Sector analysis Country profile: South Africa

South Africa continues to be one of the most accessible and well-regulated entry points to the African continent. In addition to being Africa’s second-largest economy, it is the most globally integrated in terms of capital and trade flows, and is well placed to benefit from growth in Africa and the broader global economic recovery. The South African government is optimistic that improved electricity availability should help the country’s economic growth recover gradually over the medium-term. Power utility Eskom has bolstered its supply with the introduction of new generating capacity and believes that better management of its maintenance schedule, combined with new capacity, should further improve the outlook for supply and demand. Medium-term interventions to alleviate electricity supply constraints include private sector investment in renewable energy, a major expansion of independent power producer (IPP) baseload capacity and a gas-to-power IPP programme. The introduction of supply from private producers has helped to prevent or delay load-shedding, while also replacing expensive diesel and coal fuel costs that would have been incurred at Eskom power stations. Already the continent’s largest producer of renewable energy, South Africa is moving to further reduce its reliance on hydrocarbons by expanding private sector investments in solar and wind projects and introducing biofuels. Renewable power sources account for 5% of South Africa’s installed capacity, from a baseline of zero in 2010. This has led South Africa to become the largest wind energy producer on the continent and to rank among the top-10 countries globally for installed, utility-scale solar photovoltaic capacity. South Africa’s renewable power programme is well-placed to drive the economy forward.

Sarah

Lister

The implementation of the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) has been a critical component of the country’s push to improve supply, opening up space for private sector-led renewable energy. The plan calls for coalfired electricity to account for less than 15% of all new generation capacity added through to 2030, and for it to provide under 50% of the total grid capacity. Renewables are set to take up 42% of all new generation capacity, which would see the construction of 9.6GW of nuclear energy and 11.4GW of renewables, including solar and wind, by 2030. The IRP marks a clear departure from the country’s traditional reliance on coal-fired power. Natural gas will also play a larger role, through both imports by pipeline and proposed liquefied natural gas terminals, as well as from domestically produced sources including shale gas and coal-bed methane reserves. Locally sourcing significant amounts of fossil fuels other than coal seems unlikely in the short term. Over the longer-term, South Africa is aiming to invest in nuclear energy capacity. The government’s interest in nuclear energy is strong and agreements have already been signed with several vendor countries that have expressed interest in a new nuclear programme, including the US, China, France, Russia and South Korea. However, the initiative is still in the early stages and there isn’t certainty on how the programme will proceed. Sarah Lister Sector Analyst (Power & CCS) info@the-eic.com

Inside this issue... At the end of April we launched our special Survive and Thrive Insight Report at a series of breakfast briefings led by EIC CEO Stuart Broadley in Aberdeen, Teesside and London. This initiative was borne out of Stuart’s efforts to meet with as many EIC member companies as possible during his first few months in post. Within his first 120 days he had met with 120 EIC members. These organisations’ determination to innovate, prosper and grow, in spite of and increasingly because of the challenging markets was truly inspiring. From these meetings it became apparent that there were common factors that led to their success. We realised that if these strategies and best practices were identified and shared with the wider industry they could help UK businesses to flourish, even during the downturn. As such, structured, in-depth interviews were organised with 26 EIC member companies, of all sizes – ranging from those with less than 10 employees to those with thousands of workers spread across the globe – and representing all segments of the energy industry: oil and gas, power, nuclear and renewables. The strategies for success identified in the report are proven, with the figures in place to back this up – the savings and new orders won by these 26 companies through their survive and thrive strategies, normally from just one or two customers each, come to well over £550m. They could be working for your business too. We’ll be sharing two company success stories with you every month in Inside Energy, starting with Airswift and ALE. Turn to pages 4 and 5 to find out about the incredible work they’ve done to thrive during these tough times. The full Survive and Thrive Insight Report is free for all EIC member companies and available for purchase by non-members, please contact me at my email below for more details. This month’s sector analysis (opposite) profiles South Africa’s energy industry and marks the launch of a new product line for the EIC. Last month we unveiled our first ever EIC Country Report, focusing on South Africa. This EIC Country Report will give you all the information you need to decide whether or not South Africa should form part of your company’s export journey. Members can download the report free of charge by logging onto EICDataStream. If you’re not a member but thinking of making South Africa the next destination for your business, please contact EIC Head of Power, Nuclear & Renewables Amisha Patel (amisha.patel@the-eic. com) to buy your copy. As readers of last month’s Inside Energy will know, long-term EIC Board Member Ron Coultrup sadly passed away on 24 February aged 87. We remember Ron’s life on page 7. A huge supporter of the UK energy supply chain and a very dear member of the EIC team, he will be greatly missed by all who knew him. EIC Survive and Airswift Unique, packaged ‘data, analytics and expertise’ to optimise recruitment decisions

How is Airswift thriving?

Responding to an industry requirement, Airswift teamed up with a technology solutions provider to create Total Talent Insights (TTI), an analytical tool that provides key workforce information for customers. TTI enables clients to make critical business decisions, especially important during the oil and gas industry downturn.

The challenge

The recent crisis in the oil and gas sector had a significant impact on Airswift’s key clients. Like the many other companies hit hard, they were seeking increased efficiency and productivity, but at lower costs. However, the necessary information about the talent market to make sound decisions related to pay, availability and benefits is scarce, unstructured and the information available is often not backed up by objective data. Innovation was needed to provide essential information, transparently, so the right decisions could be made.

The solution

Airswift responded to this challenge by innovating. The company started a collaboration with a digital solutions provider to develop an analytical tool that enabled clients to obtain the workforce information they needed for their decision-making process.

Story type: #innovation #collaboration #technology Benefits: Workforce efficiency: 20-25% improvement. Cost saving: US$6.4m for one client. Key findings: For the industry: • Innovative solutions often require collaboration to unlock new technologies and potential.

This tool, named Total Talent Insights, is a ready-to-use, algorithmprotected system that makes the entire workforce visible to the client by allowing them to access internal and external data on talent availability, location, cost and capability, based on industry benchmarks as well as data uploaded by the clients themselves. This tool was introduced to the market via a soft launch in the first quarter of 2016, with a full launch planned for Q2 2017. Airswift customers interested in the system can sign up to a single region or a specific sector of the tool. Access is provided via membership or a licence fee. A unique package of tools, TTI provides benefits such as cost savings and increased productivity. The system has made possible, on average, a 5-8% reduction in contractor and contingent labour costs when it is actively used. In the case of a copper smelter company, TTI has led to a 20% improvement in productivity, while at an oil sands operation a 25% increase in productivity was achieved. A global oil and gas company using TTI is saving US$6.4m annually through 850 contractor rate adjustments averaging 9.5%. Airswift recognises that TTI is a product that goes beyond the oil and gas industry. Consultancy options are currently being considered to ensure that the benefits from TTI are maximised for clients.

ALE ALE diversifies from oil and gas heavy transport to become turnkey contractor for wind power

Story type: #diversification #innovation Benefits: Expected order intake £45m. Key findings: For the industry: • Debt capacity is essential to react to opportunities quickly.

How is ALE thriving?

During the downturn in the oil and gas sector ALE has diversified its offering by exploring the opportunities available in the onshore wind segment. The company’s innovation was highlighted by offering an outsourced turnkey solution for developers and OEMs in the wind market.

The challenge

Like most in the supply chain ALE’s activity within oil and gas related projects was significantly impacted by the fall in oil prices. Although the company benefited from a one-two year backlog of oil and gas projects, the slowdown in oil and gas projects left ALE looking for new sources of revenue.

The solution

One of ALE’s core strengths is its low leverage and debt capacity, which makes it able to react quickly and flexibly to events such as industry downturns. Not being highly indebted also allows the company to adapt to industry trends and technology shifts. This was the case when ALE made the decision to diversify into wind power projects. The company has embraced innovation, offering a complete transport, construction and installation ‘TCI’ package for onshore wind farms worldwide. Sign up for the EICOnline newsletter

ALE is now expanding this further to include the necessary civil engineering and site preparation, aiming to become a one-stop-shop for developers and OEMs, a wind farm turnkey solution if you like. ALE is now in final discussions on a £45m turnkey contract in the wind segment. Another factor that contributes to the company’s success in the downturn is its strategy of focusing on a niche market segment for crane capacity of greater than 500 tonnes. By acquiring very large cranes and leasing smaller cranes as needed, the company stands out from the competition. Today, 50% of ALE’s revenue comes from the >500 tonne market.

About ALE

Founded in 1983 and present in 35 countries through autonomous business units, ALE Heavylift specialises in handling, transportation and installation services for heavy and indivisible loads. The multinational company portfolio extends to various industrial sectors including oil and gas, petrochemicals, conventional power, renewables, infrastructure, civil, ports, shipyards, nuclear and minerals.

• Offer complete solutions to your customer, a one-stop-shop instead of separate service providers, to differentiate your offering. • Focus on niche sectors. For the government: • Provide support to indebted companies (eg special credit lines) to help the industry overcome downturns. Government support? ALE has not received any government support but now hears UK Export Credit readily discussed in overseas markets. ALE at a glance Key products and service: heavy lifting and transportation. Main sectors: oil and gas, power, civil and renewables. Headquarters: Stafford, UK. Year established: 1983. Number of employees: 1,800. Revenue: US$350m.

Clients are actively looking for dynamic, innovative supply chain partners that will bring real value to their projects. By diversifying our services and focused investment in R&D, we provide our clients with innovative solutions and best in class service so we can continue to grow as leaders in the heavylifting industry. In memory of Ron Coultrup

As briefly mentioned in the April edition of Inside Energy, we were very sorry to hear of the recent death of Ron Coultrup, a valued long-term member of the EIC Board and a great supporter of the UK energy supply chain.

Ron’s contribution to the EIC cannot be overstated. With his wife and fellow member of the EIC Board, Christine, they played a vital role in so many things – not least making the connections that enabled Lord Patrick Jenkin to agree to be the first EIC President in 2009. Both Ron and Christine had limitless reserves of enthusiasm for the EIC and did much to promote it.

Ron’s art of chairing such meetings was to get people to give up information they had – sometimes throwing out false data because there was usually someone who could not resist correcting him! Then, a staff member, Alan Lewendon, started what has now become EICDataStream. This provided the information electronically, so the committees died.

Ron’s involvement with the EIC can be traced back over 40 years to 1974, when the organisation was still known as the Council of British Manufacturers of Petroleum Equipment (CBMPE). Ron joined a committee which mainly comprised engineering contractors, who discussed the problems they were facing at the time, but the last item on the agenda was an exchange of information on projects that had just or were just about to be awarded – absolute diamonds for a salesman! Over time, Ron managed to get the latter item higher up the agenda and unlocked even more information.

Ron spent many years supporting the EIC as a Director, serving on the Finance Committee and also participating in trade missions. Originally, most outward missions were organised by Chambers of Commerce, but the key advantage of EIC missions was that they were vertical missions with all the members targeting the same clients. Ron had especially good reason to remember one such mission, when in 1979 he flew from Kuwait to Iran and was promptly arrested by the Revolutionary Guards. On another occasion, when attending an EIC mission to Algeria with an eminent government minister present, Ron was very unimpressed that the government minister was recalled to London and just left the Algerian hosts in the lurch!

One of Ron’s early successes was to persuade the board to approve hiring a salesman to recruit new members. Also, in the early 80s, Ron was instrumental in setting up the marketing committees. Of these, the Overseas Committee was the strongest and frequently Ron chaired their meetings. The aim was to talk about which projects were proceeding, or in the offing, and who the personnel involved on each project were. Sign up for the EICOnline newsletter

In more recent times Ron and Christine provided an invaluable link with the roots and ethos of the EIC. Ron stood down as an EIC Director in 2008, but both he and Christine continued as Honorary Vice-Presidents. Follow @TheEICEnergy

As well as your commercial courses, a big focus for TTE is its apprentice programme. Why should companies employ an apprentice?

A

TTE has a well-established reputation for delivering high quality apprenticeships. We are experienced in providing apprentices with tailored skills and competencies required to meet the needs of employers.

Can you talk us through the different courses you provide and which would be of most interest to other EIC members?

TTE is accredited by Ofsted as a ‘Good’ provider and is on the Register of Apprenticeship Training Providers (RoATP) for the Apprenticeship Levy. We offer a range of apprenticeships covering electrical, mechanical, instrumentation, fabrication and welding, process and laboratory disciplines. We are proud to support local and national businesses that are developing the skilled and motivated workforce that will enable businesses to succeed.

Q

What has been your personal highlight from the last year?

There were a number of highlights in the past year: retraining former SSI workers for new opportunities, placing 10 trainees with the newly formed British Steel and having Middlesbrough FC’s Emilio Nsue visit a group of Equatorial Guinean technicians on their national independence day.

A

The benefits of taking on an apprentice include: attracting new talent, addressing skills shortages, increasing staff morale.

Get in touch Share your news and views...

A particular highlight was having a group of 28 technicians from Shell Iraq and nine technicians from TTOPCO (Kurdistan) join us at TTE to undertake specialist training programmes.

Email newsdesk@the-eic.com • Phone +44 (0)20 7091 8600

Q

And what are you looking forward to most in the next 12-18 months?

A

We are holding our annual celebration of success for learners on 27 June. This is always a special evening knowing that we have contributed to the economic and social prosperity of the Tees Valley through training the workforce of the future.

Longer-term I am also looking forward to further developing TTE into new countries and markets as we demonstrate what we can offer globally to address the nationalisation agenda.

Q

You’ve recently expanded your global offering. Can you tell us about the markets you’ve moved into, why you’ve chosen these and some of the challenges of doing so?

A

TTE currently operates in Indonesia, Cote D’Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea, Ghana and Oman delivering consultancy, training and assessment services to address the nationalisation agendas of these countries.

Introducing large-scale practical training programmes and international qualifications have provided challenges given the lack of familiarity with these systems overseas, however, once embedded have proven successful in developing technicians to meet the needs of local industry.

Member news Costain among first six worldwide to achieve certification in new international standard

Civil engineering company Costain is one of the first six companies in the world to be independently assessed by the British Standards Institution (BSI) and achieve certification to ISO 44001: collaborative business relationship management systems – requirements and frameworks. The new international standard, which is now published, replaces BS 11000: collaborative business relationships, and provides guidance for identifying, developing and managing collaborative business relationships within or between organisations. BS 11000 has helped numerous organisations in the UK enhance their competitiveness and performance. The new international standard has been developed in order to take in to account today’s business requirements and changes in technology and communications.

The new standard requires us to have collaborative relationships aligned to our business strategy and that we deliver value to our customers – something which we are able to demonstrate very well. Tony Blanch, Business Improvement Director, Costain

Frank Lee, Product Certification Technical and Operational Delivery Director at BSI commented, ‘The way that organisations do business and in particular, the way that they collaborate has changed significantly.

ISO 44001 ensures that with more complex enterprises and supply chains and new market demands, companies have best practice systems and processes in place for effective collaboration. ‘Costain should be delighted that they are one the first to achieve certification with BSI to the new standard and we’re confident that they will start to see the benefits immediately.’

Proserv’s SSC improves the quality of results and reduces risks normally associated with sample transfer. It does this by eliminating the risks associated with handling and transferring samples on the surface, and reducing the risk of containment loss and exposure to pollutants which can be dangerous to people and the environment. The system allows well properties to be captured accurately throughout the whole lifetime of a field. Andrew Anderson, Senior Vice President for Production Equipment Services at Proserv said, ‘With operators facing increased challenges in maximising production from geologically complex, high pressure and temperature and often remote and inhospitable fields, being able to generate accurate and reliable information from wells is critical in establishing its status and prospects. ‘We have developed a system to eliminate many of the issues that traditionally affect subsea samples. With the increasing demand for flow assurance and reservoir analysis, Proserv fully intends to set the pace as the leading global player in the subsea sampling field.’

Sonardyne wins Norwegian ROV order

Innova AS, a specialist subsea engineering and technology company based in Norway, has selected acoustic and inertial navigation technology firm Sonardyne International Ltd, for two new remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) being built in the country. Each ROV will be installed with a Sonardyne SPRINT-Nav, an all-inone subsea navigation instrument for underwater vehicles. It combines Sonardyne’s SPRINT inertial navigation system (INS) sensor and a Syrinx doppler velocity log.

SPRINT-Nav provides tightly coupled navigation data and can support a wide variety of survey and inspection missions in water depths up to 4,000 metres. The two ROVs are being built by IKM Technology, for delivery to IKM Subsea, who has contracted Innova to supply various on-board sensors, including the navigation system, as part of the vehicle’s development programme. The all-in-one design of SPRINTNav makes installation on ROVs straightforward, saves space and improves subsea navigation integrity. Its design also features a high accuracy pressure sensor which can be removed in the field for re-calibration and still allow the SPRINT-Nav unit to be deployed. Speaking about the order, Sven Eivind Torkildsen, Sales Manager for Innova AS said, ‘Throughout this project, flexibility, costeffectiveness and performance have been key factors in selecting the technology for our client’s new ROVs. SPRINT-Nav meets all these requirements, and many more besides, so we had no hesitation in specifying it.’

Conventional power plants must react more flexibly to offset irregularities from the growing supply of electrical power from renewable power sources. As a result, gas and coal-fired power stations are no longer continuously operating in basic mode, but rather go through the process of start-up and shutdown more frequently. Consequently, the number and extent of load changes increase and components are exposed to extreme temperature fluctuations more often. TÜV Rheinland, in partnership RWE Generation SE and StandZeit GmbH, are developing a creepfatigue-mechanism to deal with this phenomena as well measuring the long-term impact this mechanism will have on materials.

Overseas events EIC exhibits UK excellence at OTC 2017

The EIC will once again be hosting the UK pavilion (blocks 1339-1739) at the 2017 Offshore Technology Conference (OTC), supported by the Department for International Trade (DIT). Taking place from 1 to 4 May at NRG Park in Houston, Texas, OTC 2017 will bring together energy professionals to exchange ideas and collaborate knowledge on offshore resources and environmental matters. More than 100,000 industry leaders and buyers are expected to attend, who all want to explore how technology, best practices, emerging trends and proven methods are impacting the evolving landscape of the industry. With more than 130 countries being represented, OTC 2017 will be a melting pot of international expertise, offering investors and entrepreneurs from around the world the chance to connect and develop markets and business partnerships. As well as new professional contacts, delegates will benefit from access to cuttingedge technical information and the industry’s largest equipment exhibition. The EIC’s UK pavilion is one of the largest at OTC, comprising 52 leading businesses, all equipped with innovative solutions to deliver to the global oil and gas industry. UK companies will be exhibiting their wide range of skills and technology honed over four decades of operation in the North Sea, including drilling, flow assurance, geoscience, safety management and more. In the current challenging environment, technology remains essential for accessing reserves safely and cost-effectively, while minimising negative environmental impact. With the event’s location in Houston, visitors will also be able to learn about the wealth of opportunities across North and Central America. Offshore activity continues to be a focus of attention for the oil and gas industry in the region, despite low oil prices slowing down the pace. ABB SMART SENSOR FOR LOW VOLTAGE MOTORS The ABB smart sensor is an extremely low cost smart sensor and associated hardware and software that lets you know if your low voltage motors are about to fail or remain healthy and good to go. It also shows how much energy individual motors are using and why.

You then download the app and input the motor nameplate data including rpm, operating frequency and bearing type. This tells the sensor what signals to expect. Then using the smartphone’s Bluetooth, data is relayed from the sensor to the internet and back to the smartphone.

What’s your low voltage motor thinking?

Take control of your low voltage motor installed base

The smart sensor tracks motor surface temperature, vibration and bearing wear and tear. By sending this data to a smartphone app, your plant operators or maintenance personnel can see, at a glance, a traffic light system: red indicating an urgent problem that could lead to a breakdown, amber warning of some upcoming maintenance and green saying okay to keep running.

Installation is quick and easy

The sensor’s mount is attached, using a two component epoxy, to the outside of the motor – no wiring is necessary. Get in touch Share your news and views...

Email newsdesk@the-eic.com edward.white@the-eic.com • Phone • Phone +44+44 (0)20 (0)20 7091 7091 8600 8600

The smart sensor is available to purchase from ABB direct or from an ABB authorised value provider. Purchase unlocks the app, which is available for iOS or Android. It also gives access to the portal, the scope of which depends on whether the maintenance package (which contains everything needed for normal plant upkeep) or the analyst package (offers everything required to optimise a plant) is purchased. Understanding Brazil’s new financial compliance regulations

The Brazilian Tax Authorities enforce complex measures and requirements on businesses operating in Brazil. Under the current SPED (Sistema Público de Escrituração Digital) programme all businesses must record electronically each tax and accounting operation, this information is then fed into a report and submitted annually. This digital process is soon to be extended to the areas of HR and payroll – businesses will have to provide all information regarding labour rights, obligations, social security and taxes, electronically and in a specific format. The new format called e-Social is a mandatory requirement which will impact all businesses declaring over 78 million reais by January 2018 and all other businesses from 1 July 2018. e-Social is intended to streamline how information is currently submitted, facilitating corporate accountability and encouraging compliance with labour laws, if businesses are not aware of the format and do not comply they face being penalised with fines. All data must be submitted electronically, therefore if your business is not currently fully digital in its recording and reporting methods then process changes may be necessary. Predictions show that almost 60% of current data will require cleansing and in addition, three out of four processes will need to be amended in order to avoid penalty fines. To help businesses during the implementation and adaption period, we will be hosting a training course on 16 May at the EIC office in Rio de Janeiro. The course will be delivered by TOTVS Consulting, a Brazilian firm whose solutions are oriented to bring results through cross industry integrated business and technology skills, regardless of company size or complexity. Understanding Brazil’s newest obligations will focus on the Brazilian SPED programme, contextualising the new obligations under SPED, the main impacts on business processes, data consistency, IT requirements and the need for change management. It will clarify how the changes will impact companies, specifically suppliers active in Brazil. Topics covered • An overview of legal obligations in Brazil. • eSocial/REINF and their impact on processes, technology and people. • Bloco K (Register of production and stock). • Bloco W (Register of multinational companies operating in Brazil). • Deadlines and possible penalties. • Roadmap to compliance. Asia Pacific news We organised a successful event in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam in March where 50 companies attended a series of briefings by Vietnamese Azman energy players. The event Nasir was organised by the EIC in collaboration with the Vietnam Department of International Trade and the Office of the British Counsel General in Ho Chi Minh. Five briefings were conducted by senior management from PetroVietnam (PVN), PV Gas, PetroVietnam Technical Services (PTSC), Electricity Vietnam (EVN) and VietBid. The speakers presented the investment and project opportunities available for each company encompassing projects from the upstream, midstream, downstream, power and renewables sectors. Notable projects included the Nghi Son refinery and petrochemical complex, Nam Con Son pipeline, Thi Vai LNG terminal and the Blue Whale gas field and pipeline projects. Vietnam is also planning to build three major power plants to achieve 7,600MW of electricity supply by 2021. We are organising a major event in Jakarta, Indonesia in October 2017 in collaboration with the main oil and gas regulator SKK MIGAS. It is more likely now that the event will be held in SKK MIGAS’s own building which indicates the full support the EIC is receiving from them. Indonesia continues to have many potential projects being developed in the oil and gas, power and renewables sectors. Indonesia’s state-held energy company Pertamina plans to invest US$54bn in upstream production by 2025, with the purpose of raising its oil, gas and geothermal output by 185%. Pertamina’s goal is to increase oil, gas and geothermal production to around 1.91m barrels of oil equivalent per day (boepd), compared to just 670,000 boepd for November 2016. Indonesia is also seeking to more than double its refined oil production capacity to 2.3 million boepd by 2025. A trade delegation to Myanmar is likely to take place on 22-24 May 2017 with visits to the key players in Rangoon and the capital Naypyitaw. The EIC is working closely with the Department of International Trade of Burma and the British-Myanmar Chamber of Commerce to make this delegation a success for participating member companies. Finally, we would like to urge member companies to visit the UK pavilion at Oil and Gas Asia 2017 to be held in the Kuala Lumpur Conference & Exhibition Centre on 11-13 July 2017. President Trump halts regulation from Clean Power Plan

President Donald Trump has signed the Energy Independence Executive Order, repealing the suspension of coal mining on US federal lands, and rescinding analysis on the benefits of reducing carbon emissions outlined in the Clean Power Plan. The new order is the first step towards fulfilling the new administration’s campaign promise to draw the US out of the Paris Climate Agreement with the ultimate goal of ending regulations that threaten US economic growth. The initiative will face significant legal hurdles before it is fully absorbed into United States legislation and it remains to be seen how effective it will be in the coal industry’s recovery.

At a new venue, this signature event again promises to deliver a major overview Terry W illis of opportunities across the region where we are delighted to welcome a number of first time speakers to the conference and workshops. The one-to-one zone remains the most popular point of contact for delegates where they have the opportunity to meet and discuss individual issues. We very much look forward to welcoming you all and please do not hesitate to let us know if there is anything we can do to make the event even better for the future. At the beginning of April we were delighted to participate at a Saudi British Joint Business Council event organised in association with the Saudi Chamber of Commerce at Al Khobar. There was a strong presence from Saudi Aramco who took the opportunity to expand on their programme of encouraging vendors to set up operations in the Kingdom in order that they reach their long term goal of procuring the majority of their requirements within the Kingdom. April also saw our Opportunities in Iran showcase event and as a first, certainly for the EIC, we were honoured to be able to have a US perspective on the current trading situation from the Iran desk of the US Consulate in Dubai. In addition, there were presentations from our own Department for International Trade representative from the British Embassy in Tehran plus an overview on all the opportunities, where they lie and how to access them. The event finished up with a panel discussion. Once again ADIPEC is proving to be the prime global event for the oil and gas sector. We have expanded our presence and at the beginning of April we had only 13 stands left. For any company who is contemplating a presence in the region, this is an event not to be missed. For this year, we have rescheduled our UK reception to the Tuesday night. The venue will remain at the A-Loft. We are seeking a range of sponsors for our ADIPEC activities so please get in touch if you would like to discuss further the range of branding opportunities that are available. Finally, I would like to take the opportunity to thank everybody for their good wishes following my recent surgery from which I have enjoyed a full recovery. Thank you.
