Ed Quarters As most of us will be preparing to go for the Reading Toy Run after the famous club Christmas Dinner, I will be forced to use the car rather than my bike as it is stuck in our garage which had faulty shutter door during the week resulting in both our cars and the two bikes stuck in! Not something I am pleased about as the bike was supposed to be all dressed up in lights and Christmas decoration for the event. Any way it also meant that I got some time to finish up the magazine, which was a daunting task due to lack of contributions! However, the team did support, and we do have an interesting line up from a Christmas poem, to Windsor Toy run pictures, New biker’s ride and not to mention a great article from David on bike maintenance and upkeep! Christmas is around the corner now and 2019 coming to an end! With this change we should be looking forward to and planning our next year’s rides and events about which Nick & John have mentioned. The latest issue of HOG magazine has Global events calendar for those who would like to plan ahead. I will summarize this in the next month’s issue. Meanwhile I would like to wish all of you a Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and safe riding so you wish to do over the coming wintery weeks! to: ons rg.uk i s mis g.o uk sub lleyho mag. r u g a o v o y s h nd ame w.tv Se h ww @t o t r ad at i d e o l up Or

Hi All. Season’s greetings and a warm welcome to all, by the time you have this magazine in your hands, Christmas will be just a week or so away ! It seemed to creep up on us really quickly this year and I hope that you are mostly ready to put your annual festive plans into action. Whether you use the time to catch up with friends and relatives, to take a break and have some downside or even to catch up on some of your chores, I hope that you have a really great time. Recently, our ride calendar has slowed and some of you will have already stood up your ride to keep it out of the salt. One of the highlights this time of year is the Reading Toy Run, operated and organised each year by Reading Christian Motorcyclists. At the time of writing we are making final plans to join as we do every year, and to arrange marshalling cover at the Showcase Roundabout (just down the road from the dealership). The Chapter Christmas Party will have also passed by the time you get this edition. Once again at the Holiday Inn in Maidenhead, I am sure you will all be discussing the events of that night at our Christmas club night at Reading Harley Davidson. 4

Committee nominations have now closed for 2020 and your current leadership group is reviewing applications, speaking to applicants and preparing the ground for changes and additions to next year’s line-up. It i s important to note that whilst nominations for committee positions is closed, we are always happy to discuss the possibility of joining the roadcrew at any time of the year. If you think you can help and are interested in taking a more active role in our team please come and find me, speak to any committee member and let us know that you are interested. If you haven’t already put a note in your new diary, please make a firm note of 4th January, fresh into the new year, a Saturday Social at the Coach and Horses, Chisel Hampton with a special treat beforehand at the Aston Martin Heritage Museum in Wallingford. Full details in the calendar and interest forms will be available at the Christmas club night. The Ladies of Harley Christmas Dinner in the New Year seems to be well subscribed to this year. I hope that the Stafferton Lodge are ready for you ladies! Fellas, escorting their ladies to dinner are invited to join me for a bevvy in a nearby hostelry. We will scoot down the road to the George on the Green at Holyport where i will be saying a fond farewell as chapter director. A few important notes for your calendar next year, get these dates into your new diary the moment you have it! First and most important is the TVHOG Valley Rally. We need your support for a great rally this year, our biggest and most talked about comment from Valley Rally goers is how friendly and welcoming our chapter is. So, book 5

your ticket, come along and help us show the HOG world how we make our rally on of the highlights of the year. Thames Valley are again supporting Thunder in the Glens as a Chapter, with a ride to the rally leaving on the Thursday, overnighting near Carlisle and returning the following Monday with an overnight stop near Newcastle on Monday night. You will need to block out Thursday 27th Aug to Tuesday 1st Sept. Also, next year we will be leading Thames Valley Chapter to a weekend at the Royal Agricultural University in Cirencester at the Convergence Rally. Dates for the diary are 14th to 16th August. The college and grounds are an ideal site for our group with onsite accommodation, breakfast and evening meals all in the cost. Do not forget our ride to the Jersey Rally in September, for yiou would have already signed up for! Please accept my warmest regards for a fun and peaceful Christmas and all the very best for a successful and prosperous 2020. Nick

TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS.... Twas the night before Christmas, all through the garages Not a motorcycle was rumbling, 'cept for Santa Claus' The leathers were hung in the closet with care In hopes that nice weather soon would be there. The bikes were all nestled snug in their covers With visions of tarmac and burning up rubber Their owner there, ready for his nightcap Settling down for a long winter nap. When out on the street, arose such a rumble He sprang from the bed as he started to grumble When what to his wondering eyes should appear Was a pack of motorcycles, with riders and gear. With one old rider so lively and quick He knew in a moment it was biker St. Nick All dressed in leather, from his head to his foot His clothes were all splattered in mud and with soot. A bundle of bike parts he had flung on his back Down the chimney he came, with a big red sack He spoke not a word but went straight to his work As he filled all the biker’s boots, then turned with a jerk. And laying a finger aside of his nose, 8

And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose He sprang on his motorcycle, to his team gave a sign As they cracked their throttles and got into line. Now Honda, Now Harley, Now Triumph, and Beemer, Now Kawasaki, Now Suzuki, all polished to shimmer But I heard him exclaim as he roared out of sight Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night! Softail Scriblings Hi All, We seem to be right into winter now with weather warnings of snow and the gritting lorries out locally. The joint TV / Hogsback memorial ride stayed dry which was nice, and I’ve only been out a couple of times since then. The bikes are now covered with AC50 for winter so hopefully there will be a few nice days to get out for a ride. This weekend coming (as I write this) is the Reading Toy Run so fingers crossed for a dry day, then after that no firm plans. By the time you read this the Christmas Dinner will have come on gone and we will be well into celebrations at the dealership for December club night. Preparations are now underway for next year’s events and riding calendar with some old favourites and some great new ideas and plans – the January Saturday Social should be good! Nominations for next year’s committee positions closed at the end of November and we are now in the process of finalising appointments in plenty of time for the AGM in January. The Chapter Mileage Challenge has been completed and calculated, to be announced at December club night, if you missed getting mileages to me they can still be recorded for this year towards your lifetime miles if you get them to me before Christmas. Finally, a reminder that Valley Rally tickets are now available and can be purchased at Club Night from Jamie or me by cash, card or cheque. Cheers, John Green Assistant Director 16

Ask Jo, Sally, Gareth or Jason for more information. Tech Tips WARNING LIGHT MEANINGS/ TROUBLE CODES Unfortunately, you can drive your brand-new Harley from the Dealer and not get five miles down the road before a warning light comes on. Or, you could be a thousand miles from home when they start flashing. What do they mean? What do you do? Here are a couple of helpful hints Whenever a warning light starts to flash, I begin to freak out. I know there is probably a simple reason for the warning flash. True, warning lights indicate a problem. But it probably is not that difficult to diagnose, though they can be tricky to track down and fix. So let's talk a little about the warning lights that will sometimes cause you alarm as well. Check Engine Light When the check engine light comes on, it indicates that something is happening or, in some cases, not happening. The easiest way to handle this is to do a "code check." The code will indicate what problem you're facing.

22

Low Battery Light Usually, when the voltage on your bike is low for more than five minutes, your warning light will come on. Red Security Light on Speedometer The red security light coming on means there is an issue somewhere. But, it might not necessarily mean a problem with your security system, especially if you don't have one. Red Key Light The red key warning light will often come on if you have unplugged your battery to install something. Error Codes on 2004-07 Harley Davidson Motorcycles These will also work on the 07 & 08 bikes. There are additional Harley error codes for the 08 bikes not listed here but are listed in this same section in another post. These apply to 04 and later bikes with the serial bus. The IM (instrument module) is capable of displaying DTC’s (diagnostic trouble codes). Speedometer Self Diagnostics: The speedometer is capable of displaying and clearing speedometer, tachometer, TSM/TSSM/ HSFM and ICM/ECM Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC). Turn Ignition switch to OFF & Run/Stop switch is to Run. Push odometer reset button in & hold. Turn ignition switch to Ignition, background lighting should illuminate, speedometer needle should sweep its full range and indicator lamps (battery, security, low fuel, check engine and cruise) should illuminate. The word “diag” should then appear, 23

release odometer reset button. Push the odometer reset button once and you will see the selection menu “PSSPt” with the first P flashing. Each letter represents an area of the diagnostics module. The module that is flashing is the one you are going to check. To move from one letter (module) to the next, you push the odometer reset button one time. (from P to S to SP to t and back to P, etc.) P = ECM/ICM (Electronic Control Module [EFI] / Ignition Control Module [Carburetted) S = TSM/TSSM (Turn Signal/ Turn Signal Security Module) SP = speedometer T = tachometer To get the DTC within an area of diagnostics, push and hold the odometer reset button in for 5 seconds and release. If there are any DTCs the code will be displayed or the word “none” will appear if there are no DTCs. Push the odometer reset button again to view additional codes if they exist. Record the codes. If DTCs are not to be cleared, Press and release the odometer reset button. Part number of module will be displayed. NOTE: To determine if a code is current or historic, clear the displayed code by pushing in and holding the odometer reset button (longer than 5 seconds) until ‘clear’ comes up, then press and release the odometer reset button. Turn OFF the ignition switch. Run your bike and shut it down then recheck the DTCs again by repeating steps 1 to 9. If the code is current it will reappear. Press and release the odometer reset button to continue to the next module. Turn Ignition switch to OFF. If have any issues, please call the Service Department
