ummer on the Riviera is in full swing, and July has to be the busiest month on the Nice calendar! So much so, we struggled to fit everything in! But alas, we have done it, and present to you all that you need to make this the best July in Nice ever!

The city is alive with the sound of music, with everything from classical orchestra, to jazz-rock and Afro-pop. So be sure to read our July Calendar for information on where to be, when and what to expect this month!

While we all love lazy days on the beach, it’s also nice to escape the blazing sun with a picnic in the park. Our Day in Nice section brings you some fantastic picnic hotspots that offer more than just a shady tree! La Castellada La Castellada – July Tues to Sat Colline du Château on the hill is the setting for Nice’s summer Castellada festival, which celebrates the season with medieval and Baroque music concerts and puppet shows for children.

Visitors can also take a walk through the hillside gardens, with costumed actors recounting the history of the city on the way. If you want to take part, wear comfortable shoes and head for the meeting place at the base of the steps winding up the hill (for the walk), or the square in front of the old Château Cathedral for the concerts.

Nice en Roller - 27th-28th July For 2 days, Nice’s Parc des Sports Charles Ehrmann is taken over by roller-bladers showing off their acrobatic skills for the annual “Coupe du Monde de Roller Acrobatique”.

The competition includes a high jump category alongside speed slalom and free-style racing. Watch the professionals show how it’s done, then head to the Promenade des Anglais and join the other enthusiasts who skate along the seafront throughout the year.

Find them at 155 route de Grenoble. By bus, get a number 23 bus that will drop you outside the stadium.

Or by car, take the A8 and exit at Nice Saint-Augustin, exit number 51.

This is one of the major jazz festivals in the world and attracts close to 50,000 visitors each year.

Set in the beautiful Cimiez Arenas and gardens, the festival embraces a mixture of musical genres, including soul, rock & blues as well as jazz.

With the 2,000-year-old amphitheatre now undergoing renovation, the Matisse and Jardin stages will be entrusted with this year’s festival.

There are 5 open-air concerts each evening per stage, and people are free to wander from concert to concert between 7pm and midnight.

In addition, there are “alternative” or “fringe” festivals in Nice’s various neighbourhoods, including a large stage at the Palais de Justice.

Bastille day - 14th of July

Join in the sensational atmosphere as the entire city descends on the beach for a firework spectacular. La Fête Nationale is a celebration of the 1789 storming of the Bastille fortress-prison, which is seen as a symbol of the uprising of the short-lived constitutional monarchy in France and what people considered the happy conclusion of the French Revolution. Fireworks generally kick off at sunset, around 10.30pm.

A day in NICE Picnic Hotspots What is summer for if not picnicking under shady trees with friends, a bottle of wine, perhaps a game of cricket or hacky sack and breezy afternoon naps? This month, we show you how to escape the blazing summer sun and chill at the best gardens across the city!

The Château

Parc Phoenix Now this is a picnic hotspot with a difference. For only 2€ (free entry for children under 12) you get to picnic in the large botanical gardens and intersperse your day with visits to a host of interesting plant and animal species. There’s over 7 hectares of manicured gardens, shady palm trees and water fountains. Dotted throughout the park are enclosures offering the most interesting (and sometimes downright scary) exhibitions including free-walking iguanas; turtles; flamingos; giant gold fish; an aquarium with tropical fish, sharks and eels; free spirited otters; ostriches and owls; and an entire section dedicated to creepy crawlies (spider phobic’s be aware). Undoubtedly, Parc Phoenix is a hit with the young ones, but it is also a great place for the rest of us to relax in beautiful gardens while being entertained by the wonders of the world. Small markets are set up at the entrance of the park offering local artwork. And there is a kiosk on the grounds, however the queues get annoyingly long in summer, so try to bring everything you need in your picnic basket!

Above the hustle and bustle of the city lies Cimiez, with its large olive grove filled park, an Archaeology museum, Matisse museum, the Franciscan Museum & Monastery, and the Gallo-Roman ruins.

Vast open spaces and hundreds of trees make for perfect picnicking. Join the locals in a game of pétanque, or bring a bat, ball and other sporting equipment and make the most of the open space. Once you have finished lunch you can tour the site of the old Roman baths. Wander freely among the crumbling walls of the old city and marvel at the sheer grandeur and ingenuity of the Romans. Don’t forget to grab a map on your way into the ruins (available in English). Then top it all off with a tour of the world famous museums.

How to get there: catch the 22 bus and get off at the Matisse stop.

The Château The Château deserves more than just a quick visit.

Pack a picnic, grab some friends and spend the day above Nice. While there’s no Château as such, there are ruins and remnants of the ancient Greek city of Nikea – this is, in fact, where Nice began. Of course, the real pleasure lies in the amazing views of the harbour, the red scrambled rooftops of vieux Nice and the panorama of Promenade des Anglais.

Catch the refreshing spray of the waterfall, and stroll along stony tracks that cut through forest-like gardens. The Château can get quite hot, so don’t forget to pack a hat and sunscreen.

How to get there: If you’re packing a large picnic, then the lift is probably better than trudging up 213 stairs! Both the stairs and the lift can be found just off quai des États-Unis, and there are further stairs in the old town at Montée du Château.

How to get there: by car – following the signs, turn off to Parc Phoenix just before you reach the airport. Try and park on the street as the parking lot costs around 5€ for 2 hours! By bus – No’s 9,10 or 23.

Europe’s Grand Canyon The Gorges du Verdon

is a spectacular sight to behold. This breathtaking, natural phenomenon is considered one of the most beautiful canyons in all of Europe, with startling turquoise-green waters and imposing limestone cliffs that tower hundreds of meters above sea level.

At around 25 kilometres in length and up to 700 metres deep, this is the world’s second largest gorge. Drive along the course of the gorge and marvel at its spectacular scenery, or immerse yourself in its natural beauty with kayaking, hiking, cycling and rock climbing.

At 130km in diameter, it can be difficult to know the best places to stop. So here are some suggestions. The most impressive part lies between the towns of Castellane and Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, where the river flows into the artificial lake of Sainte-Croix-du-Verdon (Lac de Sainte-Croix).

The Verdon Gorge is easily accessible on its right bank from the north (via route D952 from Castellane to Moustiers-Sainte-Marie), and on its left bank from the south (via routes D71, D90 and D995 from Aiguines to Castellane).

From the city of Aups, the road north leads to the western end of the Gorges du Verdon. After 16km of deserted scrubland and hills, you reach the canyon. At this point, the Balcons de la Mescla, you can look down 250m to the base of the v-shaped, 21km long gorge. The huge, artificial Lac de Ste-Croix, filled by the Verdon as it leaves the gorge, is great for swimming when the water levels are high. West of the Balcons runs the

Corniche sublime (D71), designed to give the most breathtaking and hair-raising views. Similarly, the Route des Crêtes on the north side (D952) offers a similar experience – an 800m sheer drop into the silver waters below.

In order to experience the beauty and grandness of the canyon, it is worth hiring one of the kayaks, paddleboats or small engine boats on offer. Prices start at around 20€. Or do as the locals do, and take your own blow-up bed and float down the gorge!

Camping: There’s a municipal campsite, Le Grand Canyon, 800m west of Rougon. If this is full, there are 6 other campsites around the town.

How to get there from Nice, Take the A8 towards Cannes/Aix-en-Provence.

Take exit 36.Continue along N555, take left exit towards Le Muy. Pass through Vidauban and turn right onto D48/Avenue Maximin Martin. Continue along, at the roundabout take 3rd exit to D562. Pass through Lorgues.

Take D562/Boulevard Frédéric Mistral. At the roundabout, Rond-Point Jean Moulin, take 2nd exit D10/Avenue de la Libération. At roundabout, Rond-Point du Souvenir Français, take 3rd exit to D10/Route de Salernes. Pass by Villecroze and you will reach Aups. Head north to the western edge of the gorge.

The Gorges du Loup is another spectacular gorge, right on our doorstep. It is a little easier to access and closer to Nice than Gorges du Verdon. The beautiful, narrow Gorges du Loup flows through some of the most striking scenery in Provence, and offers mesmerising waterfalls and refreshing swimming lagoons.

The Gorges du Loup cuts through the hills at the foot of Gourdon before flowing into the Mediterranean Sea at Bouches-du-Loup. It is 49km in length and is fed by streams running down the north face of the Montagne de l’Audibergue. Here, you will find amazing waterfalls cascading down rock cliffs; refreshing swimming holes; an abundance of wildlife and plant life; and the perfect location for hiking, cycling or backpacking. The D2210 road along the forested edge of the hills runs from Châteauneuf-Pré-du-Lac (near Grasse) through Bar-sur-Loup, Pont-du-Loup, Tourrettessur-Loup and Vence. Gourdon itself is a lovely perched village on the high cliffs. The Cascade de Courmes (waterfall) can be found about 4km up the valley.

Tourrettes-sur-Loup is a lovely medieval village perched above the rocky hills. It dates back to 1024. A visit to Tourrettes must include a sampling of their specialty - tarte à l’orange.

How to get there: From Nice, take exit 48 from the A8 (Cagnes-sur-Mer). Go straight and head for La Colle-sur-Loup for about 2km, then turn right on the D6 towards Gréolières/Pont-du-Loup - this is the lower gorge. To enter the Gorges du Loup itself, continue on D6 by going straight across the crossroads near the village of Pont du Loup. Alternatively: Take exits 47 or 48 and head to Vence, then take the D2210 to Tourrettes-sur-Loup. After a stop here, continue towards Pont du Loup, and turn right just before you reach the city.

Restaurant Reviews ADONIS With an abundance of pizza and pasta in the heart of Nice, it is refreshing to find Adonis, an authentic Lebanese restaurant that combines the sophistication of European cuisine with the excitement of eastern spices.

At first glance, diners may feel overwhelmed at the sheer number of dishes on the menu at Adonis, but this is what makes Lebanese food so special. It’s called ‘Mezze’, an elaborate selection of hot and cold appetisers, which can also be enjoyed as a meal depending on how many you order! Yoghurt, cheese, aubergines, chickpeas, tomatoes, burghul and cucumber are harmoniously blended into numerous assorted medleys. Some of the most popular dishes include Baba Ghannouj – a dip consisting of char grilled aubergine, Falafel – small deep fried patties made of spiced ground chick peas, Tabbouleh – a refreshing salad of tomato, mint, parsley and burghul, and Makanek – mini Lebanese spicy sausages with lemon. There are also delightful little pastries stuffed with cheese, vegetables or meat. Accompany this with authentic flat pita bread, and you will understand why this cuisine is a favourite beyond the borders of Lebanon.

In this era of conscious eating, it’s important to know that Lebanese food is regarded as one of the world’s healthiest cuisines, consisting mainly of fresh vegetarian recipes, salads and stews, all seasoned with a combination of herbs and spices.

The Lebanese are also famous for their desserts. So to accompany a strong, authentic coffee, try the delightful Baklawa, made of layered pastry filled with nuts and smothered in honeylemon syrup.

The décor at Adonis is very modern, warm and tastefully designed. There’s a cosy terrace, and very friendly staff. Go there on a Saturday night, and you will be entertained by a belly dancer!

Overall, the dishes, with their robust, earthy flavours are a pleasurable dining alternative, and a must try for lovers of good food!

If it is your first visit to Adonis, then I recommend the Mezze options, where the dishes are chosen for you and the price depends on the number of people. It starts at seven plates for 18€ per person. But make sure you go there hungry, because you will want to finish every morsel.

Now if your experience of kebabs goes as far as the snack shop, then let Adonis show you what a true Lebanese kebab is. Marinated skewers of chicken and lamb are served with rice and salad. There’s also Charawarma, made of thinly sliced marinated and spiced veal with a sesame sauce. And Samak, consisting of grilled or fried mullet and sea bream.

The wine list offers a good variety of Lebanese wines, beginning at 20€ per bottle. The Blanc Pearl, with its subtle fruity finish, compliments the consistent flavours of lemon and garlic.

There is also a selection of French wines available.

Kililies Café As anyone who has tried a real New York bagel knows, nothing beats this delectable circular sandwich. Finding the perfect bagel shop in Nice has not been an easy task, but alas we have discovered Kililies Café, and it’s mouth watering New York treats.

This American inspired café is the brain child of Christophe Compain and partner Laurie Bénaim, who have both spent a number of years in the U.S. The café is tastefully decked out in black, red and white décor and offers a comfortable, breeze catching terrace.

The “Bagel Store” offers no less than 20 different choices with authentic cream cheese.

There are the classics - smoked salmon, cream cheese and dill; guacamole, smoked chicken and cheddar cheese; and cream cheese, bacon, cheddar and tomato. But there is also a fantastic French twist to others, like the Chicago with cream cheese, jambon cru, sundried tomatoes and feta; the Sacramento – cream cheese, olive tapenade, jambon cru and tomato; and the Tampa Bay - Mayonnaise, prawns, avocado and tomato. Bagels are served with salad and potato wedges, making it more than just a lunchtime snack.

The desserts are hard to pass-by, and again the decision is made difficult with 16 desserts to choose from. Western favourites include the chocolate brownie and carrot cake. There are also Nutella bagels, chocolate donuts and the ever-popular Café Gourmand – with an espresso, a mini brownie, mini apple crumble and a scoop of ice cream. In one word …

“Yum!” Fresh fruit smoothies top off the Kililies experience.

Non-bagel fanatics won’t feel left out – there’s also an impressive list of 12 different salads, all reasonably priced at 9€. And of course it wouldn’t be an American café without burgers, so there are 4 different cheeseburgers to choose from, and sides of onion rings, fried calamari, corn on the cob and potato wedges.

So if you have been longing for that real New York bagel, then you’ll appreciate Kililies Café as much as we did. Fantastic service with a smile, and a menu that is sure to draw you back time and time again!

We all love our weekend brunches, and luckily so does Kililies. For 16€, you get a hot drink, fresh orange juice, eggs, bacon, baked beans, a bagel, sausage, tomato, hash brown, cheese and mushrooms. Residents of Nice will wake up on the morning of July 19th to discover hundreds of low-cost rental bikes at 90 high-tech stations scattered throughout the city. Riding on the success of the Paris and Lyon biking programs, Nice is following suit in an effort to cut traffic, reduce pollution, improve parking and enhance the city’s modern image.

By November 2009, 30 more stations and 300 bicycles will be introduced in the western area, and by April 2010, a further 55 stations and 550 additional bikes will be added in the northeast. Eventually, there will be about one station every 300 meters across the entire city, with a total of 1,750 bicycles.

Head of Urban Community at City Hall, Christian Estrosi, has spearheaded a campaign to reduce transport delays in Nice. The 1€ ticket for public transport throughout the Alpes Maritimes has been used by more than 22 million passengers. Free-access bicycles were next on his list. “We want to encourage environmentally friendly transport; give the city a more dynamic and modern image to tourists by diversifying tourist activities; provide transport in isolated areas and nonpublic transport hours; reduce economic losses linked to hours lost in traffic jams; and promote an active lifestyle.”

NEWS UPDATES: Protest forces City to back down on early terrace closures: On June 10, a group of 200 strong protesters took to the streets in an unprecedented show of discontent at the City’s plans to close terraces at 12.30am, and 1.30am during summer, in Nice’s most touristic areas.

Facing huge economic losses and fearing a mass exodus of tourists to surrounding cities, restaurant & bar owners, staff and customers held banners saying “Nice, the tourism capital of sleep” and “Everyone for unemployment”. While City Hall initially refused to budge, a meeting one-week later resolved the issue, allowing bars & restaurants to keep their terraces open to the public until 2.00am.

Paris’ Vélib’ – a cross between “velo” (bike) and “liberté” (freedom) – has transformed travel in the French capital since it was launched in July 2007. Its sturdy grey bikes have been used 42 million times since then. However it has met with recent controversy, as some 7,800 of the original 15,000 bikes have “disappeared”, presumed stolen. On top of that, vandalism is a major problem. Staff at JCDecaux, the company charged with running the scheme, repair or replace 1,500 bikes a day. Nonetheless, the scheme makes the Paris Town Hall 20 million euros per year, and will invest around 1 million euros into Nice city coffers.

New Internet law setback: France’s highest court, the Conseil Constitutionnel, has ruled that internet access is a human right and only judges should have the power to cut access, not simply an administrative body. The decision is a major blow to the Internet piracy law, passed in May 12, which aims to establish an authority (HADOPI) to oversee a process of warning letters and eventual disconnection for users accused of illegally downloading material such as music and films.

Culture Minister Christine Albanel says she will push ahead with the law however the Hadopi body will be limited to sending out warning messages.

To use the bikes, riders must pay a yearly subscription of 25€, or 15€ for those who already have a Ligne d’Azur subscription. Alternatively, there are monthly passes for 10€, weekly passes for 5€, or daily subscriptions for 1€. In addition, there are rental costs of 1€ for the first hour, then 2€ for every hour after that. The first half hour is free.

H1N1 virus reaches pandemic status: The World Health Organization has upgraded the H1N1 virus outbreak to a Phase 6 pandemic stage, the first pandemic the world has seen in 41 years. The number of official cases reported has increased to 55,867 world wide, with 238 deaths (WHO statistics as of June 24). The H1N1 virus is still considered mild compared to the regular seasonal influenza, and WHO officials hope that by raising the pandemic alert level to its highest phase will prompt drug makers to fast track the vaccine.

The new bicycle scheme inevitably raises concerns over safety.

Therefore the city plans on extending its bicycle lanes from 29kms to 125kms by 2013, and introducing bicycle lanes that run in both directions.

So, come mid-July, it’s time to ditch the traffic and those hours spent sweltering in hot cars, for a healthy, clean-green alternative!

La Trappa Once a meeting place for “Niçoise cuisine” enthusiasts, La Trappa is now famed for it’s tapas, quality cocktails, and smart, sleek atmosphere.

Founded in 1866 and located on one of the best people-watching streets of Nice, it is still easy to miss this popular bar. You may recognize the salsadancing silhouette, but do you know that behind La Trappa’s unassuming exterior lies one of the most impressive cocktail bars in the old town? Introduced to me by a friend as the bar who makes “the best White Russian’s in Nice”, I can honestly say I was suitably impressed. Couple that with a tapas menu – THE best thing to come out of Spain next to sangria – and you have a quality night out.

Tempura prawns; Skewers of chicken marinated in Indian spices and coconut; and Aubergine caviar with a cocoa and honey balsamic. The cuisine extends to bruschettas, mixed plates and battered delights.

La Trappa has undergone a major makeover, but has managed to maintain its rustic heritage with an interior bathed in warm red tones, a dark wooden bar and tables, and a projector showcasing classic old films.

The room is lit primarily with candles, providing a discreet and relaxed ambiance. DJ’s deliver a comfortable mix of pop, R&B and house music that is suitably subtle by evening and lively by night.

Allow yourself to be lured in by the salsa dancing silhouette and enjoy a little bit of Spain in the heart of Nice!

La Trappa has a ‘secret society’ vibe and you get the feeling that the locals would happily keep this bar all to themselves. But this is a venue definitely worth sharing, together with its friendly staff and varied clientele.

So, the White Russian was obviously a hit … prepared with generous servings of quality vodka and kahlua, served over ice and topped with a drizzle of fresh cream. It is a unique touch that is afforded to all the cocktails and reminds you what a real treat they can be. The cocktail list is extensive and generally priced at 9€. There’s also quality wines available by the glass and bottle. I recommend the Sancerre Domaine Durand for 7€ a glass. Spirits are sold by the bottle or glass and there is an impressive list of digestives.

Recipes from the Riviera Main: Duck breasts with raspberry sauce, served with a spinach & feta salad.

Dessert: Berries Brûlée 3 dishes using wonderfully sweet, seasonal fruit and vegetables.

METHOD

Use a sharp knife to score the duck breasts through the skin and fat, being careful not to cut all the way through the meat.

Heat a large, heavy pan on medium-high. Fry the duck breasts skin down until the skin browns and the fat runs out, about 10 minutes. Remove from the pan and pour off most of the fat. Return the breasts to the pan, and fry skin side up for another 10 minutes. Remove and allow to rest.

Mix the salt, cinnamon and sugar together and sprinkle over the skin of the duck breasts. Pour most of the fat out of the frying pan.

Mix together the red wine, cassis and cornstarch in a small bowl. Pour into the pan and simmer for 3 minutes, stirring constantly until the sauce is thickened. Add raspberries and simmer for another minute until heated through.

Place the duck breasts under a grill skin side up until the sugar begins to caramelize, about 1 minute. Slice the duck breasts thinly, pour a little sauce over the top, and serve warm.

INGREDIENTS (Serves 4 people) 4 duck breasts (canard) 2 teaspoons sea salt 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon (canelle) 4 teaspoons sugar ½ cup red wine ¼ cup crème de cassis liqueur 1 teaspoon cornstarch 110g raspberries DRESSING 2-3 lemons 1 tablespoon white vinegar 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil 2-3 sprigs fresh oregano (origan) Sea salt Freshly ground black pepper

SALAD 2-3 bunches fresh spinach 1 medium red onion 1 cucumber 4 slices bacon 1 small block feta

SALAD

Fry the bacon over medium heat until crisp, about 10 minutes.

While the bacon is frying, slice the onion into half-moons.

Peel the cucumber and cut in half lengthwise. Using a spoon, scrap out the seeds. Slice into half-moons.

Measure 4 tablespoons of lemon juice into a small bowl and add the vinegar. Strip the oregano leaves into the bowl, and add salt and pepper to taste. Slowly whisk olive oil into the bowl and set aside.

Once bacon is cooked, set the strips on a double layer of paper towel. Pour out the fat, leaving the brown bits at the bottom of the pan. Add the onion and cook, stirring quickly with a wooden spoon, until the onion gives off its fragrance and has picked up the brown bits. This takes about a minute; you want to char the onion without cooking it down.

To serve, place the spinach into a large bowl, crumble the bacon and, using your hands, gently toss the spinach with the bacon, the halved cucumber and the charred onion.

Cut the feta into small squares and sprinkle on top of the salad. Serve with the lemon vinaigrette on the side.

DESSERT

2 cups fresh berries (blueberries or raspberries), ½ cup sour cream (crème fraiche), ½ cup plain yogurt, 2 tablespoons fine sugar Spoon the berries into a 9-inch pie plate. In a small bowl, combine the crème and yogurt and blend well.

Pour on top of the berries and sprinkle with sugar.

Grill for 1-2 minutes or just until the sugar melts.

Serve immediately.
