Magazine of the Thames Valley HOG Chapter

Welcome to January and your first issue of TFTRB for 2013 Well here we are again! No sooner does Christmas arrive, but it‟s all over in a flash and we‟re back to the everyday humdrum of life. At least it won‟t be that much longer before the lighter evenings start to appear again. Let‟s hope that the wettest year in England on record is well and truly behind us and 2013 brings us lots of sunshine!

The observant among you may have noticed a few changes in the look of the magazine. I haven‟t gone for any radical re-design this year, but instead, just a few updates to freshen things up. Hope you approve. If not, well tough! Haha. But of course your suggestions and contributions are always welcome and needed, so don‟t be shy, please feel free to come talk to me on club nights, rideouts or you can drop me an email to editor@thamesvalleyhog.or.uk What‟s also new is that my husband has managed to keep his current Harley for more than a couple of months! Guess he must like this one, but then we all know what happens when he says that! As much as I liked what he did with his first Sportster, I think this is my favourite of all his bikes so far. And the good thing is, it came with most of the work already done, so it‟s been cheaper too! But he‟s happy with it and that‟s the main thing.

Last year, despite the lack of good riding weather, the Chapter as a whole managed to clock up a fantastic total in the HOG mileage program. It helped that quite a number of members had some lengthy riding holidays in which all their miles counted. Spence & I are currently planning our summer holiday trip to the Alps, which hopefully will be a useful contribution to the chapter total for 2013, and I know there are a few other riding holidays planned amongst members. So far, there‟s a good number of people signed up for the Thunder in the Glens rally on the August Bank Holiday weekend. That will be a good opportunity to clock up some mileage and hopefully a great long weekend away. Don‟t forget, every mile counts so remember to sign up when the forms are available in the coming couple of months.

Features January‟s magazine was always going to be a challenge to fill with worthwhile stuff. But with the help of Bulldog, we‟ve compiled a decent spread of pictures from last year‟s events and activities. We‟ve added a few captions too for a bit of amusement, so hopefully you‟ll enjoy revisiting some of last year‟s fun and adventures we had as a Chapter. Even with terrible weather for the most part, we managed an awful lot in one season and it was a challenge in itself choosing and fitting in so many photos. As Don mentioned in his Director‟s words this month, a few of us attended a rideout for a very poorly young man just before Christmas. There‟s a small piece about the day in the last few pages. Big thanks to everyone that came - it really helped make it a special occasion for Charlie. Even though it‟s January, we‟ve already had one little trip out. Shaw dealership had a Birthday Showcase down in Eastbourne, which a few members made the trip to. You can read a bit about it all in the pages 11-13. Your club needs you! Don has also mentioned this, but I thought I‟d stick my beak in too, just cos I can! We still have two positions that are still open on the Committee. Whilst Fred has agreed to continue to run the memberships for the time being, he is taking more of a back seat with committee commitments pending someone else taking over. This isn‟t a permanent solution, so the club really does need someone to come forward. We also need an activities officer to help Barry out. Nick West is moving over to other duties so we need someone to step in and take over with the activities area. I know a lot of people don‟t want the responsibility and maybe some just don‟t have the time, but please remember, this chapter wouldn‟t happen without those that step forward and take on these roles.

You all benefit from the work everyone does, so please just don‟t assume it will still happen regardless, or just leave it to someone else. If you can spare some time to help out, even as a shared or assisting role, then please come forward. Nick and Fred can tell you what‟s involved with each position and help you get started. Or speak to Don if you need any further info. Birthdays There were a few Birthdays in January including Sue Dodds, Fred Cotsford, Shaun Forrester, Shirley Churchill and Ron Jackson. We hope you all enjoyed your day. Many Happy Returns to Nick Lees who has a Birthday today (Feb club night) - hope it‟s been a great day for you. There are a few more coming up in March, but do get in touch with me by email, Facebook or at club nights if you have a special occasion or a Birthday you would like mentioned in the magazine. In the meantime, if you‟re out and about on two wheels (or even four), stay safe and have fun. Don’t grow up, get bigger toys!

Sadie

I‟m always on the look out for more material for the magazine. If you have something, maybe a funny picture, a story, a joke or something else that might be Harley/bike related then please get in touch. I can be emailed at editor@thamesvalleyhog.org.uk As I‟ve always said, you don‟t need to be good at writing, typing or even using computers. Just come and talk to me and we‟ll go from there. I can do most of the work if you have something you can contribute, however much or however little. I look forward to the emails and messages flooding in!

Welcome to the January 2013 edition of Tales from the Riverbank. Happy New Year to you all. I hope everybody had a great Christmas and a great New Yearâ€&#x;s Eve celebration! Hazel and I arrived home at nearly 3am from a New Yearâ€&#x;s Eve party; I did expect a bad head but seemed to have got away with it again! Decembers Christmas club night had a very festive atmosphere about the evening with nibbles, prizes for the winners of the Chapter Mileage Challenge and two raffles. Elaine Shepherd with 7000 miles and Malcolm Bradly with 15469 miles were our two winners for 2012, both received a bottle of wine and a gift voucher for Oxford Harley Davidson, well done to Elaine & Malcolm.

The main Raffle prizes this year had been wrapped in Christmas paper which meant none of our winners had any clue what they had won. The second raffle was a large single prize with one winner which went to Hayley West, congratulations Hayley. I hope you enjoyed your Christmas parcel from Santa Ride for Charlie The Saturday ride for a very poorly young man called Charlie from Bracknell was a great success despite the terrible weather. Around 50 bikes of all makes and sizes from many different clubs around the area met at the Prince of Wales Pub in Bracknell.

Charlie was taken on a ride around Bracknell and Warfield before returning back to the Prince of Wales Pub near his home. The grin on that young manâ€&#x;s face as the ride returned to the pub with everybody in the car park waiting for him was a picture, Fantastic!! Many thanks to the members of Thames Valley who gave up their time to make a dream come true for a very special young man.

2013 Committee We are still looking for two new committee members for 2013, one to become our Membership Officer and the second is an Activities Officer. For our club to carry on as we have been for the last 15 years, we need our members to volunteer to help with the running of our great club. For more information about these positions and what is involved please speak to Nick West, Fred Cotsford or myself.

The coming year As Thames Valley UK Chapter heads towards its 15th Birthday in June 2013 and we start our third year without a dealership, our club is as strong as ever with a chapter full of very active members who enjoy the Harley Davidson & HOG life style. This year will be a busy one in our calendar with Harley Davidson, HOG, SOFER, and many other Chapters all celebrating anniversaries. The Activities Team are already in top gear planning a birthday party, ride outs and rallies for 2013 to make this year a memorable celebration. Any contribution of ideas for rides or events that you would like to visit or attend during 2013 send them over to the activities guys. During my time as Director over the past three years I have been very lucky to have a team of hard working and dedicated people around me on the committee, so moving on into 2013 I would like to keep the committee together for a further term of office, and with your vote stay on as Director for another year. I would like to thank the members and committee for their support over the last year and their hard work keeping Thames Valley alive and thriving. Ride safe and have fun in 2013!

Don Wibberley Director

I can’t believe 2012 came and went by so quickly. It was a poor year weather wise for biking, but looking at the galleries, we must have made the best of it with 44 occasions represented in photographs. I wonder if we can beat that in 2013? Encouraging new riders I mentioned a few months ago about encouraging more ladies to ride. Well, if you, or someone you know is thinking of gaining their licence as one of their New Year resolutions, then there’s a few You Tube clips that can help start the ball rolling www.youtube.com/ watch?v=Kf8qoQ5d3rA

Mileage program Well done to Elaine who was the lady who rode the most miles during 2012. Ten girls submitted their mileage totals as part of the chapter challenge, amounting to an average of 3,666 miles each and a grand total of 36,662 miles. Well done girls! Four of us even beat the 4,500 miles our Director rode. Shame we can’t count the pillion miles that the ladies put in too! Saturday Socials January’s Saturday Social was well supported with 24 people and 2 bikes. The next Saturday Social is arranged for 12.30pm on 9th February at The Shire Horse, Bath Road, SL6 3QA.

Once again it’s a Chef & Brewer pub and if you haven’t done so already, you can sign up by email and receive 20% off your food www.chefandbrewer.com/pub/shirehorse-littlewick-green-maidenhead/ c2852/

Tell us your best captions for this picture and we‟ll print the best one‟s in the next issue

Sadly I couldn’t make the Eastbourne trip the following day, but I understand good fun was had by all. It just goes to show that, even in the winter months, Thames Valley is a Chapter that keeps going from strength to strength. Evening get-together The date for the evening social at the Asian Fusion restaurant in Littlewick Green has been changed to Saturday 23 February at 7pm. Please let me know if you would like to come as I need to prebook tables. They have a mixture of Chinese, Indian and Thai cuisine http:// asianfusion.org/menu-food.php Everyone is welcome. Bye for now.

Advance bookings are £35 per person, which includes t-shirt, pin and camping. Gate prices are £40. There is other accommodation at the MacDonald‟s Aviemore Highland Resort at various rates for a 3 night stay. All the details can be found on www.dunedinhog.com. The plan for the chapter is to ride up on Thursday and stay overnight at Lockerbie, then ride to Aviemore on the Friday for 3 nights at the rally.

Two stops are planned for the return journey, arriving home on the Tuesday. Don W is currently looking at accommodation for the travel stops. More details announced in due course.

Supporting SportsAble Once again, for 2013, we have elected to continue with our support of SportsAble as our chosen charity. We have a good relationship with everyone involved and we already provide support through use of their club facilities each month. This year we hope to plan a number of other activities to help raise funds for the charity, so if you have any ideas then please let Activities, Pat or Don know.

End of April/beginning of May is our time of year when your chapter memberships come round for renewal. You must also be a current member of HOG to be a chapter member (or at least one person per joint/family subscription). There haven‟t been any increases in subscription fees for at least 4 years and 2013 prices will remain the same once more. However, whilst no one wishes to see the fees increase, there may come a time when financially the chapter can‟t sustain the current prices. The committee are working hard on finding other ways in which to raise revenue needed to meet all the chapter‟s financial commitments each year.

Unfortunately, it may follow that a small rise will be implemented next year (2014), but no decision has been made on this yet. Note - there will be one small change in May 2013 to club night attendance fees for non-members: Non-HOG (and thus non-chapter) members - £5 on the door (currently £2.50). HOG members (but not chapter members) - £2.50 on the door We feel this is fairer to all those that pay their subs each year to be a part of the chapter. A copy of the chapter‟s financial statement for 2012 is available from Don.

Thanks to everyone that took part and many congratulations to our two winners, Malcolm and Elaine. Don’t forget to sign up again for 2013. The challenge starts in March! On Sunday 13 January, Shaw HarleyDavidson dealership, based in Lewes, East Sussex, celebrated their 10th Anniversary. They held a showcase at the Winter Gardens in Eastbourne, where they had an array of bikes, both used, new and custom for all to enjoy.

The same time last year, the club enjoyed a ride down to Lakeside dealership, where the weather was unusually mild and dry enough for many to take their bikes. It was not the case in 2013, where bitter temperatures, the threat of snow, plus salt covered roads forced all but one onto four wheels. Credit to Doughnut for donning the thermals and getting the Fatboy out to brave the cold for the long round trip to the south coast. Although there was no official chapter „rideoutâ€&#x; for this event, those that went had the option to all meet up at the new Cobham services on the M25, and travel down together.

Some made their own way while others chose to gather and travel in convoy - more than a dozen or so in total making the trip. Eastbourne is a relatively easy route. Sat nav will usually take you via M25, M23, A23 and A27 - a journey of about 80 miles each way. You just have to make sure you don‟t get caught out by the police speed traps on the A23! Being out of season, the coastal town was quiet, so parking was pretty easy along the sea front in the morning. The Showcase itself seemed quite busy around mid-morning but really started to gather pace around lunchtime. For just £1 for adults to get in, it was good value, especially with the (very slim!) chance of winning a Sportster 48 thrown into the entry price. The lucky winner, if there was ever to be one, had to guess the random 6-digit code for the safe in the main hall. If the safe opened, you won the Sportster. What‟s the betting no one won given the odds? Aside from that, there were plenty of new and used bikes to try out for size, plus some special award winning custom bikes that often make an appearance at shows throughout the season.

The main hall had other trade stalls and attractions, plus Shaw t-shirts and other Harley merchandise. The side hall housed a quite spectacular collection of the SSC custom build bikes, ranging from unusual V-rods, to stunning Softails, Springers, Sportsters and XR1200‟s, to name but a few. Outside the building, Dr Kekill & Mr Hyde exhausts brought an interesting demo of one of their products - their electronic adjustable system to completely change the tone and volume of your Harley exhausts. In the quiet mode, they sound little more than the factory stock pipes, but flick a switch and they become the sound of thunder, with a deep low base tone - giving about 15% more horse power and up to 130dB of sound. The end cans aren‟t much to look at, but very loud and very clever all the same. The showcase as a whole would easily occupy an hour to hour-and-a-half to take everything in and have a good look around. There was a cafeteria serving lunch, snacks and drinks, or there was a large cafe just across the road. No doubt a few other places to eat and drink in Eastbourne were open to those that took more of a look around the town. The sun came out, making for a brisk but pleasant stroll along the sea front. Definitely not beach or sea weather though! All-in-all, it wasn‟t the biggest of events on the Harley calendar, but definitely a worthwhile trip on an otherwise cold and dull Sunday in January.

Ride for Charlie Crick, Saturday 22 December 2012 Following the Reading Toy Run, a plea was posted on its Facebook page by Sean Harris from West Berks MAG, asking for help to make a young terminally ill boy‟s dream come true.... “CALL TO ARMS: A gentleman visited Reading MAG last night on behalf of a 14 year old boy who has been diagnosed as terminally ill. The young man has created a "bucket list" of things he would like to do before he dies. Our visitor last night is arranging a fund raiser at the Prince of Wales in Bracknell on the 22nd of December to raise money to send the young man on some of the trips on his bucket list.

However, one of the items on the list is that he would like to ride on the back of a Harley in a pack of bikes. I said we could arrange this. I have managed to arrange a Harley (on condition of no snow and temperatures around or above zero) a choice however would really make his day! We need others (as many as possible) to provide a pack for a short ride. Plan is to meet at the Prince of Wales at 1pm for a ride out shortly after.”

The young man‟s name is Charlie Crick, aged 14, from Bracknell. He suffers from a terminal heart condition, curvature of the spine and arthritis. In his short life so far, he has had to endure almost 60 operations. Charlie is a friend of Sebastian‟s Action Trust - a charity which provides support for families and children with life-limiting illnesses and he has battled through his own conditions to help raise valuable funds for the cause. In 2012 he was names Child of Courage at the Pride of Bracknell Awards. After seeing the plea for help on the internet, there were hundreds of pledges of support from the biking community to come out and aid Charlie in making one of his dreams a reality. No one knew what the weather would be like on the day, it was purely hope, good faith and the will to help that ensured the ride would definitely take place as planned. The plea was posted on the Thames Valley Chapter forum and Facebook page, plus a notice in the club magazine and a mention at club night and we had a great response. Despite the weather on the day, 13 of our members made the trip to Bracknell to ride with Charlie and also to help with the marshalling of the route. Pat & Barry had planned to come along too, but apparently they spent half the morning stuck on the A34 in Barry‟s Christmas present!

Sadly the weather was pretty miserable on the morning leading up to the 1pm ride. Heavy rain undoubtedly put off a large number of bikers that had previously pledged to come along. But despite that, approximately 50 bikes, both Harley and non-Harley from Thames Valley Chapter, Hogs Back Chapter, West Berks MAG and Thames Vale Vultures, all turned up to make Charlie‟s dream a reality. Before the ride, the Mayor came along and Charlie had his picture taken with her on Gopher‟s bike for the local papers. He was loaned a leather waistcoat to make him look the part and chose his bike for the short route.

As bikes assembled and bikers drank coffee, it seemed someone was smiling down on young Charlie that day. The rain cleared and stayed away in perfect time for the ride. After a short briefing from organiser, Sean Harris, it was time for the off. The Marshals led the way, with Charlie next, closely followed by the pack. The route was kept to a fairly short loop on the outskirts of Bracknell, both to avoid too much traffic and not to put excessive pressure on Charlie‟s spine. Despite the wet and muddy roads, the ride went without hitch, except from one rather twitchy horse that took serious offense to a very loud and rather large group of motorbikes upsetting its quiet morning hack!

Once safely back at the Prince of Wales, it was time for a bit of socialising with more coffee or something from the bar, plus further photographs of the event. As some made their individual ways home, the fundraising continued for the rest of the day at the pub, all proceeds going towards Charlie‟s “bucket list”. After the event, there were many comments on how enjoyable the ride and the day as a whole had been. Even though bikes were filthy, there were no complaints - after all, what‟s a little rain and dirt in comparison to what young Charlie has had to endure in his short life? And probably everyone will agree, it was the huge grin lighting up his face after the ride, plus the chance to make a difference to a young lad‟s life that made it all worthwhile.
