Francis Bacon: A Self-Portrait in Words Michael Peppiatt Foreword by Colm Tóibín

A new selection of letters, statements and interviews reveal the preoccupations, thoughts and ideas of Francis Bacon, one of the 20th century’s most influential and important artists. Bacon’s letters mirror and reveal his dominant preoccupations at different points throughout his long career. Most of Bacon’s letters have never been published and include several that he wrote to the author. Together with photographs, archive material and works by the artist are numerous reproductions of Bacon’s characteristic handwriting, from the briefest jottings and notes to more extensive letters and statements. Bacon frequently came up with memorable epithets and definitions. He delighted in doing with words what he set out to do in painting: ‘I like phrases that cut me.’ Michael Peppiatt explores the personal legacy of one of the 20th century’s most important painters and presents a compelling verbal self-portrait that reveals both man and artist.

The first book to consider Kiefer’s photography and use of photographs in his wider artistic practice. Known for his monumental painting and installations, the internationally celebrated artist Anselm Kiefer’s works are marked by a constant questioning of history and collective memory. Born in Germany two months before the Nazi capitulation in 1945, Kiefer’s reflections on post-war identity, loss, and shared experience, nourished by myths and literature, create an unparalleled breadth of imagery. The use of photography as both practice and source material is a little-known aspect of Kiefer’s art that has played a central role throughout his career. This book presents over 130 works charting the artist’s relationship with photography, and his investigations into what images reveal.

Georgia O’Keeffe: In The West Edited by Nicholas Callaway and Doris Bry

In chronological order, the O’Keeffe paintings that were inspired by the landscape of New Mexico are reproduced in this oversize volume, a companion to Georgia O’Keefe: 100 Flowers. One always seems driven to oxymoron in describing these paintings: an intellectual lushness of hollows and spaces, controlled forms and explosive color. Georgia O’Keeffe: In the West, is the definitive in-depth look at the culminating period in Georgia O’Keeffe’s life and work in the American Southwest. This book features the paintings, both widely published and previously unknown, that linked Georgia O’Keeffe and the Southwest forever in the collective American consciousness.

Everything is motionless, these rooms are located out of time.” — Karl Ove Knausgaard, Mamma Andersson: A Storm Warning

Erased de Kooning Drawing is an artwork that radically challenged the very definition of art and questioned the notion of the artist as creator. Three American artists were involved in its creation: In 1953, Robert Rauschenberg erased a drawing by Willem de Kooning, who had somewhat reluctantly been giving his consent. Numerous artists referenced the work and it became a touchstone in Rauschenberg’s oeuvre.

Andrea Incontri

Andrea Incontri delved into his passion for art and illustration when, in 2016, he started creating his now iconic Tipe Umane. The vivid colours of Morocco as seen by master of colour photography Harry Gruyaert. When Harry Gruyaert first visited Morocco in 1972, it was love at first sight. On every return visit, he has tried to relive that initial feeling of enchantment, the splendid harmony between form and colour, people and nature. From the High Atlas mountains to the desert, from rural areas to the bustling streets of Marrakech and Essaouira, Gruyaert’s photographs take us on a dreamlike cinematic journey through a reality that is nonetheless highly physical, its textures shaped by light and shadow. Each image has its own power and all of them reflect the importance of family, community and faith to the people of Morocco, as well as Gruyaert’s own innate curiosity and desire to understand different realities.

Her images reveal the incredible details of nature’s ingenious constructions. The artist manages to combine both the fleetingness of a drawing made with light and the preservation of a photograph. Four essays by renowned curators provide insight into the artist’s processoriented working method, the interweaving of analogue and digital technology in her practice, and contextualize An Apparition of Memory within Western and Japanese photographic and art history.

Otherworldly Portraits in an Age of Rising Sea Levels SINK / RISE is the third chapter of The Day May Break, Nick Brandt’s ongoing global series portraying people and animals that have been impacted by environmental degradation and destruction. This third chapter focuses on South Pacific Islanders impacted by climate change and serves as a stark reminder of the looming reality many island nations face. The images—all shot in-camera underwater—are hauntingly beautiful. But beyond the immediate visual impact, Brandt’s work delves deeper, asking: how did we get here? What does the future hold for these communities? And how can we mitigate, if not reverse, the damage? Brandt’s emphatic portraits bridge the often abstract concept of climate change and are a reminder that behind every statistic about rising sea levels, there’s a tangible human story.

I.M. Pei Life Is Architecture Edited by Shirley Surya and Aric Chen

The story of internationally renowned architect I. M. Pei’s (1917–2019) life and work, including such instantly recognisable buildings as the glass pyramid at the Louvre, Paris, and the National Gallery of Art’s extension in Washington, D.C. When Chinese-American architect I. M. Pei died in 2019, the New York writer and critic Paul Goldberger said it was ‘the end of an architectural era’. And yet Pei – one of the most prominent architects of the 20th century whose instantly recognisable buildings include the glass pyramid at the Louvre, Paris; the extension to the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; the Museum of Islamic Art, Doha, Qatar; and the Bank of China tower, Hong Kong – remains a remote figure in the architectural canon. Through a narrative of hitherto unpublished archival material, new photography, specially commissioned essays, and brief commentaries by scholars, influential practitioners and Pei’s closest collaborators, this book presents the unknown Pei and tells the story of a master whose buildings dazzle the world.

Inside Yucatán is an ode to the merging of the ancient with the contemporary. At the turn of the 20th century, more millionaires lived in Mérida than in any other city in the world, building and transforming breathtaking, lavish homes nestled into the surrounding tropical greenery like hidden jewels. Over time, nature conquered, leaving crumbling structures in place of what were once vibrant, ornatelydecorated estates.

North Extracts from visual identities Sean Perkins

The long-awaited monograph of the UK’s leading graphic design and branding agency. The world is full of design companies, but none of them are like North. Formed in 1995 by Sean Perkins, the studio has always followed a highly individualistic path. This individualism manifests itself in many ways: most notably in the absence of a densely populated studio website; there are no hyperactive social media feeds; even the studio’s name, derived from Perkins’ origins in the unmetropolitan north of England, stands for frill-free, plain speaking, visual directness. It’s almost as if North is a well-kept secret. Yet the group has a devoted worldwide following, and attracts myriad clients keen to hire them for their ability to produce memorable and carefully engineered visual identities. North’s first monograph showcases a rich crop of brand identities, packaging, exhibitions, books, posters and logos. It includes work for Tate, Southbank, Munch (Oslo), Samsung, Meta, The Royal Mint and M+ (Hong Kong). Engaging readers with 300 pages of articulate and eloquent visual expression, like North itself, the book is unlike other design books. That’s what makes it a North book.

Realized in collaboration with the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague, this book features the works by six major artists of contemporary glass sculpture (Vaclav Cigler, Vladimir Kopecky, Stanislav Libensky, Jaroslava Brychtova, René Roubicek, Miluse Roubickova), born in the Czech lands in the 1920s and 1930s.

Bohemian Glass: The Great Masters Edited by Caterina Tognon and Sylva Petrova

These artists endured the largestever military conflict in Europe, followed by a brief respite of freedom and democracy, only to be plunged into totalitarian domination in 1948, which they could finally shed to return to standards of European democracy after 1989. These great masters initiated and nurtured a relatively “new” mode of glassmaking, “artistic glass”. 240 colour illustrations 30.5 x 23.5 cm 200pp HB ISBN 978 8 857 249858 Skira Editore May GBP 40

Since 1968, he was a forerunner in the acquisition and preservation of clothing heritage, whether of haute couture, ready-to-wear or everyday use. This passion led him to acquire the most beautiful pieces by Madeleine Vionnet, Paul Poiret, Jean Patou or Cristóbal Balenciaga and Madame Grès, all houses largely represented in his collection. Without ever revealing it to the eyes in the world, Alaïa has built up the largest private collection of costumes and fashion, to which are added countless accessories, photographs, graphic documents and drawings signed. A selection of nearly one hundred and forty pieces the most significant of his taste for timelessness is here for the first time presented.

Flowers in every form inspired fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent, serving as a leitmotif in his work. His passion for plants manifested itself in countless patterns and techniques, and he adorned women in floral appliqués, prints, and embroideries. From a thousand and one rose buds to sprigs of lily of the valley, from an avalanche of bougainvillea to delicate poppy touches, and from sheaves of wheat to majestic lilies, nature was an essential part of his visual palette. Through the discerning eyes of Olivier Saillard, this veritable garden of Yves Saint Laurent’s designs—culled from a broad range of styles—metamorphoses into a bouquet of flowering silhouettes. This book accompanies a duo of exhibitions at the Musées Yves Saint Laurent in Paris and Marrakesh in 2024 and 2025.

For decades, the popular image of the Mexica people – better known today as the Aztecs – has been defined by the Spaniards who conquered them. Their salacious stories have masked a complex world of religious belief.

‘What is worse than Nero? What is better than Nero’s Baths?’ – so wrote the poet Martial in the first century AD, demonstrating the power that buildings have on public consciousness. In ancient Rome, who built a monument and why mattered as much as its physical structure.

Ancient Rome in Fifty Monuments Paul Roberts

Paul Roberts takes the reader on a tour of ancient Rome, vividly evoking the sights and sounds of the city: from the roar of the crowds at the Circus Maximus, to the dazzling gleam of the marble- and mosaic-covered baths of Caracalla and Diocletian. He tells this story emperor by emperor, drawing out the political, social and cultural backdrop and ultimately the very human motivations that gave rise to their construction – and destruction. 185 colour illustrations 24.6 x 18.6 cm 256pp HB ISBN 978 0 500 025680 Thames and Hudson Ltd April GBP 30

The Roman army has been immortalised in heroic art and screen epics, but what was life really like for an ordinary soldier? This book tells the story of everyday life in the army – including the experiences of women and enslaved people – through a range of rare objects and testimonies. These include letters from Apion and Terentianus, young Egyptian soldiers writing home to their families; the tombstone of 4-year-old Vacia, a touching reminder of the presence of children near forts; the remains of a soldier found at Herculaneum, killed in the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79; and a board game played by soldiers in their spare time.

This anthology compiles the best-known discussions of the topic. From Thucydides’ History of the Peloponnesian War, Machiavelli’s Discourses and Friedrich Nietzsche’s “The Use and Abuse of History” to more contemporary studies on the subject such as E.H. Carr’s.
