Sector analysis Malaysia’s oil and gas market

With 96.6Tcf of proven natural gas reserves, Malaysia is the second largest gas producer in Asia Pacific (BP Statistical Review 2018) as well as the world’s third largest exporter of LNG after Qatar and Australia. Malaysia exported 26.4m tonnes of LNG in 2017, accounting for 9% of the world’s total LNG exports. Development of fields including the K5 gas field, the NC3, NC8 and Kasawari gas fields, the Limbayong oil and gas field and the Pegaga gas field, will increase Malaysia’s gas production by about 1.7Bcf/d by 2022. The K5 gas field, discovered in 1970 in the South China Sea offshore Sarawak, is estimated to have large gas reserves of 21Tcf with 4Tcf of recoverable resources. Unlocking a commercial development at K5, which contains up to 70% carbon dioxide, could prove pivotal to the future exploitation of other sour gas fields in Malaysian waters.

Readily available feedstock and its strategic geographical location are making Malaysia a viable downstream hub in the region. Development of the multi-billiondollar Pengerang Integrated Complex is one of the largest industrial developments in this region, as well as PETRONAS’ largest downstream investment to date. The complex houses an integrated oil refinery, naphtha cracker and petrochemical plants as well as an LNG regasification terminal, and crude and LNG storage facilities. Full completion of the complex is expected to go beyond 2035 and it will not only meet domestic demand but is also expected to capitalise on the growing demand for petrochemical products in Asia in the next 20 years.

Under its Economic Transformation Programme, the government aims to strengthen the oil, gas and energy value chain by transforming Malaysia into the regional O&G hub by 2020. Malaysia has a large local oil and gas business community with significant experience and expertise. The Malaysian government actively promotes Malaysian capabilities and encourages joint ventures between international and local companies. International companies have made Malaysia their regional hub over the years. For instance, McDermott, Subsea7 and TechnipFMC have relocated regional hubs to Malaysia from Singapore. Other key players such as Aker Solutions and Petrofac have established Malaysia as regional hubs to support their Asia Pacific operations.

EIC Malaysia Country Report coming soon © 2003-2019 Shutterstock, Inc

The country’s mature oil fields still provide opportunities for future growth. Malaysia is the fourth largest oil producer in Asia Pacific with 3.6Bbbl of proven oil reserves. Total oil production has reduced by 10% since its peak production of 778,000bbl/d in 2004, however, innovative technologies are being applied to increase depleting oil production. Potential upstream projects are focused on maximising production of existing fields through innovative solutions for marginal fields, deepwater development, enhanced oil recovery projects as well as increasing exploration activities. Future activity in the sector will also provide abundant opportunities in decommissioning, with a total of 38 platforms, 50 pipelines and 291 wells to be plugged and abandoned by 2023. PETRONAS’ aspirations towards cost efficient decommissioning focuses on disruptive technology, including rig-to-reef methods.

The EIC will shortly be releasing its next Country Report, focusing on Malaysia. It will highlight the major projects in planning and under development across the oil and gas, power, nuclear and renewable sectors and provide analysis of the political, economic, social and technological factors to consider in the market. It also explains how to go about doing business in the country and various market entry considerations in order to take advantage of the sizeable opportunities available across Malaysia’s energy industry. One-to-one with Paul

Ashton Managing Director Powertherm

Powertherm is a multi-discipline company which provides services and solutions to the power generation and petrochemical sectors. Its range of services include: thermal and acoustic insulation; scaffold and rope access; industrial coatings; electrical trace heating; and refractory lining. In addition to its services the company also supplies the following insulation solutions: flexible insulation products, including exhaust covers; turbine covers; and fabric expansion joints. As well as cladding support solutions including SRS – a CUI prevention system; DUK – a system which caters for thermal movement and wind loads on equipment and a full range of piping clamp bands and boiler support systems.

Q A

How did Powertherm start out? The business was established in 1989 to initially provide thermal and acoustic insulation services. In the early days we predominantly focused on providing our services to the UK fleet of coal-fired power stations. Over time the UK energy market has shifted and Powertherm has had to adapt its approach, moving from providing services for the repair and maintenance of coal-fired plants, to the retrofitting of various technologies to reduce the emissions on coal-fired plants, to the building of new combined cycle gas turbines, energy from waste, biomass and gasification power plants.

Q

Can you tell our readers about Powertherm’s space ring system?

Our Space Ring System (SRS) is a simple solution to combat corrosion under insulation (CUI). The way it works is to transfer the load of the external cladding, from the soft often friable insulation, to the underlying piping or equipment making the insulation system significantly stronger. It also incorporates a drying and drainage mechanism that, in the unlikely event of damage, ensures the underlying piping or equipment remains completely dry.

A

Q

Why did you decide to develop a new product for CUI?

A

We could see the flaws in what was available in the marketplace. Most other systems are based around either making the insulation system stronger or allowed drainage of moisture should the insulation become wet. None of the systems we found did both and certainly none offered drying capabilities and were also inspection friendly like SRS.

Q

Powertherm has worked on projects for BP, Chevron, Conoco and Texaco – what’s the secret to winning work with major players?

With blue chip clients you’re often dealing with purchasing professionals who are very skilled at what they do but are unlikely to understand in any real detail the services you provide. Therefore, submitting complicit bids, being ISO registered and having all the correct paperwork and records available is hugely important – the more information you can give them the more comfortable they’ll feel. Also, don’t be afraid to challenge them – if the specification they’ve given you is antiquated or what they’re proposing just doesn’t work in the real world then tell them the reasons why.

Q

How did you go from providing just insulation to such a range of industrial solutions?

A

We saw the benefits to our clients of providing a multi-discipline service and understood why having a single source for several services could only make their life easier. We identified the services which would add synergistic value to or current offering, from there we sought out the most skilled and technically competent people we could find and, once onboard, set about integrating them into the team.

Honestly, at times, it’s been difficult and frustrating. It’s hard trying to integrate people into the business and to help them understand the way we do things when they’re coming from a company with cultures and values unlike ours, while providing services that are very different.

Having said that, in a relatively short time frame you start to see more similarities than differences and we have definitely benefited as a business by learning new things from the incoming people. When things do start to go right, I personally get a huge amount of satisfaction from seeing those people become part of the team and start working in the ‘Powertherm way’.

Member news Amarinth secures Iraq Rumaila oil field order

Suffolk-based pump manufacturer Amarinth has secured its first order from Iraq Gates Contracting Company for US$410K of API 610 OH1 pumps for the Rumaila oil field in Iraq.

The company will deliver 10 of the pumps from the UK with a lead time of 22 weeks. The short time frame leaves Amarinth with just 20 weeks for the design, manufacture and testing of the pumps and seal support systems, including full documentation and NACE certification for all process wetted parts.

Atlas Copco has announced the addition of nine energy-efficient, high capacity models to its NGP+ nitrogen generators range. The expanded range now offers the capability to deliver onsite nitrogen at flows ranging from 5.2l/s to 797l/s, with purity levels up to 99.999% and a potential 50% reduction in running costs. Mark Ranger, UK Business Line Manager for Oil-free Air at Atlas Copco Compressors, said, ‘The latest NGP+ generators are a real game changer. For instance, in specific applications, such as the oil and gas industry that typically require 95 to 99% nitrogen purity, reported gas price decreases of as much as 75% have been achieved.’

Onsite NGP+ generators offer a more sustainable and cost-efficient solution than reliance on gas delivered in cylinders or bulk liquid supply, which requires transport, handling and resulting administration. Operating with the latest pressure swing adsorption technology, the plug-and-play generators, when connected to an existing clean, dry compressed air installation, offer an independent, reliable and flexible supply of premium grade nitrogen at the highest purity levels. The NGP+ generators complement Atlas Copco’s existing range of onsite gas solutions, including both nitrogen and oxygen generators. Its nitrogen generators are available in both membrane and pressure swing adsorption technologies and are offered as low-investment entry models and high-end versions that both offer low total cost of ownership.

Coretrax reports 40% business growth in the Middle East

Independent wellbore clean-up and abandonment specialist Coretrax has achieved a 40% growth in Middle East business in 2018. The company, which opened a base in Saudi Arabia in 2014, has seen a steady uptake in activity with a growing demand for its wellbore clean up products which provide substantial operational savings to its global customers. Coretrax currently has bases in Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Kuwait and employs more than 50 personnel across the Middle East. Elliot McDonough, Coretrax Country Manager – Saudi Arabia said, ‘As an independent service company, Coretrax has strengthened its position in the Middle East thanks to our culture of developing close and trusted relationships with local operators. We pride ourselves on listening to their needs and delivering workable solutions which has proved vital to our growth.’ Since January 2018, the company has successfully completed more than 67 well runs of its CX-LTTT (HD) which saved a Saudi Arabian operator more than 3,500 hours and US$9.2m. The CX-LTTT (HD) is a cement clean-out tool which provides a one-trip system to allow inflow testing operations to be completed in the same run as excess cement in the liner is drilled out – eliminating the need for an additional trip in-hole and saving on average 30 hours of rig time. The tool minimises the damage to a packer and can achieve high flow rates which is essential for recovering debris out of hole.

KOSO Kent Introl manufactures its largest butterfly valve to date

KOSO Kent Introl has designed and manufactured its largest ever butterfly valve for Copenhagen’s £59m bio-fuel plant project. The 48” butterfly valve was purchased by Danish power company HOFOR, whose vision is to create sustainable, climate-friendly and environmentally-safe solutions. The 48” Rotrol high-performance butterfly valve, along with two-off 32” butterfly valves, were tailor-made for a biomass boiler application to replace an old 600MW coal-fired plant. This will contribute to an annual CO2 emission reduction of 1.2m tonnes, bolstering Copenhagen’s aim to become the world’s first carbonneutral capital by 2025. KOSO Kent Introl’s largest ever valve weighs in at 3,675kg. Combined with the 482kg ASME 300 test flanges, it comes to an overall weight of more than four tonnes. The valve features a profiled vane that dissipates energy across large pressure drops, thus reducing the chance of cavitation. Its opening operates within a range of 11 to 86 degrees, which compares to the 10 to 60 degrees of opening that a traditional butterfly valve operates within.

The Snorre field Illustration copyright Equinor

MTE wins order for Snorre Expansion project Mech-Tool Engineering Ltd (MTE) has secured a contract with one of Norway’s leading engineering companies Aibel AS for the Snorre Expansion project.

The contract will see MTE providing its world-class, bespoke products including fire and blast wall panels as well as wind and heatshields for use on Equinor’s Snorre field.

Rotork’s CMA range expands for improved control valve automation

Rotork has extended its range of compact modulating actuators (CMAs) with new sizes specifically designed for reliable automation of larger linear control valves.

Located in the North Sea, the Snorre project has recently received an investment of £1.7bn which will extend the field’s life to 2040. Speaking about the contract win, Anthony Jones, Managing Director at MTE said, ‘The awarding of this contract with Aibel AS is true testament to MTE’s industry leading reputation of designing and manufacturing world class heatshields, windshields and fire and blast wall panels. MTE has been supplying services and products for some of the world’s biggest oil and gas projects for over 45 years thanks to our team of engineering experts.’

The combined performance of the CMA and the larger CVA ranges enables Rotork’s innovative electrical control valve actuation technologies to be applied to process control applications of virtually any size. CMAs are robust enough to handle extreme temperature swings, corrosive environments and are also available for explosionproof areas. The CML-1500 and CML-3000 models, including those with hazardous area approvals, are watertight to IP68 for temporary submersion (7 metres, 72 hours). The optional reserve power pack uses supercapacitors to provide the actuator with enough stored energy to perform predetermined action on mains power failure, such as moving to the fully closed position, fully open position or anywhere in between. Manual operation is available as standard. The CMA is a low power consumption solution (less than 1 watt at standby) for automation in established or remote installations such as oil installations and offshore facilities where there are pneumatic limitations. The design allows for solar powered and battery backup supplies in remote locations where electric energy consumption is a concern and power is often provided through solar collection for the operation of remote automated critical systems such as wellheads.

Spotlight on technology Green’s

www.greenspower.co.uk

HIGH PERFORMANCE BOILER TUBE BENDING MACHINE Green’s is one of Europe’s largest manufacturers of boiler equipment and services. Two hundred years of knowledge and skill goes into everything it produces. Its products have been installed globally helping companies in the energy, biomass and energy from waste sectors to maximise energy usage and cut costs.

Heat recovery

In the energy sector heat recovery has become an increasingly important issue in reducing flue gas temperatures with companies investing more in their boiler equipment to improve plant efficiency.

Increasing efficiency through enhanced automation

Green’s investment in a CNC multi axis, mandrel and boost bending machine enables production of tube heat exchangers ranging from 20mmØ to 114mmØ and the capability to produce bends with less than 1D centres while increasing efficiency through enhanced automation and demonstrates further its commitment to invest in production to improve productivity and support customer’s requirements. Manufacturing tube coils with a close tube pitch

The challenge with manufacturing tube heat exchangers is being able to manufacture tube coils with a close tube pitch. The tube pitch on a Green’s economiser is very dependent on how tight the bend radius can be manufactured, typically 1 x diameter. A skilled coded welder is then required ‘by hand’ to weld each tube bend to each tube length, which requires weeks in production when an economiser typically has over 800 tubes. Also, the tube diameter on a Green’s economiser can range from 20-80mm and be manufactured in carbon steel or stainless steel, depending on the output of the unit and the environment in which it will be operating. This new tube manipulation technology means that Green’s can significantly improve the design of heat exchanger units, increase the productivity of an economiser unit in production and improve the quality by having less welded joints. UK and Europe news Regional update

We wrapped up 2018 in December (excuse the unintentional pun) with two great events: the Horizon Nuclear Power – Opportunities at Wylfa Terri S ylveste r Newydd business presentation was hugely popular with 140+ delegates attending at the Nuclear AMRC in Sheffield. The Enablers for Digital Transformation breakfast briefing also generated lots of interest in Aberdeen with speakers from CENCIS, Emerson, OGIC, Repsol Sinopec and Tampnet sharing their insights. We kick off the new year with a business presentation from WorleyParsons in Aberdeen on 17 January which will outline its supplier requirements for a rapidly growing project portfolio; Members’ Updates in both the north and the south providing an update of global trends (8 and 10 January, respectively) and a Networking Evening in London on 23 January providing the opportunity to meet and make contacts across the industry in an informal setting with drinks and bar snacks served.

Offshore section of the TurkStream pipeline completed

Russia and Turkey announced the completion of the TurkStream pipeline’s offshore section. Construction of the pipeline connecting Russia and Europe via Turkey is in the final stage of development and ahead of schedule, according to both countries. The 31.5Bcm capacity pipeline with a length of 930km is scheduled to enter operations at the end of 2019. Construction of the onshore section will be led by Turkey’s state-owned operator Botas.

Dunkirk offshore wind tender underway

The French government opened the bidding process for the 500MW Dunkirk offshore wind farm in November 2018. Ten companies are pre-selected for the tender, which include Elicio, Equinor and Vattenfall. DEME Group, Shell and Quadran Energies Marines have formed a joint venture for the tender, called Moulins de Flandres. Developers have four months to submit a final bid for the project.

The UK government announced the allocation of £60m of funding for the next contracts for difference (CfD) round to be held in May 2019. The auction round is expected to focus predominantly on offshore wind and small island onshore wind. Industry stakeholders have raised doubts over whether the budget will be sufficient to support the sector’s target of 30GW installed by 2030.

Middle East news Regional update

Let me take this opportunity to wish all our members a very happy and prosperous New Year. Certainly, if one reflects on the high level of activity which was experienced at Terry W illis ADIPEC back in November, then we can be confident that 2019 will most certainly be a positive year for everybody. Unfortunately, this will be my penultimate contribution as it is now common knowledge that I will be retiring at the end of next month after almost exactly 15 years since I first established the EIC’s Dubai office. While there will be a fair degree of reflection, it is important to acknowledge where we are today and what we continue to offer to our valued members, moving forward into this new year. In the meantime, the all important oil price continues to fluctuate due to a number of factors, not least because of the US shale producers plus stocks increasing while demand remains relatively flat. However, most of the pundits believe that demand will gradually increase over the next twelve months which will in turn strengthen the price and thus allow investors to make positive decisions for the future. Naturally, geo-political developments also have an effect on the market, the main one being the US sanctions on Iran plus the on-going unrest in Yemen, Syria and Libya. Our Middle East version of EICAssetMap was formally launched at ADIPEC and is proving popular with those members who follow the spending of operating expenditure for their business source. Just like its UK, Norway and Asia Pacific siblings, the Middle East version covers all the operating plants across the GCC (minus Saudi Arabia, which is coming soon) to be found not only in oil and gas, upstream, midstream and downstream but also on the power side along with renewables and nuclear. Should you wish to learn more and/or want to see a demonstration, then please don’t hesitate to contact Fabrice or Jude at the office. On the events side of things, January is the traditional time for the World Future Energy Summit which takes place in Abu Dhabi from the 14th to the 17th. This event is slowly becoming the ‘ADIPEC’ of the renewable and clean energy sector. Besides attracting the world’s leading exponents of clean energy, it also provides a platform for innovators to add their ideas and inventions to the global sustainable energy sector. With this in mind, please be aware that the EIC has recently introduced a membership category that is dedicated to the renewables space. More details can be provided by any member of our membership team. Terry Willis, Director, Middle East, Africa & CIS terry.willis@the-eic.com Get in touch Share your news and views...

Bolsonaro picks new Petrobras CEO

Jair Bolsonaro, elected as Brazil’s new president last October, has announced a new chief executive for the country’s national oil player Petrobras. Roberto Castello Branco will occupy the company’s top position, succeeding Ivan Monteiro. An economist who worked for the Brazilian mining giant Vale for 15 years and previously served as a member of Petrobras’ board of directors, Castello Branco is set to continue the agenda pursued by the state-run company under the previous Temer administration. His work will likely keep the oil-rich pre-salt area as the focus of Petrobras’ exploration and production efforts, while pushing ahead with the company’s divestment plans.

Guyana halts E&P licensing for contracts overhaul

In a bid to make Guyana’s E&P acreage more attractive to oil and gas players and boost revenues, the government temporarily suspended the licensing of E&P areas while it carries out changes in contractual terms for production-sharing agreements. It is understood that existing contracts, such as the one awarded to ExxonMobil for the massive Stabroek block, will not be affected.

INTERVIEW

with David Gibbons-Wood Programme Lead Fit4Energy, Robert Gordon University The Fit4Energy (F4E) programme has been developed by Robert Gordon University in close collaboration with the EIC and Opportunity North East (ONE). Robert Gordon University is known globally for the contribution it makes to the energy sector. As a local and global provider, its brand is well-recognised and highly trusted by companies in both the conventional and renewable industries. Its alumni can be found in all energy sector roles with qualifications from graduate apprentice to MBA Oil and Gas. F4E is about taking that expertise directly into the company to support scaling-up.

Q

Can you tell our readers about the new F4E programme?

F4E is a specialist programme designed to help businesses plan and deliver growth by equipping them with skills and knowledge specific to the energy sector. Our delivery team has years of experience in different energy sector fields.

A

Q A

Our programme has two unique elements. Firstly, those that successfully complete it will gain industry wide recognition in the form of the F4E approval stamp. Secondly, our programme is based on implementation, with companies being supported in turning the learning into action plans and execution through follow up workshops. For example, many companies don’t have a growth relevant strategy but our programme will ensure that after a 10 week course they will through a support process.

To get F4E approval you must do eight courses but at only £3,700 for the eight-course programme that reflects tremendous value for money.

Q

And who should sign up?

A

F4E is aimed at any company with a growth ambition. It is perhaps most appropriate for small to medium-sized enterprises wishing to scale-up. However, larger businesses seeking evidence and recognition for their contribution to the supply chain will also benefit from gaining F4E approval. F4E is a programme for the business not the individual, no one person needs to attend all courses. Therefore, senior managers, technical staff or support staff in a range of different roles can each attend different courses as they feel best meets the company’s objectives.

And what will delegates learn?

The two core course strategies are: Markets and Business Planning and Skills Development for Scale-Up. After completing the courses companies can choose from Diversification, Innovation, Process and Cost Optimisation, Collaboration and Organisational Culture, Technology, Finance and Risk, Marketing and Sales, Pricing Strategies, and Exporting Strategies and International Markets.

Ultimately, the programme is open to any business looking to reignite their or their employees’ focus, drive the organisation forward or effectively plan and manage expansion.

Q

What is F4E approval?

A

F4E approval will evidence that your company is serious about its contribution to the energy sector. It will recognise the value you can bring and your capacity to scale.

It will say to an operator or international client that you have processes, procedure and strategies in place that will make you able to deliver large international projects. It evidences that you have strategically prepared for modern invitations to tender and your core strengths will be able to deliver on substantial contracts.

The approval has been developed together with the EIC. We also connect with enterprise agencies such as SMAS, SDI and OGIC. Perhaps most importantly it has gained the support of private sector firms like Wood and sector organisations such as Oil and Gas UK.

Q

What do you envisage F4E approved companies going on to do?

A

F4E’s impacts and outputs: Grow: deliver a growth strategy that will maximise business performance. Optimise: understand how to improve workflow and reduce waste leading to cost and time savings. Innovate: implement effective tools and techniques to identify innovations that will benefit customers. Export: understand the central marketing and legal issues involved in trading internationally. Collaborate: navigate and correctly identify relevant support agencies and learn from other organisations across the UK energy sector.
