CABARETE, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

Cabarete is one of those few destinations that has it all; sun, wind, flat water and waves, and all of this happens almost all year round. Cabarete is part of the largest island in the Caribbean and offers perfect kiteboarding with tons of local culture and easy airplane access from anywhere in the world.

The island offers countless surf spots to choose from with beach breaks and reef breaks spread out across the coast that are all surfable and kiteable, with something for every skill level. For those that prefer to practices freestyle, there are perfect flat water spots and there’s a large number of professional kite schools that offer the perfect destination to learn how to kiteboard from the ground up. Cabarete is more than just kiteboarding—you can surf, horseback ride, learn a new language, explore waterfalls, swim in underwater caves, SUP down a river, visit beautiful beaches, or take an art class, all while sampling the national food and culture.

KITE MECCA CLOSEST AIRPORT: Puerto Plata Gregorio Airport (POP).

TRANSPORT TO LOCATION: You can take public transportation for $5 per person, but we recommend taking a taxis for $50 because it is much faster and convenient. Once in Cabarete, you really do not need a car or motorcycle since everything is within walking distance, either by the main road or beach. If you are looking to save time and avoid walking, you can move around by public transportation, private taxis or motorcycle taxis. These methods of transportation start at $1 and can go up to $5 depending on the distance and number of people.

BEST SEASON: June-August is the ideal kiteboarding season.

DISTANCE TO LOCATION: The main kite spots are 25 minutes from the airport.

WIND RANGE: The wind ranges 12-25 knots in the winter time and 18-30 knots in the summertime.

WATER TEMPERATURE: Averages 80°F all year round with 85°F air temperature and wetsuits are typically not needed.

LOCAL RULES/SAFETY HAZARDS: Just follow the IKO Right of Way Rules and watch for typical safety hazards such as palm trees, beachgoers, swimmers, windsurfers and sailors.

LODGING RECOMMENDATIONS AND COSTS: You can find budget lodging at Hostel Laguna Park for $15/night with a 10-minute walk to the center of town and the basic bed, kitchen, and safe storage. Hotel Kaoba is one of the first hotels in Cabarete located in the center of town.

This hotel has an array of options to accommodate all needs starting at $30/night. Extreme Hotel is located on Kite Beach in Cabarete with a 15-minute walk to the center of town. The hotel has a gym, healthy green restaurant, circus trapeze and kite club on site for $50/night.

For those looking for higher-end lodging check out the Ocean Dream apartment complexes, offering studio apartments up to three bedroom beachfront apartments starting at $150/night. Villa Taina located near the center

of town on the beach is popular amongst windsurfers and kiteboarders with a spa, restaurant and windsurf/ kitesurf center for $150+/night. Viva Wyndham is the only all-inclusive hotel in Cabarete for $150+/night and is located centrally right on the beach.

For luxury accommodations, the Millenium Hotel, located right on the beach with it’s modern two and three bedroom apartments and two-story penthouses featuring Jacuzzi and expansive views of the kitesurfing action below, range from $150-720/night.

Sea Winds offers high-end condominiums located between kite beach and Cabarete beach, with its own upscale Italian restaurant and family-sized swimming pool area for $280-400/night. Ultraviolet is another complex offering big spacious apartments with two bathrooms and two small pools (one for the kids and one for adults) and a nice bar/restaurant on the beach for $180-300/night.

CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA

Cape Town is notorious for its hardcore southeasterly winds, affectionately known as the Cape Doctor, which has brought a growing number of kiteboarding pros to call Kite Beach in Table View their winter home for training. South Africa is one of the most consistently high wind locations in the world, so much so that Red Bull runs the annual King of The Air competition, where the top international big air athletes duke it out over massive mega loops for one of the sport’s most coveted titles. Cape Town has three major spots: Big Bay, Table View and Scarborough. There is generally never any shortage of wind in Cape Town because we are lucky enough to be situated on a peninsula where the wind is bound to be favorable somewhere. For those rare non-windy days and non-kitesurfers in your party, Cape Town delivers an abundance of surfing breaks, cable parks, national gardens, and reserves where you are able to spend a day in the mountains or on a wine farm.

DISTANCE TO LOCATION: It’s a 40-minute drive from CPT into town.

TRANSPORT TO LOCATION: For traveling around Cape Town, it’s best to rent a vehicle that can fit all your gear.

Seasonal rates can be as reasonable as $15 per day.

BEST SEASON: Nov-Feb are the best months for wind in Cape Town.

WIND RANGE: Generally, 12-35 knots average.

WATER TEMPERATURE: The water averages in the 60’s°F range in the winter months.

LOCAL RULES/SAFETY HAZARDS: The standard rules apply here; there are a variety of disciplines in this location, ranging from freestyle to big air and wave riding. There are quite a few beginners taking lessons and it’s advised that you ask around and know the rules as it can be quite a popular and crowded spot at times.

FEHMARN, GERMANY

With strong winds and 50 miles of coastline, the Island of Fehmarn in Germany is one of the most popular destinations in northern Europe. With kite spots around the island that take advantage of every wind angle, you can kite year round and find perfect flat water spots or hit some waves. This is one of the reasons Fehmarn is the home and R&D proving grounds of international brand Core Kiteboarding. By far the most iconic spot sits at the base of the Fehmarn Sound Bridge where the 3,159-foot structure connects Fehmarn Island to the German mainland.

KITE MECCA CLOSEST AIRPORT: Hamburg (HAM).

DISTANCE TO LOCATION: The kite spots are about an hour and 45 minutes from the airport.

TRANSPORT TO LOCATION: To get the true Fehmarn experience you will need a car. If you come by plane it’s easiest to get a rental car from the airport in Hamburg.

BEST SEASON: April-October is the windiest season.

WIND RANGE: Generally, it ranges from 12-40 knots.

WATER TEMPERATURE: The range is quite large; during the winter time water temps are in the low 50s°F and in the summer reaches 65°F. The air temp ranges from 59° to 70°F.

HATTERAS, NORTH CAROLINA

The Outer Banks is a long barrier island in the middle of the East Coast commonly referred to as Cape Hatteras but in reality, Cape Hatteras is only a small portion of the greater island. The Outer Banks features a large number of riding spots; Nags Head, Tri-Villages, Avon, Buxton and Frisco, all of which jut out into the Atlantic more than most parts of the East Coast. The Gulf Stream brings warm water up from the south and the continental shelf bends close to the shoreline so the water stays relatively warm and it picks up much more swell than other surf spots on the eastern seaboard. In the spring the ocean stays cool until about the first of June but the inland sounds are shallow and warm up quickly earlier in the season. March through May the wind varies between the SW and NE but is consistently ridable most days. During June and July the SW trade wind takes over and the sound temps soar into the 90s—this is when all the famous Hatteras ‘slick’ sessions take place. In August, the wind will be a bit lighter as the season transitions into the fall but as September nears, the NE wind fills back in and with more consistent swells; this is my favorite time of the year. Bottom line is the Outer Banks offers a huge variety of fun conditions throughout the majority of the year. And if you are really hardcore and don’t mind the cold, the winter sessions continue as the crowds die and any local will tell you that these can be some of the most special days of the year.

KITE MECCA CLOSEST AIRPORT: Norfolk (ORF) or Raleigh (RDU).

DISTANCE TO LOCATION: 2.5 hours from ORF and 4 hours from RDU. TRANSPORT TO LOCATION: Car rental is the way to go because shuttles are limited and cost about $175 from ORF. With a single road running the length of the island hitchhiking back upwind after a long downwinder is common as well.

BEST SEASON: May-July are primarily SW winds best for flat water sound-side riding and fall and spring are good for wave riding.

WIND RANGE: Varies greatly, generally 10-25 knots.

WATER TEMPERATURE: 60-70°F in the spring, upper 80’s°F in the summer and into the 40’s°F over winter.

LOCAL RULES/SAFETY HAZARDS: Kiteboarding is off limits in the Pea Island Wildlife Refuge south or Oregon Inlet to the beginning of Rodanthe. Be mindful of beachgoers and fisherman and give a wide berth when kiting around oceanside fishing piers. Also, be mindful of powerlines; the island is very narrow and many beach access points have high voltage power lines very near to where you may launch and land your kite.

LODGING RECOMMENDATIONS AND COSTS: Most people find houses through Airbnb or local real estate rental companies. Fair prices can be found on the shoulder season before Memorial Day or after Labor Day. Lots of people invite a group of kite friends and get a bigger house right on the water. Prices can range from under $2000 for the week to over $10,000 for the week for a waterfront house that you kite from. There is also Waterman’s Retreat at Real Kiteboarding and Waves Village at Kitty Hawk Kites with high-end waterfront condos and water access directly beyond your backyard with a 30-second walk from your room.

I might be naturally biased, as I grew up on the Outer Banks, but Hatteras is the more exposed southern part of the Outer Banks with the better kiteboarding, on the level with international kite destinations. The island is about 75 miles long running north to south with a bend right at the bottom and only a couple hundred yards wide on average. This means you can find flat water spots on ANY wind direction or jump over to the ocean and find a place with side-on or side-off wind. Hatteras provides options and in a given day you can ride in different conditions that otherwise you would have to travel far to find. From butter flat to quality surf, with onshore or offshore wind - you can essentially pick the setup you want to ride and go get it!

HOOD RIVER, OREGON

The small town of Hood River is a gem in the middle of the mighty Columbia River Gorge, situated at the confluence of Mount Hood’s glacial runoff into the Columbia River. As one of the windiest places in the US, the Gorge boasts 90 miles of kiteable river, its most popular spot being a 26-acre sandbar perfect for learning to kiteboard within walking distance of downtown. Located 59 miles east of Portland International Airport, the Gorge’s kite spots offer 10-35 knot breezes from June through August. The sandbar offers perfect flat water freestyle grounds and the river current creates zones of river swells that can grow to head high. Hood River is not just about the wind—there are a plethora of other activities which make this town a recreational hub year-round. There’s world-class mountain biking within a short distance of town, snowboarding on the glacier, as well as kayaking on many of the rivers and thousands of hikes throughout the wild and natural surroundings. With tons of locally crafted breweries and endless 5-star eateries, Hood River is no longer just North America’s premier kiteboarding destination, it is an actionsports mecca.

KITE MECCA CLOSEST AIRPORT: Portland International Airport (PDX).

DISTANCE TO LOCATION: Hood River is 50 minutes from PDX. TRANSPORT TO LOCATION: It is best to rent a car as there is a lot to see and do in the Gorge. Rentals can be found at PDX airport for $25-40 per day. It may also be worthwhile to check Craigslist or the app Turo for local rentals.

BEST SEASON: May-September is high season, but it can be good in the shoulder seasons if you don’t mind a little cold water.

WIND RANGE: 5-50 knots; depends on the day, time of year and river location.

WATER TEMPERATURE: The water can vary between 40-70°F water. Wetsuits are typically worn but can be skipped in the middle of summer.

LOCAL RULES/SAFETY HAZARDS: Hood River is known for its strong gusty winds and swift river current. Visitors should be aware the Columbia is a busy shipping corridor with large barge traffic that cannot steer around kiteboarders.

Some Gorge launches can be a bit dodgy, so ask around at local shops to determine the best locations for your skill level.

LODGING RECOMMENDATIONS AND COSTS: There is a dwindling supply of cheap accommodations in Hood River. For the absolute budget seeker, I would recommend camping because it almost never rains in the summer, and just outside of town there are several affordable campsites in the $15-20 range. There are some budget hotels, but they are slowly becoming more posh adventure lodges. Mid-range priced hotels in the area range from $85-110 per night for standard rooms and mostly offer nothing special. There are a plethora of highend rentals in town; you can expect to pay anywhere from $60 to $400 per night. However, the higher end houses are often 4-6 bedroom, so the cost can be split with additional travelers.

LA VENTANA, MEXICO

La Ventana has become one of the most popular winter destinations in North America for kiteboarders.

Thanks to the venturi effect between the Cacachilas mountains and the offshore Island of El Cerralvo, an accelerated thermal wind makes this place windy almost every day. The big beautiful bay is filled with turquoise water with tons of space for kiters of all skill levels. People are drawn to La Ventana not only for the wind, but also for its vibrant community. It’s a relaxed town filled with active people eager to help and happy to share kite stories while having a beer after a downwinder. Be sure to bring your jacket and sunscreen; it’s a desert climate with clear skies and consistent wind, warm during the day but with a slight chill at night. You will find great restaurants and live music in various bars around town, various charity events throughout the year along with the annual La Ventana Classic kite competition in January. La Ventana’s conditions are great for beginners, strapless freestyle and now there is a kite park with sliders at the bottom of the bay. There are endless mountain bike trails for the non-windy hours and with all the community and watersports activities available during the day, it’s likely you will be struggling to stay awake past Baja midnight (9pm).

KITE MECCA CLOSEST AIRPORT: La Paz airport (LAP) or San Jose del Cabo (SJD).

DISTANCE TO LOCATION: LAP is one hour and SJD is two hours by shuttle or car.

TRANSPORT TO LOCATION: We recommend an airport shuttle for (LAP $60/SJD $120) into La Ventana if you are staying at a hotel, but if you’re renting a house somewhere off the beaten track you will want a car.

BEST SEASON: Mid-October through mid-April.

WIND RANGE: 15-25 knots on average, with strong El Norte days hitting 35 knots.

LEUCATE, FRANCE

If people know anything about Leucate, it’s typically associated with the legendary Tramontane, a strong, cold, dry wind generated by pressure differences between the high pressure nestled over the north Atlantic and the low pressure over the Mediterranean. This airflow is channeled as it passes between the Pyrenees Mountains to the south and the high plateau of southern France’s Massif Central to the north. As the wind venturis through a large valley, the northwesterly accelerates past endless bucolic farmsteads before reaching the edge of the Mediterranean in Leucate. 40-knot days are the norm and the wind has a notorious reputation for driving people mad with its strength and consistency, so much so that entire forests of pine trees are coerced to grow at an angle. The Pyrenees mountains are an hour and a half drive away for spring skiing and the local town of La Franqui is a quiet hamlet that offers French culture at its finest. Leucate is always a destination on the world kiteboarding tour and offers riding all year long.

DISTANCE TO LOCATION: Toulouse is an hour and a half away and Perpignan is only a 30-minute drive.

TRANSPORT TO LOCATION: It’s highly recommended to rent a car at the airport because it will be easier to access the various spots and significantly cheaper than hiring a taxi.

WIND RANGE: Generally 20-30 knots but you can have some days with lighter wind in summer.

Costs average around $60-80 per night, but it’s possible to find something cheaper. For those looking for more luxury accommodations, five minutes in Leucate City you can find Le19/21. This is a really nice hotel with a swimming pool on the roof and all high-end services ranging from $170 per night in low season and $300 per night in the summer season.

TARIFA, SPAIN

Incredible food, hip bars and relentless wind. Tarifa offers all this and more in the most chilled out atmosphere ever. Sitting at the Strait of Gibraltar where the Atlantic and Mediterranean meet, Tarifa is the mecca of windsports in Europe. The vibe is very international with kiters from all over the world and the locals are really friendly and will always make you feel comfortable and welcome. Tarifa has wind all year round. During the winter it gets colder but still offers one of the warmest climates in Europe. We get storms with strong winds and big waves and even quite a lot of sunny days. If you want some peace and quiet and are looking for some tranquility, you can find really beautiful areas outside of town including a river with a cliff jump just 15 minutes from Tarifa, hiking in the mountains with incredible views, or mountain biking. Tarifa also offers a rich cultural experience with its beautiful old town square and castle walls. If you are looking for vibrant nightlife, it gets really busy in the summer with big parties that have a unique Tarifa vibe.

KITE MECCA CLOSEST AIRPORT: Malaga (AGP).

DISTANCE TO LOCATION: One hour and 45 minutes by car/taxi, or you can take a bus if you’re on a budget.

TRANSPORT TO LOCATION: While everything is fairly close by, you need a rental car in Tarifa to have the complete experience. Cars can be rented in Tarifa, but cheaper rentals can be found in Malaga for $16-25 a day.

BEST SEASON: The wind blows during the entire year in Tarifa! April/May through September is the high season and if you’re more of a wave rider, you’ll prefer to come during the winter season as the swell is much larger.

WIND RANGE: Generally 15-35 knots.

WATER TEMPERATURE: From 61°F during the winter and up to 75°F in the summer months.

LOCAL RULES/SAFETY HAZARDS: There are no special safety regulations here other than standard kiteboarding rules and common sense. During the summer there may be designated swimming and kiteboarding zones you will need to observe.

LODGING RECOMMENDATIONS AND COSTS: You have many choices depending on your budget. For economy travelers on a tight budget, there are a few hostels that start at around $20/night (www.pensionfacundo.com / La Cocotera / The Melting Point) For a medium budget I personally recommend a hostel called Banti. It’s located on the Estrecho Nature Reserve and has a cool chill out garden with a patio and a gear washing area. Each room has its own private bathroom and there’s an onsite restaurant where you can get breakfast for $4. At just $48-71/night depending on the season you go, it’s a pretty sweet deal. La Residencia Tarifa is a moderately upscale property situated directly at the port and offers a breathtaking view over the Straight of Gibraltar and the old town of Tarifa. It has everything from ground floor apartments to penthouse suites starting from $125/night. There’s a number of great hotels as well; check out Hurricane Hotel, Punta Sur or Silos 18. Otherwise, you’ll find lots more possibilities on Trip Advisor or Airbnb. If you’re traveling with a group or want a really nice place to stay, there are many cool villas in the area for rent.

BELLS BEACH, AUSTRALIA

Whether you chase big or small waves, the iconic Bells Beach has some of the better and more consistent wave conditions to offer in the Victoria, Australia area. Bells is a right-hand rocky point break which will hold anything from 2-15 feet, often becoming a world-class performance wave anywhere from the 6 foot and above range. If an open face right-hand wave is what you’re looking for then this spot can give you everything you need. The water is usually a bit chilly and I typically recommend a long steamer; even if the water is a little warmer, the southerly winds tend to add the cold right back into it. Even on the coldest days, it’s hard to turn down a perfect right-hander. During summer the afternoon sea breeze usually kicks in around 20 knots with typically smaller waves on offer, around the 2-4 foot range, which means a fun session without much risk involved.

DISTANCE TO LOCATION: Bells Beach is about an hour and 20 minutes from the airport.

Essaouira is an incredibly diverse destination that offers so many choices for kiteboarders of all levels.

If you are a kiteboarder or a surfer, and no matter your level, you will always find the perfect spot in Essaouira. From beach breaks to point breaks with perfect, thermal, side-shore winds, you can always find the right size waves by starting in the protected bay near the town or by moving south for bigger waves. The Medina of Essaouira is one of the calmest and nicest town centers in all of Morocco. With its less intimidating vibe compared to other areas in the country, you will always feel safe here among the mixed crowd of expats, locals, and predominantly European tourists. Essaouira offers visitors a small town Morrocan feeling with tons of kiteboarding options to suit every skill level and style of kiteboarding.

WAVE CLOSEST AIRPORT: Essaouira (ESU), Marrakech (RAK) or Agadir (AGA).

DISTANCE TO LOCATION: It’s about 15 minutes from Essaouira Airport and about two and a half hours from both Marrakech and Agadir airports.

FLORIANOPOLIS, BRAZIL

Located at the southern part of Brazil’s expansive coastline, the Florianópolis and Ibiraquera regions are unique destinations for those who are seeking a wave-driven kite trip but also have an open mind to explore Brazil’s off the beaten path. With many beaches and wind setups to choose from, the area offers a very wide range of wave riding options based on the wind and swell conditions of the day.

You will find pure side-shore wind at the beach of Ibiraquera, one of the best wave riding spots on the entire coastline. With long lined up left-handers sheltered by a little island and an upwind peninsula that smoothes the wave faces from the NE wind (the most predominant during the windy season), it has an ideal set up for a very smooth and fun ride. If punchy and hollow A-frames is what you are are looking for, then head to the beach of Campeche, where the south winds come with cold fronts that also bring good swells. The wind hits the beach side-onshore for the perfect angle to explore tube riding on the peaky right-handers. There are many other kiting options around these two pearls of the region, including a few flat water spots with good school and kite clubs that provide access and infrastructure inside the lagoons (Gokite, IKC Kite Center, Porto Jerivá, Kite e Surf School). This region also offers great quality surfing, surf foiling and outdoor activities, such as superb walking tracks, waterfalls or even sky diving and cables just a few minutes from the beach. A very fun and exciting nightlife adds to the whole scene for those who will have energy left over from the day’s activities.

FUERTEVENTURA

Fuerteventura is famous for its laidback lifestyle and world-class waves. The climate is super consistent all year round with over 300 days of sun every year with nearly no rain at all. Summertime is the main season for kitesurfing because of the predominant trade winds. In the winter the Atlantic swell creates perfect waves for surfing with or without the kite all around the island. There’s plenty of nowind sports like mountain biking, hiking, paragliding and a large list of watersports such as diving, sailing, windsurfing, surfing, and SUP. With plenty of big sandy beaches with different colored sands, there is plenty to do for the non-kiteboarder in the family. Fuerteventura is a kitesurfing paradise that every wave kiter needs to cross off the bucket list at some point.

WAVE CLOSEST AIRPORT: Puerto del Rosario (FUE).

DISTANCE TO LOCATION: The airport is about 35 minutes from the main spot.

TRANSPORT TO LOCATION: To properly explore the island it is highly recommended that you rent a car to get to the different kite spots. Rental cars are strikingly cheap on the island, starting from just $12/day.

BEST SEASON: May-August is the high season for wind and the winter is the best time for swell.

WIND RANGE: The wind ranges from 15-30 knots on average.

WATER TEMPERATURE: In the wintertime, the water averages 64°F and many wear a 3/2 wetsuit. In the summer months, the water is around 75°F with most people wearing boardshorts or a shorty.

LOCAL RULES/SAFETY HAZARDS: Fuerteventura is a volcanic island, so there are lots of rocks at nearly all spots that you need to watch out for. If you go to a surf spot be sure to respect the locals.

LODGING RECOMMENDATIONS AND COSTS: There are plenty of surf hostels around Corralejo starting at $12/night. There are also lots of houses renting a private room or apartment on Airbnb at various prices downtown.

If you are looking for a more quiet atmosphere then look in Lajares, Villa Verde or Cotillo. You can book a hotel room at Atlantis Bahia Real in Corralejo for $190/night with its five-star hotel rooms on the beach with beautiful views over the bay and close proximity to Flag Beach, the main kite spot.

LE MORNE, MAURITIUS

Mauritius is an island in the Indian Ocean situated east of Madagascar. The population is a great mix between Indian, African and European roots. They are the most welcoming people I’ve met and there is so much to discover here from food and wildlife to religion, culture and landscapes. The best place to kitesurf and SUP in Mauritius is Le Morne. This area combines the trade winds with consistent swells and delivers perfect side to side-off kitesurfing conditions at the legendary waves of One Eye and Manawa. Le Morne can be a great place to progress your wave riding skills because you can start at the more friendly Manawa break and then progress into kitesurfing the more hollow and aggresive One Eye. It can get crowded in the good season but you can always find a place to yourself in the huge transparent lagoon.

WAVE CLOSEST AIRPORT: Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU).

DISTANCE TO LOCATION: 1 hour, 12minutes; 35 miles TRANSPORT TO LOCATION: Book a taxi from your hotel to get a better price and a not-so-fast-and-furious driver!

BEST SEASON: July-November WIND RANGE: Averages 20-30 knots. Trade winds are getting stronger once arriving at the tip of the island, so expect more than what’s forecasted.

WATER TEMPERATURE: 75°F LOCAL RULES/SAFETY HAZARDS: One Eye’s reef is pretty aggressive and shallow and there are some reef rocks in the lagoon but the most dangerous thing out there is the current. Learn how it works before going out; the main pass works like a river and you don’t want to be out at sunset with tangled lines. Don’t kite after 6pm as the wind usually dies and the safety boat has already finished for the day.

LODGING RECOMMENDATIONS AND COSTS: If you’re looking for cheap lodging, stay in La Gaulette which is a small village near Le Morne. You will have to take a ride to the beach (12min – 6 miles) every day, but you can get rates as cheap as $53/night.

Lodging in Le Morne is quite expensive as it is a luxury destination. We always stay at the Riu Creole because it is a great hotel and also the most convenient; your room is 65 feet away from the spot and depending on its location, you might even be able to leave your gear outside of it (even kite inflated!) with no issues.

On the west side of Le Morne you will find fancy hotels like Lux, St Regis and Dinarobin. MAUI, HAWAII

Maui has been a kiting destination from the very beginning. With warm water and consistent trade winds nearly year-round, there is every type of condition available with great down-the-line wave riding, flat water freestyle and everything in between no matter what your skill set. Kanaha is the primary kite beach with plenty of space for everyone on the water, a big white sand beach and mellow shore break making launching and landing easy. Kanaha has to be one of the most scenic places to kite with great views of Haleakala to the east and the Iao Valley to the west. Being one of the top vacation destinations in the world, Maui offers literally hundreds of non-wind activities for when the wind dies or you just need a day off the water. Water temps are in the mid 70’s so no wetsuit is required, although a spring suit or neoprene top isn’t a bad idea to bring for fighting wind chill. Don’t expect too much nightlife because Maui midnight hits hard after a long day of activities on the water.

WAVE CLOSEST AIRPORT: Kanaha Maui Airport (OGG).

DISTANCE TO LOCATION: Since you can literally see kites in the air at Kanaha from Arrivals, it’s probably less than a mile.

TRANSPORT TO LOCATION: You’re definitely going to need a rental car to explore Maui, and most lodging options won’t have kiteboarding beach access. Maui has all the big companies and some local cheaper options as well.

BEST SEASON: March-November is the windy season with December, January, and February typically having few windy days. If you come in June you can compete or just have a great time at the Maui Kitefest.

WIND RANGE: Maui’s trade winds are pretty consistent, usually in the 15-25 knot range with some higher wind days. Most people get away with a 7m and 9m quiver.

WATER TEMPERATURE: Averages 70s°F with air temps from low 70s-90s°F during the summer. Boardshorts in the summer; spring suits or a neoprene top come in handy in the late fall/winter.

LOCAL RULES/SAFETY HAZARDS: Take your time getting to the beach as there’s no kiting before 11 am (to avoid conflict with surfers, fishermen, and divers) nor is there any kiting allowed within the FAA regulated airspace, so stay downwind or upwind of the airport. If you’re going for a downwinder, stay about a mile out to sea when crossing through the FAA zone and pass through quickly. Kanaha is the easiest launch; some other beaches may require greater skill. LODGING RECOMMENDATIONS AND COSTS: It’s worth mentioning that there is no nearby camping and while most Airbnb listings are illegal, there are plenty to be found. Most hotels will be $90/night and you will find a number of condo and hotel options on the south side in Kihei for $100/night, but be sure to ask about a kitchen. You can rent a 1-2 bedroom house or condo for $300-$400/night. Maui has no shortage of luxury lodging and boasts some of the nicest resorts in the world. If you have the budget, Maui likely has a spot that will check everything off the must-have-list. Most luxury places run $1,000+/night.

MANCORA, PERU

Mancora is called ‘the Peruvian Caribbean’ for its paradisiacal beach, turquoise water and because it is blessed by a seemingly endless summer. There is one major difference from the Caribbean though: The Peruvian north shore opens its arms to both south and north Pacific swells with periods of 18 to 22 seconds, hosting perfect long left-hand waves. This desert coastline is also exceptional as the westernmost point of Latin America, straddling the meeting point of two ocean currents, the Humboldt and the Equatorial’s, creating thermal winds almost every day at noon like clockwork. The main kite spot in Mancora consists of choppy conditions, with plenty of space for freeriding and kiting the shore break, and if it’s not too crowded with surfers, you can kite Mancora’s perfect point break. Lobitos is one-hour south of Mancora—this is one of the most famous surf towns in Peru, with seven surf points. Lobitos point break is a long wave which works best around September when the sandbanks get perfect.

DISTANCE TO LOCATION: The airport is a little over an hour’s drive to Mancora.

BEST SEASON: May-August averages 9m-12m kites and August-December averages 7m-12m conditions. There are waves all year round but statistics show swells peaks in May, June, July, and October. If you are looking for the best kitesurfing you should avoid December and January.

WIND RANGE: 15-30 knots.

WATER TEMPERATURE: During April-November it averages between 63-73°F (full suit 3/2 to shorty 2/2) and December-March it averages 72-84°F (boardshorts and rashguard). Days are hot and dry and evenings cool down considerably.

LOCAL RULES/SAFETY HAZARDS: There can be many surfers in the water; be aware of surfing etiquette and give surfers right of way. When it’s too crowded, especially at Lobitos, move to another point.

LODGING RECOMMENDATIONS AND COSTS: Accommodations are plentiful and offer a wide range to suit any budget, from $5/night to $500/night. First choose if you prefer to stay in Mancora, where the surf and kite spot are close to the downtown, or in Las Pocitas, a gorgeous beach 10 minutes away, where you will find the most beautiful hotels and hideaways for those looking to disconnect.

With over 2600 miles of wave-rich Pacific Ocean coastline, Chile is a wave-kiters paradise. There are countless wave spots and the best about them? Pretty much all spots are totally uncrowded.

Chile’s untouched nature creates a spectacular environment and if you follow the simple recipe; eatkite-sleep-repeat, then you will have the perfect kite trip. Matanzas is a tiny authentic fishing village beautifully situated on the hilly coast just 100 miles from Chile’s capital of Santiago. Its single main street runs parallel to a long black volcanic beach, lined with some really good restaurants, a number of accommodation options and a few shopping facilities. During the week the town is super quiet, but come the weekend it’s pumping with people from Santiago flocking to the coast to enjoy the sun, beach and ocean. The area around Matanzas is ‘in’ and many wealthy Chileans own their piece of paradise with spectacular architect-designed holiday homes in the hills. Surrounded by several top kite spots, Matanzas is the perfect base for wave kitesurfers. During the Chilean holiday season (Jan-Feb) it can get busy, but throughout the rest of the year the village is quiet and offers a lot of space on the beach and in the waves. Head south out of Matanzas to Pupuya, the most friendly kite beach which is also the home to the stylish La Lobera Kite Club, a kind of Café del Mar for kiters. An interesting architectural structure made out of a lot of glass and wood offers superb views of the spot from the restaurant and bar. And for those seeking more adventure, there are many unknown kite and world-famous surf spots like Punta de Lobos along the deserted coastline.

WAVE CLOSEST AIRPORT: Comodoro Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport (SCL) aka Santiago International Airport.

DISTANCE TO LOCATION: An hour and a half from the airport.

TRANSPORT TO LOCATION: It’s possible to explore Chile by public transport due to a good bus network, however, you would need a lot of patience and time, plus you would miss out on seeing/kiting a large number of spots. A rental car is definitely the way to go. I suggest Chilean Rent a Car (www.chileanrentacar.cl) with a wide range of different vehicles in their fleet, several depots and the best prices.

BEST SEASON: September-April is the high season with Surazo south winds best in November-December. Swell runs all year long but is the smallest in January/February.

WIND RANGE: 20-25 knots, but often more!

WATER TEMPERATURE: 53°F to 64°F depending on the season, 5/4 full suit with booties and hood recommended.

Days can be warm, nights are always cool.

LOCAL RULES/SAFETY HAZARDS: Familiarize yourself well with wave etiquette and respect the local windsurfers (there are heaps more windsurfers here than kitesurfers) due to strong cross-off and often pretty gusty wind. If you are not so confident or experienced in cross-offshore conditions, head to Pupuya, about a mile south of Matanzas.

This beach offers a lot of space with a cross-onshore wave playground for intermediate and advanced kitesurfers, and a small waist high lagoon with knee-deep water perfect for beginners to make their first steps and good strapless freestyle conditions when the waves are small.

LODGING RECOMMENDATIONS AND COSTS: For the budget minded traveler, the Roca Cuadrada Hotel offers clean rooms directly on the beach with dorm beds starting at $25/night. Check out Airbnb, or go straight to www.centineladematanzas.cl to book an architect designed villa directly on top of the cliffs at the spot of Roca Cuadrada with private access to the beach starting at $100 /night. Alba Hotel Boutique, starting at $130/night, located right on the beach in Matanzas with a yummy

BEST SEASON: April-October is the windiest season and the window of Solosports’ operation.

LOCAL RULES/SAFETY HAZARDS: With so much space there are few rules to follow, outside of basic wave kiting etiquette. San Carlos has offshore wind and rocky launches so this is not a place for beginner kiters. Solosports staff is on hand to assist guest’s launching and landing, and if you get into trouble, there is a local fisherman’s boat that can rescue you or your gear for a small fee.

LODGING RECOMMENDATIONS AND COSTS: There is only one commercial outfit in Punta San Carlos and that is Solosports. If you sign up for a Solosports week you get a deluxe tent with a double sleeping pad, pillows, sleeping bags, hot showers, and email access. You get unlimited access to the latest kite, windsurf, SUP, surf and bikes. While you get three meals per day, plus unlimited snacks and drinks—it is glamping with pit-style outhouses that is ‘luxurious’ for the outdoorsy adventurous type. For self-supported campers, there is a nightly camping fee that goes to the local village. Campers should plan to bring all supplies both in and out and be forewarned that it’s often super windy at the site; a tent can become a ‘dungeon of hell’ if you don’t plan accordingly.

Barbados really captures the classic Caribbean island vibe with good kitesurfing opportunities while being within easy access of the US East Coast. The kiting is consistent and convenient at Silver Sands, with waves on the outside and flatter water on the inside. The water is beautiful tones of aquamarine and the beaches shine with brilliant white sands, great nightlife and everything in between. With a little bit of luck, the surf can offer some of the best breaks in all of the Caribbean, and when there isn’t a big swell in the water you can still score amazing beginner and longboard waves that break nearly every single day.

FLAT WATER CLOSEST AIRPORT: Grantley Adams International (BGI).

DISTANCE TO LOCATION: 10 minutes to Silver Sands.

TRANSPORT TO LOCATION: The public transportation on the island is very accessible with tons of public buses.

There are public and private bus routes that run from Bridgetown, the capital in the south of the island, to Silver Sands. If you are staying in any of the nice villas along the west coast of the island, there is a separate bus line down from Bridgetown. While the island is small and the bus system works great and is very cheap (even with a kite and board in hand) they are slow and make many stops and can easily take 1-2 hour or more to get to where you need to go even if it is only 10-15 miles away. Cars can be rented at the airport as well or you can hire a taxi but you will burn a hole in your wallet fast if you are relying on cabs. It is easy to stay near the main kite spot as well if you want to limit driving time and expense.

BEST SEASON: December-June is the windy season.

WIND RANGE: 15-20 knots.

WATER TEMPERATURE: 82°F year round which doesn’t require a wetsuit, just sun protection.

LOCAL RULES/SAFETY HAZARDS: Don’t end up downwind of Rescue Beach as the island bends there and it is your last good downwind exit from Silver Sands.

LODGING RECOMMENDATIONS AND COSTS: For more budget-minded rentals, look a few blocks back from the beach houses. You can stay relatively close to the water and save a bit of money with Airbnb and other local listings for options from $30-$80/night range. There are good waterfront apartment and villa rental options in the Silver Sands/Silver Rock area that are all within walking distance of each other and a quick Google search will reveal most of the options. Many of these are waterfront, some with a pool and most have some form of food service as well if you do not want to venture out to eat.

I recommend Ocean Spray Beach Apartments which is where Kitesurf Int’l operates out of—they have an ideal waterfront location and are only a short distance from your main kiting beaches. Most of these rentals will be in the

Bermuda is great because of its unique kiteboarding, vibrant culture and truly friendly locals. There are a few main kite spots on the island, including Somerset Long Bay and Elbow Beach, but you need to know the wind direction to chase down a good session. There is a small but dedicated crew of locals that are extremely talented at reading the wind and the local kite shop can also point you in the right direction. For those no wind kite days you can go snorkel at any of the numerous pristine beaches, take a bike tour of the island or explore the historical town of St. George. On Bermuda you’re bound to make fast friends and after a day of riding, you just might find yourself at a new friend’s house, sharing beers around a fresh fish BBQ.

Lake Calima is the perfect kiteboarding destination situated around the small town of Darien. Colombia is a country full of culture, colors, music, and delicious food, but what makes this spot awesome is that it has wind 365 days of the year. Ranging from 20-25 knots and sometimes gusty, Calima kiters most often fly 8 or 10-meter kites on a twin tip. Often you will see foilers launch in the morning before the wind picks up or in the afternoon with smaller size kites. If there’s no wind, one can always visit the city of Cali and take some salsa lessons, eat at nice restaurants or simply enjoy the nature around the lake by paddle boarding, hiking beautiful mountains, mountain biking or going to the rivers nearby.

DISTANCE TO LOCATION: An hour and 30 minutes from the airport.

TRANSPORT TO LOCATION: You can rent a car, but the local town of Darien is very small and easy to walk around.

To get to the lake you can take the Transcalima bus via Cali for $5; this same bus can take you from the town of Darien to the kiteboarding schools nearby for a $1.

BEST SEASON: Lake Calima has wind all year round, just try to avoid the rainy season which is March-May because there is no wind when it is raining.

WIND RANGE: 20-25 knots.

WATER TEMPERATURE: 70°F in the winter months with hot air temperature that will be perfect for a shorty.

LOCAL RULES/SAFETY HAZARDS: Generally, the temperature ranges from 65°F to 78°F. On the warm days, you can ride with a shorty and on the cold days, a 3/2 wetsuit is recommended.

LOCAL RULES/SAFETY HAZARDS: It’s recommended to launch from one of the kite schools as they have boats in case a rescue is needed and they will keep an eye on you while riding. Otherwise, there’s only one other public access to the lake, but if something happens you’re on your own.

There are different budgets but you can find houses ranging from $500/month to $2,000/month, ideally, you should look around Confandi. DISTANCE TO LOCATION: It’s 10 minutes from Trapani or one hour from Palermo.

The Solomon Islands is a remote country in the southwest Pacific made up of 993 Islands scattered across a broad archipelago. It contains some of the most beautiful islands and diverse cultures speaking over 70 distinct languages. With a fascinating role in ancient and modern history, the Solomon Islands are largely isolated from the outside world. With only about 6000 tourists per year, this is truly ‘off the beaten track.’ Here, you feel like you are on a different planet—each island is adrift in time, it’s a country where modernity has seemingly passed by. The Solomon Islands is Discovery Channel LIVE everywhere you turn with remarkable biodiversity, containing thousands of different plant and animal species, many of them endemic. Due to the country’s remoteness and untouched nature, navigating and getting around can be difficult. Few, if any kitesurfers have ever visited this incredibly special place, and in turn, this is one of the few places in the world where you can become a true pioneer. If kitesurfing islands that no other kitesurfer has put his/her feet on before in a place with consistent trade winds (in the right season) sounds like the adventure you’ve been looking for, then begin your preparations for a mind-bending experience in the ‘Hapi Isles.’

FLAT WATER CLOSEST AIRPORT: Honiara International Airport (HIR). Solomon Airlines is the national carrier and flies to Honiara from Brisbane and Sydney several times per week. There are also codeshare connections from Nadi, Port Vila, Kiribati, Nauru, and PNG. Virgin Australia also flies direct from Brisbane.

TRANSPORT TO LOCATION: Getting around in the Solomons isn’t easy. Depending on your island of destination, you will have to arrange a series of airplane and boat transfers. Solomon Airlines offer connections from Honiara (the capital) to most of the other islands.

Domestic air travel is extremely expensive. Check Solomon Airline’s website before you go, so you understand the budget you will need to travel in the Solomons. If you have time, traveling by boat is always an option and much cheaper.

BEST SEASON: June-September is the best season for kitesurfing with the highest chances to catch consistent sea breezes. The country does have two distinct seasons—a wet season from November-April and a dry season from May-October.

WIND RANGE: It really depends on where you go but as a rule of thumb, the eastern islands are windier than the west. Gizo, the capital of the western province, boasts picture-perfect playgrounds for flat-water kiting and endless downwinders, yet the west is a light wind area (bring big kites or a foilboard). The west, for example, the Star Harbour area/Ulawa-Makira Province, is much windier and you could be flying 7m kites when it’s on.

WATER TEMPERATURE: Averages 82°F year-round.

The Solomon Islands have an equatorial/tropical climate, meaning it is usually hot and humid all year round.

LOCAL RULES/SAFETY HAZARDS: You will likely be the only kiteboarder on the water and you may need to ask permission to kite on small privately owned islands.

It never hurts to bring thoughtful gifts for interactions with the local islanders and to open the dialogue for local information.

SOMA BAY, EGYPT

Soma Bay is a solid choice for anyone looking to ride consistently windy and flat water with great amenities that are easily accessible. For those holiday seekers looking fora turnkey destination, there’s a wide variety of luxury resorts to stay at and a centralized kite center for all your daily kitesurfing needs. Surrounded from all sides by the pristine waters of the Red Sea, the beautiful long sandy beaches are a call to relaxation, and amazing mountains and desert landscapes give the location a dramatic backdrop. There’s a decent amount of fellow kite travelers so it’s also a good place to make new friends on and off the water. About 5 km in length and 2 km wide, the peninsula is accessed via a 7 km private road through a single controlled entry gate. You will find nighttime entertainment at the resorts as well as a high-end spa, but above all else, the main attraction is the steady wind at the kite spot.

FLAT WATER CLOSEST AIRPORT: Hurghada International Airport (HRG).

DISTANCE TO LOCATION: It’s approximately a 30-40 minute drive from Hurghada to Soma Bay Resorts.

TRANSPORT TO LOCATION: From the airport, you can get a taxi or arrange a shuttle with your hotel. If you are staying in Soma Bay there are shuttles that run between the hotels, the spa and the kite spot all day, every day, so there is no need to rent a car. If you want to venture outside of the resort it is easy to organize a taxi or shuttle.

BEST SEASON: The season runs from February-October, but you will find the steadiest winds March-May and the strongest winds June-September. The wind is the best in the morning and often dies around 2-3pm. On the windiest days, it will blow until sunset.

WIND RANGE: Ranging from 18-25 knots June-September and averaging 15-22 knots March-May.

WATER TEMPERATURE: It averages 68-77°F in the spring and 85-93°F during the summer, while the fall cools back down to 77-86°F. LOCAL RULES/SAFETY HAZARDS: You can’t kite right in front of where the hotels are so you will take the shuttle daily to the 7bft Kite House, which runs all day so you can come and go easily. Once you get to the Kite House you will check in with reception and they will let you know about where the swimming area is along with the launching/landing zones. Since the wind blows offshore, beginners should start with a lesson from the Kite House.

LODGING RECOMMENDATION AND COST: The Breakers Soma Bay is a good value accommodation with nice rooms, good quality food included and nightly entertainment for $90/night. The Breakers has a nice pool, gym, and sports center where you can get snorkeling gear to explore the reef located just in front of the hotel. For those looking for more high-end accommodations check out the Kempinski Hotel which offers gourmet meals and other high-end amenities ranging from $115-$2000/night.

HEL PENINSULA, POLAND

The Hel Peninsula consists of one of the biggest beginner-friendly lagoons in Poland. The waist-deep lagoon is over a half mile across at some points with shallow clear water, a sandy bottom, and no reefs.

There’s no significant tidal changes, no sharks and a ton of space to kiteboard, all of which makes this place perfect for beginners and intermediate riders. If you go to the other side of the peninsula you can access the open Baltic Sea, where you can find fun waves for kitesurfing. This spot works in all wind directions—with north and northeast winds you need to cross the street and go to the open sea where you can find more waves. The best and most common wind direction is west, and this is clear side-shore wind from the left side. The campsite Chałupy 6 offers live concerts with the hottest Polish music artists on weekends, with stand up comedians once a week, and each year features the best Polish movie festival called Docs Against Gravity. With beachside camping, user-friendly kiteboarding and tons of events to keep you entertained, the Hel Peninsula has become one of the top European kite destinations for a good reason.

DISTANCE TO LOCATION: It’s one and a half hour drive to the beach.

TRANSPORT TO LOCATION: The best way to get to the spot from the airport is with a rental car, although you can take a train from any of the main Polish cities that drops you off in front of the camp spot. Rental cars can be had for $40-50/day.

BEST SEASON: June-August are the best months but for those diehard local kiters that don’t mind the winter time minus temperatures, it can be kited all year long. The wind here is based on weather and doesn’t have a daily thermal.

WIND RANGE: 13-25 knots.

WATER TEMPERATURE: The bay side is generally between 68-85°F and the ocean ranges between 57-77°F. People often wear boardshorts or a 3/2 in Puck Bay, but in the Baltic Sea, a 3/2 or 4/3 wetsuit is recommended. We have your typical eastern Europe weather! MANTA, ECUADOR

At first glance parts of Ecuador seem a bit barren because of its dry and arid climate east of the Andes, yet this South American country is surprisingly elegant. It’s almost as if you took Baja, Mexico and mixed it with the steep cliffs of the Columbia Gorge. The more time you spend with the people of this country you realize what a beautiful thriving culture and stunning landscape Ecuador really is. Everyone is beyond friendly and the food is amazing; Manta is the second largest tuna exporter behind Japan so you can always find fresh fish and ceviche cheaper than a lobster dinner in Maine.

There are tons of great restaurants with great atmosphere, cool art and a menu to match, as well as ice cream shops, yoga studios and clothing shops, clubs, bars, a variety of hotels and villas to choose from starting at $25 a night. For the non-kiters and no wind days, there are lots of beach activities— scuba diving, surfing, day trips to waterfalls and forest adventures. Manta is an incredible destination in its own right but on top of that its predominantly sunny days build a solid thermal from the deep cool ocean and hot dry land which fills in about mid-morning for an incredibly reliable wind pattern.

MASIRAH ISLAND, OMAN

If Oman is not on your radar as a kite destination, it should be. Oman is situated in the Persian Gulf, just off the Arabian Sea with year-round wind, beautiful water and an exotic culture marked by warm hospitality. Oman is an extremely safe country with zero terrorism and nearly zero crime. There is wind to be found year round, but the monsoon season from mid-April to August is most sought after for high winds and usually guaranteed kiting. The shores outlining Oman provide many kite locations, but if you are looking for the best flat water and wave spots, head to Masirah Island. Sur Masirah is the primary kite spot here with warm, shallow, flat water for days—perfect for kitespeed, freestyle, free ride, and beginners. With camels, flamingos, and goats welcoming you on the beach, it’s the perfect background for some awesome kite pics. Oman does require a travel visa and while Oman is a somewhat conservative country, western visitors are not required to abide by a dress code. Women can wear shorts, however, you will likely get some initial stares from the locals. There is a lot of ancient history here, as well as many tourist locations scattered across the country. Whether you are dodging camels on the road, kiting, or exploring hidden treasures, Oman has something for everyone.

Namotu has been a top travel destination for surfers, windsurfers, kiters, and fishermen for years because it’s located at the heart of world-class waves with a trade wind season that runs from May through October. Staying on Namotu puts a lot of options at your fingertips; with the island’s surf boats at your disposal, you can session miles of flat water kiting and long downwinders, as well as incredible kite foiling and foilsurfing. Namotu offers super friendly staff, incredible food and it’s small— just 24 guests. If there’s no wind you won’t get bored because there is always something going on.

The island has surf guides to ensure the party rolls on from Cloudbreak starting at 6am all the way to the notorious skull drag after dark.

DISTANCE TO LOCATION: It takes about one and a half hours from the airport to the island, first by car then boat.

TRANSPORT TO LOCATION: Transfers to and from the island require a bit of driving and a boat ride; both are included in the package.

WIND RANGE: Generally 15-25 knots in the windy season.

WATER TEMPERATURE: 70-75°F water temperatures and 77-90°F air temperatures typically requires a 1mm top or for some a spring suit.

LOCAL RULES/SAFETY HAZARDS: Watch the reef, respect the locals, listen to surf guides and respect the environment.

LODGING RECOMMENDATIONS AND COSTS: Although there are some budget options on the mainland you’ll need to arrange your surf boat separately and you won’t be able to launch your kite off Namotu Island unless you’re a guest so be prepared to boat launch. The nearest places on the mainland (Viti Levu) to surf breaks and kite spots are still about a 30min + boat trip away so make sure you’ve got your forecast and dialed and understand the conditions—tides, currents, swell and period so you know what to expect. For these exact reasons, Namotu Island starts at about $3500/pp for 7 days, but this includes all your transfers, meals and unlimited use of surf boats and you can kite Namotu lefts and flat water right off the resort’s beach.

Other locations do not offer this convenience or inclusions so make sure you add up how much these extras will cost elsewhere. Kite Weeks come in higher than a standard Namotu week but also come with more inclusions such as equipment, photography, upgraded food, Ben’s instruction and the option to take beginner surf/SUP/kite lessons.

PEI, CANADA

Prince Edward Island (PEI) is a hidden gem for kitesurfing. The island is filled with untouched kite spots from flat water to waves. The most popular kite beach on PEI is Malpeque Bay, known for its unique point sticking out into the bay opening up 270° of potential kiteboarding onshore winds with very beginner friendly, shallow flat water riding. PEI has something for every skill level of rider and Malpeque is just the tip of the iceberg for kite spots on the island. Be sure to try the local seafood— lobster and oysters are a must, with a large number of restaurants in nearby Cavendish, or eat quite economically from the local grocery store. For those non-windy days, you can enjoy SUP/surfing, cross-country mountain biking, wakeboarding, fishing, sightseeing and plenty more.

WATER TEMPERATURE: 64°F in the summer season with air temps ranging from the 70’s-80’s°F, but in the shoulder seasons, a full wetsuit is needed for the north breeze days.

LOCAL RULES/SAFETY HAZARDS: It’s always a good idea to speak to locals on arrival and get a sense of the local setup and current conditions. Malpeque has a small oyster bed nearby that can be dangerous for those who don’t know it is there.

LODGING RECOMMENDATIONS AND COSTS: For the budget-minded traveler, check out Cabot Park Camping with its convenient location on the north shore near Malpeque Bay. This site offers easy access to several kite spot and nearby surfing beaches. For higher-end options, there’s the Kite View Resort (KVR) located near Malpeque Bay with single bedroom duplex cottages starting at $64/ night. If you’re traveling with non-kiteboarders, you can head 20 minutes east to the Cavendish area, which is a bit more touristy while offering prime activities and stunning beaches.

PUERTO RICO

Puerto Rico might be one of the lesser-known kiteboarding destinations in the Caribbean but it is one of the most diverse by far. Instead of just having one or two main kite spots on the island it offers tons of different options—multiple waves spots, flat water—and places that have a mix of the two. With many great spots such as Dorado Beach around San Juan, others on the south coast and world-class wave spots in the Aguadilla area it really is an island that takes some time to appreciate everything it has to offer. If you are looking for more than just kiting, like surf, or even activities for non-wind traveling companions, Puerto Rico is perfect. From hiking to snorkeling, sailing and horseback riding or seeing historic sites, the list is endless. Puerto Rico is rich in its culture and local cuisine and yet still a quick and convenient flight from most parts of North America.

LOCAL RULES/SAFETY HAZARDS: Inexperienced riders should avoid riding the outer reefs, due to possible large surf and little help. Respect surfers if they are in the water—they always have priority over kites.

LODGING RECOMMENDATIONS AND COSTS: For most of the island, you can take a short step back from the beach and there are many Airbnb or VRBO options for $60-$150/night that can sleep multiple people. Many of these options while reasonably priced and are still very nice and within a short drive or walk to a kite location. You can check out the Villa Montana Beach Resort near Aquadilla airport in Isabella.

If you plan to kite at the Goodwinds Watersports Center at Dorado Beach you will need to stay within the Dorado Beach Resort. You can book a villa for $700-$2,500/ night or stay at either the Ritz Carlton Reserve or the Plantation Residences from $900-$25,000/night. If you aren’t staying at Dorado you will need to book a lesson with Goodwinds to access that kite spot.

It´s better not to move with large amounts of cash and to be careful when you travel with a lot of gear. Don´t take any random taxi in the street or airport; always travel with an arranged plan and a booked hotel/camp/kite center.
