Editor’s Welcome
W
elcome to an action-packed month in the French Riviera. Our job here at That’s Nice magazine is to ensure that you make the most of this beautiful region over the next four weeks, and while lazy days on the beach are a must, there are plenty of other things to keep your days and nights busy on Côte! So, we take a trip to St Jean Cap Ferrat, brimming with beautiful beaches, restaurants and picturesque scenery. We also head into the mountains and try our hand at rock climbing and Via Ferrata. If you are not scared of heights, then these adventures are a must! July is full of evening festivals, from jazz concerts to fireworks spectaculars! The Monaco Open Air Cinema is also in full-swing. We’ve got an overview of the best festivals ‘under the stars’ this month, together with event schedules, so keep us close at hand at all times! Do you like our front cover? A big thank you to the veritable mermaid, Sarah Soderston, and Michael Campi for donning weight belts over a number of hours and fighting jellyfish for the shot! I think it ties in nicely with our fashion feature this month, showcasing three great looks for a day at a private beach! Picnicking just got a whole lot more interesting with Chef Tania’s picnic hamper recipes, complete with matching wines. The recipes always use seasonal produce, so be sure to head to your local market to pick up the ingredients. Well, that’s just a sample of what’s inside this month’s edition of That’s Nice. Don’t forget to support our sponsors who make this magazine possible, remembering that we only include businesses we can confidently recommend to our readers! Enjoy the fabulous month of July, happy reading, and see you next month! Cassandra Tanti, Editor

Saint Jean Cap Ferrat Saint Jean Cap Ferrat has long been a magnet for presidents, aristocracy and the rich. It is home to some of the most expensive properties in the world, and also some of the most amazing scenery. It’s turquoise coloured waters, protected beaches and seaside village ambiance make it one of the most stunning and exclusive areas on the French Riviera. With a population of only 2,100, Saint Jean Cap Ferrat is also quite small, so the whole peninsula can be explored within a few hours!
The Port
Once a busy fishing hub, the port of Saint Jean Cap Ferrat now accommodates luxurious yachts and delightful wooden boats. There are a host of cafés and restaurants along the port, all quintessentially “Rivieraesque” with their outdoor terraces. Not surprising, seafood is the specialty here, but you don’t have to spend a fortune. We enjoyed a lovely meal with great service at Le Rafiot. Prices are very reasonable, average 15€, .
beaches
Paloma is a beautiful little bay, housing a public beach and private beach with jetty, restaurant and sun lounges. It is positioned at the base of tall cliffs, so it is protected from winds and offers jaw-dropping views of the Moyenne Corniche, Eze and Beaulieu. Water sports are also available. Paloma Beach will, for the first time, host apéro evenings in July and August. From 6pm, guests can enjoy cocktails and champagne in the lounge area, with nibbles and music. There is also Passable beach on the northwest side of the main peninsula, past the Tourism Office, and Cro de Peï Pin, which is the largest beach, located just north of the port at the Anse Lilong.
Grand Hôtel du Cap
At the tip of Cap Ferrat is the Grand Hôtel du Cap, considered one of the most glamorous hotels in the world. It was built in 1908 and is set amidst a beautiful garden. Guests here have included George W. Bush and Bill Clinton.
Walks
There is an easy, picturesque walk around the peninsula. In the right season, you can even see whales and dolphins in this protected marine sanctuary. The walk takes about thirty minutes and winds around the coast, before coming out at Paloma Beach. To access the walk, head west of the port and follow the signs. Saint Jean Cap Ferrat has some of the most expensive real estate in the world. Luxurious properties are nestled amongst lush vegetation, protected from prying eyes. But it is still worth a wander through the village to catch a glimpse of these 10 million euro villas (60 million if they are on the water’s edge). In fact, the most expensive property in the world was sold here in July 2008 - Villa Leopolda – brought by a Russian billionaire for 500 million euros!
Villa Île de France
In 1905, Béatrice Ephrussi de Rothschild built a Tuscan style palace, now known as Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild museum. A member of the prominent Rothschild banking family and wife of the wealthy Russian-Jewish banker Baron de Ephrussi, Béatrice de Rothschild built her rose-coloured mansion and filled it with antique furniture, Old Master paintings, sculptures, and an extensive collection of rare porcelain. She also created her own private zoo (no longer in existence) with exotic birds and animals including flamingos, monkeys, antelopes and gazelles. There are seven established gardens of different themes, and the whole area was designed like a ship, to be viewed from the loggia of the house – like the bridge of a vessel – with the sea visible on all sides. The garden was inspired by a voyage Béatrice made on the liner ‘Île de France’, and the thirty gardeners hired to maintain the garden were all dressed as sailors with berets and red pom poms! Every August the villa hosts Les Azuriales Opera Festival. It is now a museum and open to the public. Saint Jean Cap Ferrat is the apex of the Riviera’s “Golden Triangle”, which also includes Beaulieu and Villefranche. It can be accessed by bus (from the main bus station in Nice) and by car along the Basse or Moyenne Corniche.

ClimbingtheRiviera The French Riviera is blessed with a spectacular mountain range that offers a plethora of established climbing routes. Sheer cliff faces - perched hundreds of metres above medieval villages, canyons and coastlines – offer climbers a heavenly experience and an unparalleled sense of achievement. Despite common perception, climbing is not reserved for the fit and fearless. It is, in fact, a sport that can be enjoyed by almost everyone. Here, we look at two different ways to climb the French Riviera, using top-roping and Via Ferrata.
Top-Roping
I tried my first rock climb at La Turbie – one of the largest and most visible mountain ranges on the Côte. The vantage point is breathtaking – sweeping views of Monaco and Italy to the left, Nice through to St Tropez on the right. All of this just thirty minutes drive from the heart of Nice. After choosing a ‘beginner’s’ climbing route (one of 35 possibilities), our guides, Jérôme and Dean, take us through the necessities. Top-roping is regarded as the safest form of climbing. A rope is run through an established anchor at the summit; one end is attached to the climber and the other to the belayer at the base, who keeps the rope taut during the climb and prevents falls. As you climb, the belayer adjusts the rope accordingly so it is always tight and supportive. Trust is crucial to an enjoyable and successful climb – you must believe that your belayer supports you and leave yourself free to explore the cliff face. So with that, you begin climbing, searching for centimetre-wide gaps to place your feet and fingers, edging closer and closer to that alluring summit. Remarkably, crevices that barely appear able to accommodate a centipede are perfectly capable of keeping you suspended on the rock, just long enough for you to find the next, illusive crevice. There are times when you think it is impossible to continue, but gentle coaching and a determination not to give up wills you ahead. If you tire along the way, you can always relax back into your harness, hang for a little while and admire the view! But when you finally do make it to the top, the sense of achievement is overwhelming. The serenity of your surroundings finally kicks in, and the birds eye view of valleys, townships and coastline below afford you a new perception of the French Riviera. Abseiling back down the cliff is pretty fun too. Rock climbing is indeed a physically and mentally demanding sport – it tests your strength, endurance, agility and balance, as well as your mental control. But you don’t have to be Spiderman to do it. However, if rock climbing sounds too challenging, then you have a fantastic alternative – Via Ferrata!
Via Ferrata
Via Ferrata is a European mountain sport in which people climb vertical rock faces using fixed cables, ladders and bridges. Basically, it is rock climbing with training wheels, but it affords the same sense of achievement and exhilaration. The Via Ferrata technique, which was developed during World War I to move troops quickly through the Dolomites in Northern Italy, allows climbers with little instruction or climbing skill to safely ascend sheer cliff faces. It joins together isolated ranges, creating a long and accessible climbing route. One such course sits above the 11th Century village of Peille, about thirty minute’s drive from Nice. Climbers are checked in at the local Absinthe Bar and are given the necessary equipment, which includes a harness and safety helmet. Then, over approximately three to four hours, they are guided through a maze of gulleys, over mountains and across ‘monkey’ bridges. It’s an Indiana Jones adventure, only with the safety of a harness. Along the way, there is plenty of time to rest, take photographs and enjoy the moment. The highlight of this Via Ferrata is the zip line and zip rope (one steel cable to stand on, one to hold), suspended over one hundred metres high. The flying fox is not a necessary part of the course, so the less adventurous can choose an easier crossing option. There are also three escape routes throughout the course if necessary. Via Ferrata is a wildly popular sport. It is an exhilarating ride from beginning to end, and it’s accessible to people of all ages. There are about half a dozen Via Ferrata’s dotted throughout the Alpes Maritimes. If you like the safety and experience of a guide, then Riviera Adventures runs rock-climbing and Via Ferrata trips regularly. A full day, including transport, lunch and activity, costs 55€. Don’t forget to pack sturdy trainers, water and a long-sleeve top to protect you from the wind. Now, it’s time to chalk-up, clip on, and climb that mountain! Cassandra Tanti

A Month Under the Stars The magical month of July...
The Nice Jazz Festival will, for the final time, take it’s stage at Cimiez this July. After four decades in the historic setting, the city’s premier music festival will move to the heart of Nice, in the Albert 1er and Place Massena gardens, in July 2011. This is an historic year for the festival and, given the line-up, it will be surely one to remember. On the back of falling attendances, the city’s major, Christian Estrosi, has decided to reduce ticket prices and double the people capacity from 5,000 places in Cimiez to over 9,500 in the two gardens in Nice. According to the city’s local newspaper, Nice Matin, the square will be surrounded by a “cultural and artistic” village. Once the bus station has been demolished, this will be another possible venue for the concerts. The first ever Nice Jazz Festival was held in the city’s Opera House in 1948. Despite an incredible lineup that included headlining act Louis Armstrong, it would be another twenty-three years before the Jazz Festival would make it’s second show, this time at the Théâtre de Verdure. The festival has since featured the likes of Lionel Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Charles, Ella Fitzgerald and Miles Davies. It has dabbled in different musical genres over the years, including pop and world music, with performances by Kanye West and the disco beats of Chic. However, the roots of the festival remain firmly in jazz, with many artists from alternate genres incorporating an element of jazz into their style. As with all great festivals, the audience is free to wander freely around the historic Cimiez arenas and garden, switching between three different stages which feature up to six different artists each evening. The setting is made all the more festive with food and beverage stands, offering traditional delights such as socca and Côte de Provence rosé. How to get there: Bus no. 17 – to the ‘les Arénes’ stop Bus no. 15 – to the ‘Cimiez’ Stop

jazz at juan schedule
Juan les Pins is this year celebrating it’s 50th anniversary, making it the longest running jazz festival in Europe, according to organisers. Jazz at Juan is a veritable melting pot of styles and trends, mixing classic jazz with popular music and off-beat new music. This year, however, in tribute to the 50th anniversary, Jazz at Juan returns to its roots with a resolutely jazz program, featuring artists “in their prime”, some who even graced the stage all those decades ago, like George Benson. Featured by the seaside stage are ceramic tiles laid into the pavement with handprints of more than 50 jazz musicians who have played at the festival, among them B.B. King, Fats Waller, George Benson and Little Richard.

Food Guide
& Reviews
La Maison de Marie La Maison de Marie, with it’s fairytale-like surroundings and typical Niçois menu, is undoubtedly a hit with locals and visitors alike – it is near impossible to get a table here without a reservation. The cuisine is robust, traditional and uncomplicated. Service is friendly and fast. And the courtyard, with it’s overhanging garden, makes for a very romantic summer evening.
5 rue Massena, Nice
The menu at La Maison de Marie is quite large and covers the classics pasta, meat and fish. The portions are very large, and there is a traditional simplicity to the dishes: mixed grilled seafood, linguini and penne, beef and lamb stews, to name but a few. I tried the evening menu for 21€, opting for
the lamb and olive terrine – a nice starter which is large enough to share. My main dish of stuffed rabbit tasted and looked far too much like my terrine entrée (either a mistake on my part, or that of the chef) and contained too little rabbit. Perhaps the fish would have been a better choice. The veal wrapped in ratatouille (21€) and encased in stomach lining could have definitely done without the latter. Or, at the very least, it should have been mentioned on the menu that the dish contained offal. There is a strong Corsican influence here, in both food and wine. There are also bottles from the Bourgogne, Bordeaux and Côte du Rhône regions, making for a very nice selection. Finally, my fresh fruit salad was lacking on the fresh side, but the dessert menu looks tempting: Corsican cheeses, banana and chocolate tiramisu, and nougat praline with raspberries. All in all, I can see why French people or those visiting France would enjoy the time-honored nature of this menu. And it is clearly a favourite among many. Editor’s Note: Our restaurant reviews are not paid for. The restaurants do not know they are being reviewed so we can give an honest assessment without bias. I hope you enjoy my recommendations as much as I enjoy discovering them! Cassandra Tanti
Les Jardins du Capitole
52 Promenade des Anglais, Nice rue Dalpozzo, Nice If you are looking for a meal along the3world famous Promenade des Anglais, with views of the inviting Mediterranean waters and a refreshing sea breeze, then Les Jardins du Capitole is the place to go. And, despite its location, this is not your typical “slap it together for the tourists” kind of restaurant.
There is quite an extensive menu here, so order a drink upon seating and be prepared to spend a good fifteen minutes pouring over the dishes on offer. The cuisine is very traditional, with entrees of snails, foie gras, terrine and stuffed mussels; grilled fish, steak and lamb for mains; pizzas and pastas thrown in for good measure. I can’t imagine anyone coming here and not finding something to their liking. It’s hard to pass up a salad on these hot summer days, and Jardin du Capitole offers an impressive eleven options, ranging from 11€ to 14.50€. For lunch, you can’t go past the 14€ menu, with an entrée and main, or main and dessert. The Salade Gourmande, which features on the specials board and is part of the lunch menu, is a delicious combination of surimi (shredded crab sticks), prawns, mortadella, baby mozzarella, mango, parma ham and marinated vegetables. Each ingredient is presented separately on the plate, making it more of a tapas delight than a run-of-the-mill salad. The specials board tends to sway from the traditional, with dishes like Tunisian salad and sesame salmon. The plat du jours are a popular choice, and priced between 12€ and 14€. If you like set menu’s then you’ll be dazzled at the sheer number of choices here as well. For 25€, you can choose between ten different entrées, thirteen mains and six desserts! I am always sceptical of large menus, but Jardin du Capitole appears to pull it off nicely. Now, I’m three dishes down, only fifty-eight to go!

Zen
My hunt for good Asian food has led me to Zen, one of the most attractive and authentic looking Japanese restaurants in Nice. It also serves out healthy portions of that delicious delicacy – sashimi and they offer a fantastic value-for-money lunch menu. If you’re feeling a little stressed, you can even take time-out in their authentic Japanese garden for a real Zen experience. Quite uniquely, this restaurant offers a variety of ambiances. There’s a small terrace at the front fit for sun filled lunches, and a front of house which hosts an impressive number of Teppanyaki tables, from which plenty an egg roll has been thrown, I am sure. Smack bang in the middle is a little Japanese oasis, complete with Zen garden. And beyond that, another impressive room filled with even more Teppanyaki tables, this time surrounded by low chairs for that authentic Japanese dining experience. Even the toilets are decorated with class. Zen considers itself the largest Japanese restaurant in the French Riviera, and its probably right. The service is timid, almost shy, but I think that has more to do with the language barrier than rudeness. And the food is delicious. I tried the 11.50€ lunch box, which came with soup or salad, sushi, sashimi, nori rolls, grilled salmon, rice and sautéed vegetables. It was, quite simply, delectable. Similarly, my lunch guest’s plate of fried ravioli’s and salmon sashimi looked as good as it tasted. If raw fish isn’t your thing, there is also a 9.50€ lunch box, offering teriyaki chicken, pork or beef, together with soup or salad, rice and vegetables. The servings are large considering the prices – the plate of Teriyaki duck breast is plentiful for just 15€.

So, as the restaurant’s flyer says ‘Japanese cuisine is more than just raw fish’! Even if you don’t enjoy sashimi, there are plenty of dishes on this menu that I’m sure will impress. Personally, I’m planning my next Teppanyaki dinner with friends overlooking that gorgeous Zen garden!

Lifestyle & Health Anxiety doubles the risk of heart attacks Men diagnosed with anxiety in their early years are more than twice as likely to have heart disease or a heart attack later in life, according to a new groundbreaking Swedish study. If there were ever a reason to reduce the amount of stress in your life, then surely this is it. The study included 50,000 Swedish men who were undergoing medical examinations for military service and were followed for an average of 37 years. Dr Imre Janszky, of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, found that those with anxiety disorders – as diagnosed by a psychiatrist – had more than double the risk of heart disease and two-and-a-half times the risk of suffering a heart attack. The results are significant to say the least. It supports an earlier study by Dr Annelieke Roest, from Tilburg University in the Netherlands, which also found that people with anxiety have a fifty percent higher risk of cardiac death. Remarkably, as many as 28 percent of people are diagnosed with anxiety at some point in their lives, according to psychiatrist Dr Joel Dimsdale from the University of California. But anxiety is more than just feeling stressed out. People with anxiety disorders feel excessive or irrational worry and can have anxiety-related physical symptoms such as trembling, nausea, headaches and sweating. Anxiety is a problem when it affects your everyday life. But, as this research shows, it is the long-term impact we must start preparing for. So, what can you do to reduce anxiety? 1. Learn to manage stress in your life. Set deadlines and take “time-out”. 2. Learn a variety of relaxation techniques, especially meditation. 3. Eat healthily and exercise regularly. 4. Learn to replace negative self-talk with positive, coping self-talk. For example, changing the thought “I can’t do this, it is just too hard”, to “This is hard but I can get through it.” Cutting back on alcohol, caffeine and cigarettes is also necessary. Speaking to a counsellor or physician is advisable.
“I’ll Have A Cocoa Channel Tan Please” It is summer in the Riviera, and we all know what that means: a golden Riviera tan! Interestingly enough, it is a French woman who is credited with starting the tan craze. Cocoa Channel inadvertently got a tan while cruising from Paris to Cannes in 1923, setting a worldwide fashion trend. It was an era that coined the phrase “a healthy tan”, which is now considered to be a contradiction in terms. Malignant Melanoma is one of the fastest growing cancers, with an incredible one million new cases diagnosed each year. So if you’re not looking to become a statistic, but are still in need of that “sun-kissed” look this summer, then here’s a few things to remember: While many people believe that a tan makes us appear healthier, it is actually a sign that the skin has been damaged. It’s similar to the beginning stages of a burn. So like everything in life, moderation is the key. It is a myth that sunburn will fade into a tan. A sunburn is actually a bunch of broken blood vessels that form on top of a tan. Sunburn earlier in life can lead to skin cancer later in life. Most dermatologists recommend using a sunscreen with a SPF of at least 15, however people with pale complexions should use a SPF of 30. Take extra care while tanning between the hours of 10am and 3pm, when UV rays are peaking. It is best to apply sunscreen 30 minutes before you go into the sun, to give it enough time to absorb into your skin. Reapply 15-30 minutes after sun exposure begins, then reapply after swimming or sweating. There are two types of UV Rays: UVA and UVB. Both are bad, so make sure your tanning products specify that they guard against both. Many medications contain chemicals that increase your sensitivity to sunlight. For example, antibiotics, antihistamines, oral contraceptives, tricyclic antidepressants and most acne medications will cause your skin to burn rather than tan. If you are taking these medications, use a higher SPF sunscreen. And the most important thing to remember - you still tan when wearing sunscreen! All creams allow a certain amount of UV to penetrate the skin.
New Anti-Rape Condom Trial at World Cup Around 30,000 anti-rape condoms were distributed throughout South Africa during the FIFA World Cup in a world first trial. Critics say the female condoms are a medieval form of enslavement, but could the device actually make it onto the European market? South African doctor Sonnet Ehlers, who vowed to help rape victims after hearing one girl’s story forty years ago, invented the device, called Rape-Axe. “She looked at me and said, ‘If only I had teeth down there,” recalls Ehlers. Rape-Axe looks like a condom, and is inserted into a woman just like a tampon. Inside the condom are razor-sharp bars that hook into a man’s penis during penetration. If he tries to remove it, it clasps even tighter. Only a doctor can perform the removal, a procedure Dr Ehlers hopes will allow authorities to easily make arrests. A report last year by South Africa’s Medical Research Council found that 28 percent of men surveyed had raped a woman or girl, with one in 20 saying they had raped in the last year. Critics say Rape-Axe is a medieval device that can anger the rapist and lead to even more violence towards the victim. Ehlers says the device will bide time for the victim to get away, and it is a “medieval device for a medieval deed”.
14
After the trial period, the condoms with will be available in South Africa at a small cost.

It will also examine hypothesis related to the artist’s religious identity.

Yes, summer’s here! That means dolce farniente, ambre solaire, pedalos, long warm nights, a glass (or two) of rosé, and relaxing with (yes, you’ve got it) a good book! A good summer book is one that reads easily, pages flying by. So here are a couple of suggestions for a top summer read. … Linda The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner by Stephanie Meyer If you’re into vampires and Stephenie Meyer, the good news is that her latest book, The Short Life of Bree Tanner, is out! Bree was introduced to us in Eclipse, and here she is again on the darker side of the newborn vampire world she inhabits. Another long-awaited book is the new Sookie Stackhouse novel, Dead in the Family. Like Stephenie Meyer, start with Charlaine Harris and you’re hooked … on blood. The Enemy by Charlie Higson Children are not left out in this summer read fest. After Charlie Higson’s successful Young Bond series, there is now a teenage Sherlock Holmes battling against sinister villains, where everyone over the age of 14 is infected by a sickness and children are left to save the world! Meanwhile, Meg Cabot continues the adventures of a teen supermodel in Airhead: Being Nikki; Alex Rider is back in Crocodile Tears; and July sees the new Artemis Fowl and the Atlantis Complex – not to be missed.
Millenium Series by Stieg Larsson If you haven’t tried Stieg Larsson’s Millenium series, it’s a must. Iconoclastic and peppery Lisbeth Salander is the most addictive, original heroine in literature for many a year, and all three books come into the un-put-downable category. Meanwhile, Grisham’s angling for a new readership with his thirteen-year-old lawyer who knows too much; there’s James Patterson with detective Alex Cross; Terry Pratchett’s Unseen Academicals has wizards playing football (yes, even them) and just to complicate the matter they have to win without the use of; Patricia Cornwell’s Scarpetta Factor; and a collection of stories about love, loss, revelation and reconciliation from the bestselling Maeve Binchy.

ixar produced its first feature-length film, Toy Story, in 1995. It won an Academy Award and was nominated for three others, setting a benchmark in animation, to which other film companies have since aspired. The success of the film led Pixar to release a sequel in 1999. But before that, A Bug’s Life was released in 1998. Monsters, Inc. was the next project in 2001, and Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Cars, Ratatouille, WALL-E and Up have all followed suit. Each film has garnered critical acclaim for the

Picnicking just got a whole lot more interesting! Head to the market and gather your fresh, seasonal produce, and prepare these delicious dishes at your home or holiday apartment. Then, grab a hamper and a bottle of our recommended wines, head outdoors, and enjoy the sunshine!

Drizzle the aubergine slices with olive oil, season with salt and pepper and sprinkle with garlic. Roast in a moderate oven for about 15-20 minutes, or until tender. Set aside to cool. In a bowl, whisk the eggs and add the crème fraiche and parsley. Line a round quiche dish with pastry, fill with the aubergine and crumble the blue cheese on the top. Pour over the egg mixture and bake in a pre-heated oven at 190°C for about 20-30 minutes, or until the tart is set.

Cut the figs into quarters and assemble on a plate with the mozzarella, basil and parma ham. Drizzle with the dressing and serve! Porquerolles rouge 2007 – 19€ Wines from the Porquerolles Island derive their flavour, experts say, from the quality of the soil, the location of the island and the mix of grapes, in this case Grenache and Syrah. This is a completely organic wine, full of red fruit and earthy flavours.
Curry Potato Salad 1 kilo salad potatoes 1 bunch spring onions 1 tbs vegetable oil 1 tsp mustard seeds, plus extra to serve 1 tbs Madras curry paste 200g low-fat natural yoghurt 4 tbs mayonnaise 4 sticks celery, thickly sliced 1 tsp oriander seeds, crushed 1 tsp peppercorns, crushed 1 tsp cumin seeds
26
Cut the potatoes in half or quarters, depending on size, keeping the skin on. Boil in a large pan of salty water until just tender. Rinse and set aside. Chop the white ends of the spring onions, reserving the green parts for garnish. Heat the cumin, mustard, coriander seeds and peppercorns in a hot pan until they start to pop. Add the oil, curry paste, onions and garlic and fry on a medium to low heat for about 2 minutes. In a large bowl, mix together the spices, mayonnaise and yoghurt. Add the potatoes and celery and coat. Garnish with the chopped greens of the spring onions and serve!
Peach & Toffee Muffins 4 ripe peaches, cut into small chunks 300g plain flour 3 tsp baking powder (levure chimique) 2 tsp ground cinnamon 80g castor sugar (sucre fine) 250ml milk 2 eggs, beaten 100g butter, melted 100g soft toffee, cut into small chunks 25g flaked almonds Salt Pre-heat the oven to 200°C. Line a muffin tin with paper cases. In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, a pinch of salt and sugar. In a separate bowl, mix together the milk, eggs and melted butter. Pour into the dry ingredients and add the peaches and 2/3 of the toffee. It is important not to over-stir the mixture, just until it starts to combine. The batter should still be quite lumpy. Divide the mixture evenly between the cases, sprinkle with some more toffee and flaked almonds. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the muffins have risen and are firm to touch. Remove and let cool.

HOROSCOPES ARIES
LIBRA
Jupiter reminds you that you can now become the most successful star of the show. So, prove you have the power to take control of your destiny. Say to yourself, ‘I challenge my life’. Love it, yes, but challenge it too. This month, you are evolving. You’re changing because that is the nature of life. It’s only when we resist change that we become tangled in bad relationships. But right now, you’re evolving nicely. Time to go with the flow of this potent energy.
July 2010
You’ve got deadlines, red lines and the odd wrinkle from burning candles. You’ve got on top of the workload, defined your role, set up a structure that works, and now you’re feeling quite pleased with yourself. You are seeing new openings, discovering new ideas, changing your thinking and getting ready to stir up the status quo. And you’re loving it. Think back to a few months ago. Didn’t the thought of giving up something you loved bring a wince to your face? Now you can only smile and say, ‘I was right to stop there.’ Enjoy the decision-maker in you.
TAURUS You’ll have more in the kitty than you thought by the 25th. But until then, you may find it hard to keep a watchful eye on the in and outgoings. The problem with money is that it does seem to have a mysterious life of its own - it magically fills your wallet and then by suppertime it’s gone. This month, keep your eye on its very elusive behaviour and you my actually gain more than you imagined.
SCORPIO With Jupiter’s larger than life influence, you’re going to be blessed with dashing new characters if single, and if attached, inflated reactions between you and your partner. With breathtaking honesty you begin to let others know that you may well dramatise life, but you are one hundred per cent Scorpio. For all the fire and brimstone, this month your inner vulnerability will also be unfurled by true love. Whether single or attached, commit yourself to your own needs. And
GEMINI Getting serious about love is fine if you know what you’re getting serious for. Is it to make a commitment? Is it to dump emotional baggage, take on new stuff, or simply to make a decision about where you go from here? This month, take a more light-hearted view of love to restore the joy there once was and may well be missing now. You will also see that making choices and decisions doesn’t negate the possibility that you can change your mind later. Time to play.
SAGITTARIUS You’re almost divine. You’re a fire sign, you’re special. But instead of thinking that your partner or admirer is an extension of you, recognise that they are individuals in their own right. Instead of thinking you know what’s best for them, give them credit for knowing what they want. You are generous and loving and loyal, but don’t rob your partner’s right to be themselves. Trust works both ways, so trust in that, and then you won’t feel you need to own someone, just love them.
CANCER Wheels turn. Cogs move. You’re certain of your direction, yet there seem to be frustrations around every corner. You’re discovering that life is a never-ending circuit of stops and goes. When the red lights change to green it’s all fabulous and you feel glad to be you; when the green lights turn to amber, you start wondering if you’re in the right business. But thankfully, the cosmos gives you every reason to jump on the bandwagon. Time to cross the lights and head for the open road.
CAPRICORN You know exactly where you’re going and why. In fact you’ve pretty much convinced yourself of fame and fortune in the months to come. You see holes in arguments, spot opportunities where least expected and can plan a lifestyle where your creative juices will come to the fore. Inner confidence creates not only outer allies or support, but the kind of audience you’ve always longed for: people who applaud you for being you. So don’t give up on those dazzling qualities.
LEO What is your current goal? Are you being entirely honest with yourself about that aim? As long as you’re truly sure this is the right direction for you, then go for it. If there’s even a seed of doubt, stop it from developing into a tree full of sour fruit. Whether you give up what you’re doing and change your life completely, or are determined to make this your month for unparalleled success, the cosmos is in your favour. Do one for yourself too.
AQUARIUS Friends seem to be abroad, or just distant, but why? Was it something you said, did or didn’t do? Don’t take it personally. In your chart is a widening gap between your personal development and theirs. You’re looking within, they’re looking without. Right now, the planets are reminding you that your vision is better than their blindness.
VIRGO Whether single or attached, you just feel a tad neglected. So, time to admire yourself. Glance at the real you and acknowledge your weaknesses, but most of all love your strengths. This
PISCES The cosmos hasn’t given you much to shout and dance about, financially that is. But it’s a blessing in disguise. Maybe you’re actually getting a little more radical about the world of finances? Could you be about to spend only cash? It’s time to cut up the credit cards and crop the unnecessary. If you rebel against the institutions of personal finance, it will lead you to greater things.
will give you reason to both love and admire simultaneously. If you admire yourself then hey presto, you can love yourself too. Love is flowing back into your life this month, but you have to flow with it.
