Sacred Music Festival ends

Fête de la Musique June 21st is one of the biggest events of the year, and for good reason.

Not even New Year’s Eve generates the kind of crowds that gather for this festival. Musicians of every genre perform concerts throughout the city, mimicking scenes across the country and Europe. It is the only time of the year when musicians can freely take to open-air areas such as streets, parks, museums, train stations, and even hospitals and prisons! There is just one requirement … that everything is free!

Concerts are held at all major squares and parks in Nice. To catch some of your favourite performers, head to rue de la Prefecture opposite King’s and Wayne’s bars for 6 top bands performing on an open air stage! Concert kicks off around 6pm.

Other Events in June

International Triathlon The splendid coastline of Nice is the backdrop for this gruelling triathlon, which attracts more than 2,700 athletes. Held on the 28th June, the International Triathlon is considered the most important Iron-man championship in Europe. It includes a 3.8km swim, 180km bicycle race and a 42 km run!

Sacred Music Festival Between the 13th and 28th June, the narrow streets of Vieux Nice fill with the sound of music during the annual Sacred Music Festival (Festival de Musique Sacrée). There are over a dozen events to see, ranging from large-scale symphony performances to smaller choral and chamber concerts. Each concert takes place in a different church in Nice.

Nice Book Fair – Over 300 French & international authors gather for debates, workshops, book signings and live music concerts in the Albert 1 garden on the 12th-14th June.

Salon Bionazur – A conference covering all things organic, including how to overcome cancer & obesity, development of organic agriculture, impact of & alternative to pesticides, GMO’s and Feng Shui. It includes food; beauty, health & hygiene; footwear; crystals; minerals; jewellery; garden tools; textiles & clothing.

Summer Shopping Sales – Everyone loves a sale! And you should be able to catch some great bargains at the end of June for about 5 weeks until August.

Fête la Renaissance – For medieval frolics – literally – join a crowd of dressed up jousters at Villeneuve Loubet for a truly unique experience. The festival is held between the 13th – 14th June.

Fête de Saint Pierre et de la Mer – This annual ceremony commemorates the medieval legend of local fisherman, saved from the brink of a fierce storm by monk’s prayers. It takes place on June 29th at Nice Port.

A day in NICE Take a deep breath

As lovely as the rich blue-green sea of Nice is above the water, beneath the waves lies a treasure trove just waiting to be explored.

Snorkelling and diving are ideal ways to see the Mediterranean from a new perspective, gain an appreciation of its wild side, and above all have fun! Head below the surface and discover colourful sea creatures, mysterious sunken ships and long-forgotten wrecks.

If you have snorkelled or dived in other parts of the world, then you will be pleasantly surprised at how inexpensive and easy it is here. Choosing whether to snorkel or dive depends on your health and fitness level. Snorkelling requires little more than the equipment and a relaxed attitude, while potential divers should consider health aspects such as asthma, blood pressure, ear and lung problems.

SNORKELLING Experience the thrill of floating freely while exploring life below the surface at Villefranche Bay and Cap D’Ail, with its calm waters and soft currents. This area is perfect for snorkelling, as the rocky outcroppings attract

fish, block currents and is generally avoided by boaters. Here, you swim in 3-5 meter deep water sticking close to the coast, as this is where you will find most of the marine life.

Deeper water equates to less visibility. The Mediterranean Sea is warm and temperate, neither reaching very high or very low temperatures. It is too cold for reef forming corals and too warm for many of the marine animals of Northern Europe. It therefore has its own flora and fauna. You can expect to see thousands of fish of all varieties and sizes, the odd octopus and starfish. Take the time to hover over rocky pools as many fish are camouflaged and can only be seen on careful observation. It is easy to loose track of distance and location in this new and exciting world, so don’t forget to look up for your exit spot or boat every couple of minutes. And always snorkel with a friend.

Avoid touching the marine life, especially sea urchins – the spines are sharp and slightly toxic. Villefranche Bay can only be accessed

by boat and a half day snorkelling trip costs as little as 16€! Cap D’Ail beach can be easily accessed by foot. Similarly, try snorkelling at any beach that has rocky outcroppings. Snorkelling requires a diving mask, snorkel and swim fins to propel you through the water and can be purchased or rented at most activity stores for a minimal fee.

DIVING Nice has around 30 dive sites on a section of coast that starts at “Cap de Nice” and ends at Menton. There are sites to suit all levels of experience, with highlights including the Coral Cave, The Airplane, The Gorgonian Valley and the Underwater Cliffs. Novice divers can enjoy an easy “discover scuba” dive of around 6 meters.

Cap de Nice offers several dives for all levels, with a large reef at a depth of 15 meters and is home to a statue of the Virgin Mary. The statue has been used as the site for a number of underwater weddings and was put there at the instruction of the mayor in 1968.

Villfranche Bay West is home to the Coral Cave and can be explored safely by everyone (with a torch). Villefranche Bay East is a shallow reef ideal for novice divers. A highlight among the plethora of sea life is a wreck of a plane. This, however, is reserved for experienced divers.

St Jean Cap Ferrat is home to the Underwater Cliffs, which is covered with gorgonians - rich blue in colour that turn to red when illuminated by light.

De lem du mer, La Sirene and La Vierge, at Bolouris is a fantastic dive with 2 underwater statues, an arch, a vast array of fish and a wreck near by.

WRECK DIVING This in only to be attempted by experienced, certified divers. But if you fit that bill, then you are going to love what’s on offer! Two of the most popular wreck dives include The Togo, which lies in 56 meters of water. It is a cargo ship that went down in WW1 and split in two upon sinking. The Espingole in Cavalaire Bay is a torpedo boat lying in a relatively easy depth of 38 meters. The boat ran aground in 1903.

Novice divers should not schedule a dive within 12-24 hours of a flight.

Winery tour les Arcs sur Argens Côte De Provençe wines can be found on every restaurant and dinner table in the Riviera. So what is the story behind this world-famous region and how can you experience it at it’s best?

Well, the Côte De Provençe stretches from Marseille to Saint-Raphael, and many hours can be spent driving around the different wineries. But if you are looking to cover 3 of the best in one place, then we recommend a visit to Les Arcs sur Argens!

THE REGION:

Côte De Provençe is the oldest wine growing area in France. Remarkably, wine has been produced in this region for over 2,600 years! Rosé makes up the majority of wine produced at 80%, with 20% harvested for reds and 5% for whites. The fresh and fruity rosés are a perfect summer wine and are considered “ambassadors of Provence”!

Be sure to set aside a few hours to fully appreciate Château Saint Roseline. But be warned, you’ll probably walk away with more bottles of wine than you can carry!

award winning wines. The estate also offers an elaborate equestrian facility and stables filled with magnificent Portuguese horses, as well as 5 hectares of olive trees and gastronomic olive oils. The site sits upon highly acidic volcanic soils and clay limestone from the Alps, delivering an outstanding mixture of grape varieties. Their reds are remarkable and quite unique for this region. Font do Broc is a young estate, however owner Sylvain Massa has gone to great lengths to recreate an early gothic aesthetic, going so far as digging a 20 meter deep hole in which he reproduced the chapter house of the Cistercian Abbey of Thoronet, complete with sculpted pillars and vaults. Concerts are often held at the estate in the summer, and they will be hosting an orchestral evening on July 9th with music by Vivaldi, Zipoli and Puccini. Château Sainte Pierre has a long and interesting history dating back to the 11th century. Recent restoration work on the cellar has revealed vestiges of the church of Saint Pierre that once belonged to Foulques, the Lord of Les Arcs. Among the top picks is the Cuvée Baptiste red, with grapes from the Château’s oldest variety, matured in oak barrels, then aged in the cellars for 2 years (16€). There’s also their “Tradition” selection, which is typically Provençal. The white offers wonderfully intense floral aromas, the rosé is very fruity and the red is subtle and easy to drink (6€). Château Saint Pierre is open every day from 9am to midday, and 2pm to 6pm, except on Sundays and bank holidays.

Font du Broc is another large vineyard with

from the 11th century and has been transformed into a beautiful residence and winery, with sprawling parks laid out in typical French style. But this is far from your typical winery. At the centre of the estate is a 12th century chapel containing the preserved body of Saint Roseline herself! As the story goes, Roseline was Priestess of the monastery in 1300 performing a number of miracles, and died in 1329. Five years later she was exhumed and her body was found to be completely intact, her eyes open and as clear as the day she died.

Her body was embalmed only in 1894 and is surprisingly very well preserved. Today, she lies in a glass shrine and has been the centre of pilgrimage for over six centuries. The Chapel is also filled with beautiful religious art, including a mosaic by March Chagall, choir desk by Diego Giacometti and stained glass windows by Jean Bazaine.

The wines produced at the vineyard, first founded

by Pope Jean XXII in the 14th century, are just as majestic as the site itself. The Château is one of the 18 “cru classé” of the Provençe (a high ranking classification) and is very demanding when it comes to wine making, with manual sorting of the grapes and three-level processing by gravity. This

is one of few wineries in the Provençe that will happily take you on a tour of their state-of-the-art wine making facility, as well as a guided tour of the chapel, ending with tastings of their popular whites, rosés and reds. Our favourites included the Cuvée Lampe De Meduse white (13€), the Cuvée Prieure red (19€ with a 15 year cellar life) and the Cuvée Lampe De Meduse rosé (12€).

Restaurant Reviews taste is nothing short of delightful. We opt for the fruity Terre des Chardons red, priced at 18€.

Also suggested are the Château St Anne with its strong, leathery flavours (30€) and a 2006 Beaujolais Morgan, delicately produced using old grapes (32€). We are pleased that our subtle, fruity wine was indeed the perfect choice.

Le Bistro du Fromager Dining at Le Bistro du Fromager is about more than just food … it is the experience. Journey in to the decadent world of cheese and wine, where the only hard part of the evening is deciding which delicious concoction to choose!

Le Bistro du Fromager is a long established restaurant in the Old Town of Nice, and has been recently taken over by brothers Gregoire and Hugo Loubert.

Their passion for quality cheese is surpassed only by their love of bioorganic wines. It is a philosophy that works perfectly with the heritage, rustic layout of the restaurant; it’s cave of dimly lit alcoves filled with old, dusty wine bottles and an ancient drinkingwell centrepiece.

With our wine sorted, we return downstairs to the air conditioned cave and must now choose our entrée: the Swiss Gruyere (12€), Swiss Emmental aged 11 months (10€) a mixed plate of cheeses (10€) or the fois gras with caramelized onion (10€). We opt for the fois gras and are suitably impressed. Next are the mains: Burratine - buffalo mozzarella filled with soft cream – served

Normally, dining at a French cheese restaurant is some-what intimidating for English speakers.

Just when you think you’ve mastered translating the local cuisine, you are confronted by words like Burratine, Perail Lardé and Blesotto. Thankfully, the Loubert brothers speak perfect English, and our chalkboard menu is described to us in surprising detail, right down to the presentation of the dish and it’s origins.

with fresh asparagus, rocket and parma ham (16€); Tartiflette – a traditional dish from the French Alps made with potatoes, bacon, cream and reblochon cheese (12€); Cheese buffet (19€); Tagliatelle a la Gregoire – a pasta dish tossed into a large parmesan cheese round before serving (14€) and the Camembert Surprise (11€).

We choose the Swiss fondue “moite-moite” for a minimum of 2 people, and a charcuterie plate on the side (20€ pp). The whole meal is a sheer delight as we alternative between the freshly shaved parma ham and smoked beef, bite-size pieces of bread dipped in creamy fondue and gulps of our red wine. Remember to go to this restaurant hungry, as you will want to finish every last morsel.

Le Bistro du Fromager offers seasonal menus using fresh produce so, for example, you can not order a raclette in the summer time. There are also some alternatives to cheese – salmon, duck and veal – but you clearly have to be a lover of cheese to eat here.

Overall, the decadence offered in this dining experience is sure to make anyone’s night memorable, and will have you craving fondue in the weeks to follow!

After our lesson in seasonal cheeses, we are directed upstairs to the wine cellar, where our server takes us through a variety of wines to suit our dish and our pallets. The wines are all sourced from organic vineyards and the

The cuisine at Frog is imaginative, tasty and delicate - an impressive show of beauty colliding with texture. Think organic, fresh produce meets refined and comfortable dining. Throw in deliciously unique cocktails and hand picked wines, and you have one of Nice’s most established and respected restaurants.

Tastefully bathed in warm green and dark wood, it is hard not to feel welcome in this French/American restaurant. Take a seat at the bar as you wait for friends, and sample Frog’s distinctive and creative cocktails … a satisfying reprieve on these warm June nights. The Cucumber Mojito is a unique t wist on this classic summer drink, and is prepared with rhum, lime, cucumber, fresh mint, brown sugar and soda. There’s also a Banana Daiquiri and your choice of Strawberry, Red Fruit or Ginger Caipirissima, with white rum and crushed ice. The cocktail of the day never fails to impress, and you simply must try the Kiwi Cosmo if it’s available!

Be prepared to wait a few minutes for your cocktail, as they are customarily prepared with fresh fruit and flair!

With a nice aperitif under your belt, you can take a seat in the comfy booths or cushion lined tables; the art-filled room adjacent; or the large rectangular high top that is perfect for parties. A specials board compliments the a la carte menu, and together they offer a nice variety of dishes. You will not see the categories of “pasta” “pizza” and “salads” here - a refreshing change in Nice. Rather, start with the herb melted salad, prepared with fresh edible flowers (6€). A dish of grilled homemade peppers with olive oil, garlic and olive tapenade is always popular (8€). And with a name like

Frog, satisfaction is assured with their signature frog’s legs (10€)! Specials this week included the delectable French cheese Reblochon and mescalin salad, drizzled with a strawberry vinaigrette (8.50€). A must-try is the traditional “Rillettes de thon”, similar to paté but with a deliciously meatier consistency (8.50€).

The Philosophy at Frog is healthy and hearty home cooking, and is a testament to the fact that organic produce does indeed taste superior to its counterparts. For example, there’s the classic roast chicken, using only grain-fed poultry (15€) and Asian style Shrimp Kebab with organically grown prawns (18€). The duck is perfectly cooked and ser ved with a honey and orange sauce on a bed of lentils (16€). a bottle. In keeping with Frog’s convictions,

Frog wine is a steal at 14 € there’s the Le Versant in red or white, a Provincial wine made from organic farming practices (19€ bottle).

Finish it all off with an organic apricot crumble with hot chocolate sauce, vanilla crème brûlée, wickedly rich chocolate cake or cheese plate. Priced at just 6€, it is very hard to go past the dessert!

Centrally located in a quiet street just off the Promenade des Anglais, near the Opera, Frog offers a unique and imaginative cuisine, a cheerful vibe, fantastic service and an inspired wine list. Walk away having eaten like a king, with a royal bill at the end!

New flu virus continues to claim victims world wide The initial shock of the H1N1 virus outbreak has subsided, but the threat is far from over. The World Health Organization is warning that the “sneaky” H1N1 virus could spread in developing nations, and the only thing that is sure about a flu virus, is that it is always unpredictable.

Over 13,398 people have been infected in 48 countries, with 95 confirmed deaths (these figures are based on WHO statistics as at May 27). The United States remains the biggest “danger zone”, making up almost half of all cases. Mexico follows closely, then Canada, Japan, Spain and the United Kingdom. France has reported 16 cases with no deaths. The majority of fatalities occurred in Mexico, prompting the “lock down” of Mexico city for 10 days in late April.

So what exactly is the H1N1 virus (formerly known as swine flu) and what can we expect now? Minor outbreaks of swine flu occurred in humans in 1976 and 1988, and in pigs in 1998 and 2007. In April 2009, a new virus was isolated from patients in the U.S and found to be made up of genetic elements from both human influenza and swine influenza. H1N1 spreads from person-to-person in the same way regular seasonal flu viruses do … through sneezing and coughing. It is not spread by food or tap water. Interestingly, the virus seems to be hitting young adults harder than the elderly. Researchers suspect that older people have been exposed to past flu strains that were more similar to the present H1N1 virus, than the newer seasonal flu’s that younger people have experienced. Past exposure equates to stronger immunity.

sonal flu outcomes rather than a “flu pandemic”, it is almost certain that official statistics undercount the real number of cases. Epidemiologists in the U.S believe that more than 100,000 people have actually been infected. The spread in impoverished nations is also likely to be far higher than reported.

But a vaccine is on the way … or is it? Experts are still mulling over whether to actually give the go ahead for the production of an antiH1N1 flu vaccine as this may reduce or even halt the manufacture of vaccines of seasonal flu. Their position remains though that a vaccine is one of the key steps to ward off a potential H1N1 flu pandemic as the new virus spreads around the world, despite its relatively mild symptoms for now in most cases. And the WHO is confident a vaccine will be ready for production in late June/early July.

For now, people can protect themselves from catching H1N1 by avoiding close contact with people who show flu-like symptoms. You should also avoid touching your mouth and nose; clean your hands thoroughly with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand rub; reduce the time spent in crowded settings and generally stay healthy.

UPDATE: The first European law against Internet piracy was accepted in France on May 12, with 296 for and 233 against. As mentioned in the May article, the law foresees the establishment of a government agency – Hadopi – to sanction internet pirates with up to 12 months internet connection cut. The European Parliament is still arguing for the inclusion of Internet access in the basic human rights, which would automatically make the sanctions of Hadopi law inconsistent with EU law. We will keep you posted on developments!

Set among the chic boutiques of Alphonse Karr, this aptly named bar is stylish and vampy, heaving with a happy clientele. We arrived just in time for ladies night … an impressive blend of free champagne and seemingly unlimited free food!

An added delight is the fact that Sushi is made in house, and plates are available for between 6-13€.

The food menu is also delectable. Favourites include the smoked salmon, fois gras and artichoke salad; sesame encrusted tuna and linguini with fois gras and truffles.

Le Karr is a contemporary bar, attracting a comfortable mix of trendy young workers and older, stylish professionals. It appears we are the only Englishspeaking people in the venue, but that is happily met with smiles and an honest interest to speak English to us. Those lucky enough to have reserved a table on Monday night are pleasantly seated at the front of the bar on high tables and chairs, or on elegantly decorated dining tables. For our group of 5, we are directed to the low-set corner sofa and otomans, which encourages mingling and remains at the attention of the busy staff. Retro lighting and fishbowl candleholders complete this relaxed “living-room” ambiance. Le Karr has paid attention to design, dividing its large interior into three stylish seating areas. The dominant color is brown, the surfaces plush and appealing. There is also a terrace, which the “early-birds” were quick to fill.

We follow our champagne with white wine and rosé, and are pleased to see a number of options available by the glass, all very reasonably priced from 5-8€.

Le Karr is undoubtedly a hit with the singles. Eligible batchelors and batchelorettes gleefully fill the bar as the night rolls on and the music takes on a more upbeat tempo. We leave Le Karr having spent far longer here than we had planned – we could have stayed all night if work wasn’t beckoning us the next day!

Table service is prompt and friendly as we gladly accept our first of two free glasses of champagne. Just as quickly, a plate of vegetables, dip, marinated olives, tortilla chips and mini quiches is laid down before us.

Faster than we can eat it, the plate is replaced time and time again. Our glasses of champagne are also promptly refilled.

Recipes from the Riviera Garlic, rosemary & lemon infused lamb with dauphinoise potatoes & fresh fennel & orange salad.

Oranges and fennel are particularly sweet and delicious this time of year and the salad works perfectly with the summer flavours of rosemary, garlic & lemon. The most important thing to remember about lamb is not to over cook it.

METHOD Preheat the oven to 180 C. With a sharp knife, cut away the skin and fatty sections of the lamb. Rub 2 tablespoons of olive oil & 1 ½ teaspoons of salt over the meat. Peel the skin from one lemon. Pour the juice from 2 lemons over the lamb, and place the lemon peel on top. In a baking tray, sit the lamb on a bed of rosemary, leaving some sprigs for the top. Add 6 whole cloves to the pan and place in a hot oven. After 15 minutes, add ½ cup of water to the pan and reduce the oven temperature to 160 C. Cook the lamb for approximately 1 hour, basting every 15 minutes.

Dauphinoise potatoes: Thinly slice the potatoes (3mm) and layer in a deep baking dish. In a bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk, and season with salt and pepper. Pour the mixture over the potatoes and bake in a pre-heated oven for 25-30 minutes. When cooked, the gratin should be golden on top and the potatoes tender.

Fennel & orange salad: Make the orange segments by first cutting off the top and bottom of the orange, and with a sharp knife cut away the rest of the skin. Slice the orange into segments. To prepare the fennel, slice off the top and bottom, discard the first layer and slice thinly. Arrange the fennel on a plate and top with orange segments. Mix together the juice of one lemon and 2 tablespoons of olive oil and drizzle over the salad. Season with salt and pepper. .

To serve: Remove lamb from the oven and let it rest for 10 minutes.

With a sharp knife, cut the lamb into 1.5 cm slices. Place the meat on a plate and drizzle with the warm pan juices. Serve with a slice of the dauphinoise potatoes and a nice serving of the fennel and orange salad.
