LNG key to Vietnam’s power demand Vietnam’s future power demand and energy transition have been hot topics of discussion recently. The country has been making moves by approving more renewables and natural gas projects. However, the country still relies heavily on hydro and coal as can be seen in the country’s power generation mix. Coal consumption in Vietnam has been on an upward trend since 2012 and in 2019, Vietnam was the 10th largest consumer of coal in the world. LNG to power projects in Vietnam have not been in an established position over the years. However, LNG is expected to be the key in coping with the country’s future power demand. Vietnam’s need for LNG development is now greater than ever due to the instability of the power system, power shortages and energy security requirements. With many of the coal projects being delayed and hydropower potential being almost fully exploited, LNG is now seen as an important source of energy for the future. 2020 saw significant progress being made for LNG development in Vietnam with the government expecting electricity consumption to grow by 10-12% annually, movement towards LNG is a solution to address Vietnam’s surging energy demand. LNG demand is also set to increase significantly in the country with the import demand expected to increase by around 5mtpa of LNG by 2025 to 15mtpa by 2035.

The first phase with a capacity of 2.25GW is targeted to start operation in 2026-2027 while the second phase, with the same capacity, is expected to start in 2029-2030. Meanwhile Tokyo Gas and Marubeni have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with PetroVietnam Power to build a LNG-fired power plant with an estimated total investment of US$1.93bn. The project will be located 200km from Hanoi in the coastal province of Quang Ninh.

LNG will be a significant feedstock to help meet the growing double digit demand growth and it will also help the country in reducing its carbon dioxide emissions. Coal-based projects in the country have been impacted with delays due to various environmental and financing issues. The Vietnam Energy Institute (VEI) has stated that the country is set to reduce at least half of its planned new coal-fired power plant generation capacity this decade. As for renewable energy, it is a growing market but still relies on certain weather conditions while nuclear power projects are being put on hold due to the cost. It is clear that LNG will play an essential role in improving energy supply security, reducing air pollution, and supporting the gradual transition towards a low carbon future in Vietnam.

More opportunities are expected for LNG development in Vietnam in the coming years. It has recently been reported that the Vietnam Energy Institute is currently drafting a new master Power Development Plan (PDP8) in which 22 LNG power plants are being listed, the first of which will be operational by 2023. Not only that, Vietnam’s National Steering Committee for Electricity Development has stated that Vietnam would need LNG power plants in the north and the centre to replace the Hải Phòng 3 and Vũng Áng 3 coal-fired thermal power plants. The committee is also expecting the capacity of new LNG power plant projects to reach 12.75GW by 2030.

2021 will see further investment and government support for the development of LNG in Vietnam. The Mui Ke Ga LNG project is a good example of where government support can be seen. Vietnam’s prime minister has issued a directive to the Ministry of Industry and Trade to include the project in Vietnam’s upcoming Power Development Plan 8 (PDP8). Involvement of major international companies such as ExxonMobil, Tokyo Gas and Marubeni Corporation is proof that Vietnam is serious about the need to develop the LNG sector. ExxonMobil is set to build the proposed US$5.09bn Haiphong LNG power and terminal project after receiving approval from the Haiphong city authorities.

With more and more opportunities in the country, Vietnam is set to become a market of interest for companies involved in the LNG power and regasification sectors in the coming years. As the country moves away from coal, the LNG market in Vietnam will offer opportunities for both domestic and international investors. LNG looks to be a more practical solution as Vietnam is focussing not only on shifting from fossil fuels to renewables, but also to affordable, reliable, flexible and resilient cleaner energy options to cope with future power demand. Operator: ACWA Power Value: US$280m Development of a 240MW onshore wind farm in Absheron and Khizi, Azerbaijan. The site is expected to hold 40 x 6MW wind turbines. ACWA Power has signed three agreements – the official power purchase, investment and transmission connection agreements for the development.

Operator: Nature Energy Value: US$50m Development of a biogas plant on a plot at Kværs, close to the Sønderborg motorway. It will initially convert 400,000 tonnes of biomass but could double in the future. Wärtsilä Corporation has started works for the plant be able to upgrade more than 40m m3 of biogas each year.

Operator: APGenco Value: US$715m Construction of a 960MW hydro power plant located at Polavaram. It will feature two units with a generation capacity of 80MW each. Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited has secured a contract for the electro-mechanical works of the project. Commissioning is anticipated by 2023/2024.

The company always takes a pragmatic and incremental approach. Your current level of automation determines what Op-tec Systems will recommend. Q

Tell me a bit about Op-tec and your role as Managing Director?

Op-tec Systems was founded by my predecessor in 1996. At the time there was still a large divide between what’s now called Operational Technology (OT) and Information Technology (IT) systems. Automation in the energy sector meant: proprietary distributed control systems for power generators; or remote terminal units with supervisory control and data acquisition systems for transmission and distribution.

At that time the value of data was yet to be fully realised – the OT controlling plants wasn’t connected to the IT controlling the business. Information was gathered and used at a local level to inform maintenance and optimise process control but integration into business systems was typically via reports scheduled to print at regular intervals or manually via spreadsheets. Op-tec specialised in helping sites with proprietary control systems migrate to open technology. Establishing solutions which allowed the continued use of existing control and instrumentation but with modern human machine interfaces, helped clients minimise capital expenditure needed while providing staff with the benefits of the Windows-based interfaces.

This work led into installation of historian servers to capture, process and make available the vast amount of data plants are now producing.

We developed a comprehensive Cyber Security Management System (CSMS) for a fine chemicals manufacturer and upper tier COMAH site. Liaising with the client’s IT department and engineering team we worked closely with stakeholders to integrate the CSMS tightly into existing policies and procedures. The HSE audits against it’s own guidance on cyber security, considering failings a safety concern. Having an effective CSMS in place has not only increased the safety and security of our clients’ facility but also provides the evidence needed to continue operating.

Since taking on the company I’ve continued to focus on open technology and built on our expertise in the latest open protocols. This has increased the number of markets we can target as smaller energy companies and manufacturers look to digitise their operations and integrate them with business systems.

How has Op-tec helped UK companies to optimise their operations?

We provide software and support services for control and automation. Depending on where a client’s technology is in its lifecycle, and their level of digitisation this can look very different. Some recent examples:

Because of the company’s background, many clients still rely on our knowledge and expertise with so-called ‘legacy systems’. Here we offer support to allow continued use of systems following the end of OEM support.

We supply ‘Proactive Maintenance’ agreements to owners of legacy systems, which combine service support with lifecycle management activities such as reverse engineering and documenting existing systems. This allows our clients to prolong the life of their existing automation, while preparing for either the incremental migration to new technology or a ‘rip and replace’ project. These activities typically fit alongside work to prolong the life of mechanical assets, enabling CAPEX spend to be delayed and a more strategic view to be taken in planning investment.

The operator of a modern biomass power station needed to demonstrate how plant performance varied with ambient conditions. After installation of a weather station we integrated it with their distributed control system, then configured it to monitor the data received and factor it into plant performance calculations. The result was an insight for both our client and the asset owner into the plant’s output relative to what was achievable on a particular day.

How has COVID-19 affected your business and the demand for Op-tec’s solutions?

In 2020, very little to be honest! We work with a range of companies across the process and manufacturing industries. The bulk of our clients continued to operate throughout 2020, albeit with fewer staff onsite. Much of the service and maintenance work we perform was still needed and we were largely able to deliver the projects in our pipeline even during periods where access to sites was restricted.

At a practical level, we’ve adapted processes and routines in response to government recommendations, client requests, and our own risk assessments. The way we service particular clients has changed, the situation seems to have forced the hand of those previously resisting the use of remote methods.

2021 is already looking very different for us. While some established clients are yet to restart projects placed on hold last year, we’re seeing significant demand from (typically) smaller manufacturing businesses. The pandemic has demonstrated not just the benefits of working remotely but also of enabling operations to run with less people, as staff have been put on furlough leave or had to self-isolate. This, combined with the existing trend towards increased digitisation, is driving demand for automation technologies. Small companies with no inhouse automation expertise are now looking to develop the skills and expertise we’ve been applying in the process industries for decades.

What opportunities does automation present in energy transition sectors and technologies?

Closing the loop on data analysis and continuous improvement. Most large companies in the energy sector will already be capturing a lot of process data and storing it. A smaller number are using machine learning algorithms to mine it for previously unknown relationships between data points and optimised configurations. The cost of implementing this technology has come down massively, to the point where almost every company should now at least be discussing when they will explore it. The journey towards a fully automated business will be unique to every business, the sooner you start the better.

When I talk about ‘fully automated’ businesses this doesn’t mean people will be redundant, it does mean our role will change significantly. Algorithms and robots will play an increasing role, handling routine and mundane tasks freeing us to concentrate on developing, improving and creating. Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies are now coming of age. The key to unlocking their potential – as many things – will be integrating them. These exciting technologies then allow us to see into the future and understand what it will take to get there. I get easily excited though… Ultimately the contribution of technology is limited by the freedoms we grant it. Energy sectors are highly regulated, for good reason. Issues like safety, security and responsibility must be fully considered when deploying automation. So while the opportunity is there to integrate and automate almost every part of a business the challenge on whether we should, and how, remains.

What’s next for Op-tec? What are some of your future plans for the business?

Many companies aren’t making the most of the technology they already have, before they’re buying the next generation of products. In the rush to benefit from the latest automation and in particular data, we forget human beings must be involved and empowered. This leads to a huge disconnect in most workforces: those who have access to data, and those who don’t.

The first group are typically office based, so must change into overalls to go out on plant. The second wear overalls and must don overshoes before visiting the office.

Those without access to data can be sceptical, sometimes fearful of technology – believing its purpose is to take their jobs. Those who have access to data often suffer from a lack of context the very people they are ‘short-cutting’ could provide.

We already help clients in this area, working with them to make relevant information available to the right people when they need it throughout the organisation. Demand here is increasing.

Technology to bridge this divide is well-proven and becoming more widely adopted, however companies are still struggling to adapt their operating processes to make the most of the opportunity.

We’re increasing our focus in this area, where we have considerable expertise. Clients old and new are being offered a review of their technology and processes, the resulting work recommends an automation strategy which details not only the technology which would best serve them but also how it can be implemented to maximise return on investment by avoiding these pitfalls.

Much of the technology being used by the sector is derived from the traditional offshore energy arena, particularly where subsea-related product solutions are required and, with well documented cable failures eating up substantial resources, both in terms of cash and time, high performance cable protection systems (CPS) can play a key role in failure mitigation.

The Calgary office of Add Energy’s Asset Integrity and Management (AIM) division has defied the global downturn to secure almost US$2.9m worth of new business contracts within six months of launching.

A key team of maintenance experts from Aberdeen and Houston have been on secondment to Calgary since the new office opened in March 2020 to share industry experience and support with new projects. It is expected that a further 10 roles could be created over the next 12 months as the business continues to expand – with additional graduate placements also to be created locally.

Ofgem gives green light to £12.7m hydrogen trial project Ofgem’s Network Innovation Competition has approved a first of its kind offline hydrogen research facility to understand how transmission assets could be used to transport hydrogen in the future to heat homes and deliver green energy to industry.

The facility will be built from a range of decommissioned assets, to create a representative transmission network. Blends of hydrogen up to 100% will then be tested at transmission pressures, to assess how the assets perform.

DNV GL, through this ground-breaking FutureGrid project, is looking forward to delivering a step change in knowledge and confidence in the transmission of pure and blended hydrogen both in new and existing pipeline systems. The hydrogen research facility will remain separate from the main National Transmission System, allowing for testing to be undertaken in a controlled environment, with no risk to the safety and reliability of the existing gas transmission network. World’s most extensive range of MCPs has been improved – again

E2S Warning Signals manufactures an extensive range of manual call points, MCP, designed to be installed in hazardous areas, primarily for the control of fire and gas detection and alarm systems. They are available in different enclosure materials: STEx in 316L stainless steel for use in the harshest of environments, GNEx in anti-static, UV-stable corrosion proof GRP, and BEx in corrosion proof marine grade copper free LM6 (A413) aluminium with a chromated and powder coat finish. Specifiers can choose the most suitable enclosure for the installation location and operating environment. There is a choice of four operating mechanisms. The traditional break glass has a lifting protective flap to minimise accidental operation featuring a safety membrane to ensure that no glass fragments are released during activation. A push button where the operating mechanism is again protected by a latching lift flap and a tool is required to reset the unit after operation, a momentary action push button unit and a dual action push button, which requires the operating mechanism to be twisted through 90° and then pushed to activate. All versions are SIL2 compliant to IEC 61508 (2010).

To reduce installation time and cost, there are dual cable entries in the top and another in the side of the enclosure. The backbox can be rotated through 180° to position the entries in the required direction. Two M20 stopping plugs, userdefinable in brass, stainless steel or nickel-plated brass are supplied as standard. ½ and ¾ inch NPT and M25 adaptors are also available. The latest updates include the BExCP3C and GNExCP6C call points, now with extended approval temperatures and a wider range of EOL and series resistor values, approved to IECEx and ATEX standards with additional PESO, INMETRO and Ex EAC approvals. The GNExCP7 Ex d units are globally approved to IECEx, ATEX, UL and cUL standard for all Zone 1, 2, 21 and 22 and Class I/II Div 2 installations with a variant approved to UL 38, manual signalling boxes for fire alarm systems and ULC-S528, manual stations for fire alarm systems. The flameproof STExCP8 is ATEX and IECEx approved for Zone 1 and 2 and also carries DNV type approval for exposed locations. For installation outside hazardous areas, IP66/IP67 weatherproof versions WP3, WP6 and WP7 call points units are now available.

HMi Elements offers computer solution for torque turn monitoring

HMi Elements is offering a universally compatible Zone 1 certified rig floor display (RFD) computer to help those carrying out and monitoring mission critical drilling operations. The HMi Elements model 470-Z1 is a drop-in ready RFD/HMI solution for integration with torque turn monitoring, tong control, casing running tools and casing inspection software. MAN Energy Solutions expands German CHP plant

Multiple mounting options such as a folding desktop stand, pedestal yoke mount, built-in VESA pattern for wall mounting on every unit and a panel mount option are possible.

MAN Energy Solutions has won an order to supply another MAN 12V35/44G TS gas engine to the public utilities (Stadtwerke) of the town of Schwäbisch Hall in southern Germany.

Additional features of the 470-Z1 include quick plug-in explosion-proof connectors that can be supplied to synchronise with HMi Elements’ existing cabling.

The genset will increase the output of the existing combined heat and power (CHP) plant to a total of 15MW, and will replace an existing, outdated engine.

The MAN 12V35/44G TS gas engine in the Schwäbisch Hall power

The new engine will deliver an electrical efficiency of 46%, compared to 39% for the existing unit, thus significantly increasing the efficiency of the entire plant; the overall efficiency of CHP operation will eventually exceed 90%. The new engine will be operated for around 4,000 hours a year using combined heat and power technology. Due to the existing, district-heating storage, it will also be possible to decouple it from the heating network and to be used to generate electricity solely. In addition to the engine and auxiliary systems, the scope of supply and services also includes an oxidation catalyst and the engineering of the heat extraction system. MAN Energy Solutions will remain a partner in the project after the planned commissioning in 2022 when the company’s global aftersales brand, MAN PrimeServ, will take over maintenance together with the staff of Stadtwerke Schwäbisch Hall.

Designed for today’s tasks but with tomorrow’s in mind, these exceptionally fuel-efficient, onshorecontrolled vessels will initially only utilise a skeleton crew onboard. In due course they will be capable of working with no personnel offshore while also consuming solely renewable fuel such as ammonia. The 78 metre vessels will supplement the current Armada fleet of nine 21 metre and 36 metre vessels, which are already in production and expected to be operational by early 2021. The first 78 metre vessel is expected to launch in mid-2022. The vessels are being designed and built by VARD, the international shipbuilding group headquartered in Norway.

Sennen wins funding to develop new technology

Technology company Sennen has secured grant funding to develop a new software feature that will help wind farm operators minimise lost revenue caused by wind turbine down time.

Lost production assessments are currently completed long after the event without access to detailed records of site status and activity. The calculations are used to assess contractual damages and bonus payments but do not provide a basis for improving O&M. Sennen proposes to radically change how lost production metrics are generated and used. First, Sennen will incorporate analysis of downtime into the routine marine control process. This links downtime directly to operations processes, such as fault repairs, annual services, crew transfers. Also by making the metrics available in real-time, Sennen can provide live interactive dashboards for the whole operations team. The Offshore Wind Growth Partnership (OWGP) awarded the grant to Sennen. Sennen’s lost production feature will integrate into users’ existing software and is expected to launch in Q1 2021.

TÜV SÜD to build UK’s first mobile facility for testing at hydrogen refuelling stations

TÜV SÜD National Engineering Laboratory has secured government funding to build the UK’s first mobile primary standard facility for testing hydrogen refuelling stations (HRS) to ensure they deliver the correct amount of fuel.

Funded by the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS), through the National Measurement System mechanism, the mobile facility will ensure accurate and consistent measurement of the dispensed quantity of fuel at HRS. This will assure drivers of hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) that financial transactions are correct and ensure accurate fiscal measurements for future taxation purposes. The international accuracy requirements for HRS fuel dispensers are mandated as ±2% for new installations. However, current ranges can be anywhere between ±1 – 10%. Furthermore, if a consumer disputes the dispensed volume, Trading Standards cannot investigate at present as the UK currently has no traceability chain that is linked to a physical primary standard for hydrogen, or the equipment and skills to test fuel dispensers. TÜV SÜD National Engineering Laboratory’s new mobile facility will provide this measurement traceability for the UK and the only practical, traceable capability to test hydrogen refuelling stations for dispensed quantity at the nozzle in the country. TÜV SÜD National Engineering Laboratory has selected Edinburghbased hydrogen technology specialist Logan Energy to construct the mobile test facility. Once completed, the new mobile primary standard facility will also be used to conduct a research campaign, which will be used to update industry guidance for the design, construction, modification and maintenance of HRS. This latest project supports TÜV SÜD National Engineering Laboratory’s ongoing work as part of the European Metrology Programme for Innovation and Research (EMPIR) Metrology for Hydrogen Vehicles programme, which is part of the world’s first large-scale research project to tackle hydrogen fuel measurement inaccuracy challenges.

International trade COVID-19 and how it’s changing the global event industry

Our strategic partner, Reed Exhibitions, has released white papers on how COVID-19 is impacting the global event industry. Involving nearly 3,000 exhibitors and over 9,000 attendees across 201 events and 17 Reed Exhibitions offices, the barometer reveals insights into the key concerns and behaviours of the company’s exhibitors and visitors, and tracks their changing attitudes to physical events and digital event technology over time.

Among its key findings, the Reed Exhibitions COVID-19 barometer reveals that:

COVID-19 is accelerating changes in consumer behaviour. 84% of visitors and exhibitors have tried at least one new digital service since lockdown.

• Acceptance of digital tools is increasing

over time. 43% believe that they can still carry out the majority of their event objectives online, although those that agree with this statement has risen significantly from 12% to 16%.

• Visitor agreement with all positive statements

around digital is increasing. 59% of visitors now say they would be likely to sign up to attend an online trade event, up from 57% in June. The percentage who believe that they can still carry out the majority of their event objectives online is also increasing, up from 52% to 57%.

• Exhibitors are more cautious about online

tools than visitors, and their attitudes remain steady. Responses reveal that one of their key concerns is that attendees will not engage in digital events – a belief not supported by attendee data.

• Engagement with digital activities increases

with familiarity and exposure. For example, participants in travel events, which have a long tradition of using online meeting tools to arrange physical meetings, are much more comfortable with the idea of using live meeting software in a digital environment.

• COVID-19 has not diminished the value

of in-person events for participants who are committed to returning as soon as restrictions are lifted. Throughout the period of the tracking survey, the importance of events has remained consistent for both exhibitors and visitors.

• While exhibitors remain sure they will spend

less while the pandemic continues to unfold, around two-thirds of exhibitors expect to return to normal levels (or spend more) once vaccines are developed.

• Customers are increasingly open to the idea

of engaging with digital alongside in-person events as they return. 65% of visitors and 57% of exhibitors believe digital will continue to work for events after COVID-19.

We launched into 2021 with a couple of fantastic events. Our first webinar for 2021 was Focussing on Multi-Sector Decommissioning on Tuesday 19 January. This multi-sector Jo Cam pbell webinar looked at key energy markets in the decommissioning industry, highlighting specific new business opportunities in the oil and gas, nuclear and wind sectors. On 26 January we partnered with PEEL Environmental to host an incredibly popular webinar looking at the decarbonisation plans for the North West of England. As the country pushes forward with a green industrial revolution designed to drive economic recovery while meeting net zero emission targets, this webinar looked at the range of projects taking place in the North West. We also heard the latest from Peel L&P on its strategic energy and resource hub Protos and the company’s plans for a new district heat network in Liverpool. They also presented an update on their pioneering waste plastic to hydrogen technology which Peel L&P is planning to roll out across the UK as part of its ambition to create plastic parks to deal with all kinds of plastic waste. Decarbonisation is of course the hot topic for 2021 with the run up to COP26 in Glasgow this November. The EIC will be hosting a number of webinars in the run up to COP26 under our Road to COP26 series. Spanish solar PV market dives head-first into 2021

Ellomay Capital connected the 300MW Talasol solar plant in Talaván to the grid and began hot commissioning tests at the start of the year. In Cáceres, Encavis started operations at the 300MW Talayuela project, the largest development in its portfolio. Enel Green Power also completed the La Vega and La Vega II plants totalling 86MW, in the municipality of Teba. The €60m plants are expected to produce 171GWh of electricity per year.

First unit at Barakah nuclear plant fully powers up

The first unit at the UAE’s Barakah nuclear plant is fully powered up. The milestone takes Barakah a step closer to the start of commercial operations early next year. Once Barakah’s four reactors are online, the plant will deliver clean, efficient and reliable electricity for decades, providing about a quarter of the country’s electricity and eliminating up to 21m tonnes of carbon emissions annually. That is comparable to taking 3.2m cars off the roads each year.

ADNOC awards Eni and PTTEP consortium offshore exploration block Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) has awarded exploration rights for Abu Dhabi’s Offshore Block 3 to a consortium led by subsidiaries of Italy’s Eni and Thailand’s PTT Exploration and Production Public Company (PTTEP). Eni will operate the exploration phase of the concession but PTTEP and Eni will collectively hold a 100% stake in the exploration phase. They will invest up to Dh1.51bn (US$412m) towards exploration and appraisal drilling, including a participation fee, to explore for and appraise oil and gas opportunities in Offshore Block 3.

Malaysia has extended its recovery movement control order (RMCO) throughout the country until 31 March 2021 as COVID-19 cases Azman surge to the highest levels Nasir since the start of the pandemic. Malaysia has also extended its entry and movement restrictions on all foreign nationals. Thailand recorded a new surge in cases in mid-December 2020 after months of successful containment. Thailand has extended its state of emergency to 28 February 2021, the extension follows the latest surge in COVID-19 cases in the country. Thailand authorities are allowing travellers from 56 locations to enter the country without visas. Indonesia extended the travel ban into the country for all foreign nationals until 14 January 2021. Exemption of the ban is given to diplomatic visa and official/service holders who are travelling to Indonesia for an official ministerial visit or higher. The country began its COVID-19 mass vaccination programme on 13 January 2021. Singapore is gradually reopening its border to allow safe travel in limited numbers. Short-term visitors, however, are still not allowed to enter Singapore, except those travelling under the Green/Fast Lane arrangements, the Air Travel Pass or with special prior approval. Vietnam has temporarily suspended entry into the country for all foreign nationals. There are a very small number of exceptions for diplomats on official business and certain high-skilled workers. The Philippines remains under Code Red Sublevel 2 which indicates ongoing local COVID-19 transmission with a greater number of cases than the government can address. Japan maintains its border enforcement measures which banned foreign nationals who have stayed in any of the 152 selected countries in the last 14 days from entering the country. All foreign nationals entering South Korea must submit a negative PCR confirmation issued within 72 hours of departure. India now allows all foreign nationals to enter the country through air or seaports on any visa type other than tourism. Arrivals must undergo a paid institutional quarantine of seven days, followed by a week-long home quarantine. The current travel restrictions in Australia only allow a few exempted categories to enter the country. Travellers who are not in an exempt category can request an individual exemption. New Zealand has not recorded any community transmission of COVID-19 since 18 November 2020. Amid fears over the new B.1.1.7 variant, the country has further tightened its border controls. Masdar, PT PJBI form JV to develop Indonesiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first floating solar power plant

Masdar Clean Energy (Masdar), a United Arab Emirates-based clean energy company, has formed a joint venture (JV) with PT Pembangkitan Jawa Bali (PJB), a subsidiary of Indonesiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s state electricity company PT PLN (Persero), for the development of the first floating solar plant in Indonesia, with a 145MW generation capacity. The JV, PT Pembangkitan Jawa Bali Masdar Solar Energi (PMSE) will develop the project in the West Java region and it is said to be the largest of its kind in South East Asia. The new JV has kick started the development of the project and targets to begin commercial operation in November 2022.

Petrobras releases 2021-25 business plan

The Brazilian national oil company plans to invest US$55bn over the next five years, according to its latest investment plan. The exploration and production segment has been allocated US$46bn, of which US$32bn will be invested in pre-salt assets. Petrobras plans to install 13 new FPSOs over the next five years, including units such as the P-78 and P-79 FPSOs, which are currently in the tendering stage. Decommissioning activities, meanwhile, will require US$4.6bn. The refining segment has been allocated US$3.7bn, which will be directed to the upgrade of diesel hydrotreatment units at the REDUC and REVAP refineries in addition to a new diesel HDT unit at the REPLAN refinery. Petrobras has not allocated funds to investment in the renewables sector.

Brazilian energy auctions confirmed for 2021

The Mines and Energy Ministry has announced that the A-3/A-4 and A-5/A-6 energy auctions will take place in June and September 2021, respectively. The auctions are an opportunity for developers in the conventional power and renewables sectors to obtain long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) with local distributors. These will be the first auctions since 2019, as the COVID-19 outbreak led to the cancellation of energy auctions scheduled for 2020.
