Where did you go to school? The University of New Brunswick Tell me about your family? My Wife is Beth MacPherson, together we have 8 beautiful children and our soon to be first Grand baby and our little yellow parakeet named Peep, like the marshmallow yellow Peep candy, lol… Tell me about your morning routine? I get up at 5:30 am for 15-20 minutes of Morning Devotion and Bible Reading, then I enjoy Cup of Tea or 2 while I do emails, voice mails, and shower so I can be out the door by 8 a.m. Favourite place to eat? Simms for Steak, Swiss Chalet for Chicken and Ribs, Maid Marion’s for Breakfast, The Noodle House for Chinese and Papa Joe’s with Jason and every 85 Burger Love burger locations possible on PEI. We love to eat!

Favourite vacation spot? Cuba! Friendliest Islanders next to Cape Breton and PEI. Hobbies? Curling, Golf, Volunteering at local charities to help the less fortunate in PEI AND in April it will be spending time with our first born Grand Baby.

Brad’s son had told him that when he grew up, he wanted to do what his Daddy did. With those words echoing in his head, Brad set out to find the best mortgage business in the industry; a firm that would provide training and support; a firm that had the same family core values he was working to instill in his son. His research led him to Don MacVicar, Founder and CEO of Premiere Mortgage Centre. After meeting the Premiere team, Brad was convinced that Premiere had everything he was looking for. Meeting with Don at the corporate office in Halifax, Brad was offered a position with the company as a Commercial Mortgage Broker in Atlantic Canada to help develop a commercial division for the company. Premiere Mortgage had no representation in Prince Edward Island and the entrepreneur in Brad saw the opportunity. Brad was familiar with PEI. He had been vacationing in PEI with his family since he was a boy and he had always wanted to live here. That desire had grown even stronger when he married his wife Beth, a born and bred Islander from Brackley. In 2015, in the midst of a huge Nor’easter that dumped 88 cm of snow on the province, Brad and Beth moved to PEI and Brad began to build Premier Mortgage Center’s presence in Prince Edward Island.

BRAD MACPHERSON was born and raised in Cape Breton, NS. Brad was introduced to the entrepreneurial spirit early in life by his parents who operated a coin op and vending business. Brad embraced the vision and when he was 13 years old, he hit the streets with his first business, peddling a Dickie Dee Ice Cream bike. That was just the beginning for Brad. In 1990, Brad was a Co-Founder of Canada’s first Video Lottery Gaming Program as a Licensed VLT Operator in New Brunswick. Their operations expanded to include commercial investment properties and several small to medium size enterprises in Atlantic Canada. In 1996, as Founder and President of one of Canada’s leading Information Technology companies, Brad has the opportunity to take his privately owned and operated company public on a Canadian Stock Exchange, subsequently selling the company to one of Canada’s largest pay phone companies. But just like Thomas Edison who failed 10,000 times before he got the light bulbs right, life in business was not all successes for Brad. Reflecting on those challenges, failures and lessons learned, Brad realized that he needed corporate training as a business executive and he found what he was looking for when he joined the team at Xerox Corporation. If you had of told me in August 1981 when the interest rates in Canada were 22.75%, that in April of 2009 interest rates would decrease to an all time low at 2.25%: I would have thought you were crazy. If you told me in April 2009 that in 2019 interest rates may increase again to an all time high, I would not argue the matter. However, economist do not have a ‘crystal ball’ to read the future; so we always advise our clients to make decisions based on their long term plans, not on an economists prediction.

Working with my kiddos. Being an entrepreneurial family means inventing and implementing, together. I’m fortunate my kids seem to have “caught the bug” early. Part of my experience of being an entrepreneur has been learning how to deal with Failure. It isn’t a “happily ever after” story when running a business. In fact, the life of an entrepreneur is mostly about learning from mistakes (I’m a pro!, Ha!). Because some of my kiddos now also run small business ventures of their own, I’ve had the blessing of also watching my kiddos victories and experiencing their failures.

Elaine Nguyen started out her life in Vietnam. After spending 6 years studying in Melbourne, Australia, she returned to Vietnam and built a 13 year career working for international schools. Elaine, tell me about your personal experience with the Provincial Nominee Program in PEI?

As you continue to grow your business, do you offer any unique matching services to help Islanders sell their property to Newcomers?

My husband and I and our two children came to PEI through the PNP program. To fulfill the requirement of the program, we purchased a motel in Cornwall in 2015 which we continue to operate today. We are so happy with our move. I love PEI and I am sure there is nowhere else as pretty as it is here.

I can also offer services after the purchase including property management which is very helpful to clients from away and those who are new to Island and trying to adjust to a new way of life. Often through the buying process, I form friendship with my clients that remain even when our business together is complete.

What does 2018 look like for new immigrants to PEI? I expect to see hundreds of new families arriving on PEI in the coming years; even more than in the past. Newcomers are looking for single homes to live in and multi units as income properties. Non-residents are also buying houses before they arrive. They watch the market and when a good home coming up for sale, they will buy it right away. Apartment buildings or rows of town houses are also appealing to newcomers as investment properties.

I have made strong connections with various immigration agencies and I really enjoy meeting newcomers and helping them, not only with real estate but also with the practical side of getting settled and making friends here. I have also had the pleasure of helping Islanders, mostly seniors. I really enjoy working with buyers. I help them to connect with mortgage brokers, lawyers, home inspectors and insurance agents. I am honest, trustworthy and responsible. My clients quickly learn that they can trust me which helps makes the process more enjoyable.

In your first 2 years as a REALTOR® in PEI, can you tell me about your clients?

Yes, I work with so many newcomers that I know their unique needs and wants. I market local properties through social media using my connections around the world. I use high quality professional photos and videos to make sure that my listings are well presented to international ZAPPA buyers even before they arrive on PEI. The Island has experienced a significant change in diversity over the last 2 to 3 years due to immigration. Change is hard sometimes but this is a good thing for PEI. Diversity brings prosperity, new friendships and new neighbours!

What differences have you noticed between Newcomers who make PEI their new permanent home and those who quickly move to Toronto or another large Canadian Cities? Most newcomers who invest in a good business will likely stay around for longer term to enjoy what the Island has to offer. Some who prefer big city life, may simply fulfill their obligation and then leave the Island. To improve sustainability for the immigrants and young Islanders, the Island government would need to generate and attract good quality industries and jobs which would make staying on the Island and earning decent living more appealing. The Island has enormous potential – we need to tap into it.

What impression do you have of the next 5 years in PEI Real Estate? I think average prices will increase significantly and we will see more construction of both homes and multi-unit buildings. As the population grows and changes, the real estate market should be strong and active. It is an exciting time to be involved in the real estate industry.
