One of my favourite things about working with the bunch of women that make up Team Grazia, is that regardless of how off-the-wall crazy an idea may sound, someone will always casually say, “Oh, I have a friend who does that,” or “Yeah, I knew a woman who tried that.” We really shouldn’t be surprised anymore, but I am always so in awe of how open-minded our Grazia family is – and how pro-girl power every single team member is. So when the idea of “sugar dating” got thrown around in a meeting, it wasn’t long before utterings of, “Oh, yeah, I went to varsity with a girl who did that,” and “I have some friends who tried it,” came floating to the surface. Regardless of what your thoughts are on the whole sugar-dating idea (some believe it objectifies women, while others claim it takes a strong woman to value her sexuality), I’m pretty sure you’ll find our story on pg 34 fascinating. Until next week!

TAYLOR SWIFT THREW THE BEST FOURTH OF JULY PARTY EVER
Prince George stole the show at his sister’s christening
Technically it was supposed to be his little sister, Princess Charlotte Diana’s big day. But all eyes were on the adorable Prince George, who stood out from his pastel-clad Royal family by sporting a pair of fire engine red Rachel Riley shorts and a white shirt (a combo chosen to resemble the outfit his dad, Prince William, wore when he went to visit Prince Harry in hospital in 1984). George melted hearts all over the world when he gave the crowds gathered outside St Mary Magdalene Church a sweet little wave and reached up on his tip toes to peek at Charlotte in her vintage Millsons pram.

Two people were killed and at least 15 injured in collisions that occurred in heavy mist along the N12 and the N4 highway near Ogies and Witbank in Mpumalanga. Roughly 74 vehicles – including cars, minibus taxis and several trucks – were involved in different collisions along the stretch of road over a single day. “It is believed mist in the area contributed to the cause of the collisions,” said Russel Meiring, ER24 spokesman.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie Before they were married, Ange let slip that: “He can make me so mad I want to rip his shirt and scratch him.” Sean Penn and Robin Wright When asked about his ex-wife, Sean said that “No previous marriage counts.”
Perez Hilton and Lady Gaga When she dissed his bullying ways, the gossip blogger claimed he had “made her famous”. Um… Gwyneth Paltrow and Kate Moss When Kate saw the actress running on the beach and questioned her motive, Gwyn said, “So I don’t look like you when I’m old.”
Sam Wilson-Späth suggests avoiding saying those, erm, deeply regrettable things while still getting your rage on MY HUSBAND AND I have an interesting, but by no means unusual, fighting style. He is passive aggressive. I am aggressive aggressive. Which means, during fights, I spend a lot of time fighting with myself, coming up with what I believe to be extremely plausible reasons for being pissed off… and then reiterating them in the face of my husband’s unyielding silence. Sound familiar? The big danger here is that while you continue to push your point, you tend to become meaner and meaner trying to provoke a reaction. This is, of course, a sure-fire way to reach that low point, or what I like to call the sleep-in-the-spareroom comment. A bad idea, but oh so difficult to avoid. But all is not lost! I just read a wildly important column online that introduces a fantastic new game specifically geared to stopping women around the world from delivering the Comment Of No Return. The game is called: “Things I wish I could yell at my significant other”. This is how it works. Open a Word document. And then rage-type all the things you wish you could yell at your partner when they are at their most eye-wateringly annoying. Let me give you some thoughts on how you might begin.
“It’s called a washing basket, you Neanderthal. You do not throw things at it. Baskets by their very definition are things that hold other things. Could you be any lazier without growing moss?” “No. Surprisingly, I don’t feel like having sex with you when you come home and wake me up at 3am smelling like a brewery and bashing around like a drunken bear. Honestly? You are so unattractive right now, I might not want to sleep with you again. Ever. Like, in my life.” “The way you can spend eight hours in a row watching Top Gear makes me seriously question having children with you. Because this must mean that you are so stupid, not drooling is a real problem for you.” “Forget my birthday one more time, you mother!@#$, and I’m putting all your stuff in a black bin bag on the side of the road.” See how fun this is? You’re just itching to start typing, aren’t you? Top tip: you might not want to save these documents. This exercise is about venting, not stewing. If this game doesn’t work for you, you can, of course, resort to the old tried-and-tested method: your best friends, a crate of wine and a good oldfashioned gossip fest. ■

“HAPPY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my handsome, hilarious, sweet soulmate.” These were the words Kourtney Kardashian posted on Instagram when Scott Disick celebrated his 32nd birthday at the end of May. However, three weeks later, she was noticeably silent when it came to wishing the dad of her three kids a happy Father’s Day. Since then, the pair – who haven’t been seen together since mid-June – have been hinting via social media that their decade-long relationship may well be over. Yet if we ever needed proof that “Skourt” was heading for Splitsville, it was the pictures of Scott being brazenly touchy-feely with gorgeous fashion stylist Chloé Bartoli – who also happens to be his ex… NO SHAME

had with a college student), Scott has always been careful not to be seen getting too close to other women. So when Lord Disick was pictured playfully tugging on Chloé’s arm on a yacht in St Tropez, jaws dropped. Was he cheating on Kourtney? Was this some new plot line for Keeping Up With The Kardashians? Sadly, it seems this is the real thing. The pictures told the whole story: Scott and Chloé couldn’t keep their hands off each other, cuddling on beach chairs, all over each other at the lunch table, her feeding him from her plate, him caressing her golden sun-kissed skin... Lilian Glass, a human behaviour and body language expert, analysed the pictures and says the pair are definitely more than friends. “He’s rubbing her in so many different places. She’s very familiar with his physical space, and he’s very comfortable with her invading his space. I think they’re definitely having an affair.” A day after the cosy lunch scene, the pair reappeared on a yacht for another comfortable and familiar display, while Kourtney – across the world in Los Angeles – uploaded snaps of herself celebrating Independence Day weekend. An insider said Chloé and Scott kept in touch after they broke up over a decade ago. “They’ve always been close and Kourtney’s always been threatened by her.” Another insider dished that Kourtney kicked Scott out the house two weeks before he was snapped with Chloé, when he came home drunk and high on cocaine after being AWOL for four days. In the past, Scott usually headed to Kourt’s sister, Khloé’s pad to sober up, and would beg for forgiveness the next day – but this time he decided to call up a few mates and head first to St Tropez and then Monaco.
Apparently, Scott knew Chloé was celebrating her birthday in the South of France. “Scott’s done with Kourtney,” a friend said. “He feels Kourtney stole his youth by forcing him to be a father. He wants to live life on his own terms, where he won’t be constantly belittled by her.” Some pals claim Scott has so much resentment towards the mother of his three children – Mason, 5, Penelope, 2, and Reign, six months – that he wanted to be photographed getting up close and personal with Chloé. “He wants to humiliate her, like she’s humiliated him all these years,” one friend said. “He’s angry.” And Kourtney is devastated. “Seeing Scott with another woman broke her heart into a million pieces,” a source close to the family revealed. “She feels like a total fool.” HELL HATH NO FURY
Kourtney has already consulted lawyers about seeking sole custody of the kids, the insider added. “Kourtney feels she has no choice

Even though Kourtney wished Scott a birthday on social media (left), she was very silent on Father’s Day just a few weeks later. The reality star spent the Independence Day weekend with her children in LA (below, with Penelope), while Scott was in France. She even started the weekend off by posting a pic on Instagram with an ambiguous caption saying, “Don’t mess”

partying than he does his family.” Considering Kourt’s family helped him reach star status, we wouldn’t be surprised if he came crawling back with his tail between his legs. But things are different this time: the Kardashians have all had enough. but to fight for full custody, because Scott refuses to act like a real dad. “Kourtney told Scott her lawyers will destroy him if he tries to touch her $44 million (around R450 million) fortune. She’s confident she’ll be able to convince a judge Scott is an unfit parent. He overdosed and got his stomach pumped on national television, so Kourtney has more than enough evidence to prove he cares more about
FAMILY TIES
“Kourtney isn’t the only one who’s been betrayed,” a family friend explained. “By running off with Chloé, Scott has put the entire Kardashian brand at risk.” Khloé is said to be the most upset. “She loved Scott as a brother, but Kourtney is blood. She’s helping her get through this and is encouraging her not to forgive Scott. What he’s done is unforgivable.” ■
Chloé and Scott got together in 2005 – a year before he started dating Kourtney. They called it quits when work commitments got in the way.
She and her twin sister, Marie-Lou Bartoli, run a business as stylists to the stars and count the likes of Chrissy Teigen, Selena Gomez, Ashley Tisdale, Miranda Kerr, Nicole Richie and Poppy Delevingne as clients.
The French-speaking sisters live together in a bungalow in LA. Chloé has been linked to Jared Leto in the past, and the pair are still good friends. 17

KHLOÉ’S NEW HIPSTER MAN still be legally married to estranged hubby Lamar Odom, but the sassiest of the reality sisters seems to have bagged herself a new man – and she’s happy for everyone to know it! The 30-year-old reportedly spent the weekend getting cosy with basketball player James Harden at the Encore Beach Club in Vegas. “She just looked so happy to be with him,” said an insider. “She was drinking bubbly and dancing with him. She didn’t hide in the VIP section either – she was thrilled for everyone to see.”
KHLOÉ KARDASHIAN MAY

The following day, the pair entered Khloé’s gym within minutes of each other, and left through the back door. They reportedly also headed to a friend’s place for a braai together later that same day. This latest romance comes weeks after Khloé let her divorce papers to Lamar lapse, leading the judge to throw the divorce application out of court. It also comes hot on the heels of her on-again/off-again relationship with rapper French Montana. “French was just a rebound for her,” said an insider. “It dragged on longer than it should have, but she was just
so lonely. But she’s having a great time with James.” At 25 years old, Khloé’s new squeeze is five years her junior, though sources close to the star say that the Houston Rockets player makes up for the age difference in maturity. “He’s just a real gentleman. He calls when he says he will, and he sends her texts to say he’s thinking of her. Who knows if it’ll work out, but right now, he’s very good for her,” said the source. And with that totally hipster beard James is sporting, we offer Khloé our full support! ■

IF YOU ASK US, the idea of buying prime Manhattan real estate within throwing distance of your new not-sosecret boyfriend’s notoriously Type-A ex-wife is very definitely a bad idea. But according to insiders, the reason Jennifer Lawrence, 24, has been spotted stomping around Tribeca with a fierce look of determination (and an enviable Elizabeth & James clutch slung over her shoulder) is that she’s on the hunt to buy her first NYC apartment – and she’s being very specific about where exactly it should be… and how many bedrooms it should have. “The [real estate] agents tried to pitch great buildings in several different neighbourhoods, but Jennifer refused to look at those properties. Instead, she gave them an address and told

What? Four?! According to insiders, J-Law and Chris Martin, who have been unofficially on-and-off for almost a year now, will be moving in together – and Chris’ kids, Apple, 11, and Moses, nine – will be sleeping over on occasion too. Even though there were rumours that Jen had called it quits with the 38-yearold Coldplay singer last week – after he was spotted skipping down the street in London with his good pal Kylie Minogue at 2.30am – Jen and Chris were spotted walking through Central Park over the 4th of July holiday weekend, which quickly put rumours of their break-up to rest. One eyewitness revealed: “They were walking arm-in-arm, in a hurry, it
seemed. It looked like they were dressed for date night.” And on the moving-in plans, the insider claimed, “Gwyneth [Paltrow] demanded that Chris live close to her – and he convinced Jen that it was a good idea!” According to this insider, Jen has been so adamant about buying a place no more than 500 metres away from Gwyneth’s River Lofts apartment on West Street because Chris has apparently convinced her it will be best for all involved – and, most importantly, he’s rumoured to have assured a sceptical Jen that Gwyneth won’t be dropping in to visit unannounced. Yeah, right… Since Gwyneth was apparently dumped last month via SMS by her boyfriend – Glee producer Brad Fulchuk – for being “too demanding”, we wouldn’t count on Chris’ promises of independence if we were you, Jen. ■

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner (left) announced their separation a day after their tenth anniversary. One of California’s laws states that after ten years of marriage, the breadwinner must pay alimony – and as Ben earns more than Jen, it looked like he would be parting with his cash. But Wetzel & Sons removal vans (below) were seen in their driveway a week before their announcement, which means Ben could be getting out of the ten-year rule with more cash
e h t d n a r e f i n n Be ‘ten-year rule’ WHEN NEWS BROKE that Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck were divorcing, people in Jen’s camp nodded knowingly. Clever girl, they said. She’s making sure she hung in just long enough to get a fair wodge of his fortune. California law states that if a couple has been married for ten years or longer, the spouse with the most money must pay alimony for the rest of their lives. Ben is by far the wealthiest partner in this case – he has $75 million (about R930 million) in the bank, while poor Jen gets by with just $40 million (about R495 million) to her name. Add to this the fact Ben and Jen have no pre-nup in place, and it looked like she was in for a major payday. But it seems Ben may get out of this divorce unscathed… Even though their separation was made public a day after their ten-
year anniversary, removal vans were papped outside Bennifer’s home a week before, which means Ben has proof they separated before their landmark anniversary. So there should be no confusion in determining dates, when the time comes for their ample assets to be divided. The removal company Ben hired is no ordinary one: Wetzel & Sons are the go-to guys for the glitterati, because of their 30-year history of privacy and discretion. So when you spot one of their vans in the drive, you pretty much know there’s trouble in paradise. But there are hopes Bennifer will keep things friendly for the sake of kids Violet, 9, Seraphina, 6, and Samuel, 3. Ben is reportedly going to live in another dwelling on their sprawling LA property – which could get pretty awkward pretty fast if things turn ugly. ■
WETZEL & SONS HELPED THESE COUPLES MOVE TOO: ASHTON KUTCHER AND DEMI MOORE, 2011 W&S vans were in the Kutcher-Moore driveway two weeks after claims that Ashton had cheated on Demi surfaced. GEORGE CLOONEY AND STACEY KEIBLER, 2013 He called the company when Stacey vacated his home in Studio City, California. KATY PERRY AND RUSSELL BRAND, 2012,AND THEN JOHN MAYER, 2014 When her marriage imploded, Katy called W&S. She did the same just two years later, when things with John went south. 23

THE RISE OF D I U L F R E D N E G E TH G E N E R AT I O N THE PICTURES CAUSED
quite a stir: Miley Cyrus getting hot and heavy with Victoria’s Secret model Stella Maxwell during a break on the set of her latest music video. Some laughed it off as another publicity stunt by anything-goes Miley, as eyewitnesses said the pop star was aware the pictures (up on gossip site TMZ, along with a video) were being taken. This is Miley, critics said, she’ll do anything for attention and drama. Which may be true enough. But there’s more behind Miley’s make-out session than a feel and a fondle in a parking lot. The 22-year-old may be in-your-face and look-at-me – but

she’s also at the forefront of something that’s taking off in Hollywood: the gender-fluid movement. Miley spoke about what it meant to be gender-fluid in a recent interview. “I don’t relate to being boy or girl, and I don’t have to have my partner relate to being boy or girl,” she said. She came out about it to her mom, Trish, when she was 14, she added. “I remember telling her I admire women in a different way. And she asked me what I meant, and I said: ‘I love them. I love them like I love boys.’” She had this to say about her gender identity to gay and lesbian Out magazine: “I kind of wanted to be

nothing. I don’t relate to what people would say define a girl or a boy, and I think that’s what I had to understand: being a girl isn’t what I hate, it’s the box I get put into.” Miley and Stella, 24, have been almost inseparable since Miley split from Patrick Schwarzenegger in April. And as she flies the genderfluid flag loud and proud, members of the club are growing. There’s Cara Delevingne and her girlfriend, indie-pop sensation St. Vincent (aka Annie Clark). Kristen Stewart’s new love interest is her personal assistant, Alicia Cargile. Michelle Rodriguez is gender-fluid too, as is Orange Is The New Black star Ruby Rose. Taylor Schilling is rumoured to be going out with Carrie Brownstein, the star of Portlandia and a member of the all-girl rock group Sleater-Kinney. All this is making us wonder: is gender fluidity just a phase? Or is it helping to highlight the complexities of gender identity, being more than just male vs female? Ruby, 29, has been championing gender fluidity for a while and even released a short film on the subject. “Gender fluidity is not really like feeling you’re at one end of the spectrum or the other,” says the star, who’s engaged to Phoebe Dahl, granddaughter of children’s author Roald Dahl. “For the most part, I definitely don’t identify as any gender. I’m not a guy; I don’t really feel like a woman, but I was born one.” She’s “somewhere in the middle”, she says. “Which, in my perfect
imagination, is like having the best of both sexes. It’s about not having to succumb to whatever society – whether it’s work, family, friends or whoever – says you’re supposed to be because of how you were born.” Society still has a long way to go to accept people who don’t fit into pre-approved boxes, she says, which is why she welcomes the debate around gender fluidity. “People are talking about it more now because once someone opens a door to someone like that, people put their hands up and say, ‘That’s me! That’s my friend! That’s my sister! That’s my mom!’” Dr Tracy O’Keefe, a sexologist and psychotherapist, has reminded us that gender fluidity has always existed. “It was recognised in societies such as India, Pakistan and Native American cultures for centuries. But AngloSaxon Christian influences tried to wipe it out during colonisation.” This, she claims, was when we started putting people in those boxes Ruby and Miley speak about. But times are changing – and Miley, Ruby and company can take a bow for helping alter language and attitudes. Something that was once “weird” and even taboo is now entering mainstream culture and getting everybody talking, says Damien Riggs, a linguistics expert. “The language is getting more traction now, with celebrities saying it. More people are saying, ‘I’m gender-fluid or gender-diverse.’ People are being more assertive about the fact that these boxes don’t fit them.” You go… er, folks! ■ 25
CRISIS IN GREECE: What does it all mean?
7 Despite its long, proud history, Greece has sunk into a hole of debt so deep it’s on the verge of collapse. Images of frantic Greeks queueing at ATMs to withdraw their daily allowance – just 60 euros or about R800 a day – brought the crisis home to millions across the globe. And now the country has voted no to another bailout-withausterity-demands by the European Union… We try to answer some of the burning questions 26
HOW DID IT GET TO THIS?
WHAT HOPE IS THERE NOW?
It’s complicated, but basically the country managed to hide its debts for years, thanks to a deal organised by Wall Street finance giant Goldman Sachs. That all came unstuck when the global financial crisis hit in 2007.
Greek banks are running out of money – fast. The ECB could refuse to lend the country any more money, which will mean banks and the government don’t have the basic funds to operate. One option is for Greece to ditch the euro and bring back its own currency, the drachma, and recapitalise banks by printing money. But the drachma will be worth nowhere near as much as the euro. And the logistics, as you can imagine, would be nightmarish.
CAN GREECE PAY BACK ITS DEBT?
No. The debt is 178 percent greater than Greece’s gross domestic product (basically what the country actually makes). Austerity measures have caused its economy to shrink – and the debt to increase. There are only two options: either the European Central Bank (ECB) needs to write off the debt, or Greece needs to leave the EU. WHAT DOES THE NO VOTE MEAN?
A number of things: “No” makes Greece’s exit from the EU more likely but not definite. Everything now hinges on whether the EU leaders will re-enter talks with Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, whether a new deal can be struck and the terms under which the ECB will supply money to Greek banks – if at all.
WHAT IF YOU’VE BOOKED A HOLIDAY IN GREECE?
You can still go – but take plenty of cash with you. The 60 euro-a-day limit doesn’t apply to foreigners, but there’s a real danger of banks running out of money, which could lead to a pretty stressful vacay. Take small notes, travel agents advise – five-, 10- and 20-euro notes – as traders won’t have much cash for change. You can take your credit and debit cards, but there is a chance they’ll be rejected. ■

IN A WORD: WOW!
Clearly all those years of keeping up with the Kardashians have rubbed off on Caitlyn Jenner. Her new style is totally on fleek – and she looks drop-dead gorgeous. She lit up the streets of New York last week, first gracing the Voss Productions Pride party – her first public appearance since coming out as transgender – in a stylish belted white blouse and skirt. The next day, the 65-year-old was snapped in a gorgeous black wrap dress paired with gold and black sandals and a cute Elisabeth Weinstock snakeskin clutch. Later in the evening, Caitlyn was seen leaving a restaurant in a formfitting outfit featuring a Hérve Léger bandage skirt – the same design we’ve seen on Kylie Jenner and Kim and Khloé Kardashian.
Day three saw her unleashing her wild side: Cait was papped heading into Sex And The City designer Patricia Field’s boutique in Soho in an animal-print wrap dress by Diane von Fürstenberg. In true celebrity style, Caitlyn made a quick wardrobe change in the store. She stepped out in a rainbow-coloured sequinned mini skirt and cropped black jacket fashion critics are calling “her best look yet”. That evening Caitlyn channelled her inner K-Middy, turning heads in a blue lace Diane von Fürstenberg mini dress with a plunging neckline to see the popular An American In Paris on Broadway. After all this, we wait with bated breath for Cait to make her redcarpet debut at the ESPY Awards on July 15. Bring it on! ■

Celebs have been going gaga for teatox brand Bootea, despite the risk of falling pregnant – it flushes the contraceptive pill out of your system. Clockwise from far left: Bella Thorne, Pretty Little Liars’ Ashley Benson, Kylie Jenner, Ashley Tisdale and Vanessa Hudgens
IF YOU HAVEN’T
heard of the teatox trend, it’s basically a herbal drink that has laxative properties – and everyone, from Kylie Jenner and Ashley Tisdale to Vanessa Hudgens, is trying it. While the side effects of teatox brands differ, one option – known as Bootea (which retails for about R3 100 for a 14-day course) – is making headlines after users started falling pregnant despite being on the pill. The tea flushes out the digestive system, taking the pill along with it. Bootea’s packaging doesn’t come with any warnings, so users weren’t aware they were at risk of conceiving. Cue the “Bootea babies”.
10 The teatox pregnancy BOOM
Briton Naomi Salt, 26, was one of the first to fall pregnant after using the tea. She began teatoxing in December and is now six months along. “I am over the moon now, but I was shocked and worried at first, to say the least,” she said in a recent interview. “I am regimental about taking my pill, and my first reaction was, ‘How has this happened?’” After some research, Naomi came across the FAQs section on the Bootea website. It states: “Bootea can affect the accuracy of the pill if you take your pill in the morning within four hours of the laxative effect.” While on Bootea, pill users are advised to also use condoms. This advice would’ve been great if it had been on the box, Naomi said. “It’s totally irresponsible.”
Now Bootea users have taken to online platforms to warn other women that they could get a lot more than they bargained for. “At first it was great,” one user said. “I lost 4kg in two weeks! That great feeling didn’t last long. I’m now eight weeks pregnant with our third child.” Another added: “I’ve been on the pill for almost 14 years! Twenty-eight days of Bootea... Pregnant.” While Bootea seems to be the main culprit, other teas could have the same result. “All detox teas cause diarrhoea,” says Dr Sarah Hardman from the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare in London. “If you have diarrhoea within four hours of taking your pill, the effectiveness cannot be guaranteed.” Are you taking notes, Kylie? ■

T WITH… A QUICK CHA
She burst on to and has beco the scene me one of th e most popula r Victoria’s Se cre Angels. The 2 2-year-old ta t lks keeping in sh ape, her plan for a new career and Taylor Sw if t
Karlie Kloss YOU WERE DISCOVERED AS A MODEL AT A YOUNG AGE. WHAT KIND OF IMPACT DID THAT HAVE ON YOU AT FIRST?
I felt very awkward and isolated in my early teens. I felt like Bambi. It wasn’t much fun being seen as the lanky and gangly girl in school, and all the teasing and jokes that I had to put up with made me feel incredibly insecure. It was only once I started modelling that I began to develop a better image of myself and a sense of being accepted and liked. TELL US ABOUT WHEN YOU WERE DISCOVERED.
I was discovered in a shopping mall in St. Louis when I was 13. By the time I was 15, I was in New York doing the Calvin Klein collection, and then I went to Milan for Gucci. Later I did Alexander McQueen and Chloé, and after that I was kind of on my way, and I started thinking seriously about modelling as a career. Before that, I was thinking about following in my father’s footsteps and becoming a doctor. But I knew that I wanted to go to college and study and find a profession. Modelling was really just a dream, like so many young girls have. AND HOW IS IT TO BE LIVING THAT DREAM NOW?
Everything that’s happened since has exceeded my wildest dreams, far beyond anything I imagined. And even
though I didn’t pursue my studies as I had planned, I’ve learnt so much about life and the world over the past eight years. And now I’ve enrolled full-time, at New York University. HOW DO YOU MANAGE YOUR TIME WHILE YOU’RE WORKING SO MUCH AS A MODEL?
I’ve become very good at multitasking. I spend a lot of time flying, so I’ll be using that time to study. There’s also a lot of time waiting around at photo shoots and other jobs where I can always get in a half hour or an hour of studying. It’ll be hard, but it’s something I’m very serious about. Having a lot of things to do makes you more focused, and you learn to manage your time very efficiently. HOW DO YOU CHILL OUT?
Running is a great way for me to stay active and fit, and it also helps clear my mind if I’m under a lot of stress. I ran this year’s Paris Half Marathon – that was a huge accomplishment for me. I had never run more than 6km before, and I wanted to see if I could finish the race – and I did! [Laughs.] WHAT ABOUT DIET. DO YOU EVER FEEL STARVED?
No. I’m lucky in that I can eat pretty much anything, but I do follow very healthy eating habits. I don’t eat meat, only fish, eggs and vegetables, and I run and exercise regularly. If you can find
the time to do that, you don’t really have to worry about gaining weight, and you’ll feel a lot better and have more energy in general. ONE OF YOUR BEST FRIENDS IS TAYLOR SWIFT. WHY DO THINK YOU’VE BECOME SUCH CLOSE CONFIDANTES?
I think a large part of our friendship comes from having similar goals and ambitions in terms of our careers. We both believe in working very hard and setting goals for ourselves. But we’re also able to have fun together. We’ve gone on a few trips in the past few years, we speak and SMS a lot while we’re travelling, and we support each other the way good friends do. IS IT IMPORTANT FOR WOMEN TO MAINTAIN CLOSE FEMALE FRIENDSHIPS?
I grew up in a family where I was surrounded by strong women – my mom and my three sisters. It’s important for women to support each other. It’s nice to have someone there for you when you need to talk or just feel that you’re not alone. AND YOUR CLOSEST FRIEND?
My mom spent five years travelling with me to make sure I was comfortable and happy. She would sometimes bring my three sisters backstage, and we would have such a great time as a family. My mom has always been there to give me all her trust and support, and I’m so grateful to her. I would never be anywhere near as successful as I am now, if it hadn’t been for her. My father is also very happy for me. We speak on the phone every day, no matter where I am. ■ 33
Entrepreneur Brandon Wade launched his own online platform for sugar daddies and babies to connect
INSIDE THE WORLD OF SUGAR DATING 34
GRAZIA FEATURE
Pay-for-play relationships – where wealthy older people pay young people for time and affection – is fast becoming the norm. We take a look at sugar dating and being a sugar baby
WHO’S YOUR SUGAR DADDY? “People liken having a papa bear to prostitution – but it’s different.” These are the words of sugar baby Kiano Mohlala, a Wits medical student. “These men are paying for my time, and I don’t mind selling my time.” The 20-year-old was one of four students interviewed about the increasingly popular trend by the university magazine Wits Vuvuzela and was remarkably open about it. “Honestly, I love money. I know some probably do it to pay for school, but that’s not why I have a sugar daddy.” She does it for the treats – the highlight being an all-expenses paid trip to Namibia for her and her gal pals. To some, having an older man picking up the tab for everything from tuition to travel may sound dodgy. But the benefits are many. “There are a lot of us, and we get good grades – maybe because we don’t have to worry about money,” another Wits student is quoted as saying. “I don’t regret my choice to have a papa bear. There are certain things I need that they can give me.” Whichever way you look at it, the sugar daddy (and mommy) phenomenon is on the rise – and the internet and social media are making it easier than ever to find the ideal date. Looking to solve his own dating conundrum in 2006, US multimillionaire tech entrepreneur Brandon Wade launched – and signed up to – Seekingarrangement.com, an online dating platform that promises to unite wealthy older men and women with attractive millennials (aka sugar babies) for “mutually beneficial” relationships. In almost 10 years, Brandon (now 44) has seen the membership of the site explode: there are 4.5 million active users in 139 countries. South Africa has jumped onto the bandwagon too. According to Angela Jacob Bermudo, public relations manager at Seekingarrangement.com, there are 17 000 active users on the platform. Local equivalents such as

up may have changed, the gender imbalance between the wealthy older crowd and the young and hot remains the same. In the 21st century, sugar daddies still outnumber sugar mommies, while sugar babies are mostly women. THE ONLINE NETWORK Sugar babies across the globe are also using blogs and Tumblr to connect with one another, provide support and warn of the dangers of a daddy who might not be as sugary as he seems. “If 36
When it comes to SA’s stats on Seekingarrangement.com – a platform that connects rich men and women to younger people – there are 10 120 female sugar babies, 3 200 male sugar babies, 2 900 sugar daddies and 400 sugar mommies. The areas with the most members are first Joburg, then Soweto, Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban. SOME SUGAR DATING LINGO: • Pot = a potential sugar daddy/mommy. • Salt daddy = a manipulative, angry or abusive man. • Splenda (an artificial sweetener) daddy: a man who strives to be a sugar daddy but just doesn’t have the funds to pull it off. • Being in the bowl = women who are active in the sugar dating scene.
there’s a guy who is an absolute asshole, warnings will be put out about him,” says Sarah Marie, the 22-year-old creator of the blog Confessions Of A Sugar Baby (Confessions-of-a-sugarbaby.tumblr.com). Chelsea Ridenour, a 25-year-old sugar baby, has a sugar baby Tumblr profile too, and it was thanks to her online sugar network that she managed to escape a dodgy situation last year. “Not everyone is sweet. Sugar Daddy Steve was a hotelier. In his home he had random sugar baby profile pictures on display.
As I attempted to leave, he pushed my suitcase down the stairs and threw porcelain plates at my head. I turned to my growing Sugar Tumblr page for help. Within minutes, I had 100 responses. One follower even called a cab for me.” THE DANGERS The kind of girls most often attracted to sugar dating want to find a “father” figure who will help them, says Dr Gail Gross, a human behaviour, parenting and education expert. “A woman may be seeking this type of arrangement because of her need for power and control. She may have a problem with intimacy and needs a relationship that offers space.” More worrying are the types of men drawn into this world, she adds. “By controlling the purse strings, men step into a fantasy relationship not very different from prostitution. And by creating the illusion of love, men caught in the web of sugar daddy dating maintain control and protect themselves emotionally.” Sugar baby Tessla Coil says sugar dating is definitely a form of sex work. “Prostitute, escort, stripper, sugar baby – in the end, men are paying you for an emotional and physical experience. Differences in names have more to do with the person doing the labelling.” The idea that becoming a sugar baby makes you independent and in control can often be an illusion, unless you enter into the relationship with a concrete understanding of who you are and what you want, says Angel (surname withheld), creator of Blonde Angel Baby (Blondeangelbaby.tumblr.com). “Be aware of your situation, and don’t allow yourself to fall for the scam of having to sexually ‘audition’ for a pot [potential sugar daddy] before an allowance is in place,” she warns. “He does not need a test run or private time to see if you ‘click’.” Also, Gail is quick to caution that your sugar dating profile information will exist forever online. “If you are a young woman preparing to place your photo and profile on these sites, remember you are creating your history – who you are to be, you are becoming… A mutual manipulation, to satisfy separate and independent needs, negatively challenges the potential of mutuality and true happiness.” ■

Sugardaddybaby.co.za and Sugardaddydating.co.za are also helping to scratch this particular itch. “They say that money can’t buy happiness, but it sure can buy a lot of other stuff!” Sugardaddydating. co.za leads in on its website. “If you’re tired of living life on a pittance and not being able to make ends meet, isn’t it time you found someone to be your benefactor? Here you’ll find scads of wealthy men just waiting to share their lifestyle with someone like you.” All the potential sugar daddies listed on Sugardaddybaby.co.za claim they don’t make less than R1 million rand a year. And the average age clocks in at around 45 to 50. For sugar daddies and mommies, it seems “renting” a girlfriend or boyfriend can be less of a financial risk than investing in marriage, which, even with all the legal contracts in place, could cost them big time in a divorce. There are few things better than pouring yourself a large glass of wine after a long day at the office... But many of us have become so tied to our tipple it’s star ting to affect our health. We show you how to have your wine, and drink it too!
SOUTH AFRICAN WOMEN:
the new binge drinkers KAT* USUALLY STARTS FANTASISING
about cracking open a bottle of wine when she’s stuck in Joburg traffic on her way home from work. “I have at least two glasses of wine every night of the week,” the 29-year-old says. And at weekends things flip out of control, with nights out descending into debauchery. For Kat, a brand manager for an advertising firm, drinking daily has become the norm. It helps take the edge off a long day of meeting her boss’ demands, dealing with difficult clients and replying to endless emails. 38
“It’s not like I get wasted every night,” she says. “I usually drink to relax and put the day’s stress behind me. The weekends are a different story though. My friends and I often have up to eight drinks a night – if not more. I don’t see a problem with it – most people my age do it.” She’s right. South Africans have always been big drinkers. Whether it’s a cold one while watching rugby with the boys or cocktails and shots on a big night out, alcohol has become as much a part of our lifestyle as sunny skies and braaivleis. And, of course, as Kat says, there’s
nothing wrong with letting your hair down every now and then. It’s also okay to unwind with a glass of wine at the end of a hectic day. But ask yourself this: how often in the week does your one glass turn to two – or three or four? According to a recent report released by the World Health Organisation, South Africa ranks number four on the list of countries with the riskiest drinking patterns. A shocking 41.2 percent of SA women are binge drinkers, consuming an average of 60ml of pure alcohol a week (one standard unit is equivalent
to 10ml of pure alcohol). This means if you down more than six standard units in a single sitting, you’re technically binge-drinking. Also, by drinking more than the recommended two to three units of alcohol a day (that’s a 175ml glass of wine – i.e. one glass at most restaurants), you could be putting your health at risk. Despite the facts, many South Africans don’t believe they have a drinking problem. And besides, alcohol has its uses: nothing relieves stress, frustration and disappointment quite like a few toots. So what’s a girl to do?

EVERYTHING IN MODERATION
You could stop drinking altogether, says Georgia Foster, a renowned alcohol control specialist and author of The Drink Less Mind: The Truth Behind Overdrinking (Amazon). But that’s no fun, especially in a world where drinking has become the social norm. The more practical and achievable solution to over-drinking is to cut down with a series of effective mind techniques. “Let’s be honest, nobody wants to live in a non-alcohol world,” Georgia writes. “But it’s about managing your alcohol, as opposed to letting it manage you.” Georgia knows what it’s like to drink too much. “I spent a lot of my late teens and early twenties knocking back the vino. I got a lot of my self-esteem from alcohol, but I also got a lot of kilojoules from it and was overweight as a result. “I don’t claim to never have a hangover anymore. But the difference is I don’t drink to run away from my insecurities any longer, and I enjoy regular alcohol-free days. I drink
for pleasure and fun without the negative aspects interfering with my life.” Too much booze can lead to high blood pressure, weight gain, liver damage, throat cancer, anxiety and depression. Sobering stuff – yet Georgia believes the psychological aspects of binge-drinking are even more worrying. “If someone is using alcohol to combat emotional states such as loneliness, boredom, social and sexual anxiety, insomnia and low self-esteem, alcohol will become a problem for them.” Georgia has learnt how to be selfconfident without alcohol although she does still enjoy a glass of red wine four nights a week. “If you think you could be drinking too much, you need to train your brain to drink slower. Try the DoWo rule: drink one, water one. You would be surprised how many people drink without realising how much they’re actually drinking.” Try to commit to two or three alcohol-free days a week, she adds. Watch a movie or read a good book to keep your mind off drink. Taking milk thistle and a good vitamin C supplement before you go out will also help your liver to function better. Not able to stop at one drink? Tell yourself: “I am naturally confident without alcohol.” The more you practise this, the more your mind learns that it is safe to socialise sober. Also, try to keep a diary for three weeks, and note every drink you consume. Ask yourself what emotions you felt. Were you sleepy, tired or bored? This will help you identify your drinking triggers. ■
Your brain on alcohol Ever wondered why you lose all inhibition after a few drinks? Science has the answer: • WHY WE ACT IMPULSIVELY SMSing your ex while tipsy seems like a good idea at the time – but a disaster the next day. Alcohol makes your brain myopic, says neuroscientist Kevin Strang. In other words, able only to focus on what’s happening right in front of you. “You can’t process what will happen in the future or grasp the cause and effect of a situation,” he explains. • WHY WE EXPRESS OUR FEELINGS “If someone has been hesitant to tell someone how they feel, when they’re drunk that true feeling is much more likely to come out,” Kevin says. “This is because the parts of the brain that say, ‘I could get rejected’ slow down.” • WHY WE HAVE NO PROBLEM SPENDING MONEY Drunk people are a lot more generous than sober ones, Kevin says, which is why you’re more likely to buy a round for everyone once you’ve had a few dops. “When people aren’t thinking with so many different parts of their brain, they might not be thinking about their wallet,” he says. • WHY WE GET THE “DRUNCHIES” According to Kevin, the “drunchies” are the result of your brain shutting down higher functions. “At the very base of your brain, you’ve got the basic centres that make you breathe and your heart beat,” Kevin explains. “And a little higher there are appetite things you’re not in much control of. Like the fact that you love the taste of food.” • WHY WE DON’T FEEL PAIN “Alcohol basically acts like an anaesthetic and makes it harder for your brain to receive pain signals from your nerves,” Kevin says. Which is why that toe you stub as you stumble from the club doesn’t really hurt – until the next morning…

‘I’m often attracted to women with more stereotypically masculine characteristics’ This week Barry Bradshaw considers what it would be like dating Caitlyn Jenner
Picture: Gallo Images/Getty Images.
“SO, WOULD YOU?” asked
my friend. “Would I what?” I replied, but I knew what he was asking. We were looking at that photo of Caitlyn Jenner on the cover of Vanity Fair. “Of course not,” I said. “She’s much too old for me.” “She’s not that old.” “She’s over 60!” “Wow,” he said. “She’s looking good for her age.” I wonder if Caitlyn’s ears are burning. She’s been Bruce for the past six decades, so she probably won’t be used to random dudes around the world looking at her and judging her based on her looks. I guess that’s a whole aspect of being a woman she has to look forward to. But I was glad I had the ageist escape in that conversation, because like a lot of men (secretly), I’ve been wondering how much of a difference it would make to me if a woman I was genuinely attracted to turned out to have once been a man. I’d like to think not. It would be nice to think that I’m not bound into ideas and categories and that I’m just attracted to the people I’m attracted to, but I don’t know if I can be so
self-righteous as to make that claim. It’s a dilemma. Whenever I watch an episode of Orange Is The New Black, I find myself watching Laverne Cox more closely than everyone else. She’s definitely the most attractive of the inmates and the most fun and the one I like spending the most screen time with, but she’s also a transwoman, and in real life I can imagine myself hesitating at the last moment, unable to cross that final barrier in my mind. “It’s a bit like ostrich,” said my friend Dan. “I like red meat, and I like white meat, but sometimes when I’m eating an ostrich steak, I get freaked out by the fact that this red meat is secretly white meat.” That’s a repulsive metaphor, and he doesn’t really mean that dating is like eating supper or that women are like meat. I do sort of get what he’s trying to say, but it becomes more complicated the closer I look at it. I am attracted to women, not men, but I’m often attracted to women with more stereotypically masculine characteristics – women who are a bit taller, with what I take to be a more masculine sensibility
and sense of humour, with deeper, more even voices. I tend to be drawn in opposite directions to the more clichéd versions of femininity: away from long nails, long eyelashes, overly high heels. (This is why I often become very irritated with drag acts and cross-dressers: they’re all about celebrating an exaggerated version of being a woman, which doesn’t resemble the real qualities of real women that I most admire.) The subject is very confusing. The world is changing, and I’m pleased that people like Bruce can live more happily and freely as Caitlyn, but it certainly becomes more complicated to navigate. Complicated isn’t always a bad thing. I wish my own preconceptions and mindsets could change as fast as the world is changing, but I guess we shouldn’t underestimate the durability of our old ideas. This is an embarrassing confession to make, but I think I might be perfectly happy with a woman who once was a man – so long as I didn’t know about it. ■ NEXT WEEK: Barry on finding a partner for winter – just for warmth.

ALL NUDE
Sweet powdery pink is perfect for colour-shy individuals who still want to experiment and accessorise with a fun hue. Like Rihanna, opt for lipsticks with a satin or semi-matte finish, as they won’t be too dramatic – plus they tend to be longlasting, which is great for this soft shade.
Do like lovely Kimberly Kardashian West, and pull a head-to-toe nude look, if soft and feminine is what you’re after. The make-up is subtle, so the focus is on the skin. Enhance it with BB creams and light-reflecting products.

The key to getting Beyoncé’s smooth pout is to build up your ideal sheen with two dark shades, then add a translucent powder and finish it off with another coat of lippie. Sounds like a lot, but it’ll last so much longer. This hue likes a solo performance, so keep everything else to a minimum.

The rise of
It can affect your fat storage, the way you age, your emotional wellbeing – and wreak havoc on your skin. No wonder experts are glad gut health is finally getting the attention it deserves…
GUT FACE DIGESTION IS
one of those things you rarely think about – until there’s a problem. But this year, a raft of new books have been putting the spotlight on how poor digestive health can wreak havoc on the body and leave us feeling overweight, exhausted and stressed. “For years, people have been oblivious to the role our gut plays in everything from our skin to disease and depression,” writes nutritionist Vicki Edgson, author of Gut Gastronomy (R194 on Kindle). “Until you overhaul your digestive health, nothing else you do health-wise will make a difference.” Author of Clean Gut (from R125 on Amazon.com), Alejandro Junger – Gwyneth Paltrow and Demi Moore’s doctor – writes: “The gut is an intricate and powerful system, naturally designed to protect and heal the body every moment of every day. All of today’s most diagnosed ailments can be traced back to an injured and irritated gut.” Some of the first signs of an injured gut show up in our faces.
64
Have you got gut face? 1.
F O R E H E A D
Is it furrowed, angry or anxious? Your gut could be to blame. “The mind/gut connection is strong,” says internist Dr Vincent Pedre. “This is why, when we feel stressed or scared, we get a knot or butterflies in our stomach. Or we may go off our food or crave a type of food. And it works the other way, too – poor digestive health caused by eating the wrong foods can make us more stressed and anxious.”
2. B L O C K E D N O SE “A person with poor gut health won’t be absorbing the nutrients from their food as efficiently, so they’ll be more prone to feeling rundown and picking up regular colds,” writes Vicki. “In fact, one of the first questions I ask a new client is, ‘How often do you get ill?’, because it’s a sign of how well their digestive system is working.”

3 .
E Y E S
“One of the first places I look to determine a new client’s gut health is their eyes,” writes Vicki. “Put simply: the state of the eyes can tell the state of the gut. Dull eyes or dark under-eye circles often indicate an overloading of the entire digestive system and some toxicity.” Dr Vincent adds: “Poor digestive health also makes you look very tired in the eyes. Somebody with good digestive health will have very white, sparkly eyes that don’t look prematurely aged or tired.”
4 .
S K IN
“Certain skin conditions, like eczema, have been linked to digestive problems and food intolerances,” writes Vicki. There has always been anecdotal evidence linking eczema to food intolerance, but recent studies have backed this up. One found that people with eczema have a more varied set of gut bacteria than people without. “Changing your diet has been shown to improve skin conditions such as eczema, whereas certain inflammatory foods – like sugar – have been shown to make it worse,” says Dr Vincent.
❯
65
The good gut rules Clean out the junk Cut out processed foods and sugar for a while, reduce alcohol and caffeine, and keep an eye on wheat, gluten and dairy – they can be inflammatory to some – and see how your gut responds. If you feel energised and experience fewer digestive symptoms, like bloating, try cutting them out altogether. Eat fermented foods “Fermented foods introduce beneficial bacteria into the gut,” says Vicki. Try kefir, a fermented milk drink; miso paste, which can be made into a soup or added to salad dressings; sauerkraut, a fermented cabbage that can be bought in Polish or German supermarkets; and kombucha tea. Or have a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of boiled water each morning. Include healthy fats and good-quality protein “Fats are nourishing and have anti-inflammatory properties, and good-quality proteins are easy for the body to break down,” writes Vicki. “Organic grass-fed meat is less likely to contain antibiotics that can harm microorganisms in the gut. Similarly, organic fruit and vegetables won’t be sprayed with gut-harming pesticides.” Predigest food TIP: Drop salad ingredients into boiling water for 30 seconds, then into cold water. Eat mindfully Set aside time to eat, rather than grabbing food while doing other jobs. Listen to your stomach – it will tell you when it’s had enough. Many of us eat too quickly, which can harm the digestive system. Watch your carbs Dr Vincent recommends avoiding sugar and refined carbs (cereals, biscuits, white pasta and bread), as they damage the gut lining and feed bad bacteria. Stick to gut-friendly carbs like veggies, fruits and wholegrains. 66

THE GUT/MIND CONNECTION Now that the winter cold has properly kicked in, we’re getting lazier and want to cover up in warm blankets, skip workouts, indulge in comfort food and drink less water… But resist the temptation. Seventy percent of healthy living is based on our lifestyle, and only
30 percent on genetics, so we can be very much in control of how we look and feel. Follow these simple steps from wellness coach and independent Herbalife member Hilda Ingolfs to start working on your summer body and stay healthy and strong during winter.
GRAZIA HEALTH&BEAUTY
STEP 2: STEP 1:
Have a goal that makes you jump out of bed in the morning. In six months from now, how do you want to look and feel, and what do you want to be wearing? Have a clear picture in your mind – or even on your fridge door. Keep reminding yourself of it, and share it, with someone you trust to keep you motivated.
Balanced nutrition is the name of the game! Ideally we should eat five small meals a day, every two to three hours, that contain protein, good carbs and good fats. Start with breakfast 30 to 60 minutes after you wake up to help keep you healthy and in shape. Regular protein intake is important; think eggs, fish, chicken and other lean meats, beans, nuts, dairy products, protein drinks and protein
bars. Proteins are the body’s building blocks that keep the organs healthy and strong, give muscles power to burn fat and tone up and control hunger and cravings. Carbohydrates are needed for energy, but most of us have way too much of the processed stuff (bread, cereals, soft drinks, pizza, pasta, pap, sweets, chips, rolls, rice, sugared coffee/tea and alcohol). This results in ❯ 67
The good gut feeling Good fats: olive oil, coconut oil, nuts, seeds, avocado and omega 3 fish oils should be part of our everyday meals.
a short term energy spike but also leads to low energy levels, a bloated stomach and our body storing fat. It can also weaken the immune system, making us more susceptible to flu and other illnesses. Fresh fruits and veggies and brown rice and wholegrain pasta will give you longer lasting energy. They also contain vitamins and antioxidants to boost your immune system and fibre to cleanse the digestive system, make your stomach feel lighter and less bloated, and give you healthier skin. STEP 3:
Make vegetable soup using sweet potatoes, butternut, carrots, broccoli, onion and tomatoes.
Prevent flu (or recover): drink green tea with added lemon, ginger, honey and crushed garlic.
Good spices to use in winter: turmeric, black pepper, Himalaya salt, garlic, chilli, ginger, cinnamon.
68
STEP 4:
Plan your week to fit in a fun 30-minute workout five times a week, mixing in cardio, endurance and strength training. This will help keep you in shape, reduce stress, increase happiness and give your skin a healthy glow. Simple ways to burn a few extra calories during the day include taking the stairs at work, doing squats while you cook and starting your morning with planks and sit-ups. Anything is better than nothing. Eight hours of sleep a night and having a rest day or two every week are also key.
STEP 5:
Stay on track! Have an accountability partner who will encourage you to show up at gym and stick to your meal plan. A wellness coach or fitness group can also help you stay on track and keep your motivation up. ■ Contact wellness coach Hilda Ingolfs at Hingolfs@gmail.com, check out Facebook.com/wellnesshilda or follow her on Twitter @hilda_coach

A smart way to increase your fruit and veggie intake: add them into your breakfast smoothie or protein drink.
Water plays a vital role in the body. We need eight glasses a day for healthy digestion, radiant skin and detoxing, to keep up our energy and concentration and to help us drop fat.

IS MINDLESSNESS THE NEW MINDFULNESS? A brilliant new book called The Power Of Negative Emotion argues that mindlessly ambling through life – rather than focusing on being present, thoughtful and mindful – can lead to a happier, less stressful existence. “Mindlessness clearly contrasts the current cultural obsession with mindfulness,” says co-author Todd Kashdan. “It can help you become more productive, creative and better able to handle the hassles of daily life.” The secret to being mindless is to follow your intuition, make snap decisions, allow your concentration to wander (this can often lead to creative brilliance, say the authors) – oh, and daydream lots. RUMOUR HAS IT…
We’ve been drinking coffee at the wrong times. Apparently we should avoid coffee during peak hours like 8am to 9am, 12pm to 1pm and 5.30pm to 6.30pm. The logic is that our circadian clock, the internal biological clock responsible for rhythms that regulate many things in our bodies (including how sleepy or active we are during the day), also releases the stress hormone cortisol, which is excreted when we’re in flightor-fight mode. Our bodies release the highest levels of cortisol during those peak hours to keep us alert. If we drink caffeine at those times, it actually reduces cortisol levels, and we don’t get our own natural energy kick.

Majozi
YOU NEED TO LISTEN TO:
Ever since his latest EP, Mountains, dropped in March, we’ve been crushing on the indie folk stylings of 27-yearold Durban-based singer-songwriter Majozi. Here he tells Grazia about his love of punk rock, the first time he performed solo and the one song he’ll never ever sing again… 76
GROWING UP IN DURBAN, Nhlanhla Majozi, aka Majozi, never really had a huge desire to become a musician, he admits. Well, not until he was 13 years old and hanging out with a buddy who inadvertently set down a major challenge. “I had a friend who was always having a go at me. One day we were just messing around with a guitar and he said, ‘I'm better at playing guitar than you.' So I thought, ‘Okay, you're on,' and I started learning to play just to show him. It was then that I discovered my passion for it,” he explains. Even though he later went on to complete a foundation course in jazz and popular music at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Majozi learnt the ethics of DIY through his love of punk and heavy metal. Blink 182's Adam’s Song was the first song he ever learnt to play. “Pop punk was the kind of music I listened to back then, and Blink was pretty big. I knew a lot of guys and girls would dig it.”
And now that he's traded pop punk for acoustic guitar-driven folk, Majozi says: “I really enjoy the style of music I make now. I can also play on my own, but that comes with its own challenge of trying to capture the whole audience by myself. “There's an attitude of doing it all yourself within folk music. You don't need a whole bunch of stuff except for a message, a guitar and a little bit of skill, I guess,” he laughs. While his faith forms a big part of his songwriting inspiration, back in the day, Majozi's subject matter was a little less serious: “I was really into writing funny songs, just to give my friends a laugh. When I was in school, my mother would knit beanies, for winter and I'd sell them to my friends. Some of them were in Rastafarian colours. When I look back now, I think ‘What were you thinking?!' But, yeah, that's what inspired my song about a Rasta, called The Rasta Song. My older friends still heckle me to play it on stage. Never again. I won't play it.” These days, Majozi counts on his observational skills to provide inspiration. “I draw a lot from what I see and hear around me. I'm like a small child sometimes. I keep quiet and just look around and listen.” In the past year and a half, he has opened for everyone – from Matthew Mole to Gangs Of Ballet, as well as international acts like Yoav and The Lumineers – and played to festival crowds at White Mountain Folk Fest and Oppikoppi. It's a long way from his first performance at Boogie's Diner in Umhlanga: “It was so nerve-wracking. I'm sure I missed every single note and ended up singing in the wrong key,” he remembers, adding, “That was the first time I played on a stage, and not just in front of my family and friends. I didn't know how to stand, the floor squeaked all over the place, I played songs that no one knew… But it was fun! I enjoyed it. “When I got off stage, the first thing I thought was, ‘I need to practise!' but I definitely knew that I wanted to go back and do it all over again, yeah.” ■ You can catch Majozi performing at the Cape Town Nu World Festival on July 17, Webtickets.co.za. Or download his latest EP, Mountains (Universal), from iTunes.

E XCLUSIVE INTERVIE W YOU NEED TO WATCH:
THE HUSTLE Thanks to The Hustle, the search is on to find SA’s next rap superstar. Even though hip hop greats AKA, Khuli Chana and Tumi Molekane will be holding it down on the judges’ panel, we’re firmly focused on host DJ Sam ‘Sammy Sosa’ Lehoko. In an exclusive interview, she tells Grazia about her move from radio to TV, which judge intimidates her and the words she lives by
IS IT TRUE YOU WERE SET ON A CAREER IN PHOTOGRAPHY BEFORE YOU DISCOVERED YOUR LOVE OF RADIO?
Photography has been a passion of mine from way back. I absolutely love capturing moments; I think there is nothing more beautiful. My transition to broadcasting was accidental. I accompanied a friend to his interview at UCT – the plan was for me to take pictures while he was being interviewed. I was asked to say a few things and, as it turned out, they loved my candid and opinionated nature.
Words: Guinevere Davies. Pictures: Supplied.
WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND YOUR DJ NAME, SAMMY SOSA? HE’S A FAMOUS BASEBALL PLAYER FROM THE STATES, RIGHT?
When I was in school I had a million nicknames; people called me all sorts of things, and I admired their creativity. When I got into radio I knew I had to have a name people would remember. I thought Sam was cool and would do, but Sammy Sosa stuck. I know of the legendary baseball player, but there’s no relation, just admiration.
WHAT HAS IT BEEN LIKE FOR YOU TO MAKE THE TRANSITION FROM RADIO TO TV OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS?
Usually people go from TV to radio, but I went the other way round. Radio is a lot more difficult in the sense that you have to shape people’s imaginations, whereas TV puts
pressure on you in terms of how you look and are portrayed. Being on TV has been a lot scarier, because people now put a face to the voice. I think audiences love that I’m so opinionated and honest.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BIGGEST LESSONS YOU’VE LEARNT ABOUT YOURSELF AND OTHERS IN THE LEAP FROM BEING HEARD TO BEING SEEN?
es Tumi Above from left: The Hustle judg and host Molekane, Khuli Chana , AKA in) Sam “Sammy Sosa” Lehoko (ma
The industry, as much fun as it is, can also be toxic. The whole partying and drinking atmosphere can get a little overwhelming. I’ve learnt how to keep my circle small and focus on my goals, because not everyone has good intentions. I have also learnt that your last mistake is always your best teacher.
ARE YOU A BIG HIP HOP FAN?
I grew up listening to jazz – that’s my favourite genre of music. My two older brothers are into hip hop, so I have been exposed to different genres. I would call my taste eclectic.
HAD YOU MET ANY OF THE JUDGES BEFORE YOU SIGNED UP TO HOST THE HUSTLE?
I am very close with AKA, so luckily for us we get to rub shoulders a lot more now. I also spend a lot of time with Khuli; he is really reliable and also very supportive. I hadn’t met Tumi before, so I thought he was tough. I didn’t think he would be
as sweet and open-minded as he is. I’m still intimidated by him, but maybe that’s because I don’t know him well enough.
DO YOU AGREE WE’RE LACKING IN FEMALE MCS IN LOCAL HIP HOP?
I think we have incredible female vocalists in SA, like Thandiswa Mazwai and Moneoa, but we don’t dominate the scene, which is sad, as I feel that there are female MCs that are just as great as the male rappers. Our female rappers need to be given more opportunities.
WE COULDN’T HELP NOTICING YOUR IMPRESSIVE INK…
I’ve always viewed tattoos as a form of expression, and getting my first tattoo felt liberating. My dad used to say: “Love your people, love your work, love your education.” It stuck with me, so I had it tattooed. I also have my son’s name tattooed across my chest. ■ The Hustle begins July 14 at 7.30pm on Vuzu Amp. You can also follow Sammy on Instagram @sam_lehoko 77

10 QUESTIONS These are the questions you need to ask to get to know someone. We found out that 19-year-old up-and-coming rapper Patty Monroe is all about R.E.S.P.E.C.T and making people smile. We like!
WHAT IS YOUR EARLIEST MEMORY? Me standing by the door of my sister’s room and crying because my brother and sister were saying they couldn’t see me. I always hated the invisible game. WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST FEAR? Not finding love. RELAXATION IS… Reading a good book – it helps take my mind to other worlds. I like playing in the clouds, and reading lets me do that.
78
TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOU THAT WILL SHOCK US… If my father were still alive, he would be 86. He was 66 when I was born. WHEN DID YOU LAST FEEL REALLY HAPPY? When I knew I was going back to Cape Town – just knowing that I’m going to see my family soon puts the biggest smile on my face. WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST REGRET? I don’t regret anything. Everything that has happened has brought me to this moment, and this is where I want to be.
WHAT ARE YOU BEST AT DOING? Making people smile. It really is a gift. So is being able to laugh at ourselves and our surroundings.
WHAT’S THE ONE THING YOU’D CHANGE ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR LIFE? I am happy with who I am, but if I had to change one thing, it would be the amount of years I got to spend with my father. Just a few more years. He was an amazing man, and I miss him.
WHAT DO YOU VALUE MOST IN A PARTNER? Respect! Without it, a relationship doesn’t make any sense.

WHO ARE YOU CLOSEST TO? I’m really close to my family. Family is everything to me. Even though we don’t get to see each other as much as we would like, we try to talk every day.

not to make
We’ve watched enough home-improvement TV shows to know that sometimes a little DIY goes a long way. But be warned, customising your house too much can reduce the value of your property and make selling it a nightmare. Here are the so-called improvements to avoid…
CUSTOM DESIGN DECISIONS Avoid permanently installing anything that is overly personalised. If you decide to sell your place, neutral updates will work better – think lighthued tiles, curtains and modest light fittings. It is better to introduce your own personality and taste with soft furnishings. Bright scatter cushions, linens and rugs can be taken with you, leaving the buyer with a blank canvas on which to put their own stamp. Remember, blowing up that beach print from your honeymoon will work better on a canvas than as wallpaper in the long run!

ROOM CONVERSIONS We can all be tempted to break down the walls of seldom-used guest rooms to make the main suite larger. While this may seem like a bright idea at the time, it’s important to bear in mind that more bedrooms usually places your home in a higher price bracket. If you need a little extra space, convert the guest room into something you’ll actually use, like a craft room, media room or even a home office. This way, you’ll have all the extra living space you need without bashing down any walls and reducing your property’s value.

OVERDOING IT Yes, the kitchen is the heart of the home, but it doesn’t mean you can get away with going overboard when it comes to designing it. The last thing you want to do is fill it with built-in appliances – like a coffee machine or dishwasher – and finishes that don’t work with the style of the house. Rather update the kitchen modestly, and then add extras that you can take with you. Free-standing appliances will work in your next home, giving you greater return on them as investments. It’s important to be aware of the trends in your neighbourhood too.

WHAT TO DO 1. Heat the olive oil in a frying pan and fry the garlic and chilli for two minutes, until the garlic has softened but not coloured. 2. Add the canned tomatoes, thyme, sugar and stock, and leave to simmer on medium heat for 15 minutes. 3. Add the fish fillets, put the lid on, and leave to poach for about four minutes, or until they are almost cooked through. 4. Add the mussels and calamari, and
poach for another 3-4 minutes or until the mussels have opened. Remove from the heat, discard any mussels that have not opened, stir through the lemon juice and fresh basil or parsley, and add a generous pinch of salt and freshly ground black pepper. 5. In the meantime, preheat the oven’s grill to the highest setting, slice the ciabatta rolls in half (or four to six slices), and place under the grill for two or three
minutes until golden. Remove, rub the garlic clove gently two or three times on each side, drizzle with olive oil and top with Parmesan shavings. 6. GRAZIA HOROSCOPE
CANCER June 22 – July 23
The coming week looks set to be dreamy and romantic. If you’re coupled up, it’s a good time to discuss your ideal future together or, if solo, to break your routine or plan an adventure that could lead to romance, whether or not love is what you’re seeking. In either case, let your imagination run riot, then work out how you can incorporate the fantasy into your reality. It’s all highly possible now. LEO July 24 – August 23

If you feel like you’ve lost that loving feeling or that your recent glow of inner beauty has dimmed a little, don’t worry. It’s temporary, and both will be back in full force soon. So turn your attention to your finances and your values. What comes easily can go just as easily, so avoid quick fixes, and find surefire ways to secure your future – financial and otherwise.
AQUARIUS January 21 – February 19
VIRGO August 24 – September 23
Your well-being is your priority this week. Mercury puts you in the right mindset, Mars helps you work your body, and the sun gives you energy to keep it up. Workouts at home and eating right are important. Keep it simple, and do it because you love your body, not because you hate it. It looks like someone else loves you and your body now too, or is about to.
Love is on your to-do list now, but there’s a chance you may not be quite ready for it yet as you see it as a thing to be accomplished rather than a pleasure to be indulged in. Venus is in your sign, but only briefly before it reverses out again, a sure indication that a review of your approach will bring you the kind of love you want and deserve in your life – and soon.
PISCES February 20 – March 20
LIBRA September 24 – October 23
It’s a great week to show your love via your culinary skills. The way to a lover’s heart is through the stomach for you now, so plan picnics, have candle-lit dinners, or feed each other aphrodisiac delights – it all works to raise the romantic temperature to hot, hot, hot! Turning a home-based talent into a profitable sideline could also be food for thought now.
While money, home and health seem to be stuck in limbo, your career gets a boost of cosmic energy this week. Where you work, what you do, and who you do it with or for are extra important. Work needs to feel fulfilling to keep your emotional life in balance, and you now have the va-va-voom to make the changes you need. Relationships are less erratic too.
ARIES March 21 – April 20
SCORPIO October 24 – November 22
Your nesting instinct kicks in this week. Your home might be under discussion, or it might be the hub of conversation as you fill it with fascinating friends or update it with a fabulous, cosy new look. You’re also all about health now, so extend this feeling to the kitchen, where experimenting with food that nurtures you helps balance your mind, body and soul.
Plans that might have felt as if they’d stalled will start to gather speed now. Friends and groups can help with a personal goal, though you may need to put things on hold to focus on a career development. There could also be the stirrings of love with someone in your social circle, or a blast from the past could resurface. Think twice before getting involved.
TAURUS April 21 – May 20
SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22
Conversations you have now are likely to be centred on where you live, how you live and how to improve things. Not that there’s anything wrong with your lifestyle, but there are home skills you could add to your repertoire to make your space better. It’s also a good time to refresh your love life as this week you get a tantalising taste of romantic things to come.
This week work gets easier, people are nicer to deal with, and you can see where your career could be going. It looks like there are things you need to learn to make that big leap and be taken more seriously. Even so, put the fun you’re famous for back into your life. Being authentic, rather than someone you think you should be, is part of the secret of success.
GEMINI May 21 – June 21
CAPRICORN December 23 – January 20
Invest in yourself and where you live this week. Your career may feel like it’s drifting, and you need strong foundations to anchor you, so putting down roots or turning a house into a home is extra important. You might be at odds with friends who prefer your spontaneity, but calm, focused commitment suits you better now than being all over the place.
There’s a flirtatious feel to the week as Mars and Mercury add banter to all you do, personally and professionally. But this could be masking a deeper situation linked to a power play, a money issue, a yearning for freedom, or intense passion masquerading as playful jokiness. Don’t take things at face value now; look below the surface for their true meaning. 87
And finally... Padma Patil is all grown up. Like Neville Longbottom before her, the awkward phase for Hogwarts alumnus Padma Patil, aka British actress Afshan Azad, is officially over. The Harry Potter star has clearly grown up a lot in the past ten years. We bet Ron Weasley is kicking himself now.
jokes? Brooklyn Beckham does! The 16-year-old couldn’t help but poke fun at mom Victoria’s Spice Girl alter ego when he shared a snap of himself in a supermarket on Instagram with the caption, “Not 2 posh 2 push”. Cheeky.
STEPHEN COLBERT MET EMINEM. ADIDAS MADE A PAIR OF SNEAKERS FROM OCEAN TRASH. By partnering with
the environmentalists at Parley For The Oceans, Adidas was able to create a prototype pair of sneakers made entirely from discarded waste, including sea nets found in the ocean. These sneakers are a step forward for the brand, which promises to use recycled fibres from 2016. Love. 88
Seeing that he’s going to be filling David Letterman’s Late Show shoes in September, Stephen Colbert put his talk-show hosting skills to the ultimate test by guest hosting Michigan’s Only In Monroe public-access show. Eminem popped by for a chat – and managed to become Stephen’s favourite Bob Seger-cover rapper.

GRAZIA NEWS STEPHEN KING’S DOG IS RIDICULOUSLY CUTE.
Even though the king of horror fiction likes to refer to his beloved Corgi, Molly, as “the thing of evil”, it’s clear she’s all kinds of adorable. Judging from Stephen’s snaps of Molly on Facebook, this six-month-old pup is a huge fan of chewing beds, books and boxes of tissues. Oh, and she’s warming our hearts!
Donna Karan is stepping down. We can’t imagine Donna Karan International without her, but after 31 years in the fashion game, the iconic designer has decided to step down as the chief designer. Donna’s runway collection shows will be suspended, and the company won’t seek a replacement, as Donna turns her attention towards her philanthropic venture, the Urban Zen Foundation. At least the DKNY label will live on, thanks to Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne taking over design duties.
This model has the perfect butt, apparently. Meet Natasha Wagner. According to those in the know, she’s the first person denim brands – including Levi’s, Gap and 7 For All Mankind – will call when they need to test a new pair of jeans, as the LA model apparently has “the perfect size-six figure”.
LUPITA NYONG’O HELPED SAVE ELEPHANTS. After filming in SA, Lupita
made her way to Kenya to fulfil her duties as the global elephant ambassador for WildAid, the conservation organisation trying to end the illegal wildlife trade. The Oscar winner shared snaps on Instagram and said: “I have come to realise that when you know more, you do more. I want to encourage people to learn more about these incredible animals.” 89
