September 2019

Ed Quarters The days are getting shorter now and weather is turning to be not so warm any more! We are around the corner from winter and as such I can see that there is less of an excitement amongst the bikers as I have not had many articles/photos etc from the members, or is it that everyone is very busy riding and recovering from various rallies throughout the country! There is the Austrian Rally this week in Fakersee and I hear that some of our club members are representing Thames valley!

Last issue I had proposed people advertising themselves in the magazine for a small fee and I am waiting for a response from many either as for their advert, so please do support the club as your contribution will go into the club kitty. This month we have all the news of new launches of HD from David and I am sure some of you are waiting to hear about these and planning to order new models! I am still going to stick to my 2017 Streeglide for now! Maybe when the electric Livewire has established itself, I will consider getting a new one! The charity skydive by Haley & Patricia finally happened last month after being postponed twice! They must be crazy jumping from such a height – I can never do that as I have a Acrophobia & get dizzy looking down . I am sure most of us would be making the most of the autumn rides through various country roads lined with beautiful colours of the autumn which will give you plenty of moments to take great : s to ion rg.uk pictures for the magazine; please do and send me and not s s i o bm og. .uk r su alleyh gmag wait until the deadline! u o v o y nd ames w.tvh Se h w @t a t w tor ed i pl oa d u Or

Softail Scriblings Hi All, It’s been a busy time since August club night, the very next day eight of the chapter met up at Oxford services for a ride up to Aviemore for Thunder in the Glens. The first day was mainly about motorway miles to get to Carlisle for the overnight stop. I decided at fuel stop that I didn’t need waterproofs on – bad decision! The rain could have been worse, but it still combined with strong sidewinds between Scotch Corner and Penrith to earn me a fair amount of grief from the micky taking shower in the hotel bar that night. The second day was a lot more pleasant, both dry and weather and some lovely roads – cracking day’s riding along some fantastic B roads. We stopped for lunch about an hour and a half from Aviemore to be met by Mike C who’d ridden out to meet us – what a decent chap. We were lucky with the weather the whole weekend, the rain even held off during Saturday’s two and half hour parade ride out (just). Thunder is a great rally and the whole town buys in to it and supports the event – lots of live bands and event up down the main street. If you’ve never been you must add it to your to-do list. Six of us booked one of the on site chalets and I was very pleasantly surprised by the space and comfort – very posh plus you could park the bikes right outside as a bonus. We hosted a get together at the chalet on the Saturday evening which was a great success and gave all of the chapter members present a chance to catch up and have a drink and a chat – I think we caught up with most of those there over the weekend. We rode back Monday and Tuesday, breaking the trip near 4

Newcastle on the Monday night and it was a similar split with the ride from Aviemore to Newcastle taking in some great roads and scenery and Tuesday being more about hitting the motorway to get miles done. We did stop off at Robin Hood HD though which was useful as I’d not been there before. The last Saturday in August saw a number of us help Jeanie spring a surprise on her neighbour in the form of a Harley wedding escort – the look on the bride’s face when she came around the corner and saw the bikes was priceless. As you will read elsewhere there is a plan to visit the Jersey rally next year and some members have already been booking for the One Day Run and Thunder in 2020 even thought this year isn’t yet done. We still have New Forest’s Blazin’ rally and RTTW to look forward to. On the subject of next year, it is almost time to start thing about committee nominations for next year as Nick mentioned last club night. If you think you’d like to get involved then please talk to one of us to find out more and get those forms in.

Cheers

August Summer Social The August summer social was a great success, with amazing mixtures of English, Indian and Asian. Plenty of all 3, I can see the Jolly Farmer at Hurst becoming a firm favourite - Linda Friend

Sky Dive Third time lucky for the sky dive of the year. Our girls Hayley West and Patricia Terry have finally done it. In front of friends and family they went up, and after climbing to 10,000 feet they came down. It was wonderful to watch and be a part of, the weather was good, and the company was great .. David's Dealer Diary Hello All I am excited to write my first piece for you and hope you find it interesting! Feel free to get in touch at David.kennedy@lind.co.uk if you have any comments or specific items you would like me to cover. Now in my second month at Reading, the big news revolves around the 2020 International Dealer show that has just happened in Milwaukee, and I was privileged to be in attendance. The launch of the new Low Rider S has been met with enthusiasm worldwide and having seen the bike in the flesh, know it’s a cracker. We have the last bike night coming up on the 26th September and have asked a ‘Wheelie Machine’ to come for you to try. Great fun, so I hope you can make it. Thursday 31st October is Harleyween. Creepy crawlies, and a fancy dress party atmosphere should break up a dark night – don’t miss that one. Intermediate Health Check. As our bikes sometimes take a while to go the 5000 miles required between servicing, I am offering a free intermediate 2500 mile check to qualifying bikes. This is open to any Harley owner and will incorporate an extensive multi-point check and of course, give you the flexibility to upgrade to an oil and filter change if you choose. Call the team to book yours in now! I look forward to seeing you on the road or catching up at one of the events we have coming up. Safe Riding David Dealer Principal

Here is a bit more ‘Harley-speak’ detail from the Show: With the release of its model year 2020 (MY20) products, Harley-Davidson offers new motorcycles to stir the soul and technology solutions that call to riders everywhere. This year, Harley-Davidson offers Reflex™ linked Antilock Braking System (ABS) and Brembo® brakes as standard features on all MY20 Touring model motorcycles. And brings the technology with Reflex™ Defensive Rider Systems and HD™ Connect service. As a new collection of cutting-edge technology, the Reflex™ Defensive Rider Systems, is designed to match motorcycle performance to available traction during acceleration, deceleration and braking. It’s standard on all LiveWire, CVO, Trike and Touring models, except the Electra Glide® Standard and Road King®. The new H-D™ Connect service, a standard feature on most MY20 Touring models and LiveWire, is a subscription-based connectivity linking Harley-Davidson riders with their motorcycle through their smartphone and the latest version of the Harley-Davidson® App. 13

LiveWire™ (ELW): Propelled by the immediate torque of the H-D Revelation™ all-electric powertrain, the LiveWire model is capable of rapid acceleration with just a twist of the throttle – no clutching or gear shifting required. An optimized center of gravity, rigid aluminum frame and premium adjustable suspension components give the LiveWire motorcycle dynamic handling. From 158 km (98miles) of combined range, performance is optimized for the urban street-rider. Available in Vivid Black, Orange Fuse, and Yellow Fuse, the LiveWire motorcycle will be available in select dealerships through Europe in the fall of 2019. Price varies by market. Low Rider® S (FXLRS): This new model offers aggressive performance with coastal style roots and HarleyDavidson heritage. Blacked out finishes and a raised handlebar behind a distinctive fairing appeals to riders who want to roll with plenty of attitude. The Low Rider S is available in Vivid Black for £15,825 and Barracuda Silver for £16,175. Road Glide® Limited (FLTRK): This new Road Glide Limited model 14

helps any rider float away to bliss with style, performance and premium luxury-touring features, including the Milwaukee-Eight® 114 powertrain, dual Daymaker® Reflector LED headlamps, and heated hand grips. This model also offers Electronic Reflex™ Linked Brembo® brakes with ABS. Available in a cool chrome or a bold blacked-out finish straight from the factory, the Road Glide Limited comes in a variety of colours and starting at £24,695. CVO™ Tri-Glide® (FLHTCUTGSE): The most-requested model in the history of Custom Vehicle Operations is here and overflowing with features like the Milwaukee-Eight 117 engine. Beyond the standard CVO features, including H-D Connect and trike-specific RDRS, this motorcycle allows the rider to see and feel all of the road. Available in two premium custom colours, Blizzard White Pearl with Lightning Silver and Storm Cloud or Black Stardust with Magnetic Grey and Wicked Red, the CVO Tri-Glide is £44,995. 15

CVO™ Limited (FLHTKSE) and Street Glide® (FLHXSE): The offer all the premium CVO standard features including the Milwaukee-Eight 117, Daymaker Adaptive LED headlamp, and the new H-D Connect and RDRS. The Limited is £35,595 and is available in three premium paint options: Moonlight and Deep Sea Blue, Smoky Gray & Stormcloud, and Sand Dune. The Street Glide is £33,095 and available in three premium paint options: Black Stardust Fade, Smoky Gray and Black Hole, and Sand Dune.

There is also some model range information that has come to us with these tweaks to the 2020 range:

CVO models no longer come with a toolkit – these are now a P&A option for those customers that wish to purchase.

Security sirens are no longer fitted to our motorcycles with the exception of CVO – the siren will be available as a P&A option for those customers wishing audible security. 16

All MY20 bikes come with two keys but just one key fob. Please remind all customers to set their PIN and remember it in case they lose their fob.

The heel gear shifter is now removed from all Touring and Trike models with the exception of CVO.

Luggage liners are no longer standard on Touring and trike models, they remain standard on CVO models.

CVO models now only come with one wireless headset, the single headset is now the upgraded Boom Audio 30K headset, replacing the previous 20S model.

On Road Glide models, the fairing side duct doors (and the buttons that operate them) are deleted. This will reduce head buffeting and provide smooth airflow

Transmission top cover – currently metal and chrome or black – will be replaced with a composite material with a flat black finish
