SEWN TOGETHER By Lauren Speirs
Reuniting for the costume design of Boeing Boeing, two volunteers reflect on their shared experiences through the years with TNP. In 2008, Mary’s daughter was in A Christmas Carol with The Naples Players. “I wasn’t going to drive back and forth from The Estates every night so I said - ‘put me to work!’ I volunteered and then eventually became a staff member. For three years, I was the Shop Supervisor before I moved to DC because of my kids and grandchildren. This was the hardest place we’ve ever moved from!” Since moving, Mary has costumed two performances at the Little Theatre of Alexandria. “It’s so nice to be back (at The Naples Players) for Boeing Boeing. This is such a special place to be.”
girls were very involved. I would do costumes for their shows. My youngest, Brigid, was involved with TNP and was nurtured, really disciplined in a good way, and really encouraged. Brigid is still involved in theatre and still on stage.” Jack was the first male to volunteer in the costume shop. Mary jokes, “We were a bit skeptical at first!” When asked how many shows they’ve worked on together they laughed.
“We worked six years together. Not including KidzAct performances, that’s nine productions a year...a total of 54 productions!”
Jack Cole had recently retired when he moved to Naples nine years ago. “We moved in June and by mid-August my wife was tired of me being at home!” he jokes. “She said - ‘Look at the theater, you could probably help them with costumes.’ I did costumes for my sons’ plays in schools and always did their Halloween costumes.” Jack laughs as he recounts, “Our neighbor down the street used to say - ‘I hate you because you’ve got the best costumes on the block!’”
Reflecting on the camaraderie they experienced during some of their more challenging productions, Mary says, “the team was incredible during My Fair Lady and The Music Man. We stayed late and came in early. My Fair Lady was particularly intense but very rewarding.” Jack added that, “one actress who played Mrs. Higgins said ‘you made me feel beautiful!’”
As far as experience goes, Mary says, “I’ve been sewing since I was a kid and always loved theater. I have a degree in Theater Arts and my

plate creatively. We had a hat workshop and we said to them ‘here’s the picture and just go create!’ To see the collaboration was magical. We were all so proud.” When working with TNP’s team of volunteers, Mary says, “I love seeing someone be able to create something that belongs to them. As a designer we have final oversight, but for a massive show it’s really more of a ‘you feed me, and I feed you’ dynamic.” Mary explains that, “To think of every single detail yourself would be much less rewarding. It’s great to have a broad brush and let someone create within that.” As far as preparing for each production goes, Jack and Mary explain that they read the script - a lot. “I want to know about the themes, who are these people? Is there anything special that I need to know about? What texture and colors are present in the story? That will help me to
inform what I put on them. Then there’s tons of research and gathering pictures and then just letting it sink in. I usually wind up reading the script five or six times.” There are details that really stand out to an audience that they keep in mind when creating. For example, Mary says, “color is a very evocative emotion. The audience makes an immediate judgment of who they are when they see the color of the costumes. Sometimes we also try to trick them (the audience)!” As with all things theatre, there are always last minute changes. Jack says, “Sometimes you get them on stage and realize it just doesn’t work.” For example, Mary reflected on a last minute conundrum during The Music Man. “We made this beautiful gown but it just washed out to grey on stage - we couldn’t leave that. It was a pivotal

SEWN TOGETHER Continued From Page 11 moment where she’s supposed to be incredibly beautiful and the gown was just - blah! I just made a completely new gown. I got close to what I had in mind and she (the actress) looked gorgeous.” Both Jack and Mary applaud Dot Auchmoody, TNP’s Resident Costume Designer, for her amazing organizational skills and management. Jack says, “The way she’s organized how you set things out for volunteers is amazing - the actors know where things are and so do the costume shop volunteers. It helps her and Mollie (LaTorre, Costume Shop Supervisor) that they don’t have to stand over everyone every minute.” Jack and Mary have about ten people working on Boeing Boeing. “Some are regulars and here almost every day and some are here once a week. We so appreciate the way Dot and Mollie have organized it so that we find where everyone’s strengths are. Even just ironing or laundry everyone has a place and they are needed. A costume might need a few different alterations and one person can do the hemming and another can do a more difficult alteration such as replacing a sleeve.” Mary goes on to say that,
“Everyone recognizes that each person has something important to give and I think that’s a successful volunteer organization.” TOP: Mary Wallace with Elizabeth Marcantonio at the premiere of My Fair Lady. MIDDLE: Jack Cole concentrates on a costume detail for an upcoming show. BOTTOM: Dot Auchmoody, Mary Wallace and Mollie LaTorre pause for a quick photo in the Costume Shop.

Playwright Marc Camoletti was a French citizen born in Geneva, Switzerland in 1923. Both of his parents were Italian and Marc initially trained as an architect before discovering his love for writing. Author of more than 40 plays, Camoletti auspiciously launched his theatre career with three plays running simultaneously in Paris! Boeing Boeing became his first international success, opening in London in 1962. It ran for seven years and became the Guinness Book of Records’ most performed French play worldwide. His equally successful Don’t Dress For Dinner also ran for seven years in London. Like all 40 of Camoletti’s plays, Boeing Boeing is a light comedy focused on sex, relationships, and secrets. His work is often described as “boulevard theatre,” a genre of sex comedies named for Paris’ Boulevard du Temple, location of many of the city’s theaters.

Camoletti’s plays have been translated and performed in 55 countries and ten of them have been produced for television. In Paris alone, 18 of his plays have been staged more than 20,000 times! In 1965, Paramount released Boeing Boeing the film starring Jerry Lewis, Tony Curtis, and Thelma Ritter. Camoletti was an associate of the Société Nationale des Beaux Arts and was named Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur, one of France’s highest honors. Camoletti died in 2003. He is buried in the Montmartre Cemetery in Paris with his wife, theatrical designer Germaine Camoletti, who passed away in 1994.

Every stewardess in the 1960s was considered very glamorous. One stewardess of that era recalled,
“we were almost on the same level as movie stars.”
THEIR TRAINING INCLUDED: • Proper posture • Correct ways to stand, walk, and carry a purse • Uniforms - ALL custom fitted • Coats - ALWAYS buttoned • Gloves - worn at all times
Typically, their six weeks of training left nothing to the imagination... • Stewardesses were told how to style their hair and how to wear makeup. • Some airlines had regulation shades of nail polish and lipstick. • A stewardess could be suspended for smoking in uniform, forgetting her hat, or tanning too much .

THE
PLOT
Thickens! Bernard, an American architect living in Paris in the early 1960s, is engaged to Gloria (American/TWA)...and to Gabriella (Italian/Alitalia)...and to Gretchen (German/Lufthansa)! All three are flight attendants and, as you might expect, none of the ladies know about each other. This is exactly the way Bernard has designed it. Successfully juggling the ladies depends on predictable and regular international flight timetables. The introduction of the Super Boeing jet, which travels at faster speeds, causes the old timetables to no longer be reliable. Bernard’s life becomes complicated. Add in Robert, a naïve friend from Wisconsin; Berthe, a sassy French housekeeper; and doors that open and slam with mathematical precision ... and farce follows! It’s important to note that Berthe is key to the success of the ruse as she manages three sets of clothing, photographs, bed linens, and food preferences. The plan works as long as their flight schedules only bring them ‘home’ every three days.
26
TNP BACKSTAGE
BOEING BOEING
Things begin to unravel when there is a change in all the women’s flight orders, making it increasingly hard to keep them apart, and eventually bringing all three of them home on the very same day. Bernard, aided by the bewildered Robert, struggles to keep them separate and unaware of the truth. Can Robert maintain the charade, or will a disaster occur? Inevitably, all’s well that ends well, but they – and we – have a rollicking good time getting there!

COAST TO COAST By Lauren Speirs
Following one volunteer’s journey across the US In Massachusetts, Pamela Austin was a student of voice in high school and was expected to audition for every performance the school had to offer - including musicals and plays. “I was a senior and the next audition was for Fiddler on The Roof. I was not interested but I had to audition.” Pam found out she landed the role of Yente, the village’s matchmaker and busybody. “Another classmate wanted the role and burst into tears and I said - great, give it to her! Of course the director pointed out that I wasn’t allowed to recast the show.” Luckily for Pam, her friends, family, and director told her she should take the fun opportunity and just do it! From there, her director suggested that she major in theatre in college, which Pam was excited to pursue. Her college professor also encouraged her to continue her acting pursuits after graduation so she went to the Neighborhood Playhouse in NYC. Eventually, she decided she wanted to pursue a career in television and film. Originally from Andover, Massachusetts, Pam decided to move to Boston and worked on TV shows and two national commercials - one of which appeared in the Super Bowl! In 1991, she was due to arrive in Los Angeles but was in a horrific accident. “It took me about a year to get my full strength back to walk.”

Once rehabilitated, she finally set off to L.A. where she landed in a lot of movies as an extra. Pam says, “The highlight was eating pizza with Timothy Hutton on the backlot of Paramount Studios!” While achieving all of her acting dreams, a 6.7 magnitude earthquake hit Northridge, Los Angeles and made her change paths. Between Pam’s accident and the earthquake she experienced, the idea to change course quickly set in. “I thought to myself ‘maybe I’m not meant to be doing this.’” “I had a normal life after that - I got married, got a house, and a ‘real’ job.” Skipping ahead to 2017, Pam decided to make the move to Naples. “My two brothers were living in Naples at the time and I thought - why not?! I was walking on 5th Avenue and noticed the theatre (The Naples Players). When I walked in, I asked someone ‘is this a professional theatre?’ and they said ‘no it’s a community theatre!’” Pam wasted no time getting involved. “I got a tour of the theatre and started volunteering. I finally auditioned and my first role was Monette in Always a Bridesmaid and afterwards I was in Silent Sky.” Both productions were in the Tobye Studio Theatre so Boeing Boeing will mark Pam’s first time on the grand stage of Blackburn Hall.

PAMEL A AUSTIN
“It was awesome to come back to live theater. I was so happy I could still memorize lines! I had a good gap there from the last time I did live performances so I’m very happy to be back.” Even for someone with so much professional experience, Pamela loves the environment at The Naples Players.
“Everyone is so supportive and encouraging. You want to participate and you want to help out - it’s that type of feeling. It’s nice to have a base community of friends here and all of those people in it.” “From longtime professionals to first time performers, The Naples Players is a theatre for everyone,” says Bryce Alexander, CEO & Executive Artistic Director.

(Comedic Liaison) Encouraged by producer Norman Lear, Jerry began a 3 0 - y e a r Ho l l y w o o d career as a writer-producer on Welcome Back, Kotter; Happy Days; All in the Family; Room 222; The Love Boat; Love, American Style; Head of the Class; and Eight Is Enough; a total of over 200 produced teleplays. He has won exclusive development contracts with the ABC Network, Columbia Pictures, Paramount Studios and 20th Century Fox. Jerry is the author of four comedy novels and his book, Writing Television Comedy, was an educational bestseller. He has taught humor writing at the University of Wisconsin, Carthage College, DePaul University and the USC Film School. Jerry is a lifetime member of the Writers Guild of America, and he loves working with the talented people at The Naples Players.
TODD POTTER ................ (Scenic Designer) Proper attire for Bird Watching? It’s on you, my bird-curious friend, to change the tide. You don’t need to wear zipoff pants: you can just wear pants or shorts. You don’t need to wear a bucket hat with gills and special mosquito repellent fibers: you can just wear a hat. You don’t need to wear a vest with a million pockets: you can just wear, like, literally anything. I’m just saying that it’s okay not to buy into not-so-subliminal messages from the gear industry that tell you that you need to buy certain things to be a better birder. If it’s going to be hot out, wear shorts and bring lots of water and sunscreen. If you’re going to get muddy, wear boots. It really doesn’t need to get any more simple than that. This design is for Cairo the “Pupperooni”—I miss you every day, little girl.
