Deepwater drilling paying off in the Gulf of Mexico In November 2017, oil production in the US surpassed 10MMbbl/d for the first time since the 1970s, with ramped up production from the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) being a significant contributing factor in reaching this milestone. Driven by technological advancements, expansion into the deep, and ultra-deep waters of the GoM has unlocked new development areas and operators in the region have been gradually adding to total capacities since September 2011, when production fell below 1.1MMbbl/d. In recent years, operational start-up at major deepwater projects like BP’s Thunder Horse expansion or Shell’s complex network of subsea tie-backs interconnected with an FPSO unit at the Stones field has unlocked the significant hydrocarbon potential of previously unexplored portions of the region. Further growth is anticipated through 2018, with 75,000bbl/d of oil capacity, and 25MMcf/d of natural gas capacity planned to be brought online in the latter half of the year from Chevron’s Big Foot field, and an additional 100,000bbl/d of oil production expected from the Stampede development, where Hess acts as the primary operator. The completion of these developments, among others, is projected to raise US Gulf of Mexico oil production capacity to 1.9MMbl/d before the end of 2018. Increase in production has been a natural result of major developers adapting to the ‘lower for longer’ oil price environment: exploration budgets have been cut, project costs have been slashed through redesign, and a greater focus has been placed on maximising results from preestablished wells. This drive to reduce costs is now also being aided by considerable federal support for the oil and gas industry. In October 2017, the Trump administration opened huge swathes of previously restricted federal waters for offshore oil and gas exploration. In December, it announced its intention to relax some of the regulatory burdens that have governed major projects since the Macondo incident – the largest oil spill in US history. Furthermore, additional capital can now be generated due to some of the major corporate tax cuts that are coming into play. These factors, combined with oil prices reaching more than US$70/bbl (Brent) in January 2018, are helping to create an environment where operator profitability is at its highest point in four years and optimism is growing.

In the GoM, Total’s entrance to the region through partnership with Chevron is an example of this newfound optimism materialising. Not only has the French operator acquired a stake in the Anchor oil discovery, it also recently (January 2018) announced a major new discovery that it jointly owns with Chevron: the Ballymore oil prospect in the Mississippi Canyon area with an initial 204 metres of net oil pay confirmed. Shell also announced, in January 2018, its Whale discovery. Located close to the Perdido production platform, the Whale deepwater well encountered 427 metres of oil bearing pay. Although complete resource estimates have not yet been revealed, the new discoveries underpin the positive outlook for the region. In other major US project news, Byron Energy and Otto Energy announced successful results from a third exploration well in the South Marsh Island Block 71 area. Development plans are already being considered as the partnership’s primary platform in the area is nearing completion and will be in-service before the second half of 2018. Development drilling at the Buckskin field also began in January 2018. Once SeaDrill’s West Neptune Vessel completes the process, the installation of subsea equipment (provided by TechnipFMC) will begin. Shell’s Vito development also progressed in December 2017 when the project awarded offshore engineering solutions provider Sembcorp Marine a contract to construct both the hulls and the topsides for the project. Inside this issue... On Sunday 25 February the EIC reached the grand old age of 75, making us one of the world’s oldest trade associations. We’ll be carrying out lots of fun activities throughout the year to celebrate this milestone, starting with a members’ afternoon tea at the House of Lords on 15 March. For more information on this and the other fun, inclusive events we’ve got planned please turn to page 19. At the end of January we held our second Westminster Round Table in as many years, bringing together 13 EIC member companies with the Minister of State for Trade and Export Promotion, Baroness Rona Fairhead. This was an exclusive opportunity for our members to influence the government’s export and industrial strategies by highlighting the biggest challenges facing the UK supply chain. Topics under discussion included Brexit, energy and trade policy, export growth, development of overseas partners, funding for skills and technology, and the establishment of centres of excellence and supply hubs. A write up from the day can found on page 18. Looking ahead, we hold the first of 2018 EIC Connect events in Abu Dhabi on 17 April. Last year’s edition made headlines around the world due to the participation of the UAE Minister of Energy, His Excellency Suhail Al Mazrouei, who we hope to welcome again in 2018. A key part of the event, and one which attracts procurement specialist from all over the GCC is its exhibition. We caught up with 3W Networks CEO Walid Gamali, Proserv’s VP of Business Development Garry Kidd and Torquemeters Ltd’s Business Development Manager Craig Holmes to find out what visitors to their stands can expect to find on offer (page 12).

One-to-one with Jim Land CEO, Cresent
Cresent are control of work and health and safety specialists with 35 years’ experience working within the global energy sector. Cresent’s passion is making work safe. They help companies to make their operations and maintenance processes, systems and training safe, efficient and easy. As a business they are outcome focused, consultancy-led and flexible: providing their customers with the right solutions to fit their unique requirements. Cresent offers businesses electronic or paper-based control of work solutions, off-the-shelf and/or bespoke training, consultancy and the hardware requirement to make their business and their people safe.
Q
You’ve been in the O&G industry for almost 40 years, what’s been the most significant change since you started out?
Our relationship has only grown since, and we’ve continued to win additional work improving safety though training, software and hardware.
This recent downturn has been incredibly difficult. Businesses have tried their hand at ‘doing it themselves’ in an effort to save money and this ultimately has an impact on their staff’s safety, but it also puts companies like ours on the backburner.
Q
And, looking ahead, what does the future hold for Cresent?
We see the oil and gas market picking up in 2018 and expect it to be busier than ever in 2019-20. It will be interesting to see what lessons have been learnt. A lot of good people have moved to other markets and this has left a skills and knowledge gap.
A
In an effort to protect my business, we reduced our staff by 50%. That was incredibly difficult for me because I value every one of my team. This was not done in vain as we have been able to survive the worst of the downturn while still providing an incredible service to our clients – which is important.
Q
Over 20 of those years have been spent at Cresent. What’s been the biggest company highlight to date?
A
In 2011 we won our biggest contract to date, providing control of work consultancy, software and training to BP Iraq.
Since winning that contract we’ve gone on to translate WorkSafe® into additional languages (specifically Arabic and Mandarin). We have trained more than 6,000 Iraqi nationals, through e-learning and classroom training, again in multiple languages.
A
To help maintain safety standards Cresent has developed a new, easy access, easy to use, online training portal to make training more accessible and at lower cost to more people. Technology, combined with collaboration is an effective way of avoiding repeating the excessive costs of the past.
And the UK O&G industry?
Q A
We are already seeing exploration for new reserves and development of known reserves on the increase. Oil companies have no choice but to top up their reserves sooner or later and now is the time for this. With so many people now gone from the

industry there is a risk that costs will increase as demand increases for their services. I hope to see moderation and people looking at the longerterm future for the industry. Optimistic perhaps, but hopefully we will avoid such rapid and significant changes in the oil price in the future. Q
What about Cresent would come as a surprise to our readers?
A
Unlike a lot of providers out there we are able to provide a holistic approach to control of work. We pride ourselves on being experts in our field and as such we can provide our customers with the whole package, starting with consultancy, implementing an electronic or paper-based system, providing high-quality, specialist training and even the hardware and consumables required for the Lock Out Tag Out process.
We have a team who live and breathe safety and who are all committed to supporting our customers make their businesses and staff, in a range of hazardous industries, safer.

Ellis doubles up for Belgian energy order
Centaur cable saddles designed and manufactured by leading cable cleat manufacturer, Ellis, have been installed to secure two separate high voltage cables in a power tunnel in the west Flemish Region of Belgium. The Stevin project, which when complete will feed the Belgian interior with wind, solar and other forms of renewable energy generated in the coastal region of the country, is being undertaken by Belgium’s electricity transmission system operator, Elia. The renewable power is carried through the tunnel by Nexans and Silec 380KV/3,000MW cables, which are installed on opposite sides of it, and secured by Ellis’ Centaur saddles. Tony Conroy, Ellis’ Global Sales Director, said, ‘Stevin is a huge project for Belgian power generation, and one that really does enhance the country’s standing in terms of the availability and consumption of renewable energy. Ellis’ Centaur cable saddles installed to secure high voltage (HV) cables
‘Having our products specified for such a vital element of such a high-profile project bears testament to both the work being carried out by our local distributor, NBR Nussbaumer, and the reputation we’ve earned over the years as the experts when it comes to cable cleats and the protection of cables in short-circuit scenarios.’ Ellis’ Centaur cable saddles are heavyduty, extruded aluminium saddle cleats that were initially designed and developed by the company in response to a serious safety issue surrounding the restraint of high voltage cables up to 400kV with a diameter range of 100 to 160mm. They have been used extensively in power tunnel projects, including the London Power Tunnels project, the Woodhead Tunnel in the Peak District National Park and the Venda Nova III Cable Tunnel in Portugal. ‘The Centaur cable saddle is the kind of innovation we pride ourselves on,’ continued Tony. ‘We designed, developed and tested it at a time when there was nothing on the market guaranteed to secure cables of the size being used in the Stevin project, and have since seen it develop into the first choice product for power tunnel installations around the world.’

The return of nuclear new build to the UK Find out more about the nuclear industry and its re-emergence in the UK
The world’s first commercial nuclear power plant, Calder Hall, was connected to the UK National Grid in October 1956, one of twelve nuclear power stations commissioned to be built in the following 10 years as part of the UK’s nuclear programme. This new power source caused great excitement with the Lord Privy Seal, Rab Butler suggesting that ‘it may be that after 1965 every new power station being built will be an atomic power station.’ This was not quite the case, but the UK did continue to be at the forefront of this new technology, eventually building 21 power stations in the UK and sharing their knowledge and technology worldwide. But in the 1990s the UK government fell out of love with nuclear and Sizewell B, originally planned as part of a number of new reactors, was the last to be completed in 1995. Fast forward to 2018 though and the absence of nuclear new build in the UK is set to change. The UK currently has the largest nuclear new build programme outside of China, with six projects planned over the next 10 years, requiring an investment of at least £70bn. Construction has started at Hinkley Point C, which is the first nuclear new build project in the UK for over 20 years. The plant is scheduled to start-up in 2025, requiring a total investment of £19.6bn. Around £9bn of contracts have been signed so far, with UK companies on course to secure 64% of the total supply chain spend. New build projects are also being developed at Wylfa in Anglesey and Moorside in Cumbria where Japanese and Korean reactor designs will be developed. Proposals have also been announced for projects at Oldbury, Sizewell and Bradwell.
If you want to find out more about the nuclear industry and its re-emergence in the UK the EIC is running the Fundamentals of Nuclear course on Wednesday 18 April at the EIC in London.
Book now
The Fundamentals of Nuclear Wednesday 18 April 2018 EIC London Run by industry expert Peter Doyle, this course focuses on the science of nuclear, the effects of radiation, nuclear safety and its relevance to the supply chain, through to the current UK market, future markets, new build projects, existing facilities and decommissioning. You will receive an overview of the industry from both a practical and commercial perspective.
Contact: emily.light@the-eic.com Peter has over 33 years’ experience working globally in the nuclear industry for Westinghouse including 10 years in operations engineering, culminating in managing the engineering aspects of manufacturing the first fuel load for Sizewell B. He then progressed to commissioning the Oxide Fuels Complex at Springfields in the UK and became operations manager for the facility. Peter has now set up his own consultancy business and become an approved trainer for the National Skills Academy Nuclear.

EIC Westminster round table
Minister of State for Trade and Export Promotion, Baroness Rona Fairhead hosted by
Monday 29 January 2018
The Minister met with 13 EIC member companies to discuss issues facing the UK energy industry On 29 January, the EIC held a round table with Baroness Rona Fairhead, Minister of State for Trade and Export Promotion at the Department for International Trade (DIT), and 13 CEOs from EIC member companies representing the full range of energy sectors and organisations of all sizes. The firms which took part in the round table were Alderley, Atkins, Booth Welsh, DNV GL, Elfab, Highview Power Storage, Mech-Tool Engineering, Process Vision, Schneider Electric, Severn Glocon Group, Spencer Group, TP Group and YPS Valves. The meeting covered high level industry issues, focusing on the challenges that British suppliers to local and global energy sectors are facing, such as Brexit, development of overseas partners, energy and trade policy, export growth, funding for skills and technology and the establishment of centres of excellence and supply hubs. Minister of State for Trade and Export Promotion, Baroness Rona Fairhead said, ‘As we build a new export strategy, DIT will continue to engage closely with businesses, including those in the energy sector, to ensure that we are providing the right support to enable them to take advantage of opportunities overseas.’ Baroness Rona Fairhead, Minister of State for Trade and Export Promotion (centre left) with EIC CEO Stuart Broadley (centre right) and representatives from EIC member companies
Commenting on the round table event, EIC CEO Stuart Broadley said, ‘The EIC Westminster Round Table highlighted just how keen government is to support the UK energy supply chain to win work around the world. ‘It was very reassuring to hear emphasis on continuity and stability when it comes to post-Brexit trade between the UK and the EU27, with the Minister announcing that work is already underway to convert existing Free Trade Agreements into Bilateral Trade Agreements. ‘Among the EIC member companies present, a key message was that “together we are stronger”, with a real openness to sharing information and forming joint ventures to ramp up UK capability being expressed. ‘The EIC will now begin to develop the UK’s first energy supply chain capability register, which will be of vital importance to the government as it works on post-Brexit trade agreements.’ As a former Business Ambassador for UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) with a strong background in global business, Baroness Fairhead brings a wealth of business and economic experience to the DIT. Rona was Chairman of the BBC Trust from 2014 to 2017. Prior to this, she was Chairman and CEO of the Financial Times Group from 2006 to 2013. In 2012 she received a CBE for Services to Industry. The EIC and DIT have a long history of working together to support UK energy supply chain companies to expand into new markets around the world. A similar round table event was held in 2017, while the two organisations regularly co-host export showcases around the UK. The DIT is also a member of the EIC Connect Advisory Board, the EIC’s global event model which brings together suppliers and major operators and contractors to discuss how they can work together on active and future projects. The EIC has prepared a full briefing pack detailing the issues raised and the Minister’s responses which has been shared with all EIC member companies.

The EIC turns 75
In March this year the EIC hit the grand old age of 75, making us one of the oldest trade associations in the world. To celebrate this incredible milestone we’ll be holding a series of events throughout the year, starting with afternoon tea at the House of Lords on Thursday 15 March.
House of Lords afternoon tea
This exclusive EIC member event is being hosted by Lord Popat with our special guest of honour Minister of State for Trade and Export Promotion, Baroness Rona Fairhead. We’ll include a follow up article in next month’s Inside Energy with lots of pictures from the day.
Global celebrations
As you’ll know the EIC has a network of offices in the UK and around the world who are all keen to get involved in the 75th anniversary celebrations. A special celebration is taking place in Rio on 19 March, while the other offices are all busy planning lots of fun, inclusive activities – we’ll update you as soon as we get dates and venues confirmed.
Charity cycle ride Photos © 2003-2018 Shutterstock, Inc
Proceeds from all EIC 75th celebration events will go to two charities selected by EIC staff: Cancer Research UK and The Ocean Cleanup. Perhaps the most notable event we’ve got planned is the EIC charity bike ride. Starting out from our Aberdeen office, Team EIC will cycle via our Wynyard office down to the London HQ. They’ll be covering about 580 miles in five days (8-12 June) – an impressive feat and one worthy of support. To make a contribution please visit www.justgiving.com/teams/EIC-Charity-Cycle-Challenge
Founding members
We’re incredibly proud to say that four member companies have been with us from the very start. These are ABB, Cape, Motherwell Bridge and Siemens. We’d like to use this space to thank them for nearly eight decades of support and will be working with them to support 75th anniversary events at their locations – watch this space for more information.

Middle East news Regional update
With only six weeks to go, our signature EIC Connect Oil, Gas & Beyond event is beginning to take shape. Please take some time to get the latest updates from the Terry W illis website (www.the-eic.com/ EICConnect/OilGasBeyondUAE.aspx) and if you haven’t already done so, then register as we are certain that the event will soon be sold out. The same applies to ADIPEC. This is now firmly established as the number one oil and gas show on the planet. Last year’s show attracted a grand total of 77 exhibitors on the EIC managed UK pavilion and interest is far higher than it was this time last year which means it’s important to book early to avoid disappointment. The main event this month is our annual golf tournament which has become a firm favourite on our calendar. We have to extend a huge thanks to our headline sponsor, Triplefast. Looking back on February, we were pleased to host almost 60 guests at our lunch with Wood’s VP Business Development Michael Mair who provided an update on the company’s activities following its acquisition of Amec Foster Wheeler last year. Their support for the EIC Connect event next month plus ADIPEC remains unwavering. Another event of note in February was the Break Bulk Middle East exhibition and conference where we were asked to provide a project overview of the GCC, highlighting specific areas where opportunities could appear over the next couple of years. The prime focus of the participants being the big capital intensive long lead items which will always provide the major challenges within the heavy logistics/shipping sector. We also took the occasion to meet member companies Agility, GAC Shipping, Mammoet and Panalpina, all of whom were participants at the event. Interest in Iran remains high. Our proposed UK pavilion at the Iran Oil Show in May is scheduled to go ahead and we look forward to a successful week. Our thanks to the trade team at the British Embassy in Tehran and the British Iranian Chamber of Commerce who have provided invaluable assistance. Another event happening this month is Middle East Electricity, taking place here in Dubai during the first week of March, and always popular with those member companies who are active in the power sector. Get in touch Share your news and views...
It’s our intention to engage with as many members as possible during that week. One particular focus is to ensure that everybody is up-to-date and fully conversant with EICDataStream. Naturally, if there are any members locally who would like some further training on how to get the most out of this very important business development tool, then please do not hesitate to contact us. Ruwais refinery to receive US$3.1bn of investment
ADNOC will invest US$3.1bn to introduce crude processing flexibility at the Ruwais oil refinery. It follows the award of the EPC contract for the project to a joint venture between Samsung Engineering and CB&I. The refinery modifications, scheduled to be completed by the end of 2022, will enable ADNOC’s Ruwais Refinery-West complex to process up to 420,000bbl/d of Upper Zakum crude, or similar crude types from the market, freeing up Murban crude, which commands a higher price, to be utilised for export sales.

Asia Pacific news Regional update
In 2018 EIC Asia Pacific will deliver two EIC Connect events. The first one is in Ho Chi Minh City on 17 May. The second one is in Azman Kuala Lumpur in October Nasir 2018. Obviously this is quite a major task for the KL team, however, preparations for both events are going well. For Vietnam, an advisory board has been set up and its first meeting was held on 7 February. The meeting was chaired by the British Ambassador to Vietnam HE Giles Lever and was attended by senior representatives from the Vietnam national oil and gas company, PetroVietnam (PVN) and the national power company, Electricity of Vietnam (EVN). Other members of the board include key players such as Aveva Asia, GE Vietnam, Lloyd’s Register, Mainstream, NES Global, Pepperl + Fuchs, Premier Oil, PTSC, PV Gas, Repsol, VietBid, Vietsovpetro and Wood. PVN has announced that it is aiming to increase its oil and gas reserves by 10-15m tonnes in 2018. To that end, it will promote exploration work, giving priority to projects in Bloc B – Cá Voi Xanh (Blue Whale) and Cá Rồng Đỏ (Red Dragon Fish). Last year, PVN managed to surpass all business production targets. The domestic yield of crude oil was 1.29m tonnes beyond the annual target, and its contribution to the state budget exceeded US$1bn, significantly contributing to the national gross domestic product growth. We are optimistic that there will be more opportunities for the UK supply chain in 2018 due to the continuing growth of the industry in Vietnam. In the renewables sector, Vietnam is making significant progress in the solar segment. After years of waiting, the solar power market has just received exciting news: the country’s prime minister has decreed that EVN must purchase all electricity produced by grid-connected projects at 9.35 cent per kWh. In related news, local player Thanh Thanh Cong Corporation (TTC) has officially announced that it will spend around US$1bn to build and operate 20 solar PV plants in Vietnam.
Construction of these projects will start in Q4 2018. Besides TTC, there are over 30 domestic and foreign investors starting to develop solar power projects with capacity ranging from 20 to 300MW, mostly located in the central region. On 8 March, the Fundamentals of FPSOs and Subsea course is taking place, being led by industry expert Dr John Preedy. Also in March we are making plans to organise a business presentation with the national utility company of Malaysia, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) as well as one of the largest oil and gas companies, Sapura Energy. North and Central America news Regional update
In February, we held two open house events which we will replicate this month on the 13th and 27th. On these dates, Regional Analyst Jake Gillan welcomes members who wish to receive Amand a Duho n EICDataStream training. No booking is required: training sessions begin every hour, on the hour, during the designated time slots for the day. These sessions are brilliant for members who are unfamiliar with EICDataStream, or members who want to brush up on their knowledge or discover some of the more advanced aspects of our project tracking database. We were delighted to welcome EIC global member Petrofac to our Houston office last month. We will continue to arrange more business presentations over the next year. To further highlight opportunities in the region, we are working to bring back the highly successful one-to-one appointments held within the margins of OTC last year, so members can liaise directly with key operators and contractors. The Houston team is also focused on highlighting prospects in growth areas such as the North and Central America midstream and downstream sectors, as well as emerging markets, such as Mexico, and will organise events to help our members identify and pursue opportunities in these sectors and markets. A great example of this initiative is EIC Connect Oil & Gas USA 2018, which will take place in Houston on 6 September. The conference sessions, company briefings, one-to-one meetings, exhibition and sponsorship opportunities will be highly valuable to members who are looking to enter and/or expand their reach in North and Central America. Later this month, we will welcome EIC members to join us for the launch of the EIC United States Country Report in Houston. The report contains a wealth of information on some of the nation’s major projects within the various energy sub-sectors. It provides insight into how these sectors have developed, and the project activities that some of the more active major players are currently undertaking. The report will also evaluate some of the key socio-economic factors that are affecting how business is done in the US. Home to one of the most well-developed and mature energy sectors in the world, the US is also one of the world leaders in annual energy production and consumption. For this reason, the US is arguably the most attractive energy investment opportunity; billions of dollars are invested every year to develop infrastructure, research and new technologies, or to design and build new projects aimed at exploiting the nation’s vast reserves of natural resources. Back in January we held Ocyan’s first supply chain event since its rebranding. With six units, one being a brand new FPSO – Pioneiro de Libra – and a 12-year contract with Petrobras, the company has big plans and lots of opportunities for EIC members to work with them. Next month EIC Rio will be launching a new workshop: Understanding Hazardous Areas. The course will explain the concept of hazardous areas and how to specify the electrical products correctly to ensure the safety of people, infrastructure and environment around industrial processes.

Transfer of rights auction planned for 2018 The Brazilian government is hoping to organise an auction for production-sharing contracts in the pre-salt province targeting surplus resources in the ‘transfer-of-rights’ area negotiated with Petrobras in 2010. The transfer-of-rights agreement saw the government give Petrobras the rights to produce up to 5bn barrels of oil from specific areas in the Santos Basin (eg the Búzios and Sépia fields) in exchange for shares in the company. These areas, however, are estimated to contain between 6-15bn boe of additional reserves. It is understood that a final decision will depend on negotiations with Petrobras over the exact amount of surplus resources but government sources are hopeful that an auction could take place in June or November 2018.

Chile to phase-out traditional coal-fired plants The Chilean Energy Ministry and an association of local power generation companies have agreed not to begin any coal-fired power projects unless they feature carbon capture and storage technology. The agreement has also led to the creation of a working group which will set a timetable for the phase-out of existing coal-fired plants as part of an ambitious goal to generate 70% of the country’s electricity from renewable sources by 2050. Coal-fired plants were responsible for 22% of the country’s installed capacity in 2016. The companies involved in the agreement include major players such as AES Gener, Colbún, Enel and Engie Energia Chile (formerly E-CL).
