Art
David Hockney: Normandy Portraits accompanies a major exhibition on David Hockney at the National Portrait Gallery, London. It reveals new portraits painted in Hockney’s Normandy Studio between 2020 and 2022. David Hockney: Normandy Portraits illustrates around 40 acrylic on canvas works painted by Hockney at his Normandy studio – depicting his friends and visitors, including his partner JP, pop-star sensation Harry Styles, and the artist himself. This image-led book product will showcase a series of some previously unseen portraits, uninterrupted by text, to allow readers to engage directly with the artworks. These works highlight the ongoing importance of portraiture within the artist’s practice and demonstrate his sentiment that ‘drawings and paintings … are a lot better than photographs to give you a sense of the person’.
Hockney returned to painting after an intensive period spent depicting the Normandy landscape using an iPad. The portraits were painted quickly and directly onto the canvas without under drawing. As Hockney has said ‘to do a portrait slowly is a bit of a contradiction’.

Tsujimura has held solo exhibitions around the world and his works have been acquired from Japan to Berlin to New York by the world’s most prestigious museums, including the Met and The British Museum.

Bauhaus Goes West Modern art and design in Britain and America Alan Powers
Bauhaus Goes West is a story of cultural exchange, not only between the Bauhaus émigrés and the countries to which they moved, but also in the other direction, focusing in particular on Britain. Most significantly, perhaps, it considers in detail the presence in the UK during the 1930s of three of the school’s most important figures – Gropius, Marcel Breuer and László MoholyNagy – using meticulous research to tell for the first time the stories of their British experiences in parallel. 80 colour; 40 B/W illustrations 19.8 x 12.9 cm 312pp PB ISBN 978 0 500 295861 Thames and Hudson Ltd February GBP 12.99

The story of modern British art history told through the stories of its women. Consider for a moment the history of modern art in Britain; you may struggle to land on a narrative that features very many women. In the decades after women won the vote in Britain, the fortunes of women artists were shaped by war, domesticity, continued oppressions and spirited resistance. Some succeeded in forging creative careers; others were thwarted by the odds stacked against them. Weaving devastating individual stories with playful critique, British Women Artists reveals this hidden history.

Her forte is using non-traditional materials, and particularly textiles, to create monumental and expansive works that intrigue, inspire and entertain the viewer. This book focuses on her extraordinary works in textiles, and highlights in particular her ‘Valkyries’ series, vibrant patchwork extravaganzas that weave together knitting and crochet with silk, velvets, recycled clothes and industrially produced textiles embellished with Portuguese tassels, crystals and beads. Essays by Enrique Juncosa and Crispin Sartwell offer thoughtful and in-depth overviews of her work and its development over the past fourteen years. 294 illustrations 32 x 29 cm 336pp HB ISBN 978 0 993 322006 Albion Barn March GBP 70
The paintings of Ken Grimes are strikingly honest, deceptively simple, and decidedly interstellar. Over several decades, Grimes has developed his singular style—using text, numbers, outer space iconography, and geometric shapes painted primarily in stark black and white—to prompt his audience to consider the possibilities and implications of alien contact with earth. Showcasing art from Grimes’s long career, this book catalogs the endless variations on a theme produced by an absolutely unique painter during a lifetime devoted to the mysteries of extraterrestrial life.

Yves Clerc Text by André Comte-Sponville

”It has become increasingly clear to me that the pleasure of painting lies in the subtle interplay between what the picture shows and what is says” –Yves Clerc Yves Clerc began his career in drawing and photography, before turning to painting and abstraction, followed by figuration. He offers us a poetic vision of the world, where shimmering colors rub shoulders with flat blacks. Transparency and its staging are his favorite themes. Clerc loves texture and plays with boundaries: he paints long, crumpled draperies that he creates with a juxtaposition of layers of paint, but also of techniques – oil on canvas, acrylic, drawing, painting on photo. 120 colour illustrations 30 x 30 cm 168pp HB ISBN 978 2 370 742094 Editions Skira Paris February GBP 36
The first monograph in English on a major Polish painter. Józef Halas (1927-2015) is one of the major Polish painters of his generation. Active in Wroclaw from 1949 until his death, first as a student and then as an artist and teacher, he left a unique body of work that, like many of those built largely during the Cold War, remained long unrecognized in Western Europe and North America. There is no doubt that Józef Halas must now be counted as one of the important players in this global history.

While there has been considerable interest in Pablo Picasso’s late work over the past several decades, and some of that interest directed at the artist’s work in the linoleum print medium, there remains much to discover regarding this aspect of his prodigious printmaking activities, and specifically on the role played by the progressive proof. There has been an uptick in the acquisition of these sets of proofs by museums and private collectors over the past twenty years but exhibitions and published accounts have lagged behind.

Unknown to many, Niko Pirosmani is revered as a legend in his native Georgia. Conveying a sense of poignant empathy, his portraits, animal paintings, landscapes and scenes from everyday life painted around 1900 in a flourishing Tbilisi draw on medieval iconography and testify to a deeply felt sense of belonging. This catalogue demonstrates Pirosmani’s qualities in numerous illustrations, showing how his rapid brushstrokes on black oilcloth give the sparsely applied colors a glow as if coming from a dark depth. Pirosmani was a master of concentration-and a storyteller.

In doing so, they introduced innovative art movements to the public and helped Impressionism and Symbolism, for example, to achieve a breakthrough in the German-speaking region. In the spirit of Piene’s transatlantic career, this richly illustrated catalogue features essays by emerging and established art historians and curators from the U.S. and Europe. Shedding light on the lifeaffirming vision Piene developed in the wake of World War II, these texts consider the ambition of his work in a range of media and contexts.

The turn of the nineteenth century saw an extraordinary flowering of invention in architecture and design, leading to the emergence of two contrasting styles: Art Nouveau and the International Style. Professor Nikolaus Pevsner brings clarity to this period of dynamic change by tracing the origins of twentieth-century ideas in architecture and the applied arts.

Earth, Sky & Water Houses in the Nordic Style Mette Lange Afterword by Kenneth Frampton
Instantly calming houses in remote Scandinavian locations that will make you want to escape into nature. In a world of starchitects competing to design ever taller glass and steel megaliths, there are still some architects designing with natural materials at a human scale, for comfort, longevity and visual delight. Mette Lange is one such architect, creating beautiful, unpretentious homes in spectacular scenery that offer visual inspiration for homebuilders and dreamers alike. Earth, Sky and Water presents 15 houses designed by Mette with first-person project texts describing Mette’s unique practice of camping on-site at the start of each design process, and detailing the thinking behind each house’s main features. As well as a visual feast of deceptively simple Scandinavian summerhouses that will leave the reader yearning for one of their own, the book offers a blueprint for aspiring architects on how to run their own sustainable studio.

Architectural patronage was crucial for the thinking of Aby Warburg and his circle. In Hamburg the purpose-designed Kulturwissenschaftliche Bibliothek Warburg, completed in 1926, organized Warburg’s remarkable library. This pattern of seminal architectural commissioning continued, culminating in the construction of the library’s present home at Woburn Square, Bloomsbury in 1958. The book follows this history and shows how the Warburg scholars projected a connection between their own physical occupancy of architectural space and their shared ideas about intellectual order, cultural survival, and memory. 45 illustrations 28 x 21 cm 112pp HB ISBN 978 3 775 755207 Hatje Cantz Verlag March GBP 28

Photography
120 colour; 74 B/W illustrations 21.6 x 17.2 cm 224pp PB ISBN 978 0 500 297896 Thames and Hudson Ltd January GBP 20
Traces a key turning point in the history of photography: the young Joel Meyerowitz’s early experiments in colour photography. Just how, when and why US fine-art photographers switched from black-andwhite image-making, which was prized within the gallery system, to colour photography, once seen as the preserve of the holiday snapper, has been the cause of much debate. In this book, Meyerowitz tells the story of his early days as a photographer when he was told that serious photographers took black & white pictures. ‘But why?’ he asked, ‘when the world is in colour?’ An early advocate of colour photography, Joel Meyerowitz has impacted and influenced generations of artists. For fifty-eight years, the master photographer has documented the US’s ever-changing social landscape.

Saul Leiter was one of those photographers who sought neither fame nor commercial success, despite his talent for imagemaking. Born in Pittsburgh, he spent his entire adult life in New York City’s East Village, in an intensely creative environment where ideas from Europe and America came together and intermingled. His mastery of colour is displayed in unconventional cityscapes in which reflections, transparency, complex framing and mirroring effects are married to a very personal printing style, creating a unique kind of urban view.

The Bicycle as a Utopia Cycling is not just a form of locomotion. Bike culture is in constant interaction with fashion, music, design, politics and urban planning. Cycling is a way of life and a form of protest. This book shows the wild, subversive side of cycling and the powerful bond it can create between people. It aims to inspire utopian thinking and show where the bike can take us. Here, the bicycle is presented as a vehicle for communal action that has the potential to change life in the city and, ultimately, the city itself.
