FROM THE EDITOR Dear Conquerors, Once again, welcome to the December edition of A LA Mode. I hope you will enjoy the many DIYs, recipes, and articles this magazine has to offer. Though it may not seem like it, the magazine you currently hold has taken months of hard work. The magazine staff and I hope that the work you see reflects just this. With this edition, we wanted to have a standardized style and still maintain the look of a high school magazine. Our theme color, red, reflects not only our school but also the festivities that come with December. Of course, this magazine would not have been possible without Ms. Guzman, Mrs. McReynolds, and the entire journalism staff. Lastly, I wish you all the best of luck on your finals. Happy holidays! - Valeria Wang

What’s This Winter You Speak Of? Caroline Torres

Once, many years ago, Southern California experienced something I’ve never seen since: a wet winter. I remember sitting on the floor of my garage, bundled in my weight in blankets. I opened the door just a bit, so that I could see out and watch the rain pounding onto the pavement and the water gathering and pouring in rivers into the storm drains. Since then I’ve occasionally found myself doubting the validity of that memory. A storm like that in Hacienda Heights? I must have just been remembering a movie or a dream. With my only true memory of winter weather questionable in origin, the truth of the matter became undeniable: I don’t know the true meaning of the word “winter”, and chances are, neither do you. To be fair, I don’t think I really want to. Consider this: in Southern California, the difference between the average temperature in August and the average temperature in January is just 16˚F. Compare that to the average difference between the two months in the United States as a whole, which is more than 40˚F. While I take the opportunity that weather below 70˚presents to bundle up with layers and a not-so-fashionable beanie, my cousins waltz about in t-shirts and shorts. It’s laughable how ill-suited I, and many other Californians, are to the cold. This year, El Niño is expected to descend upon us unsuspecting beachgoers and sunbathers, and it’s going to be rough. El Niño will force a taste of real winter upon us, whether we want it or not. A weather phenomenon that will bring much-needed rain to our drought-ridden state, the season-long storm is much anticipated, but will we really be ready for it? Southern Californians are notorious for their inability to cope with rain. In San Gabriel Valley, our rollicking hills and roads are ill-suited for rain; mudslides and car wrecks abound with even the slightest trickle. A silver lining does exist though. At least now I won’t feel totally ridiculous when I find myself wearing my weight in layers.

Q&A

KELSEY BRENNAN INTERVIEW BY CAROLINE TORRES

What made you want to be a teacher?

You graduated from La Habra High School, and your former high school had offered you a teaching position. But you came here instead. Why did you make that choice?

My mom’s a teacher, so I feel like I grew up in a classroom. I always wanted to be a teacher. I’ve been dancing since I was three. I stopped dancing for maybe half a year when I was around twenty, and I missed it so much I knew that if I didn’t have that in some aspect of my life I wouldn’t feel whole. Combining my love for teaching with my passion seemed natural.

When did your love of dancing really click for you? Ever since I was three I’ve been in dance class, and it wasn’t because my mom and dad put me in dance class. It was because I loved it. When I was in junior high I played club soccer, and I was asked to be on the competitive dance team at my studio, and my parents made me choose. Choosing was easy. Dance was what I loved; it let me express myself. I’m not one that can express myself verbally very well, so my emotions come out when I dance. I just knew that if I wasn’t dancing I wouldn’t be happy.

Is there a dance style that’s easiest to express yourself in? I’d think contemporary or lyrical is where you really express your emotions and get

I could have said yes to La Habra. But I don’t think that by staying there I would have learned anything. I would have just been comfortable. I was ready for something new. I’m not one for staying in my comfort zone, since you don’t grow or learn anything new that way. Coming here to Los Altos was scary and new. I didn’t know any students or teachers, but I think it’s the only way I can grow as a teacher.

Is that philosophy of learning by stepping out of your comfort zone reflected in your teaching? Absolutely. That’s why I want, even though they may be reluctant, to introduce [my students] to different styles. I don’t know what they’ve been introduced to, but if you want to be in dance, and you want to get better, you have to do different things, because you won’t grow otherwise.

Ms. Brennan teaches dance courses in Room A-8.

Three, two, one! Thus starts the beginning of a brand new year. A popular trend for personal health and wellbeing continues to thrive when speaking with students and staff about their New Year’s resolutions.

“I plan on being a better father and better coach. Also to have more patience with my kids and with my players. I feel that I need to be a better person and by accomplishing those things they will fall into place. I also want to set a healthy example for my softball girls and students by continuing to work out and watch what I eat. To make it happen that means no fast food and also running with my softball girls.”

“I want to learn how to drive. In the new year, I also hope I get into Cal State Fullerton.” Erick Murillo, senior Ignacio Hernandez, softball coach and sports medicine

1.

State your goal(s).

2.

Monitor your desired behavior. Keep a chart or some kind of record of your daily success.

3.

Reward yourself with small treats when successful. Rewards could be hanging out with friends, watching a movie, or even just chocolate. Decemember 2014

Whether it is sleeping in all day, hanging out with friends, or eating lots of food, winter break allows students the freedom to have fun without the stress of school the next day. As winter break comes closer, chatter arises amongst the students about their plans for the anticipated break. Some are going out of town, while others plan to have a “staycation.” At home, or far away, one can make their break

a memorable one. No matter how a person may spend it, all that matters is that they enjoy the two weeks free of school.

Getting away may be the perfect way to enjoy the break. Senior Ashley Lozano plans to head north for the winter. “I’m planning to go to Sacramento to spend time with my dad,” mentions Lozano.

Not as far off, senior Amber Marchand describes her plans, “I’m probably going to Mt. Baldy since I go there every year.” Marchand adds, “I’m excited to see snow. We never get any snow in Hacienda Heights.”

Sophomore Shelsea Garcia has a busy schedule for her break. Garcia explains, “Part of my winter break will be spent at Circus Circus in Las Vegas. Then I’m going to the mountains to go sledding. To top it all off, I’m going touring in Hollywood and then to Disneyland.”

Although some stay close to home, they still take advantage of the break. Senior Araceli Herrera says, “I’m going to Universal Studios with my brother and his girlfriend. My family hosts many family gatherings, so I’ll be spending a lot of time with my family.”

CODE NAME: OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD By Becky Nava

Since 2008 Los Altos has participated in Operation Christmas Child, a program dedicated to giving underprivileged children from all over the world shoe boxes packed with Christmas gifts. The goal is to fill a shoebox with small gifts and send them out globally in the hopes of making a child’s day. CONQUERORS FOR CHRIST PRESIDENT: IRENE CHIA Why did you decide to collaborate with Samaritan’s Purse? We wanted to help share the joy of packing Christmas presents while also allowing people to participate in changing a child’s life. How many boxes were donated this year? We raised a total of 196 boxes this year! Where do the boxes go? The boxes fly all over the world. Last year, many boxes traveled to the Phillippines due to the natural disasters that took place. Samaritan’s Purse also once had to find camel transportation in order to bring these presents to kids. Oftentimes, boxes are delivered to places that do not have running water or accessible electricity. Other places include orphanages and shelter homes.

WHERE WILL YOUR BOX END UP? Mrs. Campbell writes the student’s fourth period teacher to ensure the class receives a chance for the pizza party prize.

During lunch, senior Isis Ouzounian invites fellow students to participate in the Operation Christmas Child event.

t is time for drinking hot chocolate, watching movies, and snuggling up in a warm blanket. Winter is here and what better way to show how you feel about it then through your style. Ivory, cocoa, camel, olive green, and charcoal are few of the many colors one will see speckled about our campus this winter season. Among our Conquerors, neutral tones seem to be the trend. Personality is seen through the way you dress, so make sure you make the best of every outfit. Your personality you have determines the right style. Many people have many different ways to shop for their clothes. Kaylee Zuniga, junior, remarks, “When I pick out my outfits I usually like to choose something pink. I’m a major girly girl, and sparkles are my best friend when choosing an outfit. I typically go to Forever 21, H&M, and sometimes Goodwill to buy my clothes and accessories.” Alan Macias, junior, states, “When I go shopping for clothes, I usually research online first so that I know what I would like to get when I go to the actual store. I usually go for more classy or more preppy clothes. I shop mainly at Macy’s, since they offer many of my favorite brands, but I also shop at Nordstrom Rack and Zara.” For most people, it’s very hard to choose an outfit in the mornings, especially if you are in a rush. Make sure to plan all of your outfits the night before, that way you wont have any trouble in the mornings. Lastly, be sure to start gathering all those scarves, gloves, hoodies, boots, and much more for winter 2014!

For a Christmas full of Love Love Actually (2003)

For those heartfelt romantics, Stacy Delgadillo, junior, proposes “Love Actually” because “it’s really sweet to watch.”

For a Christmas full of Magic It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)

One movie that Abby Clark, junior, just cannot miss during the holidays is the classic, “It’s a Wonderful Life.” She says, “It just really makes you cry.”

Miracle on 34th Street (1947)

A true Christmas movie fanatic, Tina Banes, administration, finds this movie to be a personal favorite for the Christmas time. She comments,“I like the old movies. You may not believe in the religious or the miracle part of it but it’s the little girl that believes in it while the adults just focus on the decorations. The little girl sees the twinkle of Christmas.”

For a Christmas full of Laughter Elf (2003)

Sean Kane, science, recommends the movie “Elf” (2003) since “it is absolutely hilarious and anybody can relate to them.” Sophomore, Ray Steward, agrees with him commenting, “Spaghetti with syrup is actually really good.”

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Freshman, Victoria Rodriguez, nominates “The Nightmare before Christmas” as a great option, commenting, “I like Jack Skellington and the animation of the whole movie.” Decemember 2014
