Karmel builds this fresh approach to abstract art around ve inclusive themes: body, landscape, cosmology, architecture, and man-made signs and patterns. In the process, this history develops a series of narratives that go far beyond the established gures and movements traditionally associated with abstract art. Each narrative is complemented by a number of featured abstract works, arranged in thought-provoking pairings with accompanying extended captions that provide an in- depth analysis. This wide-ranging examination incorporates work from Asia, Australia, Africa, and South America, as well as Europe and North America, through artists ranging from Wu Guanzhong, Joan Miró, Jackson Pollock, to Hilma af Klint, and Odili Donald Odita. Breaking new ground, Karmel has forged a new history of this key art movement.

He is the author of more than twenty books including monographs on Braque, Jean Arp, and Malevich. A lavishly illustrated volume showcasing the Nordic modern artists whose work continues to in uence and inspire today.

Modern art from the Nordic countries—Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland—tends to be represented by a few famous artists, and an aesthetic known for combining originality and continuity of tradition. Although in uenced by the wider international art movements of the time, modern Nordic artists were also independently creative, developing styles unique to the region.

Providing a detailed overview of the greatest artworks of the period, this book also places the work in the context of each Nordic country as well as in the broader art world of the time. It also examines the signi cant role of women artists in the story of modern Nordic art, chronicling their signi cant artistic legacy as well as their key contribution to the women’s rights movement in Scandinavian society. The result is a comprehensive account of modern Nordic art in one impressive volume that is sure to be a de nitive account on the subject.

Franklin D. Roosevelt’s landslide victory in the 1932 US presidential election gave him a mandate to institute a “New Deal” for American citizens navigating the Great Depression and by doing so o er them “a more abundant life.” During the decade between 1933 and 1943, the New Deal art programs marked the largest federal investment in the arts in the history of the country. Tens of thousands of artists and artisans across the United States produced some 2,500 murals, 100,000 easel paintings, 17,000 sculptures, and 200,000 prints.

How should we understand the history and legacy of the New Deal art programs today? Marshaling new scholarship and original research, New Deal Art highlights the contributions of a diverse range of women, immigrant, working class, Indigenous, Black, Asian, Jewish, Latino, and LGBTQ+ artists. While previous studies have focused on the personalities and politics of government administrators, this book o ers a “history from below” that stresses the role of artists as activists through collective e orts such as the Artists Union and the American Artists' Congress. It explores topics that traditionally fall outside the purview of art history: art as therapy in prisons and hospitals, children’s art, community art centers and art education, and the place of handicrafts and applied arts. Above all, New Deal Art explores the question of art and democracy: What if art was treated as a natural resource to which all citizens had an equal right?

The standard reference since its rst publication in 1979, Performance Art continues its authoritative chronicling of one of the most important art forms to emerge in modern times. Art historian and curator RoseLee Goldberg has updated her magnum opus to re ect the current state of performance in an age where digital and web technologies are becoming increasingly dominant, as she shows how a medium once used in sporadic bursts of artistic dissent has become a worldwide phenomenon.

Performance is now the medium of choice for many creatives entering the global conversation of art and culture. As the medium has developed across Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas it has become one of the most popular art forms for articulating “di erence,” whether dealing with issues of identity, politics, race, or historical background. Marina Abramović, Matthew Barney, Sanford Biggers, Tania Bruguera, Patty Chang, Rashid Johnson, Autumn Knight, Pierre Huyghe, and Jacolby Satterwhite are among the many new and established artists whose work can now be seen in the context of other innovators in the eld from the Futurists and Dadaists to Yves Klein and Laurie Anderson. Goldberg explores contemporary artists’ approaches to politics, tradition, social engagement, and the art world itself, while evaluating the changing status of performance.

This revised edition includes an updated foreword, an expanded reading list, and a new chapter outlining developments in the second decade of the twenty- rst century in the elds of dance, architecture, technology, and virtual performance.

RoseLee Goldberg is an art historian, author, critic, and curator specializing in modern and contemporary performance art. Goldberg has curated the work of many prominent artists from Philip Glass to Cindy Sherman, and in 2004 founded Performa, a multidisciplinary arts organization dedicated to the research, development, and presentation of twenty- rstcentury visual art performance.

Chanel in Vogue includes two volumes: the rst volume is dedicated to the era of Gabrielle Chanel, and the second focuses on the work of her successors, Karl Lagerfeld and Virginie Viard, and to the present day. Since the 1990s, fashion imagery has evolved from the aspirational and glamorous into an experimental genre created by interdisciplinary artists, art directors, and photographers. The domestic space or where we live has acquired a key role as an intimate setting for this kind of playful exploration, in which personal stories are told, and fashion shots gain authenticity. Illustrated interviews with or editorials on twenty-two established and newer image-makers o er exceptional insights into this phenomenon. Featured photographers include Corinne Day, Tierney Gearon, Cli ord Prince King, and Tina Barney, to name a few.

For three decades, the fashion image has shifted its focus from high- end shoots to the idiosyncratic, Instagram-style practice of pictures taken at home. That home may be a house, apartment, or room—often, though not always, the antithesis of glamour and gloss. The Domestic Stage captures this fascination with the home as an “uncurated” setting for presenting an individual’s private life and relationships, and for professional commissions with edge. How this space merged with the fashion image is revealed through the words and work of twenty-two such image-makers. They include the pioneering Nigel Shafran; International Magic, who created virtual fashion shows with Martine Rose during the pandemic; and Carrie Mae Weems, whose 2024 Bottega Veneta campaign truly came “home”—to show A$AP Rocky enjoying time with his children. Each contributor’s commentary is candid and revealing, their images even more so. The result is a provocative new take on fashion photography and its transformation in recent years.

Adam Murray is a curator, researcher, and lecturer at Central Saint Martins, London. A respected authority on photography and the fashion image, he contributes regularly to AnOther and has curated exhibitions at Somerset House, London, and Open Eye Gallery, Liverpool. Murray lives in northwest England.

His career truly began when he became an assistant to Laurence Sackman, who taught him the photographer’s craft.

Roversi is famed for his use of large-format Polaroid lm to capture images of ethereal beauty, vulnerability, and romanticism. Aviary presents the work of more than fty internationally recognized photographers who explore our complex relationship with birds, questioning how we observe them and respond to their presence—and vice versa. Rather than being organized by eld of study or species, Aviary surveys the symbiotic relationship between animals and humans through six thematic chapters imagined as “Acts” in a theatrical pageant. Photographs of birds feature rarely in the early decades of photography: birds were too fast to be captured in ight and could not be depicted in color, limitations that took many years to rectify. Today, however, with superb technical means at their disposal, photographers have taken to the subject with great enthusiasm, inspired by our everincreasing understanding and appreciation of avian complexity. Taking an eclectic curatorial approach, authors Danaé Panchaud and William A. Ewing weave together photography from the diverse elds of art, documentary, fashion, portraiture, ornithology, and wildlife photography into six “Acts” that propose intriguing new dialogues and visual theater between these di erent modes of photographic expression. Aviary features over two hundred photographs from leading image-makers including Leila Je reys, Sarah Moon, Roger Ballen, Vik Muniz, Tim Flach, Viviane Sassen, Robert Clark, and Nadav Kander, among many others. An essential, visual study of the relationship—beautiful, complex, and occasionally dark—between humans and birds.

Danaé Panchaud is a curator and lecturer specializing in photography. She is the director of the Centre de la Photographie Genève and coauthor of Flora Photographica: The Flower in Contemporary Photography. William A. Ewing has been an author, lecturer, curator of photography, and museum director for more than fty years. His many publications on photography include The Body: Photographs of the Human Form, Civilization: The Way We Live Now, Edward Burtynsky: Essential Elements, and Flora Photographica: The Flower in Contemporary Photography

Having previously expressed no interest in color photography, Roger Ballen was inspired to engage with the medium after receiving a Leica SL camera as a gift in 2016. Opening to the potential of color in his work, Ballen used light in creative ways, exploring new avenues of experimentation. Spirits and Spaces eloquently captures the absurd and bizarre world of Roger Ballen, where animals and art brut–like drawings dominate, and humanity is reduced to obscure gures or fragmented body parts.

The color images in Spirits and Spaces, created in conjunction with Ballen’s artistic director, Marguerite Rossouw, were produced in a claustrophobic space, constructed of worn, wallpapered wooden panels and with minimalistic lighting. Here, in this dense, oppressive environment, Ballen creates what might be seen by many as a world that is unexplainable in words: one in which absurdity, chaos, comedy, and tragedy apparently exist side by side.

Both a visual revelation and an artistic evolution by one of contemporary photography’s most unique voices, Spirits and Spaces will be an essential and much-anticipated photobook for all Roger Ballen fans.

Roger Ballen is one of the most important and distinctive photographers working today. His previous books include Asylum of the Birds, The Theatre of Apparitions, The World According to Roger Ballen, and Ballenesque: Roger Ballen: A Retrospective

Around the world, shamanic traditions dating back thousands of years are being revived, recovered, and reinvented. Many people are increasingly turning to shamanic practices and rituals for community, connection to nature, and spiritual direction. Focusing on an expertly curated selection of ritual artifacts and visionary images, this book skillfully explores the roles of shamans around the world and throughout history, from the Mesolithic shamans of Germany and the Evenki shamans of northern and central Asia to the shamans of the Shang dynasty and the booming populations of neo-shamans in the West.

Beginning with a clear explanation of what we mean by “shaman,” author Max Carocci identi es three key elements of shamanic worldviews and practices: animistic models of the cosmos; communication between realities; and healing of body and soul. Beautifully illustrated throughout, this book features a compelling narrative text interspersed with analytical presentations of the key artifacts, artworks, and rituals pertinent to the chapter themes. Shamans examines a diverse range of visual subjects and decodes their symbolism, including the powerful adornments of a Siberian shaman’s coat, the psychotropic plants that facilitate trance states and interdimensional journeys, and the carved e gies that reveal the remarkable transformation of shamans into animals. Carocci makes the manifold meanings encoded in the forms, colors, and purposes of shamanic images and objects clear, painting a vibrant and in- depth picture of shamanic cultures past and present.

Max Carocci is a cultural and social anthropologist and is currently adjunct professor in art history and visual cultures at the American University in London. He has curated numerous exhibitions and collections for institutions, including the British Museum, the Horniman Museum, the Weltkulturen Museum in Frankfurt, Germany, and the Musée du Nouveau Monde in La Rochelle, France.

Mythology

September

$25.95 hardcover

(CAN $34.95)

The Maya reigned for almost four millennia and occupied large swathes of what is now southern Mexico and Central America. Their civilization was highly complex, divided into politically fragmented noble houses, which gave rise to a diverse mythology that can vary between groups and retellings. For example, there are three di erent myths about the origins of the sun and moon. In one of these creation myths, animals and objects rise up to torment humanity, while in another, pots shatter and speak, unleashing demons upon the people.

Elsewhere, heroes descend to the ballcourt of the underworld, where trees grow fruit in the likeness of severed heads, the ancestors converse with animals, and the Maize God is caught in a perpetual cycle of death and rebirth. To the Maya these were more than reside tales—these myths formed the foundation of their culture, weaving together their ancestral and primordial pasts into a cohesive and meaningful narrative.

Mallory Matsumoto skillfully evokes the vibrancy of Maya culture, from the peak of hieroglyphic tradition in the eighth century CE, through the invasions of the Spanish conquistadors, and up to the present day. The book draws from well-known texts such as the Books of Chilam Balam and the Popol Vuh, Spanish texts, as well as lesser-known sources; images; and Maya oral histories—all re ecting a history of contact and change, rather than a sealed- o past. Illustrated throughout, this volume highlights the rich, varied nature of Maya myths, o ering a deeper understanding of the communities that produced these captivating stories.

Mallory E. Matsumoto is assistant professor in the department of religious studies at the University of Texas at Austin. Her research, which draws on text, image, and archaeological remains, engages questions of language, material culture, and identity in indigenous Maya communities in colonial Mexico and Central America. Her books include Land, Politics, and Memory in Five Nija’ib’ K’iche’ Títulos: “The Title and Proof of Our Ancestors.”

An invaluable visual reference for designers and Morris admirers alike, this covetable gift book features full-color illustrations throughout.

William Morris: Pattern & Design begins with an introductory overview of Morris’s life and work. It explores how these iconic designs were created and printed in the late nineteenth century, and then shows the patterns, and many alternative colorways. The decade of each pattern is speci ed on each spread, and the vertical captions give as much uninterrupted space to the patterns as possible. This generously illustrated book showcases iconic designs including the famous Trellis, St. James's, and Strawberry Thief, alongside lesser known, but equally fascinating patterns by Morris and Morris & Co. designers such as May Morris, Kate Faulkner, and John Henry Dearle.

The book’s engaging design features a William Morris–inspired green text, and the portable, medium-sized, square format allows readers to ip through the book with ease and enjoy the artistry of Morris's textile and wallpaper designs.

The majority of our lives are spent indoors, yet we rarely, if ever, stop to ask ourselves the origins or reasons behind the ideas and forms of our interior spaces. From traditional nomadic dwellings to state- of-the-art airports, The Story of the Interior explores an exciting array of inside spaces from around the world to reveal how the fundamental elements of a room have evolved and endured.

Organized in three parts—The Room, The Private Interior, and The Public Interior—the book presents a fascinating acount of how the interior has been conceived and thought of from antiquity to the present day. By calling to attention the most basic elements of inside space—walls, doors, windows, furniture, ambience to name a few—this engaging exploration delves into how private and public interiors actively shape the way we live, work, learn, and play.

Using a thematic approach, author Graeme Brooker digs into the elements of the interior found in both historic spaces and cutting- edge contemporary interiors. The book spans a wide range of iconic and o beat examples. Brooker deftly guides readers through interiors as diverse as Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater, Olafur Eliasson’s The weather project, the Prada store in Marfa, Texas, and Sou Fujimoto’s NA House, as well as the rock- cut Buddhist temples of India, medieval European castles, and ancient Egyptian tombs, to unveil the drastically di erent and surprisingly similar spaces that surround us. The result is a fascinating tour of global interiors, tracing the genesis and evolution of these spaces and how they help us understand human presence and behavior.

Graeme Brooker is an interior designer with extensive experience in practice, education, and research. He is professor and head of interior design at the Royal College of Art in London. He has taught at institutions in the US, Europe, and Asia, and is the author of numerous books on the histories, theories, and processes of the interior.

Author Patrick Bingham-Hall sets the houses in context, arguing that climate, colonization, and modernism, as well as geopolitical events, increasing prosperity, and even air- conditioning since the end of World War II, have created a very speci c set of circumstances and therefore houses. This includes buildings with pitched roofs, broad overhangs and eaves, verandas, big doors, and windows, which optimize air ow and solar orientation. Larger-than-life, open to the elements, this is soaring architecture with a strong sense of place.
