Spider webs are drastically under-appreciated. Without them, the world as we know it would be overrun by insects: spiders catch and consume 800 million tonnes of insects every year, roughly the same weight as all the humans in the world. Because spider webs are so successfully hidden, very little is known about these beautiful but deadly traps. From classic orb webs, to spectacular tent webs, hidden trapdoor webs and water webs that attach to the surface of a flowing river, The Secret World of Spider Webs reveals the incredibly diverse ways spiders catch their prey. Featuring foil-stamped illustrations that accentuate the intricacy of spiders’ web designs, The Secret World of Spider Webs is a remarkable, beautiful and spine-tingling tribute to spiders.

WHICH WAY UP?

SEARCHING FOR A GLACIER

On 17 November, the glittering pinnacles of the Transantarctic Mountains loomed before them.

Although they looked like a fairytale, Amundsen knew that if he could not find a way through them, they would spell the end of his dreams. But luck was on his side. After searching for a few days, he found what he needed: a glacier 48 kilometres long stretching steeply up to the Polar Plateau. He called it the Axel Heiberg Glacier, in honour of one of his sponsors. With the rumble of avalanches echoing around them, and chasms and crevasses at every turn, the men and dogs battled their way up the glacier. On some of the steepest slopes, they had to use two dog teams per sledge and even do some hauling themselves. Incredibly, after just four days, they reached the edge of the Polar Plateau. Numb with exhaustion, they dragged themselves into their tents for a rest.

The dogs had done all that Amundsen could have hoped for – and more. So it was with great sadness that he now ordered 24 of them to be shot. This had always been part of his master plan. The dead dogs would provide much-needed food for the rest of the pack, and the men. What’s more, their fresh meat would ward off scurvy – a disease caused by a severe Vitamin C deficiency. This was a trick that Amundsen had learned on his first trip to Antarctica.

Naturally everyone was anxious to leave the camp, which they

Race to the South Pole

A two-sided story

Alexandra Stewart Illustrated by Sarah Wilkins

Follow the stories of two men in one historic race to reach the South Pole

In 1910, Captain Robert Falcon Scott and the team of the Terra Nova embarked on an intrepid journey to Antarctica. Their mission: to explore uncharted lands, carry out important scientific work and become the first to reach the South Pole. There was just one problem – Scott wasn’t the only one with his sights on the Pole! Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had spent his whole life dreaming of polar adventure. After narrowly missing the chance to be first to the North Pole, he was determined to win the race to the South.

In this two-sided story, readers will follow one man’s journey before flipping the book to see things from the other side. This novel approach to storytelling encourages young readers to look at historic events from different perspectives, and to develop empathy and critical thinking as they face both triumph and tragedy in this remarkable true story.

Children’s author Alexandra Stewart expertly weaves together history, natural history and STEM into an engaging narrative-driven tale, brought to life with original paintings by Sarah Wilkins.
