From Our Head of School: DR. ELINOR SCULLY If you had asked me a year ago if I could imagine all that would transpire over the course of last year, I would certainly have been ill-equipped to imagine the last 12 months. There has been terrible loss, much recalibration, and moments of tremendous resilience, strength, and support.

On September 2 of last year, Langley was able to reopen our campus, and seeing children learning in the classroom has filled everyone at Langley with immeasurable joy. We also supported families who chose to learn remotely and equipped our faculty with the tools they needed to deliver content in a new way. While we celebrated resilience, we also stayed true to our mission.

Our auction co-chairs, Heidi Narang and Kristy Rodriguez, were quick to point out the significance of Langley’s REACH (Raising Emotional Acuity, Cultural Competence, and Healthy Behaviors) program and noted how thankful families were that their children were prepared with social

and emotional coping strategies during such a challenging year. This year’s auction pays tribute to this signature program.

Heidi and Kristy, and the entire Auction Committee, have done a phenomenal job to produce an event that will both bring our Langley community together and support our teachers and strategic initiatives through the fundraising accomplished by this event.

Every year, I am humbled by the number of individuals and local businesses who affirm their commitment to our school through endless hours of volunteerism, donations, and sponsorships. Thank you to everyone involved in this year’s event for your support and for your flexibility in this difficult and changing environment.

I look forward to seeing you virtually during our live online program on Saturday, April 17 as we celebrate the Langley community. My deepest wish is for us to carry the past year in our hearts and make of it a future that is worthy of all that has been endured.

This year, more than ever before, we lean on Langley’s core values to foster our children’s emotional intelligence, multicultural responsiveness, and health and wellness in dealing with the constantly evolving challenges of the pandemic and many areas of our lives.

As moms, we understand how complex the world can seem for our kids, and we appreciate having the school as our partner in helping them develop the necessary skills to cope. As the saying goes, “It Takes a Village,” and we thank Langley for the village they help to build. The community we have felt and been able to lean on during the past year has been immeasurable.

We are extremely grateful to be a part of this community and know that none of this would be possible without the support of parents, grandparents, and alumni who continue to give time, talent, and resources. We’d also like to thank a crew of volunteers who worked from behind their computers to help make this auction a special event for our entire community.

All About the Auction A Party with a Purpose:

Funds raised from the spring auction are an essential part of Langley’s operating budget each school year. These funds play a significant role in enabling Langley to enhance and develop our programs, facilities, and faculty/staff in support of the school’s mission. This year’s auction, “REACH for the Stars,” on Saturday, April 17 will feature a silent auction, raffles, and a live auction, including “Raise the Paddle for Faculty Excellence” during an online virtual event. Everyone who registers will receive the link to join this live virtual event. Registration closes at 12:00 p.m. on April 17, 2021. Silent Auction:

The silent auction may be previewed in this catalog or on the auction site (https://langleyschool.ejoinme. org/2021LangleyAuctionHome) from Monday, April 11 through Sunday, April 18. Mobile bidding for the silent auction will open on Monday, April 11 when registered guests who have provided a cell phone number will receive a “welcome” e-mail and text with a personalized URL and may place bids on silent auction items and purchase raffle tickets.

Auction Raffles Each year, the Auction Committee finds generous donors to support the auction through raffles. Raffle tickets can be purchased until 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 17 through online and mobile bidding. To purchase a raffle ticket, open online/mobile bidding and select the number of raffle tickets you would like to purchase for that item. FACULTY/STAFF RAFFLE: Deep Creek Lake Cabin Getaway ($15 per ticket)

"Zmajski Most" Photograph Framed to 28-½” x 21-3/4", “Zmajski Most” or “Dragon Bridge” is a black and white photograph, a remembrance of Ljubljana, Slovenia, since a dragon is the symbol of the city. Ljubljana is a city at the crossroads of history and consequently cultures. Every time one faces in a new direction, there is an image to behold. The Dragon Bridge has its protective demons on either end, ready to scare off any intruders. This fearsome devil had to be captured, or at least trained. The image is printed on Hahnemühle photo rag metallic paper using Epson archival Ultrachrome HD inks. It is then mounted onto a sturdy black gatorboard, sized to allow the image to "breathe." Using a ph-neutral adhesive that also protects the textured surface for a lasting impression, the artwork is lightweight and has a wide viewing angle, not distracted by glass reflections. Since these are one-of-a-kind works, the textured surfaces vary from piece to piece. Also all measurements are approximate as the mounting process may cause paper dimensions to vary. The Nielsen black matte metal frame adds approximately another inch to the art work's length and width. Black is chosen as the backdrop because it requires the human eye to adjust less when viewing a black and white image and makes it stand out more. Hollywood Is Calling! Visitor & Extra on a Movie Set Love movies or into filmmaking? Want to experience the action of Hollywood right here in Virginia? This is your chance to be on the set (with the choice to even be an extra!) for a day with director Dylan Narang, filming “TAPAWINGO.” The story: A listless oddball becomes the unlikely bodyguard for a misfit teenager who has found himself in the crosshairs of the town’s family of bullies.

The movie will be filming in Fairfax and Prince William County from June 7 to July 21. The current signed cast includes Jon Heder (“Napoleon Dynamite”), Billy Zane (“Titanic”), Amanda Bearse, and Blake Clarke.

Bidding Rules General

All purchases are final; no exchanges or refunds on items.

All items are sold “as is.” Unless otherwise specified, all auctioned items and services are valid for one year from the date of the live auction event, April 17, 2022. All services must be redeemed by the listed expiration date.

Dates and times are as designated or are to be arranged between the winner and the donor at their mutual convenience. It will be the winner’s responsibility to check expiration dates and restrictions on his/her items and gift certificates.

Langley is not responsible for certificates/vouchers that are misplaced or lost following receipt. Auction items are not transferable from the buyer to anyone else without the express permission of the donor.

All purchases will be charged to guests’ pre-registered credit cards. Charge transactions will occur the week of April 19, 2021. Should a guest prefer to pay by check, he or she will need to coordinate with the Development Office.

Checks should be made payable to The Langley School.

All physical certificates and auction prizes will be distributed to winners through a drive-up pick-up on May 1, 2021. Details for pick-up will be communicated directly to winners the week following the auction.

Auction purchases are tax-deductible only to the extent that the amount paid for an item exceeds the fair market value of the item. The fair market value of auction items is provided based on donors’ stated value only. All values are estimates only and are not guaranteed by the school.

If any auction item is purchased below the market value, you are not able to claim a deduction.

The Internal Revenue Service requires that the school provide a good-faith estimate of the fair market value of each item purchased in excess of $75. The school will provide you with a receipt listing the items you purchased and a good-faith estimate of the value of each.

By his or her purchase, the buyer waives any claims for liability against either The Langley School or the donor of the property or services. Neither the school nor the donor is responsible for any personal injuries or damage to property that may result from the use of property or services sold.

Raffle tickets are not tax-deductible.

Live Auction

The live auction will take place virtually on April 17, 2021.

Anyone who is registered may bid and the card you have on file will be charged. To bid on live auction items, you must enter your bid in the chat, so you must be present online to bid and win the live auction items. The auctioneer will begin the bidding and participants will enter that amount or a higher amount in the chat. The auctioneer will take the highest bid on the item and announce the winner.

Silent Auction

The Greater Giving mobile/online bidding platform will be used for the silent auction. Guests will bid using their smartphones or desktop computers. Bidding will open to all registered persons on Monday, April 12 and will close on Sunday, April 18 at 8:00 p.m.

Please be advised that each item has a specified minimum bid and minimum incremental bid. Bidders will be alerted prior to the closing of the silent auction. The person offering the highest bid for an item at the close of bidding will be deemed the winner of the item. Bidders can view items they have won on their smartphones or computers.

Bidding Instructions

• Select the silent auction item on which you wish to

bid. You can bid the next increment or bid more than the next increment. If you choose to bid more, you can choose to set your max bid. If your max bid is the highest, the system will automatically bid in your favor until you are outbid or until the silent auction closes. If your bid is lower than the highest max bid on that package, you will be prompted to enter a higher bid.

• If you are outbid at any point before the silent auction closes, you’ll be notified by text message.

• To “watch” a package, select the star icon on the package.

• To view packages you are bidding on, click the menu button and select “bids.”

• To view packages you are watching, click the menu button and select “favorites.”

• Once the auction closes, the guest with the highest bid will win.

• Under the “bids” area, you can check your winning packages.

• Please note that auction items will be awarded to one purchaser only. Winning bids will not be split among participants who may have agreed to pay a portion of the winning bid amount.
