The Face Magazine : Culture Shift
Edited by Sabina Jaskot-Gill. With essays by Ekow Eshun, Jamie Morgan and Pete Paphides.
Celebrates The Face’s most iconic portraits, exploring its role in the evolution of fashion photography and its international and enduring impact on visual culture.
Ground-breaking British youth culture and style magazine TheFace established the careers of a generation of photographers, journalists, designers and models. Known for its distinctive, radical and of-the-minute design and its unflinching attitude, the magazine originally focused on music but branched into fashion and culture more widely, as well as encompassing political and social commentary. Initially running from 1980 to 2004, its strong inclusive stance, bold design and experimental approaches to photography feel fresh and relevant today.
TheFaceMagazine celebrates the magazine’s most iconic portraits including Kate Moss, Annie Lennox, Kurt Cobain, Iggy Pop, Snoop Dogg, David Bowie, Ewan McGregor, Madness, The Sex Pistols and Kylie Minogue. It features the voices of some of the key contributors to the original magazine and celebrates the ongoing legacy of the magazine’s imagery in British art, design and culture. It showcases striking and iconic portrait photographs from the likes of Miles Aldridge, Elaine Constantine, Corinne Day, David LaChapelle and Juergen Teller, alongside selected covers and spreads from the original print magazine.

Stanisław Wyspiański (1869–1907) is widely regarded as Poland’s greatest artist, whose work is just beginning to be appreciated outside of Central Europe. Best known as the founder of modern Polish drama, he was also an artist and applied arts designer. During his short career he made a number of striking portraits in pastel of his family and and contemporary Cracovians that collectively provide a fascinating insight into the cultural life of a nation under partition and striving for independence.
Wyspiański’s portraits. Full of colour and vitality, his works draw on indigenous folk traditions, but are executed in a progressive expressive style influenced by the years Wyspiański spent in Paris, and epitomise the ideals and aspirations of the Young Poland movement with which he is closely associated.

Edvard Munch (1863–1944) is widely regarded as one of the great artists of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Although he was lesser known for portraiture, his portraits were central to his art and vision. During the course of his long life he made hundreds of portraits of friends, patrons, models and above all himself, in a range of media that encompassed painting, drawing and print.
EdvardMunchPortraits explores the range of portraits Munch created during his lifetime. By placing his work in the cultural and historical background of his period, it provides readers with a greater understanding of the time in which his works were produced. This publication gives deep insight into the artist’s family and bohemian social circles, along with his German and Norwegian patrons and the friends who helped establish his reputation.

Pablo Picasso developed BoyLeadingaHorse(1905-06) from an unrealized mural during a pivotal period of evolution in his art. The youth in the painting exudes confidence, his clenched fist compelling the steed to follow him without any reins. The vigorous mark-making, relative lack of fine details, and varying hues of browns and greys are emblematic of a shift in Picasso’s practice, which would soon be replaced by the artist’s radical Cubist explorations in the ensuing years. In this volume of the One on One series, scholar Annemarie Iker offers a close examination of this composition, contextualizing it within the artist’s larger oeuvre.

One of the iconic architectural marvels of the postwar period, the Nakagin Capsule Tower in Tokyo was designed by the office of Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa and completed between 1970–72. The project comprised two steel and concrete towers outfitted with 140 prefabricated living capsules; each capsule was intended for single occupancy and came with its own ensuite bathroom, foldout desk, telephone, reel-to-reel tape player, Sony colour television and a ‘porthole’ window overlooking the city. In this volume of the MoMA One on One series, curator Evangelos Kotsioris delves into the groundbreaking design, construction, evolution and ultimate need for the demolition of this remarkable structure in 2022.

‘I have shown,’ wrote the Swedish artist Hilma af Klint, ‘that there is a connection between the plant world and the world of the soul.’ Her Nature Studies portfolio (1919–20), recently acquired by The Museum of Modern Art, New York, comprises 46 sheets of exquisitely rendered botanical drawings. Documenting each plant’s particular qualities along with Latin names, Swedish common names and dates of observation, af Klint follows the typical format of a botanical reference book, known as a Flora; however, hers is a Flora of the spirit, a mapping of the natural world in spiritual terms that would stand alongside any scientific resource. Carefully drawn and vividly coloured plants, flowers and lichen are juxtaposed with geometric forms: a blooming sunflower is echoed by three nested circles, a central dot, a solid red line, a ring of points; a white narcissus is set against a pinwheel of softened primary hues; a cluster of budding branches is accompanied by checkerboard boxes of dots and stroke.
Published in conjunction with the first exhibition of the rare portfolio, HilmaafKlint:WhatStandsBehindthe Flowers presents the 46 botanical drawings alongside contextualizing works, as well as translations of her notes and previously unpublished texts from her own journals. An overview essay by curator Jodi Hauptman examines af Klint’s strong connection to the natural and spiritual realms, while texts by Ewa Lajer-Burcharth, Lena Struwe and Laura Neufeld unpack the inspiration, imagery and beliefs behind these drawings.

Introduction
by Jodi Hauptman
A limited-edition facsimile of the full portfolio of 46 botanical drawings by Hilma af Klint, each on its own sheet and encased in a deluxe clamshell case.
Hilma af Klint’s Nature Studies portfolio, dated 1919–20, has been virtually unknown until now. Envisioned by af Klint as a botanical atlas and rendered in pencil and jewel-toned watercolors, the 46 drawings detail the plants of Sweden's lower peninsula, alongside the abstract diagrams she developed to express the interconnectedness of the natural and spiritual realms. Inspired by scientific breakthroughs that proved the existence of things we cannot see – atoms, X-rays, soundwaves and the like – af Klint used drawing as a method of investigation. Her portraits of plants are well studied and accurate, yet she intertwines the visible with the invisible, the abstract with the figurative.
This deluxe facsimile of the rare portfolio is published in a limited edition of 500. Each of the 46 drawings is presented on its own sheet at full scale, and encased in a luxe clamshell case. A booklet with a contextualizing essay by curator Jodi Hauptman provides insight into this new side of af Klint’s artistic output, and examines her strong connection to the natural world.

Jack Whitten (American, 1939–2018) changed the way we see art and society. He defied traditional boundaries between abstraction and representation, pictures and things, culture and technology, individual identity and global history. Raised under the ‘American Apartheid’ of the segregated South in the 1940s, Whitten undertook an extraordinary journey in becoming an artist, convinced that by changing form, he could help change the world. Despite pressure from peers to create figurative art, he was a key proponent of creating abstract art that responded to social turmoil; to his own identity as a Black artist; and to sea changes in technology and ecology. Over 50 extraordinary years, he invented new ways of painting through a series of artistic innovations and strategies that are the first of their kind.
Published to accompany the first retrospective of Whitten’s expansive practice, this richly illustrated catalogue presents the full range of his career across all media. An overview essay by curator Michelle Kuo and focused texts by acclaimed art historians, curators, conservators and artists on individual works and series present new research and scholarship, advancing our understanding of the artist’s work. A selection of Whitten’s own writings and previously unpublished archival materials brings into focus an artist deeply engaged with social issues, race, world politics, music and science, and sheds light on his infinitely complex and ambitious explorations of process, materials and form.

Linder
Danger Came Smiling
Rachel Thomas
Essays by Chris Kraus and Marina Warner
Interview by Gilly Fox
A major survey of the artistic provocateur and trailblazer Linder, offering an illuminating overview of 50 years of her thoughtprovoking work.
Linder first emerged in the late 1970s as a prominent figure within the dynamic landscapes of punk and postpunk music; her photomontage on the cover of Buzzcocks’ single ‘Orgasm Addict’ in 1977 became an iconic image of the punk scene. Following her punk period, Linder went on to become an internationally recognised artist renowned for her multifaceted practice. Her journey has been one of relentless exploration, venturing into realms as varied as fashion, music, performance, perfume, textiles and film. At the heart of her explorations lies a profound engagement with the poetics of protest, where artistic inquiry intertwines seamlessly with cultural critique.
Throughout her career, Linder has used photomontage as a potent instrument for dissecting and reshaping the portrayal and commercialisation of gender norms and sexual identity. Drawing from source materials extracted from magazines of the late twentieth century, she exposes the weighty stereotypes imposed on both ends of the gender spectrum: automobiles, DIY culture and pornography for men; fashion and domesticity for women. In addition to using found images from magazines, Linder has also used photographs of herself taking on various feminine personae, which navigate concepts of personal invention and the performative dimensions of identity. Her art is informed by a rich tapestry of influences spanning religious art, surrealism, mysticism and the everevolving landscape of social media.

New York-based artist Mickalene Thomas’ critically acclaimed and extensive body of work spans painting, collage, print, photography, video and immersive installations. With influences ranging from 19th-century painting to popular culture, Thomas’ art articulates a complex and empowering vision of womanhood while expanding on and subverting common definitions of beauty, sexuality, celebrity and politics.
This major survey publication further affirms Thomas’ status as a key figure of contemporary art. The book features an interview with the artist by Rachel Thomas, and is followed by essays from Beverly GuySheftall, Darnell L. Moore, Claudia Rankine, Ed Schad, Renée Mussai and Christine Y. Kim, which cover her distinct visual vocabulary, drawing on themes of intergenerational female empowerment, autobiography, memory and tenets of Black feminist theory. In particular, they explore how Thomas subverts art history to reclaim the notions of repose, rest and leisure in works that celebrate self-expression and joy. For the artist, repose is a radical act, pointing to ‘what is able to happen once you have the agency.’

Yoshitomo Nara
Yung Ma
Accompanies the first UK solo exhibition at a public institution by the Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara. Spanning four decades of the artist’s work, it offers readers a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the personal and creative world of this internationally acclaimed artist.
Yoshitomo Nara primarily identifies as a painter while working across a wide range of mediums, such as drawing, collage, sculpture, installation and materials including found objects, cardboard, wood, plaster, textile, ceramic and fibreglass. He is widely known for his bold images of children with large heads and wide eyes that challenge the viewers with their direct gaze and defiant stance. These captivating yet ominous characters are part of a wider visual vocabulary established by Nara to explore and communicate themes of home, isolation, resilience, belonging, regeneration, hope and freedom.
Organised thematically, the book provides a comprehensive overview of the evolution and breadth of Nara’s artistic expression. It conveys Nara’s singular aesthetic drawn from his formative experiences in Japan and his time in Germany, as well as his ongoing environmental and societal concerns, which are deeply rooted in nature and the communities of Japan’s northern Tōhoku region, where he grew up. Memories as a continuous flow runs through Nara’s work. This is in parallel with the inspiration he takes from popular music, which he has been listening to since childhood – folk songs by American singer-songwriters featuring antiwar messages, melancholic blues and, later, glam rock, punk and new wave.
The Hayward Gallery presentation is an expanded version of the touring exhibition from the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, and Museum Frieder Burda, Baden-Baden. It features a group of Nara’s most recent paintings, including several new works.
Yung Ma is Senior Curator at the Hayward Gallery.

Hiroshige: artist of the open road
Alfred Haft
Hiroshige was one of Japan’s most talented, prolific and popular artists. Famed for his landscapes, he was also a great observer of nature with a visionary approach to colour and brushwork. His legacy continues to influence and inspire artists today.
Over a career spanning four decades, the prolific Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) produced thousands of landscape and nature prints, hundreds of paintings commissioned by the samurai elite, as well as many illustrated books. His work appealed to every stratum of society. While some of his landscape prints, such as EveningSnow–Kanbara and Ohashi–EveningRain, are well-known examples of Japanese art, the full range of his output is less familiar.
Hiroshige came from a samurai family, but he crossed social boundaries and devoted himself to depicting popular customs and the world around him. His work is distinguished by an air of gentle grace and decorum, perhaps arising partly from his steady temperament. His calm artistic vision sustained his contemporaries through the uncertainties of daily life and changing times. A great colourist, he stands out for discovering a subtle lyricism in the experience of travel, and a bond between people and the natural world.
Featuring highlights from leading private collections of Hiroshige prints, alongside works by Hiroshige and other artists from the British Museum’s outstanding collection of Japanese art and from other major collections, this lavishly illustrated publication celebrates one of the world’s most accomplished artists.

Greek inscriptions can be found across the Mediterranean world. They had a variety of purposes, including recording honorific decrees, treaties between communities, laws, religious norms, financial accounts, dedications to deities and funerary monuments. Some inscriptions reveal an everyday function, or even a touch of humour, such as a baby feeder inscribed with the instruction ‘Drink, don’t drop!’ or a lead sling-stone that reads ‘Catch!’ They were not only written on monumental stone slabs; inscriptions also survive on lead sheets, gold and bronze plaques, perfume bottles, dice, jewellery and coins.
Inscriptions provide insight into the society and values of the Greek world. This book discusses people’s reasons for writing them, their physical form, their importance in understanding ancient Greek culture and their significance today.

The Tomb of the Unknown Craftsman
Grayson Perry
A paperback edition celebrating Perry's multimedia memorial dedicated to the work of anonymous craftspeople, created for the British Museum.
‘ The Tomb of an Unknown Craftsman is of a treasure hoard from a distinct civilisation. The difference is that it is a civilisation of one. The territory it springs from is my imagination. ... The relationship between my personal themes and obsessions and the vastness of world culture as represented in the British Museum is like a narrow pilgrimage trail across an infinite plain.’
— Grayson Perry
The centrepiece to Grayson Perry’s fascinating journey through the British Museum’s collection is a major artwork: a metal tomb in the form of a ship. It is encrusted with reliefs and artistic cargo based on, or even cast from, objects from the Museum. Its occupant sails into the afterlife surrounded by the talismans of many faiths and peoples, a memorial to all the anonymous craftspeople from centuries past. Around the tomb, other artworks – ceramics, tiles, cast metal sculpture, textiles and prints – are laid out in ritualistic symmetry, as if they once belonged somewhere else. Perry presents a personal selection of British Museum objects alongside his own works, connecting them thematically or aesthetically. This lavishly illustrated book includes an introduction by Perry and takes us to the fantasy world of a contemporary artist who never fails to challenge and unsettle his audience.

Ancient India
Sushma Jansari and Sureshkumar Muthukumaran
Explores ancient India
(c. 100 bce –600 ce) through three of its major religions – Jainism, Buddhism and Hinduism – to illuminate how they reflect political power, artistic innovation and changes in peoples’ daily lives.
Ancient India was a dynamic, cosmopolitan centre of creativity. The visual traditions of its major indigenous religions were closely interrelated, reflecting political power, changes in peoples’ daily lives and artistic innovation. Exported beyond the Indian subcontinent in antiquity, these three major religions – Jainism, Buddhism and Hinduism –are living traditions and their devotional works of art impact the daily life of billions of people across the world.
This major new publication traces the development of religious imagery from around 100 bce, when it focused on the depiction of nature spirits, to 600 ce, by which time devotional images of Jain, Buddhist and Hindu deities and teachers had taken shape. Moving from symbolic to human form, such imagery employed attributes, divine attendants and animal vehicles that we still recognise today and are found across the global diaspora. Examples of these ancient images are found not only across South Asia, but also in Central and Southeast Asia, China and Japan – and they transformed the religious landscape of these regions too.
The authors explore fascinating topics such as the first devotional images of the twenty-four jinas (enlightened Jain teachers); the transformation from symbolic depictions of the Buddha to those that showed him in bodily form for the first time; and the formalisation of divine representations and devotional sculpture in Hindu traditions. This beautifully illustrated book reveals the ancient roots of the images and depictions of these world religions that many will find familiar today.

Lesley Dumbrell (b1941) is one of Australia’s most remarkable abstract artists. A stalwart of the women’s art movement in the 1970s, Dumbrell is known for her sophisticated and lyrical abstract paintings and works on paper. Highly ordered and exactly rendered, her immersive and compelling work transports the viewer into worlds of vibrant rhythm, colour and sensation.
As a young woman, Dumbrell was inspired by the writings of Wassily Kandinsky and the work of Bridget Riley, whose paintings conveyed the power of abstract art to express memory and emotion, natural phenomena and human experience. Dumbrell’s remarkable facility with colour and grasp of the organising power of the grid remain at the heart of her distinctive and exploratory abstraction, sustained over five decades of practice in Melbourne, the Strathbogie Ranges of northern Victoria, and Bangkok, Thailand.

On the occasion of her first major solo exhibition, charting the Pakistan-born Australian artist’s 30-year career and her finely crafted contemporary miniature paintings.
Drawing on both historical and contemporary references, Qureshi works in the space between tradition and experimentation, in a practice that extends to collage and photography. Born in Pakistan, she trained at the National College of Arts in Lahore, where she learnt the painting traditions that had been brought to the Mughal courts from Persia in the 16th century and developed in the region. This book traces Qureshi’s 30-year career, from her early paintings in Lahore, in which she began to reimagine traditional forms, to their zenith beyond the page and into 3D sculpture with a new commissioned installation.

Art Gallery of New South Wales
Magritte
Edited by Nicholas Chambers
Published in association with a major survey of the work of the pioneering Belgian surrealist artist at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney.
René Magritte (1948–1967) is renowned for his thoughtprovoking and enigmatic paintings that challenge the viewer’s perception of reality. His exploration of the subconscious and the juxtaposition of ordinary objects in surreal contexts have left an indelible mark on the art world, influencing generations of artists and thinkers.
The exhibition is the first Magritte retrospective to be presented in Australia and includes approximately 100 artworks drawn from public and private collections in the Asia–Pacific, Europe and the United States. The accompanying book provides an engaging, accessible and in-depth survey of Magritte’s practice, giving audiences insights into the evolution of his art from the early 1920s until his final works of the 1960s.
The book features reproductions of the 100+ works in the exhibition alongside rarely seen archival materials, commercial work and photography. The images are accompanied by four essays and an interview with Magritte (originally recorded for Belgian television in 1965), which together offer nuanced perspectives on the aesthetic foundations of his work while also considering the social and artistic context for his practice.
An essay by the curator of Magritte, Nicholas Chambers, leads us through the arc of the exhibition, revealing the artist’s extraordinary capacity for innovation and reinvention.
Nicholas Chambers is Senior Curator of modern and contemporary international art at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

Women Artists & Designers at the National Trust
Dr Rachel Conroy
Introduction by Sandi Toksvig
This beautifully illustrated book takes a closer look at the women whose creativity has shaped the National Trust’s collections and, often, the experience of visitors to its places.
Spanning six centuries, WomenArtists&Designersat theNationalTrust explores the lives and work of women across a range of disciplines, including garden and interior design, photography, illustration, industrial design, fine art, studio pottery and textiles. The selection features both talented amateur artists and professionals who have shaped the art-historical canon (such as Eileen Agar, Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun, Rosalba Carriera and Barbara Hepworth), focusing on their unique contributions and achievements. The book covers works as diverse as the magnificent gardens created by Vita Sackville-West at Sissinghurst and a striking self-portrait by Angelica Kauffman; ranging from elegant, mass-produced ceramics by Susie Cooper, to a model of a Palmyran temple by lady’s maid Betty Ratcliffe.

The Shakers are by far the longest-lived American utopian experiment. Founded by Mother Ann Lee, who emigrated from Manchester, UK, to New York in 1774, the Society governed eighteen separate communities from Kentucky to Maine in 1840, numbering 4,000 to 6,000 members in total. The Shakers’ faith is based on the belief in the creation of paradise on earth through communal living, gender and racial equality, celibacy and pacifism.
Shaker crafts, critical to supporting and fostering daily communal life, involved proto-industrial and small series manufacture of furniture and tools; fabrics and clothing; the invention of small machines and mechanical devices; as well as medication and seeds. With its radically utilitarian and restrained aesthetic, Shaker design has gained a central place in the American and modern design canon and inspires generations of designers and architects up to the present day. TheShakers:AWorld intheMaking both examines the lasting impact of the Shaker legacy as well exploring as the more unexpected facets of their production, ideology and way of life from a contemporary perspective.

Ukrainian Modernism
Dmytro Soloviov
With an essay by Owen Hatherley
Edited by Damon Murray and Stephen Sorrell
The most comprehensive publication available on Ukraine’s overlooked modernist buildings.
What does Ukrainian Modernist architecture look like and why isn’t it better known in the west?
Photographer and architectural tour guide Dmytro Soloviov is fighting to preserve the disappearing modernist heritage of his native Ukraine. These innovative buildings are an extraordinary blend of function, avantgarde aesthetics and ingenious design, but despite these qualities, they remain largely unrecognised. This is a result of several factors, including the stigma of belonging to the Soviet era, corruption, neglect, as well as the ongoing threat of destruction from both unscrupulous developers and war.
From masterpieces such as the Kyiv Crematorium and Salut Hotel, to previously undocumented examples like the Uzhhorod Airport Terminal and the Novoarkhanhelsk Police Station, Soloviov has traversed Ukraine photographing the exteriors and interiors of these important buildings and their monumental art (mosaics, stained glass and sculptures). While the nation’s attention is consumed by more existential matters, he has documented the unique identity of one of the least catalogued periods of Soviet architecture, his images forming a singular record of an unexpected and rapidly disappearing legacy.
An introduction by renowned architecture critic Owen Hatherley, complete with historical images, cements these buildings in a cultural and political context. With over 120 examples across 240 pages, this publication is the most comprehensive available on the subject.

Siân Davey: The Garden
Beautiful and human portraits taken in Sian Davey's garden.
Andi Galdi Vinko: Sorry I Gave Birth I Disappeared But Now I’m Back
‘Why don’t we fill our back garden with wildflowers and bees, and the people we meet over the garden wall – we’ll invite them in to be photographed by you.’ This is what my son Luke announced in the kitchen, midwinter, our back garden abandoned for at least ten years.
What came next was a pilgrimage: an ongoing act to cultivate a space grounded in love, a reverential offering to humanity. In a short window of time, we worked intensively to clear our long-neglected garden. We collected stories from the people we met over the garden wall while we worked, which soon came to feel like an intimate, confessional space. As the garden evolved it became an expression of joy, interconnectedness, yearning, sexuality, and defiance. The garden became a metaphor for the human heart itself.
Siân Davey is a British photographer. Her work focuses on her family, community and self, and is informed by her background in psychology.

An honest look at motherhood through the photographer's own experience.
For a very long time motherhood was considered somewhat taboo in the art world. As long as I can remember, female role models I admired openly talked about their choice of career over family. Some might have had children but never talked about their insecurities or sacrifices. But as soon as a woman turns 30 she is often viewed as old and her biological clock ‘is ticking’. The years to make the choice between having children or being successful are short and coincide with the years when one or the other might happen but none are guaranteed.
Now I am a mother of two working on borrowed time hoping the years I’ve lost mothering can be written into my CV without guilt or shame.
Andi Galdi Vinko, is an internationally acclaimed artist working in photography, based in Budapest. Her work draws visual analogies between intensely personal and intimate experiences of motherhood and womanhood using documentary and staged photography.

Gideon Mendel: The Ward
Intimate and poignant photographs from the first dedicated HIV wards in London.
In 1993, Gideon Mendel spent a number of weeks photographing the Broderip and Charles Bell wards in Middlesex Hospital as part of the ‘Positive Lives’ project. All of the patients on the wards, many of whom were young, gay men, were having to face an early and painful death. These two wards at The Middlesex Hospital were some of the few dedicated AIDS wards that existed in London. Given the high levels of stigma and fear that existed at the time, the decision of these patients to allow themselves to be photographed was an act of considerable bravery. The Ward explores through Gideon Mendel’s evocative black-and-white photographs how it felt to live with HIV at a time when it was a veritable death sentence. It shows how the ward at the Middlesex Hospital became more like a second home, and the staff and patients friends.
Gideon Mendel is recognised as one of the world’s leading contemporary photographers, whose intimate style of image-making and long-term commitment to socially engaged projects has earned him international acclaim and many accolades, including six World Press Photo awards.

Where the Wild Lines Are
Illustrated Children’s Books from the Collection of Die Neue Sammlung, Munich
Foreword by Angelika Nollert With contributions from Martin Salisbury, Evelyn Arizpe and Morag Styles
A detailed and visual history of the last century of children’s book illustration.
Children’s books tell more than just stories. They stimulate the imagination, convey feelings and world views, and help children to explore the world. They appeal to children and adults alike through their idiosyncratic narratives, but above all through their diverse and unusual illustrations and individual styles. Their creative appeal lies in the variety of illustrative possibilities, which range from detailed watercolours and linocuts to woodcuts and minimalist drawings, and can also evolve into animations or digital applications.
WheretheWildLinesAre presents works from the end of the 19th century to the present day, bringing together books and illustrations for children from around the world that surprise and fascinate with their creative and sophisticated design. It explores landmark examples of children’s book design through four distinct lenses – colour, space, perspective and signs – taking a closer look at the ways artists use pop-ups, typography, primary colours and monotone, and giant and miniature perspectives, to engage the eye of young readers, enhance a text and address powerful emotions without words.
An interview with Martin Salisbury, leader of the world-renowned Children’s Book Illustration degree at the Cambridge School of Art, delves into the fusion and intersection of art and literature, and Morag Styles contributes an essay on the psychology of how children respond to picture books.

The Ghanaian painter Amoako Boafo is considered one of the most important voices from a new generation of Black artists. Boafo portrays his friends, acquaintances and people from public life, presenting a contemporary image of Black self-empowerment and self-perception. After graduating from art college in Accra, Boafo began studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in 2013, where he developed his signature style characterized by his unusual finger-painting technique. The people portrayed by Boafo embody the idea of Black identity that draws on its own culture, to be understood as an act of resistance against the racist labels of a predominantly white society. The artist’s intensive engagement with Black history is subtly reflected in his paintings that include motifs inspired by literary works by key pioneers of the Black Freedom Movement.
This beautifully illustrated catalogue accompanies the first exhibition staged of his work in Europe, at the Belvedere in Vienna, from October 2024 to January 2025. It features texts from the artist himself as well as British curator and writer Ekow Eshun and author of GhanaMust Go, Taiye Selasi.

Akseli Gallen-Kallela (1865–1931) was Finland’s most famous progressive artist around 1900 and a major figure in international modern art. At the turn of the century, Finland was a grand duchy striving for independence from Russian rule. Gallen-Kallela’s depictions of Finland’s people, myths, and nature played a key role in forming a national identity. At the same time, his modern visual language, developed in constant dialogue between Finnish sources of inspiration and influences from artistic centres such as Paris, Berlin, London and Vienna, brought him international acclaim. This English-Finnish bilingual catalogue invites readers to explore these fascinating interactions in Gallen-Kallela’s artistic engagement with his country and its people, the Finnish national epic Kalevala, the idea of the Gesamtkunstwerk (total work of art) and the Nordic landscape. The international dimension of Gallen-Kallela’s art is showcased by shining a spotlight on his contributions to the Vienna Secession exhibitions of 1901/02 and 1904.
The catalogue accompanies an exhibition at the Belvedere, Vienna, in collaboration with the Ateneum Art Museum in Helsinki.

It now has around twenty people spread between Nice and Paris and operates in various cities in France and abroad. The projects on which NP2F works are both architectural and urban and its areas of expertise are sport, housing, cultural and educational buildings, places of relaxation and restoration, and public spaces.
The issue contains the most important works of the studio made to date, preceded by a pair of critical essays by the architect and professor Djamel Klouche and the Argentine architect Marcelo Faiden. A conversation with the Chilean architect Felipe De Ferrari complements the monograph.

The house has gone from being an individual affair to becoming the built element with the greatest impact on the planet. In this study, Fernanda Canales analyses the evolution of this space over the last two centuries through projects, exhibitions and books that have transformed the ways of inhabiting towards a collective understanding of housing. MyHouse,YourCityoffers a journey through works that have attempted to solve the whole of life in a handful of square metres by challenging the limits between the public and the private, in an account that reveals the vastness of the universe of the domestic, which is at stake when imagining one’s own worlds that are also worlds for others. This book expands the meaning of ‘house’ by dismantling three erroneous assumptions – the house as a place of rest separate from work, the house as an object of private property and the house as a sanctuary for the nuclear family – in favour of other formats of belonging, coexistence and use.

In this architectural monograph, the French architects and winners of the 2021 Pritzker Prize, Anne Lacaton and Jean-Philippe Vassal, present their work through three eponymous concepts:
Free space: The ideal space would invariably be generous of size, efficiency and comfort. This predetermined aim is a fundamental principle for Lacaton and Vassal: it is no longer up for debate, and it forms the basis of all their projects.
Transformation: Never demolish, always add, transform, extend. Apply free space to existing structures and situations. Treat the place as an existing prerequisite. Take the values of the place as it is and integrate them into the project, never in opposition to it.
Habiter: Life, uses, making the space one’s own. Making the others and the inhabited space tangible through the frames of Karine Dana’s films, showing the life and inhabitants in nine built works by the architects.

Beginning in 1966, Per Kirkeby created more than 150 brick sculptures throughout his lifetime. Initially, Kirkeby was drawn to the essential qualities of bricks as a unit of architectural design and a symbol of human civilization – being the same size as the human hand. While Kirkeby was undoubtedly alluding to the simplicity and order of Minimalism at the time, the Danish artist was also looking beyond aesthetic purity to the pictorial and narrative possibilities of bricks.
Although Kirkeby is revered for his painting, his brick sculptures represent his most instantly recognisable work, in a material so familiar that it is almost invisible. At once ornamental, functional, architectural and purposeless, Kirkeby’s brick sculptures have become an iconic symbol of Danish modern art.
This is the second volume of a three-volume catalogue raisonné on the brick works, together offering a comprehensive overview of his output from 1966 until his death in 2018. This volume concentrates on Kirkeby’s unrealised brick sculptures, from 1983 to 2017. From smaller installations for exhibitions to private commissions and city planning projects, none of these sculptures were ever realised at their proposed site, and are presented to the public for the first time in this book. Contributions from the likes of Hans Ulrich Obrist and Robert Storr provide further context to these important works.

For more than 35 years, Jochen Lempert’s photographs have stood out as a singular oeuvre within contemporary art. A trained biologist, his gaze is marked by constant wonder at the natural world. Frogs, doves, swans, insects, plants, people, clouds, and the sea: nature populates Lempert’s photographs in all its variety. On closer examination, the photographs reveal an interplay of associations and echoes. Delicate forms are reproduced, playing both with such natural imagery as a butterfly’s wings, and with our means of perception.
Lempert is increasingly interested in the phenomena of perception and how it is translated into images. For all their photographic minimalism, always captured with the simplest means of an analogue camera or light-sensitive paper, Lempert’s pictures are full of poetic power and a profound knowledge of the NaturalSources of our existence.
Along with the stark, simple hanging of his works in exhibitions, artist’s books are one of his favourite ways of presenting his work.

Pissarro:AMeetingonSt.Thomasadds another dimension to our knowledge of the emergence of French Impressionism. In approximately 1850, the later ‘father’ of French Impressionism, Camille Pissarro (1830–1903) met the Danish painter Fritz Melbye (1826–69) in Pissarro’s hometown on St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, at that time a Danish colony. This book argues that Melbye is a ‘missing link’ between the Danish Golden Age and French Impressionism – and the now almost unknown Melbye thus had a significant influence on the beginning of Impressionism.
In 2017, the Ordrupgaard museum in Denmark held the exhibition Pissarro:AMeetingonSt.Thomason the occasion of the centenary of the sale of the Virgin Islands. This extended and revised book presents new research that the exhibition gave rise to.
Anne-Birgitte Fonsmark was Director of Ordrupgaard Museum from 1995 to 2003.

Yves Saint Laurent was a key artist of the 20th century. Today his name evokes the reefer jacket, the trench-coat, the Mondrian dress, the smoking jacket and women’s trouser suits. He is remembered as the man who gave the safari jacket a new lease of life, and as the man who stood out from the rest with his famous transparent dresses. The first fashion designer to parade Asian and African models on the catwalk, he also worked in tandem with the theatre and cinema. Furthermore, he was the first leading couturier to lend his name to a pret-à-porter range, Rive Gauche, while maintaining his haute couture activities. But what do we really know about the man beyond his renown?
Here, the author opens up the door to Yves Saint Laurent’s studio and invites us into the great creator’s nerve centre, where everything took place, where the work and artist became one. We see how Saint Laurent set about his creations and discover the secrets behind his approach, providing a voyage of initiation through his hideaway where the master alchemist shares his secret formulae.

Published to accompany the work’s debut at Whitechapel Gallery, this exhibition catalogue includes installation photography, texts by Olamiju Fajemisin and Alexis Pauline Gumbs, an interview between the artist and Bina von Stauffenberg, and poems by June Jordan.
An exploration of rebellion and transformation, Deadweight features four large-scale sculptural works that reflect the artist’s deep connection with the sea and her enduring fascination with shipwrecks. Combining force and fragility, the sharp, angular structures evoke material forms – anchors, a ship’s hull, the carcass of an unknown mammal – which also act as symbols of defiance. The title ‘Deadweight’, originally a nautical term for a ship’s carrying capacity, is inverted by White to signify disruption instead of stability. It symbolises a breaking point, suggesting that freedom might be achieved through abolition.
Mar Sáez: Terza Vita Lido di Ostia, Roma
Photographs by Mar Sáez
Text by Elena Medel
Explores freedom and affection in a seaside resort in a post-Covid world.
Elliot Ross: Crows Ascending
Photographs by Elliot Ross
A meditative photographic juxtaposition of the freedom of avian life with the restraints of lockdown life in the US.
This enchanting book looks at the fruitful opportunities of new interpersonal relationships after a two-year compulsory break. Rome, artistic and monumental, is the setting. The background is lively yet anonymous: empty spaces spared from ubiquitous tourism. It was here that Mar Sáez decided to observe the reappearing residents, and above all the yearning young lovers, on the beaches of Rome’s Ostia seaside resort.
Sáez looks at her subjects from a proximity that is as invasive as it is complicit. She wanted her photographs to be permeable to the intimacy of those portrayed. Sáez captures their vulnerability, in an agreed exchange between the photographer, the photographed and the future spectator during a moment of historical and social transition.
Mar Sáez is an internationally acclaimed multidisciplinary artist who works with photography, text, video, and sound. Elena Medel is a well-known Spanish novelist and poet.

During the pandemic years, Elliot Ross captured images of crows taking to the air from the roofs surrounding his apartment on Russian Hill in San Francisco, California. It became a contemplative piece of art about one of the most intelligent bird species in existence.
Crows Ascending is dedicated to the memory of Elliot’s younger brother Michael. Michael had a profound intellectual disability caused by lifelong epilepsy. He survived a severe case of Covid-19 in 2020 only to die of Parkinson’s-related pneumonia months later. It is also dedicated to the millions of others who have suffered or died in the United States – many due to government inaction – from Covid-19.
Elliot Ross’ work has been exhibited internationally and is in the permanent collections of many institutions internationally, including the Bibliotheque Nationale de France.

Accompanying an exhibition at London’s The Photographers’ Gallery in autumn 2024, this catalogue presents more than 150 unpublished photographs and prints from the archive of Letizia Battaglia, one of the most important figures of contemporary photography.
Born in Palermo in 1935, Battaglia documented everyday life, alongside the brutal reality of the Mafia and their victims in Sicily from the 1970s to the early 1990s. Her images are some of the best-known records of life in the shadow of the Mafia. In her relentless pursuit against organised crime, she used her camera to document the daily terror, putting it on the front page. Reporting for the daily newspaper L’Ora, she or one of her colleagues, was present at every major crime scene in the city over two decades.
This tender and brutal collection ranges from street protests in Milan to the glamour of Pier Paolo Pasolini, and from religious processions to the violent assassinations carried out by the Mafia. The pictures document the wealth of the area and at the same time the misery of a city almost abandoned to its fate.

Made in 1846, the painting commonly known as ‘The Delhi Panorama’ by the famous topographical artist Mazhar Ali Khan is the finest artistic rendering of Shahjahanabad ever made. It also affords a unique glimpse into the heart of the imperial palace in the Red Fort before much of it was destroyed after the 1857 Uprising. The 360º view of Delhi along with its extraordinary detailing of the cityscape makes the panorama not just an important historical document but also the masterpiece of its artist. The 5-metre long panorama, in the collection of the British Library since 1981, along with all the Persian and Urdu inscriptions has never before been published complete. Its publication here is accompanied by essays that put the panorama in its historical and artistic context with a commentary on the inscriptions that brings it to life.

The history of Mughal glass has been too long neglected, leading scholars to speculate as to whether these spectacular specimens are European imports, made from European glass but decorated in India, or of entirely Indian manufacture. MughalGlass:AHistoryofGlassmakingin Indiadelves into these questions while simultaneously exploring the development of new glass recipes, the impact of increased maritime trade, the Mughal emperors’ penchant for luxury goods, and the influence of colonial consumption in India.
With a comprehensive catalogue of Mughal glass objects gathered from both public and private collections around the world, this book offers an authentic account of some of the most beautiful pieces from India.
