The EIC Chief Executive

The Chief Executive Welcome to the November edition of the Monthly News. Firstly, I would like to congratulate AMEC and its technology partner DAI, the worthy winners of the EIC Award for Supply Chain Excellence 2014 for their Track & Trace system, which identifies and tracks materials across the supply chain. I’d also like to make a special mention of Cape Environmental Services, who was highly commended for its Torpedo internal overboard caisson cleaning system. The EIC’s President Lord Howell presented the awards at the EIC National Dinner on 16 October, which I hope many of you had the opportunity to enjoy. The event proved to be a delightful evening set in the Central Hall at the Natural History Museum. In its second year, the Award attracted a 20% increase on the number of entries from the inaugural year. Seven companies were shortlisted by our independent judging panel, who all submitted first-class entries and maintained the exceptionally high benchmark set in 2013. The EIC is once again about to host the UK Pavilion at ADIPEC in Abu Dhabi, bringing together 60 leading UK-registered suppliers. This year, I am looking forward to welcoming UK Energy Minister Matthew Hancock, British Ambassador to the UAE, Philip Parham, and British Ambassador to Iraq, Frank Baker, to our exclusive reception event at The A-Loft Hotel to network and discuss local markets with British suppliers. In the Middle East region, soaring demand has fuelled a dash for gas, increased interest in renewables and even moves into shale exploration in Saudi Arabia, all of which offer substantial new market opportunities for experienced UK businesses. Indeed, analysis carried out by the EIC using EICDataStream indicates that Abu Dhabi in particular is playing a starring role in the region’s upstream sector. Of 246 major upstream contracts (EPC, FEED and PMC) awarded in the MENA region between January 2010 and September 2014, over a quarter (66) were for work on projects in Abu Dhabi where the goal of increasing onshore oil production, particularly through innovative EOR technologies, and the pursuit of gas to meet increasing demand is driving heavy investment. Back in the UK, Government and industry are both focused on maximising oil and gas reserves from the mature North Sea province, a strategy that seems to have found clearer direction following the publication of the Wood Review earlier this year. This, and the operating environments in other pertinent geographies and markets will be on the agenda at EIC Connect Oil & Gas, taking place at Manchester Central on 25-26 November. The programme goes from strength-to-strength and I am delighted to announce that high-profile speakers from ConocoPhillips, PEMEX, Premier Oil, Shell, Technip, WorleyParsons, Wood Group and many more will be talking to delegates about topical issues and project opportunities in the upstream, midstream and downstream sectors. Delegate bookings are now open so if you would like to book your place, please visit: www.eic-connect.co.uk The latest edition of the EIC Monitor Oil & Gas report has been released (Q3, 2014), and shows that the global oil and gas industry has followed a gentle downward trajectory of project contracting activity since the last quarter, suggesting that rising costs and a declining oil price are starting to make an impact. Nonetheless, I am confident that the wealth of knowledge and flexibility characteristic of our member companies will focus on progress and innovation, realising a new tranche of opportunities for the supply chain. Please see page 4 to read the full report. Another announcement in the last month has been the European Commission’s approval of the UK’s State Aid funding for EDF Energy’s Hinkley Point C nuclear power plant in Somerset, clearing one of the hurdles before a final investment decision is reached. This was one of the leading topics up for discussion at the World Nuclear Exhibition in Paris, where EIC took a group of companies for the first time. To maximise the global opportunities, I encourage you to make full use of EICDataStream and the many other products and services provided by the EIC to assist you in promoting your products and services and gaining a competitive edge. Wishing you continued business success. Claire Miller, Chief Executive www.the-eic.com

EIC Sector Analysis

Sector Analysis Ice, ice, maybe? – rising Arctic optimism

The melting ice caps have also opened up previously inaccessible routes which are promising for both trade and exploration. The two routes currently proposed are the Northwest Passage and the North Sea route. Of the two, the North Sea route looks increasingly likely. In August 2013, the first container-transporting vessel sailed along the North Sea route. Potential upsides include a 40% reduction in fuel and the resulting emissions and the bypassing of the Suez and Panama canals, thereby cutting out the costly toll charges altogether. The creation of the Arctic Economic Council (AEC), which held its first meeting in early September this year, offers further encouragement for businesses. The AEC will develop a sustainable framework for business development in the Arctic by acting as a source of advice to the Arctic Council, while fostering business relationships across the Arctic through supplying its own membership, governance and activities. A general framework for further work was established at the AEC’s inaugural meeting. It intends to focus on market access and investments, public-private partnerships, establishing local foundations and developing employment and educational opportunities for the indigenous people. The Arctic is administered according to the domestic laws and regulations of each Arctic state, but is also subject to bilateral, regional and international agreements. The overarching legal framework that governs activities on, over and beneath the Arctic (as with the world’s oceans) is the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which has, amongst other things, set territorial boundaries, exclusive economic zones and established freedom of navigation rights. While the US subscribes to most of UNCLOS as universal law, it remains one of only a few nations in the world to not have ratified the treaty. Which could create an interesting, possibly fractious, situation next year, as the US will take over the chairmanship of the Arctic Council in 2015. While there may be several difficulties involved in exploring the Arctic, territorial disputes should not be one. The overwhelming majority of Arctic resources fall within accepted national boundaries. Indeed, since 2010, diplomats have continued to cite the resolution of the decades-old maritime border dispute between Russia and Norway over the Barents Sea as a model for Arctic diplomacy. With the sharply rising costs in discovered areas, frontier regions such as the Arctic are not only looking increasingly feasible, but also more and more necessary to encourage growth and optimism in an industry ever more in need of it. John Bridgeman Sector Analyst (Upstream) Tel +44 (0)20 7091 8637 Email john.bridgemen@the-eic.com

The melting of Arctic Sea ice to record lows in recent years has prompted many nations, primarily those with an Arctic coastline – the US, Canada, Russia, Norway and Denmark (Greenland) – to reassess their commitments and strategic interests. While shorter trade routes through the arctic, such as the proposed North Sea Route, could be a boon to export-driven nations such as China. In terms of petroleum exploration, shrinking margins have made previously feasible discoveries uneconomic. This has in turn increased the minimum resources required to develop new fields. Finding such large discoveries is very unlikely in mature fields with few unknown areas left to explore, leading companies reliant on elephant discoveries in frontier regions. ExxonMobil, Rosneft, Statoil, ConocoPhillips and Shell are some of the operators already active in one of the world’s least explored regions for hydrocarbons. Rosneft’s recent light oil and gas discovery in the world’s northernmost well in the Kara Sea is a source of encouragement and an example of the possible rewards gained from the Arctic. With estimated reserves of 730 million barrels of oil and 11.9 trillion cubic feet of gas, the Podeba discovery is accurately described as a giant. Rosneft estimates that the field contains some 30 similar accumulations totalling up to 87 billion barrels of oil equivalent. The field may become one of the world’s most important crude-producing areas depending on how much of these resources are economically recoverable. It has been suggested that the Kara Sea area could challenge Saudi Arabia for resource potential. As Saudi Arabia can boast a proven resource of 265.9 billion barrels of oil (16% of the entire globe), this is quite a claim. While less dramatic than the Podeba discovery, the Pingvin well in the Barents Sea is also a source of promise for Arctic exploration. The discovery of gas may have been a disappointment for Statoil as a large oil discovery is the only sure fire way for an economically viable development in Norway’s current tax climate. Yet, it is a promising sign for the future. While the discovery is currently considered non-commercial, Statoil sees it as a new play opener in the frontier area. The most recent Circum-Arctic Resource Appraisal, conducted in 2008 by the US Geological Survey (USGS), estimated that nearly one-quarter of the Earth’s undiscovered, recoverable petroleum resources lie in the region: 13% of the oil, 30% of the natural gas, and 20% of the liquefied natural gas. More than 80% of these are thought to be offshore. Russia has been the most eager to invest in recent years with forty-four of around sixtytwo large Arctic oil and gas fields discovered in Russia – eleven in Canada, six in Alaska and one in Norway. www.the-eic.com

EIC Monitor

Volatility hits oil and gas contracting levels, according to EIC Monitor The latest EIC Monitor report shows that the global oil and gas industry has followed a gentle downward trajectory of project contracting activity in the last quarter (Q3: Jul-Sept 2014), with 139 contracts placed, a decrease of 7% compared to 149 in Q2 2014, and a significant 22% decrease on the 178 contract awards made in Q3 2013.

Aibel was also successful in the Norwegian North Sea, securing a contract on Statoil’s US$50 million Oseberg C Continuous Drilling project, for which Apply Leirvik was awarded an EPC contract to fabricate the additional living quarters. In the Middle East, EPC activity has been dominated by projects in Abu Dhabi, where National Petroleum Construction Company (NPCC) and Hyundai Heavy Industries were both awarded EPC packages on the US$3.5 billion Nasr offshore oil field development. A consortium of Technip and NPCC also landed the contract to upgrade gas facilities at the US$350 million Umm Shaif Super Complex. In neighbouring Saudi Arabia, Essar Group has been appointed to carry out the EPC work for the US$54 million Abqaiq Crude Stabilisation Plant upgrade in Shaybah.

Upstream

In Q3 2014, a total of 40 major contracts (EPC, FEED and Subsea/SURF) were awarded across 35 upstream developments, a significant decline of 41% from 68 awards in Q2 2014, and a 49% decline on Q3 2013 figures. The decline reflects the slowdown in global upstream project activity, largely due to rising costs. A total of 22 EPC contracts, 12 FEED contracts and 6 Subsea/SURF contracts were awarded in Q3 2014.

FEED Activity In Q3 2014, there was a broad geographic spread of upstream FEED activity although Norway led activity, accounting for a quarter (3) of contracts awarded. Aker Solutions sub-contracted a major FEED award for the US$19.4 billion Johan Sverdrup development in the Norwegian North Sea to RBS, a subsidiary of UK-based drilling contractor KCA Deutag. Also in the same waters, Sevan Marine was appointed to conduct the FEED work on the hull and marine systems for the US$1.6 billion Bream oil field development. Further north in the Norwegian Sea, Aibel is to carry out a study to clarify upgrade solutions on an FPSO unit with regard to the possible future connection of existing discoveries as part of a framework agreement between Marathon Oil and Aibel for FEED studies on the US$720 million Alvheim & Vilje development. On the UKCS, IntecSea was awarded the FEED contract for subsea work on the US$3 billion Culzean HPHT field in the Central North Sea. In British territories overseas, progress continues on the US$5.2 billion Sea Lion Discovery Area development off the coast of the Falklands Islands, where AMEC has been awarded a FEED contract for the topsides on a Tension Leg Platform. Elsewhere, progress is continuing on the major US$46 billion Libra Oil & Gas field development, offshore Brazil, where Wood Group Mustang has been awarded a FEED contract to carry out the topsides engineering for a leased FPSO that will carry out long duration tests (LDTs). Projects in the MENA region have accounted for a further four FEED contracts: Foster Wheeler secured a five-year contract for the US$3 billion Empty Quarter, South Ghawar and Jafurah tight gas development; Tecon Engineering was appointed as FEED contractor for DNO’s US$150 million expansion at the Tawke and Khanke oil fields in Iraq; CB&I is to carry out design work for the US$1.5 billion Ain Tsila project, onshore Algeria; and a consortium of Foster Wheeler and Taknia Libya Engineering secured a contract for the US$900 million Area 47 Ghadames Basin onshore development in northwestern Libya.

EPC Activity The Asia Pacific, North Sea and Middle East regions have been hotspots of activity, together accounting for 14 EPC contracts across 11 upstream developments. In the Asia Pacific region, EPC activity has been dominated by Indonesia where a consortium of Bumi Armada and Gema Group secured two awards for work on a FPSO to be deployed on the US$1.2 billion Madura BD, MDA, MBH gas field development; McDermott Intl won a contract to build the BTJT-A Jacket for the US$500 million Bukit Tua field; Bakrie & Brothers were appointed to carry out mooring fabrication for the US$3 billion Banyu Urip oil field development; and a consortium of Technip and Wijaya Karya landed the EPC work for the US$250 million Matindok gas field in Sulawesi. In nearby Malaysia, Malaysia International Shipping Corp was appointed to build a Marginal Mobile Production Unit for the US$200 million Ophir oil field development. In Wyoming, Plum Energy has been appointed to build a US$50 million small-scale LNG plant adjacent to the Eagle Butte Mine. FEED/Pre-FEED Activity North America has dominated activity again this quarter, with 3 FEED contracts and 7 Pre-FEED contracts awarded in the US and Canada. As per Q2 2014, the high level of activity in North America can be attributed to the progress being made on LNG plants, which account for all but two of the FEED/Pre-FEED contracts this quarter. In the US, activity was led by projects in Alaska, where a total of five contracts were awarded across three projects. A JV of Fluor and WorleyParsons secured a Pre-FEED contract for major industrial plant at the US$45 billion SCLNG Liquefaction Plant in Nikiski, where a JV of Fugro and Moffatt & Nichol International also won the Pre-FEED for the dock and LNG loading; Michael Baker was appointed Pre-FEED contractor on the US$3 billion Alaska Pipeline Project; and KBR will carry out the Pre-FEED for the US$1.5 billion Alaska-Japan LNG plant near Port MacKenzie, Cook Inlet. Here, PND Engineers was also awarded a FEED contract for the design of the dock. Down on the Gulf coast, WorleyParsons secured a contract to carry out the Pre-FEED for the pipeline at the US$10 billion Golden Pass LNG Plant expansion at Sabine Pass, Texas, where a consortium of CB&I and Chiyoda also landed the FEED contract for the LNG plant. In neighbouring Louisiana, Bechtel secured the FEED contract for the US$1 billion Louisiana LNG plant on the east bank of the Mississippi river. EIC Monitor Earlier this year, Pemex announced its intention to invest heavily in hydro-desulphurisation (HDS) projects in order to expand production of ultra-low sulphur diesel (ULSD) in Mexico. In Q3 2014, this led to a significant level of contracting activity on refineries across Mexico, with five EPC contracts awarded on such projects to ICA Fluor, Tecnicas Reunidas, Samsung Engineering, Foster Wheeler, and a consortium of Dragados and Cobra. A further EPC contract was also awarded in Mexico for a refit at a Pemex fertiliser plant. FEED Activity Pemex’s investments in ULSD have also fuelled a sizeable amount of FEED contracting activity, with four such contracts awarded in Mexico, all for ULSD refinery projects: two to Foster Wheeler and Arendal for the US$584 million Antonio Dovali Jaime refinery in Salina Cruz; one to Samsung Engineering for the US$359 million Antonio Amor refinery in Salamanca; and one to Tecnicas Reunidas for the US$568 million Lazaro Cardenas refinery in Minatitian. Bahrain was a hotspot of downstream FEED activity with three contracts awarded for work on the US$10 billion Sitra refinery upgrade: Technip secured two contracts for various packages of work, while Chevron Lummus is to licence its LC-FINING™ and ISOCRACKING® technologies for the plant. The remaining activity this quarter was dotted around geographically, with one downstream FEED contract awarded apiece in the UK, Algeria, China, Poland, Russia and Turkmenistan.

EPC Activity There has been a significant increase in downstream EPC activity in Q3 2014, and much of this can be attributed to projects in the US, Canada, Mexico and Malaysia, which together account for 24 contracts over 12 developments. The US led downstream EPC activity with nine contracts awarded, largely in the southern states of the US shale corridor. In Texas, BMZ Export Terminal Partners were appointed EPC contractors for the US$1 billion Freeport LNG Export Terminal; Jacobs is to carry out site enabling works at the US$5 billion Baytown Olefins Plant Expansion, while on the adjacent bank of Tabbs Bay in La Porte, KBR won a contract to carry out EPC work for the US$500 million Gemini HDPE plant. Alstom has taken advantage of its experience with the 1MW turbine to improve the design of its tidal stream turbine. Alstom is now offering the Oceade™ 18 - 1.4MW, making the turbine even more efficient, cost-effective and easy to maintain. With a rotor diameter of 18 metres, the Oceade tidal stream turbine has a nominal power of 1.4MW and three variable pitching blades. It is equipped with plug-and-play modules on rails, easily accessible through an inspection hatch at the rear of the nacelle to enable faster assembly and maintenance. This turbine is buoyant, making it easy to tow to and from the operating site. Installation and maintenance costs are therefore lower because there is no need for specialist vessels and divers. It also reduces the timeframe to install or retrieve the turbine. The unit rotates to face the incoming tide at an optimal angle and thus extract the maximum energy potential. The Oceade is ready to be deployed at the tidal energy farm that will be selected in the call for expressions of interest launched in September 2013 by the French government. Alstom is currently working on the development of an Oceade™ platform concept to reduce the price of electricity and maximise the use of tidal stream resources according to local conditions. In January 2013, Alstom successfully deployed a 1MW tidal stream turbine at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC), a test site located off the coast of the Orkney Islands in Scotland. Alstom is currently testing the turbine, which has already reached nominal power of 1MW, demonstrated its autonomous running capability and generated over 500MWh on the Scottish grid, as part of the ReDapt Project (Reliable Data Acquisition Platform for Tidal), which was commissioned and co-funded by the ETI (Energy Technologies Institute). With Oceade 18 - 1.4MW, Alstom has taken a new step forward in the development of marine energy production solutions. Jacques Jamart, Senior Vice-President New Energies, Alstom, said: “The project is seeking to demonstrate a new design for an efficient, reliable turbine to reduce installation and maintenance costs with a view to commercial production.” Alstom is continuing to develop the largest portfolio of solutions in the field of renewable energies. The company offers the most complete range of products and integrated systems to generate electricity from hydraulic, onshore and offshore wind, geothermal, biomass and solar sources. The most attractive wind farm sites are often found at locations where the wind conditions are difficult to quantify. Examples include sites affected by atmospheric stability, exposed and hilly sites as well as wind farms in or near forests. An ongoing challenge for the wind industry is to accurately predict the variation of wind speed across such ‘complex’ sites in order to determine a credible estimate for the energy output of the project in question. If these predictions can be made more accurately, even by a relatively small amount, it leads to a direct improvement in the financing conditions available to project developers – thereby reducing the cost of electricity delivered to the grid and improving returns. DNV GL has been developing methods for predicting wind flow on complex sites for more than two decades and in recent years has developed cutting edge Computation Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques to boost accuracy further. E.ON’s blind test comprised of wind flow modelling for eight wind farm sites located across four countries: the USA, UK, Spain and Sweden. Each location posed varying geographical and climatic challenges which added complexity to the modelling. This included atmospheric stability, forestry and complex terrains. Participants were asked to make their best predictions of the wind conditions at locations corresponding to existing measurement masts at each site. The predictions were then compared to the actual measurements; the smaller the difference, the higher the ranking in the blind test. Matthew Meyers, Head of Wind Yield Assessment at E.ON, said: “Enabling greater accuracy in wind speed predictions helps to reduce financial risk. We’d like to congratulate DNV GL on achieving the best results across the sites relative to other models tested. This outcome is as much about knowledge of atmospheric flow characteristics as accuracy in computer modelling.” The DNV GL CFD team has analysed hundreds of wind farm sites to date. Jean-François Corbett, Head of CFD (wind) at DNV GL commented: “Anyone can produce a CFD-predicted wind speed; but in our view, modelled physics must be combined with qualified engineering judgment in order to produce results that are meaningful. This requires years of experience and learning from real data and real-world sites.” For more information please visit: www.dnvgl.com

Damper Technology Ltd (DTL) has just announced record figures for order intake over the last three month period. Order intake for the last quarter is up by 51% on this time last year, having won several large projects to supply industrial dampers for Waste Heat Recovery Units (WHRU’S) for projects in Africa and the Middle East, replacement dampers and spares/service work for WHRU’s that have seen 20 years harsh offshore service in the North Sea, and contracts with a number of new customers from biomass power plant installations requiring industrial dampers. Following the launch of a range of specially engineered dampers for applications involving process gases containing SO2/SO3, DTL has also won a large order for high pressure acid plant dampers requiring zero leakage to atmosphere for a plant in Saudi Arabia. DTL is now further planning for its future and is seeking to appoint an Electrical Fitter at its manufacturing plant in Leicester and an additional Design Engineer/ Draughtsperson. And following the progression of one of its first apprentices stepping up into a junior role within the engineering department, working on projects from conception through all stages of the design process, the company has given an opportunity to another entry level apprentice at the Eastwood design office with immediate effect. DTL took on its first apprentices in 2012 and the first intake has successfully completed the second year, culminating in a level 4 HNC in Mechanical Engineering, so delighted with the progress and success of these, DTL has now introduced apprentices into other areas of its business. DTL employed its first factory mechanical engineering apprentice in 2013 who has now completed a full year with the company and is demonstrating skills in plating, welding and assembly with minimal supervision. Making way for two new mechanical engineering apprentices that started during July 2014. For information on DTL’s apprenticeship opportunities please visit: www.dampertechnology.com

Locker Heatshielding Ltd

Cable cleat manufacturer Ellis welcomed guests from Australia, Singapore and South America to its Rillington headquarters in North Yorkshire last month as it hosted its first ever Global Distributor Conference. The company, which has a highly successful export operation, has a network of 26 distributors and business development specialists working in key markets across the world and brought them all together for the two day event. Richard Shaw, Managing Director, Ellis, said: “Our distributors are to all intents and purpose Ellis in their particular markets, but each and every one of them works independently and so we felt the conference would prove extremely beneficial to everyone – ourselves included. “The conference programme covered every aspect of the business and enabled the distributors the chance to share ideas and best practice, address issues they may be having in terms of product, delivery and support, and find out about key development plans – both current and future – for Ellis and its products.” “The key aims of the conference were all achieved, but one of the most interesting aspects to come from it was that it served to create a real sense of community among the distributors – many of who were meeting for the very first time,” added Richard. “They spoke at length to one another, creating both business and social relationships that I hope will go on to prove of great importance to us all in the future.” Visit: www.ellispatents.co.uk

Brasil Offshore Oil & Gas Exhibition and Conference 23-26 June 2015 Macaé TAP funding tbc The EIC is pleased to be returning to host the UK National Pavilion for another year at Brasil Offshore 2015. The International Brasil Offshore Oil and Gas Exhibition is held every two years in Macaé, which is the operational base for more than 80% of offshore exploration in Brazil. The bi-annual Brasil Offshore exhibition focuses on the importance Brazil will play in meeting increasing global energy demand. The exhibition brings together key-personnel within engineering, operations and procurement providing a unique opportunity to suppliers of goods and services worldwide. Brasil Offshore is the third largest offshore exhibition in the world, considered one of the most relevant trade shows within the international offshore market, attracting visitors and exhibitors from 38 countries and covering all aspects of the Brazilian offshore industry. In 2013, the event attracted more than 700 exhibitors and over 51,000 visitors. Brasil Offshore is the perfect platform for UK companies who are new to the market, those in the process of acquiring Brazilian companies, setting up manufacturing facilities, and those with fully fledged operations and experience in the market. For more information please contact Deanne Lintorn, Overseas Events Manager: deanne.lintorn@the-eic.com

The exhibition will provide members of the UK supply chain with excellent exposure to existing and new customers resulting in a host of new business leads, and the informative events are aimed at assisting UK companies to win a larger percentage of the LNG and support services contracts in Australia. To book contact: mark.gamble@the-eic.com

Overseas Delegations Overseas Delegation to South Africa & Mozambique 22-27 February 2015 MAP funding of £840 for eligible SMEs The EIC is organising an oil and gas overseas trade delegation to Maputo in Mozambique and Johannesburg and Cape Town in South Africa. While much is expected of Mozambique’s global influence as an LNG exporter, it has already established ties much closer to home, exporting gas to South Africa via pipeline to supply Sasol’s Secunda CTL plant and to fuel gas-fired power plants. In fact, due to South Africa’s rising petroleum consumption (currently the secondlargest consumer in Africa), plans are underway to construct a further pipeline between the two countries. This 2,450km pipeline will transport natural gas sourced from the Rovuma Basin in Mozambique to South Africa for its gas-to-power markets. Delegates will have the opportunity to attend organised group meetings with key local players, as well as incorporating briefing meetings presented by qualified speakers with in-market experience and the opportunity to meet with local companies. To book your place please contact Mark Gamble, Overseas Events Manager: mark.gamble@the-eic.com

Overseas Delegation to Kuwait 18-20 January 2015 MAP funding confirmed With over US$96 billion worth of planned investment in oil and gas projects, supply chain opportunities are ripe within Kuwait. GDP has been growing on an annual basis since 2011 by an average rate of 6.9%. Petroleum accounts for nearly half of GDP, 95% of export revenues, and 95% of government income. Kuwaiti officials have committed to increasing oil production to 4 million bbl/d by 2020. The Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) manages domestic and foreign oil investments. Kuwait Oil Company (KOC), the upstream subsidiary of KPC, manages all upstream development in the oil and gas sectors. The Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) controls the downstream sector, while the Petrochemical Industries Company (PIC) is in charge of the petrochemical sector. Export operations are overseen by both KNPC and the Kuwait Oil Tanker Company (KOTC). Delegates will have the opportunity to attend organised group meetings with key local players, as well as incorporating briefing meetings presented by qualified speakers with in-market experience and the opportunity to meet with local companies. EIC UK News

News from our UK offices

Export Showcase East Africa Export Showcase Tuesday 9 December 2014 EIC Conference Suite, London Neglected for decades in favour of Africa’s resource rich North and West Africa, interest in East Africa has increased exponentially in recent years following the discovery of significant quantities of oil in Uganda in 2006. Excitement surrounding onshore oil discoveries in Uganda has been bolstered by promising oil discoveries in Kenya. However, it is the world-class natural gas discoveries off the coast of Mozambique and Tanzania that look set to transform East Africa into a major oil and gas region. The EIC is currently tracking 147 active and future projects in the region worth over an estimated US$170 billion; the majority of new investment is in the oil and gas sector, although there are noteworthy projects within the renewables and power sectors as the region aims to develop its energy industry. While more and more international companies are taking advantage of the opportunities in East Africa, it remains one of the world’s most underprivileged and under-developed regions. Join the EIC and representatives from across the East African energy market to find out about: • The Governments’ plans to harness the development of the energy sector to benefit local communities and local content stipulations that are being put in place. • Details of where potential opportunities lie for UK suppliers. • The challenges your organisation may face and the support available to your company locally. Register your interest with Jennifer Hole.

Forthcoming Events

Regional Showcase Southern Region Operators Update Tuesday 2 December 2014 EIC Conference Suite, London A panel of representatives from some of the UK’s most prominent operators will provide an ‘Operators View’ on some of the main trends related to the energy market at present. Focusing on challenges and supplier requirements, the panel will include a cross section of operators from oil and gas, power and renewables. Topics covered will include: Enhanced Oil Recovery, spiralling contractor costs, deep water challenges and new frontiers. There will also be an opportunity for networking and one-2-one meetings. A full programme will be available shortly. Details will be available on the EIC website: www.the-eic.com/events Register your interest with Jennifer Hole. Export Showcase Latin America Export Showcase Wednesday 3 December 2014 EIC Conference Suite, London

Export Showcase Eastern Europe Export Showcase Tuesday 20 January 2015 EIC Conference Suite, London The EIC is tracking 398 active and future projects across Eastern Europe (excluding Russia) with a combined estimated CAPEX of US$420 billion. Power projects dominate these figures, with 11 nuclear plant developments and expansions each worth over US$5 billion alone. The region’s midstream sector is the second most prominent with a series of massive pipelines planned with the strategic aim of enhancing Europe’s energy security. Despite comparably less investment and activity, the region’s upstream sector is newsworthy, with a series of shale exploration projects; Poland and Ukraine are set to be the region’s leading shale markets in terms of the number of potential projects as well as the domestic political support, existing infrastructure and beneficial upstream experience these two countries have to offer. While opportunities are vast the practicalities of doing business in the region vary greatly depending on the stability of specific countries’ regulatory and legal environment. Join the EIC and UKTI at this Eastern European Showcase for an overview of the region’s energy sector, details of where the main opportunities lie and the support available to companies looking to do business across Europe. Register your interest with Jennifer Hole.

The Latin American oil and gas industry will see significant capital expenditure on numerous developments in the future, with the region as a whole expected to offer significant business opportunities for the UK supply chain. As one of the world-leading oil and gas producers, recent activity across Central and South America is stimulating the regions potential. For example, production in the presalt region off the coast of Brazil, Venezuela’s continued investment in heavy oil and the discovery of a significant amount of shale oil and tight oil in Colombia, the region has established a reputation for being one of the most exciting E&P investment markets. The EIC and UKTI bring you an excellent panel of speakers who will detail their company’s project plans, procurement strategies and investment opportunities. This is a unique opportunity to find out more about how your organisations can take advantage of the opportunities the country has to offer to UK companies. Register your interest with Sean Gordon.

Sector Showcase Shutdowns and Turnarounds Showcase Wednesday 21 January 2015 Northern Region venue tbc Owners of commercial facilities, manufacturing processes, and industrial plants view maintenance of their assets as key to their effective operation. While most routine inspection, repair, replacement and minor maintenance work can be done while the plant is in operation or online, there are times when a plant has to undergo a scheduled process outage for the major maintenance work, namely a shutdown. This is a crucial time where it is imperative that everything goes to plan. The aim of the event is to bring together owners of some of the major plant across the UK to highlight what is involved in the shutdown and turnaround process; to hear about some of the key challenges faced by these owners and how our members can help to solve them, along with identifying forthcoming work scheduled. Register your interest with Jennifer Hole.

The UK’s knowledge and experience of the nuclear industry is vast – being the first to develop and operate nuclear power stations sixty years ago – we currently have around 18% of our electricity supplies from nuclear energy. At present there is a huge amount of work involved in decommissioning of current plant, alongside preparing for the building of new power stations with the first being developed by EDF, followed by Horizon Nuclear Power and NuGeneration. It is anticipated that the first new plant will be online by 2023. This event will provide an update about the nuclear industry as a whole, including both decommissioning and new build, identifying where progress has been made, the anticipated timescales, where the opportunities lie and how the supply chain should engage to ensure that they can secure their place in the industry in the future. Forthcoming Events Industry Overview

Fundamentals of Refining & Petrochemicals Tuesday 4 November 2014 Radisson Royal Hotel, Dubai

Office News

Since ADIPEC became an annual event, November has grown to become one of the busiest months of the year. The Formula One Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi always attracts world attention but when one looks at this year’s ADIPEC offering, it is clear to see that this now rivals OTC in Houston as a prime occasion within the global energy community. We have another strong contingent of 60 companies making up the UK Group and will be arranging an ice breaker event to allow the participants to mix freely with their locally based peers. We are indebted to UKTI for providing their valuable support and the British Ambassador, Philip Parham for providing a keynote speech. Another significant event that traditionally takes place in November is our very own EIC Connect which will be returning to Manchester where the Dubai office will be on hand to discuss at first hand any issues relating to the extremely buoyant Middle East, Africa and CIS markets. Last month saw us host local operator, Dana Gas not long after they were able to release two significant notices, one concerning their strong finances and the other regarding the capture of additional assets in Egypt. The 50 strong audience was able to engage with senior Dana Gas executives including their CEO, Patrick AllmanWard. Two weeks later, we offered our ever popular Fish & Chips, ably supported by the venue, Wheelers of St James and took the opportunity to provide an insight and update as to who we are and what we do. We were able to demonstrate the value of EIC membership as well as include EICDataStream training sessions. Booking details have been released for our 5th Annual Golf Day which is scheduled for 19 February 2015. With our brand new sponsor Wood Group PSN, if there are any members out there who are thinking of entering a team, then you are encouraged to act early in order to avoid later disappointment. Before moving on to an acknowledgement of our visitors and guests, it is worth mentioning our programme of training courses. Reaction from the membership has been mixed and as we are keen to deliver this added element of our service offering in future, we would be delighted to hear back any opinions, comments or requests for topics that perhaps we may not have covered. Your suggestions would be most welcome and we very much appreciate your continued support. Details of up and coming events plus further details can be found on the website. For visitors, we welcomed our new neighbours, CMP Products who recently re-located from Jebel Ali to be here at the Dubai Airport Free Zone. A team from Thomas & Betts took advantage of our refurbished meeting room to hold a webinar conference and John Kaznowski from Rexel International Projects passed by and was badgered into sponsoring two packages for the Golf Day. Renewable energy tax credits to be extended Two US members of Congress have introduced a bill to renew expired renewable energy tax credits. The proposal would extend the production tax credits (PTC) for wind energy through to 2016. It would also grant the solar industry the same access to credits at the start of a project’s construction that the wind industry has. The PTC expired for projects that did not start construction by year-end 2013. The bill has been assigned to a congressional committee.

Brazil to invest US$97.2bn in power sector New power generation projects in Brazil are expected to require an investment of US$97.2 billion over the next decade, according to the government’s latest 10 year energy plan prepared by the Ministry of Mines and Energy. Projects using renewable sources will account for approximately half of this amount. Brazil’s installed capacity is planned to increase by 57%, reaching close to 200GW by 2023. Hydro power will continue to be the most important source in the country, with 31GW of new capacity to be installed in that period. Meanwhile, the country’s transmission network will grow by 62% with the installation of 69,817km of transmission lines.

In September, UK companies visiting the region benefited from several initiatives at Rio Oil & Gas, the second largest O&G exhibition in the Americas. The week started with a briefing session organised by UKTI followed by an industry overview about local content to 40 attendees organised by the EIC on 17 September. On the UK Pavilion, 20 members had the chance to learn about opportunities in Latin America directly from speakers from UKTI Colombia and Mexico. About 400 guests from the Brazilian industry tasted the single malt whiskies as part of the two sessions sponsored by the Great Campaign as part of UKTI and Swire Oilfield Services. The week ended with 114 people networking and enjoying themselves listening to Brazilian music and trying the Caipirinha at the Rio Scenarium. Also in September I attended the EIC Overseas Delegation to Lima, where we organised more than 10 meetings with local companies. The highlight was the gathering of 60 VIP guests from the industry hosted by Mr Anwar Choudhury, the UK Ambassador in Peru. If you’re planning a visit to Rio, please don’t hesitate to visit the newly refurbished Rio office and meet the team.

Rio de Janeiro launches subsea cluster Rio’s state secretary for economic development has launched a project that will eventually set up a cluster of companies serving the local subsea market. The initiative, developed in partnership with the National Organization of the Petroleum Industry (ONIP) and the Ministry of Development, Industry and Trade, aims to attract subsea equipment manufacturers and service providers to the state of Rio de Janeiro, which is home to 35 companies in this segment. According to an estimate by the International Energy Agency (IEA), Brazil will concentrate 44% of all subsea equipment in the world by 2020. Argentine Senate debates hydrocarbons reform The country’s Senate is currently debating a package of proposed reforms which are expected to boost investment in Argentina’s oil and gas sector. Drafted by 10 hydrocarbon-producing provinces such as Neuquén and Chubut, the reforms aim to streamline the legal framework for exploration and production in the country. Instead of various legal arrangements managed by different provinces, the reforms would introduce a single national platform in charge of new E&P contracts. The proposed reforms are seen as a crucial step for the development of the Vaca Muerta formation, which is estimated to hold 802 trillion cubic feet of shale gas reserves.
