WARTIME PROPAGANDA POSTER RESEARCH

Propaganda is known as information, used to promote a political cause or point of view. Moreover, it is combined the psychological mechanism of influencing and altering the attitude of a population toward a specific cause, position or political agenda.

WHAT IS PROPAGANDA?

It is not a journalism information, mainly aimed to influence the audiences by presenting the facts to encourage a synthesis, loading message in other to produce emotional rather rational. In the past, propaganda was a neutral descriptive term, which is different from today as a manipulate and jingoistic approach.

VO PHUONG THAO - EDEXCEL 6

There are three kinds of propaganda, such as white, black and Grey propaganda. White propaganda is the most truthful as it is based on factual elements. In another hand, Black propaganda is come from one source and put out by opposing government. Propaganda which is not come from identifiable source or author and known as legitimate arguments, is Grey ones.

POSTER INFORMATION This poster is a piece of English propaganda from The Second World War. The artwork has thought to have been created in the period of 1939-1946. However, the artist of this is unknown, according to The National Archives, it is belonged to Central Office of Information. MESSAGE It’s art style also compliments perfectly. The idea of two flats tying up symbolizes the lifeless carrying out such an essential human action when knowing the threat of Hitler. The splash brush strokes together with simple color scheme help to state the purpose of the poster, and reflect how serious and professional the aim is. Using its simple and brash as the government wished that the act of strangling “Hitlerism” would be. The Government wouldn’t want to panic anyone and make them to be scared when seeing this poster. Therefore, the art style reflects how simple and effortless banding together to face Hitler would be. DESIGN STYLE This kind of almost childlike art style with a very serious message is easily found in the early stages of design for propaganda poster. One of the main design elements is the way that the page is separated in two by the two blocks of color and it works really well to combine a hard hitting image with a few words that effectively convey a point.

COLOR SCHEME The poster is mainly using light blue, and light yellow aura. The meaning of the light blue are peace, serenity, ethereal, spiritual and infinity. The light yellow aura is associated with joy and freedom. Moreover, yellow colors relate to a sense of awakening and inspiration. The color blue together with aura yellow emphasize the message of this artwork with optimistic future and hope of freedom. The word "Hitlerism" colors with red and black background predicts strongly the death of Hitler's power if people around the world "together strangle Histlerism". Furthermore, the red and blue color in the poster's message show the connection of UK and Russia due to the main national flats color. VO PHUONG THAO - EDEXCEL 6

TOGETHER WE SHALL STRANGLE HITLERISM

AUDIENCE The target audience for this poster everyone throughout the world (especially in the UK and Russia due to the two flats). It doesn’t seem to focus on one group of people. It is a moral boosting piece designed to encourage confidence in civilians that their country will stand firm and win the war if everyone is hand in hand to fight against the Hitlerism. bauhaus School of design

Staatliches Bauhaus commonly known simply as Bauhaus, was an art school in Germany that combined crafts and the fine arts, and was famous for the approach to design that it publicized and taught. It operated from 1919 to 1933. The German term “Bauhaus”— literally “construction house” — was understood as meaning “School of Building”.

The Bauhaus was founded by Walter Gropius in Weimar. In spite of its name and the fact that its founder was an architect, the Bauhaus did not have an architecture department during its first years of existence.

The school existed in three German cities: Weimar from 1919 to 1925, Dessau from 1925 to 1932 and Berlin from 1932 to 1933, under three different architect-directors: Walter Gropius from 1919 to 1928, Hannes Meyer from 1928 to 1930 and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe from 1930 until 1933, was closed by its own leadership under pressure from the Nazi regime. Although the school was closed, the staff continued to spread its idealistic precepts as they left Germany and emigrated all over the world.

The Bauhaus style later became one of the most influential currents in modern design, Modernist architecture and art, design and architectural education. The Bauhaus had a profound influence upon subsequent developments in art, architecture, graphic design, interior design, industrial design, and typography.

Bauhaus Nesting Tables

Bauhaus Tea Infuser Designed in 1924 by Marianne Brandt, the Bauhaus tea infuser has a built-in strainer, non-drip spout, and heat-resistant handle made of ebony, embracing the school's principals of combining functionality and aesthetic.

Nothing quite says "smart" like five separate tables that fit into the footprint of one. And the use of colors with each table is something that would be revisited by Ray and Charles Eames decades later.

The Bauhaus Cradle emerged in the early days of the German design school, but the simplicity of this magazine holder, both with regard to the form and colors used, doesn't undermine the inherent playfulness of the design. VISUAL COMMUNICATION IN ART & DESIGN

VO PHUONG THAO - EDEXCEL 6

This was the motto of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, a proponent of minimalism in architecture. That which is less complicated is often better understood and more appreciated than what is more complicated; simplicity is preferable to complexity; brevity in communication is more effective than verbosity. Herbert Bayer 1900 - 1985

In 1959, he designed his "fonetik alfabet", a phonetic alphabet, for English. It was sans-serif and without capital letters. He had special symbols for the endings "-ed, -ory, -ing, and -ion", as well as the digraphs "ch", "sh", and "ng". An underline indicated the doubling of a consonant in traditional orthography.

Herbert Bayer was an Austrian and American graphic designer, painter, photographer, sculptor, art director, environmental and interior designer, and architect, who was widely recognized as the last living member of the Bauhaus and was instrumental in the development of the Atlantic Richfield Company's corporate art collection until his death in 1985.

From 1925 to 1930, Bayer designed a geometric sans-serif Proposal for a Universal Typeface. These designs are now issued in digital form as Bayer Universal. The design also inspired "ITC Bauhaus" and "Architype Bayer", which bears comparison with the stylistically related typeface "Architype Schwitters". VISUAL COMMUNICATION IN ART & DESIGN

Standing Objects, 1936 In 1936, he designed a brochure for the Deutschland Ausstellung, an exhibition for tourists in Berlin during the 1936 Olympic Games. In 1937, works of Bayer's were included in the Nazi propaganda exhibition "Degenerate Art", upon which he left Germany.

VO PHUONG THAO - EDEXCEL 6

In the spirit of reductive minimalism, Bayer developed a crisp visual style and adopted use of all-lowercase, sans serif typefaces for most Bauhaus publications.

A chair is a piece of furniture with a raised surface, commonly used to seat a single person. Chairs are supported most often by four legs and have a back; however, a chair can have three legs or can have a different shape. Chairs are made of a wide variety of materials, ranging from wood to metal to synthetic material, and they may be padded or upholstered in various colors and fabrics, either just on the seat or on the entire chair. Chairs are used in a number of rooms in homes (e.g., in living rooms, dining rooms and dens), in schools and offices (with desks), and in various other workplaces. CHAIR ANALYSIS

STOOL A stool is one of the earliest forms of seat furniture. It consists of a single seat, for one person, without back or armrests, on a base of either three or four legs.

VO PHUONG THAO - EDEXCEL 6

A stool is generally distinguished from chairs by their lack of arms and a back. Variants exist with one, two or five legs and these various stools are referred to by some people as “backless chairs”.

Recycling is one of the best ways for you to have a positive impact on the world in which we live. Recycling is important to both the natural environment and us as waste has a huge negative impact on the natural environment. It reduces the need for raw materials so that the rainforests can be preserved. Recycling requires much less energy and therefore helps to preserve natural resources. 14

The concept of this poster is coming from Bauhaus design style. I made with the two main color of Bauhaus: Red and Brown Yellow. The geometry I use is circle to show the "lifecycle" of recycled products, reuse for a better protected life. The message of this poster is clear: "Recycle for Lifecycle. Reuse.Reduce" - it encourages the readers to use recycled product - here is the pictogram I made for recycled stool - which will help the Earth become less pollution. In May 29th, 2016, the fashion show named "The Superstar" of designer Adrian Anh Tuan took place extremely exciting and special at the Independence Palace. Perhaps, in the minds of most of us, superstar is the artists, multi-talented actors outburst under the spotlight. But through this show, superstar can be more meaningful than that. Perhaps, in the minds of most of us, superstar is the artists, multi-talented actors outburst under the spotlight. But through this show, superstar can be more meaningful than that. Part I of the show opened with ideas taken from the sea. Marine environmental protection is what Adrian Tuan want to convey. Part II, which was the most expect, titled Real People. Adrian Tuan had redefined the term "superstar" with special models appeared on the catwalk. Part III of the show might be the time Adrian Tuan released his collection "Superstar Because You Are!". The collection opened with star motifs on the design models which was carried the breath of 80s disco.

The "models" are full size, high or low, brought to us a close look to see fashion. Stylist Kelbin Lei has successfully completed the mission of coordinating outfits to flatter different charismatic individual. Second collection with detailed lace, mesh and sparkling beaded creates a visual feast on the catwalk. Part II truly reflected the spirit of the value "ready-to-wear" in the show. It is also appreciated as a strategic move to consolidate "See now buy now" in the world.
